FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Due to limited space much material has been deferred to a later publication. We hope to be able to include all the letters. The second paragraph of Article 47(a) of our by-laws states: " . . . one issue of the Vestnik be published 2 months before the convention which will be exclusively for the reports of the officers, directors, publication committee, and other standing committees, so that every delegate may have all pre-convention reports together." In this issue, therefore, are published pre-convention reports of SL officers, directors, medical director, publication committee, SYD and other committees. There are reports dealing with income and expense so read them carefully and save this issue as well as others dealing with information pertaining to the forthcoming XXIInd convention. We hope to be able to publish our back log of material and pictures next week. Some of the reports are rather lengthy, and probably somewhat 'boring, however, you are asked to read them and consider the pertinent facts. * * In the Publication Committee report you will note that they agreed to have bid forms sent out to varlets publishers for bids on printing the SPJST Vestnik for the years in the future. It is your editor's un-
QUOTATIONS Prejudice is a great time saver. You can form opinions without having to get the facts. One of the most beautiful compensations of life is that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself. * * Progress — Go as far as you can see. When you get there you'll see further. * Public sentiment is everything. With public opinion nothing can fail; Without it nothing can succeed. —Abe Lincoln derstanding that the bid forms to be sent out will be agreed upon and approved as final in conjunction with our PC Chairman Ed Mazanec and then sent out. The sealed bids are to be sent to the PC Chairman by the companies making bids and will be opened when the PC meets at the convention. Then the PC will make a recommendation on the bids to the delegates to the convention. Article 3 of our by-laws states that the Convention of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) has the power to: (h) review the recommendation of the Publication Committee as to bids of the publisher of the official or-
gan, etc. Here we see that the PC is acting according to the definite decigion of the last convention and will review the sealed bids after they are opened and discussed by them and then make their recommendation and allow the delegates to voice their opinions. Probably the PC may even wish to publish the bid form in our Vestnik; that is something yours truly does not know about at the present time. At any rate, our PC is looking out for the best interest of our SPJST where the future of our official Vestnik is concerned. * * The SPJST By-Laws do not require the editor to give a preconvention report, however, I will recap very briefly the 4 years since the 1972 convention. I feel that the general membership has been satisfied with this publication and have not been complaining. The work continues to increase as our Society grows. Last week we sent out 13,411 Vestniks and this issue we are sending 13,428 — a gain of 17 in one week! That is plus the 100 or so paid subscriptions direct from the publishing company. When I became editor in 1969 the amount of Vestniks mailed out weekly was 9,800, so you see, we are growing. In 1973 I sent 3 questionable let-
