There was discussion cf it being formed at the District VII meeting in San Antonio, Sunday, April 11th.

Brot.HHer Joe Slavik, Jr., is the member who got the "wheels turning" in that effort. Hi?. is the soli Brother Joe Slavik, Sr., longtime secretary of the RVOS and now retired, whom your editor had the pleasure of knowing since the 1948 SPJST Convention. We certainly feel that this territory is very fertile ground for SPJST prospects and the new lodge should prosper very effectively. Brother E. 3.

Kadlecek, Jr., a member of Lodge 88, Houston, and son of Brother and Sister Ed and Louise Kadlecek, Sr. of Houston, now lives in New Braunfels with his family. He has discussed the possibility of an SPJST lodge in that city with yours truly several times, stating that there are many good potential members there. Now it is becoming a reality. Best of luck to Brother Slavik and all of those making those worthwhile efforts for the good of our Society! * * The membership of Lodge No. 169, Brenham will have a meeting with some members of the Supreme Lodge on Wednesday, May 5th, to get the facts on how to go about building a lodge building. He is Brother Jos. W. Jezek of Bellville. Our SPJST congratulates and salutes this stalwart member. We regret that the picture was in color and could not be processed. * * Why Do We have Conventions?

Do we have conventions for banquets, gettogethers, entertainment, etc.? No, those are only the byproducts. The real value in a con-

vention is the exchange of ideas, to take stock of our progress and to make plans for the future. Periodically conventions draw many delegates together, to attend these American phenomena called conventions. We say, American phenomen . , advisedly because we are g, ou .1uutioilty that nowhere else in the world — in no other country — does the institution or custom, call it what you wish, of the deliberately arranged convocation of delegates exist to any extent worth mentioning.

There are certainly none where it is not only customary but one of the objectives of the convention to exchange the fruits of their experience, to discuss their problems and the solutions, thereto and in general to make our SPJST Sbciety more valuable to our members.

We no longer wonder what it is that brings delegates to conventions. We have attended enough of them to know they represent one of the best• and most admirable demonstrations • of this country's dynamic energy and its creative drive toward progress and growth.

They illustrate, as nothing else does, the spirit of give and take, and learn and teach, that have replaced in this country the old world policies of secrecy and the law of the jungle, so to speak. Let us bear this in mind at all times and let us employ to the utmost

Wednesday, April 28, 1976 the advantages and the opportunities that these conventions give us to meet and exchange ideas with those in our fraternal work who, after all, are here also to help and be helped.

Let us listen attentively to the officers reports and contribute all we can, whenever we can, out of the store of our experience. Let us bear in mind the mathematical certainty that the sum total of the knowledge, experience and judgment present at the XXII Convention, June 14-17' will be greater than any of its parts, as always, and therefore we shall plan to make the most of these convention days. * * Why Insure Children? The answer lies in how well we want to prepare our children for their future adult life. We train , encourage and educate them, all in preparing them to take their place in the world.

Life insurance is a necessity for every responsible citizen of today, and, of course, of tomorrow.

All normal children are insurable, but there are many things that happen between childhood and adulthood that prevent them from continuing to be insurable. We have but to recall the large number of our young people who were turned down as physically unfit for military service during the last war. The major part of these people were uninsurable and will have to go through life without the advantage and protection of life insurance for their families.

Most types of life insurance are an investment or savings. Ownership of life insurance policies performs many modem miracles. It stamps a person as being mature, dependable, a good manager. The first question a lending agency asks is: "How much life insurance do you have?" Its cash value often carries people over rough financial spots or makes it possible for them to take advantage of good business opportunities.

The wise and prudent parent not only provides his children with an education, but makes certain that they have a basic minimum amount of life insurance so that they can utilize to the fullest extent their education and training, and take advantage of every opportunity life offers them.

NEWSBRIEFS Irene Slovacek, 38, of Route 4, Hallettsville, died in the Citizens Memorial Hospital in Victoria on April 13. Funeral services were held from the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Sweet Home, with burial in the Sweet Home Catholic Cemetery. Sister Slovacek Was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 63 in Sweet Home, and had been manager of the Slovacek Grocery and Ballroom west of Hallettsville for a number of years. * * Mrs. G. G. (Sydonia) Fisbeck, 69, passed away in Hallettsville on April 4th following a short illness.

Funeral services were held from the Zion Lutheran Church in Moulton on April 6th, with interment following in the Moulton City Cemetery. Sister Fisbeck and her husband, Gus, had owned an automotive supply business in Moulton for many years. She had been a member of SPJST Lodge No. 184 in Moulton. * * Stanley Valcik, 57, (Lt. Col., Retired) died in his home at College station April 17th. Col. Valcik had been attending Texas A&M University, where he had also studied Czech. Further details not known at this time. Brother Valcik was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, and was the son of former Vestnik editor and late Brother Steve Valcik and Mrs. Valcik of Houston. (Word has just been received that Brother Valcik was buried in Houston on Tuesday, April 20th.)

—NAM Frances Volcik, 89, passed away in Smithville on April 22nd. Funeral services were held on April 23rd from Marrs & Jones Funeral Home in Smithville, with burial in Kovar Cemetery. Honorary SL President Edward L. Marek officiated on behalf of the SPJST. Sister Volcik was a longtime member of SPJST Lodge No. 38, Kovar, near Smithville. * * Rotrla-Martinek Reunion All the descendants of John Kotrla and Joe Martinek families are urged to , be present at the third annual reunion which will be held Sunday, May 2nd, 1976 at the Chamber of Commerce Hall in 111linger. During February we received 358 applications for $1,197,500 of insurance and in March we received 381 applications for $1,853,000 of insurance for a total of 1,087 applications for $4,459,275 of insurance written during the first three months of this year.

During the five-month pre-convention contest we received 1,672 applications for $7,813,275 of insurance.

On March 30th we had our banquet. It was really nice and everyone seemed to have plenty to eat, and enjoy the social. Awards were presented by Brother Silas H. Smith, SFM, in behalf of the Supreme Lodge. Then I gave each sales representative who sold $10,000 or more insurance, a gift. Each one present received a ball-point pen. And now that this is over, we are looking for another banner year, so we can celebrate again.

We are off to a good start.

We now have four new sales representatives: Brother Joe A. slavik, Lodge 185; Brother Manta D, Foster, Lodge 79; Sister Norma Friesenhahn, Lodge 133; and Sister Lucille Drury also of Lodge 133.

Brother Slavik and Sister Friesenhahn have already sold insurance.

New members accepted since our last meeting are Almon Barges; Daniel, Gloria, Reuben, Tommy, and Theresa Stepan. Our warmest welcome to each of you and we are so happy that you have chosen Lodge 24 for your membership.

Youth Leader LaVerne Cabla acknowledged the members who attended the District II spring meeting held on March 28th and thanked Bertha Haisler and Helen Spanhel for their contributions of baked items for the youth club. Sister Cabla also asked for the support of the entire membership regarding future lodge, district and state functions.

Several members voiced their opinion as to the changing of the meeting date and it was voted that the lodge meeting be set for the 2nd Wednesday of each month unless it conflicted with a community function, a district or state SPJST function or a special holiday.

It was voted, that a brief history of the lodge be submitted to the editor for publication in the convention issue of the Vestnik as has been done in the past.

Wednesday, April 28, 1976 LODGE NO. 29, TAYLOR The Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 held their regular monthly meeting, with the youth club presenting the flag and with all present reciting the pledge of allegiance.

President Adamek welcomed the guests and let them express a few words. The guests were District II Director Henry Vitek and Brother Dan Balusek from Lodge 47, Seaton.

Secretary Mike Kaiser read the minutes from the previous meeting. Albin Machu gave the treasurer's report and Andy Marek gave the property committee report. Dorothy Hirt gave the audit committee report for the last three months and found everything in order.

New applicants received are: Robin Theresa Rafferty, Dorothy Ann Rafferty, Michael Rafferty, Robert Richard Rafferty, Viola Beatrice Rafferty, Timothy Patrick Rafferty, Mildred O'Brien, Lloyd O'Brien, Jr., Kelly O'Brien and Shelly O'Brien,, By the way, we have three new sales representatives: Ronnie Rie-ger, Mike Kaiser and Melvin Steger. The Czech Conference which was held at our lodge Saturday, April 10th had a good turnout. The different speeches were real inter esting followed by a social hour and a delicious supper. Joe Patek's orchestra sounded better than ever, especially playing only polkas and waltzes as per requests.

Our next great event at Lodge 29 will be our annual May Fete, which will be held Sunday, May 2nd. It will begin by serving barbecue to be eaten there or to go, beginning at 11:30 a.m. with food and refreshments all afternoon.

The crowning of our queen will be at 3 p.m. We have three queens this year: a Bicentennial Queen, a May Queen, and an SPJST Queen.

Our Bicentennial Queen is Stancie Schwenker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Schwenker; May Queen is Marie Grieger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Grieger; and SPJST Queen is Sherry Pas•mann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Pasernann.

Our SPJST Queen will represent Lodge 29, Taylor, at the Beyersville May Fete.

Our youth leader, Melvin Steger, reported that he and his wife attended the youth leaders' retreat at Camp Val Verde. There are 25 members in the youth club and he said any child ages 6 to 16 years and member of the lodge are welcome to join the youth club.

An Easter egg hunt was held after the meeting and prizes were given.

The door prizes were won by Donna Pasemann, Linda Pospisil and Christi Pospisil.

Our next meeting has been changed to Friday, May 7th, at 7:30 p.m..

Fraternally, Ila Mae Jansky Reporter SPJST — LODGE NO. 48, BEYERSVILLE Dear Members, The Beyersville SPJST lodge held their regular monthly meeting, Sunday, April 11th at 3 p.m.

All reports were given and they stood approved as read.

B. C. Stalmach said that the Debonaires will be playing for our May Fete on May 9th. This is also Mother's Day. The coronation will be at 5 p.m. and the grand march at 7 p.m. Supper will be served in between the two affairs. There will be a prize for the youngest mother, oldest mother, and the mother with the most children.

The supper will consist of barbecue and sausage sandwiches and pickles, and cake for dessert.

Marsha Kaye Kokes is our new member for this month. We welcome her to our lodge.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 7th at 7:30 p.m. There will be a general clean-up and last-minute preparations for the May Fete.

LODGE NO. 81, NEEDVILLE Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting convened at 2 p.m.

Sunday, April 11th. The pledge of allegiance to the flag was recited by all present and the members stood for a moment of silent tribute to Brother James 0. Stiles who passed away since our last meeting. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as read by Secretary Mary Werner. Financial report was given lby Sister Ellene Zwahr and the treasurer's report was given by Sister Cons Vallet.

The income and the expense for the last month were given by Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel.

Correspondence: There were thank-you cards from the families of Alma Kuban and James 0.

Stiles.

Sister Rosalynda Hartfield reported on the Memorial Fund.

It was reported that Sister Frances Hurta was in a. hospital last week, but is at her daughter's home now and is feeling much better. Sister Bernice Boettcher has been on the sick list and may have to undergo surgery if her problem doesn't get better. Brother John Kolaja had a bad fall on Tuesday and had to be taken to a hospital in an ambulance. He fell on his sensitive hip and it was feared the hip was broken, but x-rays showed that it was not. Brother Kolaja is at home and is recuperating slowly.

Brother Louis Harms of Lodge 88 paid us a visit and praised our

10 work for the lodge.

The auditing committee was to meet on April 22nd, and audit the books.

We would like to welcome our new member, David R. Kelley, to our lodge and Chris A. Mexesh with the change of his certificate from JT to adult.

I'm sorry the names of our new members in my last report were left out. They are: Benjamin Chovanec and Travis Helpenstell.

Our apology to you both. We welcome you to our lodge and hope you will attend our meetings and you can become active members.

The Sales Representatives' Seminar was held Tuesday, April 13, at Needville SPJST Hall, at 7:30 p.m.

Hope all of you who are concerned were able to attend.

Reports on the District V meeting held at Lodge 142 Stefanik were given by Brothers Herbert Nowotny and Charles Matcek, and Sisters Mary Werner and Emily Kolaja.

Various committees met after the meeting for the purpose of deciding how to decorate our Czech Fest booth and what day would be best to do so. We also wanted to set the prices on the various items for our Country Store, workers for each day and many important details that needed to beworked out.

Sister Emily Kolaj a brought out the beautiful quilts that her fellow sisters have made so the membership would see them before they will be exhibited. She will have the names of the donors and their donations in the Vestnik because she is trying hard to keep a record of it all for this is a worthwhile project and she wants to give recognition to these wonderful people.

Fellow members, if you have not been approached for a, donation of pastry or anything else by any of the members, yet, please make something on your own will.

It was so nice to see Brother and Sister John Blinka in the meeting again after a bout with the flu.

The refund checks were distributed and the door prize was won by Brother Louis Hums who gave it back to the lodge with addition of four dollars. Thank you

We are so pleased that our lodge will be used for Camp Funshine again this year with Majorie Boniface in charge. It is so great to know people care about these children and give of their time to help them have a happier life.

Our social committee (Georgia Navratil, Mary Zatopek, and Dorothy Kacir), served delicious refreshments during the social hour of our meeting. Thanks to the ladies of the lodge for the desserts, too!

Friday evening, May 14th, at 7:30 p.m., will be the date for the next lodge meeting. Brother John Coufal, Jr. will be honored at this time. He will receive his 50-year membership pin. Dear Brothers and Sisters, Some of our brothers and sisters attended a polka and waltz jamboree in Moulton, a few weeks ago.

They were Arnold Spencer, Albert Zajicek, Herbert Huber and his wife, Mrs and Mrs. Perry Quade, Annie C. Green, Tillie Friedel and E. "Sly" %lanina.

They all had a great time. Also, by the time you read this, the choral group from our lodge will have appeared at the Czech Fest in Rosenberg. I hope to have a report of the day's activities.

Our sad news this week is that Mr. Stanley Valcik passed away last week. He leaves a wife and two sons. Mr. Valcik was the son of the late Stephen Valcik and one of our hard-working members, Helen Valcik, and the brother of Mrs. Helen Schnell. Our deepest sympathy and condolences to these families at their loss.

For the Saturday, April 10 Vrazel dance many people had birthdays.

Even though it rained on Easter Sunday, everyone had a good time and everyone got some eggs, both hard-boiled and prize. Dunk° turned out to be a very successful game and everyone had a good time at the dance afterward. The Music was provided by a group called the Wranglers and everyone agreed they were a good group.

Congratulations to Mrs. Ruth Duncan and her helpers for making the day great even though the weather was horrible.

Dear Members: The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 177, Academy met, with President Brother Jerry Tomastik, presiding New members accepted into the lodge were Edward Sullivan, Danny Fiebig, Nicole Kelsey, Mark Gerngrois and Eraszno Ramirez.

It was decided that the kitchen will close at 11 p.m. on dance nights.

Sister Pat Tomastik, youth leader, gave a most favorable report for the youth club. We are proud of her efforts and the accomplish:meats of the youth. Lodge 177 will sponsor a trip to Six Flags for the youth club.

Dear Editor and SPJST Members: I Thank you very much for helping to publicize the recently held Conference of Ozech teachers and students and thanks also to all of you who attended the meeting, supper and dance. The turnout was very good but there was room for more, especially at the meeting.

We are very grateful especially to President Adamek and members of Lodge 29 for use of their facilities and to Mr. and Mrs. Ja,nsky for helping us in staging the conference.

One result of the conference was a resolution proposed by Mr. Nick Morris and passed by the assembly calling upon the officials at Texas A&M University to reconsider their recent decision to discontinue instruction in Czech and to reinstate courses in Czech at A&M University, especially in view of the fact that some 35 students had signed up to take such courses. We have sent notice of this resolution to Dr. W. David Maxwell, Dean of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University, and 'we are waiting for his reply.

We hope that his response will be favorable but if it is not, then we must pursue with other means.

As Dr. Jos. J. Skrivanek (retired) former professor of Czech at A&M pointed out in his letter printed in the March 10th. issue of Vestnik and reiterated in his speech at the conference in • Taylor, it is most important that all Texans of Czech extraction strive to keep the Czech language program going.

Promotion of the Czech language program was the basic concern of our conference this year, and that is why we are pleased that so many of you could come.. We hope to see even more of you next year.

CERTIFICATE ENDOWS FOR JOS. W. JEZEK

According to the long-standing policy of the SPJST, when a member attains the age of 96, his c ertificate endows for the face amount of the policy. One of the more recent members in this category is Brother Jos. W. Jezek of Wesley, who attained the age of 96 on January 13th. According ' to Supreme Lodge records, Brother Jeteek is the 27th member of the SPJST to have attained the age of 96. Check for the endowed amount has been forwarded to him for presentation by his family.

Jos. W. Jezek was born in Austin County in the community of Wesley, the son of Jos. Jezek and Veronika (Syptak) Jezek. He lived all his life in Austin and Washington Counties. As a young boy his parents farmed and were engaged in the making of syrup front sugar cane. As a young man he drove a wagon and team and delivered groceries, dry goods and supplies throughout the country. In 1905 he became manager of a general merchandise stare in Nelsonville.

Brother Jezek married Miss Annie Koppa in Nelsonville on April 10th 1907: He was the secretary and financial secretary of Lodge in • Nelsonville for many years. Ile loyally attended meetings and was alitays willing to help his lodge in any way. He had joined the SPJST in 1905. His hobbles have always been fishing, hunting and beekeeping, gardening, farming and raising cattle. He continued all these activities until recently when his health no longer permitted them.

In 1921 he moved with his family to Brenham in Washington County and in 1932 he moved to the community of Wesley in Austin County to the original family homestead where he raised cattle and farmed. His wife, who had also been a member of the SPRIT, passed away in 1951. He later married Mrs. Frances Marek, who died soon after their marriage. Brother Jezek is the oldest of seven children. He has a brother, Alfred, living in Houston and a number of nieces and nephews. He lived in the hOme of his sister-in-law, Mrs.

Brother Jezek also lived in Houston in the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Fred and Gracie Hinze. He had surgery while living in Houston and lived in a nursing home in Houston for about three years. In 1971 he moved to the Sweetbriar Nursing Home in Bellville; his daughter, Mrs. Fred Hinze and her husband moved onto the original family homestead; Mrs. Hinze is the only child. The Supreme Lodge is happy to make payment of this endowed certificate. Brother Jezek is a true example of our early-day pioneers and of the people who were responsible for the early days

of our SPJST Society. We all salute Brother Jezek and wish him well. Brother Jezek is the 27th person in the history of the SPJST to have his certificate endowed at age 96. There have been a total of 31 persons to date whose certificates have endowed at age 96.

SL PR Office - SP-1131. — THIRD ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS OF CZECH (The Goon and The Not So Good) The Third Annual Conference of Students and Instructors of Czech in Texas took place again this year on the premises of SPJST Lodge 29 in Taylor on Saturday, April 10th. The attendance was quite good, although there were more present for the dance in the evening than for the conference. All three conferences so far have been sponsored by the Czech Club at

13 the University of Texas.

Mr. Robert Ermis, president of the Czech Club at UT, and his fellow students and colleagues in the Slavic Languages Department at UT, deserve our commendation and everyone's gratitude for putting the program together and for a very interesting and informative afternoon. Speakers included Prof.

Joseph J. Skrivanek, Ret., formerly with A&M, Dr. Preston C. Kronkosky with the Southwestern Educational Development Laboratory in Austin, Nick A. Morris of the SPJST, Temple, rof. Josef Rostinsky, Czech instructor at UT, Clint Machann, Ph.D. candidate and Czech student at UT in Austin, and Roman Bartash, KJT attorney of Taylor.

Prof. Skrivanek touched on the demise of the Czech language at A&M, and asked for suggestions on how' to solve the problem, and also dealt with an interesting review of the Prague excursions and the Czech language growth in Texas, particularly A&M, down through the years.

In his presentation, Brother Morris dealt with three factors necessary to the success of the Czech language in Texas: 1) There must be students who are interested in pursuing the study of the Czech language; 2) we must have competent teachers of the language; 3) we must show positive results in the instruction of the language.

On the latter point, he dwelt on the time spent in the classroom in teaching Czech dances, customs in 'Czechoslovakia, folklore, culture, and the various kroj 'worn in the regions throughout Czechoslovakia; that this was all well and good, but should not replace instruction of the language itself, pointing out that knowledge of the language was the first ingredient to understanding other areas of interest.

He further proposed that Robert Ermis, chairman of the assembly, ask for the assembly's endorsement of a letter or resolution to officials at A&M strongly urging them to reconsider ' and reinstate instruction in the Czech language, especially in view of the fact that some 35 students had signed up for the course at that institution. He pointed out that he had endeavored to get an audience with the president of the university, but had not had the courtesy of a reply.

14 Later, Mr. Ennis got the wholehearted and enthusiastic endorsement of the assembly for such a letter (resolution).

Brother Morris further stated his disappointment in the termination of Czech classes at Wharton County Junior College, and pointed out the attendant needs of adequate remuneration to the instructors and teachers of Czech, stating that these individuals had a right to a decent sustenance and to proper remuneration, and that the furtherance of Czech language studies depends on competent teachers and that they are entitled to adequate compensation by the institutions employing them. He stated that some of the instructors had been in touch with him regarding their financial plights and were appealing for help.

Brother Morris went on to invite members of the assembly to visit the SPJST Supreme Lodge office building in Temple and to go through the library, archives and museum, pointing out that two of the schools had done so that very morning — groups from El Campo High School and the University of Houston.

In his remarks, Prof. Rostinsky echoed Brother Morris' sentiments and said that we must all coordinate our efforts and that we must insist on being heard, both with the universities, legislators, and fraternal organizations.

Appreciation was also expressed to Brother and Sister Joe and Ila Mae Jansky of Lodge 29 for their help and thoughtfulness, and to the officers and members of Lodge 29 for the free use of their facilities.

—SL PR Office * * Once again, I am proud to report on the splendid work and behavior of the young people involved in this event every year and those taking Czech in the various institutions throughout Texas — our own sons and daughters.

They are a wonderful group of young, men and women and their behavior is always exemplary and beyond reproach. Yes, they sang and danced and had a wonderful time, but it was all in keeping with good wholesome entertainment.

VESTNIK Music by the Joe Patek Orchestra was especially enjoyed, as was the delicious supper of barbecue and all the trimmings catered by Vencil Mares of Taylor. * * Upon returning to Temple, I received a call from one of the instructors who had been present at the conference on Saturday telling me that students associated with "The Battalion," A&M's campus newspaper, were very interested In the report that I had not received a reply from the university president to my letter of May 1975. I will be happy to make available to them a photocopy of that letter to the university president dated 23 May 1975, with a copy having been sent to the vice president of that institution. No answer was ever received from either of the two individuals. With "cooperation" like that it is small wonder that we seem to be constantly battling insurmountable odds. Add to that the lack of interest, or negative attitude on the part of counselors, and we sometimes wonder how and why we are making the progress that we are. All of the institutions involved are state supported by public taxes — your and my tax money — and we have a right to air what are certainly legitimate claims and even complaints. We are entitled to our "place under the sun" — like other groups in this country!

We will see what happens as a result of the letter (resolution) from Robert Ermis, who was kind enough to send me a copy of it, and what comes of the interest in the matter expressed by members of "The Battalion" staff. We will follow up on Robert's letter.. Last Year, a staff writer by the name of Anderson wrote a very laudatory article in that paper, decrying the phasing out of Czech at the institution.

All of his attests to the fact that efforts ARE being made to restore and promote Czech instruction. All the speakers that Saturday were in accord with these efforts. There IS a common purpose and goal.

There is probably a need for centralizing and coordinating such efforts.

The SPJST has supported this program at several institutions for so long and it has been so thoroughly a part of the curricu-

lum, we dislike seeing the program (ended under the circumstances without exhausting all efforts to save it.

Mr. Schulte is a Madison High School graduate and is presently in the United States Navy.

Mr. Melvin E. Schiwart, organist, accompanied Miss Teressa Kendall in "There Is Love" and "The Lord's Prayer."

The bride, given in marriage by her father, chose a high necked gown designed with deep Venice lace sleeves inset with pearls and an organza skirt trimmed with lace and pearl appliques. A sheer tie back accented the full chapel train and the pearl camelot with Venice lace and pearls held the fingertip length veil. A bouquet of spring flowers complemented the ensemble.

Mrs. Ann Baethe served as ma-

tron of honor and bridesmaids were Miss Jeannie Smith, Miss Gail Walkinsaw and Mrs. Cindy Carter.

They wore pale pastel dresses of blue, pink, green, and peach organza embossed with flowers and trimmed in lace. They carried spring bouquets.

Miss Anna Larie Sontag was flower girl.

Serving as best man was Mr. Douglas Nowak and groomsmen were Mr. Hank Wedelich, Mr. Vincent Stroud and Mr. David Olson.

Master Mark Schulte acted as ringbearer and ushers were Mr. Greg Schulte and Mr. Steve Faulk.

Reception followed at the church fellowship hall. The couple's friend, Mr. Steve Zakos, made and decorated the five-tiered wedding cake.

Miss Diane Lucko, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Lucko of Rt. 1, Cameron was crowned Redbud Queen at the 37th Annual Redbud Festival at Texas Women's University in Denton.

Each year students at TWU select twenty Redbud Princesses from each of the four classes. A committee of judges composed of former queens administrative officers, faculty and staff members of the university choose a Redbud Queen. The Redbud Queen represents an all-around outstanding student at TWU. Miss Lucks, a senior special education major, has been a Redbud Princess for four years. She is president of the Chaparral Literary Social Clubs, first vice president of the University Woman's Association and a_ Campus Government Association representative., She has been a cast member and costume director of several campus stage productions and a yell leader for her class for two years. She has been a member of the president's cabinet for three consecutive years, was named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.

Diane, her parents, and her sisters, Ellen, Mrs. Connie Hoelscher, and Mrs. Sharon Skupin, are an member of Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

From The Age Youth Leaders LODGE NO. g, COTTONWOOD Dear Readers, The youth club held their meeting April 9th, at 8 p.m. The 'attendance was good and we had one visitor, Amy Gerik. Come back to visit us.

The volleyball playoffs were held April 2nd. Our juniors and teens didn't win, but they did play good games, and we all are proud of you.

We enjoyed playing with Lodge 54, Lodge 66 and Lodge 35. I hope we can do this more often.

April 11th (Palm Sunday), the youth club put on an Easter program and after the program we had an egg hunt, including prize eggs for each group. The two groups consisted of 1 through 6, and 7 to 12.

I want to thank the parents for helping with the program and all those of you who donated eggs for the hunt; all those who donated items for the Mark boys' basket; all of you who gave an item for the door prizes; Brother Fred Monthie and his helpers for helping with the hunt, and everyone else who participated in any way.

Thank you again so very much.

Afterward everyone enjoyed a fried chicken supper. The sisters who prepared the meal can rest assured that it turned out really good.

April 14th the youth club had an Easter program at the rest home and brought gifts and food.

Margaret Lander will represent Lodge 6 in the Miss SPJST contest at District III spring meeting on Sunday, April 25th at Lodge 154, Fort Worth.

Our 1976 lodge royalty representatives are: King David Dobecka, Queen Joyce Wadismann, Duke Bennie Mynar, Duchess Stephnie Mynar.

We will practice group talent every Friday night, so be sure and come.

Well, our Easter Sunday was a wet one, but we did have an Easter egg parade and all in all it was a happy day for our children. Mrs. Vavra came to visit our club and talked about the new rule book.

We also planned a party on April 23rd. As a money-making project, We will have a booth at the May Fest and sell watermelon slices and other items.

Virginia Bednar (11) (4-21-76) SPJST — LODGE NO. 18, ELGIN Dear Members, Lodge No. 18, SPJST youth had their Easter progrant on April 11th at 7 p.m. at the hail. Title was "From Sorrow to Joy." Our Easter program started out with different groups singing a variety of religious hymns, then the story of Christ was told.

I just want to thank all the youth who came out to practice so that our program could be as good as it was. Also, a special thanks to Dale Kessel for helping us all and what a fine job everyone did.

LODGE NO. 18, ELGIN Dear Members: Some of Lodge 18's members went to District I spring meeting on March 28th at Snook.

Due to the rainy weather, the youth were unable to hold their meeting outside. There was a very large turnout and the judging for Miss SPJST was also held.

It was good to see all the friends we have made.

Our youth department has also been practicing for our Easter program which was presented on April 11th. Dale Kessel worked with our youth leader in helping put on the program.

LODGE NO. 4, IIALLETTSVILLE Dear Readers, Friday, April 9th, our youth club held its monthly meeting and a party celebrating Easter. At our meeting it was decided to give to the Easter Seals as our April charity. We will have a volleyball party on May 8th at Assistant Youth Leader Marlyn Sevcik's home. We also discussed the upcoming YAD and the past district meeting at Which time our club was well represented. Our poster will advance to the, state competition. Thank you, to all who supported our club booth, we really appreciated it.

Sunday, April 11th, the mother lodge held its monthly meeting when our youth club presented an Easter program. Afterward there was an Easter egg hunt. An egg decorating contest was held for the youth club members. Winners in the ages 6-10 group were: Gary Chudej, 1st; Chris Chudej, 2nd.

Winners in the 11-16 age group were Annie Zabransky, 1st; Laurie Chudej, 2nd. Lunch and refreshments were then enjoyed by all.

Door prize went to Frank Zabransky, adult, and Jason Kalmus, youth. The April birthday cake was won by Mrs. Frank Zabransky.

LODGE NO. 179, WARRENTON The SPJST youth club met on April 11 at 7 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Lyn Leonhardt. Lori led us' in the pledge. Secretary Lori Koopmann read the minutes from the previous meeting and Jeanne Eckermann gave the treasurer's report.

The March box supper was a success because the mother lodge did "a tremendous jab in buying our boxes.

We had refreshments of chicken salad, cake, chips, and sodawater, with the mother lodge.

Michelle Renee Havant, 4-yearold daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Namara, hands her entry blank to Martha McKay, left, contest director, and LaFon Mason, assistant director, to make her the first entrant in the Cinderella Girl Pageant being sponsored May 8th by the Golden Light Chapter of the American BUsiness Women's Association (ABWA). Proceeds from the pageant will go to the chapter's scholarship fund. The contest is

divided into three divisions: Cinderella Tot for ages 3 to 8, Miniature Miss for ages '7 through 9, and Cinderella Miss for ages 10-12.

LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Members, The youth club held its meeting Friday evening, April 9, because there was too much planned on Sunday, when the mother lodge held its meeting. President Joyce Wachsmann called the meeting to order. The pledge to the American flag was recited. Eddie Hykel called the roll and the minutes of the previous meeting were read.

Delores Dobecka gave the treasurer's report. Youth leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported that food and money was donated for a charity. She also reported that she and her assistant, Rose Uptmor went to the leaders' training class in Ennis. New rule books

Wednesday, April 28, 1978 were given to each family. Anyone wanting to go to camp is asked to think about it since time is flying by rapidly.

In the kite contest, Dolores Dobeeka had the prettiest and best home-made kite belonged to Bobby Hykel. We didn't get to fly them yet. The bake sale in Leroy was a great success. The volleyball playoffs were held and Lodge 35, Elk, teens will play, and Lodge 66 Linden juniors against the northern section.

Miss Margaret Lander . will represent our Lodge in the District Miss SPJST contest at Lodge 154, Fort Worth, on April 25th.

We selected our lodge queen, who is Joyce Wachsmann; her duchess is Stephanie Mynar. The king is yours truly, David Dobecka, and my duke is Bennie Mynar.

In the bunny bag contest Delores Dobecka won 1st place, Tammy Mynar 2nd, Stephanie Mynar, 3rd.

In the Easter card contest, Bobby' Hykel won 1st, Delores Dobecka 2nd, Darrell Uptmor 3rd. Theresa Dobecka won the jelly bean contest.

The door prize was won by Stephanie Mynar. Delores Dobeeka baked the bunny birthday cake which was brought to the mother lodge meeting Sunday, April 11th.

We also held our Easter program, hunt, and family supper that Sunday.

The birthdays of the month were Keith Hykel, Margaret Lander and Melanie Mazanec. We went to the rest home April 14th where we presented the program and handed out Easter baskets which the club members made.

FRANK H. RERAN, JR., who passed away Monday, February 9, 1976, at the age of 53, at St. Mary's Hospital, Galveston, after .a long illness.

Brother Beran was born September 5, 1922, in East Bernard.

He was retired from the Lipton Tea Co., and was a member of the P.Tagles Lodge, Kirwin High Booster Club, VFW, KJT, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, past appraiser of RVOS, past organizer of SPJST Lodge No. 173, veteran of World War II and also a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 12th, at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Catholic Church, with the Reverends Kelly and Smaistrla officiating. Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris participated in the mass and de-

21 livered the ulegy. Burial followed at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Dickinson, under the direction of J. Levy & Brother Funeral Home.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February pith.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Georgia Reran of Galveston; his mother, Mrs. Frank Beran, Sr., of East Bernard; a son, Charles E. Beran, of Dallas; a daughterin-law, Mrs. Sheila Beran, of Dallas; a daughter, Mrs. Yvonne Beach of Galveston; a son-in-law, Jimmy Beach of Galveston; three brothers, Adolph Beran, Sr., of East Bernard, Sam Beran, Sr., of Derrville, La., and Ben Beran of Richmond, Va.; four sisters, Mrs. Vinsil Smaistrla of East Bernard, Mrs. Paul Leskorjan of Highlands, Mrs. Alphonse Dusek of Rosenberg, and Mrs. Julian Jochel of Richmond; and a step-grandson, Jimmy Beach, Jr. Brother Beran was preceded in death by his son, Frank Beran, ILL in May, 1967.

Pallbearers were Emil Leskorjan, Aubrey Zabojnik, Jr., David Smaistrla, Ronald Jochel, Gus Kutoch and George Beran.

Mrs. Croft was born in Bell County and lived in Temple most of her life. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church.

She was 69 years of age and resided at 1511 North Main Street, Temple, Texas.

Survivors 'are her husband, Elmer Croft of Temple; two daughters, Mrs. Louise Murray of Temple and Mrs. Josie Nicks of Beaumont; one brother, Joe Fojtasek of Temple; three grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.

Sister Lehotsky was 65 years of age and was born in Seaton, the daughter of the late Frank V. and Rosa Karnes SIpanhel. She had lived in Temple since her marriage in 1927.

Mrs. Lehotsky was a retired seamstress and was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church, where she was active in teaching and working in the children's department for 39 years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Galveston, the Texas Hairdressers' Association and past president of ShelkeLs Unlimited of Galveston.
