--Thackeray * • Sunday, August 29th was the date of our SPJST annual YAD in Talent, Arts. Crafts, etc., and it proved to be wonderful again. SYD Dorothy Massey has a rather thorough report on the day's activities in the Youth Section in this issue, so please read it.

There were a number of people who remarked, to this writer, about the excellent quality of the Arts and Crafts and the home-cooked foods and, quite frankly, all of the entries. Everyone seemed to be thrilled about all of the talent and it would seem that the decision of our entire Youth Department in their last meeting of the department head, state youth director and seven district youth directors, to allow applause after each talent performance was a very wise and sensible one. Indeed, in some cases the spontaneous applause during the performance had a rather marked effect on the youth and seemed to spur them on to even greater effort, even though that did not in any case seem to

Mrs. Charles (Jennie) Gajdosik, 94, of West, died Thursday, August 26th in West Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West, with Rev. George' Doskocil officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Sister Gajdosik was a member of Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE XXIInd CONVENTION HELD IN WACO, TEXAS, JUNE 14-17, 1976 Afternoon Session June 15, 1976 The afternoon session resunfed at 1:30, called to order by C Pokladnik.

President Morris reminded delegates and guests of the Convention Spectacular tonight and urged everyone to go. It will be in the Chisholm Room. The dance after will be in the Brazos Room where we are now meeting.

The committee on salaries and donations, Chmn. Jerry Prochazka (65), made a partial report at this time concerning per diem payments and mileage payments to convention participants. The report is part of these minutes. B. J. Kadlecek (88) moved to approve the report and Dir. Henry E. Vitek (20) seconded the motion. Motion carrieBrien Jarmo, (84), chairman of the insurance Comm., presented his report. This report was published in the June 2nd issue of the Vestnik and a copy is made a part of the minutes. The report includes recommendations which were made to the By-Laws Committee.

Vice President Joe B. Hejny (47) said that studies indicated that the items in the insurance report were sound and recommended its acceptance. Insurance Comm. Chmn.

Jarma moved the insurance report be accepted as presented. Paul Hagar (84) seconded the motion.

Motion carried.

The Publication Committee is meeting now in Ranger Room 3 where bids are to be opened for publication of the Vestnik.

Darlene Engelke (66), chairman of the Credentials Comm., announced that Delegate E. H. Zalmanek (88) had to leave for emergency reasons at 4 p.m. today and requested that his alternate, Clara

(h) Arnold Vrla (130) said that Lodge 130 had presented a proposed change to the By-Laws Comm. raising the 7% refund to 8%. The proposal did not carry. (w) approved as presented. (y) approved as presented, "effective immediately" was added.

An additional part was added after (z) as follows: "The Supreme Lodge will periodically hold workshops for the training of local lodge officers." This was approved as presented.

The convention recessed at 3:15 P.m.

Helen N. Oates Pauline Shiller * * The meeting reconvened at 3:35 p.m. with Vice Chmn. Navratil presiding. Delegates were asked to submit corrections to the morning minutes. Robert Bayer (107) made the correction that Pres. Morris was also invited to meet with State Youth Director Dorothy Massey and the Youth Comm. Tillie Helmcamp (88) said that the minutes needed to be more explicit in regards to her comments made in the morning session. Frances Vala (88) stated that Chairman Milan be corrected to read, By Law Chairman. Lillian Finn (88) said that Tillie Helmcamp (88) made the motion to delete the words "legal advisor" instead of Mildred Holeman (88). H. M. Swonke (181) said his lodge is 181 instead of 81.

Robert J. Bayer (107) moved that the minutes be accepted with corrections. Otto Harms (66) seconded the motion. Reuben Lesikar, Legal Advisor, said more time should be spent by the delegates in reading the minutes and therefore, not be voted on at the present time. The motions were retracted so the delegates could read the minutes and

the minutes will be voted on Wednesday morning.

Lithe 1VIatejka (39) gave the Youth Comm report. She moved that her recommendations be accepted. Robert Bayer (107) seconded the motion. Pres. Morris (66) asked the delegates to grant him permission to review recommendation by the Youth Comm. as he was in another meeting at the time. Arnold Vrla (130) moved that this request be granted to Pres. Morris. Henry Vitek (20) said the report contained too many drastic changes and a copy should be given to each delegate •before being acted upon. John Murphy (92) moved that the motion be tabled temporarily. Albert Kubala (92) seconded the motion•. Dan Balusek (47) asked the delegates to look in their By-Laws on presidential duties. Albert Banik (35) said that previously the Youth Comm. report had been tabled, and never was given enough time to be presented again. Chmn. Pokladnik took over the session. John Murphy (92) said that a vote has to be taken to table a motion. The motion to table the motion was passed. Wilma Nesuda (25) a member of the Youth Comm., said they would like time to explain their report. By-law Comm Chmn. Milan read Art. 32-e to read, "he assures that funds are available for loans at the suggestion of the Supreme Lodge." Art. 32-e passed.

Art. 38-b to insert "in." Art. 38-b was passed, Art. 39 a, b, c - no change.

Article 40-a - no change.

Article 40-b - was then discussed.

Rudy Hafner (74) stated that his lodge had applied for a $70,000 loan and had paid the application fee and then he applied for an additional $40,000 and now had to pay an application fee biased on $110,000. Chmn Pokladnik said this was not appropriate to this article.

John Kubena (1) said that Article 40-b should remain as is. He said that it was better to get, a good appraisal if the Article was not changed. Emil Matula (133) spoke in defense of a change. A. L. Wisher (88) also felt that the Article should remain as is. Vice President Hejny (47) said this had been discussed at the Supreme Lodge and that he was willing to go along with the proposal of the By-Law

Wednesday, September 8, 1976 Comm. He also felt the Supreme Lodge should pay the expense rather than a local lodge whenever a director is sent out to make an appraisal for a loan. Paul Sablatura (40) agreed with Bro. Kubena for the article to remain the same. Matt Vanek (32) concurred with Bro. Sablatura and Bro. Kubena. Mildred Holeman (88) said there were three approaches to an appraisal and that she agreed with the By-Law Comm. Henry Vitek (20) said he proposed the change to the By-Law Comm., but it was changed from the way he presented it and he could not support the committee's article. Vernon Wood (35) said that if the directors cannot handle the job they should get out. Matt Vanek (32) said the directors are held responsible for their decisions. Wanda Kennedy (88) said that we should give attention to the directors. Dan Balusek (47) said that one director should be sufficient to make a $30,000 loan because they are all knowledgeable. Art. 40-b was approved as presented.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska (24) feels that the Supreme Lodge can bear the appraisal fee rather than the local lodges. Pres. Morris supported Sec.-Treas. Mikeska's statement. By-Law Comm .Chmn. Milan said that the By-Law Comm. would check into this. Pres. Morris said the Supreme Lodge could not refinance any loans that have already been made. Monte. Foster (79) asked that Sec.-Treas. Mikeska's proposal be effective immediately. Jerry Mikulas, Jr. (47) asked if this proposal has been submitted to the By-Law Comm. before. By-Law Comm. Chmn. Milan said that it had not. Rudy Hafner (74) asked why he had been charged twice for his loan. Chmn.

Pokladnik said the By-Laws gave the Supreme Lodge the right to charge these appraisal fees. Tillie Helmcamp (88) asked where in the By-Laws it was stated. Sec.-Treas.

Mikeska (24) said the appraisal fee was not provided for in the bylaws. These fees are established by the Supreme Lodge and are based on new amount of loan. Legal Advisor Reuben Lesikar (291) said these appraisal fees have been set through the years and he supported Sec.-Treas. Mikeska's proposal not to charge the local lodges an appraisal fee. Rudy Hafner (74)

was glad to have his question answered and explained.

Legal Advisor Reuben Lesikar (29) asked the delegates to study Sec.Treas. Mikeskas proposal. Rudy Hafner (74) recommended that the Supreme Lodge attach a note to any loans made stating what the final cost would be. Chinn. Pokladnik said this was now a law.

Emil Petr (84) said Brother Baffler should not feel alone that it had happened to them. The delegates voted to return Sec-Treas.

Mikeska's proposal to the ByLaw Comm. for deliberation.

F. A. Ka.dlecek (88) said Art. 44 should read "teaching" instead of "instructing." John Murphy (92) asked why the words "on request" were left out of the article. Monta Foster (79) said to add "in Texas" otherwise might include the entire United States. Wanda Kennedy (88) asked if this article will not have to be tabled because of the possibility of making the Vestnik bi-weekly. By-Law Comm.

Chairman Milan said that we would not. He also stated he would like the Vestnik not to be limited just to Texas. Pres. Morris had sent the Vestniks without requests to the schools but only in Texas, Frank Sembera, (88) asked if there was not a law saying that a newspaper with advertisements should have a subscriber or a request list.

Pres. Morris said the Vestnik controls circulation and that no revenue is received by the SPJST from the advertisement. The By-Law Comm. said that they would add "on request" and John Murphy (92) put this in the form of a motion.

Vernon Wood (35) seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Art. 46-a through g — no change.

Alvin Sefcik (173) said that he would like to submit an addition to Art. 49-h, that "if a letter is censored by more than one-half, then the letter should be sent back to the writer before publication." B yLaw Comm. Chinn. Milan said that this was already covered in the by-laws. Wanda Kennedy (88) said to add "in entirety." Arnold Vrla (130) said Publication Committee should send material back to the sender before the publication.

Lillian Finn (88) supported Wanda Kennedy. Albert Banik (35) asked

5 that Bro. Sefcik explain this. Vice President Hejny suggested that this article contain "no letter may be published in its censored form without the written consent of the writer." Johnnie Krizan (6) suggested that the consent be written.

Editor Sefcik (54) said the Publication Comm. instructed the editor not to print anything that would take up more space than is necessary. Editor Sefcik explained that Bro. Sefcik's letter contained information that had already transpired.

Art. 46-h passed.

Hubert Gorubec (20) moved that this be effective immediately. Louis Hanus (88) seconded the motion.

H. M. Swonke (181) said that Dist. V should include Montgomery County. Einil Mogonye (18) asked for Lodge 18 to be transferred from Dist. I to Dist. II. President Morris said that this would split up Bastrop County and Lodge 38, Kovar, would remain in Dist. I, with Lodge 18, Elgin, in Dist. II. Jos. Slavik (185) said that Dist. VII should include Guadalupe and Comal Counties. Hugo Kocian (178) said Dist.

III should include Gregg County.

Dennis Barabas (180) said Dist. III should include Johnson County.

Edwin Adamek (29) moved that Elgin Lodge 18 be accepted into Dist. IL Dan Grossman (80) seconded the motion. Alvin Sefcik (173) asked if this would affect the district voting status at this convention. Chmn. Pokladnik said that these changes did not become effective until Jan. 1, 1977. Motion carried on additions and changes to Art. 53-a.

Art. 53-e — deleted the word "his" and added "the member to the finance committee and substitute." Pres. Morris said he had several inquiries as to who presides over district caucuses. He suggested that the district director

6 preside until a permanent chairman could be elected by the delegates. The By-Law Comm. asked to be given time to study this addition. The request was approved.

Art. 53-g — Arnold Vrla (130) made a motion that each district receive 25 cents a year for every insured member who has attained the age of 16 years, instead of the 15 cents Zephyr Marek (174) seconded. David Huff, actuary, was asked if this increase was feasible.

An approximate cost was determined and Actuary Huff said this amount could be paid.

Wanda Kennedy (88) asked for clarification of the 16-year age limit. Her question was answered

by Chmn. Pokladnik. The motion was passed, Mildred Holemon (88) announced that the Resolution Comm. will meet after adjournment and any resolutions should be turned in before noon Wednesday.

The Grievance Comm. was to meet after adjournment.

Albert Banik (35) requested persons in the last five rows to take their personal belongings with them so that the dance could be held at 9 p.m.

Louis Hanus (88) said the Publication Committee would report on Wednesday morning. Johnnie Krizan (6) said Jeanette Smith (66) had tickets for sale for the dance after adjournment and none would be available tonight. Lillie Matejka (39) announced the Youth Comm. would meet with Pres. Morris at 8 a.m. Wednesday. Editor Sefcik (54) was to introduce Publisher Pescaia and his wife but again they were not present. Birdie Hilsher (88) asked those who had ordered cookbooks to pick them up. Chairman Pokladnik reminded district directors to take a roll call of their district.

Johnnie Krizan (6) announced that the price for the large group picture would be $27.50. Any orders for these large pictures should be placed before 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Chairman Pokladnik entertained the motion that we adjourn. Otto Harms (66) moved that we adjourn.

Pokladnik stated that the corrected minutes would be acted on during the afternoon session. Jerry Prochazka (65) announced that the Salaries and Donations Committee would meet in Ranger Roam 4 and then Ed Mazanec (66), chairman of the Publication Committee, asked for a delay in giving his report so that the committee members could sign it.

Chmn. Pokladnik announced that corsages could be ordered at the Information Desk from 9:30 to break time today, cost would be $2.50, $3.50, and $5.50 plus tax.

Roll call of delegates was done by the district directors and showed all delegates present.

Richard Wahlberg (88) made a motion that we give proper recognition to the performers and the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra for a wonderful performance at the Tuesday night Spectacular. Jerry Ermis (88) seconded the motion.

Motion passed.

• Darlene Engelke (66) gave the final credentials report4 Fifteen lodges were not represented: 11, 19, 31, 41, 57, 76, 85, 90, 103, 106, 118, 122, 151, 168, and 170. Five lodges had credentials but no delegates had been sent: 10, 77, 82, 129, 147.

There were 326 delegates present out of a possible 339. There had been one change of delegates in Lodge 88. One hundred and one (101) lodges out of a possible 123 were present. Sister Engelke said the other two members of her committee were Leon Zavodny (47) and Adolph Dusek (16). She thanked President Morris and Vice President Hejny for selecting them to serve. The Credentials Committee recommended monthly meetings for each lodge unless special permission was granted from the Supreme Lodge to hold them quarterly. They also recommended that each lodge keep records of attendance. Each lodge's credentials should state the number of meetings held and the number of meetings that the delegates attended.

She moved that this report be accepted. The Credentials Comm. re-

port was approved.

Ed Mazanec (66), chairman of the Publication Comm., gave his report. He stated that much study was given to select the best publisher for the Vestnik. He mentioned that his committee has given the editor the right to print good pictures on the front page of the Vestnik. The committee also granted the Supreme Lodge the right to use the third page for reports. In the interest of conserving space, they cut down the format of the print. They allowed the Supreme Lodge to use the front and back pages for Christmas and New Year greetings. They feel they had a good editor and there was much harmony between the editor and the committee. The Publication Committee's report is made a part of these minutes. The Publication Comm. recommended to the delegates taking all bids into consideration to award the bid to the Cechoslovak Publishing Co. Lillian Finn (88) commented on the wonderful report and that the Cechoslovak Publishing Ca. has our interest at heart. Sister Finn moved that the report of the committee be accepted. Otto Hanus (66) seconded the motion. The report of the Publication Comm. was approved.

Otto Hanus (66) moved that we keep the same format for the Vestnik. This was seconded by Lad Cmajdalka (1). Motion was accepted.

Lillian Finn (88) made a motion that the contract be given to the Cechoslovak Publishing Co. Emil Matula (133) seconded the motion.

Motion carried.

Editor Rudy Sefcik (54) said he would like to introduce the publishers Linn and Sue Pescaia. They will be allowed to speak this afternoon when the other guests are recognized.

Annie Steiner (84) said there was a difference between hi-weekly and semi-monthly. Editor Rudy Sefcik (54) said the Vestnik would continue to be published on a weekly basis.

Frank Sembera (88) asked if Actuary David Huff was giving further study to changing the :amount of refunds from 7% to 8%.

Chmn. Pokladnik said for him to bring this back up when the ByLaw Comm. was in session.

The new Art. 40(b) was discussed and effective immediately was to be added.

Rudy Heiner (74) asked about a retainer fee and if the above article would apply to this. By-Law Comm.

Chinn. Milan said this had not been considered. Legal Advisor Reuben Lesikar (29) said there is no fee as such and the application fee is paid to the Secretary-Treasurer of the Supreme Lodge. There is a title or abstract fee. Art. 40(b) was approved.

John Murphy (92) asked if the word "meetings" at the beginning of Art. 53(e) should not be changed to "caucuses." By-La,w Comm.

Chinn. Milan said the committee would rather change "caucus" to "meeting."

Rudolph Zalman (35) asked why the previous procedure of electing district directors was omitted from the 1972 by-laws. By-Law Comm.

Chmn. Milan said that the method was rather lengthy and he felt that the district could do it on their own.

Rudolph Zalman (35) said that he felt there were enough officers in the district to pass on the chairmanship in case of absence. Chmn.

Pokladnik said that he had spoken on the issue twice and called for the vote. Motion carried.

Matt Vanek (32) asked if Art. 53(b) had been acted on. By-Law Comm. Chmn. Milan said it had and stressed that a district must hold at least one meeting, but could have more if so desired.

Frank Sembera (88) asked if the actuary had the information on raising the refund from 7 to 8 percent. David Huff, actuary, said this would take more time to study and was concerned that this rate may be too high. He felt that the present 7 percent can be maintained.

Louis Hanus (88) asked if he could question Actuary Huff and if he did not receive the answer he wanted, could he then ask the delegates for a two-third vote to bring it to the floor at a later date.

Chmn. Pokladnik said he could.

Brother Hanus asked why this

information had not been brought to the convention and presented to the convention. He felt this increase in refunds was important to the smaller lodges. He also felt that the directors should stand up more and give their views. He asked that Actuary David Huff study this and see if possible we could not give the additional 1 percent.

Matt Vanek (32) said this information could be requested by mail 90 days before the convention so the Supreme Lodge could review it for presentation to the delegates.

Arnold Vrla (130) said this proposal had been submitted to the By-Law Comm. in March rather than to the Supreme Lodge.

Matt Vanek (32) said the By-Law Comm. should present any proposals to the Supreme Lodge for study.

Tillie Helmcamp (88) felt that if it was sent in March there had been ample time for the Supreme Lodge to study it. She said she always hears about a surplus and how much it was.

Lillie Matejka (39) said the Saprerne Lodge should have had plenty of time to study it.

Actuary David Huff said there were $22,000,000 in assets, $18,000,000 in liabilities and $4,000,000 surplus. A 1 percent increase at this time wdtdd cost $15,000 per year. This $15,000 would not hurt us now but he was projecting into the future. He asked if this amount could be cut down if needed. He wanted to make it clear that he could not say for sure that we could afford the $15,000 per year at this time on the current rate book.

Helen Hegwood (88) felt that most lodges would return the money if needed.

Hon. Pres. Edw. L. 1Vlarek (24) said he could understand Actuary Huffs vision into the future and that the delegates should consider the future.

Manta Foster (79) felt that 8 percent would not be too much and recommended that refund be changed to 8 percent.

Vice President Hejny (47) recommended that we go up to 8 percent as we have enough surplus for the next four years.

President Morris (66) stated the Finance Comm. will be meeting between now and the next convention and would be able to study the state of the finances. President Morris recommended the rate in-

crease.

Louis Hanus (88) moved that we increase refunds from '7 to 8 percent. Arnold Vrla, (130) seconded it. Hon. Pres. Edward L. Marek (24) said we should first vote on reconsidering yesterday's vote on Art. 36(h).

Richard Wahlberg (88) moved that we reconsider Art. 36(h). Evelyn Vornsand (88) seconded the motion. This motion passed by more than two-thirds majority.

Sec,-Treas. Leonard Mikeska (24) said "effective immediately" should be .added to Art. 36(h) according to the by-laws.

Louis Hanus (88) then restated his motion to add "effective' immediately" Art. 36(h) was approved.

Actuary David Huff asked that a study be made before the next convention on the level of refunds.

Louis Harms (88) made the motion to study the level of refunds.

Frank Klinkovsky (47) seconded it. Motion passed.

Art. 53(h) was then discussed.

Henry Skrabanek (130) made a motion to change Art. 53(h) from $150 per year to $250 per year. Ed Mazanec (66) seconded the motion.

Wilma Nesuda (25) felt the article would need to be reworded and that we should send it back to the By-Law Committee. By-Law Comm.

Chmn. Milan said this would not be necessary. Lillie Matejka (39) asked if the Assistant Youth Counselor gets any reimfbrursement. ByLaw. Comm. Chm. Milan said there was an article covering this. President Morris said the assistant is not paid unless the District Youth Counselor does not attend; then the assistant is paid. President Morris also said that Bro. Mazanec (66) may have been referring to money being given to the host lodge. Ed Mazanec (66) said that President Morris had misunderstood him and that he was talking about deferring the expenses of the district lodge officers.

Emil Matula (133) asked if directors are paid for district meetings.

Pres. Morris said they were, for mileage only; no per diem. Then Bro. Matula asked if sales representatives were paid for district meetings. The response was no.

Pres. Morris said that Youth Counselors are paid from the Supreme Lodge.

Louis Hanus ( ) asked if the

8 money appropriated in Art. 53(h) goes back to the district and not to the host lodge. By-Law Comm.

Chmn. Milan said yes.

Albert Banik (35) felt that any district office should be an office of prestige.

Lola Vavra (17) asked if the assistant youth counselor is paid out of the district fund. By-Law Comm. Chmn. Milan said this payment was covered in Art. 53(d).

Helen Oates (130) said we should stay on the subject and help the district officers by raising the amount of money to $250.

The motion to raise the district allocation from $150 per year to $250 per year was passed.

Hejny said no. A paramedical examination is a medical examination.

William Pavliska (107) asked if this article would include chiropractor or osteopath. The response was no.

David Ivicic (80) said that if sales representatives were to handle transfers, then this may come in conflict with the matter of soliciting transfers. Emil Matula (133) said there was too much discussion and that the president and secretary both had to sign the transfer. Mary Laznovsky (135) said a transfer would not be official until the president and secretary signed it. Chmn. Milan then announced that there would be no change in Art. 65(b).

By-Law Comm. Chmn. Milan read the letter to the convention body with proposed changes that were submitted by Bro. Hanus. This included that a social member may have the right of deliberation with approval of local lodge members.

Alvin Sefcik (173) felt that if the social members were willing to serve on a committee or to be a youth counselor, then they should have the right. Harry Schuhrnann (176) said his lodge was made up of social members and if it weren't for them, they would have no lodge.

Emil Matula (133) said we need social members. Hugo Kocian (178) said social members are an asset to a lodge. Emil Petr (84) said to leave Art. 72 as is and let the local lodge make their own appointments. Ben Jarma (84) said everyone agrees on the usefulness of social members and asked that we vote. Paul Hagar (84) agreed that social members should be allowed to serve. Charlie Matcek (81)

said let the local lodge make their cwn decisions.

By-Law Comm. Chmn. Milan said he was worried about letting social members vote or hold office. Annie Dusek (177) said there might be some conflict with this article and Art. 107(b). Louis Hanus (88) made the motion to change this article.

By-Law Comm. Chmn. Milan said he would read the article as it was proposed. The vote was postponed until after the Miss SPJST Talent Contest.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 a.m. for break until 10:50.

Bro. Silas Smith, our State Field Manager, came to help our district. We had a class at Floresville Aug. 16th. Then Aug. 17th, a class was held in Corpus Christi. I certainly do want to thank the ladies of Corpus Christi and Robstown for their fine hospitality. They served us all home-baked goodies, sandwiches and refreshments, after class. We also had several visitors at both classes.

Aug. 18th we went to Harlingen and Rio Hondo. At Rio Hondo we now have Bro. Louis Krupala as a new sales representative and I gave him a lesson on insurance while there. We met his parents, too, and they are very interested in the progress of their lodge. Best of luck.

We went to Harlingen to help with insurance there, but we didn't find Sister Gardena Kristof at home. Later I called and contacted her. Brother Silas and I talked to her and offered our help. Good luck to you Sister Kristof.

We 'all wish Sister Jeanette Smith a speedy recovery. We miss you, Jeanette. Jeanette certainly does help a lot at our classes.

It is still very dry here and we need rain badly. The crops are going to shrink if it doesn't rain soon.

I am looking forward to my trip to Temple in September to the seminar.

Dear Members and Readers: Once again, lodge members and their guests were joined in fraternal brotherhood at our annual Homecoming Day activities at Lodge 88. No long lines, typical of the occasion in years past, were witnessed by those desirous of the savory barbecue beef dinner and fixins adorning the food tables.

After dinner, most members were able to relax to the music of the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra conducted by Mr. Rudolph Dybala before engaging in planned social activities.

The: day concluded with dance music by Dan Pa.vlas and the Boys under the glow from the ballroom's crystal chandelier.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: This letter will be comparatively short for as most of you remember, I've been out of town for a week. I think it will take me a week to catch up with everything.

My mother and I went to visit my Aunt Ula Bailey in Matagorda and she sends her regards to all of you. My mom and I both had a great time. We caught a few fish, crabs, and a sunburn. But this short letter will give me a chance to get caught up on some backlogged things.

Wednesday, September 8, 1976 John and Talita Ailsher became grandparents again June 4th.

James Gregory is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Lyons. This made Mr. and Mrs. Squatty Lyons grandparents again. Congratulations to both sets of grandparents and to the proud parents. Who knows, maybe in about six years we will have a new youth club member.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Louise Chudej for working in my place with the Birthday Club Sisters this month.

I'm afraid with school starting last week that my free time is limited.

We say good-bye to Dick and Anna Marie Joiner who have been transferred to Denver, Colorado.

We hope they enjoy their stay in Denver and come back to visit us often.

Dear Members and Friends: Here is a brief summary of our August meeting. The meeting was called to order by President Alvin J. Sefcik. The pledge of allegiance to the flag was recited by the membership. Roll call of officers revealed all to be present.

Following a motion and second, the reading of the minutes were dispensed with until the next meeting. President Sefcik extended a warm welcome to the many guests present.

All reports were deferred to the September meeting. Report on the sick revealed that Randy Kivch, one of our youth members, is confined to the hospital; his father, Brother Jack Kivch is also sick.

Others on the sick list included Sisters Josephine Vlastelica and Agnes Valusek and Brother Victor Holubec's mother who is in the hospital. We hope they feel better soon.

President Sefcik at this point congratulated Sister Emilie Portacci on receiving her 50-year pin.

He also presented a plaque to Sister Mary Cordray for the fine work she has done as secretary of this lodge. Sister Cordray expressed her deep appreciation for the plaque and extended her congratulations to the new secretary.

Initiation of members include!d Brother Willie and Sister Mary Lou Huepers, Brother Jerry and Sister Audrey Kaluza„ Brother Joseph Polivka, Brother Victor Holubec, and Sister Frances O'Kelley. Sister Kaluza thanked her committee, who worked on making the Mexican dinner that we had at this meeting, a great success.

President Sefcik also thanked the musicians who played throughout the whole evening.

STATE YAD HAS WINNERS FROM ALL DISTRICTS

by Maxine Sefeik Over 200 boys and girls assembled Sunday, Aug. 29th, at Temple High School Auditorium for their final competition in talent, arts and crafts, ranging in ages from 6 through 17.

State Youth Director Dorothy Massey welcomed the assembly and following her opening remarks, she introduced State King Stephen Parrish from Crockett, who served as Master of Ceremonies.

Miss SPJST Mary Cavanaugh from Granger was among the young people recognized and it was nice to have her present to give the youngsters a big boost.

Promptly at 12:45 p.m., a group of Czech Beseda dancers from Lodge 84, Dallas, opened the afternoon's competition in their neat and colorful costumes. (A part of this group danced during the recent SPJST Convention Youth Spectacular night in Waco.)

Meanwhile, during the talent competition performance, the impartial craft judges were occupied examining entries in the craft section, where a large number of items were beautifully displayed and carefully judged in Home Art, Pictorial Arts, Science/Educational, Constructed Items, Hobby Kits, Handicraft, including Foods where the judges enjoyed sampling rich formulas very much.

In the Individual and Group Talents, there were selections consisting of solo/duet singing, tap/ballet and other dancing, solo/duet instrumentals, twirling, plus recitation. Incidently, some of the dancing routines were choreographed by the respective club members. Also several numbers were a salute arrangement to our nation's 200th anniversary.

After talent performances came time for all entrants to assemble on stage in their glittering and colorful costumes, to hear the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place results announced. To the left of the stage was a huge array of sparkling trophies

as well as plaques displayed for the first place achievers to take home and cherish for a long time.

Presentation of awards went quickly to numerous participants in the four age categories by Sister Massey on behalf of the SPJST Society.

Then came the highlight portion of the program 'before the closing of State Youth Achievement Day. President Morris for the Home Office announced and presented the SPJST Scholarship of $500 to recipient Doug Uptmor of Kim Mott, a member of Cottonwood Lodge 6.

Doug is the son of Brother and Sister Aubrey Uptmor, also of Lodge 6 and both parents are very active in the lodge; Sister Uptmor is assistant youth leader.

To my recollection never before has any lodge achieved so many honors in various categories at the state level as Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood has, with 17 first places. Indeed, this is a tremendous and outstanding record for our Cottonwood members to be extremely proud of and cherish for a long time.

On behalf of West Lodge 54 Youth Club and the parent lodge, I wish to convey our congratulations to the neighboring sister lodge to their large number of state winners, especially on the point system presentation; most of us youth leaders realize and believe that it's work, work, work, and more work to achieve over 6,000 points in 12 months. Good for Lodge 6! Those of you who wonder how it can be done, any leader or youth can get busy and earn points on all planned SPJST activities and perhaps you may be Number One next year. If you haven't started accumulating points, then you still have 81/2 months to keep working for that particular goal.

The ten-top youth members and youth leaders was another accomplishment. This category also includes loads of hard work, sleepless nights, and irregular family communications. Yes, these achievements involve full-time participation to fulfill set obligations.

The ladies from Cottonwood, Waco, Snook, Dallas, Seaton, Talton, Elk, Hallettsville, Floresville, Academy, and Lovelady lodges, indeed deserve everyone's respect for their consistent and unselfish leadership; without these leaders, the respec-

tive clubs would be dormant. Congratulations to all of them!

According to the tabulation committee and the presentation of awards, we were fortunate to have all present winners assembled in their proper places for the pictures to be released for the official publication.

Those of you who undertook and fulfilled their assignment deserve a salute because this annual affair is a huge undertaking which involves a lot of territory, which could not have been fulfilled by a handful of people, theretfore I must mention in my concluding remarks that each one of us deserve recognition, regardless if your assignment was on a large or small scale; it's the very active members who keep the' SPJST youth activities in force and in the spotlight, especially to the general public.

Now something from the personal standpoint. While I witnessed each talent performance, I observed with much interest that a lot of practice was put into your presentation to be able to perform your very best to endeavor 1st place achievement; everyone' could not score in the top position, so those of you who placed in lower scores were great troopers.

Congratulations to all State YAD entrants! Keep up your enthusiasm!

Fraternally, Mrs. Dorothy Chervenka SPJST — LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Brothers and Sisters: The softball team players enjoyed a fishing trip to Lake Texoma at Old Mill Creek Resort Lodge this past weekend, Aug. 27-29. A total of 16 members made the trip and the six guys who didn't show up really missed a good time. Although we fished a lot, very few fish were caught but it was still fun trying. I sure wish we could have had everyone attending just one time because this gives us a good chance to visit together, fish, eat, play horseshoes, cards, and games.

Next on the agenda is the annual steak dinner and awards banquet, which will be Sunday, Sept 19th at 4 p.m. at the spacious backyard of Ida and Lionel Schulz's residence.

This will be the highlight of the season for the team.

Sunday, Sept. 12th, our mother Lodge No. 84 will hold its annual bazaar at the lodge location, 2625 Floyd Street. The team is again in charge of the cakes-pastries-sweets booth. We are asking, all of the players' wives to please bake some pastry and/or cake for the booth; also we are asking all the fine sisters of Lodge 84 to bake something for our booth because many cakes will be needed for the cake walk.

Your donations will be deeply appreciated.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Rogers, Texas Sept. 2, 1976 Dear Brother Sefcik: On page 12 of the August 18 issue of the Vestnik, Brother Silas Smith questioned the validity (and possibly the intent) of my previously printed and reprinted statement

Although there may not appear to be any direct connection between nationality and the legal status of our fraternal order, as Brother Smith stated in his letter, I do feel that there is an indirect connection which has and will continue to be of considerable importance to our SPJST. Basically, it has to do with (1) a statechartered organization living up to its purposes, and (2) the definition and description of a fraternal society.

Reading my entire article in the Convention issue of Vestnik will disclose that, at the referenced point, I was suggesting to our delegates some actions they might take at the convention. Since the insurance and fraternal work of the SPJST appeared to be in such good order, I urged the delegates to more actively pursue the secondly stated (in the Preamble) purpose, namely "To endeavor to keep alive the' cherished traditions, customs and language of our forefathers."

While this may be viewed as a moral obligation to our founding fathers and not of direct importance in carrying out the insurance and other fraternal functions of the SPJST, I believe the active pursuit of all the purposes in our charter is important. Failure to do so could make us more vulnerable to the almost certain future attacks on the preferred status of fraternal orders in Texas.

Most definitions and descriptions of a fraternal society state that the members of the society have a common interest which unites them; that is a common bond. Our Czech heritage and our exhibition of continued interest in that Czech heritage serves or should be serving as our common bond. It is one of the things that helps to hold us together and to distinguish us from a group of stock insurance company policy

14 holders.

My basis for the use of the term "common bond" comes from the following references in the Fraternal Sales Training Program, Volume 1, Basic Course, published in 1952 by the Fraternal Field Managers' Association of Chicago, Ill. This book has been used by the SPJST in training its organizers.

In discussing the early English fraternal societies known as the Guilds, the book states, "The Guilds set a pattern that is followed by the fraternal societies of today.

Those societies were organized as groups with interests in common."

(Page E).

The authors continued with the statement, "They had their being because the masses of the workers and trades people found in them a means whereby those with a common interest could organize for social and friendly purposes for the common good." (Pages G and H) In describing the classifications of membership in fraternal societies, the publication states: "The membership of the societies composing the fraternal insurance system falls into four natural groups: 1) The nationality or racial group, wherein all applicants for membership must be of a certain national or racial birth or descent.

2) The labor group, wherein only persons of a certain vocation or those of a certain employer are eligible for membership.

3) The denominational group, wherein all members must belong to a certain religious group.

4) The general group, wherein the members may be qualified from the population generally.

Roughly speaking, about half of the fraternal societies in the United States and Canada belong to the nationality group, followed by the general group and the denominational group, with the labor group having the fewest societies." (Page .1).

In discussing the influences of the lodges, the book states, "There can be no argument that the individual lodges spread over the country constitute a tremendous socializing force, bringing bodies of persons together for association in some mutual and common interest.

They wield a powerful influence in spreading the ideals of benevolence, religion, patritotism, and

VISTNIIC education." (Page 3) The article also explains that when the' National Fraternal Congress was organized in 1886, "One of the first major problems that engaged the' attention of the Congress was that of legislation. Laws unfriendly to the societies were being passed in certain of the states and some of the commissioners were imposing unfair restrictions.

The Congress undertook to offset this situation, and was successful."

(Pages F and G) This opposition to the fraternals

has continued to this day and it may be expected to continue in the future.

In an early following issue of the Vestnik, I will have comments relating to the current discussions about (1) use of the Czech and English languages in the SPJST, and (2) the compatibility of Czech heritage promotion and the considerable non-Czech speaking membership of the SPJST. VRAZEL'S POLKA BAND PLAYS IN WASHINGTON, D.C. — Band members, L to R, are: Alfred Vrazel, saxophone; Albert Hesehneyer, bass; George Strmiska, saxophone; Thomas Strmiska, drums; Patrick Strmiska, guitar, and Anton Vrazel, accordion.

Vrazels' Polka Band from Buckholts recently performed at the "Festival of American Folklife" in Washington, D.C., representing Czech polka music.

The band was invited by the Smithsonian Institution, sponsors of the festival, who also paid for the band's trip to Washington. The Vrazel's Polka Band was recommended to the Smithsonian Institution by Svatava Jakobson, Czech professor at the University of Texas. They and their instruments were transported to and from Washington by jet airplane.

The Vrazels performed twice a day for five days, July 14-18, with each performance lasting about an hour. The crowds were good and the band was very pleased at ale reaction of the crowd to their music.

Vrazel's Polka Band was organized by Alfred and Anton Vrazel over 20 years ago and since that time has become one of the most popular polka bands in Texas.

They are well received and respected wherever they perform.

The band has produced 10 albums, 18 singles and has a weekly

Sunday polka program on Radio Station KMIL, Cameron, since 1955, of which. Alfred Vrazel is the host.

The majority of the band's bookings are at SPJST falls.

Members of the band are: Anton and Alfred Vrazel, of Buck. bolts, George, Patrick and Thomas Strmiska of Granger, and Albert Heselmeyer of Taylor.

Alfred and Anton Vrazel are members of Lodge 15, Buckholts, and Albert Heselmeyer is a member of Lodge 29, Taylor.

COLLEGE San Jacinto Community College in Pasadena will continue to teach an evening Czech language course during the fall semester. W. E. Souchek will teach the class of beginner and advanced students.

Registration and class will begin Sept. 20th and continue for ten weeks. Class will be held every Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Last spring 31 students attended the classes. We learned to carry on simple conversation and to read

and comprehend short paragraphs in Czech. We read Czech poems and sang Czech songs. At the end of the spring course we traveled to Alvin Junior College for a Czech food and fun social. The Alvin Czechs were excellent hosts and we had a very enjoyable evening.

W. E. Souchek, the instructor, has made a trip to Czechoslovakia and showed colored slides to the class. We loved the slides and all of a sudden realized we are part of that rich heritage and should be very proud. Let us work to preserve the Czech culture, so that it may enrich our total American culture.

Now we are looking forward to seeing our classmates from last spring. Also, we invite young and old to come join us, you won't regret it. We learned well and laughed a great deal. CZECH CLASSES AT TEMPLE JUNIOR COLLEGE Czech 1712, Beginners Czech I, and Czech 1732, Beginners Czech III, are being taught at Temple Junior College each Tuesday night from 7 to 9:50 p.m.

These courses include Czech cultural heritage studies as well as conversation, reading, writing, and dialect studies of the Czech language.

Cost of each course is approximately $30 dollars per semester.

Although registration continued until Sept. 8th.

Instructor for the course is James W. Mendl, Jr., of Bryan and Austin. He received his BA degree in Czech from Texas A&M University and his MA degree in Slavic Languages and Literature from the University of Texas in Austin.

Mr. Mendl has taught Czech previously at El Campo High School, Hill Junior College, Temple Junior College (Taylor Extension Center), and The University of Texas at Austin.

From The State Youth Director RE-CAP OF STATE YAD It was rewarding again to see so many interested participants attending the 1976 State Youth Achievement Day, Aug. 29th It is always good to see so many youth and families attending these special occasions for our young people. The quality and wide variety of craft items are getting more competitive each year and it is evident that the youth and parents are trying to think up new ideas to enter each year. The display in craft was laden with interesting items.

The talent was beautiful and the competition gets harder each year for the contestants and judges. I was sorry the activities were a little late in starting, but we had to wait on a talent judge and we couldn't start the competition until we had all the judges present.

Congratulations go to Lodge 6, Cottonwood for having the "big" winners in this year's State YAD. They earned the first place Junior, Teenager, Youth Club, Youth

Leader, and Scholarship awards.

Even though this youth club is not one of the largest in the state, so far as number of active youth are concerned, they are the largest when it comes to activities. Much credit must go to the youth leader, Willie Mae Schuetz, and her assistant, Rose Uptmor, for planning projects and activities that interest the youth. their support and encouragement of the active youth program that they consistently have.

I would like to thank all the people who had a part in making this State YAD the success that it was. It takes many people all working together to keep things running smoothly and everyone assigned to a job certainly did their best. There were several LIT's assigned to some of the positions again this year and they worked like professionals at their assigned tasks. Everyone who worked did an excellent job and that is the reason everything went smoothly and we finished about on time, as scheduled. Many thanks to all of you who helped in any way.

It is our goal that each State Youth Achievement Day be bigger and better each year. We are continually striving for our young people to have higher standards and worthwhile goals to work toward, and with the interested parents, youth leaders and everyone concerned with the youth in our Society, I am sure that our Youth Program will continue to grow.

Sept. 25th, at Lodge 177, Academy, will be the beautiful Royalty competition. I hope this special event will be well attended. It is the grand finale of our youth year and the membership of that lodge is really going all out to make your visit there enjoyable. From The District Youth Counselors DISTRICT II The youth activities will now slow down because the children have all started back to school and will have to get their minds on making good grades in school.

The State YAD is over and I would like to congratulate all winners and especially those from District IL The only thing we have remaining is our State Royalty which will be at Lodge 171, Academy, Saturday, Sept. 25th. We hope many of you will make it to this event.

On my camp report I failed to mention that Brother Nick Morris, our SL President, came to visit with us Friday afternoon and observed all the activities that were going on. He stayed for the party that night which was presented by the teenagers. He spent the night with us and seemed to enjoy himself almost as much as the youngsters.

Thank you Brother Morris for visiting with us at camp.

Sunday, August 22nd, I attended the annual get-together at Lodge 155, Austin. This was held at the beautiful surroundings of Lake Austin at Apache Shores Resort.

The members of Lodge No. 155 seemed to enjoy this afternoon of fellowship. This get-together was fairly well attended. The youth and several adults went swimming and some of the youth got out for an hour or so to eat and went back into the pool. Youth Leader Sister Dale Jezisek was present also, as well as her Assistant Gloria Ebner and many of the youth members.

There were four new members: Clarabell Schunek and her daughters, Billye, Cindy, and Jean, and several visitors attending. The three Schunek girls plan to join Lodge 155 Youth Club.

The officers of Lodge 155 should be complimented for putting on this get-together for all their members. I believe this is a very good way to get some of the other members interested and taking part in

Dear Members and Friends: It has been such a busy summer with so many SPJST activities.

Now it is time to go back to school with lessons, ball games, and seeing friends again.

Lodge 47 started the summer with a trip to Six Flags on June 5th. Then came the 22nd SPJST Convention in which some of our youth and myself participated in the Convention Chorus on the night of the banquet.

The month of July was spent getting our lodge ready for its Bicentennial Celebration. Most of the ycuth participated in many activities and worked long hours improving our grounds, getting 'booths ready, stringing permanent outdoor wiring, cleaning, and then running booths the day of the celebration. The Folk Dancers performed during the program presented inside the building celebrating our nation's bicentennial year. They did a beautiful job and I am so very proud of them, but it was also sad for this was their last performance as this particular group. Those who first started with the group feel that they are getting too old and too tall for some of the younger members and want to drop out. We have performed

After all the fun came the work of cleaning in which the youth again took part.

Thirty-two of our youth, six leaders and chaperones from Lodge 47 attended District II Camp at Val

Verde. We had a very enjoyable time. Thanks to the planning of our DYC Frank Klinkovsky. Adults attending from Lodge 47 were Howard and Jerry Stefka, Delores Skrabanek, Clarence Sodek, and Jimmy and Caralou Allen.

The first weekend in August found us at Lodge 74 in Lovelady for District II's fall meeting. Rudy Hafner and his lodge members

made everyone feel tremendously welcome. Many of us attended the Saturday night dance and spent the night in Crockett. After the dance Saturday night, Lodge 47 youth and parents could be found swimming in the pool at King's Inn in Crockett. Swimming at 2 o'clock in the morning is great fun!

Friday, August 14th was our annual fund-raising for the youth club. I wish to thank you club members who worked and participated in the activities. Special thanks to all of you parents of club members who donated cakes and game prizes. I was very proud of our club at District II YAD. Many of our club members placed in the arts and crafts, including talent contests.

I was so very pleased and proud of our club being No. 1 in District II. Whenever I became youth leader, I told my family that by goal was to be able to place the Seaton club in the Top Ten Youth Clubs of the Year. All of you are trying very hard to make that goal come true.

I think that our king and queen and duke and duchess represented our lodge beautifully. Our king, Jerry May, with his duke, Vincent Schiller, placed second runner-up.

Our lovely queen, Katherine Morris, and her duchess, Marile Allen, placed first runner-up. They will be trying for a win next year.

LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE Dear Readers, Now that State YAD is over every youth club is back to normal, hopefully. We had a successful trip to Temple.

Mark Bel/0k placed first in Constructed Items; Kim Drozd placed second in Hobby Kitt, both in the 10-12 group, while Melissa Holy placed third in Home Arts (6-9).

We wish to express how proud we the youth club and youth leaders are of all of you. To Arlene Zak and Annie Zabransky, we express our thanks for representing us at State YAD, in Craft and Talent.

Thanks to everyone who helped us receive a plaque at state for being one of the top, ten youth clubs in the state.

Wednesday, September 8, 1976 LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY August 13th we had a very good meeting. We have seven new members: Milton, Sally, Ronald and Pat Klepae, Oscar Roberts, Margie Roberts and Terry Tyroch. We are glad to have these members and already they have attended all our social meetings, also some have worked selling popcorn.

We had a back-to-school swimming party plus an eatout at McDonald's. The club paid the way in swimming and gave each youth $2 to spend at McDonald's. Everyone enjoyed this outing very much.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY August 13th the youth club went swimming. After swimming we went to McDonald's to eat hamburgers.

We had a good attendance of our members as well as several guests.

We had lots of fun swimming and then went to the park area for refreshments. At this time we discuSsed having a skating party next month.

SPJST — LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Members, I attended State YAD in Temple August 29th and saw a nice program that was put on by boys and girls from all over the state. There were a lot of winners who earned a trophy, ribbon and an entry prize.

We held our youth club meeting Sept. 1st at the lodge and we also held a monthly social.

I entered the bicycle contest during Westfest activities Sept. 4th, and there were a lot of youngsters participating in the 10-12 age group. It was fun and I hope to enter again next year.

Fraternally, Edwin Sefcik (9-2-76) Historian - SPJST — LODGE NO. 30, TAITON SPJST State YAD was held Sunday, Aug. 29th at Temple High School. Youth from all over the state participated in the various talent, craft, and point system contests.

Some participantS went home with 1st place trophies; some went home with 2nd and 3rd place ribbons; also some came home with point and merit system plaques; but everyone who participated went home with a remembrance of that day, with a $5 participation prize.

Lodge 30, Talton came home with a few winnings: Senior Group Talent won ist place with a dance routine, "Columbus Stockade Blues." Participants were: Donna Bialia, Clare Dorotik, Roxanne Yockey, Rosann Dorotik, Yvonne Krpec, Diane Dluhos, Veronica Hajovsky and Lisa Priesmeyer; Lisa 'Prieismeyer (10-14) won 3rd in Individual Talent, playing a piano solo; Jerome Dorotik, Jr. (13-14) received 1st place in Pictorial Art and 3rd place in Hobby Kits, and Karen Kahanek (10-12) won 2nd in Pictorial Art. Many people should be thanked for making this day possible. Our State Youth Director, Mrs. Dorothy Massey, put a lot of time and effort into this day. The district youth counselors did their share to help out with everything. Many others helped with the tabulating of the scores, organizing of the

craft and talent entries, and working with the stage and music. The judges had a very hard task of judging the talent and craft entries. Mr. Nick Morris, and Mr. Rudy Sefcik also helped out with things. MC Stephen Parrish had a very difficult job but handled it beautifully. Thanks to all these people!

State YAD was possible this year and was a success.

We held the patriotic part of the meeting before we went into the' regular business portion.

We elected Jackie Zahirniak Member of the Month at the meeting.

There were three entrants from the club whose crafts were displayed at the state finals; Laurie Zahirniak placed 3rd in Foods on her Italian cake.

A motion was made for our club to dissolve the booth sales setup planned for Westfest. Motion seconded and passed.

The youth club selected a charity donation to the West High School Varsity Club during the football season.

Chris Baler was elected as our new reporter.

Jackie Zahirniak, Chris Baler and Helaine Wernet were door prize winners.

Oct. 2nd was set for our next meeting date. The meeting adjourned at 8 p.m.

17tSTNiK 1 (8-oz) can crushed pineapple 2 medium or 3 small bananas 1 cup chopped nuts

LODGE NO. 174, ROCKDALE Dear Readers, I would like to thank Mrs. Massey and all of her helpers for making State YAD such a wonderful day.

Thanks to the judges for giving me 2nd place on my Hummingbird Cake. Some people asked me for the recipe and here it is: Hummingbird Cake 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. soda 1 tsp, salt 1 tsp. cinnamon 2 cups sugar 1 1/2 cup vegetable oil 3 eggs 1 tsp. butter flavoring

Mix the first & ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Add undrained pineapple (I save 2 tbs. of juice for icing.) Mix only by hand. Add chopped bananas and nuts. Mix again. Bake in greased-floured Bundt pan in 350-degree oven for 1 hour and 5 minutes. Let cool in pan for 1 hour before removing.

I iced it with 1 cup powder sugar, 2 tsp. pineapple juice (which I saved) and 1/2 tsp. vanilla. Good eating!

Dopsala jsem ji a obdr gela jsem dopis, ale byl od Sestry Rufiny, kterou jsme rovneg znali a ktera ueila v Ennis.

Psala, ze Sestra Faust i na je nyni nemocno, nebot' je ji ji g 89 let a musi bYt v koleekove zidli. Sestte Rufine jest ji g 91 let a psala, jmeno Houdek je ji povedome, a ge obe vzpominaji east°, na Ennis.

Prosila me, abych ras jim nekdy napsala par tadkil, a to jsem si vzpomnela, jak by to bylo hezke, kdyby ti co tyto Sestry znali anebo byli gaky Sestry Rufin y aby jim zaslali listek. Toto by je jiste potegi-

Vzpominara za, jakjrch okolnosti jsern byl Adasten prvni svatby na Morave roku 1894, kdyt se vdavala moje prvni sestrenice z otcovy stra ny .0tec mel jen jednoho bratra starsiho Franti:ska a jen jednu sest ru Annu, ktera take byla stark a mela jen jednoho syna a take jen jednu dceru Anidku, ktera se i menovala Anna Smahelova a bkvala se svjrmi road a bratrem Janem doma v sousedni obci v Kunovicich. Moji rodide odjeli z domu rano, aby byli ptitomni svatebnim obkadum, ktere se konaly v katolickern kostele v sousedni obci Loudka. Svatebdane melt obed v dome nevesty. Kdy vtak moji rodide se nevraceli domil od rana a ut bylo pozde odpoledne, tak stark bratr Josef dostal napad ,kterg uskutednil. On znal rtechny cesty a chodniky do vtech okolnich obci, tak vybral ten nejltratti chodnik do Kunovic ,pfes pole, kterk nas vyvedl na cestu, jent vedla z Kunovic do Loudky. Zde asi v po'ovine cesty jsme potkali svatebni prfivod, kterjr se ubiral k novemu domovu novomantela do obce Podoll. Bylo to nemile pfekvapeni pro nage rodide, uvidet nas ye, ale vzali nos do vozu, kterk byl take okratlen rfiznobarevnjani papirovjani pentlemi.

V obci Podoli bylo pokradovani svatby v hospode a tam se mohli svatebdane i vytandit. Ja a bratr Josef byli jsme oba hladovi, tak se nam dostalo dost 8lbytlal, ze jsme mohli zahnat hlad a byli jsme paslant do na:geho vozu se vyspat.

Kdy jsme dojeli domil, to nevim.

Ty starodavne zvyky mezi nadinci se i zde jette dodduji. Od to doby byl jsem na mnoha svatbach zudastnen, na riankch mistech a vide). jsem mnoho svatebnich obfad* a •hostin. Posledni svatba, kte re jsem byl zirdastnen se pokaciala

Vgtetek z tit() oslavy pujde na indianske stfedisko a jejch pomocne akce. Zde v Dallas mime asi 17 tisic osob inctianske krve a velke procento jich je zde zamestnane.

Nedivno mel pan Jim Pavelka z Ennis tadost o dye pisne "Spi HaVlidku" a "Hranice vzplala" a tu prvni mu limed zaslal i s notami pan W. Barton zde z Dallas a pak obdriel jette nekolik kopii to pisne odjinud. Ta druhe dala trochu pace ale pi. Mary Latova z Ennis dopsala na nekolik mist a obdrie la take nekolik otisku to druhe pisne. Pan Pavelka je velmi vdeden krajanum ktefi se dbetovali a zaslail 2aciane a vitt si laskavosti ftech. Je tedy videt, ze ptece nekdo (Re tu deskou east, tfebate je ji nyni velmi malo. Obed bude po(than v put dvanacte a kolide budou na prodej hned v deset hodin rano. Hudba bude irdinkovat od 3 do 10 veder a venku bude tet bava v tak zvane Bavarian Garden. Kdo ma narodni kroj tak si jej ma obleknout a ptijit.

v sobotu odpoledne dne 17. dervence 1976 v hotelu Hilton Holiday. Je to jeden z tech nejnovejtich modernich hotel0 zde postavenkch, ktere jsou zatizeny pro vtechny ptipady.

Mirj tfeti vnuk Larry Stata vstou pil do stavu mantelskeho se slednou Sharon Kremer a jeji rodide ji vypravdi dirstojnou stvatbu a hostinu, v jedne pronajate mistnosti. Hudba vyhravala pro pobaveni ,ale netandilo se. Velka zasoba zakuskti a studenkch napoju a sampauske i michane napoje neschazely. Dva sluhove melt na starosti obsluhu. Na jidelnim listku neschazel ani kaviar. Ze vtech ze,kuskir nejdkive zmizely dobre presbecinky. Byly podobne tem, jake delavali Pokladnikovi v Dallas a u Nemedk0 ye West. Netrvalo dlouho a vtichni jsme byli jako jedna rodi21a. Ptibkva nas do rodiny, ktera cite 31 osob. Novomantelfrm vyslovuji srdedne diky za pozvani a pre ji jim, aby byli spolu At'astni na spoledne draze tivotni.

Aby ten milj vdovskjr stay nebyl tak jednotvarng, byl jsem vybidnut synem (mam jen jednoho, John ny), abych se k nim pfipojil, vt:chni dostali prazdniny na deset dni a pojedou na to jejich letovitte k Austinu, kde mail new dodelavat.

V sobotu odpoledne 24. dervence pkijela rodina Johnnyho, mantelka Elsie a syn Dennis a vzali mire s sebou. Pkenocoval jsem s n'ini a na druhk den mne odvezli k Hubr0m.

Dfive, net jsme jell k HubrOm, tak mne povozili ye statnim parku, pH Bastrop. Bylo videt, jak tam misty fadila vichFce v sobotu pled noci. Je take zajimave videt, jak ty cesty jsou v parku upravene. Hodne srazngeh kopeil a klikate cesty vroubene kefi a stromy rfizneho druhu. Vtechny cesty jsou oznadeny disli a varovanim, te se tam nesmi stfilet a potkozovat majetek.

Blitilo se k polednimu. tak jsme zajeli do mesta Bastrop, kde jsme uspokoj4 li nate ' aludky v jidelne, ktera je zakizena i pro samoobsluhu. Odpoledne vnuk Dennis mne zavezl k Hubriun, kteti bgvaji na druhe strane mesta Austin. Dcera Lilka prave pfed natim pfijezdem dojela domit z Temple z nemocnice "King D aughte r s". ye ktere je umisten jeji 'khan John Huber z Troy, ktereho odekavala v pondeli

Je to krasnk pobyt v pfirode, aveak teplota, ktera tam ukazovala blizkost 100 stupfifi, nezpfijemilovala moc ony prozdniny.

Jezero poskytovalo chiazeni pro ty mladel, pro mne 'veak bylo moc hhibcgre.

Mne zajimala mlaci& dernoeka, jak rychle na poeitacim stroji vyklepala ii6et Mrkla na podnos a v tom okamtiku listek mel jsem v ruce; dostal pokyn, ze mohu jit a udelat misto daleimu za mnou.
