ROM THE EDITOR' DESK NOTICE, DELEGATES — The XXIInd Convention Planning Committee has requested that we print the following information: If any delegate calls for reservations to any of the motels we had listed in our January 28th, 1976 issue (front page and page 2), etc., please mention that you are a delegate to the SPJST Convention or you may be informed that they have 'no vacancies," because some of them are reserving rooms for the week of June 13 for SPJST delegates. Please keep this in mind! * * We have just received information that another aged member of our SPJST, Sister Anna Vojkuvka of Haskell, reached the ripe age of 96 on March 1, 1976 and, therefore, her policy endowed and she received her insurance while still living. She is a member of Lodge Pokrok Haskell and lives in a rest home in Haskell. District IV Director Stanley Broz announced this at the District IV meeting. All of our senior citizens are certainly recognized by our Society for their long, faithful years of service to our SPJST. * * Sunday, April 25th we attended the District III meeting at Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth. When we arrived, before noon, there was a nice crowd gathered and we immediately bought our dinners, consisting of delicious roast beef and appropriate vegetables, pastries, drinks,

Proverbs, XXXI, 28 etc. The cooks are to be commended for this. Time was rushing by, however, there was time to greet Many of our long-time and new member friends.

At 1 p.m. District III President Johnnie Gaidusek convened the meeting and conducted the meeting in good style, having to shift the agenda, where necessary, to meet the specified times which had been set aside for the Miss SPJST contests in talent and later their speech presentations. All the afVicers accounted for themselves1 very well.

The District III officers' committees and various reports were good and brief. Reports from the SL offices and others were rather brief also and, naturally, • appreciated by those in attendance.

Of course, the highlight of the afternoon was the tense anxiety preceding the announcement of the Miss SPJST of District III from among the six lovely contestants.

It turned out to be Sister carol Lamas of Lodge No. 130, Dallas, and, as is usual, a few tears of happiness glistened in her eyes. The district meetings for spring, 1976, are over and now the anticipated wait for Wednesday, June 16th at the convention is here for our seven lovely and talented contestants: Miss SPJST! Good luck and health to all of you and may the best one win. Remember, there are NO real losers!

One thing that occurred and was certainly appreciated and welcomed by all present was the presentation of plaques of appreciation for the many years of loyal work with the youth of District III to past District III Youth Counselor Wilma Nesuda and past Assistant District III YO Rosemarie I3anik.. They both certainly deserved their recognition by our District III! Photos of the various aspects of the entire afternoon appear in this issue. During the adult meeting, the District III Youth Club met and conducted their business meeting.

In the last couple of Texas Fraternal Congresses, officials of two fellow fraternals have remarked about the activities and interest of our youth in our affairs in our SPJST. One stated: "I read your

Vettnik continuously and am amazed at the amount of youth letters in it and the activities going on in the lodges. By the business-like letters of some of the youth, you certainly are bringing up future officers for your lodges and society."

Yes, I have to agree, our youth certainly can carry on their business affairs in a business-like manner. May they keep up the good work. quite frankly, this writer learned much of parliamentary procedures, etc.,. by attending adult SPJST and farmers' group meetings as a youth and will never regret doing so. And our youth generally stand out as wellbehaved,also. Letters in our Vestnik attest to that fact from time to time.

The Lodge No. 35, Elk membership is known for devoting much enthusiasm and support for their members, be it the youth or whatever endeavor. April 25th they proved that again by chartering a bus to attend the District III meeting and brought a busload of their members to the session. * * Every day is Mother's Day. Mothers are the architects and builders of all humanity. When mothers are no longer needed, history will cease and time will be no more.

Somewhere it must have been written that the virtues of the mothers shall be visited on their children as well as the sins of the fathers.

If universal peace is ever achieved it will be the inspiration of mothers and the principles they have so long upheld which cause it. Happy Mather's Day to all you mothers!

Report was made that youth attendance and participation is increasing in that the current quarterly attendance was 719.

It was agreed that the raising of the per diem to youth leaders for attending the youth leaders training class from $12.50 to $15 should be considered in the 1977 changes.

It was reported that District III wish to have an additional training class and authorization for usual remuneration was asked.

After discussion, it was agreed that this item be brought up when rules for the year are brought up for consideration and change in the January 1977 meeting.

Report was made that District Youth Counselors discussed a twoday meeting to draft a handbook on duties and responsibilities for youth leaders, especially for the benefit on newly appointed youth leaders. Several board members spoke highly in favor of such a handbook to be prepared by SYD Massey.

The office of the state youth director was authorized to proceed with preparation of a Youth Leaders' Handbook.

The youth leaders retreat at Val Verde was reportedly very good and definitely a success.

Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska stated that we should extend our compliments to Sister Massey, Brother Tom Caraway and Sister Maxine Pavliska, who represented the SPJST on the board of the Longhorn Recreational Laboratory (LRL) as well as all of those from the SPJST who taught at LRL and participated in the youth leaders retreat.

CONVENTION ARRANGEMENTS -- The physical arrangement of the banquet hall for the Wednesday night banquet and Miss SPJST Contest was reported and discussed.

A motion was adopted authorizing SYD Massey •to set up and arrange the banquet hall to the best of her ability.

Brother Otto Hanus, chairman of the Convention Planning Committee and Brother Silas Smith, member of that committee gave a status report to the body on the convention entertainment plans.

Several board members made suggestions but no formal action was taken.

NATIONAL FRATERNAL CONGRESS FRATERNAL QUESTIONNAIRE -- It was reported that the local lodges have been requested to complete a fraternal questionnaire listing time and money spent on fraternal endeavors. The ixnportance of a local lodge completing this fraternal questionnaire was emphasized in that it is very important that this information be provided to the National Fraternal Congress for their use in combating legislation adverse to all Fraternal Societies.

RECORDING THE CONVENTION PROCEEDINGS — The feasibility of tape recording the convention proceedings had been discussed previously, but no decision had been made. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska read a letter from a recording service proposing to record the convention, gavel to gavel.

After due consideration, a motion was adopted to authorize tape recording of the convention proceedings, gavel to gavel, and that this would be the only authorized and official tape of the Convention proceedings.

Discussion turned to the manner by which minutes of the conven tion would be recorded. Several members of the Supreme Lodge stated that they felt that the minutes should be recorded in much the same manner as before by two teams of secretaries so that the minutes could be read back to the delegates for approval from time to time It was agreed that the tape recording of the proceedings would merely be a back-up of the method used in the past conventions. It was agreed by common consent that the minutes of the XXIInd Convention would be recorded by two teams of secretaries in accordance with the precedent set in the preceding conventions.

CONVENTION PREPARATION — Report was made on the status of preparation of delegate packets and various items for the convention.

It was also reported that the secretary-treasurer had written all delegates who did not appear to be in compliance with the by-laws, because they had not attended a

VESTNtK sufficient number of lodge meetings or for whatever reason, advising them that there is the possibility they may not be seated at the convention.

He explained that the Supreme Lodge does not have the power to determine who will or will not be seated at a convention since the convention is the sole determiner of who will be seated, but he felt that such delegates should at least be informed of the problems they might encounter.

MISCELLANEOUS — SecretaryTreasurer Mikeska reported he had been present during portions of all of the By-Law Committee meetings and that he was very much impressed by the committee. He reported that the committee is very thorough in its deliberations and appears to be giving diligent and fraternal consideration to the proposed changes.

He concluded his report by thanking each of the Supreme Lodge members for the excellent cooperation everyone had extended to him.

Vice President Hejny reported on the following: SALES — Record sales of $4,459,275 were reported on 1,087 applications.

It was announced that we had exceeded One Hunderd Million of life insurance in force.

NEW LODGES — He reported that a new lodge was organized in Burleson, in District III, with some 70 members and guests present for the lodge organization. The meeting was held in St. Ann's Catholic Church and appreciation was extended to the church and Father Leon Flusche. Director Pokladnik stated that he was highly impressed by the manner in which the local group conducted the entire organizational meeting.

LETTERS — (1) Letter read from Sister Norma Andel thanking the board for her being allowed to attend the DSR banquet and for having had the opportunity to participate in the recent DSR Seminar.

(2) Letter from Sales Representative Helen Hegwood of Lodge 88 expressing gratitude for the plaque, money award and ring given for her sales efforts in 1975.

REQUEST FOR LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE STATIONERY — Vice President Hejny presented a

request for stationery from a local lodge sales representative.

It was agreed that the Supreme Lodge officers are to adopt a suitable letterhead to be available for use by sales representatives and local lodges, the cost to be borne by the individuals or lodges.

REINSURANCE — Vice President Hejny questioned if it would be agreeable with the board to enter into an additional reinsurance contract with another reinsurance company on a trial basis.

After discussion, it was agreed that the vice president, with approval of the other Supreme Lodge officers, be authorized o enter into a reinsurance contract with another reinsurance company.

SPJST EMPLOYEES' RETIREMENT PLAN -- The retirement plan report with the Labor Department was prepared by our actuary and filed by the vice president and financial secretary.

Vice President Hejny is the president and Financial Secretary Zabcik is the secretary of the Retirement Plan Committee. Information was given that government approval of our retirement plan was being sought and a letter should be sent to each participant inform.ing them of this fact. It was so agreed.

The board was informed that our actuary was working on mandatory actions needed to comply with the Employees Retirement Income Security Act. State Field Manager Silas Smith's Report -SFM Smith was out of town with his field manager's duties. His written report was distributed and it outlined in detail his duties and travel during the past quarter.

Financial-Secretary Zabeik reported on the following: FINANCIAL STATEMENT — He presented his written report and referred to the statement of receipts and disbursements and discussed several items.

TRAVELS — Report was made on a trip to Lodge 153 to give assistance to the local officers and on three other trips during the quarter on various Society business.

He stated that he was pleased to learn on a recent trip to Inez that Lodge 32 has an active building fund.

NEW LODGES -- Report was

6 made that the records are kept by his department in connection with new lodges in process until they are organized. He agreed to meet with the officers of new Lodge 180 if necessary,.

Legal Adviser Lesikar reported on the following: LOANS IN PROCESS — Detailed information was given on 38 loans in process aggregating $1,127,946.16.

MEETINGS ATTENDED — Report was made that he attended three meetings of the By-Law Committee and eight various meetings at the Home Office.

MISCELLANEOUS — There was no litigation pending at this time.

The body was informed that we had one foreclosure in process.

Legal Adviser Lesikar stated that he had conferred with the president and secretary-treasurer a number of times regarding various legal questions on a number of matters.

He stated he had given opinions and met with officers of several lodges concerning several matters and detailed reports were given on a number of matters.

He also stated that he gave opinions on three separate death claims where there were legal problems obstructing settlement.

PERPETUAL CHARTER — He recommended that we attempt to get a perpetual charter for the Society.

Legal Adviser Lesikar was authorized to take the necessary actions and confer with the State Board of Insurance on the procedure involved in applying for a perpetual 'charter, and he was asked to take appropriate action and present the matter to the convention.

Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska stated he was very well pleased with the response received from Legal Adviser Leonean Director Pokladnik stated he felt we had the finest and best Legal Department we have ever' had and several board members responded with similar complimentary statements.

Editor Sefcik, who had been present for the afternoon session, spoke briefly. He said he enjoyed being present at the meeting and he was invited by members of the. SL to attend as often and long as possible.

Recess for the day was taken at

VtSTNIK 5:20 p.m. and the meeting was called back to order April 8, at 9 a.m.

It was agreed that the next regular audit and Supreme Lodge meeting would begin July 12th, VESTNIK PUBLISHING BIDS FOR CONVENTION — Pursuant to request of the Publication Committee, the members of the Supreme Lodge formulated a list of items they felt should be included in a set of specifications that could be sent to the prospective bidders. A list of nine prospective publishers, including three equipped to set Czech type, was to be sent to the Publication Committee.

President Morris reported that Publication Committee Chairman Ed Mazanec phoned him and informed him that there was an omission in the minutes of the Publication Committee meeting in that the Vestnik bids were to be opened at the convention.

After thorough discussion, on motion duly made and seconded, the suggestion of items as agreed upon during the meeting to be included in a set of specifications to be sent to prospective publishers was accepted.

President Morris read the following letters: (1) a letter from Jimmy and Dotty Roach of Lodge 177 in which they were highly complimentary of the SPJST youth program and training.

(2) a letter from Evelyn Horelka, a new youth leader from Lodge 32, in which she was very complimentary of the recent training class.

(3) a letter from Pat Tomastik, youth leader of Lodge 177, informing the Supreme Lodge how interesting and good the recent training class proved to be.

(4) a letter from Mary Heisler, DYC of District IV, stating that the recent training class was "one of the best."

(5) a letter front a representative of another Texas based fraternal related to the hearings being held over the state in connection with efforts by others that would require licensing of sales representatives of fraternal societies. President Morris reported on the on-going developments regarding licensing of fraternal society agents.

T. Orsak, Czech instructor at Texas A&M, stating that there is one student who would like to go to Czechoslovakia and participate in the Czech language program and would like to use the remainder of the SPJST donation to TAMU for this purpose. It was agreed on motion by Director Pokladnik, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska to allow use of the fund for the purpose requested.

Vice President Hejny questioned President Morris if he wanted to read a letter he had from the ByLaw Committee addressed to the Supreme Lodge officers and directors and he stated he would prefer to read the letter in the July meeting.

There was a lengthy discussion on the need of our Society to allocate more money for charitable and worthwhile causes if we expect to retain our tax exempt status. We must donate a sufficient amount of money to worthwhile causes to justify our tax exemption. It was consensus opinion that every member of the board be encouraged to appear before the convention Salary and Donation Committee encouraging the convention to set aside a sizable amount of approved charitable purposes. It was generally agreed that $50,000 annually would appear to be an appropriate figure, subject to study by our actuary.

SPJST DOCUMENTARY FILM — The Documentary Film Committee appointed during the last meeting reported on its findings and recommended that consideration be given that a slide production be considered as an alternative to a film.

It was understood that consideration could be given to the doctrmentary film at a later date pending the outcome of the slide production.

The members of the Supreme Lodge were shown some slides taken at the Home Office as an example of what could be done.

It was decided that slides of convention pictures would be viewed by the board in the July meeting and a decision could be made at that time on how to proceed with the project.

CLOSING COMMENT'S OF THE DIRECTORS — Director Kubena stated that plans for the convention appeared to be progressing well.

Wednesday, May 5, 1976 He stated that he thought it is not an improvement for our system to set up additional committees as proposed by some and said he felt that three or five-member committees are generally better functioning committees. He said according to proposals we will have elected 56 committeemen, if the proposals are approved.

He said that a vacancy in a district director's position should be best filled by the district delegates in lieu of electing a substitute director.

He discussed the By-Law Committee's recommended change in Article 40 (b) of our by-laws and expressed his opinion that he was not in favor of raising the amount of a loan application that could be approved by one or two directors to as high an amount as had been recommended.

He concluded by briefly discussing various items that would be beneficial to the Society.

Direetor Vitek said he wholeheartedly agrees that smaller committees function more effectively than large committees.

He stated that he felt it was important that consideration be given to increase our charitable donations to help us preserve our tax exempt status.

(President Morris stated we should all resolve to concentrate on seeing that action is taken to increase our charitable contributons.)

He stated that he has enjoyed the cooperation extended to him and was pleased with the harmony in the Supreme Lodge and complimented the Legal Department.

He concluded with other brief appropriate remarks.

The board extended congratulations to Director Vitek on the occasion of the birth of a grandson, Jonathan Allen Kubala, born April 5, 1976.

Director Pokladnik invited all to the District III meeting on April 25th.

He spoke of the activities of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) and the Fraternal Section of NFCA of which he is chairman.

He suggested that someone send an article to the Fraternal Monitor magazine on the record amount of insurance written by the Society

last year and mention the fact that we have over One Hundred Million insurance in force.

He pointed out the importance of our considering charitable contributions and he felt we are moving in the right direction.

He emphasized that in the convention, we should all give the facts if a question is asked, and we should not be afraid to come forward with an answer.

The need for having compact decisive committees was discussed.

He reported on several matters in District III and concluded by thanking the members of the Supreme Lodge for the cooperation extended to him.

He mentioned that the Ennis Polka Festival was set for May 1-2.

Director Broz invited all to the District IV meeting April 25th. He spoke in favor of future consideration and the need for a slide production about the SPJST that could be shown to various groups over the state.

He spoke briefly about the convention and concluded by extending best wishes to all.

Director Hilsher said he was pleased with the outcome of our deliberations and felt that much of value had been accomplished during this meeting.

He reported in detail on progress and his work within District V in several areas and discussed his plans on work yet to be done. He said he felt it important for a director to maintain close contact with the lodges within the district which he enjoys and has done.

He concluded by briefly discussing various matters of interest and importance.

Director Vanek discussed his work within District VI. He complimented SYD Dorothy Massey on her work in District VI and he spoke of the fine cooperation of the lodges in the district.

Report was made on the new sales representatives appointed in District VI. He spoke of progress made in the district and said that Lodge No. 32 had set up a building fund which could put the lodge in a position to acquire a lodge building.

He said he appreciated the opportunity to work with the Supreme Lodge and that he enjoyed representing the district.

Director Veselka discussed the fact that his outlook on various matters is certainly different since he has become more involved with the Supreme Lodge.

He said he is very much interested in doing all that he possibly can accomplish for the Society.

Report was made on his various endeavors in District VII working among the lodges. The difficulties of lodges not having their own buildings were discussed.

The board was informed that a new lodge was in the process of organization in New Braunfels.

Brother Jos. Slavik was reportedly soliciting new members and had already secured a good number.

He spoke of his plans and work with several lodges and said that it sometimes takes a lot of persuasion to reactivate inactive lodges.

He was complimentary of the manner in which the Supreme Lodge works as a team. He invited all to the District VII meeting on April 11th.

MISCELLANEOUS — Vice President Hejny spoke of being the senior member of the officers and he is pleased to state we have a board that is devoted, cooperative and the members apply themselves to the needs of the Society and that we have one of the best boards that he has had the opportunity to work with.

President Morris said that he had quite a bit of interest in reactivating Lodge No. 141 near Sealy and a meeting on the matter was planned in the very near future with the members of the lodge and the district director.

He said that the third Annual Conference of Students and Teachers of the Czech language had their annual gathering set for Saturday, April 10th., at the SPJST Lodge No. 29 hall.

President Morris related an invitation to any Supreme Lodge members to attend the Convention Planning Committee meeting and chorus rehearsal at Linden Hall on April 9th.

He concluded by wishing all well.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members, We felt a deep loss when we heard that Brother Stanley Valcik passed away after having a heart attack. He was attending Texas A & M University, where he was quite active in the Czech Club, and would have received his degree in May. We knew Brother Valcik for quite a long time, but we did not know about the many medals he received for his distinguished service for his country. I think there are many others who also do not know this, so I am listing some of the outstanding medals he received: Distinguished Flying Cross with 1 oak leaf cluster, Presidential Unit Citation, Air Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with 4 bronze oak leaf clusters.

Brother Valcik retired as a lieutenant colonel.

Brother Valcik attended many functions at the lodge. The last one he attended was the beautiful Czech play, "Dve Svatby," written by his father, the late Brother Stephen Valcik, and presented by.

Hlahol Dramatic Club in his memory.

A military memorial service was held for Brother Valcik on Wednesday, April 21st, at the Veterans Chapel at the Houston National Cemetery.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes to his wife Mary Ann, sons David and Dan, mother Helen Valcik, sister Helen Valcik, and her family and brother John and his family.

I have always tried to represent both the District and the Supreme Lodge honestly, equitably, and to the best of my ability.

Wednesday, May 5, 1076 LODGE NO , HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters: The April meeting was called to order by President Louis Hanus at 7:30 p.m. on April 12, 1976. Brother Gary Ermis presented the colors and led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

It was reported that the following brother and sister had passed away since the previous meeting: Leona Wind and Thomas Stephens.

The members stood in respect of our departed members.

The minutes of the meeting for the month of March were read and approved by the membership.

Correspondence was acknowledged from Brother Eddie Schiller, Frank Tymel, Brother and Sister John Zemko and the families of Bartholomew A. Valouch, Frank Zelesky and Weldon Othold.

At that time, the floor was open for nominations for our additional delegate. Sister Ann Urba,novsky was elected to serve in this capacity.

The following brothers and sisters were presented fifty-year membership pin and certificate in a ceremony led by President Hanus: John Broz, Olga Elsik, Her/nine Hanka, Robert F. Kachtik, Julius Kilnar, A. A. Lesikar, Wilma Powell, T Mlle Schmidt, Irene F. Slovacek, Wilma Tomasek, Vladimir Winkler, Ruby Cernosek and Frances Gracey. A cake was also brought in to honor the occasion which was enjoyed by the membership following the meeting.

The following brothers and sisters were reported on the sick list: Ruth Bartulla, Frank Tymel and Helen Walker. s President Harms reminded the members to attend the Czech Fest to be held in Rosenberg on April 23 thru 25. Our Choral Group and Czech Concert Orchestra will perform at this activity on April 24.

Youth Leader Ruth Duncan reported on past and upcoming youth activities. The youth will have their annual Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday. The kitchen will be open and a dance will follow in the afternoon. All members were urged to attend.

Sister Tillie Helmcamp reported for the delegates of our lodge. At each meeting of delegates the proposed changes as printed in the

V t TN 1K Vestnik, are discussed. It was announced that the next delegate meeting would be April 21, at 7 p.m. Pictures were taken of the delegates and alternates at that time.

Favorable financial reports were presented on behalf of the various committees.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Harley Cox announced the upcoming events at the lodge and encouraged the members to participate. He also thanked the committee for working so diligently to make March a good month and appreciated the support of the membership.

The annual Clean-Up Day will be held Sunday, May 2. All members are urged to attend because much work needs to be done.

For the Dramatic Club, Sister Naomi Kostorn announced that much, attention is being given to the presentation for the Bicentennial Celebration at this time For the Choral Group, Sister Evelyn Vornsand announced that the group will perform at the Czech Fest on April 24. Several new members have joined the group and an invitation was extended to all members who enjoy singing to join the group.

District Director A. L. Hilsher thanked the members who recently attended the District V meeting.

District Youth Counselor Richard Wahlberg announced upcoming youth activities; namely YAD to be held August 1 at Lodge 88, and camp, August 6-9.

Historian Frances Olexa presented the members with an interesting and informative history of our lodge covering the years 1935 through 1937.

For unfinished business, Brother Larry Pflughaupt announced that the pictures of the officers and board of trustees are ready.

Orders will be taken for pictures of various activities on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month.

Several reports were made on the Rosenberg festival; everyone who attended enjoyed themselves immensely, food and music was great and everyone seemed to be glad that they attended. 12 LODGE NO. 178, LONGVIEW Dear Members and Friends, The regular meeting of Pinewood Heritage Lodge 178 was held Wednesday night, April 14th in the Brown Bottle Room of the Schlitz Brewing Co. Presiden t. Hugo Kocian called the meeting to order.

The members then recited the pledge of allegiance.

Vice President Gene Hablinsld asked for a moment of silence in tribute to our departed members.

President Kocian introduced our guests: District Director Sid Pokladnik and his lovely wife, Justine.

We were most pleased to meet Mrs. Poldadnik and have her attend our meeting.

A motion was made that we dispense with the reading of the min utes of the March meeting so that we have time enough for this meeting. A second and vote, and the minutes were not read.

Treasurer Loma Harris read her report. It was accepted as read.

She presented the certificate of deposit to President Kocian. Members voted that the lodge rent a safe deposit box for important documents, such as this CD certificate. The treasurer will rent the box and keep one key.

Financial Secretary Marie Wiesner reported two new members: Colleen Howell and Eddy Don Brown.

District Direetor Pokladnik stated that some lodges present the names of all new applicants at a meeting. This makes a record of all applicants to the lodge.

There was no report presented from Fund Raising Committee No. 1.

The Cheering Committee had no report to make.

President Kocian stated that Don Koble recovered very well from surgery and his medication treatment is very promising.

Youth Leader Floyd Snider reported that he is making plans for the youth activities. The telescope project is still in the works. He IS also looking into the possibility of raising funds by collecting papers and magazines to sell to a re-cycling center. Brother Snider is planning, to take his vacation to coincide with youth camp week. All youth who became members before October 31, 1975, are eligible for camp.

District III Director Sid Poklad.)nik stated that Lodge 178 was Q. much-dreamed-of idea that is ACV a reality. After a brief history Of the SPJST and how it came to be Brother Pokladnik stressed the importance of everyone carrying his own weight. He quoted Abe Lincoln's statement, "In unity there is strength."

He congratulated the Beseda dancers. This would be something to teach the youth.

He reminded the members of the convention in Waco in June. If anyone has ideas and suggestions for the by-laws, he should express them to the delegates. President Kocian thanked Brother Pokladnik for speaking to us.

After some discussion about the use of our lodge land it was voted that a land development committee be appointed by President Kocian and Vice President Hablinski. The volunteer committee is composed of Wye Alvis, Joe Howell, Arthui4 Wiesner, Bernard Budnick and Floyd Snider.

This committee will not interfer with the Building Committee. Its function will be to make the land usable for outdoor activities. It was suggested that after the boundary lines are visable and permanent and the committee members know the lines, then a sign be posted stating that this is the future home of SPJST Lodge No. 178, Longview.

The meeting was adjourned and everyone enjoyed the social hour and the refreshments brought by Brother Floyd and Sister Gene Snider and the Brawn Bottle Room.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Choral Group sang at the Czech Fest in Rosenberg a couple of weekends ago. The weather was beautiful and the food was good.

The weather, however, got to be pretty warm and there were as lot of sore feet and tired voices by the end of the day. A couple of my friends from school said that they were one of the best groups there that day. Keep up the great work, gang!

As I mentioned last week, Vernon and Clemence Courtney celebrated their 25th anniversary.

What I failed to mention was that her cousin and husband Mr. and Mrs. Edison Rech, celebrated their anniversary on the same day, only 25 years apart. There was an open house held at Mr. and Mrs. Rech's home to celebrate the 25th and 50th wedding anniversaries.

While I was there I was very honored to meet his honor, Judge Chris Cole, as well as the many friends and relatives who wished them well And may the two couples share many more happy years together.

Billy Hoffmann is in St. Joseph's Hospital for rest and some tests; stop by and see him if you get a chance. I'm sad to say that we lost a member this week, Ludwig Kubena, passed away and he is Survived by his wife Christine.

Please remember these two families in your thoughts and prayers this week.

The Birthday Club Sisters business meeting and card party will be held Wednesday, May 12th.

The re-ordered cookbooks shall be coming in before much longer.

Dear MemberS: Our April meeting was called to order by President Frank Parma..

The pledge of allegiance was led by Ms. Parma.

The main topic of discussion in our business centered on final plans for Czech Fest. Sister Pat Parma gave us the financial report that showed our treasury able to support our efforts. Brother Louis Hanus gave us an inspiring talk on the dedication of a few good workers and the need of more members to get involved in the worthwhile project; he pledged his and Lodge 88's support.

The first annual Fort Bend Czech Fest or Czech Fest as it came to be known was held at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds on April 23, 24, and 25. It was a great success as judged by the huge orderly and happy crowd of people who attended. Our concession booth of kolache and strudel was tremendous.

I cannot begin to thank all of our members and friends who donated kolache and strudel or money and work. I will leave myself open to criticism by saying that without the effort of Frank and Pat Parma, Helen Bryson and Bessie Franek, our food booth success would hardly have been possible.

Dear Members and Friends: It is that time of the year again for you to circle the dates of May 14, 15, and 16, and come to Galveston for the Oleander Festival to be held at the Moody Civic Center on 21st Street and Seawall Blvd.

On Friday, May 14th, activities will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 10 p.m.; Saturday, May 15th, the hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturday, May 16th, from 11 a.m. to closing at 6 p.m. This should give you a lovely weekend to spend in Galveston.

Brother Willie Huepers is building a portable booth which will carry out both the Bicentennial and Oleander themes. This activity will be cosponsored by Lodge No. 173, Galveston, and KJT, LaMarquet. Food will be in abundance.

The sisters are preparing 200 dozen kolache, 40 cakes and other pastries. Also 400 pounds of homemade sauerkraut has been prepared. The menu will consist of such goodies as poor boy sandwiches, sausage on a stick, corn on the cab, a plate lunch, kolache, cakes or other pastries, drinks: coffee or tea. Naturally, the sausage will be the very best that Brother Johnny Valusek Can buy.

You remember how good it was the last time.

There will be various activities on the Center Stage of the Moody Civic Center during the three days, such as a Maypole dance, singing by the various Czech groups, accordion music by Jerry Kaluza, and Clarence Fee, and others. The times have not been finalized yet. Those of you who can, please wear your Czech costumes.

Now back to the excerpts from our April meeting. The meeting was called to order by President Alvin J. Sefcik. The pledge of allegiance to the flag was recited by the membership. Roll call of offi-

cers revealed all to be present except Sister Frances Kaluza, asst. youth• leader, and Brother Travis Jarosjewski, Building Fund chmn.

President Sefcik extended a warm welcome to the guests present who were: Brother Alfred Hilsher, District V director; Brother Richard Walhberg, District V youth counselor; Stanley Nolan, Franny Kaluza and baby son Christopher, Anne Garcia, Agnes Devantier, Mr. and Mrs. R. N. Stone and daughter Pattie, Harold Sullivan and two daughters Nickie and Kathy, and Mrs. Clarence Fee. The secretary read the minutes' of the March meeting. There being no additions or corrections, the minutes were accepted as read.

President Sefcik announced that a $1,000 bond had been purchased for the Building Fund and that he would check into the interest rates of earlier bonds held by the lodge.

Resolutions of Sympathy were reported as having been sent in to the Vestnik on Brother Frank H. Beran, Jr, and Sister Tyne Hazlitt Barnette.

Several changes in certificates were reported by the secretary.

Sister Bessie Findley, financial secretary, gave the reports for the months of February and March.

Sister Carmen Odinot, treasurer, stated that her report agreed with same.

Sister Audrey Kaluza, entertainment chairman, presented her report on the progress of the Oleander Festival as given in the first part of this letter. She expressed appreciation for all the good food furnished by the sisters for the pre-Easter dinner with special thanks to Sister J. Watts and the Youth Club for the Easter decorations. Sister Audrey Kaluza also stated that plans were being made to participate in the "On The Strand Festival" to be held June 26 and 27. Further information will be given at a later date.

Alice Burris was welcomed as a new member. We do hope she will become a very active member.

There was no one reported as being ill or confined to the hospital.

If such was not the case, we do wish you a speedy recovery. Please let an officer know if you should become ill or confined.

Under the Best Interest of the Society, President Sefcik reminded us to be thinking about and trying

18 to attend the 22nd SPJST Convention to be held in Waco in June.

Brother Wisher expressed his pleasure at being with us again, and noted that our members were very interested in the happenings of the Society. He further stated that he did not anticipate many changes in the by-laws at the forthcoming convention. As District ✓ director he expressed his desire to help all the lodges in any way he could.

Brother Wahlberg then spoke relating to youth activities planned for the year. He has attended several training centers. The District ✓ YAD is planned for May 22 at Lodge 88, Houston, and camp will be in August. I feel sure his complete program will be printed in the Vestnik.

Sister Judy Watts, youth leader, reported that the youth club had a successful Easter egg hunt. She thanked those who had donated eggs or prizes. There were approximately 25 children present. She asked the mothers to bring them back in May. Sister Watts may be contacted at AC 713, 948-0800 for any information desired about the youth club.

The next meeting was set for the fourth Sunday, May 23rd, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, at 2 p.m.

The secretary distributed the premium refund checks to the members present.

Sister Mary Cordray announced her resignation as secretary, as of May 31, 1976.

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS SOFTBALL TEAM REPORT Dear Brothers and Sisters: Another softball season has begun and here I am with my first report of results of our early games. I have been on a 7-day vacation and a business trip to Chicago and therefore I am a little late with these results.

During the week of April 12th, we entered pre-season DSMA Tournament. We won the first game, lost the second game, 4-1, and lost the third game, 5-4.

We opened league play on Thursday night, April 22nd with a 3 to 2

VtSTN/K win over the Red Bryan Smokehouse team. Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher allowing 3 hits, no walks and 5 strikeouts. Leading hitters were Wiley Beesley and Don Jarma, with a home run and a single each; Dave Ellison had a triple; Lawrence Bonze, had two walks, and Bill Leinberger had a sacrifice hit. This game was played at Kidd Springs Park.

During the weekend of April 23rd we entered the Arlington Tournament and we lost the game Friday night by a forfeit because two of our players arrived too late; and went to the wrong field Saturday morning, April 24th. We played our second game and we lost to Master Muffler from Denton by a score of 3 to 0. Losing pitcher was Ralph Stauss, however, no statistics were kept on the opposing team, but Ralph did pitch a creditable game.

Leading hitters were Albin Vrana, Wiley Beesley, Dave Ellison and Jeff Burton with singles and Don Jarrna had a sacrifice hit. Thus we were eliminated from the tournament with this loSs. We are M a Thursday night league with Red. Bryan's Smokehouse, Bill Utter Ford, and Ford, Bacon and Davis, and we play at Kidd Springs Park in Oak Cliff on Tyler Street.

We finally were placed in a second league and this one will be a toughie — the Dallas City Major League, composed of the five strongest teams, plus our team. We know the competition will be very strong, but we feel this will help our team in the long run. We hope to give a good account of ourselves in this league and gain good experience.

We played our first game in this league Tuesday night, April 27th and this league plays at Samuel Grand No. 1, every Tuesday night.

Our opponent was the City Electric team and we lost a close game, 4 to 2. We committed two errors which allowed 3 unearned runs and thus proved to be our downfall. They scored 3 unearned runs in the third inning and we scored two runs in the fourth, on a hit by Honza and a home run by Dave Ellison. They scored another run, their only earned run, in the fifth inning on a home run and we thought we had another run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but their centerfielder, Bill Leinberger, robbed

Lionel Schulz hurled a very good game allowing only 5 hits, 1 walk and had five strikeouts. Leading hitters were Dave Ellison with a homer, Lawrence Honza with a single and Wiley Beesley had a base-on-balls.

In our Thursday night league at Kidd Springs we played Bill Utter Ford on April 29th. Other games will be: May 6 ® Ford, Bacon and Davis, at 7:15 p.m.; May 13 — Red Bryan's team, 7:15 p.m.

I don't have a schedule as yet on our Tuesday night league but I will put it in my next report.

We invite our members and friends to come out to the game if you want to see some good softball being played.

May I remind our membership and readers that our annual softball team benefit dance will be Saturday night, May 29th, from 8:30 to 12:30, at SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas, 2625 Floyd Street; music by the very popular Johnny Mensik orchestra. Please come out and support the team and have an enjoyable evening. We do need your presence and support, so come and bring a lot of friends with you.

We also want to thank Brother Bob and Helen Oates, Edd Kamas, District Youth Counselor and his lovely daughters, Rita and Carol, for returning to Longview, Sunday, March 28, to help our Beseda dancers put the final touches on the performance of the Moravian Beseda at Teague Park for the Prelude sponsored Bicentennial Fun Festival Saturday, April 10, 1976, and to give instructions to more of our members. We also enjoyed Brother Arnold and Helen Vrla and Sister Kamas' visit here the same day. The youth club and the

Beseda dancers wish to thank the many members who came to see the group perform. It was hard to determine which group enjoyed themselves more, the spectators or the dancers. After listening to the dancers tell about how much fun it was learning the dance, I am sure there will be more of our youth and adult members wanting to learn the different Beseda dances. Along with the fun went long hours of practice. Also, many hours were spent in the making of dance costumes.

Any youth wishing to attend summer camp this summer, please contact one of the youth leaders for information. The camp is free to all full-right members.

We had refreshments of cookies, sandwiches, cake and sodawater.

(Picture by Sister Joann Schwartzkopf) The speaker on children was not only helpful in our youth club problems, but also he had Some real good facts why children act the way they do. With us having four children at home, we found this very helpful.

The crafts and idea exchange were also helpful in giving ideas for contests as well as decorating the home. The idea exchange gave my husband many new approaches to keep the young interested in the youth club.

The point and rule book was a must for all new leaders in our opinion. The outgoing leaders never have the time to ful13r explain all the rules and point system.. The retreat gave all youth leaders a chance to ask questions and learn more about how to get points.

As for the socializing, well it was great. The people were friendly and all in all, fun to be with. Yes, indeed, we enjoyed the youth leaders' retreat.

The Beyersville Mayfete will be held on the second Sunday in May. Our queen will be Becky Swanson. I hope everyone can come and have an enjoyable time.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 28, EAST BERNARD Dear Readers, We held our last meeting on April 4th, •at 1:30 p.m. We recited the pledge and then proceeded with the meeting. After the meeting was adjourned we had a party.

The youth club would like to thank Mrs. Nezval and Mrs. Luquette for bringing treats for the party.

On April 10th the youth club went to a museum in Rosenberg which the club enjoyed.

We had a good turnout at the spring district meeting. We would like to thank Mrs. Nezval and Mrs. Luquette for donating some heartshaped cookies which we sold and a doll which we sold tickets on.

LODGE. NO. 54, WEST Dear Members, I attended the District III meeting and its youth club meeting on 'April 25th at Lodge 1154, Fort Worth. This was my first time to visit their new lodge home and it is a big building with lots of space.

We were excused from the big meeting to hold our club meeting which was held outside. There was a large attendance from different youth clubs and I was glad to see so many of you again, as well as learning and understanding the purpose of a district youth club meeting.

Congratulations to all the district club officers, especially Darlene Zahirniak who was elected district secretary from our lodge.

Darlene is our lodge club president and does a very good job!

I think all the ladies in the Miss SPJST contest were pretty and I enjoyed each one's talent.

Our youth club congratulates Carol Karnes from Lodge 130, Dallas who was crowned Miss SPJST from District III and who will compete at the finals in Waco on June 16th. We also offer our congratulations to the runners-up Cindy Horak (84), first, and Melanie Hamm (66) 2nd; and to all contestants.

The Publicity Poster Contest was also a close one. The seven posters were all pretty and colorful and, I'm sure, hard to judge. Lodge 84 (teens) won 1st place; Lodge 66, Waco, second, and Lodge 130, Dallas, third place.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 103, Flatonia, in behalf of our entire membership wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, WILLIE WALKER, a lifelong resident of the Flatonia community passed away at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 13th m the Renger Memorial Hospital in Hallettkville. He had attained the age of 84 years, 5 months and 10 days.

Rosary was led by Rev. Anthony Matula Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services and Mass were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 14th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Anthony Matula officiating. Interment was in the Flatonia Catholic Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Felix Brunner, Louis Brunner, Herman pile, William (Red) Richter, Johnnie Tupa, and Nolan E. Wagner.

Brother Walker was born near Praha, Texas, on November 3, 1895, the son o f the late William and Mary Walker. Between the age of 3 and 4, he came to live with his foster parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Valenta of the Flatonia community. He and Mr. Valenta worked for a number of years in the horse land mule business. Later they went, into the John Deere tractor business. Following Mr. Valenta's death, Brother Walker took over the business where he stayed until he retired.

He was married to Millie Rosenauer on November 24, 1925. She preceded him in death on October 15, 1963. 13 e was also a veteran of World War I.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 48, Beyersville, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, MRS. AGNES SCHNEIDER, of Rt. 4, Taylor, who died in a local nursing home at the age of 93 years.

Mrs. Schneider was born March 11, 1883 in Schulenburg and had lived in the Taylor area for the past eight years. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Willie Kropp of Thorndale and Mrs. Robert Garrett of Hutto; a son, John Schneider of Taylor; a sister, Mrs. Julia Jalufka of Houston; 10 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Robert Schneider, died in 1968.

Funeral services were held from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taylor with the Rev. Desmond Murphy officiating. Burial was in Taylor City Cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Rosary was recited at the Condra Funeral Home.

Brother Leshikar, a retired farmer, was born in Travis County on November 14, 1886. He was a member of the American Spiritualist Church, and the SPJST lodge.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Sadie Baran, Mrs. Bess Kuhn of Taylor, and Helen Jane Cervenka of Gainesville; a son, Ben Leshikar of Taylor; three sisters, Mrs. Albina Koval*, Mrs. Charlie Hurta, and Mrs. Rosie Slovacek, all of Taylor; a brother, Willie Leshikar, Sr., of Taylor; 10 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Monday, April 26th, from the Condra Memorial Chapel with interment in the City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Fred Seale, Donald Jirasek, W. C. Kolinek, Howard Leshikar, Robert Lee Leshikar, Danny Cervenka and Stephen Kuhn.

Her father was also the first lodge president of our lodge. This pioneer family was well-known. She later moved to Houston where she lived until her death.

"Eating for two" during pregnancy doesn't have to ruin a woman's figure for years afterward," Mrs. Mary Sweeten, a, foods and nutrition specialist, says.

"It's the nutritional quality — not just quantity — of food eaten that makes a healthy baby and mother," she added.

Mrs. Sweeten is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

"A pregnant woman needs approximately 2000 calories each day to provide enough energy to build new tissue in the developing fetus and to support her own increased metabolism. This is about 300 calories a day more than the normal diet provides.

"The most desirable weight gain is usually 22-27 pounds over the nine-month period. Physicians usually recommend a gradual weight gain — from 1.5 pounds per month during the first three months and 0.8 per week during the last six months," the specialist said.

Good nutrition does have a positive effect on the growth and development of the fetus and on the health of the mother during pregnancy and lactation, she added.

"To obtain the best balance of nutrient needs during pregnancy, eat a variety of ordinary foods from the daily four food groups — milk group, meat group, fruit and vegetable group, and bread and cereal group.

"Pregnant women should drink three or more cups of milk group foods, eat two or more servings of at least six ounces of protein-containing meat group foods, and four or more one-half cup servings of fruits and vegetables.

"Also necessary are four or more servings of whole grain or enriched breads or cereals. But the high-calorie foods in the other group — fats and sweets — should be eaten only sparingly during pregnancy to prevent excessive weight gain," she explained.

cialist said that protein is most important for development of the baby's tissues and the enlargement of the mother's body tissues.

"If enough of the energy nutrients, fat and carbohydrates are not present in the mother's diet, then protein will be used for enrgy instead of for building body proteins. About 30 grams more per day than the normal requirement of 75 grams of protein will. be needed during pregnancy," she explained.

Another important nutrient is calcium — to insure normal formation of the baby's bones and teeth.

"And most physicians prescribe iron pills during pregnancy because it's almost impossible• for the iron requirement to be met entirely through food during this time.

"Additional folic acid during pregnancy is recommended to protect the mother and fetus from the risk of anemia," she said.

Sodium is another mineral of major concern in the pregnant woman's diet. This is a chemical found in many substances such as ordinary table salt. The average diet contains from five to ten grams of sodium. Many women have been advised to reduce their salt, or sodium, intake to prevent excessive weight gain andk accumulation of body fluids, sho explained.

"Sodium retention during pregnancy is one of nature'st ways of conserving sodium to provide extra fluid to supply the expanded tissues and fluid compartments.

Nutritionists recommend that sodium be restricted only as a medical measure in threatened conditions such as toxemia," she said.

"Just being a man" is the most important aspect of fatherhood, Mrs. Ilene Miller, a family life education specialist, says.

"From their dad's examples children learn .what 'it means to be masculine. Watching and listening to their father helps children perceive how men should behave. They learn that men are more than just fathers — they are husbands, career men, citizens and individuals with varied interests and talents,"

"The best gift a father can give a son or daughter is himself — spending time working and playing with his children.

"Fathers also help their children become more sociable and behave acceptably as they interpret the codes of society. They show and and tell children what is right and wrong — what they can and cannot do, and why.

Fathers are one of the children's prime links with the wide world of the community. Through his conversations, interests and activities, a father influences his child's attitudes about the community," she said.

Being a good father is closely tied with being a good husband, the specialist added.

"Children benefit from family situations where father and mother share their work, friends, concerns, along with their joys too.

The child's attitudes about home and parental roles are shaped by these early contacts with both father and mother and remain with him all his life," she said.

Fathers' roles have changed over the past 20 years. They are becoming more involved with home affairs and child rearing and realizing that fathering is a full-time position beginning with the baby's birth, she said.

"Fathers are as essential as mothers in the lives of their children. For best physical, mental, emotional and social development, a child needs involvement with both parents through play, decision-making, discussions and everyday activities.

"Children grow self-confident and independent through warm, concerned and continuous contact with parents," Mrs. Miller said.
