FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Saturday, March 20 our SPJST Publication Committee held their first meeting of 1976 and was very likely, their last meeting prior to the XXIInd Convention in June.

Their report will most assuredly be in the April 14th issue of the Vestnik, along with the other reports of other standing committees and Supreme Lodge officers.

Your editor will not go into too much kletail before their report is publishea; suffice it to state that the committee, by an overwhelming majority, voted to recommend to keep the Vestnik a weekly publication, this to go to the convention. Here be reminded that the April 14th issue will be largely devoted to the various pre-convention reports so WRITE EARLY! space will be limited. More later.

The next day, Sunday, March 21st was the District V meeting held at Lodge Stefanik No. 142, Houston. District V Secretary Tillie Helnicamp has a rather concise set of minutes of the meeting in this issue, plus some information in Sister Susan Schenburn's letter from Lodge No. 88, Houston. The day was enjoyable and it was certainly a pleasure to see so many of our lifelong fraternal friends and acquaintances in Houston and from the entire District V area District V President Jerry Prochp,zka, ex-school teacher, principal,

—Anonymous and superintendent of schools in Crosby, who we have had the pleasure of knowing since childhood, handled the meeting with parliamentary knowhow and a sincere fraternal way in respect to all of his fellow members. 1Te handled the meeting with dispatch and nobody seemed too tired by the time it was adjourned. He is to be commended, as are all of the officers of District V for cooperative, efficient work. To handle a fraternal meeting or convention in a fraternal society is not easy,

that was a lesson learned by this writer long ago, especially in the 1952 SPJST Convention in Houston as vice chairman with Brother George Kacir as chairman, at that time. Keep up the good work in District V! Some of the pictures of the meeting and also the District V SR's Banquet appear in this issue; more will appear next week. * * Remember the Youth Leaders' Retreat, April 3-4, Camp Val Verde.

Also the Czech Ex-students' Conference, April 10, at Taylor. * * All of us are now aware of the successful year 1975 was for our SPJST Society in $15,000,000 sales of fraternal life insurance; the most outstanding year we have ever had, insurance-wise, as well as in financial returns.

While reminiscing about our pioneer founders, we realize that almost none of them even attended a college or university to be qualified to sell insurance. Still, in spite of this, shall we say disadvantage, they left us an inheritance and after numerous years, we today gratefully can reveal the fact that many of our active sales representatives have the knowledge and knowhow to be qualified to sell insurance to a prospect.

There are times when some of our readers probably wonder now does the SPJST Society achieve such high goals. Well, some of the

The third annual conference of Czech Teachers and Students will take place again this year at Lodge 29, Taylor, on Saturday afternoon, April 10th. The conference will get under way at 4 p.m, followed by a supper, social and dance. Music will be furnished by the Joe Pat,ek Orchestra of Shiner. These conferences have been and are again this year sponsored by the Czech Club at the University of Texaa Robert Ennis is president of the Czech Club. The public is invited, especially those who are interested in supporting the cause of the Czech language in Texas in various institutions of learning.

A more detailed report should be forthcoming in the Vestnik soon.

SPJST By-Law Recommendations RECOMMENDED and SUGGESTED CHANGES IN OUR BY-LAWS FOR THE 1976 CONVENTION — TO THE BY-LAW COMMITTEE: 1. It is recommended that our index be further condensed and abbreviated.

2. Article 1 (c): The words "Supreme Lodge" means the officers and directors elected by the Convention.

3. Article 1 (k): The words "Social Member" means a member who cannot be insured by the SPJST on account of his age or health. Something ought to be put in regarding trial applications for those prospective members thought to be uninsurable because of health or age, thusly: In order for a person to become a "Social Member", he must have first had a trial application submitted by a sales representative to the Supreme Lodge, giving all information regarding the health status of the applicant. The Supreme Lodge will then advise the sales representative whether or not to (Continued on page 4)

4 proceed to have the applicant submit to a medical. If the applicant is not accepted by the Society due to health, he may then apply for social membership in a local lodge.

4. Under Art. 4 (a) change: from 20 to 150 . . also change 4 (a)3 to 150.

5. Art. 4 (b): End Art. 4 (b) after the words ". . . without regard to length of membership . . deleting rest of paragraph.

6. Add to Art 4 (d) 3 the following: Attended the majority of the meetings, including special called meetings, during each . . â&#x20AC;˘; and after the last sentence add: The record of previous lodge attendance shall be certified by the lodge president and secretary and it will be the responsibility of the transferred member to obtain this record.

7. Re-word Art. 4(e)4 as follows, after the first sentence: If a lodge is entitled to an additional delegate, or if any one of the elected delegates cannot go to the convention, for whatever reason, the substitute with the highest number of votes fills the first vacancy.

The same procedure is continued until all substitutes are depleted, In which case additional substitutes are elected if needed. (Delete rest of paragraph).

8. Somewhere under Art. 4, add the following: Lodges organized less than three years before the election of delegates, or those lodges in existence longer than that but which became active less than three years after a period of dormancy, may elect delegate(s) to the convention and let the delegate body pass on their eligibility under Art 2(a) of these by-law.

9. In Article 4(e) add 6 as follows: In the event a lodge does not have enough members qualified to be elected delegates according to these by-laws, that lodge will not forfeit the votes it is entitled to instead, those delegates qualified and elected may cast their votes for the delegates not elected, according to present Article 4(e)5.

10. Under Art. 6 add new (e) as follows: In the event a lodge either disbands or merges between conventions, and a special convention is held or referendum by mail is conducted, that lodge automatically loses its representation in conventions.

12. In Article 12(a) add: He also appoints a temporary committee of 7 tellers to tabulate votes during the election of the chairman and co-chairman of the convention. (The president has been do-

ing this in practice, but this gives him the authority for doing so.)

13. Article 12(i): Change second sentence as follows: The purpose of these meetings will be to elect (instead of nominate) a district director and his substitute . . .

These results will be reported to the chairman of the convention who will announce them. (In practice, this is what the district caucuses have been doing —

electing. Rest of article remains as is•) Arts. 12(i) and 53(e) are an almost exact ' duplication. One should be deleted, probably 53(e).

The By-Law Committee should decide whether the wording should be placed under the Convention or under the article dealing with districts.

14. Under Art. 13, delete (b) and refer for new wording under Art. 19.

15. Article 13(f): Change to read: Committee on election tellers, seven members. Rest of article to remain as is. (Seven should be enough).

16• Article 14(b), pertaining to the By-Law Committee, should be amended to read as follows: In the event that neither the elected member nor his substitute can serve on the committee, the district delegates from the preceding convention shall elect another member from the district to serve on the committee. The member must reside within the district he represents. The district president, together with the other district officers, conducts this election in not less than 30 days and no later than 60 days by whatever means they feel most expedient, and shall notify the secretary of the By-Law Committee and the Supreme Lodge as to the results of the election immediately thereafter.

17. Article 17(b): Add the following: In the event the convention secretaries cannot resolve a question pertaining to any part of proceedings in the convention, they shall meet and the views of the majority of the convention secretaries shall prevail.

18. The paragraph in Article 19 would become 19(a) and the following would become 19(b): The Finance ComMittee, (instead of Salaries and Donations), appointed by the chairman in the convention, recommends per diem of delegates and committees, salaries of members of the Supreme Lodge, editor, donations, allocations, expenditures, etc., 5 members. This committee also has the authority to recommend adjustments in the foregoing to the delegates between conventions by way of a referendum. The Finance Committee is a standing committee and will meet at least once in the year of the convention, after January 1st, for the purpose of getting and studying information on the over-

6 all financial posture of the Society in order to fulfill their responsibilities during and between conventions. In the event of a vacancy on this committee, the Supreme Lodge has the authority to fill such vacancy by appointment. (Effective immediately in convention).

(Note: I would agree with Bro. George Kacir's recommendation that the duties of a Finance Committee (or S&D Committee) might better be assigned to the By-Law Committee. This also makes sense because the By-Law Committee is already a standing committee and meets prior to the convention. If they assumed the additional task of making salary and other recommendations, this would cut down on remuneration. The above, however, would be an alternative.)

19. Art. 29(a) should be amended to read as follows: Regular meetings of the Supreme Lodge will be held quarterly the second week in January, April, July, and October. In ease of necessity, the president has the right to change the dates of the meetings to a prior or later date. The rest of the article to remain as is.

20. Under Art. 31(j) re-word as follows: He appoints, with the approval of the Supreme Lodge, Field Supervisors whose primary duties shall be to assist the vice president in -the sale of insurances The field supervisers shall receive such salary and expense allowance as may be fixed by the Supreme Lodge. (Also change the period required for active membership in the SPJST from 5 to 2 years.)

21. Somewhere in Art. 36 add the following: In the event of the suspension of a lodge under (f) above, at least 20 adult members of the suspended lodge in good standing may petition the SL to grant the establishment of a new lodge 22. The present Article 36 is rather lengthy. It might be cut in half with new numbering and lettering. Re-codify.

23. Somewhere in Art. 36, add: The Supreme Lodge will periodically hold workshop sessions for local lodge officers so that they may become more familiar with the duties of their offices.

24. Amend Art. 36(d) to read: . . Examiner, with' the exception of the president and directors."

25. In Art. 36(y), change last sentence to read: The Supreme Lodge will remit an amount adequate to cover mailing expenses (postage and envelopes) to local lodges annually to help pay their mailing expenses.

26• In Art. 38(b) change $70,000 to $100,000 in both places. — (Lodge land and building loans).

27. In Art. 44, change last sentence to read: "Schools, colleges and universities offering and instructing the Czech language for credit will receive the Vestnik at no cost•" (Present article is too vague and unrealistic.)

28. Under Art. 46, •add new (j) as follows: In the event of incapacity, death or resignation of the substitute on the Publication Committee, a qualified member will be appointed to this committee by the Supreme Lodge in the next regular SL meeting following such vacancy.

29. In Art. 53(b): Members of every district will hold at least one business meeting a year, which may be combined with social and youth activities . Leave rest as is.

30. Conflicts in Articles 53(e) and 13(d). Article 13 states that the Insurance Committee is appointed by the chairman and vice chairman of the convention and will function during the convention. Article 53(e) stipulates that the district caucuses will elect a member and his substitute to the Insurance Committee. This should be resolved one way or the other —either for the chairman and vice chairman to continue appointing them or leave their election up to the district caucuses.

31. Add Art. 65(e): Soliciting, coaxing, urging, or in any way inducing or causing members to transfer from one lodge to another is not condoned and is explicitly forbidden by this by-law.

32. Under Art 72 add: " . • . but such social member does not have the right of deliberation in the meetings, is not eligible to vote or hold office, serve on any committee or in any official capacity in the local lodge." (Add this wording to Art. 1(k) also.)

33. In Art. 84 (a) and (c) change the amount for funeral expenses from $500 to $1,000.

34. Re-word Art 93 as follows:

Local lodges are independent units under the control of the Supreme Lodge. Local lodges are encouraged to adopt rules and regulations, such rules and regulations not to conflict with the by-laws of the Society and state laws. Lodges may obtain sample draft copies of local R&R from the Supreme Lodge on request. Each lodge will submit a copy of its rules and regulations, if any, including any subsequent amendments or changes, to the Supreme Lodge within 60 days of their adoption.

35. Add new (c) to Art. 107 as follows: Lodges will also have an appropriate means of recording the attendance of members at lodge meetings, both regular and special.

Those persons not recorded will not be counted present. Members recorded as present but leaving prior to adjournment of the meeting, will have their names reknoved from the record, unless they announce verbally serious and valid reasons for leaving acceptable to a majority of the members present at the time of departure. (This would provide for a member coming to lodge meetings, being recorded as present, and leaving shortly thereafter.)

36. In Art. 96(a) delete the last sentence: The youth leader takes office June 1ste, 3'7. Re-word Art. 100(b) as follows: The president and other lodge officers shall visit sick members from time to time, and he appoints the majority of all committees and the vice president appoints the minority of all committees in the local lodge.

38. In Art. 101(b) re-word as follows: He assumes the president's office in the event of a vacancy, for whatever reason. It he declines to serve as president., the membership will fill the vacancy through an election.

39. In Art. 105 re-word first sentence as follows: The treasurer ,receives premium payments from the financial secretary and must render to the membership periodic reports of all lodge assets and resources, monetary and other.

40. In Art. 111 re-word as follows: A newly established lodge is free to adopt its own name and designation.

43. In Art. 112(a), re-word as follows: . . . signed by not less than 20 respectable persons who are

insurable and who are not, members of the Society. Transfers from other lodges may be considered charter members of a lodge, at the discretion of the local lodge.

42. Add to Art. 112(b): . . . and shall be accompanied by the 20 applications for new membership.

43. Add to Art. 112 new (e) as follows: The Supreme Lodge will then send a representative to the lodge for the purpose of organizing the lodge, electing officers, and giving basic lodge organizational instruction and general information about the SPJST Society.

44. Add to Art. 112 new (d) as follows: After a new lodge has determined that it has sufficient members, including transfers and juveniles, it may request the Supreme Lodge to be formally chartered in accordance with the wishes of the members and the Supreme Lodge ritual.

Delete present Art. 113, since all of the above replaces and supersedes it.

Fraternally, Nick A. Morris SPJST — To The By-Law Committee: These proposals that I am sending you are not in the SPJST ByLaws. I would like for you to read them and to consider and/or adopt them.

1. All SPJST officers and directors of the home office must pass a doctor's physical before they can be elected to any office.

2. Delete the word "Supreme" in the by-laws or wherever used: Use Home Office or officers, State

Office or officers, etc.

3. (a) When a proposal is read to the delegates at the convention and adopted by the delegates, it must be put in the by-laws word for word as read by a delegate or by the By-Law Committee. (b) If the proposal is to be corrected or changed, it must be brought back to the floor and read to delegates, explaining changes and voted on again.

4. (a) When an officer or director reaches the age of 65, he must retire or can complete his term of office. (b) Any member of SPJST who becomes 70 years of age, cannot be elected delegate or serve on committees. This can also apply to local lodges, if passed by delegates.

5. The Home officers of SPJST and the directors cannot have or send a referendum to delegates of the last convention to vote on an increase of salary or change of the by-laws asking for more authority from convention to convention.

Proposed By-Law Changes submitted by Delegates and Members from Lodge 47, Seaton.

Article 4. Delegates (a) The convention of the SPJST is composed of delegates elected from among active and full-benefit members of the local lodges. Every lodge has the right to elect a delegate on a numerical basis from its membership, according to the following scale: 1. From 30-150 members over 16 years of age, one delegate, 2. For each additional 150 members, one additional delegate 3. A lodge attaining an additional 150 members between the annual meeting and 60 days before the convention may elect an additional delegate.

4. Remain the same.

Article 4. (e) Method 4. The substitutes are elected in the same manner as the delegates.

If any one of the elected delegates cannot go to the convention, for whatever reason, the substitute with the highest number of votes will fill the first vacancy. The same procedure is continued until all substitutes are depleted, in which case additional suibstitutes are elected if needed. In such case, the first substitute does automatically become a delegate. The substitutes and delegates are not paired. Election of another substitute for the last substitute will be held and previous elected substitutes will advance one place.

Article 7.

The regular convention is held once every four years in compliance with the laws of the State of Texas. If a matter arises between conventions that needs the approval of the delegates, the Supreme Lodge may conduct a referendum by polling the delegates by Such action will be accompanied by an adequate explanation. With the same number of votes based on previous convention, such ballots to be mailed to a CPA marked "ballots," opened, and counted by the CPA and results presented to the next regular or special meeting of the Supreme Lodge.

Article 13.

The following committees appointed by the chairman and vice chairman of the convention will function during the convention, except the committee on salaries is to function four years before and during the convention. To be effective immediately.

Article 23. add 7. Cannot be elected after attaining the age of 65 years on January 1st of the convention year.

Article 27.

In event of death, resignation, incapacity or incompetence of any member of the Supreme Lodge, Chief Medical Examiner, editor, or state youth director, such vacancy will be filled by the Supreme Lodge, excepting the office of the president, and directors. The office of the president will be filled according to Article 31 (a). The office of the director will be filled by his substitute. If a director is absent two consecutive times, the office of the director will be filled

8 by his substitute and draw director's pay.

Article 36. (y) The Supreme Lodge shall ap-

portion annual premium refunds on certain certificates to be paid to the members from the Mortuary Fund. The premium refund scale shall be made in view of the current operations and financial condition of the Society, and shall be recommended by the actuary of the Society. The Supreme Lodge may exclude certain classes of certificates from premium refunds or certificates on which less than five full years' premiums have been paid and may place any other limitation on the premium refund scale it may deem necessary and equitable. The manner and time of payment of premium refunds shall also be approved by the Supreme Lodge. The Supreme Lodge will remit current rate of postage for stamps and envelopes per refund check to local lodges annually to help pay their mailing expenses.

Article 38. (b) The Supreme Lodge shall invest all of the excess of the mortuary funds over $50,000 not necessary for payments of death claims, in real estate loans or firstclass real estate, but for not more than 66 2/3% of the appraised value of such real estate and stocks and other securities in accordance with the insurance laws of the State of Texas. Loans may be made to an SPJST lodge for lodge land and building for full value up to $100,000 and for not more than 66 2/3% of the appraised value above $100,000. (Effective immediately).

Article 45.

The contents of the Vestnik are managed by an SPJST member, elected by the convention as editor. He must possess journalistic lualifications, must know the Czech and English language fluently and should have ample organizational, journalistic and general education.

A seven-member publication committee, elected by the convention, lecides about the objective content )f the organ. This seven-member !ommittee shall also know how to read and speak the Czech and English languages.

Therefore it is our recommendation that the format of the index be set up by article number and stating what subject it covers and the page number that this is to be found on very quickly, and a cross reference by subject matter.

Also consolidation of like subjects under one article with sub headings, ie, all terms covering the conducting of lodge business meetings be placed under one article with the understanding that it may be amended as needed. 1. Articles 52 and 56 were reviewed. It was recommended that these two articles be amended to include "An examination by physical measurement centers," since it is so hard to get our applicants to go to a doctor for a medical exam due to the long period of time it takes.

It is also to be changed in the sales representative's rate. book.

The fee for one complete examination and report shall be established by the Supreme Lodge. The Society will not be responsible for any expenses that may be incurred in the examination beyond those authorized by the Supreme Lodge.

2. Article 80 of our by-laws be taken out and the Supreme Lodge And the actuary decide how much insurance to retain.

3. Article 13(d) be deleted.

4. Article 53(e) remain.

5. Article 61: the word "absence" be replaced by "in lieu."

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members: There has been another enjoyable entertainment added for all the members of our SPJST Lodge 74, every Friday night, starting at 7:30, until 12, headed by Sister Frances Parrish. It is really a great treat of good fellowship and socials for all the members of all ages. We really do appreciate the wonderful support the adult members are giving the youth.

These types of socials and entertainment have been going on for two weeks now. There were many cookies and sandwiches, plus cheese and other snacks free for all the members to enjoy; these goodies and snacks were furnished by some of our hard-working supporters of our youth and the lodge. Thanks to all of you. Mildred and I were there for the first time on Friday, March 19th, and I don't think you could find any better and more enjoyable fellowship anywhere than what we had. There were about 7 groups of domino players and they really enjoyed themselves. Mildred and I played with Mr. and Mrs. Bob Blackstone; they were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Hafner. (Mr. Blackstone is employed in Saudi Arabia). The domino playing and roller skating took place after our regular games. I mentioned before that we played every Tuesday night last year.

At this dance Sister Mary Bean, Sister Creola. Wilcox and Brother James Wilcox worked at the ticket booth. Mr. and Mrs. Baker, our hard-working members, worked in the refreshment room. I can't see how we could do without you, because you do so much for the lodge and in the refreshment room. We also have a group of fine workers: Brothers Phillip Vaden, Larry Nelson and Sister Erma Marsh, are faithful workers, and we are also proud of you who do so much for the lodge. Brothers Billy Bobalik, Gene• Merlele, James Wilcox, Jack Parrish, Rudy Hafner, and other trustees were present overseeing and doing a good job of seeing that everyone in attendance at the dance was comfortable and enjoying themselves.

We had a record that is really outstanding, there were 61 new members added to our lodge and SPJST Society. All of you keep up the good work.

Sister Dorothy Smith and Sister Sheryl Smith are really doing a good job, as well as many others, also. We are proud of all that you do for the SPJST. So long . . . for now.

Sister Rosemarie Banik, youth leader, reported that at the April meeting the youth club will have an Easter egg hunt and a kite flying contest. She also gave the dates for the volleyball practice and the dates of the playoffs.

Sister Banik said that June 27 was' set for District YAD and July 31 for the Royalty Contest. Denise Banik and Randy Pavelka will represent our lodge as our king and queen candidates. The March birthdays of members present were: Dawn Pavelka, Ruby Pavelka, Jimmy Moran, and Bennie Beran. We hope they all have many more healthy and happy birthdays.

The committeemen were called on to give their reports. Sister Dorothy Banik gave the kitchen report, and thanked everyone who worked, espedially Sisters Ruby and Denise Pavelka for helping while she had the flu. Hope Sister Dorothy is feeling better now.

Brother Eugene Pavelka gave the floor report. He commented about the lights going out a couple of weeks ago and everyone had to dance in the dark. He also thanked everyone who worked and helped at the door.

Brother Gene Edward Pavelka gave the report for the bar and also thanked everyone for working.

In the trustees report, Brother Ernest Banik stated that they had given Brother Fred Mach the go ahead on adding a storage closet in the youth club room. He also brought to the floor the recommendation to purchase some emergency lighting to keep on hand for nights such as we had experienced a few weeks ago.

New members voted into membership were: Joe George Tepe, Gary Wayne Hargraves, Jeremy John Mach, and Mildred C. Steinke.

Sister Rosie Wood of the Special Entertainment Committee asked that all the ladies (and the men, too, if they wish to participate), get out their old hats and decorate them some way so they will be unique and different. An Easter parade is being planned for the April meeting. She said that if you don't have a hat you might try using a cardboard box or a paper bag or, as she said, maybe a bed pan if it will fit, and decorate them up, in some way. Prizes will be given. Sure sounds like fun. Come and see or participate: The door prizes were won by Barbara Pavelka, and Robin. Breitkreutz.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.

Before I close I would like to tell you about the trip 48 or so of our members took to Lodge 177, Academy on March 7th for a benefit dance. It was a day that we had planned and looked forward to for some time but something else happened that we had also been looking forward to — it rained. Just as everyone decided to board the bus it started coming down. We made it pretty well without getting too wet. Everyone found their seat and got settled in for our journey. As the bus proceeded on the way, Brother Lynn Brown started to yell, there was something wet and cold going down the back of his neck. The roof of the bus had a leak and a steady stream was pouring on the top of his head.

Luckily someone had brought a roll. of paper towels along which were stuffed in the leak and it was repaired in no time. After taking care of that, everything settled back down and in what seemed to be a very short time, we had arrived at Lodge 177. Departing the bus we were greeted by friendly and familiar faces. They certainly do have a nice and spacious hall. We all went in and found a table. Then I suppose everyone was asking the same question, "Where is the powder room?" After everyone had taken care of their business and were again settled back at the table the music was beginning. The dance floor is wonderful and so big. When you have danced across the whole thing I think you could almost say that you had "Waltzed Across Texas."

12 Since we had arrived around 2 p.m. it was decided we would start back home around 7 p.m. While everyone was inside having a very good time the raindrops were still coming down outside. The bus had to park a short distance from the hall so we all had to do a little puddle jumping to get back on the bus. In front of the bus there was a puddle that looked more like a pond; it was too big to jump so Brother Charlie Pavelka swept his wife off her feet and carried her across. He said he didn't have a coat to throw across the puddle for her to walk on. Now I saw this happen, so I can assure you that chivalry is not completely lost.

In the process of getting the bus turned around and headed back to Elk, we found a soft spot in the parking lot and you guessed it, we were stuck. The more able bodied men got out to push. Can you imagine seeing these men pushing that big We bus, but they got us out. Brother Gene Edward Pavelka was a little unfortunate though, he fell down. Now that that was taken care of we were on our way again, being serenaded by the Lodge 35 choir which was directed by President Breitkreutz, himself. Since his wife didn't get to go along he did this to pass the time. Brother Vernon Wood made a final check to the back of the bus to make sure all of his children were all right.

We arrived safely and soundly back at Elk with everyone ready for the next trip.

Putting all fun aside I would like to say that on that day we saw what fraternalism, brotherhood and love for your fellow man really means. I would like to commend Lodge 177, Academy and everyone connected with the benefit dance for doing such a good job. They showed that people still care.

The attendance was cut down possibly due to having to make the trip to Star Hall in a nice rain and, incidentally, as I write this at 6:40 a.m. the next morning, rain is still falling and my rain gauge showed 1 1/2 inches when I left home and we are sincerely thankful for this needed moisture.

Even though our group was small we really enjoyed singing those old favorites and those of you who missed this session, missed an enjoyable evening. Let's all come out next time even thought it is raining or what have you and let's make our club outstanding and to really make it outstanding we have to put our shoulder to the wheel and push just a little harder and before you know it we will have a Choral Club that really is outstanding.

After rehearsal we had a short business meeting discussing our proposed bus trip to Rosenberg on April 24th and since there was not enough of us to make a final decision we postponed this to our next regular rehearsal which will be on Tuesday, April 13th, at 7:30 p.m. Please come out and help us make a final decision. You'll be glad you did.

I think I'll begin by welcoming four new colleagues to the ranks of letter writers to the Vestnik. What I'm referring to is the two new reporters and their alternates for the youth of District V. The teen reporter is Carla Adams of Lodge 88 and her alternate is Carol Janik of Lodge 142. The junior reporter is Clara Schuhmann of Lodge 176 and her alternate is Bobby Allbritton of Lodge 88. I will be expecting to see at least a couple of letters from these young folks.

I'd like to thank Lodge 142 for hosting the District V spring meeting. I would also like to thank our distinguished guests who shared the day with us. "Uncle"

Joe Skrabanek, Rest Homes director, was there as was Brother Leonard Mikeska, Supreme Lodge secretary, and Brother Jerry Mikulas, also from the Supreme Lodge.

Supreme Lodge President Brother Nick Morris was kind enough to visit us and rendered a version of "Beyond the Sunset" to honor our departed members. Last, but not least, Brother Rudy Sefelk and his beautiful wife Maxine honored us with their presence. Rudy told us about an amusing and novel way to "fry chicken." Get him to tell you about it some time.

This was also time for election of officers and the officers fel.

1976-77 are Jerry Prochazka, president; Tom Caraway, 1st VP; Harry Schuhmann, 2nd VP; Tillie Helmcamp, secretary; Tom Lostak, treasurer; Richard Wahlberg, District V youth counselor; and his assistant is Dan Berry; plus our dependable flab bearer, Eugene Sefcik. Our new Miss SPJST for District V is Miss Becky Smith.

Becky did a tap dance to "Sweet Gypsy Rose" and gave a special speech saying why she was glad to be an American. I offer her my deepest congratulations and wish her the best at the convention in June as I know we all do.

On our sick list this week are Ruby Earhart, mother of Carleen Carlock, and mother-in-law to one of our Thursday night callers, Ed Carlock. Hope she's out of the hospital soon. Also, John Zemko is in Heights Hospital after a very serious abdominal surgery. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope he is home soon. Mike Trefell has been feeling poorly lately and we hope he feels better real soon. It looks like Margaret Allbritton has recovered from the flu and we're glad to see her out and about again.

Edgar and Edna Ruppert, Allen and Bernice Coppoch had an anniversary, but did not give the number of years; Phillip and Melva (no last name given) 3 years; and our visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Weiss and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rothermel, from Brenham. We wish all our celebrants many more happy times and extend an invitation to our visitors to see us again soon.

The Birthday Club Sisters will hold their luncheon and card party on Wednesday, April 7th. The monthly lodge meeting will be on Monday, April 12th, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Texas Dutchmen will be playing Friday night, April 2nd, and the Blumes on Saturday, April 3rd. We regret that Sister Sophie Olsowski was unable to attend the anniversary celebration to receive her SPJST 50-year pin. District III Director Sid Pokladnik and Sister Justine Pokladnik later delivered the pin to her home and enjoyed a visit with her.

I guess everyone saw Brother Robert Duron, the only charter member of this lodge, attending and enjoying the Sunday celebration.

our Czech program has received from SPJST is the generous use of facilities at SPJST Lodge Praha in Taylor where we hold our annual Conference of Czech Teachers and Students. This year's conference will be held on Saturday, April 10th, and registration will begin at 3 p.m. with the conference starting at 4 p.m. Afterward, there will be a barbecue supper and polka dance with music by Joe Patek and his orchestra. The conference will focus on some of the serious problems concerning Czech language programs in the schools such as the recent decision at Texas A&M University to discontinue instruction in the Czech language. These issues are important to everyone concerned with the promotion of Czech language studies in Texas and we are hoping that this year's conference will result in some constructive action towards strengthening our Czech language programs in the schools.

Mr. Morris showed us an interesting film on Czechs in Texas and we saw the impressive library and museum which is maintained at the Supreme Lodge.

Houston, Texas March 20, 1976 Dear Readers: The SPJST Convention is closing in on us and before we know it delegates will be spending from 3 to 4 days debating and making decisions on how to improve our present administration. For the past 4 years we grew by leaps and bounds. How many of you remember the time when the announcement was made, that the SPJST had succeeded in reaching the goal of our first million dollars?

Now we have surpassed the first and our gains, financial and in membership, are tremendous, when you realize the SPJST operates in only one state. As our Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris said, credit goes to everyone from the top to the last one in line. We have cooperation and this is essential to produce a healthy Society.

I am very much surprised that our Vestnik carries so few remarks or suggestions for our forthcoming convention. As I remember in the past our old timers were always on their toes to express and view their opinions in our Vestnik.

15 Now they are retired and on the sideline and many of these aggressive men are resting peacefully after many years of struggle and their love in their hearts for our SPJST. In the Vestnik of March 17th, 1976 there appeared a letter in reference to the free press and the freedom of our editor, saying that the editor's responsibilitiy lies ultimately to the membership and the delegates. This is very much in error and I was surprised that the editor omitted his usual remark to correct this statement.

The editor's position is elective, by the delegates in the convention, as any office of the Supreme Lodge — officers, directors, and all necessary committees, but the employees of the Supreme Lodge are placed as deemed necessary by the officers of the Supreme Lodge.

The editor is solely responsible to the seven-member Publication Committee, which also is elected in the convention. Only on consulting the Publication Committee, the Supreme Lodge has the final word for the editor's dismissal.

Fraternally, Frances Olexa - SPJST — MINUTES OF THE DISTRICT V MEETING Dear Members, Our District V meeting was held at Lodge No. 142 Stefanik of Houston. President Jerry Prochazka convened the meeting at 1:35, and Flag Bearers Eugene Sefcik and Gary Ermis presented the colors and led us in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

The meeting was turned over to District Youth Counselor Richard Wahlberg for the Miss SPJST Contest. Becky Smith, who was the only contestant, performed a, tap dance and gave a good talk on why she was glad to be an American.

Lodge No 142 President Henry Linhart gave a warm welcome to members and guests. Secretary Tillie Helmcamp read the names of deceased members since last spring's meeting. Then Sister Erline Janik presented the memorial service with the youth placing carnations in memory of these members and SL President Nick Morris giving a beautiful rendition of the song, "Beyond the Sun-

She read the minutes and these were approved with a minor correction. She read a letter from First Vice President T. E. Caraway who explained that he was absent because he had to be at the Longhorn Recreational Laboratory.

Sister Alice Jochen and Brothers Charlie Matcek and Eric Stein were appointed on the Auditing Committee. Sisters Lowrina Lindemann and Lillia Mae Peter and Brothers John Ordener, A. J. Bristik, and Alvin Sefcik were appointed on the Ballot Committee.

Treasurer Tommy Lostak report-

District Director A. L. Hilsher reported that 1975 was a good year and that our sales representatives did a great job; we had the largest gain in assets. He visited many lodges and installed officers in several of the lodges. He hoped we will be able to make loans soon for he gets many requests. Brother Hilsher stated he has been in this work as an assistant a long time and enjoys it and will be a candidate for the position at the convention.

District Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska reported that the district wrote 936 members and $3,736,000 insurance in 1975. Top sales representatives were: Helen Hegwood, Ann Monroe, Della. Kadlecek, Agnes Lesak, E. E. Cameron, Agnes Miculka, Georgia Lostak, Sidon Tumis and Mildred Holeman. New sales representatives are: Pearl Hanka, Georgia Lostak, Rosalie Kocsis, Audrey Kaluza, and David Brinkley; one representative (Ernie Hanka) is inactive due to illness. She held six seminars and traveled many miles to lodges. Feb-

ruary's top representatives were: Della Kadlecek, J. M. Skrabanek, and Helen Hegwood. The district quota is $3,200,000 and up to date 8910,000 has been sold. Evelyn attended the FIC Convention and Texas Fraternal Congress.

District Youth Counselor Richard Wahlberg, who was assistant until Marlene Caraway resigned, complimented her highly on doing a great job. He reported that '70 youth were at camp and 47 at District YAD; the district camp will be announced soon. He stated that it is a pleasure to work with the youth.

Rest Homes Director reported that he is glad to report that the remodeling required by the government is completed. He stated that both homes are run capably and are filled and have applicants waiting.

SL President Nick Morris presented Tommy Lostak with two checks: $150 for the district fund and $1,607.55 for the youth fund.

Pre-convention reports by the officers will be in the April 14th Vestnik. He stated that 1975 was a very good year with a net gain of 1,508 members and $8,199,891 net gain in insurance; he and the Supreme Lodge are cognizant that the sales representatives are responsible for this growth. We now have 50,956 certificates and $98,008,444 in insurance. He stated that the 7 percent refund to lodges amounted to $99,829.37 and the premium refund amounted to $170,159.36 Brother Morris reported that since the convention, 6 lodges con-

strutted new buildings (2 of these in our district: No. 81 and No. 142) and 5 new lodges were formed: No 176 and No. 181, in our district. He asked Sister Hanka to extend his greetings to Brother Ernie Hanka.

Brother Morris reported that it is a continuing fight far the fraternals as each legislature comes up with something. We will not have to be licensed as there is no misrepresentation in our Society. He stated that the By-Law Committee is doing a good job in deliberating what is good for the SPJST. Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska stated that there are two kinds of benefits in insurance death and living. The SPJST paid out $800,000 in death benefits and $270,000 in lodge and premium refunds. Our assets have increased to 22 million and the net interest rate is 6.09 percent on investments.

Brother Mikeska, reported that the loans demand is so great that we cannot meet all of them. There is an allocation for each quarter and that is divided equally among the seven districts. He stated that all the officers do their best for the good of our Society.

Jerry Mikulas extended greetings from Financial Secretary Ben Zabcik. Brother Zabcik has announced his retirement at the end of this year and Jerry announced that he is a candidate for the office and asked for our support.

Editor Rudy Sefcik reported that he attended the Publication Committee meeting the day before. He stated that it is a trying job to be an editor but he has good cooperation from the committee. He stated that the committee had only six questionable letters to check on in the past 3 years. The committee decided that membership would be deprived of a service if the Vestnik were cut down from a weekly publication. He further stated that the committee would recommend to the convention that the Vestnik be in tabloid form, which would save us money. Brother Sefcik said that there have been changes made in the Vestnik since the last convention in order to improve it.

Auditing Chairman Charlie Matcek reported that the committee found the books in order and Sister Mary Schenburn moved that we accept the report, seconded by Brother Victor Werner, and so approved. Brother Matcek invited

us to come to the Czech Fest at Rosenberg on April 23rd, 24th, and 25th.

Brother Louis Hanus announced his candidacy for District V Director. Brother Prochazka read a resolution prepared by Brother Hanus honoring Brother Hanka for his many years of service to the SPJST in the Supreme Lodge, in the district and in our lodge.

Brother Hanus moved that the resolution be made a part of these minutes, seconded by Brother Alvin Sefcik, and so approved. * * RESOLUTION Whereas, on March 2, 19'75, an incapacitating illness has continuously since that date hospitalized our beloved friends and brother, ERNEST J. HANKA. And whereas, Brother Hanka served as a member of the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST as the director of District V from 1966 through 1975, and also as the Steering Committee Chairman of Lodge No. 88, Houston, for the XXI SPJST Convention hosted in Houston in 1972; and Whereas, under Brother Hanka's guidance as attorney, countless hours of legal services were donated to members and various lodges in District V, and his legal expertise and leadership have assisted District V in reaching heights it would not otherwise have attempted to climb; and Whereas, his footprints on the sands of time shall ever be evident in the SPJST Society; and Whereas, it is the desire of the members of District V that Brother Hanka be given recognition for his fraternal work and his love and devotion to his fellowman; Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved That District V of the SPJST in open meeting on March 21, 1976, express to our beloved brother and friend, Ernest J. Hanka, its sincere gratitude for his friendship and generous contribution to the cause of fraternalism; that his unselfish efforts and achievements be properly noted and that this resolution be spread upon the minutes of this meeting.

Officers and Members of District V * * Tillie Helmcamp moved that we change our spring meeting to the first Sunday in March due to the conflict with the Longhorn School,

seconded by Evelyn Mikeska. This was discussed and conflicts were found with this date also, so Brother Schuhmann moved we table the motion, seconded by Brother Stein, and so passed.

Brother Hanus made a suggestion to the delegates that they propose a by-law stating that any lodge member attempting to influence any other member as to how to vote should be expelled from the lodge.

Brother Harley Cox of Lodge 88 announced that a great day is coming up at his lodge and that is an all-day Bicentennial Celebration on Sunday, July 4th. There will be lively entertainment outside and inside from 11 a.m. till 10 p.m. with several bands and all kinds of fun for young and old.

Brother Schuhmann thanked Lodge No. 142 for the good dinner.

He announced that Lodge 175 invites all to the Czech Fest in April and that Lodge 173 invites all to Galveston to the Oleander Fest on May 14th and 15th and the Bicentennial Celebration there on June 26th and 27th. The festivities began at noon with a delicious turkey dinner. My compliments to all who helped in the kitchen. The food was really out of this world! Our choral group presented a variety of songs immediately following the dinner. We sang a selection of seven songs, including, "Aj lucka, lucka," "Cerveni Vino," and "Battle Hymn of the Republic," to name a few. Following our portion of the program there was a variety of speakers and presentations. Men the children of the lodge put on a bicentennial program. It was a very enjoyable day for all who attended.

Our telephone committee will not notify you of our next rehearsal.

Dear Members, Lodge No. 13 held its monthly meeting Sunday, March 21st at 2 p.m. The, meeting was called to order by Vice President Jim A. Bayer.

Led by Patti Tydlacka, the pledge of allegiance was recited by the members in attendance.

The minutes were read by Secretary Olga Nimtz and were approved as read, with one correction.

Treasurer Mildred Horak gave the treasurer's report. She also gave a report, that we made a profit of $3,000 on six dances, which we all were very happy over.

Financial Secretary Magdaline Lselt gave her report and it was approved.

Joe Milburn, chairman of the building committee, stated that he would have a report on the building expenses, at our next meeting.

District V Sales Representatives and their spouses are enjoying a de-

licious banquet meal at Lodge 88, Houston.

Under new business, Werner Jatzlau is to check and see about a black light to be used, with the ticket stamp.

Mildred Horak was appointed to buy different items for the kitchen to be used, when the hall is rented for a wedding or celebration. She also is to see about a popcorn machine. Cynthia Krenek volunteered to price a popcorn, machine at

different places in Austin.

There also was a discussion on building a new beer stand on the outside and having the ground paved where the old hall stood.

It was agreed to charge $10 for the use of the barbecue pits. Also, that there will be no charges to any of the churches in the community for using the pits.

MICHAEL IIEJNY Michael Hejny, a member of the Ennis Junior High School Band earned a 1st Division rating for a clarinet solo and a 2nd Division rating in an Interscholastic League contest held in Irving, recently.

Michael is the son of Brother William and Sister Marie Hejny of Ennis and the grandson of VICO President Joe B. and Sister Stacie Hejny of Temple.

Michael, his parents, and two brothers, Jeffrey and Scott, are all members of Lodge 135 in Ennis.

FRANK SEBIK OBSERVE 50th ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sebik of Abbott were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary with a mass on February 8, 1976 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Abbott, with a reception and dance following at SPJST Linden Hall at Earn Mott. The music was provided by the Vrazel Polka Band of Buckholts.

The celebrant of the mass was their nephew Rev. Bernard Pustejovsky of Plano, Rev. Jerome Duesman of Dallas, and Rev. Pechal of Abbott.

Hosts for the celebration were their daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Margie) Juricek, Pat Sebik, Gene Sebik all of Dallas, and Albin Sebtk Of Abbott.

The Sebiks are lifetime residents of, the Abbott and West area.

Mrs. Sebik wore a lace ivorycolored long dress with gold lining made by Jo Ann Nors. The headpiece was also made by Ms. Nors. Mrs. Sebik wore a necklace, a gift from her grandchildren made up of birthstones of each grandchild, and an orchid corsage.

Out-of-town relatives and friends attended the celebration from Houston, Galveston, Dallas, Arlington, Garland, Mesquite and Waco.

Everyone reported having a very enjoyable time.

A three-tired pole cake decorated with gold which held two doves with "50th" in gold was made by Mrs. Mona Zahirniak.

From The State Youth Director Time is drawing near for the Youth Leader's Retreat to be held April 3-4 at Camp Val Verde. Letters were mailed several weeks ago to all District Youth Counselors, youth leaders and assistants. I sincerely hope you are making plans to attend. The Supreme Lodge has been very generous to approve the funds for this worthwhile training weekend and we need you there to make it successful.

Big plans are in store for your interest, entertainment and fun in learning more about our Youth Department. This is your chance to meet other people over the state who share the same interests in our youth in the SPJST. There will be a session in craft this year. Dan Berry from Pasadena will have something of interest to present h ideas to use in the youth cwliutbs Activities will begin Saturday morning, April 3rd, at 9 a.m. It you are planning to arrive Friday afternoon or evening, please let me know so there will be accommodations for you.

The camp has promised that the cabins will be clean and ready for our group. Bring your bedding, toilet articles, comfortable clothing and shoes. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will riot need warm clothing, however, it would be wise to be prepared.

Dear Readers, Our youth held their March meeting on Sunday, March 14th during the adult meeting.

A discussion was held about the district meeting booth, YAD, charity for March and their March program.

It was decided to have their annual Easter egg hunt on Sunday, April 11th, at the Grant Building following their meeting.

An Easter party will be held on Friday, April 9th at the Grant Building, beginning at 7 p.m. Each member is asked to bring one decorated egg.

It was decided at both meetings, that our lodge will co-host the District VI YAD, with Lodge 32, Victoria; the YAD will be held in Victoria on July 18th.

Following both meetings and program, an afternoon of games, refreshments and lunch were enjoyed.

Ida Neubauer was the winner of the March birthday cake, while Gay Galetka won the adult door prize and Melissa Holy won the youth prize.

Don't forget to attend our April meeting on the 11th and bring the kiddies for our Easter egg hunt. See you then.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Sunday, March 14th, Lodge 130 and Lodge 84 of Dallas joined together to have a great afternoon.

First, Lodge 130 held their monthly meeting. Then from 3 to 4 p.m. the two lodges had a fun hour of volleyball. Some players even went so far as making their own Czech rules! This brings up the news that the volleyball tournament will be postponed until a later date. Another date to take note of is April 25, which is the date of the district meeting in Fort Worth, at Lodge 154.

After the girls were beaten two out of three games we all journeyed over to the Old Spaghetti Warehouse in downtown Dallas. We all

Our program had a bicentennial theme. Our youth leader, Mr. Robert Pokladnik, received the "Man of the Year" award. "Woman of the Year" was given to Geraldine Pokladnik. Mr. Pokladnik accepted the award, saying she would have been very proud. We are very proud our youth leaders received these honors.

Burial was in Marak Cemetery, Marak, under the direction of Harper-Talasek Funeral Home.

Survivors are his wife, Stazie Horelica, of Temple; 3 daughters, Mrs. Adolph (Clara) Marak of Buckholts, Mrs. Ernest (Olga) Gingles of Temple, and Mrs. Bobby (Betsy) Mayer of Irving; two brothers, Otto Horelica and Adolph Horelica. both of San Antonio; six sisters, Mrs. Millie Sparta of Wharton, Mrs. Clara Baca of El Campo, Mrs. Maty Buchfield, Mrs. Gustie Sturm and Mrs. Gertrude Nachas of San Antonio and Mrs. Lillie Hundle of Cameron, and 10 grandchildren.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Svornast Jihu No. 15, Buckholts, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, HENRY W. HORELICA, age 73, of 1604 E. Adams, Temple, died on March 3rd, 1976 in his home at 5 p.m. while sitting in his favorite chair watching the working traffic returned home.

Brother Horelica was born in Rowena in West Texas and came to Milarn County at the age of 2 Years. He was the son of the late Mrs. Louise Horelica Bolf of Buckholts and lived in the Buckholts area for 55 years.

Brother Horelica was a member of Lodge No. 15, Buckholts since 1920; also a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple.

On November 28, 1928 Brother Horelica married Stazie Sohn of Marak; they lived at Marak for many years where he was engaged in farming. He retired from farming and moved to Temple in 1957 where he then worked as a painter until his health began to fail.

Rosary was recited Thursday, at 7:30 p.m., in the Harper-Talasek Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday in the St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Rev. Tom Chamberlin officiating.

Jsou to Tyrolske elegie, Kral Lavra a Ktest svateho Vladimira. NedokoneenY Ktest sva taro Vladimira je zaostten proti politickemu absolutismu spojenemu s reakenimi kruhy cirkve. Plan k tomuto spisu i spis samotny je situovan do carskeho Rusks, avgak pornery jsou vylideny tak, to tato satira postihuje katdY absolut'stic IcY system, pitedevg irn c. k. rakousItY. Idea napsat satiru, v nit hlavni postavou by byl zesme gneny Kral, vznikla rovnet za Havliekova pobytu v Rusku. V Brixenu pak po pfeeteni pohadky nemeckeho spisovatele Moritze Hartmanna o irskein krali s oslima utima napsal Havlieek skladbu Kral Lavra.
