.'ROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Saturday afternoon, October 23rd this editor and family started out for Houston to attend the Czech Day at Lodge No. 88, Houston, Sunday, October 24th. It was raining when we left West Saturday and rained nearly all the way to Houston. We arrived at my sister Lydia Hendrick's home about 8 p.m., where we were to spend the night. After a few words of greeting, she departed for work and yours truly left to visit friends at the Lodge 88 dance. Upon our arrival Brothers Richard Wahlberg and Tommie Caraway informed me of the sad fact that Brother Oscar Helmcamp had died that evening and naturally, that diminished the spirits for the next day. Brother Helmcamp was a. true fraternalist, very friendly and a friend of everyone. He, of course, was the husband of Sister Tillie Helmcamp, a past president of Lodge 88 (19711972) and father of Jeanette Eubank, now 1st vice president of Lodge 88. It was indeed a shock to all of us and naturally, prevented Sisters Tillie Helmcamp and Jeanette Eubank from taking part in the program. Sincere sympathy from all was expressed to the entire family and relatives the next day. Brother Oscar will be remembered by all for many years to come. May he rest in peace. Sunday morning it was up to get ready for the annual Lodge No. 88 Czech Day. We arrived for a

When we arose in the morning it began raining and actually rained all day, however, that did not seem to dampen the spirits of the crowd which was arriving steadily from noon and into the afternoon. The program was somewhat delayed due to the bus from Temple being delayed for some reason, however, Lodge 88 President Brother Louis Hanus managed to shift the program lineup about to keep the audience entertained and attentive by doing so. He is to be congratulated for his effort with much work on his part and the entire program staff certainly did
their share. What was so amazing was the fact that so many people from so many places took time out to attend in such bad weather. The entire premises were filled to capacity and the ballroom, where the main part of the program was performed- was filled to overflowing. It certainly was a wonderful day for everyone and enjoyable to all, young and old alike. The program lineup was good and it was so nice to see so many of our youth represented, especially those in costume; they were strikingly pretty and handsome. Certainly, Carla Adams, queen of District V and Mark Wahlberg, king of District V were recognized for their wonderful contribution to the day as was our XXIInd Convention Miss SPJST, Mary Cavanaugh. One of the very interesting parts of the program was the film presentation of The Czech Texans, so ably presented by Mr. Phil Hewitt from the Institute of Texas Culture. It was certainly well received and held the audience in real down-to-earth quiet attention. It would seem that the entire day turned out to be a success, especially in view of the adverse weather prevailing. The Czech chorus numbers were well received. The talent manifest by the tro groups appearing was really something to be enjoyed; however, some people felt that the presentations were a bit prolonged. It was about time to leave when
