FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Ile did it a second time! Yes, by the report of insurance sales in the last issue, we see that Brother Chester Shmoldas sold a million dollars in SPJST life insurance in one year for a second time, which is a record for our SPJST Fraternal Life Insurance Society. Yours truly wishes to compliment him and all of our devoted sales representatives. Evidently they all realize that they have a worthwhile product to sell and convince their prospects that they are sincere, fraternal, and able to take care of their insurance problems for their future.

It is safe to state that very few of them, if any have taken courses in the ways to win friends and influence people, yet, by living the fraternal lives and adhering to the sound ideas set out by our founders in 1896 and 1897, they accomplished their purpose! More power to all of them and may 1976 be another big year for SPJST! There are three other sales representatives who deserve mention here and they are Sister Helen Hegwood, Lodge No. 88, Brother Daniel Schaefer, Lodge No. 141, and Sister Jeanette Peterson, Lodge No 18. * * In last week's issue you will recollect the tremendous amount of insurance sales --- $15,357,506, and 3,718 applications — attained by the sales representatives whose names appeared on the roster from

The endurance of the sales work by these productive representatives certainly was not in vain, for this type of involvement requires several elements to reach their goals which entails many personal sacrifices, patience, and encouragement to keep an individual on a steady pace for the good of our Society. Those of us on the sideline

cannot help but feel that the general membership wishes to extend its fraternal handshake with a sincere congratulations. THE SPJST IS PROUD OF YOUR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT! Since the pioneers of our SPJST left us with the three mottos: BENEVOLENCE, HUMANITY, and BROTHERHOOD, let us practice these ingredients and welcome re— ,- new xnembci s as well as our members of longstanding into our respective lodges.

As most of you know, a very essential element of each lodge is the new member. A new member generally represents additional shoulders to share the work of the lodge; the new members also represent the future leaders of the Society.

In most instances, it is remembered how you welcome and treat that new member(s) during the early acquaintance in the lodge and sometimes it will determine its future participation. Scientific tests show that you and myself form lasting opinions about individuals, ideas and situations within the brief time we are exposed to them. It is also known that once formed these impressions are difficult to change. Why? Because we do not wish to admit, even to ourselves, that we made a mistake.

portant that each member or guest be favorably impressed at the first lodge activity he or she attends.

Do you ask yourself, what can I do? Make the member feel welcome. Try to introduce the member to others. Make him or her feel that they belong to your lodge instead of being just a file number in your lodge office. Send the member home wanting to return to continue the lodge fellowship and enjoyment. Try not to embarrass a new member or overwhelm a member, however. A simple way for a lodge to do is to discuss how they can carry out these objectives. Good Luck! * * We wish to call your attention to the "Feature" article about the Czech folk ballet to be performing in Temple High School Auditorium February 11th. We have had inquiries about this coming attraction and thank Brother Calvin Chervenka, for supplying us with the information. o * 1976 will be noteworthy in many ways: nationally, it is our bicentennial year stressing the 200th birthday of our United States in July, statewide our State of Texas' 140 anniversary and for our SPJST Society it is our '79th anniversary since its official founding in July 1897 in La Grange, Texas. Actually, it is, in a sense, the 80th anniversary because the movement to have 'a Society separate from the mother organization (CSPS) began in 1896 Like our original 13 colonies, whose movement for independence began in 1775 and culminated in the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson in July, 1776, our SPJST declared its own independence in July, 189?.

All were the results of what were termed unfair regulations of the ruling factions.

This being our convention year, let us keep these facts of fairness, truth, integrity, re sect, fraternal'ism, the four basic freedoms (thought, speech, press and expression), etc., in mind.

—Albert Lupik * * Larry J. Marek, 19, of Route 2, West died Friday evening, January 23rd in West Community Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, with Rev. Bill Benish officiating. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in West, Brother Marek was a member of Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood. * * Charlie J. Vavra, 74, of 703 N. McKinney St., Ennis, died Wednesday morning, January 28th in the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown, after a long illness.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday in St. John's Catholic Church in Ennis, with the Rev. Lawrence Haberman officiating. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Ennis. Brother Vavra was a member of Lodge No. 25, Ennis.

On January 24th, 1976, the Supreme Lodge sponsored a social hour and dinner at the Ponderosa Inn in Temple honoring our seven district sales representatives and their spouses for making 1975 a banner year by writing 3,718 members for over 15 million dollars of insurance.

All the Supreme Lodge officers, directors, and their wives, together

with the State Field Manager and his wife attended, with the exception of Brother and Sister Matt Vanek, whose son underwenemajor surgery on the 22nd, in Houston, and they were there with him. Also Brother and Sister Victor Brenek were unable to attend due to a prior commitment. Brother Chester Shmoldas, our State Champion, who wrote over a million in 1975,

Brother Gary Ermis presented the colors and led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

It was reported that the following brothers and sisters passed away since the previous meeting: Jean Civetello, O. F. Furlow, Jr., Henry Semler, Ivy Gale Montalbano and Sophie Hruby. The members stood in respect to our departed members.

The minutes of the meeting for the month of December were read and approved by the membership.

Correspondence was acknowledged from Brother Herman Baethe, Brother and Sister Ernie and Pearl H'anka and the S.P.X.S.T. Rest Home No. 2.

The following brothers and sisters were reported on the sick list: Rebecca Ann Baethe, Marie Stayton, John Somyak, Cindy Mr and Willie Mae Wood.

Youth Leader Ruth Duncan announced her , assistants for the upcoming year: Sisters Clara Bros and Margaret Allbritton. In addition. past and upcoming youth activities were announced.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Harley Cox announced the upcoming events at the lodge and encouraged the members to participate. The Entertainment Committee for 1975 and 1976 was introduced and warmly applauded by the membership.

Various committee members were introduced and thanked for their outstanding work during 1975.

Representing the Birthday Club, Sister Mary Tilich thanked Brother and Sister A. L. and Birdie Hilsher for the Christmas dinner and also Sister Naomi Kostom for the donation. It was also announced that the cookbooks would be ready in February.

Sister Wanda Kennedy announced that a luncheon will be held on January 21 to honor all Birthday Club presidents and 22 other ladies who have devoted years of service to the Birthday Club. This program will also be a part of the• documentary film. The members were also invited to attend,

For the Choral Group, Brother T. S. Kostom announced that the group will resume rehearsals on Tuesday, January 20. It was also announced that the Choral Group presented an enjoyable program to the residents at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No 2 at Needville.

For the Dramatic Club, Brother Kostom announced that rehearsals are in progress for the Czech play to be presented Sunday, March 14.

District Youth Counselor Marlene Caraway announced that the rules for the Miss SPJST contest had been published in the Vestnik and urged all eligible young ladies to participate.

Sister Naomi Kostom presented a final report for Brother Hanka's appreciation day. Recognition was given to the various committees, including the Birthday Club Sisters, Entertainment Committee, Brother Louis Harms and the many individuals who had donated by various methods.

Brother Rudy Dybala reported for the Czech Concert Orchestra and thanked the membership for upporting the group. Rehearsals take place each Wednesday and many members of the orchestra participate in various other bands.

It was reported that this group

would be happ y to represent Lodge No. 88 at different SPJST functions.

LODGE NO. 175, FORT BEND Dear Members and Readers: The January meeting was called to order by President Clarence Krejci at 3 p.m. on January 11th.

We welcome them and we hope they become active members.

Sisters Bessie Franek reported on the new scrapbook she is compiling for Lodge 175. The old scrapbook was lost somehow throughout the past years. Sister Franek is trying to get some past history of the lodge for the scrapbook and we know that is hard to do but we also know Sister Franek will not give up. She has also begun a Scrapbook of our departed members. We are grateful to Sister Franek for helping keep up our lodge.

The financial secretary and treasurer's report were given by Sister Pat Parma. The report was accepted as read.

One of our members, Brother Felix IVIaresh, has received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting. We all thought it was about time because Brother Maresh has been going to night school off and on now for about 25 years. He is a supervisor in production planning at WKM in Missouri City. We hear that his whole family is proud of his achievement.

We held our election of officers.

Fraternally, Barbara Vacek, Secretary-Reporter — SP__ LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members: First, I would like to express my appreciation for the wonderful treat and award given to my wife, Mildred, and me at the Ponderosa Motor Inn in Temple. The Supreme Lodge gave a banquet for the directors, SL officers, district sales representatives and their wives, for the well-done job they did last year in having the great success in insurance sales for our SPJST Society. We want to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts!

It started raining when we left Temple for home. We arrived at 10:30 p.m. and it left us time to attend the dance at our Lodge 74 in Lovelady. Bill Lowery and the Sho Bills entertained the dancing fans at our spacious and beautiful ballroom. The members who participated in their lodge assignments during the dance were: Mary Beam, in the ticket booth; Sister and Brother James Wilcox Hester, Jerry 1Viichka, Phillip Voden and Jimbo Hafner worked in the refreshment room; and Mr. and Mrs. Baker, as always, worked in the kitchen. Of course, the trustees did a fine job overseeing that everyone attending the dance had an enjoyable evening.

Leta Mae Langham together with Cheryl Smith worked on our secretary's work until the next meeting. Be sure and come to the next meeting, which will be held February 9th, and, as you know, the secretary and other officers, plus committees will be selected to carry on the important jobs of the lodge.

Brother Rayford Crowson had been admitted to Bellaire General Hospital in Houston. He will undergo surgery and we all hope that he gets well soon. Andy Foulder's wife

I have just been informed that the social games nights will be resumed again. Brother and Sister Elwood Parrish volunteered to take the February 20th date and be in charge of the activity. Please call Frances Parrish for further information at 544-3112.

This meeting was well attended with twenty members and guests present. There was a very beautiful Christmas tree with lots of goodies under it.

v1 LODGE NO. 142, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters: SPJST Lodge No. 142 held its first monthly meeting of the new year Sunday, January 11th, at 2 p.m.

Our new president, Brother Henry J. Linhart, called our meeting to order. All present recited the pledge of allegiance to our flag and also stood and observed a mafrnent of silence for our departed lodge Brother John Janik, who passed away on December 18th, 1975 at the Sam Houston Memorial Hospital in Houston at the age of 83. We wish to extend our sincere sympathy to his bereaved family.

May he rest in eternal peace Sister Dorothy Havran read the minutes from our December meeting. After a minor correction the minutes were approved as they were read. All our correspondence was also read by Sister Havran.

Sister Rosie Tumis gave her financial secretary's report which was followed by a treasurer's report by Sister Erline Janik.

Brother Sidon Tumis gave us a very good local lodge report.

Sister Adela Stein gave a youth club report and thanked everyone for their help and donations.

Brother Henry Hermis gave us the Board of Tnistees' report. All the board's recommendations were approved.

Members who were in the hospital in the month of December were: Frances Cook, Henry J. Linhart, Ludwig Hamala. All were at home at the time of our 'last meeting.

New members accepted into our lodge were: Albert Rosniak, Johnie D. Coker, Dale Wayne Jozwiak, and Laverne June Sommers.

We welcome you as our new brothers and sisters of Lodge No. 142.

Under unfinished business, we discussed and approved a provision that if a member goes to the hospital for 3 days they get their premiums paid for 1 month.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, MUSEUM Dear Readers: It has been some time since I have given you a report on our LAM Department, so here goes.

LIBRARY — To our library we are adding new books everyday and we still have much room for good books. We also are getting more new readers who take advantage of this service and you, too, should be reading more books. We have books here on almost every conceivable subject, cooking, gardening, medical, health, farming, ranching, religion, stories, educa-

tional books and countless other subjects. These books are available to you for two weeks at no charge. You can either pick them up here at the library or we will send them to you by mail, you only pay the postage on them. What can be more fun for you. TRY IT! MUSEUM — Our museum recently has been filmed for Czechoslovakian television and will be shown in Czechoslovakia in May of this year on Czech TV and Mr. Karel Pech, who headed this filming, said our little museum is fantastic. This makes us very proud of the SPJST Museum and all of you fine donors are the ones to whom credit is due for making it better, it was your donations that have made it the fine educational institution that it is. Why, this morning, we will have a visit from one of the local schools of some fifty students and this happens several times almost every week and we are proud to show them through. If you have anything of ,a historical nature and you would like to have it represent your family in our museum we will be happy to accept it and display it in your family's name.

CHORAL CLUB Dear Readers: The Seaton Choral Club met last night for its regular rehearsal with the following members present: Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, Frank and Lillian Mikulec, Ralph and Cathy Milek, (Ralph is our accordionist and he is super), Paulina Kopecky, Martha and Alfred Klusacek, Willie and Adeline Kohutek, Annie Jakubec (our talented leader, Willie and Doris Provazek, Michelle Provazek, Otto and Matilda Harms, Ruby Bolton, Emily Stuteville, Bill and Lillian Kosarek, LaVerne and Johnny Vanicek, Laurin and Dorothy Gaines, Wallace and Elsie Jez and Leon and Vallie Zavodny. This was a fairly good turnout considering the cold evening, but we can do better. Let's all come for the next rehearsal on Tuesday, February 10th.

We started the evening with our regular theme song, "Musicians, Come and Play", and from there we went on to sing some of the old favorites and in spite of most of us having colds, we had a very enjoyable evening. There is something that singing does for everyone because, mainly during our singing, we totally forget our other troubles and completely relax. Why not start singing with us!

After the conclusion of our singing we had our regular business session in which we discussed several invitations to sing. Some were accepted and some were not, for

10 various reasons. We prevailed on our old officers to serve for another year; they have all done an outstanding job• and we love them.

The choral club dress was discussed and after much discussion, it was decided to give it back to the dress committee to work out the suggestions and bring it back to the next rehearsal. There being no further business before the club the meeting adjourned.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Birthday Club Sisters' regular monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 11. Guests are welcome and a delicious lunch will be served. On Wednesday, January 21, the past presidents of the Birthday Club Sisters were honored with a catered dinner and the awarding of plaques. The following are excerpts from the opening address by lodge President Louis Hanus: "This afternoon is a signal honor and privilege for me to address this renowned Birthday Club Sisters of Lodge 88. Today is another day of historical importance, because the plaque awards that will be given to the honorees will be filmed in color as part of a documentary film that was started last year. Usually in things you start there must be a coming together as a beginning. One beginning at Lodge 88 occurred when a few sisters of this lodge formed the Birthday Club Sisters on October 9, 1946, almost 30 years ago.

Today is another coming together, and a first beginning which marks another milestone in the important history of the Birthday Club Sisters. Throughout the years they have come together, kept together, and progressed to this proud day in which many of the faithful Birthday Club Sisters will be honored by receiving a plaque for their devotion, care, and faith they had is the club that has contributed so much to the progress of Lodge 88.

The accomplishments of the Birthday Club Sisters over the years have been many and is indicative of the pride and devotion they carry in their hearts for some thing they believe in. Their unselfish thoughts that caused their successes over the past years was

the simple benevolent, spirited words of 'Not what can the Birthday Club Sisters do for me, but what can I do for the Birthday Club Sisters?' To the honorees and other members of this fine group, Lodge 88 and its members would like to let you know that all of us are proud of you and wish to thank all of you sincerely for a job well done. We appreciate deeply the faith, loyalty, and devotion all of you carry for the club, because such ingredients are what makes Lodge 88 so great. May God bless all you for assembling on such a worthy and just occasion on behalf of the Birthday Club Sisters of Lodge 88."

The youth club will be going to the rodeo on Sunday, February 29.

Permission slips should have been passed out at the youth club's meeting this past Sunday and they are to be returned to the youth leaders. Ruth Adams and Louise Knapick have the pictures back from the Christmas program.

If you ordered some please see them in the Youth Room on Thursday nights from 7:30 until 9 p.m.

Don't forget that the Lodge 88 Anniversary is coming up in February and there will be games in the youth room for the children, so parents, please don't leave them at home.

Mike and Kathy Trefell spent a nice Christmas in Orlando, Florida, visiting their son, professional wrestler Dusty Rhodes. They visited Disney World, Busch Gardens, the greyhound races and St. Petersburg, Dusty had just returned from wrestling in Japan and wrestling for the world championship being held in Tampa, Florida.

They had a great time , and hope to be visiting him again, soon. I'd like to apologize to Mike and Kathy for taking so long for this item to get into my letter.

For the Friday, January 16th Gaylen Ackley and The Good Times dance, these folks had birthdays: Red Bankerr (sic), Liz Mikolajewski, Aileen Slominski, Linda Wehring, Bob Golden, Geraldine Belota and Joe Willie Kowis.

Also, if you are hungry after the dance, don't forget that the dining room is always open for breakfast after the Friday and Saturday night dances.

Following the rebirth of the Czech nation's independence in October, 1918, the lands of the Czech Crown — Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia — finally gained their precious national freedom, for which they had fought during the 300 years of bondage as lands of the Hapsburg inheritance, in the Austro-Hungarian empire. Together with Slovakia, which was a part of the Slav nation of the Great Moravian Empire in the IX Century, the Republic of Czechoslovakia was born. Slovakia suffered for almost 1,000 years after the destruction of the Moravian Empire, without schools or any other national identity under the Hungarian rule.

Barely six months after the republic became a reality in 1918 and enjoying its new national freedom, Czechoslovakia was attached

by Hungary in the southern part of Slovakia. The new republic had to defend itself at a time when its army was in the beginning stages of activation, being organized, and unprepared. However, during this national emergency all the people of the whole nation, aroused in the patriotic fervor to protect the motherland, came to the assistance of the new armed forces. The organized membership of the whole Sokol Society (just as in the days of October 1918) together with the French, Italian and Russian Legionnaires, quickly joined the ranks of the defenders — some of these brave legionnaires stopped in Houston on their way home. They could not cross eastern Europe because of the Bolshevik revolution and had to cross the Pacific to America on their way home.

Thousands of volunteer fighters in Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and Slovakia became part of the nation's army and among the young Sokol volunteers, was also the son of the composer Josef Suk. The Hungarian incident was quickly and successfully liquidated

by Czechoslovakia and in these turbulent times Suk conceived the beginnings of his masterpiece, "V Novy Zivot." The lyrics tell the story.

Since Czechoslovakia Sokolska Obec—The Sokol Society was then already preparing for the coming Sokolsky Slet (Olympics in 1920), for the first time in a free nation,

"TOWARDS NEW HORIZONS" (A NOVY ZIVOT) — continuation -Since the last article that appeared in our Vestnik January 14, 1976, I have received many requests for the lyrics of the above historical musical masterpiece of composer Josef Suk, who was the son-in-law of the great Antonin Dvorak, and wrote it for the Sokol Slet in 1920. With Brother John J. Pech's consent I am presenting the English lyrics from his new special choral arrangement just ompleted.

Furthermore, I would like to share with my readers, the historical events as told to me by Brother Pech.

To fully understand the meaning of these lyrics, we must always keep in mind the historical circumstances of the era when a corn-

11 the composer Suk completed and enlarged this composition into the inspiring festive masterpiece that it is and the title of which so eminently fits into our bicentennial year celebrations. The Sokolska Obec published the music which was enthusiastically performed at every occasion during Sokol activities and in concert halls everywhere.

Here then are the English lyrics from the special arrangement in the library of the Concert Choral Society: ''Vatra — a burning pile of wood used as a signal. *Sokol — same as the eagle in America, the falcon (sokol in the Czech language) is the national bird. Rest Home No. 1, at Taylor, by Henry Pokorny TV and the Schwenker Pharmacy for the guests to enjoy. Jimmy plays the piano and accordion for the guests and Stancie serves as a Red Cross Volunteer.

A large crowd gathered to watch the Super Bowl football game on January 18th, and the game room has become a busy place.

This makes me very proud of all of you because this more than doubled the quota set for the year. Brother Daniel Schaefer of Lodge 141, who wrote 61 members for $450,000, is the Underwriters Club winner; Sister Mildred Horak of Lodge 13, with 83 members for $161,000 and Brother Melvin Skrabanek of Lodge 17 with 23 members for $105,000, are the Pace Setters winners. CZECHOSLOVAK BALLET LU( 'NICA TO PERFORM IN TEMPLE Lucnica, a Czechoslovakian folk ballet group from Bratislava will perform in the Temple High School auditorium at 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 11.

This group has been highly received during its tours of 17 countries on four continents. The Temple performance will be only one of three in Texas on the current tour. The other performances will be in Texarkana and Big Spring.

Luicnica signifies a field or meadow, and it is in such places, even today, that Czechoslovakia's youth assemble to celebrate holidays and other festive occasions. When such natural surroundings are transferred to a theatrical setting, the impact on audiences is tremendous.

Since the group was first banded together in 1948, succeeding youth artists have maintained the common goals of the originals — to show the outside world all that is beautiful and typical of the country they so love.

Lyrical dances intermingle with the kind of virtucusity seldom encountered. Similarly, the music echoes traditions of ages past -- of romance and adventure interpreted in both simple and complex

"MYSTERIES OF THE

HOMELAND" AND VISITORS FROM PRAGUE Along with about 150 Americans of Czech or Slovak descent living in the United States, I received a letter from Prague dated the 23rd of September 1975 from Mr. Karel Pech, who is affiliated with Czechoslovak Television as a public relations man, director, scenic designer, and television actor. Since 1946 Mr. Pech has been affiliated with the "Narodni Divadlo" (National Theater). The purpose of the letter was to let us know that he and a colleague, Vaclav Nedbal, Slovak, were flying out of Prague via Pan American to New York. Mr. Nedbal was accompanying him as a cameraman and producer, and is

affiliated with Bratislava Television. The two of them were to crisscross the United States in filming (in color) and in sound material for a television series in Czechoslovakia called "Tajemstvi Doanova" ("Mysteries or Secrets of the Homeland"), in which they were going to show the contributions of Czechs and Slovaks in the United States to the development of the U. S., having in mind that in 1976 the United States was going to celebrate its bicentennial anniversary. MR. AND MRS. JOHN CHUPICK HONORED ON 50th ANNIV. The First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall of La Grange was the setting Sunday, December 28, 1975 for a reception given by Mr. and Mrs. Ballard Bennett of Wes-. laco honoring her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Chupick, on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Chupick was attired in a lime green chiffon floor-length dress, the bodice of which was overlaid with lime green lace. The long full sleeves ending in lace cuffs were lined with the same lace. A yellow rosebud corsage complemented the honoree's attire. Mr. Chupick wore a dark suit and a yellow rose boutonniere.

Their daughter was likewise dressed in a long formal and had a corsage of yellow rosebuds. Their son-in-law, grandsons and Mrs. Chupick's brother, Johnnie Bliznak of Houston, wore yellow rosebud boutonnieres.

The registration table was overlaid with a white outwork cloth and held a milk glass budvase with yellow rosebuds. Mrs. Annie Hruska, sister of Mr. Chupick, presided at the guest register.

A large arrangement of yellow roses, spider mums and gladiolus formed, a background for the refreshment table which was covered with a yellow net cloth. The centerpiece was an epergne arrangement of yellow rosebuds, white spider mums, holly and other greenery. It was flanked by five branched candelabra holding yellow tapers. The anniversary cake was a four-tiered white confection decorated with yellow roses and leaves.

Four round cakes formed the bottom tier and a gold "50" was atop the cake.

Served were the cake, varied kolache, assorted party sandwiches, pickles, mints, punch and coffee.

In the houseparty besides Mrs. Hruska were Mrs. Billye Graham of Omaha, Nebr., sister of Mrs. Chupick, Mrs. Heddie Chernosky of Houston, Mrs. Irene Bennett of Weslaco, Mrs. Ed. Sarrazin of Fayetteville, Mrs. Marie Kovar, Mrs. Sophie Webber, Mrs. Harry Vogt, Mrs. Alfred Gaii and Mrs. Adolph Matocha, Jr., all of La Grange All wore yellow rosebud corsages.

Tall baskets of greenery stood on each side of the stage, and potted plants and floral arrangements, gifts of friends, were set at vantage points for decor.

Many relatives and friends from throughout the state were in attendance to help Mr. and Mrs. Chupick celebrate the occasion.

Chupick were married in Houston January 14, 1926 at the home of Judge and Mrs. C. H. Chernosky, uncle and aunt of Mrs. Chupick.

The late Rev. Frank Horak officiated at the ceremony. The couple has one daughter,. Mrs. Ballard (Mary Frances) Bennett, son-inlaw Ballard Bennett; two grandsons, John and David Bennett, all of Weslaco.

Mr. Chupick began his business career with employment at the Schuhmacher Bank (now the La Grange State Bank). In 1916 he founded the Fayetteville State Bank, later became engaged in land business and then returned to the banking business. Most recently he served as Supreme Lodge secretary of the SPJST for 20 years.

Upon retirement from SPJST, he built the Balcones Mineral Corporation in Flatonia. After having sold his interest in it, he retired and moved to La Grange where he and Mrs. Chupick reside at 501 Sara Jo. He still, however, oversees his ranch in Atascosa County but says he is enjoying his retirement.

District II will hold its spring meeting on Sunday, March 28, 1976 with Lodge No. 47, Seaton serving as host lodge. The meeting begins at 2 p.m. * * District IV will hold its spring meeting Sunday, April 25, 1976, at the VFW Hall in Seymour, Texas. * * District V spring meeting will be on March 21, 1976 at Lodge No. 142 Stefanik, 5508 Nolda, Houston. * * The District VI spring meeting will be held Sunday, March 28, 1976 at the KC Hall in Wharton. From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Brothers and Sisters, A belated Happy New Year from all of us in the youth clubs of Lodge No. 84. We are, as well as all of you, looking forward to a wonderful and productive new year. We had a very good year in 1975, and are very proud of any achievements we have made. It has been a while since I have written so I will bring you up to date a little with our past and present activities. We, of course, had a wonderful turnout this past fall for the Fair, and our youngsters performed the May Pole dance and Beseda beautifully.

Later, we had our Halloween and Thanksgiving celebrations which also turned out to be great successes. Our Christmas projects consisted of, first, a performance by our dancers at the Merchants State Bank honoring a group of Senior Citizens who are unable to get out much.

Then on December 14th, we held our annual Christmas party at the lodge. Our mother lodge sponsors this event every year and we would like to thank them very much.

Our program was so cute. Everyone was asked to prepare a number among themselves and then present it. We really have some talented and creative children. The Choral Group of our lodge sang some beautiful carols in Czech and English and then there was a special visit from Santa.

Later, on December 20th, our club was invited by Old Town Shopping Center to sell Czech foods and perform there. It was part of a "Christmas Around the World" theme for their center. I am happy to say we were able to raise quite a bit for our treasury through this.

That brings us up to this month which I am sorry to say, has brought us some sadness. One of our youth leaders, Sister Geraldine Pokladnik, passed away. I must say, in this letter, that this lady was not just a wonderful person, but one of the true fraternalists in our organization. She loved the youth club and all the children involved. She worked hard in any capacity she could, until the end. Her contributions to our

club since she became a leader several years ago, will be a constant reminder of her humanitarian spirit. This month, at our January 25th meeting of the Junior Youth Club, we presented her daughter, Janet, who is president of the juniors, with a donation made out to the American Cancer Society in memory of Sister Pokladnik. This contribution is only a small way of saying thanks for all the things this great lady did for all of us.

We would also like to thank our District III director, Brother Sid. Pokladnik, and our vice president, Brother Adolph Salac, for being present at our meeting and sharing some very good thoughts and advice with us.

Next month we are planning a Valentine party for February 15th and a skating party on the 22nd.

LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Readers, The attendance at our monthly meetings has been good. We have planned several activities for the next month or so. The most talked about activity is volleyball.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 35, ELK Dear Members, President Steven Dulock called the meeting to order and also led the pledge of allegiance.

Secretary Charlotte Banik read the minutes and Mark Wood gave the treasurer's report.

We had three visitors, Mrs. Inez Zalman, Cathy Teirce, and Bob Wood.

We discussed old business: Honey Brown's bill for her skates, and a motion was made by Mark Wood and seconded by Terri Hand, and passed.

New business was about our volleyball games. We have a new volleyball coach and , her name is Debbie Gaulden. The recipes were also discussed. A motion was made that we get an 8-track stereo for our youth club room. Motion carried.

Eddie Banik won the door prize and will bring the February birthday cake. The meeting was then adjourned.

I am sorry that I didn't have a letter in last month's Vestnik, but we didn't have a regular meeting, we had a Christmas party for our lodge. All of our members 65 years and over were honored guests at the front of the stage. The honor-

Under old business we discussed the spring meeting.

Sisters Bessie Petr, Justine Andreason, Kathy Reznik, Pat Hubik, Carol Rejcek, Cheri Petr and Brother Robert Pokladnik are our youth leaders for next year.

We lost one of our youth leaders, Sister Geraldine Pokladnik, Her daughters are officers in our club and Brother Pokladnik is carrying on as one of our youth leaders. At our meeting, Sister Petr presented a card stating that our youth club had given a donation to The American Cancer Society in her name. This memorial was given to Janet Pokladnik, our president, who accepted for the Pokladnik family. We all loved our youth leader, Sister Pokladnik, and she will be missed.

After the meeting a birthday party was given for Kathy Pokla.dnik, Paul Manak, and Janet Prachyl.

On the 15th of February, we will have a meeting and Valentine party and on the 22nd of February we can go to either Pennywhistle Park or skating.

Funeral services were held January 25th at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel in Victoria with the Rev. George Gerber officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Vinyard Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Vinyard Funeral Home followed by a requiem mass at 10:30 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Interment was in Floresville Cemetery.

Brother Pavliska was born April 13, 1884 in Fayette County, Texas, but spent most of his life in Wilson County where he farmed and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and SPJST Lodge No. 107.

Brother Pavliska was married to Miss Cecilia Monak and she preceded him in death on June 26, 1945. On June 14, 1947 he was married to Mrs. Agnes Vincik.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. ,Agnes Pavhska; daughters, Cecilia Kubala of Dallas and Carelia Miculka of Vancouver, Washington; sons, Joe and William Pay-
