FROM HE EDITOR'S DESK In this issue we write to point to several facts pertinent to our SPJST Society. wei have pointed out lessons that our conventions have taught us and here is another lesson all of us, as members (and especially our delegates), should observe. Read carefully, on page 7 beginning with the second column with the Salaries & Donations Committee report of what transpired. Read carefully and see how much time was wasted in useless discussion when the S & D Committee had spent 2 1/2 days weighing the pros and cons of what would be best for the Society and then it was taken to nieces by delegates who had not given enough thought to what was actually involved. Read pages 7 and 8 carefully and you will see that one hour and fifteen minutes were taken up (from 11:15 to 12:30) and all was reconsidered when the convention was reconvened after the noon meal. Brother Raymond Holubec (Lodge 20, Granger) stated it very appropriately when he said: "Why have a S & D Committee if you are going to pick the report to, pieces on the (convention) floor?" For the future it would be advisable to hear each committee report in full and then consider it instead of taking it piece by piece. In the next issue you will see that, in the afternoon session, after everyone had eaten and had

HOME 'Tis sweet to hear the watch-dog's honest bark Bay deep-mouth'd welcome as we draw near home; 'Tis sweet to know there is an eye will mark Our coming, and look brighter when we. come. —Byron * * It takes a heap o' livin' in a house t' make it home A heap o' sun an' shedder, an' ye sometimes have t' roam Afore ye really 'preciate the things ye lef' behind, An' hunger fer 'em somehow, with 'em allus on yer mind. —F.. A. Guest time to think about the report, the entire matter was settled in a matter of minutes. Your editor does not recommend that every committee report be accepted ipso facto, however the reports should be heard in their entirety before being considered because the entire report of a committee does give a broader view of the problem the committee members considered. As a natural process in each convention we learn by doing and learn where to "cut corners." * * We spoke of "cutting corners" In the above part of our editorial. The' first annual Westfest at West was held Saturday and Sunday,

Sept. 4th and 5th. Since this was a first-time event of this type for the City of West, a city of about 2,400 inhabitants, it required endless hours of preparations and work for all involved and, with an estimated attendance of approximately 40,000 in the two days, the workload and traffic was overwhelming and yet was accomplished and everyone seemed happy. Many times the expression was heard that "West was really a friendly city." Well, that is the way everyone in West wants it to Abe and hope to live up to the attitude of West being a friendly place to live in and/or visit. The term was heard more than once on the clean-up of the grounds Monday, Labor Day, Sept. 6th, "We will have to learn to 'cut corners' next year!" Labor Day was indeed a day of labor for many, many people of West, however, in a dedicated and friendly way, it was done and Tuesday morning everyone settled down to a normal day of work. We were pleasantly amazed at the great number of our SPJST members and friends who attended Westfest and stopped by the office and/or the grounds for a brief visit and handshake. It seems that there is a relative of everyone in Texas living in West. We had visitors from Wisconsin, North Carolina, Canada, etc., and, frankly, were pleasantly surprised. West invites you to visit again.
