JUNE 2, 1916

FROM THE EDITOR'S DEA In the May 19th, 1976 edition we wrote: Every convention has given us some experience and has taught us something, as well as showing us some of the mistakes we make and our last one in 1972 was no exception. Since our 1976 XXIInd Convention is upon us in the true sense of the expression it is well that we review some of the mistakes made in our last one, and, frankly, could and should have been avoided. First, it must be stated that yours truly was n&t a delegate and did not have the privilege of using the microphone, until the last day of the convention (Thursday morning), when a motion was made, seconded acid passed that the editor have the same privileges as SL officers,\who are not delegates (Article 16 (a) and (c). Many delegates Will recall that as is stated on pa*e 24 of the Convention Proceedings, I could not question some of the 'things that were un= der discussion. When we review the actions prepared prior to the last convention and then actect upon, we find that, to a great extent, the Supreme Lodge proposals revealed that the SL was too concerned with appointing too many officers in our Society and rather ill-prepared in some other cases. Here some will be tempted to say: "Well, hindsight is better than foresight." Yes,

TWO PEOPLE Two people, smiling, holding hands, To give to me my life. Two people, loving, being with each other, To help me understand how to live. Two people, believing, Together they did it for me. Two people, knowing, sharing, Through the easy time, they are always here. Two people, doing, as one Through the difficult times, they never leave. Two people, wonderful, caring, Mom and dad, my parents. —Your children that is true, however, let us be honest and admit that hindsight and review of it prepares us much better for the actions we take in the future. Now let's review what took place: The proposals were: to combine the offices of the secretary and the treasurer into one office, and further, that the legal advisor, the editor, the publisher, the medical examiner, and the district youth counselors all be appointed. (These were reported to be unanimously accepted proposals by the SL body, however, our information is that they were by majority vote only.) Just before the convention the proposal to appoint the legal advisor

was dropped by the SL. The merger of the secretary and the treasurer offices passed, however, the work load has increased in this office, naturally. The proposal to appoint the editor, publisher, and district youth counselors failed; the appointment of the medical examiner passed. The SL also proposed a group hospitalization plan for the Supreme Lodge employees and the convention accepted that. In early 1973 a referendum was sent out that the hospitalization plan was not acceptable and had to be modified; the delegates accepted. Then in early 19ri4 this referendum went out: Referendum — To All Delegates To The XXIst Convention: You will recall that in the XXIst Convention the remuneration to the chief medical examiner was set at $3.50 per each application examined. . . Despite intensive searches by the Supreme Lodge, and acting under the convention provisos, we have been unable to secure a chief medical examiner to examine our medical applications at the fee set by the convention. . . . We are, therefore, asking the delegates to grant the Supreme Lodge the authority to appoint a chief medical examiner at a fee mutually agreeable to him and the Supreme Lodge . .. etc. The question of the medical examiner will probably come up
