FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, August 8th we journeyed to Lodge No. 74, Lovelady, for the District II fall meeting after notifying DYC Mary Heisler, previously, that we could not attend the District IV YAD due to our previous commitment of nearly a yeax ago to attend the meeting at Lovelady.

The day was definitely enjoyable in our pineywoods section of Texas and the attendance was also good.

Lodge No 74, Lovelady, membership went out of their way, to make this a wonderful day for all present and it is easy to understand why so many people came forth with statements such as: "SPJST Lodge 74 is the best thing that has happened to this locality and county!" Yes, they were the most gracious hosts and are to be complimented and that includes their fine, upstanding youth of their youth club. Members like Stephen Parrish, the MC, prove to be perfect young citizens. Just keep up the good work and remain fraternal; you can't miss if you do that!

All in all, Lodge No. '74 gives a good account of itself and SPJST in the East Texas section of our state by being well accepted by the local citizenry and entire community.

The fact that SPJST is originally of Czech-Moravian origin does not seem to bother anyone there; in fact, they enjoy the Czech polkas

and waltzes as much as our own native Texas country/western, etc., and live in harmony. * * Every once in a while we hear of some disagreements in this or that lodge and we have to remember that, as long as there are two or more people involved, there will be different opinions. There are some people who will insist on having their way, some who will try to compromise and some who will rather say nothing. Generally, the majority, unless they are not thinking, will come up with a sensible solution. Give people time to think things out and they will come up with rational solutions; our recent SPJST Convention proved that in some instances. This brings to mind a fellow sergeant in the Army; no matter what happened

he would always say: "That's nothing. That could even happen to a married man!" It was amusing to hear him say that to two of his soldiers in his platoon who got into a near fighting mood in an argument. They grinned, blushed and forgot all about their argument, when he told them that, or when one soldier fell on some shell on the parade ground and skinned his knees and elbows! Yes, it could even happen to a married man . . . especially disagreements. * * The Excerpts from the July, 1978, Supreme Lodge meeting are in this issue beginning on page 3. Read them over carefully. Your editor spent all the time he possibly could in the 2 1/3 days and observed the progress of the meeting while there. You will note where Honorary President Marek was designated to write the history of the SPJST. Yours truly also volunteered any assistance he could give.

You will notice, under Salaries and Remunerations, that the note from our Secretary-Treasurer denotes that he will await the final minutes from the convention secretaries and act accordingly. * * The Proceedings of the XXIInd Convention will be arriving to be' printed as soon as they arrive and we call your attention to the fact that they are important and will take space in the forthcoming issues.

EWSBRIEFS We received a very nice' card from the High Tatra Mountains in Czechoslovakia from Brother Tim and Sister Rosalee Kostom where they were on a vacation.

Also, fifteen teenagers and their chaperones came by the printshap and office Thursday, August 12th.

We enjoyed their visit. * * A baby girl named Diane Renee Pavelka, was born July 16, 1976, weighing 9 lbs., 1 oz., and measured 21 inches long. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Pavelka, Jr., of Temple (former residents of Corpus Christi). Diane, her parents, George and Marie Pavelka, including her brother and sister, Edward and Sharon, are all members of Lodge' 117, Robstown.

Little Diane is the granddaughter of Mrs. Helen Pavelka and the late George Pavelka of Robstown. * Pavelka Reunion The descendants of the late Joseph and Marie Pavelka of Elk, will hold their annual family reunion Sunday, Sept. 5th at the Elk SPJST Hall. Each family is asked to bring food, tea, coffee; the plates and eating utensils will be' furnished. Registration begins in the morning and dinner will be served at noon. Meeting in the afternoon with plenty of time for visiting.

EXCERPTS FROM THE MIND. OF THE THIRD REG. QUARTE MEETING OF THE SUPREME. LODGE SPJST HELD JULY 13, 14 and 15, 1976, AT THE HOME OFFICE IN TEMPLE, TEXAS The meeting was called to order on July 13th at 10:30 a.m. with the following members present: Nick A. Morris, Joe B. Hejny, Leonard D. Mikeska, Ben Zabeik, Reuben B. Lesikar, John A. Kubena (I), Henry E. Vitek (II), Cyrill Pokladnik (III), Stanley Broz (IV), Matt S. Vanek (VI), Frank Veselka (VII).

It was reported that Director Alfred Hilsher who was not present had been confined to the hospital.

Honorary President Marek was present.

MINUTES — The first order of business was consideration of the minutes of the April 6-8 Supreme Lodge meeting. It was agreed to dispense with the reading of the minutes but each member was given the opportunity to call attention to any corrections needed.

The minutes were approved with one addition of information.

Convention Proceedings Tapes — Consideration was given to setting. up a procedure for handling the tapes of the X,.XII Convention Proceedings. Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska reported that the tapes are in his possession under lock and that none of the tapes had been played to date.

After the matter had been discussed at length a motion was adopted that the XXII Convention Proceedings tapes be played only in the presence of a majority of the Supreme Lodge members.

It was decided tha.t the tapes be stored in a safety deposit box at a Temple Bank, President Morris reported on the following: LEGISLATION — He referred to items covered in his written report and discussed developments

(7) a letter of thanks from Debbie Becan, Cindy Horak, Jerry Manak, Paul Pokladnik, Cherri, Randy, and Vicki Petr and Larry Sadecky for the invitation to their Beseda Circle to perform at the convention.

(8) a letter from the Goodson McKee Recording Studio of Waco, proposing to audit and produce 12inch lorig•play record albums of the convention chorus program performed at the recent convention.. Prices for producing from 500 to 5,000 were quoted.

It was reported that the convention took action authorizing the making of a record of the convention chorus program. The ramifications of the Society offering the albums for sale were discussed and it was suggested that arrangements might be made with the producer or the Convention Planning Committee to handle the distribution.

A motion was adopted to have President Morris pursue arrangements with the Convention Planning Committee or Goodson McKee for production of records of

3 the convention chorus in a manner that would not involve the Society in the distribution or otherwise and that he report his findings in the October meeting.

HISTORY OF THE SPJST — :President Morris read excerpts from an unofficial copy of the XXII Convention Minutee concerning appointment of an individual to write a history of the SPJST. Honorary President Marek was designated to write a history of the SPJST ® He was granted the full cooperation and assistance from the Home Office for clerical help.

It was also agree'd that Brother Marek be paid for travel, plus his expenses in connection with,writing the history.

Editor Sefcik was called on for comments and he spoke briefly.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting was called back to order at 9 a.m. July 14, 1976.

GROUP HOSPITALIZATION PLAN — In accordance with the decision during the last, quarterly meeting a bid was obtained from another group hospitalization company and that bid was discussed.

It was reported that Director Pokladnik was instrumental in obtaining the bid and that he was present at the Home Office when the agent and representative presented their proposal.

The proposal and benefits were explained and discussed in detail. The representative of our present insurer was present and compared the benefits of the present policy with the proposed policy and with an alternate lower benefit policy. He pointed out the areas where the present coverage was greater than the proposed plans.

Editor Sefcik and Honorary President Edw. L. Marek arrived and both were present in the meeting.

The premiums on the two proposed hospitalization plans were found to be slightly lower but most of the employee benefits under the present plan appeared to be more liberal.

A motion was passed that we retain the present group hospitalization plan.

SPJST DOCUMENTARY SLIDES — The members of the body viewed slides of the convention that had been taken to be used in the proposed documentary slide presentation.

SALARIES AND REMUNERATIONS — The agenda returned to the Convention Proceedings tapes and the members of the Supreme Lodge listened to pertinent portions of the June 17th tapes to attempt to determine the effective dates of sections of the Salary and Donation Committee report relating to fees, allocations and salaries.

This was reportedly necessary sice the official minutes were not yet completed by the convention secretaries and remained uncorrected.

President Morris indicated he was not sure that the minutes of the convention and tape indicate that the directors' new salaries go into effect July 1, 1976.

Recess for the day was taken at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting was called back to order July 15, at 8:30 a.m.

The board resumed discussion of the matter involving determination of the effective dates of the salary increases in question. Legal Advisor Lesikar said he did not want to participate in the decision since he had an interest in the matter.

It was concluded by a show of hands vote after hearing the tapes that the change in salaries, fees, and allocations effected by the XXII Convention be interpreted as being effective immediately (June 17, 1976). It was understood and concluded that the determining factor with reference to attorney loan fee's be the date the application was approved and committed.

(Note by Sec.-Treas. — The salaries and fees of the attorney and directors are being paid according to the old schedule and will so be' paid until a final determination is made.)

Honorary President Marek arrived and was present in the meeting.

State Field Manager Silas Smith reported on the following: SFM Smith referred to his written report and also made oral report on his activities.

He reported progress in certain areas of the state and answered questions.

Wednesday, August 18, 1976 He reported that he was attempting to have new material and to improve on old material to make sales training classes more interesting and educational. But he explained that where there are a number of new sales representatives present, he must repeat some of the old instructions for the benefit of the new sales representatives.

SFM Smith's report was accepted to be' placed of record.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported on the following: REAL ESTATE LOANS — Loans delinquent over three months were brought up and appropriate actions were authorized on each.

ChangeS in the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA) were briefly discussed and the procedure adopted effective June 30th in compliance with the Federal laws was explained. Consideration was given to a special request for a loan. Due to our limited loans funds available for members' use in building homes, it was decided to decline the application.

There was no change in the mortgage loan interest rate and it will remain 81/2%.

MINUTES OF OFFICERS' MEETINGS — Several meetings were held by the officers to consider investments. The minutes of officers' meetings of April 20, May 14, June 10, and June 25, July 9, and July 13, 1976 were read and accepted.

LOAN APPLICATIONS — Loans committed and in process as of July 1 were reported to have increased by about $300,000 since last quarter to $1,453,271.02.

SECURITIES BOUGHT THIS QUARTER — Seven securities purchased during the quarter were reported and the purchase of the securities was ratified on motion duly passed.

Editor Sefcik arrived and was present during the meeting.

VESTNIK BID AND CONTRACT — The bid accepted by the XX.II Convention delegates for publishing the Vestnik was brought up.

Brief report was made on the terms of the accepted bid. Sec.-Treas.

Mikeska stated he had not had time to study the bid and specifications thoroughly since they were just received Monday morning from Chairman Ed Mazanec of the Publication Committee but he noted one' conditon was that the

bidder and the Society were required to sign a written, contract within 60 days of the convention and this would require prompt action.

It was decided that Legal Advisor Lesikar draw the Vestnik contract in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth in the specifications and bid, and the president and secretary-treasurer be authorized to execute such contract.

REST HOME DONATION — SecTreas. Mikeska read excerpts from a copy of the =II Convention minutes concerning the action taken to write off $100,000 of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes' indebtedness to the Society. He questioned whether this amount should be written off effective the date the motion passed or on January 1, 1977. It was agreed that since the motion did not state an effective date of the $100,000 write off that it be interpreted as January 1, 19'77.

The write off check would be made to the S.P.J,S.T. Rest Homes and Supreme Lodge, endorsed and applied on the indebtedness.

NATIONAL FRATERNAL CONGRESS (NFCA) It was stated that we need to determine who will be authorized to attend the annual meeting of the National Fraternal Congress September 26-29 in Hollywood, Florida.

It was agreed that those SL members and editor who indicatd an interest in possibly attending the NFCA annual meeting be authorized to attend.

Sec.-Treas. Mikeska's report was accepted to be placed of record.

EXPENSE ALLOWANCE FOR SUPREME LODGE MEMBERS — It was decided that the members of the Supreme Lodge be authorized expense allowance at official and authorized functions.

Financial Secretary Zabeik reported on the following: INCOME AND EXPENSES — He referred to the list of income and expenses and explained various items listed on the statement.

It was reported that consideration will be given in the January 1977 meeting to assure that the benefit payments and expense items are listed under the proper categories on the financial statements.

He reported on the pleasant ex-

perience of being chosen to present, with Director Broz, an age 96 endowment check to Sister Anna Vojkuvka of Lodge No. 85.

He complimented Director Pokladnik on the efficient way he conducted the .XXII Convention as convention chairman.

Report was made on the amount on deposit in the mortuary fund.

Financial Secretary Zabcik.'s report was accepted to be placed of record.

Report was made on the request from a delegate for an interpretation of Art. 24(a) 7 of our present by-laws having to do with the meaning of the wording "knowledge of the Czech language."

An opinion to a local lodge was presented and discussed. Recommendation was made that each local lodge should review its operations periodically to determine its mode of operation, record-keeping, etc., to conform to the requirements of the State and Pederal statutes. The opinion cencerned items subject to the wagering tax provisions of the Internal Revenue Code, including the 2% excise tax, unrelated business income activities, and the adequancy of the local lodge's records to meet the requirements of the Internal Revenue Code.

It was agreed that President Morris formulate and send a letter to local lodges apprising them of the problems involved in operating unrelated activities. It was understood that the legal advisor would review the letter and recommend changes if needed.

6 It was reported that copies of IRS Forms 990 and 990-T were re-t quested from local lodges annually by the secretary-treasurer's department but that such forms were not checked for accuracy as that would not be feasible without possession of the local lodge books.

He concluded his report by thanking everyone for their fine cooperation.

Legal Advisor Lesikar's report was accepted to be placed of record.

Editor Sefcik requested that consideration be given to the action by the XXII Convention authorizing the Supreme Lodge to provide clerical assistance for the editor.

Editor Sefcik was asked to check into exactly how much clerical help will be needed and he is to report his findings in the October meeting.

Various members of the board stated that they were pleased that Editor Sefcik had been present for the major portion of this meeting.

REPORTS OF THE DIRECTORS: The written report of the directors will be placed of record.

Director Kubena stated that he is grateful to the delegates for being re-elected and that he is looking forward to promoting the Society the next four years.

He complimented Director Pokladnik on the remarkable job in chairing the convention and concluded with other appropriate remarks concerning promoting progress in our Society.

Director Vitek also expressed appreciation on being given the opportunity to serve as director another term.

He commented that this meeting was a good meeting and many items of importance were discussed and decided.

After inviting all to the upcoming Dist. II meeting in Lovelady scheduled for Aug. 8, he concluded his report.

Director Pokladnik reported on behalf of the directors concerning the directors' audit.

Clarifications were requested and comments were made on several expenditures all of which were discussed and explained.

He reported that he was looking forward to the next four years and feels everyone at the Home Office is capable and he looks forward to all of us working together.

He expressed appreciation for those who supported him for convention chairman and for the Supreme Lodge supporting his activities with the National Fraternal Congress.

Director Broz complimented Director Pokladnik on the fine job he did in conducting the convention.

He said he appreciated the cooperation everyone has given him and spoke of some of the problems in increasing activities in District IV. One of the problems was reported to be the fact that the district is scattered with tremendous distance between the lodges.

He stated that he would do his best during the next four years.

Director Vanek spoke of the progress that had been made in District VI the past few years.

He also complimented Director Pokladnik.

He commented on the work and plans he has' for the next four years in District VI. He expressed the need for reconsidering directors' and officers' liability insurance in the October meeting. This coverage reportedly had been considered in several previous meetings but purchase had not been authorized. It was agreed to attempt to secure another bid for the October meeting.

He thanked everyone for the cooperation they had extended him in the past and said he looked forward to the same cooperation in the future.

Director Veselka presented for action an application from SPJST Lodge No. 79 for a loan to construct a lodge building in Corpus Christi on Kostoryz Road. He explained that the building would be the home of Lodge No 79 and would so be identified.

Sec.-Treas. Mikeska read a letter and specifications he had just received from Brother Manta Foster of Lodge No. 79.

The request for the loan was discussed in detail and the application was circulated among the Supreme Lodge members.

A motion was adopted that we support Director Veselka's request in behalf of Lodge 79' SPJST that we will promise to make financing available if there will be enough interest and support among the SPJST members to justify this

loan, and provided other requirements are met and further, provided at least 100 local SPJST members are willing to support the project by their signatures. The motion carried with 8 in favor and 2 opposing.

He thanked the board for past cooperation and said that he missed Director Hilsher who had not been present during the meeting.

He spoke of his plans to continue to work for the SPJST and of lookforward to doing much for the Society in the coming years.

He discussed his work in District VII and concluded his report by stating he will continue his 'efforts.

President Morris presented a draft of guidelines for the State Youth Director as had been agreed earlier during the meeting. It was moved that the matter be deferred until the October meeting. The motion to defer was seconded and carried.

It was agreed that the next meeting be scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. October 12, and to continue the 13th and 14th if necessary.

There being no further business, President Morris adjourned the meetiing at 6:35 p.m.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Brother Jerry Pechal, Lodge No. 47 president, called the meeting to order Monday, August 2nd at 8 p.m.

The flags were brought in by James Allen and Frankie Klinkovsky, who substituted for the absent flag bearer, Vincent Schiller, and led the assembly in the pledge of allegiance to the U.S. flag.

The attendance at this meeting was gratifying because we treated all brothers and sisters, who worked in various booths or the bar to a supper before the meeting. There were many visitors and I shall attempt to name most of them: Theo.

Fuchs, Ginger Klusacek, Jimmie and Shirley Franklin, Marilyn Herring, Albert Koslovsky, Ann Balusek and probably others whom I unintentionally omitted.

We certainly enjoyed having you present at the lodge meeting and do come again. So many of our lodge members attended a lodge meeting for the first time and I hope it isn't the last one. We tried to make you feel at home among

us. Please do come again.

Sister Kosarek read ,the correspondence received: A receipt of the mortuary funds from the SL, a letter from Brother Sidney Kacir, addressed to the lodge president, thanking us for having him as a participant in the patriotic program at the Bicentennial Festival Sunday, July 25th. He introduced the guest speaker, Major H. Dean Boswell of Fort Hood. We thank him for this part of the program.

The following were accepted as new members: adults — Ronald Lee Sodek and Viola Chervenka who was present in the meeting and she spoke briefly telling us that she has been among us working for a long time and is proud to be our member now. President Pechal then called on each of the chairmen for their monthly reports. He also thanked the Bicentennial Committee, namely: Johnie and LaVerne Vanicek, Willie and Adeline Kohutek, Frank and Eleanora Spanhel, Floyd and Emily Stuteville, and Bob and Mary Vasicek who met many times to work out the details of our festival held recently, with lodge president and vice president, plus their wives.

President Pechal singled out Chairmen Brother Johnie L. and Sister LaVerne Vanicek, who did all of the planning of the festival and the program. They had left on their vacation so they were not present to receive their thanks, so Johnie and LaVerne, a big THANK YOU for all of your efforts!

President Pechal then called on the festival chairmen for their reports and all were very impressive.

Each chairman was thanked, including all of the members who helped in any way. A special thanks to the fine sisters who brought the abundance of sweets® kolache, cakes and pies.

To all who worked at each of the work days before the festival and the clean-up afterward, Thanks!

For fear of omitting someone I won't attempt to name them, they know who they are and that we appreciated all their help. This was a big project and needed the cooperation of many members (even the youth club members).

Thanks to each of you for the supper served before the meeting.

Those who helped prepare the meal that afternoon were: Brothers Jerry Trampota, Woodrow Marek, Jerry Pechal, Emil Hejl, Jimmy Allen and Sisters Vallie Zavodny, Frances Hejl, Caralou Allen, and Dorothy Pechal. Many more helped with the last minute details just before serving. I might skip someone, so I won't name any of those.

The menu included sausageburgers, baked potatoes, sweets, and the choice of drinks from the bar and the usual "happy hour" which was held before the meeting this time, instead of afterward.

We wish to thank Brother Bernie Gebala for helping with the patriotic program, the mobile' stage entertainment and the Starfighter jet that was on display at the front of our parking lot.

Our thanks also to Brother Ed and Sister Rose Schneider, our neighbors, who let us use their pasture for a parking lot adjacent to Star Hall.

We accommodated every car without any accidents. Thanks to these folks! With everyone's help, we entertained a large crowd; no one can do it alone.

Thanks also to Brother Steve Pechal for the trumpet solo "The Star Spangled Banner," and the Tactical Air Force Group from Bergstrom AFB, Austin, for participating in the flag-raising ceremony with Bernie Gebala; the Lodge 47 Folk Dancers, the Singing Belles and The Kountry Kousins' Kitchen Kombo, who entertained inside. The talk of Major H. Dean Boswell was very touching. Various entertainment on the mobile stage, in the beer garden, the games booths, food booths, arts and crafts booths, and abundance of drinks, kept everyone happy. Thanks to all participants! Thanks also to all who came out to make this festival so successful.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky gave the trustees' report for Brother Bob Vasicek, who left before the meeting because he was to report to a Houston hospital for eye surgery the next morning.

Sister Caralou Allen, youth leader, gave her report and announced

that the anonymous donor of prize money to the youth club, was Sister Emily Stuteville. Thanks, Sister Emily! Sister Allen also gave the camp report that Seaton Lodge 47 had 32 members present at Camp Val Verde.

My husband and I visited twice during camp and Brother Alfred and Sister Martha Klusacek went with us once. We all certainly enjoyed the rodeo and party afterward. The camp schedule takes a lot of planning but thanks to DYC Frank Klinkovsky everything worked out just right.

Sister Alice Baiming, District II president, invited everyone to the fall meeting at Lodge 74, Lovelady, and so did DYC Brother Frank Klinkovsky. (This meeting was held Sunday, August 8th with a good representation — 36 members — from Lodge 47, Seaton. The hospitality of Lodge 74 was just great!

The winners of the four door prizes were Bill Havlik, Annie Chupik, Laura Peebles and Bernie Gebala.

Saturday, August 7th, A. J. Drabek and The Singing Dutchmasters of Houston played for the first time in the Central Texas area. The band is one of the best we've had at Star Hall. We will have them back next year.

Sunday, August 22nd, Don Peachey's orchestra of Burnett, Wise., will be playing old-time, ballroom and country-western music for your listening and dancing pleasure. The doors will open at 4 p.m. and dance time is 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. There will not be any reservations but we will accommodate a large crowd comfortably. Admission is $2.50 per person, so come to Seaton Star Hall Sunday, August 22nd for a good time and welcome the Don Peachey Orchestra to Central Texas. The astrological significance escapes me now but all of us are dog-gone tired of the heat. Funny, but that's the same reaction most of us had to some cold days last winter. Hopefully, by the time this appears in print, the weather will have leveled off somewhat.

Perhaps the heat kept a few faithful members at home Sunday, August 8th, nevertheless there were enough present to conduct an interesting session. We went through the usual procedure quickly and spent a short time with new business and right on to an earlier than usual adjournment This left time for visiting with each other until a delicious supper was served

by Christine and Carl Ziclr and was enjoyed by all. Then on Monday: "Curses on you, bathroom scale."

Some of our members have been enjoying vacations. Brother Joseph Becan spent some time with his daughter, Lillian Philpot, and family in El Paso. He also visited with his son, Alfred, and family in July. Roy and Lydia Alholm went to Minnesota to visit his mother

and then on to Springfield, Ill., to see son Toni and family.

No meeting goes by without mention of our sick. Sister Viasta Dolkos is recovering from a broken hip at Meadowbrook Nursing Home.

Emil Holacka left Arlington Hospital only to enter All Saints for further treatment. Inez Krivanek reported her daughter Brenda Lackey, was recovering from a severe strep throat infection. Joe Hubenak was hospitalized for tests and treatment. Roger Kubala was painfully burned when his truck exploded but is doing find now.

It is a while until our next meeting, September 12th, but keep it in mind, and also remember our dance August 21st. The next dance following will be the Holy Name Church dance September 18th. Come out and en j oy cool comfort, pleasant company and the good music of Joe Lynn's Rhythmaires.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: At this past -monthly meeting it was reported that Doris Alford, E. J. Bushek and E. Walt Jaster had passed away. We were extremely sorry to hear this and we extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to -itheir families and friends.

We were happy to see Willie Mae Woods and Alfred Hilsher at the' meeting after both had suffered extensively from illness. Welcome back Willie Mae and Al. We hope+ that Barbara Nona is out of Texas Children's Hospital very soon.

It was also announced that because of rising costs (I know everyone is familiar with those two words), the Friday and Saturday night dance tickets will now be $2.50 per person. Thet dinners will also be $2.50 for adult plate and $1.75 for a child's plate. We regret that we have to raise the prices but we hope you will understand and bear with us. These new prices will become effective the week of September 6th, so you still have a little time to take advantage of thei lower prices.

There was also a new policy adopted that will somewhat make up for the rise in dance ticket prices. Ten FREE dance tickets will be given away each Friday and Saturday nights at our dances, to be redeemed at the following Friday or Saturday dance. The tickets must be redeemed' six days after they are given out.

The youth returned from camp Monday, August 9th. We understand that Bobby Allbritton caught quite a few fish and that the kiddos had a fantastic time and can't wait to go again next year. The children who have been painting this summer, at the lodge on Thursdays, will hold a ceramic show Thursday, August 19th at 6:30 p.m. Please come by the Youth Room and vote on the pieces. Your vote will decide the winners. These children have worked long and hard on these pieces and would appreciate your coming to see their ceramic pieces and voting on them.

Don't forget State YAD will be Sunday, August 29th in Temple.

The winners and their parents *ill get the first seats on the bus and after the 15th, contact Sister Ruth Duncan for seats and the cost will

10 be $7 round trip. If there are some seats left try to go and support our youth. If you don't care to go on the bus, get a car pool together and a group of you go.

The Birthday Club Sisters have a new shipment of their Bicentennial Cookbooks in and they are still $3.50 each (mailed, they're $4.00 each). Be sure and pick one up if you don't already have one, or pick a few up for gifts. I hope to have the name of the winner of the Bicentennial Quilt the Birthday Club Sisters gave away at the Homecoming Day celebration, August 15th in my next letter.

Mr. and Mrs. Roger Wistner have just returned from a vacation in Barcelona, Spain. Their daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren live' there. They visited the Breda Sea Coast and they visited a museum that had a large replica of Christopher Columbus' ship, "Maria." This was Mr. Wistner's first trip to Spain and they stayed for a month. I am glad they had a good time and I hope everyone had a great vacation.

Dorit forget that the tickets for the Saturday, September 26th Tommy Dorsey Orchestra dance go on sale August 30th and they are $7.50 per person.

Wednesday, August 18, 1976 more than a bale per acre. After the excess rains in July, the delayed harvesting of the grain crop has finally been finished. Many farmers are not selling their maize, but are placing it in storage because of the current low price.

LODGE NO. 107, FLORESVILLE

Lodge 107 held its regular meeting August 8th at 4:30 p.m.

As usual, the weather was very hot and the attendance was very poor. The minutes were read and approved. Treasurer's report was accepted as read.

DYC Maxine Pavliska and YL Polly Bayer gave reports on Camp and YAD. Both of these events were a great success. Most entries ever in 11 events at YAD and great parte ation in all the activities at camp. The trip on a chartered bus to Astro World had the youth all excited and 41 members signed up for the trip.

As soon as possible, the secretary will publish a list of all who helped on the remodeling and improvement project on the lodge building.

Literature from the Peanut Festical Assn. was passed on to the youth club. A float with our District VII queen and king will probably be entered in the parade.

Lodge 107 wishes to thank the SL for refunding our loan application fee.

President Bayer and Vice President Pavliska, delegates to the XXII Convention, gave a very interesting report of convention activities. The Wm. Pavliskas also donated a picture of the delegates to the lodge. Mike and Christine Baumann will donate a frame for the picture.

A pictorial history of Lodge 107 is being planned if we can find enough pictures of the old lodge building, past officers, and also past delegates to previous con-

ventions; you members who have any such pictures, it would be appreciated if you would let us use these in our lodge home. They could be reproduced or just loaned, donated or whichever way would suit you best. We have to start somewliere and with the remodeling, this seems like the perfect time.

Lucky Wendy Bayer won the door prize for the second time, this time she won $5.

Refreshments were served after adjournment and the members stayed for the "happy hour" from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dominoes and music were enjoyed until late.

Don't forget, happy hour after every meeting from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Dear Members and Friends: The weather is dry and hot and the farmers and ranchers can get their hay in without fear of losing it as was the case in June.

We can imagine that many folks would rather be near the water, rivers, lakes or swimming pools because it is around 100 degrees.

In spite of all outdoor activities going on, we did have a good turnout hosting the District II meeting at our lodge. We fed over 500 people (that's dinner and supper) and we ran out of barbecued chicken. It must have been good, as the rest of the meat.

The kitchen crew did a wonderful job of serving so many People.

I understand there were ten of us who brought potato salad and other salads as well, and none of it was left. Some members brought pastries which were greatly appreciated.

Those of you who did not stay for the meeting and entertainment missed aut on a lot of enjoyment.

The youth members from different lodges entertained with their talented numbers such as piano solos, poem recitation, trio singing accompanied an the guitar, also a littl boy singing a Czech song, "Letela Husicka." I found out later that he was part of the Nick Morris family of Temple.

We were honored to see all of the officers and members from other

11 lodges. I do wish my memory was young so I could remember all of what was said at the meeting so I could write a more interesting report. The jokes, songs, and the sound of the talented brass horn is so easily remembered, we are still laughing about it. Many thanks for all the wonderful entertainment.

The fine entertainment of The Crockett Westerneers will be back on Labor Day in the afternoon playing for a benefit dance (Muscular pystrophy). Members are asked to bring a covered dish and the youth members will work on some type of project.

It was so pleasant to see'' many nice and talented young people Sunday at the district meeting, who were also well behaved and determined to make something of themselves. All in all, it was a pleasant and well-spent Sundayafternoon, August 8th, enjoying meeting members and dear friends from other lodges.

The donation of two kegs of refreshments by Lodge 74 President R. J. Hafner and District II SR Lad Zatopek and his associates, was greatly appreciated.

We hope all of you had a safe trip back and we enjoyed having everyone here at the Lovelmly lodge.

I thought I'd get this in the mail early but somehow things do get off to a slow start.

At this writing I want to add that we do wish 'all of those who are in the hospital a speedy recovery. We feel for all of you who have to be in the Hospital.

We were sorry to hear about Jody Bobalik losing her middle finger. We are hoping it would be saved but wasn't. She got hurt in a tractor mower accident.

Our son, Louis EL Miehka, had a traffic accident and was going to the hospital to have scars removed. We hear that our granddaughter, Cathy, is in the hospital for surgery.

It seems there is no end to accidents and hospital visits in the family this year, but other people are still worse aff with uncurable cancer and other disease. We must be thankful for our health and really take care. Best widies to all!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Brother Se'fcik: I would like to comment on Brother Calvin C. Chervenka's letter that you reprinted August 4th.

I think everything he said was true and great, except the following: "This Czech heritage of the SPJST is the common bond basis for its existence as a fraternal order. If it loses that basis it may well lose its fraternal status. Then it might lose its favorable legal

status and be left to compete with the stock companies."

This is not true, the fraternal part has nothing to do with nationality, and the legal status. The U.S. Government says, if you discriminate against any person regardless of nationality, creed, or color you can lose your legal benefits.

There is one fraternal society that belongs to the National Fraternal Congress of America that is made up of blacks, whites, yellow, red and brown people.

My brothers and sisters, I am not complaining or criticizing anyone.

I would not try to change anything about the SPJST, if I could. I like it just the way it has always been and is now. I am very, very proud to be a member of Lodge 66, Waco, SPJST. Let's stop digging each other and try to live in harmony. We have the best organization in the world, so why change it? I believe that we should think as our late President John F. Kennedy when he said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country," and we insert the word society in place of country.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our classes here at Alvin Community College with Mr. William Soucek as our instructor. No matter how little or how much Czech one knows Mr. Soucek has a way of "putting things across" to help one understand and learn. He projects to the students the great feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction in learning, therefore making it a very enjoyable endeavor.

I am enclosing an article which I hope can be included in the Vestnik soon. Maybe, it might supply food for thought and might spur some prospective students on to join a class, who have been, needlessly hesitant to do so.

Thank you for a publication that provides so much enjoyable reading to so many people. Let's hope that new Czech classes will be started and the existing ones will

Mrs. Olga (Dolezal) Measels - SPJST HOW PROUD ARE WE OF OUR CZECH HERITAGE? Jak se indS? Is that the extent of your or our ability to speak Czech? This is certainly deserving of some serious thinking. We say we are proud of our Czech heritage. We should be, for the Czeths are a proud race.

But, actually, how proud are we?

Are we proud enough to perpetuate the Czech language here in America? We are all familiar with that sterling quality in our Czech people — dogged determination. Why can't we exercise some of that determination now? Some may assume, since their grandparents or parents are no longer living, there is no particular reason to learn the language. Isn't it important enough to show interest in the Czech language, if not, solely, for our benefit, but more importantly for the children? How can we expect the children to show interest, or realize the importance of it all, if our interest isn't evident? There are many individuals of Czech descent who spoke the language when they were younger but who now have forgotten so much. If only they would consider the importance of joining a Czech class, they would soon realize that their subconscious has retained much of the language which they assumed was completely forgotten. Indeed, to many it is a delightful surprise and quite an inspiration to continue and learn more. Topics are varied in many of the classes. The students learn more of the history of Czechoslovakia, much about the people, their customs, songs, and about many beautiful places of interest. Everyone works together and the instructor works closely with the students, so there is no reason why one should be hesitant in joining or forming a class.

The communities which offer Czech in the junior and senior colleges and even high schools are truly fortunate. Those persons who haven't joined a class should visit and see for themselves how enjoyable the association is with these nice people and, actually, what fun it is to improve one's knowledge of the Czech language.

eZECH CLASSES AT CAMERON, TAYLOR, AND TEMPLE Temple Junior College will offer Czech language and cultural heritage courses at three locations in Central Texas during the coming fall semester.

Day and night Czech classes will be offered on the Temple campus.

Only night classes will be offered at the extension teaching center in Taylor and Cameron.

Persons who are interested in taking Czech classes should contact the Director of Admissions and Records, Temple Junior College, Temple, Tx 76501 (817-7739961).

Registration for Temple day classes will be Monday and Tuesday, August 23 and 24. Registration for Temple night classes will be on Thursday evening, August 26.

All TJC Czech classes devote considerable time to a study of the Czech cultural heritage which is so strongly evident in many parts of Texas.

Since most Americans have become interested in the contributions of ethnic groups to our composite culture, the TJC Czech courses should be considered by everyone, not just persons of Czech descent.

Specific aspects of the Czech cultural heritage studied are Czech history, names, festivals, music, dances, folk songs, organizations, religions, occupations, foods, customs, traditions, and folklore.

The language instructional part of each course emphasizes use of the Czech alphabet to properly pronounce and write Czech words.

Vocabulary building is accomplished by various audio-visual techniques and early conversational exercises. Modern Czech is compared with the older Czech, Moravian, and other dialects found

Organist, Miss Shirl Holder of Liberty Hill, presented a program of prenuptial music. A trio, composed of Mrs. Jimmy Holmes of Liberty Hill, sister of the bridegroom, Mrs. Joseph Richey of Austin and Wendell McLeod of Liberty Hill sang "0 Perfect Love" and "The Wedding Prayer."

Given in marriage by her father, the bride chose a formal gown of white lutesong and chiffon. The empire-styled goim, fashioned with a scooped neckline and butterfly sleeves, was highlighted with pearl-centered daisies. The A-line skirt, which ended in a deep ruffle and swept into a chapel-length train, was enhanced with English lace and hand-beaded pearls.

The three-tiered fingertip veil of bridal illusion was trimmed with English lace and pearls a.an attached to a crown of lutesong and chiffon adorned with pearl-centered daisies.

The bride carried a cascade bouquet of baby blue carnations, white roses and baby's breath, tied with streamers of white ribbon and attached to a small Bible. Her jewelry consisted of a diamond drop necklace, and mall pearl drop earrings.

Mr. and Mrs. Adolph and Frances Kocian of Moo/ton, were married May 6, 1919 in Praha, Texas. They celebrated their 57th year of marriage this year Mr. Kocian will be celebrating his 85th birthday and Mrs. Kocian will be celebrating her 82nd birthday this year. They are the parents of Hugo H. 17 LODGE NO. 107, FLORESVILLE HOSTS DISTRICT VII YAD, JULY 25, 1976

Counselors DISTRICT II YOUTH COUNSELOR Here is a report on our District II Youth Camp and our fall district meeting.

Our camp was attended by 137 youth with an increase of about 6 youth from last year. We had a total of 167 at meal time which included all leaders, assistants, chaperones, life guards, wranglers, etc. We had two SPJST youth who worked for three different district camps and they were Chuck Schwartzkopf, Jr., and Jimbo Hafner.

We appreciate the men being interested in helping our young people. We also had three Leadersin-Training who helped out at one of our camp and they were all willing to help in every way they were asked. A big thank you to these fine Leaders-in-Training. We all would like to thank the local youth leaders, assistants and the' chaperones for their unselfish willingness to go to camp and help take care and look after all of these young people. If your child attended camp please take the time to thank your local lodge leader, her assistant, or the chaperones who help to keep your children safe during their time at camp and while the youth are' having a good time. I certainly would like to thank each and everyone of them for their time and patience and their help; also their loss of sleep and their devotion in helping to try to keep these youngsters safe.

Thanks again to everyone who helped in any way to make our camp a success.

Our fall meeting, which was held Sunday, August 8th at Lodge No. 74, Lovelady, was well attended.

We were indeed delighted to have two full bus loads of members, mostly from Lodge 80, Holland, and sponsored by Lodge' 80 in Holland.

From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS It has been too long since• I have written a letter but I suppose I am like most mothers, once school starts I will be able to function again.

We at Lodge No. 84 have enjoyed the summer very much. We started out with a really nice field day, and then later in June we attended District III YAD. We are all very proud of our winners. We are also very proud of the fact that our Group Talent has won again for the third time in a row. I would like to comment on how long and hard all of these kids have worked toward YAD Good luck at State.

In July I was fortunate, I think, to attend my first District III Youth Camp at Val Verde. I would like to say that if anyone has any pictures of me at camp, please get rid of them. Actually I am just kidding, riding on the back end of a horse for three days did a lot for my fraternal attitude. I would like to compliment the girls in my cabin, they really made me feel at home. How lucky can I be.

On July 31st this past month we attended the District III Royalty contest in Ennis. It was a lovely day. Everyone of the contestants did an outstanding job and we would all like to extend our congratulations to the winners. We were very proud of our entries for king and queen. We here at Lodge 84 thought they were both excellent. They were Chris Mandak and her duchess Lisa Reznik, and Randy Petr and his duke, Richard Andreason. We also enjoyed Sister Helen Oates as MC. Our monthly youth club meeting for the Juniors was August 16, at 7:30. Afterward we were to make crafts for our mother lodge's bazaar in September, and then prepare for the Moravian Bes-

eda and May Pole which we will perform at the State Fair in October.

SNOOK SPJST YOUTH SPONSOR COUNTRY STORE The youth members are sponsoring a country store Sunday, August 22nd from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Snook SPJST Hall, Snook. Items such as homecanned vegetables, homemade noodles, jellies, honey, craft items, stuffed pillows, macrame basket hangers, greenery, and many other items.

Also, the firemen will have barbecue from 11 to 1; cake auction from 1 to 3:30, and a dance from 4 until 8 p.m.

LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX I just want everyone to know that this year was my first year to go to camp. I didn't really want to go, but decided to go and check it out, and I wouldn't take anything for the experience.

We had so much fun horseback riding, swimming, making things; we were busy doing something all the time and the time flew by.

Thanks for everything, all the new friends, the meals, chaperones, cooks, and most of all, just being a member of Lodge 13, for making all this possible.

Our booths at the SPJST Feast July 25th were a big success and everyone seemed to have had a real good time and worked hard.

We were reminded to make a vase or something to enter in the contest at our August 15th meeting.

LODGE NO 66, WACO Dear Members: There was a marvelous turnout at the swimming party August 6th.

The monthly youth club meeting was held August 8th at 2 p.m.. The meeting was presided over by Pattie Stanislav and she led us in the pledge.

The roll was called by Cindy Kofnovec.

The treasurer's report was omitted due to balances not received.

We had two visitors: Damon and Denaria Rogers.

It was decided to have an ice cream supper August 20th at 7 p.m.

Everyone, please come. There will be pizza, cake and homemade ice cream. We will have other activities to work on, too.

Remember August 29th and everyone come to State TAD in Temple. It will be an event you will not forget.

Be sure to bring your aluminum cans to the next meeting and remember that some cans are not aluminum.

The' youth club sent sympathy cards to the Slenk and Faust families, get-well cards to Mrs. Faye Beckman, thank-you cards to Mrs. Lydia Mae Faust and Yvonne Kovar for taking cars to camp; and thinking-of-you cards to elderly members of Snook.

Old business was State YAD, August 29, at Temple.

New business was the Country Store on Sunday, August 22, 1976.

Each youth club member is asked to bring at least three or more items for the Country Store such as home-canned vegetables, craft items, homemade noodles, jellies, honey, macrame basket hangers, and greenery or whatever you want to. The Country Store will be at the Annual Fireman's Barbecue.

Bring your Country Store' items and your tickets and money to the hall on Saturday, August 21, 1976, at 3:30 p.m. to set-up the store.

Activity for the month of August is a swimming party, but the date isn't set yet.

Fraternally, James Faust (8-9-76) Reporter — SPJST — LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE Dear Readers, Sunday, July lath, our youth club traveled to Victoria to help them host the annual District VI YAD. The sun was shining and sq were the faces of all people present.

This year's YAD was a very successful one for our youth club. We have six 1st place winners going to state. They are: Melissa Holy (6-9) Home Arts Kim Drozd (10-12) Hobby Kits Mark Sevcik (10-12) Constructed Items Arlene Zak (13-14) Home Arts Annie Marie Zabransky (15-17) Handicraft and Individual Talent.

Winning 2nd place from our youth club were: Jean Zak (10-12) Hobby Kits and Tommy Holy (6-9) Pictorial Arts.

Our youth club placed second in Senior Group Talent.

Our youth leader, Sister Helen Zabransky, placed third as Youth Leader of the Year in our district.

Our queen contestant, Annie Marie Zabransky, won 1st runner-up in Royalty. Her duchess was Melissa Holy.

We are very proud of the! fact that our youth club placed 1st as Youth Club of the Year in District VI. As president of this youth club I would like to thank Youth Leader Helen ZabranskY, Asst. Youth Leader Marlyn Seveik, all the YC members, and most of all, the YC parents and grandparents for helping us reach our goal. The honor is just as much yours as it is the club's.

Individual point winners in our lodge were: Junior Division — 1st Laurie Chudej, 2nd -- Kim Drozd; 3rd — Mark Sevcik; Senior Division 1st -- Annie Marie Zabransky, 2nd -- Arlene Zak, 3rd — Kenny Bevelk.

July 31st our youth club had a bike hike from Asst. YL Marlyn Sevcik's home to Vsetin. We again had 100% attendance. Even the YC parents enjoyed riding. The ride' was hot, but fun. At our destination we cooled off by eating delicious homemade ice cream, cookies, cereal, chips, and cupcakes.
