FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Once again this year a day Sunday, October 24th — will be proclaimed CZECH DAY IN HOUSTON to observe the declaration of independence of the Czechoslovak Republic, which occurred October 28, 1918. This is not merely a proclamation and Lodge 88 will provide another full day of food, fun, and frolic intended especially for you. The day will begin at 11:30 with a tasty turkey and dressing dinner with all the trimmings to be served until ??? Beginning at noon a polka band will begin playing at Lodge 88's new gazebo and then at 3 p.m. another band will begin playing western music for the younger generation and the ones who are young at heart until 5 p.m. Who could ask for more? Lodge 88's Concert Orchestra also promises to perform at 1:15 in the Chandelier Ballroom and at 2 p.m. their entertaining program will convene. You cannot help but enjoy the program and the entire day. This editor plans to be there and meet many of our fraternalists who also plan to attend. For further details and particulars concerning the day's program, we suggest you refer to page 27 in this issue and the full page ad. While we are thinking about Sunday, October 24, it is well to mention that Lodge No. 88, Houston President Louis Harms 'had asked

government of the people, .by. .thethatpeople, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. —Lincoln * * On the whole, with scandalous exceptions, Democracy has given the ordinary worker more dignity than he ever had. —Sinclair Lewis * * Not only our future economic soundness but the very soundness of our democratic institutions depends on the determination of our government to give employment to idle men. —Franklin D. Roosevelt (1938) * The world must be made safe for -democracy. —Woodrow Wilson (1917) us about three months ago to attend the Czech Day there and we agreed since there were no district meetings scheduled for that day. However, now, the Texas Fraternal Congress is meeting on October 23, 24, and ends early Monday, October 25th, in San Antonio. Needless to say, we would have liked to attend, leaving Saturday after our work is done and attending Sunday and Monday morning. Here is a case where a person has to search their fraternal conscience and ask himself if a short stay plus the fcr mileage to and from the

'1'14V is of any great benefit to our Society to compensate for cost of same and, therefore, we will forego the effort and attend the Czech Day in Houston only. Our SPJST Society will be represented by a number of our SPJST SL members and sales representatives and we hope they gain benefits from the trip, both for themselves and our SPJST. I, as your editor, was supposed to attend the National Fraternal Congress in Chicago, Ill., some years back and again in Hollywood, Fla., recently, and did not for these reasons: first, in editorial work, you do not just leave and go and, secondly, after studying the agenda g,nd amount of time spent on subjects pertinent to my type of.work it just did not seem to justify the expense of airplane fare and the cost of lodging, etc., to our Society. We have enough of that as it is. Some members are wondering and have been for some time, about the advisability of some of these expenses. Some time ago a member came to me and mentioned this very thing and said that it reminds him of some 19 U.S. Senators and Representatives going on a joint trip to Asia and questioned whether that many were needed at the taxpayers expense. He added that our membership pays for this. I told him that Congress has a committee to investigate this type of thing
