FROM THE EDIIOR't, bESK We wish to call your attention to the announcement in this issue about the chartering of Lodge No. 179, Warrenton, Sunday, September 12th. The program in full appears on page 12 of this issue and we hope to help them launch their lodge to a successful future, Everyone should be rested up after the Labor Day weekend and will probably want to go to the dedication of another new lodge in our SPJST Society. Check the program and try to be present to give our new lodge a boost!

Here we, once again, encourage all of our correspondents to please try to send their letters, etc., at least two days earlier! Remember that the print for the Vestnik is set and ready to go at the end of the day, Friday. We know that to many of you it seems that if you send something on a Thursday, it has time to be in print by next Wednesday's Vestnik. That is not the case; if we get some correspondence on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, it is automatically held for the next issue one week later.

PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND! 'The official deadline is Thursday, as is stated in the second column of page 2, however, we do try to print urgent material that arrives Friday morning if time and space permit. We regret not being able to print something but If it is too late and out of date it is

Your editor is working as much as possible with the Westfest group because they wish to give the occasion as much of the friendly West and Czech flavor as possible.

Everyone knows how friendly all of the people in West are, so come out and enjoy your Labor Day weekend in safety and fun plus fellowship. Radio Station KHBR will broadcast from West Sunday, the 5th, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. You will surely want to see the Czech Texans in Review at 6 p.m. — All at Westfest.

It's so nice to see all of the Czech costumes blossoming out all over our fair city! Sister Sue Pescaia, our publisher's wife and president of Westfest, asked me to invite all of our readers to come out and have an enjoyable time.

First, let me say, there would be no SPJST if it were not for the sales representatives. How many delegates to the convention would you have had if not for the sales representatives?

These dedicated brothers and sisters are the ones who go out and sell the benefits of our Society. Sure our benefits are explained at our local lodge meetings, and in the Vestnik, but the sales representatives are the ones who get it to the public.

This takes a special person; one who believes in what he or she is doing. If not, they could not sell, because insurance is not the easiest thing to sell. Prospects cannot see it, or hold it in their hand. Our sales representatives are part-time salesmen, and are not trained like the commercial salesmen, but they do an excellent job, and I am very proud of every one of them.

All of our lodges have good officers and some faithful members who do the work, and try to keep things going, but the lodges that are growing are the lodges that have good sales representatives; the others are dying a slow death.

This is the point: your lodges are as good as your sales representatives. So, help them and you will be helping your lodge. Do not criticize your sales representatives, at least they are trying.

To you sales representatives, do not get angry at your fellow sales representatives if they write up someone you have talked to. A prospect is only that ... a prospect until he signs on the dotted line.

Every time you get a chance, tell those sales representatives that they are doing a good job. It doesn't cost anything and they will appreciate it. Everyone likes to be complimented on the job they are doing. Our sales representatives are the backbone of our Society, without them there would be no youth for future growth of our Society.

Brother and sister sales representatives, keep up the good work as you have in the past. I am always available and happy to help you in any way that I can, because I too believe!

4 PROCEEDINGS OF THE XXIInd CONVENTION HELD IN WACO, TEXAS, JUNE 14-17, 1976 (Monday afternoon, June 14, 1976) The meeting reassembled at 3:45 p.m. after the afternoon break.

Chinn. Pokladnik asked Emil Petr (84) to clarify his motion regarding the Youth Comm. Emil Petr stated that the committee would function only during this convention and would not be a standing committee. Lillie Matejka (39), who seconded the motion for the committee, acknowledged that this was correct.

George Kacir (54) chairman of the committee on order during the 'convention, made the following recommendations: a) morning sessions shall begin at 8:30 each morning and the convention will continue until 5:30 each afternoon, with 15-minute intermissions at about 10:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and a lunch break from 12 noon til 1:30 p.m. b) No delegate shall speak to a motion or an issue more than once, and not more than 4 minutes, except that a proponent of a motion may have a 3-minute rebuttal.

Extensions of time may be granted only with a permission of the majority of the delegates present. c) All other matters shall be governed by the by-laws and Roberts Rules of Order.

The other members of the committee are: Albert Kubala (92) and Ruby L Bolton (47). Chmn.

Poldadnik asked that this go into effect tomorrow morning rather than this afternoon because of the bus schedule set up for this evening's activities. This was agreed to by all.

Silas Smith, State Field Manager, complimented all the sales representatives on the fine job they have been doing.

Frances Olexa (88) asked for a clarification of the duties of the new Youth Committee. It was explained by President Morris that they would meet at various times during the convention to discuss the youth program and hopefully make suggestions for improvement.

Jerry Prochazka (65), chairman of the Salaries & Donations Committee, asked his committee to meet with him at 5 p.m. in the lobby.

Chmn. Sid Pokladnik called State Youth Director Dorothy Massey to the microphone. She thanked the convention for their consideration of the Youth Department and their support and urged everyone to attend the Youth Spectacular on Tuesday evening and the Miss SPJST contest Wednesday night. She introduced the seven district youth directors: District 1 -- Lola Vavra, (17) 2 — Fr. Chmn. Pokladnik announced that this is Credentials Chmn. Darlene Engelke's birthday, and he wished her and anyone else who is having a birthday a happy birthday.

It was announced that the Grievance Comm. would meet at the Information Desk Tuesday morning at 8 o'clock and the Insurance Committee would meet at 7:30 a.m.

The meeting rooms would be assigned later.

Carl Zich (92) asked for a correction of the minutes. It was decided by the convention in general that the minutes would not be read, but that corrections would be taken from the floor. President Nick Morris made the necessary corrections to the list of greetings that were read at the morning session.

Chmn. Pokladnik announced that if anyone wished to have pictures that were being taken by Glenn Psencik (24) at the convention, he could write to Glenn at 1210 North Main, Temple, Tx 76501.

Editor Rudy Sefcik brought extra copies of the convention issue of the Vestnik for those who needed additional copies.

It was announced that the Publications Committee would meet at 1:30 p.m. in the lobby Tuesday, and the Convention Expense Committee at 8 a.m. at the Information Desk on Tuesday. The Salary & Donations Committee was presently in session.

It was announced that ice water would be available on all the tables in the morning.

Chmn. Pokladnik asked that the convention recognize Otto Hanus (66) for his diligence in taking care of all assignments promptly.

Otto Hanus received standing ovation as he returned t,'; the room after taking care of an assignment.

He proceeded to the microphone to thank the convention and to say that he was proud to be an SPJST member and he loved his work. He also announced that it would be all right to leave delegate packets on the tables over night.

He also thanked the Waco area lodges for obtaining such excellent facilities for the convention. He also announced that flowers had been sent for the head table by the officers, directors and staff of the First National Bank of Temple.

Albert Banik (35) announced that those desiring delegate pictures should go to the Information Desk to place their order.

Rudy Hafner (74) asked for more specific directions to Linden Hall.

Silas Smith (66) obliged.

Robert Dobecka (6) announced that the buses would start taking people from the front of the Convention Center at 5:30 this afternoon to Linden Hall. He said there are 5 buses and they would shuttle back and forth to Linden Hall and return later this evening.

Chmn. Pokladnik announced the appointees of the Youth Committee for this convention only, as follows: District 1 Lillie Matejka (39), chmn.

Pokladnik, Chmn. Pokladnik announced to the delegates if they desired to purchase flowers for the banquet, they could order at the desk on Tuesday between 9 and 10 a.m. and also on Wednesday between 9 and 10 a.m. The florist is Bellmead Wers.It was announced that SYD Dorothy Massey and President Nick A. Morris would meet with the Youth Committee at 1 p.m. this date.

C'hmn. Pokiadnik asked if the convention wished to have the minutes read and the general concensus was that they did not so desire.

Chmn. Pokladnik called for correction of the minutes. Eric F. Stein (142), of the Tellers & Balloting Comm, asked that his lodge be corrected to 142. On page 10 in the sentence "His wife, Maxine Sefeik, works at the office and gets $100 a month," add "paid by the editor," and from the sentence "the editor and his wife make $14,000 a year," delete "and his wife." Frank Veselka (79) wanted a clarification on page 12 as to whether the vote on the motion not to seat Jarda Cerny (111) had been unanimous.

Chmn. Pokladnik said that it was carried by a two-thirds vote. There were two corrections on page 8 to correct spelling Laddie Socha (160) under Convention Expense Comm., and Karl Lindemann (88), member of Grievance Comm. On page 17, correct spelling of Henry Breitkreutz's (35) name. Page 14, Jerry Mikulas (47) pointed out that Silas Smith's proper title is State Field Manager. Also on page 14, Mildred Holeman (88) questioned the time each delegate may speak to a motion and thought it should have been 5 minutes. The time given, 4 minutes, is correct. On page 15, (Sales and DonatAons Committee should correctly read Salaries & Donations Committee.

On page 18, instead of Mike HafAer, it correctly should read Rudy Hafner (74). Motion was made by Dan Grossman (80) to accept the minutes as corrected, seconded by Henry Skrabanek (130). Motion carried.

Chmn. Pokladnik said that we need a motion to approve the appointees of the Youth Committee.

Motion was made by Zephyr Marek (174) to approve the Youth Committee as appointed and the second was by Frank Klinkovsky (47).

Motion carried.

Chmn. Pokladnik announced that the By-Law Committee preferred to have their table to the side instead of in front of the chairman's platform and it will be moved this afternoon.

The roll call was read by Convention Secy. Helen Oates. John Murphy (92) noted that Clara Kri-

vanek's (92) name was omitted from the roll call. The correction was made.

Chmn. Pokiadnik called for the By-Law Committee to be seated and called Legal Advisor Reuben Lesikar to the microphone to present a resolution.

Jerry Ermis (88), chairman of the Convention Expense Committee, asked to have his committee meet immediately. Chmn. Pokladnik asked them to please wait until after the legal advisor had made his report.

President Morris cautioned the secretaries to be sure to mark the minutes correctly as to whether they are morning or afternoon and 'he correct date.

Reuben Lesikar, Legal Advisor, made a presentation of a resolution to be considered by the delegates of this convention. The resolution pertaining to the charter and is made a part of these minutes.

There was considerable discussion from the floor but Legal Advisor Lesikar pointed out that the purpose of the resolution was for the Society to be consistent with actual practice and to protect the Society in the future should the State Legislature choose not to renew our charter. Chmn Pokladnik called for votes to accept the resolution.

It carried unanimously.

Former SL President Edward L. Marek spoke a few words of greeting and charged the convention to build today for tomorrow. He received a standing ovation.

Chmn. Pokladnik asked that the By-Law Committee be seated at their table. By-Law Comm.

Chmn. Jerry Milan (154) called attention to all the by-laws and supplements, and Art. 9 which requires that there be a two-third vote to change the by-laws. He praised his committee for their diligence. He called attention to Art. 12(n) which required that all changes to the by-laws were supposed to have been presented to the committee on by-laws previous to the convention, but 16(g) provides that rejected recommendations can be an accredited delegate in the convention during deliberation of the respective article.

Jeannette Euban.k (88) asked about procedures for correcting punctuation and was informed that this should be presented at the time the particular by-law was

By Laws Chmn. Milan called attention to page 14 in which a correction had been made deleting "effective immediately," under Membership.

By Laws Chmn. Milan noted that on page 15 under Art. 1(c) there was a correction: Supreme Lodge means officers and directors of the Society.

Mildred Holeman (88) spoke pertaining to page 14, Supreme Lodge, the question of deleting Legal Advisor, which would, in effect, mean that the Legal Advisor would no longer be an elected member of the Supreme Lodge. When Delegate Holeman's 4-minute speaking time was up, Jeannette Eubank (88) yielded, her time. The chair ruled that it would be necessary for the delegates to approve her speaking additional time. A motion was made by Tillie Helmcamp (88) to extend Mildred Holeman's speaking time 4 minutes; seconded by Sanford Q. Schmid (44). Motion carried. The discussion perinined to the Legal Advisor's salary, whether or not he was working full or parttime and whether he was using the office space provided for a fulltime attorney in the Supreme Lodge Bldg. Tillie Helmcamp (88) said if we had a full-time Legal Advisor in the SPJST Bldg., this would eliminate rent and other business expenses of maintaining an office and save money for the SPJST. It was pointed out by the chair that the discussion of the salary would be pertinent at the time the committee on Salaries & Donations made its report and was out of order at this time.

Sidney Kacir (87) urged the convention to retain elected officials as elected officials, otherwise the convention would erode the power of the delegates to choose their representatives.

Tillie Helmcamp (88) moved that the words "Legal Advisor" be deleted from the paragTaph under Supreme Lodge. Lillian }Inn (88) seconded the motion. The motion did not carry. The body will remain as now constituted.

Chmn. Pokladnik called for a 10-minute recess at 10:35 a.m.

Helen N. Oates Pauline Shiller Meeting was, reconvened at 11 a.m.

Rudy Sefcik (54) stressed the fact

that the postal service is slow and that is the reason for the delay in some publications.

Chmn. Pokladnik remarked that the English language is being used at the convention instead of Czech because there was no request for Czech to be used.

Discussion of Article 1(k) followed. Louis Hanus (88) asked if this article is related to Art. '72 in any way. By-Law Comm. Chmn.

Milan (154) said there was none.

Henry Vitek (20) requested status of the social member. Mildred Horak (13) asked if social members' dues could be paid at any time. By-law Comm. Chmn. Milan said they could. Article 1(k) was approved.

John Murphy (92) asked if the delegates had voted on Art. 1-c.

There was no vote taken before discussion of Art. 1-k. Arnold Vrla, (130) asked if the Legal Advisor was to be deleted from Art. 1-e. ByLaw Chmn. Milan said no, this article is just a clarification of words.

Art. 1-c was approved. Vernon Wood, Jr., (35) wanted a new Article 2-c to read: "no officer or director of the Supreme Lodge could be a chairman or co-chairman of the convention." The ByLaw Committee did not recommend this article. There was no motion made, so no vote was taken.

Article 2 — no change.

Article 3 — no change.

Article 4-a was then discussed.

Frank Sembera (88) spoke against the change of as to how many members per delegate. Tillie Helmcamp (88) spoke against the change.

Harley Cox (88) spoke against the change and said Lodge 88 was for the organization 100 percent. Johnnie Krizan (6) said Lodge 6 is also against the change. Alvin Sefcik (173) wanted the article to remain the same. R. J. Hamner (74) said he was for the change if the delegates selected were qualified. E. J. Kadlecek (88) spoke against the change. Art. 4-a, 1, 2, 3, was defeated. Art 4-b was approved. Art. 4-c was approved. Art. 4-e 3, was discussed. Albert Banik (35) said the words "each of" should remain in the article. By-Law Committee Chairman Milan said this would eliminate many new members.

Tillie Helmcamp (88) also stated that the words "each of" should remain because the delegates need to be well informed. President Nick

Morris (66) asked if this change would mean that a delegate did not have to attend meetings the first two years. By-Law Chmn.

Milan said possibly. E. J. Kadlecek (88) said we should leave *le words "each of" in the article but insert the word "regular." Emil Matula (133) agreed with E. J. Kadlecek. Johnnie Krizan (6) asked to vote on the change separately.

Article 4-e 3 regular passed.

Art. 4-e 3 deletion of the words, "each of" failed.

Tillie Helrncamp (88) questioned Art. 4-f 2 as to the method of electing delegates of the local lodges. By-Law Comm. Chinn. Milan said that the deletion of this section of the article was to aid the local lodges in their elections.

John Murphy (92) spoke for the change of the word "must" in Art. 4-f 2. Mildred Holeman (88) spoke for the deletion of Art. 4-f 2. Art. 4-f 2 deletion was passed.

Stanley Mrnustik (17) asked if the numbers and letters of the articles would later be changed. ByLaw Comm. Chmn. Milan said yes.

Lillian Kosarek (47) questioned Art. 5-b 3 regarding mileage to the convention and was told to talk to the Credentials Comm.

Ed Mazanec (66) said he had sent a proposal to the By-Law Comm. stating "if a proposal is submitted and approved by the delegates then it should be in the by-laws word for word." He said that he was not accusing any one but an error had occurred. Chmn. Pokladnik said that this had been considered and was the purpose of the recordings taken at this convention. President Nick Morris (66) said that these recordings were.the official tapes.

Evelyn Mikeska (88) questioned Art. 7 as to names• being printed on the secret ballot. H. M. Swonke (181) asked if a substitute is the official delegate in referendum elections. By-Law Comm. Chmn.

Wednesday, September 1, 1976 Milan said yes. Henry Breitkreutz (35) stated how a secret ballot could be held. Annie Steiner (84) said that Art. 7-a did not end with a complete sentence. By-Law Committee Chmn Milan said this would be corrected. Wanda Kennedy (88) asked for a clarification of the word substitute. She asked if the substitute delegate present at the convention would henceforth be the official delegate. By-Law Committee Chmn. Milan said that if the substitute had been approved Y. y the Credentials Comm. they are Art. 7-a b and c were approved.

Chum. Pokladnik said that Mr. and Mrs. Albert Banik (35) were to meet with President Morris during the lunch break.

Johnnie Krlzan (6) then read the announcements. He stated that if the delegates need to purchase banquet tickets they should do so by 12;30 p.m. Tuesday. Johnnie Erizan (6) stated that TV Channels 6, 10, 2 and 8 had given television coverage of the flag raising ceremony and the convention.

Tuesday's edition of the Waco Citizen had a picture and a story regarding the flag raising. Johnnie Krizan said that the delegate picture samples were in the lobby. Orders should be placed by Wedne%day morning and the small ones were S4.50 and the large one.*; at this time were $30.00 unless more orders were to be received. He ann un.:ed that the Waterworks Restaurant would have Meth music from 5 to 8 p.m.

DISTRICT II SALES REPRESENTATIVE'S REPORT The sales membership contest is over and we had five winners in District IL Our first place winner was Brother Chester Shmoldas.

He won .a trip to the Texas Fraternal Congress. Runners-up and winning trips to the Fraternal Congress were Brothers Louis Driska and Lulls Navratil. Winners of watches were Sister Cheryl Smith and Brother Jerry Tomastik.

Congratulations to all these fine winners.

In June we sold 79 members for $397,500 in insurance sales. In July we sold 77 members for $365,500. This gives us a total of 668 members for $3,194,000 in insurance sales. We have now written more than 122% of our quota.

Wednesday, September 1, 1976 LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE Dear Members, The regular monthly meeting for August was called to order by the president He led the members in the pledge of allegiance and asked that all remain standing for a moment of silence in respect to our departed members.

We are happy to report that members who have been on the sick list are recuperating nicely.

Sister Nelda Marek reported that Larry Posvar had taken out additional insurance.

For some time now, the members have talked about having a picnic.

The president appointed the following to serve on the Picnic Committee: Jerry and LaVerne Cabla, Joe and Bernice Sebek, Gladys and Ben Tyroch and Louise and Jerry Zavodny. This committee is to offer suggestions and recommendations to the members and the members will then vote as to whether to have a picnic or not at our meeting on Sept. 8th, at 8 p.m.

President Schneider appointed the following to serve on the ByLaw Committee: Ben Tyroch, Eugene Haisler, E. J. Geistma.n, and Ken Andel. Harold Schneider, president, and Edwin Marek, vice president, will also serve on this committee. They will bring forth any recommendations to the members.

Sister Louise Zavodny reported that she and her husband Jerry along with Jerry and LaVerne Cabla. attended the District II fall meeting held at Lodge 74, Lovelady. She complimented Lodge 74 on their beautiful facilities and cordial hospitality shown to all.

Congratulations to Louis and jerelene Vrana on the birth of their first son, David Wayne. David is welcomed by sisters, Laura, Valerie, Vicki, and Deborah, and grand parents Dan and Irene Hoelscher.

CZECII-MORAVIAN MEMORIES

HOUSTON BICENTENNIAL Our great Czech-Moravian Heritage was indeed represented with dignity and accomplishment in outstanding performances participating in Houston's celebration of our country's 200th anniversary.

Preparations began about two years ago, when an official of the Houston Bicentennial Commission., who knew our composer-organist Brother Pech, suggested to him to write a musical score and a production of a large Czech-Moravian Spectacular to be perfOrmed either In the Houston Coliseum or the Jones Concert Hall.

Brother Pech was rather reluctant to such suggestion, knowing very well how much work on his part a 2-hour musical score and choreography would take — the endless rehearsals, the 300-400 performers necessary, the technical staff he would have to assemble and supervise and the many endless details. All of the above entered his mind — when there was uncertainty in his mind, if the Czech, Moravian, Silesian, and slovaldan descendants of the Texas-Houston and vicinity population could be united. Never before was anything of this representative undertaking- attempted. Could the Cvevit nation's descendants be united? Such large, suggested production, if Brother Pech decided to head it and spend the many months writing music, choreography and staging, - would require many dedicated, unselfish people working together for a great ideal pretentiousness.

Brother Pech discussed this situation at great length with our wellknown cultural leader Sister Birdie !Usher who he wanted to head the public relations and publicity; Brother Edwin Kuropata who, because of his accounting skills with

Wednesday, September 1, 1976 IRS, Brother Pech insisted should handle the finances and the treasury with Sister Vera Finn of KJZT. Brother Pech thought I should supervise the Technical Oommittee.

Later on, Brother Pech wanted to ask Brother Tim Kostom to handle the stage and lighting and have others in charge of supervision of the wardrobe and others as assistant directors in charge of specific rehearsals, as the production program developed.

To begin with Sister Birdie Hilsher, as chairman, invited and actually accomplished for the first time to assemble all representatives of the Czech-Moravian societies in an informative meeting held in our SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. About 32 officials of all our fraternal lodges attended. Sister Hilsher made the opening explanation address, Brother Emil Kuropata presented a tentative budget of a very conservative, carelfully prepared, and very modest projection—easily accomplished. Of course, there were no expenses involved to any present society as all income was to have come from the advance sale of tickets. Then Brother Pech was asked to address the meeting. He said that he has completed, as a gift to our Czech-Moravian heritage, the musical score for a 2hour spectacular employing the talents of our incomparable Czechfounded Concert Choral Society (membership open to all present if capable) performing "Prodana Nevesta," segments from "Libuse," etc., plus three new Folklore Ballets by the newly-formed CzechMoravian Folklore Dancing Ensemble, and the world renowned Sokol gymnasts in special dance, calisthenics, drills and apparatus.

The above-mentioned Concert Choral Society, the Folklore Dancers, and the Sok°ls were already in rehearsals. The additional segments not yet in rehearsal was a special Czech nation's Beseda, consisting of Czech, Moravian, Valach's Mountain and Slovak segments, specially arranged by Brother Pech and to be performed by 8 or 12 circles.

The second segment in this group was a beautiful Folklore Panorama of about 300 mature fraternal members in a performance of special music of folklore songs, dances and marches — a very colorful number. The third number in this category if rehearsals were to

11 begin was the Great Finale Allegorical Scene employing all the performers of this spectacular 2-hour show.

Those of us who heard the musical score when Brother Pech played it for us and explained the scenic settings, the acting, the singing and the choreography were so surprised at the beauty and the extent of this presentation of our Czech-Moravian heritage. Such program would have, however, required weekly rehearsals for each of the above-mentioned segments, which even though it would have been only a week• for each participant, would have pressed Brother Pech into at least five rehearsals each and every week for two years.

Brother Pech was very apprehensive and afraid Of the physical strain, especially with the big Folkloric Panorama, the Beseda, and the Finale Allegorical Scene of all the performers, which alone took about half an hour to perform.

In one of the prelimenary meetings, Brother Hanka and Brother Hilsher both spoke up and pointed out that if Brother Pech is heading this great show, his music and directing of the production would assure the success of this outstanding Czech-Moravian event and especially since no cost would be' required by any lodges; only unity and the advanced sale of the tickets which was the only possible way to accomplish this cultural Bicentennial Czech-Moravian program, even though, at Sokol slets in Prague, all tickets used to be sold out one year in advance.. All of us knew that it would take unity among all of us Czech-Moravian descendants and the• leadership of every lodge and society to accomplish this project In the called meeting, after answering all inquiries and passing out printed programs of the projest to all interested, Chairperson Birdie Hilsher dismissed the meeting and invited all participants to discuss matters about the advance sale of tickets and the technical or artistic participation of their lodges and send their information to this informative committee which called this meeting.

Brother Peen was also invited by Brother Hanka, then president of Lodge 88, to address the monthly meeting. He did so giving all the

above stated details and also his fears of all the work being placed on his strength and time of his teaching obligations. His address 1vas given a long and enthusiastic round of applause. Copy of Brother Pech's program of the Bicentennial Czech-Moravian Heritage was also mailed to the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

As time passed on, it was more and more realized that the Sokol Gymnastic Society which does not sell insurance and is in no competition with any of our Czech-founded fraternal insurance societies and whose membership bettongsk, to all fraternal organizations, be it the SPJST or other Czech societies, may have to give its leadership to this event. Brother Pech was asked if it would be possible to scale down his musical score so that it could be presented, or segments of it, in our Sokol Houston Auditorium.

He graciously did so, leaving out completely the big and colorful Folkloric Panorama (which Was intended primarily for the adult fraternal membership participation), the National Beseda number and the whole Great Finale Allegorical Scene. The Concert Choral Society also had to change its program presentation to suit a different type of audience — more all American, rather than of Czech descent. The title of the event was also changed to "Days of Our Pioneers," a Czech Fine Arts presentation of the Czech-Moravian Heritage and this was nationally advertised by the Washington Bicentennial Office and in Houston.

"Days of Our Pioneers," was a great, great success with an audience for standing room. only and I, as president of the Sokol sponsoring organization, was proud to accept the official Bicentennial Citation for the Houston Czech-Moravian Heritage presentation on behalf of all of our pioneer descendants and our Czechoslovak culture' in America. A full report of the above event was already published in the Vestnik by Sister Birdie Hilsher, the cultural chairperson.

Two other Bicentennial events in Houston concluded this 200 years commemorative festivity and the Czech-Moravian Heritage was represente'd in both. The Sokol sponsored a beautiful float in the main event, the Bicentennial Houston

12 parade and performances on July 4th, 1976. The appearance of our float and marchers was applauded all the way through the Houston downtown streets. How well our Czech-Moravian Heritage was received in the parade by the throngs lining the streets and the officials.

Suffice it to say that a coveted second prize of many prizes was awarded to our participation, which had, on the beautifully detorated float, Brother Repkas band of musicians and their playing was applauded the full length of the parade. On the float were seated the lovely girls of the Folklore Dancing Ensemble in their beautiful costumes designed by Sister Hilsher and the costumed men dancers holding the' colorfully decorated May pole with its many colored ribbons held by our very small Sokol costumed girls. The float band was playing constantly the lively tunes of the Czech-Moravian music and was followed by the Soko Houston marching unit.

It 1-zobably is hard to believe when I say that the applause for the musical and the float with the marchers never ended all the way through the parade, but it is true and we therefore proudly accepted the second winning plaque (the first was won by a 100-piece high school marching band). In the afternoon our Sokol girl gymnasts and the Folklore Dancing Ensemble performed on different stages throughout the Houston downtown district, receiving rightful accolades for their beautiful appearances and performances.

The concluding Bicentennial event of the Czech-Moravian Heritage was the appearance' of the Sokol Special gymnast unit and the new Folklore Dancing Ensemble at the traditional Cyril-Methodius Houston Day. Again much enthuElute applause rewarded their perforraance especially the newly-introduced Moravian May pole dance.

Much thanks belong to all fraternal sisters and brothers who worked so hard at all these projects hand-in-hand with our enthusiastic Sokol membership. We are most grateful to our Ewer Vestntk and Brother Rudy Setfcik, the KJT, KJZT, and all other newspapers, the' TV and radio stations, and especially the C'zech Hour of Radio Station EZFRD, and to all Houston news media.

In the ultimate however, our most heartfelt gratitude is to the artistic leadership, dedication to our culture, the hours and months of unseen hard work of Brother John J. Pech, his much appreciated beautiful music which he did for all of us of Czech-MoravianSilesian and Slovak descent in Texas. To him and to all participants and everyone who contributed in any way to the Czech Fine Arts cultural presentations, Sister Birdie Hilsher, chairman, and last, but not least, to all the beloved mem

bership of all our fraternal societies, the SPJST, KJZT, KJT, Western Fraternal Life, Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance, CSA, and Sokol, we owe our thanks. LODGE NO. 48, BEYERSVILLE Dear Readers, The September meeting of the Beyersville Youth Olub will be held September 12th at 3 p.m..

Note the change of Sunday due to Labor Day holidays. This will be a very important meeting because we are going to reorganize, so all members please make plans to attend and bring some prospective members.

Our club has been participating in the summer activities of the SPJST. We had entrants and winners in the District YAD. We are especially proud of Becky Swanson who was chosen District II Queen.

Her duchess is Ginger Wuensche.

Another summer has passed and we all are back in school with all the homework.

I'll cut this letter short. Our last meeting was held Sunday, August 15th. Attendance was good.

We were proud to have Rev. Henry Beseda, pastor of the Brethren Church, as our guest speaker. He showed slides of pictures he took in Greece. They were very interesting.

LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting was called to order August 8th by Patti Stanislay.

The pledge was recited and Cindy Kofnovec called the roll. The minutes were read by Laura Leuschner.

President Catherine Januszewski opened the meeting at 2 p.m.

Kellen Kocurek led the group in the pledge of allegiance. Secretary Albert Martin was not present, so his sister, Theresa, read tue minutes and called the roll. Treasurer Theresa Martin then gave her report.

We talked about new and old business. YAD and camp were' also discussed. The meeting was then adjourned.

Members under 11 years of age did paper mache; members 11 and older did macrame into necklaces, rings and bracelets. Refreshments were served at the same time.

The adult lodge had their meet-

ing on August 5th and there were 5 youth club members present at that meeting.

LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Members, August 15th was our SPJST Lodge 13 youth meeting of the month.

Brother Henry Beseda was our special speaker, he showed us slides of Greece, where he had made a trip recently. It was very interesting, the hugh marble buildings, built 500 years before Christ. It was almost impossible for any human being to build them and the carvings are perfect, but those people did, and on top of mountains.

He also recited the pledge of allegiance, and sang songs with, us.

We thanked him and, really enjoyed and appreciated him doing this for us.

After the meeting was over, we had our contest on vases. Kim Brinkman received 1st place; Theresa Zgabay, 2nd; Patty Tylacka, 3rd. Congratulations to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

Birdfeeders will be our next contest in September.

We did real good at the SPJST Annual Feast on our booths and cakes. We decided to work to pay for our mother lodge PA system which will be about $1,200. A big smile, hand clapping thank you to Mrs. Harry Beaman, Jr., for do-

21 nating a handmade quilt for us to sell tickets on at the annual feast.

We will have our youth club booth setup again for various games because everybody seemed to enjoy it very much. Thanks to Mrs. James Krenek for taking care of this for us as well as getting the soda pop and all.

We missed our assistant youth leader, Mrs. Glenn Spitzenberger because she wasn't feeling well and couldn't make our meeting. We hope that she is OK now.

After our meeting was over, we had cake and refreshnients, this was enjoyed by all. And I do not want to forget the hayride everyone enjoyed so much. Thank you, Mr. Sonny Spacek and Mr. Werner Jatzlau for driving the tractors and pulling the wagons; also to all the chaperones and our youth leader, Mrs. Nellene Spacek, for planning all this for us and the food, plus refreshments which were served after the hayride.

I hope to see all of you at our next meeting Sept. 19th, at 3 p.m.

LODGE NO. 30, TAITON Dear Readers, Sunday, August 22nd the Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their annual summer outing at the Wharton Park. We all went swimming at the Wharton Health Club and then had our meeting.

The meeting was called to order

by President Diane Dluhos. Deann Krpec led the pledge and Clare Dorotik said the prayer.

We discussed our winnings at District YAD; all first place winners advanced to State YAD August 29th in Temple.

Our next meeting will be on the first Sunday in September (the 5th) at 2:30 p.m., at the Taiton Community Center.

The meeting was then adjourned and we enjoyed a delicious supper prepared by the mothers. The supper consisted of chicken, rice, pickles, bread, beans, pudding and tea.

Brother Koble was born Nov. 23, 1925, in Havre, Montana. He was in the dairy business in Gilmer for 15 years prior to moving to Judson five years ago and organizing the Able-Vend vending machine business serving Longview and surrounding areas.

In addition to his other activities, Brother Kale was a charter social member of SPJST Lodge 178, a devoted leader and supporter of the Longview Boy Scout Troop 200, a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II and a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

Brother Don Koble is the first member of our Lodge 178 to precede us to eternal rest.

Brother Don was a very devoted, active, and proud member who promoted benevolence, the SPJST Society and its purpose. He has served as our lodge photographer and served loyally in so many wonderful ways. He was also recipient of a plaque presented to the charter society members at the lodge chartering June 28th, 1975, in Longview.

RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY Sister Helen Jane (Leshikar) Cervenka, a native of Taylor but a resident Of Gainesville for a good many years, died at her home there on Sunday morning, August ist, at the age of 63 years.

She was a certified registered nurse anesthetist and was employed at Gainesville Memorial Hospital, a position she had held since 1961. She belonged to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and to the Texas Association of Nurse Anesthetists; also a member of the county RN Club. She was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church in Gainesville, and a member of Lodge Komensky, SPJST, in Granger.

Surviving are her husband, Daniel G. Cervenka of Gainesville; a son, Dan F. Cervenka of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Sadie Baran and Mrs. Charles (Bess) Kuhn of Taylor; and a brother, Ben Leshikar of Taylor.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Gainesville with

Taylor rites at 4 p.m. Wednesday from Co. ,dra, Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Russell Klapp officiating.

Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Brother Shiller was born June 13, 1886, in the community of New Sweden in Williamson County. He moved with his parents, the late Joseph H. Shiller and Rosalie Jirasek Shiner, to Victoria County where he continued his public school education in the Shillerville school. He attended Fords Academy in Austin before entering Texas A&M University and then the University of Texas at Galveston, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy.

He was employed by the J. D. Nash Drug Co. in Mart, the Caldwell Drug Co. in Caldwell and the Hardin and Parker Drug Co. in Victoria, prior to moving to Rowena in 1924 where he took over the ownership of Shillei's Pharmacy from his brother, Dr. J. J. Shiller.

He served the Rowena community as a pharmacist until his retirement in 1959.

He was married to Sadie Frances Esterak December 26, 1911, in Victoria. He moved to San Angelo in

1975. He was a member of the Rowena Lions Club, SPJST Lodge No. 49, and was a Mason.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Harvey Hoelscher of San Angelo, Mrs. Henrie Ethel Blake of Silver SPrings, Md.; one son, James F. Shiller of Dallas; six grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren.

Brother Kubala was born in Fayetteville on Sept. 10th, 1898 and was married to Alma Knippel in Fayetteville, November 21, 1921 He retired as a bookkeeper from the SPJST Home Office in Temple after more than 20 years of service. He was a member of Fayetteville SPJST lodge, St. Mary's Catholic Church, KJT, and Knights of Columbus in Fayetteville.

Surviving are his wife Alma Kubala of Temple; a son, Edward J. Kubala of Miami, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. Angelene Stastny of Houston, Mrs. Margaret Wilson of Richardson; a brother, Frank Kubala of Fayetteville; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Sister Faust was born in Caldwell, August 14, 1901 and she was the daughter of the late Emil Maresh and Frances Trcalek Maresh.

She was a member of Snook Brethren Church, the Snook SPJST Lodge 9, and the Women's CSA Society of Snook.

Sister Faust was married to Frank Vince Faust, November 21,

1917 at New Tabor. He preceded her in death April 15, 1960.

Funeral services for Sister Faust were held Sunday, July 11 at 2 p.m. in the Snook Brethren Church with Rev. John R. Gantt, Jr. officiating. Burial was in New Tabor Cemetery.

A prayer service was held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Phillips-Luckey Funeral Home.

Survivors include six sons, Moody Faust and Leo Faust of Snook, Alvin Faust and Ed Louis Faust of Somerville, Franklin Faust of Bryan and Marvin Faust of Katy; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Dorothy) Wilha of San Angelo and Mrs. Mark (Judy) Pittenger of Tacoma, Washington; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one sistter, Mrs. Milady Reeves of Caldwell.
