With this issue, we are completing the publication of the proceedings of our =Ind Convention. It is hoped that all of our membership and especially the delegates, have read and followed them carefully — remember this is your Society, so take interest in its affairs.

Before long we should also be receiving the by-laws to be printed and, when they are being published, you are also advised to read them carefully and make notes of the ones you think should be changed in our 1980 convention, so that all is not left to be done in the last few weeks and days prior to the convention as so often happens.

• • Sunday, October 3rd we attended the District V meeting at Lodge Stefanik No. 142, Houston, hosted

by Lodge No. 176, Houston Northwest, since that lodge does not have a home of its own yet. However, they are a very enthusiastic group of members and it would not be surprising to see them have one before too much time passes. With energetic leaders like Brothers Harry Schuhmann and Gene Fischer, etc., the lodge promises to be a growing one, especially so, since they are located in an area of metropolitan Houston where many fraternally-inclined families live.

Theirs is a very prosperous and fertile area for their sales representatives to work in. Yours truly knows that section of Houston well from the time it was still open country, so go to work! There are many, many of our type of fraternalists living there.

This was a big undertaking for Lodge 176 and they handled it well.

The food was good and well prepared; we enjoyed it and brought 2 pounds of barbecued briskit home with us, The one fact that Brother H. Schuhmann was impressed with was the fraternal attitude that Lodge No. 142 members displayed to the membership of Lodge No. 176

Wednesda October 13, 1976 by allowing their entire premises to be used by Lodge No. 176. He stated: "Now this is what you call fraternalism." He requested that a picture of the banners of the two lodges (Nos. 142 and 176) be taken as they were displayed in back of the podium. We hope to have the picture next issue if it arrives in time and is good enough to process.

We enjoyed the meeting and compliment District V President Jerry Prochazka on the efficient way he conducted the entire meeting. It is a pleasure to see any meeting being handled with restraint.

A look at the SPJST Bulletin Board a couple of weeks ago brought the thought to our mind that, at least, for 1976 our Saturday and Sunday journeying would end in the second week of November, however, we see that, in this issue, two more Sundays in November are taken up by chartering ceremonies of lodges — Lodge No. 180, Burleson, November 21st, and Lodge No. 185, New Braunfels. See the Bulletin Board and Calendar for details as they are formulated.

A friend came by the office the other day and suggested: "Why don't you get a small airplane or helicopter? You wouldn't have to spend as must time on highway trips." It is a thought, isn't it? It would be faster, however, it's like a cowboy once told his pilot: "I don't care how high we fly as long as one of my boot heels touches the ground." * * Remember the District VII meeting Sunday, October 17th, at Corpus Christi. (See the Bulletin Board for details.)

• * Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88 is planning a nice day for you Sunday, October 24th. This will be their annual Czech Day in observance of the 58th anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic in October, 1918. You will enjoy the day of meeting friends and seeing their nice program.

Plan to attend if at all possible. * The pictures of the YAD Royalty appear in this issue with a thorough report of same by SYD • Dorothy Massey. There were 6 youth letters and 4 Expressions of Sympathy that had to be held back for next week.

Frank Prikryl, 61, of Lancaster, died Sept. 24th. Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 25th at the Laurel Land Chapel, with Rev. Larry Hill officiating. Interment was in Laurel Land Memorial Park.

Brother Prikryl was a member of Lodge 84, Dallas. * • Rosie Zapalka Sedlacek, 77, died at 3:20 p.m. Oct. 6th at Azelia Manor Nursing Home in Sealy. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 8, with Rev. Henry Beseda, Rev. Josef Barton and Rev. Lawrence Junek officiating. Burial was in Sealy Cemetery. Sister Sedlacek was a 50-year SPJST member (Lodge 141, Sealy, formerly Mixville). She was the mother of Sister Lillian Kruse of Houston and the grandmother of Captain Larry Kruse of Castle Air Force Base of Merced, Calif.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE larInd CONVENTION HELD IN WACO, TEXAS, JUNE 14-17, 1976 APPENDIX SUPPLEMENTAL REPORT OF SUPREME. LODGE PRESIDENT Subject: Progress Report on Licensing Bill Dear Delegates: You will recall that I appeared before the full parent insurance committee of the Texas House of Representatives on April 29th, 1975.

At that time I gave a rather lengthy presentation in an attempt to give a complete background on what fraternal benefit societies are all about and how we operate in Texas. At that time my testimony was aimed at proposed legislation Which would have required agents of fraternal benefit societies to become licensed as a result of licensing examinations. As a result of the hearings and testimony at that time, a sub-committee of five mem-

bers of the parent committee was set up to hear testimony on agents' licensing in various cities in Texas.

The last of those hearings was held in Austin on Wednesday, May 19th, 1976.

I attended that session, and gave a briefer presentation than I had a year ago, but covered the high points of may previous testimony.

The hearing again centered around licensing by examination of all individuals soliciting or selling insurance in Texas. The proposal was to delete the present exemptions from licensing of fraternal life insurance agents and provide for the issuance of a license with no testing or examination of applicants by the State Board of Insurance.

The position that I and the other heads of fraternal benefit societies operating in Texas took was that licensing without an examination would not be detrimental to our operations as such, but that with the passage of time, who could say that in two, four, six, or eight years, with changes in the makeup of the legislature, someone would not propose, that since we are already licensed, we should at some point also be required to pass licensing examinations . That, of ,course, would take us back to our original position that we are opposed to licensing with examinations because we have held all along that a large majority of our sales representatives would not be interested in taking or submitting to an examination. That would hurt us.

The overriding question, asked me and the other representatives of fraternal benefit societies at the hearing, was: "If other life insurance companies are required to obtain a license after examination, why should you people (fraternal benefit societies) be excluded from such a provision?" Our answers were to the effect that we police our own people, train our own people, and take positive and direct action against any violators or representatives who may at any time misrepresent our product. We submitted the fact that we have had very few, if any, persons who have complained about misrepresentation on the part of fraternal benefit agents, that the mistakes being made, and I am sure there are some, are misrepresentations by people who have passed examination and been licensed from com-

4 mercial companies, and that the public's interest is not jeopardized by agents of FBS. Still — it remains a thorny issue.

(It was evident that some of the members of the sub-committee were not familiar with what a fraternal benefit society is or how we operate and admitted it, although the other members, especially members of the parent committee are very sympathetic to our position on this matter.)

At any rate, the chairman of the Sub-committee agreed to sit down with several of us representing fraternal benefit societies after the formal hearings were over and we felt a little freer to make our remarks, uninhibited by a court reporter, except for a taping of our conversation to be used in possible drafting of legislation by legislative counsel. We tried our very best to make the point that fraternal benefit societies are different and operate differently from commercial underwriters and that we are still opposed to licensing, even without an examination, because of what it will eventually lead to; that once a statute gets its "foot in the door", what would be behind the next door, and the eventual result would require licensing with the attendant requirements (examination).

The chairman was very nice and cooperative, heard us out thoroughly and patiently° and said that the sub-committee would make its report back to the parent committee on June the 15th and would advise what that recommendation was going to be. At that point, the whole committee would hold closed hearings on HB 1765, and that no public testimony would be taken, because that has been the object and purpose behind the hearings that have now taken place over a period of a year.

(Perhaps we will hear before this convention is out what that recommendation to the parent Insurance Committee of the House will be.

After their recommendation is made, the full committee then votes on drafted legislation, which will, in turn, be presented to the full House in January, 1977. I fully believe, and I am sure the other leaders of the other fraternal benefit societies in Texas believe, that we have tried to make our point as best we could, and that no purpose

would be served in any further lobbying with members of the committee at this time. Obviously, the next step and hurdle, if the full committee recommends it, is the full session of the House in January, 1977. We have done the best we could; now it is up to the' committee on insurance and the House itself, and if the bill passes in any form in the House, then it must go to the Senate and pass there in order to become law).

Another New Lodge Organized.

Since my pre-convention report, we are happy to announce that another new lodge has been organi7 ed in the New Braunfels area, namely, Lodge Hill Country No. 185.

It was organized on 14 May 1976, and the lodge is represented by a delegate to this convention, Brother Joe Slavik.

Convention District Caucuses.

During the last few weeks, inquiries have come to my office regarding the question of who presides over the district caucuses in this convention. Certain articles 12(i) and 53(e) duly outline the provisions for district caucuses during a convention, but do not state who presides over these district caucuses.

The previous by-law (from 1968) specified that "The temporary chairman who convenes this meeting will be the highest ranking district officer present. If there are no district officers present the district director will serve as temporary chairman . . ." It would be my thinking and opinion that in the absence of any clear-cut and set procedure under present by-laws, it would be in order for the district director to temporarily convene the district caucuses and let the delegates from that district elect their permanent chairman. Wording to this effect should be worked into the new by-laws by the ByLaw Committee.

Fraternally, Nick A. Morris President, SL, SPJST * 4 INSURANCE COMMITTEE) REPORT A. The Insurance Committee made the following recommendations to be presented to the ByLaw Committee.

1. Articles 52 and 56 were reviewed. It was recommended that these two articles be amended. To include "an examination by phy-

sical measurement centers" since it is so hard to get our applicants to go to a doctor for a medical examination due to the long period of time it takes. It is also to be changed in the sales representatives rate book. The fee for one complete examination and report shall be established by the Supreme Lodge. The Society will not be responsible for any expenses that may be incurred in the examination beyond those authorized by the Supreme Lodge.

2. Article 80 of our by-laws be taken out and that Supreme Lodge and actuary decide how much insurance to retain.

3. Article 13-D be deleted.

4. Article 53(e) — remain.

5. Article 61 the word "absen be replaced by in lieu.

5. (a) Article 61 policy may be signed by any two duly elected officers.

B. The Insurance Committee made the following recommendations to be presented to the officers and directors of the Supreme Lodge SPJST. 1. Recommendation that the Supreme Lodge SPJST form a threemember co-Supreme Lodge Ins. Comm., composed of the head of the insurance division and two directors, endowed with the authority to make suggestions, recommendations and implementations on insurance plans and sales between convention.

2. It is recommended that the head of the insurance department, Supreme Lodge SPJST, prepare and publish in the Vestnik at intervals topics related to SPJST insurance, orientated to the interests of insurance representatives and members alike.

3. The Insurance Committee requests that a study be made of the feasibility for local and district sales representatives to purchase group hospitalization insurance through the established plan currently held for Supreme Lodge employees or a similar plan which could be administered through the auspices of the Supreme Lodge.

4. It is recommended that small increase be made in premium rates for life and endowment policies of $1,000 and reduction in premium rates for policies of $2,000, $5,000 and additional increasement of $5,000. Authorize the Supreme Lodge and our actuary to adjust

5. Recommendation that the use of the term mortgage cancellation be discontinued and in its place utilize decreasing term.

6. Recommendation that premium rates for the level term and decreasing term of $2,500 and $5,000 respectively be increased and premiums for these certificates issued in the amount of $10,000, $25,000, and $50,000 be decreased. ' 7. Recommend that additional information relative to the Family Plan be added to the rate book sheet. The additional information should state that for the father a minimum certificate of $2,500 in class Pr., W or K insurance, and for the mother and children a minimum certificate of $1,000 each.

C. The Insurance Committee made the following recommendations to be presented to the delegates of our next convention.

1. A recommendation was made that the actuary prepare premiums to extend the issue age on class EX and class PR to age 65. (Increase issue age to 60 on. our EX plan and to age 65 on our PR plan.)

2. It was suggested that our actuary and SL Vice President review the possibility of adding an insurability supplement to our life policies to guarantee the member that he or she can increase the amount of insurance up to age 40 without having to prove insurability. (To provide an insurability rider with options to purchase additional insurance without insurability at specified ages, such as 25, 28, 31, 34, 37, and 40. Details to be worked out by our actuary.

3. The recommendation was made by our actuary that D.I. coverage continue past the normal expiration age of 65 to age 70 at onehalf of the regular benefit for the same premium of $1.25 per $1,000.

4. It was recommended that the Insurance Committee meet twice, between convention, one year nrior to the convention and again a second time three months prior to the convention to act on all suggestions and recommendations to the convention.

5. A recommendation was made that we study the new IRA plan with the annuity contract.

6. Recommendations for nonmedical applications:

Comm. * * INSURANCE COMMITTEE SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT Insurance Committee met on June 15, 1976 at 7:30 a.m. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Brother Ben Jarma. All members of the Insurance Committee were present. Also our actuary, David Huff, was present.

1. The Insurance Committee recommends to the Supreme Lodge Insurance Department that insurance premiums and commissions be reviewed to determine if the SPJST policy is consistant with other fraternal organizations.

The Insurance Committee recommends that the original and the supplementary reports both be adopted as presented.

Per Bro. Joe B. Hejny, that provided this meets with the approval of the State Board and the law, all recommendations will be followed and accepted.

Dickson Raymond Pavliska Maxine Pavliska Willie Dusek * * RESOLUTION Be it resolved by the delegates to the XXIInd Convention of the Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas): WHEREAS, the State of Texas granted to the Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas), organized in LaGrange, Fayette County, Texas, a charter on August 12, 1897, as a fraternal benefit society under the laws of the State of Texas for a period of fifty (50) years, beginning August 12, 1897, until August 12, 1947.

WHEREAS, the convention held by all of the delegates of all of the lodges of the Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas) held in Corpus Christi, Texas, June 29, 1944, passed a resolution requesting the officers of the Supreme Lodge to file an application with the Honorable Board of

Insurance Commissioners of Texas for an extension of a charter for an additional period of time of fifty (50) years beginning with August 12, 1947 and the President and Secretary of the Supreme Lodge filed an appropriate application with the Honorable Board of Insurance Commissioners of Texas together with a copy of the resolution adopted by the convention on June 29, 1944, in compliance with Article 1315-c of the 1925 Revised Civil Statutes of the State of Texas requesting that the charter of the corporation be extended as a fraternal benefit association in the State of Texas for fifty (50) years, whereby the charter was extended, as applied for, by the Board of Insurance Commissioners, on the 27th day of June, 1947.

WHEREAS, the delegates to the 22nd Convention of the Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas) desire to change its name to Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST), and to extend its charter perpetually.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: Section 1: That the name of Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Tetras) be changed to: Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST).

Section 2.: That the charter at Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas) be extended perpetually.

Section 3: That the President and Secretary be, and they are hereby authorized and directed to execute all instruments necessary for filing and approval by the State Board of Insurance, of such change of name and extend charter, and they are hereby authorized and directed to pay out of the funds of this association the necessary expenses therewith.

Elaine Berkovsky Helen Oates Pauline Shiller Catherine Walker • * PUBLICITY COMMITTEE Concluding its XXIInd Quadrennial Convention on Thursday, approximately 330 delegates from throughout the state left the Waco Convention Center with by-law and constitution changes completed. In addition, delegates also elected the following Supreme Lodge officers for the coming four years: President — Nick A. Morris Vice President — Joe B. Hejny Secretary-Treasurer — Leonard D. Mikeska Financial Secretary — Jerry J. Mikulas, Jr. Legal Advisor — Reuben B. Lesikar Editor — Rudy J. Sefcik The SPJST is a fraternal benefit society founded in 1897, in La Grange, Texas, by 21 Czech-Texas pioneers and offers fraternal life insurance to its members. The Society consists of 129 lodges located throughout Texas with a combined membership exceeding 55,000. The Home Office Is located in Temple, Texas. The Society also conducts a vigorous youth program for its younger people on the lodge, 1:Used, and state levels; in addition to its many charitable and fraternal endeavors.

Another highlight of the convention came Wednesday night with the crowning of Mary Cavanaugh of Granger as the Miss SPJST of the XXIInd Convention. Named first runner-up was Connie Hrncir of Corpus Christi, with Becky Smith of Houston as second runner-up. Mils SPJST contestants compete on a talent, poise, and speech presentation basis.

In addition to business sessions, delegates attended various evening

functions featuring social events and talent presentations. A special musical presentation paying tribute to our Nation's Bicentennial was presented Wednesday evening.

Delegates also selected San Antonio as the site of the next convention to be held in four years.

Fraternally, Ila Mae Jansky Reporter - SPJST DISTRICT V MEETING Dear Members: The meeting was held at Lodge No. 142 Stefanik in Houston and was hosted by Lodge No. 176, Houston Northwest. President Jerry Prochazka convened the meeting at 1:30 p.m. Flag Bearers Arthur Fahling and Mark Wahlberg presented colors and led us in the pledge of allegiance. Brother Gene Fischer of Lodge 176 gave a warm welcome.

Brother Prochazka thanked Lodge 176 for hosting the meeting and Lodge 142 for lending their facilities.

The president turned the meeting over to DYC Richard Wahlberg for the youth program. He presented Kina Mark Wahlberg and Queen Carla Adams and Duchess Debra Dobesh and announced that Bo Goings won first prize in the state with his cake and Gary Schuhmann won first place in talent. Gary performed and all enoyed his tap dance.

Second Wee President Harry Schuhmann presented: President Nick A. Morris, Editor Rudy Sefeik and son Terry and Mr. W. E. Souchek and wife Alice.

Secretary Tillie Helracamp did the roll call of lodges, and lodges were represented, 65, 81, 88, 142, 172, and 176. The minutes were approved as read. Brother Prochazka announced that Mrs. Lostak, mother of Treasurer Tommy Lostak and a sister of Rest Homes Director J. M. Skrabanek, passed away and the funeral was that afternoon. He reported for the treasurer: $714.04 in the general fund and $1,398.53 in the youth fund. Birdie Hilsher stated that District V Director Alfred Hilsher was in the hospital but was better and sent his greetings to us and also best wishes for a successful meeting.

Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska asked all the sales representatives to stand and about a third of them were present. New sales representatives are Brothers Charlie Matcek and Herbert Nowotny of Lodge 81 and John Cervenka of Lodge 170 and Sisters Patsy Daughtrey of Lodge 176, Gloria Janke of Lodge 175 and Geraldine Kucera of Lodge 162. The winners of the trip to Texas Fraternal Congress are Helen Hegwood, Della Kadlecek, and Agnes Lesak and the winner of a watch was Pearl Hanka. The 1976 quota is $3,200,000 and so far $3,137,000 has been sold. Evelyn held five classes in the district; she attended the District Sales Representatives meeting in Temple.

President Nick A. Morris brought greetings from the other officers of the Supreme Lodge. He thanked Lodges Nos. 176 and 142 and stated that the by-laws are at the printers and the convention proceedings will be ready within a week or so.

He gives the convention a good rating for much was accomplished and all committees gave careful consideration. Brother Morris stated that one thing was omitted and

Wednesday, October 13, 1976 that is an allocation or remuneration to Czech teachers in junior and community colleges. He thought a big accomplishment was the setting up of a finance committee to study the allocations of money before the convention.

Brother Morris thanked Lodge No. Choral Group and Concert Orchestra for coming to help a small lodge get started at Warrenton. He stated that Gary Schuhmann and Debra Dobesh will perform at the Texas Fraternal Congress. He extended greetings to Brother Hilsher and congratulated him on being elected director and Brother Louis Hanus on being elected assistant director.

Brother Morris reported that the committee on licensing of fraternal benefit societies recommended that the 1977 legislature consider it again so we will have to fight this again. He mentioned the youth proposals at the convention and stated that they are open to suggestions for any changes in the youth program as they continue to change on the basis of merit. He would like to see many more participating in our youth program as the district has over 10,000 youth certificates.

Editor Rudy Beak extended regards from Maxine. He reported getting a letter from a student at A & M University telling about teaching Czech to 50 students there so this is encouraging to get more Czechs there. He hoped we were following the convention proceedings in the Vestnik. He extended sympathy to Brothers Lostak and Skrabanek and best wishes to Brother Hilsher.

Brother Prochazka asked the delegates to stand. He suggested that the first Sunday in October has several conflicts and we probably should think of a change of date for next year.

DYC Richard Wahlberg reported that were 25 enthusiastic youth at • the meeting. He and Assistant Dan Berry are working on a brochure and will try to contact all youth to get more interested in participating in our youth program. Richard attended the Longhorn Recreation Laboratory, District VI meeting and the SPJST State Youth Leaders Retreat where he was in charge of two study classes. He has a cassette tape recording about one hour long of the child mental de-

7 velopment class and he will be glad to come and play it at any meeting. He and his assistant and their wives traveled over the state looking over four camps and finally found one, the nice camp owned by the Kiwanis Club; there the youth enjoyed many activities. He had a district youth leaders' seminar in May and a YAD and camp planning meeting in July while the district youth had a swim party at the Lodge 88 pool, all enjOyed a buffet later. There were 84 in the district YAD and 61 at the district camp. The district was well represented at the state YAD and Royalty. May I add that it is easy to see that our district youth counselor, his assistant and the lodge youth leaders spend much time in planning and supervising a wonderful youth program, and it is up to you parents to see that your children take advantage of its many benefits.

Brother Prochazka reported that the officers recommend that they be elected at the fall meeting so the youth counselor could start on his camp plans early. Brother Morris pointed out that the by-laws state that the officers be elected at the first meeting of the year. Sister Birdie Hilsher moved that the youth counselor who is in office in January make arrangements for camp, seconded by Victor Peter, and so approved.

Our district regulations state that the officers meet three times a year, and the officers thought that often two meetings were enough.

Tillie Helmcamp moved that the officers hold at least two meetings a year, seconded by Brother Charlie Matcek, and so passed.

Tillie Helmcamp explained the officers' recommendation that we allow the president to serve four years consecutively. Lillian Finn moved that the president can serve four years, seconded by Lydia Hendrick, and so passed.

Mildred Holeman reported on the problem Lodge 88 had with rejection of applicants. She read the petition about the two articles in conflict and also read the letter from Attorney R. 13. Lesikar stating that the articles are not in conflict. She moved that members of this assembly go on record as endorsing the petition to delete Art. 60 from the by-laws and have our district director and the Supreme

Lodge so advised so they could check what could be done about this; seconded by Gene Fischer.

There was a long discussion with comments by Louis Hanus, Richard Wahlberg, President Morris, Sidon Tumis, Frances Olexa, Lillian Finn, F. A. Kadlecek, Rudy Sefeik, Evelyn Mikeska and Tillie Helmcamp.

Brother Morris pointed out that we have Attorney Lesikar's interpretation and also pointed out that Art. 20 states definitely that no one has the authority to change a bylaw; he also stressed the importance of sales representatives being selective. The motion was voted on and approved.

Lodge 81 President Charlie Matcek stated that his lodge would Wu, to host the spring meeting. Brother Louis Hanus so moved, seconded by Brother Ed Kadlecek, and so approved. Brother Kadleeek suggested that we leave it up to the officers to see about changing the date for the fall meeting.

Brother Prochaska presented Mr. W. E. Souchek, teacher of Czech at Alvin Junior, San Jacinto, and Spring Branch Community Colleges; he reported on the great enthusiasm shown by the people wanting to learn Czech. Brother Louis Hanus moved that District V go on record to reco.anuend to the Supreme Lodge to cheek if there is a way we could subsidize the teachers of Czech in junior and community colleges, seconded by Brother Elmer Russell, and passed unanimously.

Brother Hanus stated that he was grateful for the ruling at the convention permitting social mem4 bers to participate and for the extra 1% added to the refunds to the lodges.

Brother Schuhmann thanked the members of his lodge for their hard work and thanked Lodge 142 for allowing them to use their premises which shows their true fraternalism. He announced that a free dance with music lyy the Country Sounds would follow the meeting.

Della Kadlecek announced about the Czech dolls the sales representatives had.

Brother Harley Cox invited all to come to Lodge 88's annual Czech Day on Sunday, Oct. 24th. There will be a turkey and dressing dinner served from 11:30 on and bands playing outside on the gazebo Clarence Baca playing from 12 to 3

VESTN1K and Galen Ackley from 3 to 6. The Ettinger Combo will play for the free dance in the ballroom froth 5 to 9 p.m. Harley announced the pool will be open if the weather permits and all SPJST members of any lodge can go in free and other guests will pay 50c. He also announced that the only thing you have to pay for is the meal; all entertainment will be free. Brother Hanes reported on the fine program in the ballroom. That wonderful Convention Choral Group will be here to sing some of those beautiful songs they did so perfectly at the convention. The lodge choral group and the lodge concert orchestra will perform and so will the Beseda dancers, the Victoria Singers and some special youth performers. Brother Hanus hoped that you would wear your Czech costumes and get in the Grand March preceding the free dance.

Brother Matcek announced that Lodge No. 81 is having its annual barbecue on Sunday, Oct. 10th and invited all to come.

Brother Henry Linhart invited all to come to the barbecue and dance at Lodge No. 142, Saturday, Oct. 16th. That will be good barbecue and also good music, so don't miss it.

LODGE NO. 185, NEW BRAUNFELS Dear Members and Friends: Our regular meeting was held Sept. 24th, at 920 Highway 78, Schertz.

President Slavik called the meeting to order.

In the absence of the flag bearer, "Daughter" Jasek and Jeff Mokry presented the flag and led the the pledge of allegiance.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and the treasurer's report given; both were approved as read.

President Slavik again stated the need for a charter for the lodge, and after a short discussion, the subject was tabled until the next meeting when more information would be available. The meeting was adjourned and a social hour followed.

Our hostess, Sister Slavik, served snacks and cookies which were enjoyed.

LODGE NO. 172, PASADENA Dear Members, The last executive meeting was held on Sept. 22, with a good attendance. The next regular meeting will be held Wednesday, Oct. 13th. We urge all the members to please attend this very important meeting.

Several of our members who have been on the sick list are recuperating.

The last dance held at our lodge Saturday, Sept. 25th, was a free dance which was enjoyed by a large crowd dancing to the beautiful music provided by Alvin Linhart and the Sugarlenders. Oct. 23rd Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen will play for the dance.

Be sure and come out for a night of fun and good music. Also don't forget the dance on November 6th with music by Alvin Linhart and the Sugarlanders.

Baker — sPJST — LODGE NO. 48, BEYERSVILLE Dear Members: The Beyersville SPJST Lodge No. 48 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, Oct. 3rd at 3 p.m. Ginger Wuensche led the pledge of allegiance. We are very proud of our District II Queen Becky Swanson coming In as second runner-up in the State Royalty Contest. Congratulations to her!

During our next month's meeting, we will have election of officers; also we will celebrate our lodge's anniversary. There will be a meeting at 3 p.m., followed by a covered dish supper and free refreshments. Members may bring guests. The date is set for Nov. 7th.

There will be a general cleanup Oct. 21st at 6 p.m. The children will have a Halloween party afterward. Parents are asked to bring sandwiches for supper after the cleanup.

Fraternally, Sharon Beran Reporter - SPJST — CZECH DAY AT LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON The members of Lodge 88 cordially invite all SPJST members and their friends to attend the 58th Anniversary of the First Czechoslovak Republic. The anniversary will be observed during our Czech Day celebration on Sunday, Oct. 24th at Houston. The accompanying picture is the original 45-voice chorus formed for the XXII SPJST convention in June of 1976 from singers recruited from over the state. Most of the people in the picture are members of the SPJST. Many members of the chorus will perform during the planned Czech Day program in Houston, and we are proud to present this fine group of singers for your entertainment during our Czech Day program Another group of singers that will participate during the program will be the recording and talented Czech Singers of Victoria.

They have been together as a group the past 5 years and have been singing all over the state, of Texas . . . this is a must to see.

The Olympic-style swimming pool will be open from 12 to 6 p.m. and all members of the SPJST will be admitted free. Guests and friends will be charged 50 cents. A delicious turkey dinner will be served and parts of the celebration will be filmed in color and sound.

The 45-Voice 'Mind SPJST Convention Chorus will Houston, October 24th.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters: Well, I hope everyone has made plans to be at Lodge for our annual Czech Day, Oct. 24th. There will be so many things going on that day that you probably won't know which one to get into next. A turkey and dressing dinner will be served from 11:30 on and the ladies are asked to please bring a pastry donation. Polka music will be provided in the gazebo from 12 to 3 and then a country/western band will play from 3 to 5. And there will be something different this year: if the weather is nice, the swimming pool will be open from 12 to 8. The Concert Orchestra will be playing inside at 1:15, and at 2, the program begins. SL President Nick Morris will be the guest speaker and Mr. Phil Hewitt will present a film entitled, "Texane Ceskeho Piivodu." LODGE NO. 4, IIALLETTSVILLE Dear Members: Our lodge held its monthly meeting Sunday, Sept. 19th, at the Grant Building. President Frank Zabransky presided over the meeting.

The pledge to the U.S. flag was led by the youth club, followed by a short program.

Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the July and August meetings, which were approved after minor corrections. Correspondence followed.

Youth Leader Helen Zabransky gave her report on the youth club.

She reported among other activities that our youth were very successful at the State YAD, with Mark Sevcik placing 1st in Constructed Items; Kim Drozd, 2nd in Hobby Kits; Melissa Holy, 3rd in Home Arts and Arlene Zak, 3rd in Home Arts. Our youth club was also named one of the top ten clubs in the state and received a beautiful plaque.

It was stated that Brother Charles Galetka had passed away the day before, Saturday, Sept. 18th at a Yoakum rest home. Sincere sympathy to his family.

On the sick list are Brother Charles Holy, retired lodge secretary, and Erwin Holy, lodge secretary.

A report on Family Day was given.

The president reminded the members of the District VI fall meeting to be held in New Taiton, Sunday, Oct. 3rd.

Refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned with refreshments and lunch served.

August birthdays honored were Albina Dornak, Patsy Zabransky, Laurie Chudej, Gary Chudej, Otto Holy and Erwin Holy. September birthdays were Hilmer and Gaye Galetka and Arlene Zak. Wednesday, October 13, 1976 ANNUAL MEETING AT LODGE NO. 9, SNOOK SPJST Lodge No. 9, Snook is scheduling their annual meeting on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1976 at the Snook Hall.

Each family is to bring enough chicken for their family and a group of the members will be on hand to barbecue. Have the chickens at the hall no later than 3 p.m. that day. The lodge will furnish the trimmings. Ladies are asked to bring a sweet.

Supper will be served at 6:30 and the annual meeting will follow immediately.

Each lodge member is urged to attend. This is your lodge, so let's support it.

LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Readers: Lodge No. 6 held its October meeting on Sunday, Oct. 3rd. The pledge of allegiance to the American flag was led by youth members Delores Dobecka and Lanette Hykel.

Delores then said the SPJST pledge.

There were 14 members present at this meeting. All reports were given and approved as read.

In her youth report, Sister Schuetz reported that the youth had an outing at Spivey's Crossing, Sept. 19th. At State Royalty held at Academy, David Dobecka represented District III. The youth are planning to go to Six Flags Oct. 10th; to the rest home, Oct. 13th.

There will be an RVOS meeting Oct. 17th. The youth will have their Halloween party Oct. 29th.

Birthdays for October include: Debbie Uptmor, Terry Hykel, Lanette Hykel and Bobby Svrcek. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Schuetz will have an anniversary this month.

In her card committee report (given by Sister Schuetz in the absence of Sister Dobecka) the following cards were sent during the month of September: Birthday — Aubrey Uptmor, Ruthie Schuetz and Eddie Marek Sympathy — G. LODGE NO. 107, FLORESVILLE Dear Members, Lodge No. 107 held its regular meeting Oct. 3rd, at 4:30 p.m. Flag Bearer Jeff Pavliska along with President Bob Bayer, led the membership in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

Roll call of officers showed that Vice President William Pavliska. and Treasurer Michael Baumann were absent.

Minutes were read and approved as read. President Bayer took care of all correspondence. A financial report was also given by him. Financial Secretary Hrna reported some delinquent members and stated that these would be notified again of their delinquency.

Donna Lynn Cordes was accepted as a new member. Youth Leader Polly Bayer reported that the youth club is to be well represented in the Peanut Festival. They will enter a car in the parade. Queen Teresa Purchis and King Mark Purchis with their duke and duchess, Jason Heritage and Wendy Bayer, will ride on the float. The youth club also sponsors the peanut shelling contest at the festival.

This contest was held at 4 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 9th. The contest was open to all who thought they were fast peanut shellers.

Now that it is cooler and the nights are longer we will resume our game parties after the meetings. All of our members, especially those with paid-up policies, come out and enjoy the fellowship at the meetings and socials that follow. As you have read from my reports, the hall is undergoing some nice changes. Come out and see for yourself. Also, this is a request to all members with paid up certificates to please pay your local dues so that you may participate in all the functions. We need you and we think it will be worth your time and effort to remain

11 active in our lodge affairs.

Terri Rose Burleson won the door prize for October.

Meeting adjourned after payment of dues. Refreshments were enjoyed by all present.

Be sure and remember that elections are to be held at the November meeting.

We will also have our annual social and installation of officers at our December meeting. Watch for the December meeting date. We want all of you to come out and enjoy the social. Assn., Chapter 9, will have a meeting Oct. 17th which will be held at the National Hall 3316 Roberts Cut-Off Road. The meeting will convene at 2 p.m.

As is customary at the October meeting there will be election of officers for the coming year so all of you members are urged to attend this meeting. The officers and various committees will give their reports of the business that has been transacted since the last meeting.

After the meeting the Entertainment Committee will serve a meal which they have prepared along with the liquid refreshments that the local chapter furnishes. The ladies are asked to please bring pastries of any kind to go with the meal. They always bring such a good variety of cakes, pies and kolace that all of us ha rdly know when to stop eating.

We extend our sympathy to Sister Esta, Belle Hubenak and her family on the loss of her husband, Brother Joe Ilubenak who passed away Sept. 8th. He and Sister Hubenak attended our meetings faithfully and he will be missed at our meetings.

Brother John Murphy was hospitalized recently for surgery on his leg and Brother Joe Becan was also in the hospital with a sore leg. We hope both of them are

12 feeling much better by now.

We were happy to see Brother and Sister Bob Easley, Brother and Sister Anton Tirk and Sister Mary Juan at our last meeting. Some of our elderly members are not always able to attend our meetings but we are always glad to see them when they can.

FEATURES CALVIN CHERVENKA MASTER OF CEREMONIES AT CZECH DAY AT STATE FAIR

Calvin Chervenka, a member of the Temple Junior College faculty, was master of ceremonies for the 36th annual Czech-American Day at the State Fair of Texas, Oct. 10th, in Dallas.

Chervenka, an authority on Czechs in Texas, has been associated with Czech Day at the State Fair since 1967. For the past six years he has served as either master of ceremonies or guest speaker at the special programs at the Coliseum, Women's Building, Band Shell and Big Tex Stage.

Chervenka teaches physics and engineering and is coordinator of Czech courses at TJC. He has been active in Czech culture activities throughout the state and has served as a consultant to the Institute of Texan Cultures and has done extensive research and writing about Czechs in Texas. He also has made numerous appearances at Czech festivals and programs throughout the state and has spoken at many times to civic groups and organizations. He initiated the Czech course at TJC, the first junior college in the state to offer Czech in recent years.

"This celebration is a good example of the Czech culture being kept alive by Czech-Texans," Chervenka said.

Czechs began coming to Texas in sizable numbers about 1850 and Chervenka estimates there may be as many as one million persons of Czech descent (either by birth or marriage) now living in Texas. "Although well assimilated into the American culture, the Czechs have

VESTNIK retained their language and ethnic identity through their organizations and the practice of their cultural heritage," he said. "Czech is the third most spoken language in Texas, after English and Spanish."

The Czech Day program is sponsored by the American Czech Cultural Society which represents major Czech fraternals and organizations in Texas.

A warm welcome was extended by Bro. Jerry Tomastik, president of Lodge No. 177, Academy.

The Royalty Competition Program was opened by SYD Dorothy Massey on Saturday, Sept. 25th, with Lodge 177, Academy as host lodge. queens competing for the state titles in an atmosphere that was fitting to the occasion. The lodge had the stage and runway decorated beautifully with greenery and mirrored streamers. Toward the front of the red-covered runway were two baskets of fresh fall flowers, compliments of the host lodge and youth club.

Organ music during the competition and the fanfares for each contestant and the winners was furnished by Barnell Berry and his daughter, Pam. Bland, of Temple. They added a lot to the program by playing a short musical interlude after each speech, fitting to the topic that each candidate spoke on.

To start the program, flag- bearers James Va-nek (32) and Stephen Morris (47) presented the colors and led the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Welcoming the audience was Dlistorict II President Alice Banning, Lodge President Jerry Tornastik, and State Youth Director Dorothy Massey. MCing the program were State Queen Jan Hajda

and State King Stephen Parrish.

Congratulations to Miss Charlotte Banik and Mr. Randy Flasowski, the chosen 1976-'77 State King and Queen. Charlotte represented District III, and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Banik of West, all members of Lodge 35 Elk. Randy is the son of Mr.and Mrs. Wallace Plasowski, Lodge 74 Lovelady and resides in Crockett. We are all very proud of these fine young people and their picture (which was made just after they were chosen) will appear on the 1977 calendar.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR'S QUARTERLY REPORT This quarterly report for June, July and August shows we still have over 650 youth attending meetings each month throughout the state.

I just wonder how many more attended from the youth clubs that did not send in a report. Even though the summer months are full of outside activities for our young people, a large majority still found time to attend the meetings and other activities and socials planned at the lodges for them.

This figure includes the youth clubs who reported less than the average 10 members for each meeting, (even though they did not receive a reimbursement check). The at-

tendance may not be enough to receive a check, but they are never so small that they don't count. Every monthly meeting and every eligible youth club member counts.

Now that all summer activities are history, let's start working to get new members into our youth clubs before Oct. 31st so they can be eligible for the activities next summer. The Youth Rule Book, on page 10, No. 4, says, "A youth must be a member of the SPJST before Oct. 31st and attend a majority of the meetings either in an organized youth club or lodge meetings where there is not a youth club" to participate in YAD and camp. Dear Members: I am sorry I haven't been writing as often as maybe I should since school started. I will try and do better.

Our last meeting was real good and everything went well. The birdfeeders were our craft; quite a few made them. First place went to Robert Spacek; 2nd to Bobby Mikulin, and 3rd to Theresa Zags.bay.

After our meeting was over we all went on a skating party to Rockdale and we had a lot of fun.

Fraternally, Hiytti Hosea (11) Reporter (10-2-76) — SPJST --LODGE NO. 130, DALLAS Dear Vestnik Readers, On Oct. 3rd the youth of Lodge 130 visited Old City Park. We saw the houses that the first settlers built when they migrated to Dallas.

There was a beautiful manor house, a general store, a train depot, a small log cabin and a play house, and other restored buildings.

Different lodges had game booths, and some lodges even performed.

Our lodge did quite a bit of pertformance. Karen Kahanek sang Chrystal Chandeliers, Melissa Zboril sang Paper Roses, our little group did a dance to Whistle While you Work, which won 1st place at district. Our big group did the same dance that they did at district and won 1st at state, vihich was, Celumbus Stockade Blues. We were

For our project we collected paper and also nylon hosiery.

For the month of October, we collect Post and Campbell labels, newspapers, used toys and clothes.

Our trip to Six Flags was scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 10th, which will be over with by the time this appears in the Vestnik. Oct. 19th we will go to the rest home at West. A Halloween party is planned for Oct. 29th.

The birthdays for this month are: Terry Hykel, Lennett Hykel and Debbie Uptmor. Darrell Uptmor brought the birthday cake.
