FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, November 9th, we attended the District VII fall meeting at Lodge No. 107, Floresville. The day was beautiful, warm and sunny, especially for this time of the year. We arrived at 12 noon and immediately ate lunch — delicious turkey and dressing with all the trimmings. The ladies regretted that they ran out of food, however, these things are to be expected, especially when you do not know for how many attending to plan. Once you have food left over and next time you do not have enough!

The meeting re-convened at 1:30 p.m. with a youth program and the business session, conducted with correct procedure by District VII president Bob Bayer and the District VII officers giving their respective reports.

SL President Nick A. Morris gave a report for the Supreme Lodge and the meeting ended for some fellowship visiting.

We will have some pictures of the meeting in our next issue; space is rather limited. Although the trip is rather long for one day, it was enjoyable and well worth seeing all of our long-time District VII friends.

Brother Bob Bayer is doing all he can to build enthusiasm among the lodges of District VII. * * Just before presstime, Friday, November 14, we learned that a television film crew from a Fort

Worth TV station had been taking shots of the goings on at the printshop — Cechoslovak Publishing Co. The program for which the film was made is "Inside Area 5" and will be shown on Channel 5, WBAP, Friday, November 21st, between 5 and 5:30 p.m. If you would be interested in seeing how the printshop operates, why not tune in. The feature mainly concerns Hospodar, the Czech paper published here, but our Vestnik is handled in the same manner, except it is not printed on the press

here at the plant, but is taken to Marlin to be printed and then brought back and processed in the same manner as will be shown on TV. * * What you would be, you can become. The desire ever before you justifies the. claim. To dream of good and to attempt to translate those dreams into action, prove the existence of those very attributes which you long to attain.

Do believe that nothing is too good to be true. It is already manifest and waiting to be applied.

Potentially, you are what you long to be. Take heart. To those who earnestly believe, all things are possible.

Mere desire is not enough. It must be buttressed by strong purpose.

There is a discontent which, if it makes you strive for better conditions, or to reach a better standard of life and conduct, becomes a hindrance. * * If yesterday was a dismal failure, then turn those failures into successes today. Josh Billings once said, "It isn't a disgrace to make a mistake. The disgrace comes in making the same mistake twice."

Someone has said that failure is a sure road to success, that failures that we make, if we profit by them, are steps that lead to success.

distinction of being a very successful man. How many times do you suppose that he failed before he finally attained success! Napoleon Hill once said: "Another thing learned while working with Mr. (Andrew) Carnegie was that if you make the best possible use of whatever tools or circumstances that come into your possession with the faith that you will attain your desires, better tools and circumstances will be mysteriously revealed to you. If you have a. purpose in mind which you desire to attain, the place to begin is fight where you stand."

Why is it that some men are constantly saying, "I have failed?"

Perhaps they have failed in some little thing. Perhaps they have failed for that day. They are gaining valuable experience from those failures, or should be. In reality a. man is not a failure until he declares himself incompetent. It certainly is an inferiority complex when one complains, "I am a failure because I have failed."

Success is like the tide. It ebbs, but it does not mean that it cannot return with undiminished strength. That is why your failures may, if you so desire, become the steps to success, and thus it is that life should begin each morning.

Richard C ervenka, 71, of Hallettsville, passed away in Stevens Convalescent Center in that city on October 27th. Funeral services were held on October 29th from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville, with burial in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

Brother Cervenka was a former Lavaca County Commissioner and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville.

Mrs. Mary Michna, 89, longtime resident of Wichita County passed away November 9, 1975 in a Burkburnett nursing home. Funeral services were held at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church in Burkburnett with Rev. Harry Fisher officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Wichita Falls.

Sister Dorothy Prasifka, who were visiting in Bordovice, Czechoslovakia, birthplace of his father 114 years ago. They also visited two weeks in Spain. Happy and safe traveling to you, from. our SPJST! * * Emil Vrana, 88, died October 30, 1975 in Weimar. Funeral services were held from Moravia Catholic Church on Saturday, November 1st. with Rev. Benton 'Thurmond and Rev. William Halata officiating.

SPJST Honorary President Edward L. Marek officiated at graveside rites. Brother Vrana was a wellknown ginner and farmer of ti .e Moravia community and was a member of Lodge Nova Morava No. 23 for 68 years.

ERNIE HANKA APPRECIATION DAY AT LODGE 88, HOUSTON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23 Dear Members: There will be another beautiful day added to the history of Lodge No. 88, and that is the Ernie Hanka Appreciation Day this Sunday, November 23rd.

Brother Ernie, as he is fondly called by his many friends, has done much for the SPJST. He has worked hard for the district, holding various offices and now being the District Director for several years. In our lodge he was first vice president for several years and president for two years. Brother Ernie did all the legal work for our lodge free of charge, for many years, and there is no way we can estimate the time he spent, the hours his secretary worked, and the amount of money he saved the

lodge.

Brother Ernie had a stroke in March and has been in the hospital since that time; he is now at the Golden Age Manor here in Houston. Now we members of Lodge No 88 decided to show Ernie our appreciation for all he has done by having a special day for him.

It is our way of sa,ying, "Thank you Ernie."

We invite the officers and personnel of the Supreme Lodge and their families, the editor and his family, the members of our district and all members in other districts who would like to join us on this great day of fraternal love for a dear brother. Each of you can help to make it a nicer day!

The lodge has hired three outstanding orchestras to play on that day, from 2 to 9 p.m.: The Texas Dutchmen, Knights of Dixie, and The Suniland Cowboys. The kitchen will be open from 1 p.m. on.

Our regular monthly meeting was held on November 2nd with Brother Matt Vanek, lodge president, presiding. The officers reported a very good response to the letter, which had been sent to our members in regard to a building fund. There were several cash donations received, as well as many offers of help and .support for a building project. Those of you who have not yet responded, please call your lodge officers as soon as possible and let them know your ideas on the project.

Plans were discussed for a GetAcquainted social for lodge members and their immediate families to be held sometimes in the spring.

Alfred Horelka was appointed to look into finding a location to hold the social. The possibility was also considered for using such a social as a fund-raising project for our building fund. Final plans will be completed at our next meeting.

If you are interested in this type of social, please come to our next meeting and express your opinion.

New members accepted into our lodge were: Dorothy and Doris Strelczyk.

Our next meeting date will be Sunday, December 14th, at 2 p.m. at the Boys' Club.

6 LODGE NO. 39, BRYAN Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our November meeting was held on Wednesday, November 5th, at 7:30 p.m. The meeting was well attended.

Our Christmas party has been set for Sunday, December 14th. A supper will be served at 4 p.m., with a dance following at 6 p.m.; this is for members and their immediate families. The lodge sisters are asked to bring a dessert of their choice.

LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members: We hope all of you are enjoying the extended summertime. Perhaps we should relish the sunshine and nice temperatures and store the memories of them for the coming winter which some predict will be

severe. However, many predictions prove unreliable, thankfully.

After the pledge of allegiance and opening of the meeting, Sister Christine Zich read the minutes in her usual efficient manner, and I feel compelled to give a few words of thanks to her because she does her job so well; despite the discussions, and palaver that takes place sometimes. I haven't heard a correction of her minutes all year.

We proceeded with ; our business and among decisions was one to hold our annual Christmas tree party and Youth Leader Brother Johnnie would like to have the children prepare some act to present that day. He will be calling you, or if you prefer, please contact him at 732-6034 for any assistance.

Performers please be at the lodge by 4 p.m. on the day of the program.

At this point permit me to urge all members to attend the monthly meeting on December 14th, one hour earlier, at 1 p.m. The extra time is necessary because on that day we will elect officers for 19/6 and also elect our delegates to the 1976 SPJST Convention. This is one of our most important meetings, so please make a special effort to be present. We don't need just some of you, we need all of you.

I regret the delay in submitting pictures from our 65th anniversary celehration. Maybe they will be published in the same issue as this report. In one photo• you will

Sister Martha Durham reported sending get-well cards to Sister Myra Collins, Brothers Russell L. Peak, Dennis Pustejovsky, James Beasley and Dwayne Owen, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Laymance, our lodge managers. Also on the sick list are Brother J. D. Waggoner and Louis Thomason, son-in-law of Sister Millie Bartek. He is at home after surgery for advanced arthritis. Mrs. Vlasta Dolkos called from Meadowbrook Nursing Home to state that her aunt, Mrs. L. Fort, is still in a coma and may be moved from Denton to Fort Worth soon. Her grandSon, Bruce, is fine after heart surgery. Brother Bill McClendon is able to walk on crutches now but Brother Richard Andres remains in the VA Hospital in Dallas. It was nice to learn that Sister Agnes Wruble is at home doing well after eye surgery.

Friends of Bilother Paul Foyt are asked to visit him if possible. He would enjoy your company.

We have as newlyweds from our lod'gfe, Brother Michael Oujesky and Donna Kennedy who were married on October 27th and are living at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He is a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army there. Best wishes!

There is a lodge dance scheduled for Saturday, December 20th, with music by Joe Lynn Krivanek's Rhythmaires, so get out those dancing shoes!

Don't forget, one hour earlier on December 14 for our monthly meeting, it will be nice to see you there.

Just before mailing my letter, I was informed that Sister Millie Waters was taken to the hospital suffering from an apparent stroke.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON HLAHOL DRAMATIC CLUB Dear Members: With all the hustle and bustle and one thing or another going on at our Lodge 88, the Hlahol Dramatic Club finally held the prescheduled annual party Sunday, November 8th, which was the only available date this year.

I will call it our Christmas party. It is somewhat early, but the jolly mood was displayed by all present plus the decorations on our table (prepared by our lovely

8 and ever-willing Sister Ruth Duncan), who was dressed in a pretty red party dress with white feathers around her neckline. She looked like an angel floating around; so what's wrong with calling it our Christmas party?

We had a nice attendance and only a very few could not attend and we did miss them. I assure you all have missed a very congenial gathering. The members of the Hlahol Club arrived at the designated time, 4 p.m., and we 'were served refreshments by Brothers Bill Vornsand and John Zemko. A delicious dip prepared by Ruth Duncan, was enjoyed with the accompanying drinks.

Sisters Rosalee Kostom, Ruth Duncan and Evelyn Vornsand of the committee for this party, planned everything carefully and I must say successfully. The Czech menu consisted of roast pork loin and roast beef with dumplings, sweet-saner cabbage, carrots, potato salad, gulash and bean salad (made by Evelyn Vornsand). This menu was well-received and, of course, as everyone, full of calories, declared. But who cares, for this one time!

When Club President Sister Naomi Kostom and I arrived at the lodge at 91:30 am. to tackle the cooking for the day, to our surprise we found our assistant director, Brother Milo Karel, waiting with an apron and cap to help us with our task. As the day went on, Naomi and I were thankful for his generous help; there are not enough words to praise him! He knows what and when to do it and we got along just great.

Director Tim. Kostom played taped music and just loud enough for all to enjoy it and not to interfere with the conversation among the guests. All the ladies came dressed in party dresses and, of course, the men matched them with their attire.

At 5:30 p.m. Madame Chairman Naomi Kostom, with chosen words welcomed everyone and expressed her pleasure for the jolly and congenial &rood this evening. Director Tim Kostom gave the benediction after which the guests formed a line to serve themselves buffet style. The dessert table held kolache, Bozi milosti; Sister Vakik

VRSTNIK brought some of her famous cookies and Mary Tilich brought a delicious fresh apple cake.

After everyone was served and relaxed, all chatted with one another and, all of a sudden, an SOS came from our vice president, Evelyn Vornsand, for men volunteers to help in cleaning up because we had to leave the place clean and ready for Sister Annie Vale to take over the kitchen for her to be able to serve the Saturday night dance guests.

I must compliment the willingness shown by so many and, of course, there was only so much room. Brother King Hegwood was the chief dishwasher who had a hard time keeping up with Eugene Barcak, Jerry Postom and Richard Schnell drying them; Sister Susan Schenburn was helping put everything in place, so, in no time, the place was spit and span.

The overall gathering was a nice party and everyone parted with a kind word and a smile. It was 9 p.m. and the dance started with music by Gilbert Kautz and some of the Hlahol Club members were dancing in the Chandelier Ballroom for a spin around the dance floor.

Oh! An announcement was made by our director, Tim Kostom, that a musical Czech play has been selected to be presented in the early part of next year. The parts are all cast and in good hands. Hlahol Dramatic Club is proud of this announcement and, with all our Might, we will continue the work that had been initiated on our stage for the 10th anniversary of our lodge many years ago with a play, "Zenska Vojna" ("Women's War"). All you dear folks who appreciate our efforts will be informed of our progress and I am sure you will have a reason to look forward to this production.

If you think that the officers and members of 1975 did a very competent job, tell them thank you. If you don't think so, don't miss a chance to speak your piece at the meeting; that's what they are held for; don't gripe after the meeting; it doesn't do any good then.

We sympathize with the families of Sister Frances Mikeska and Brother John Mucha in the passing of their loved ones.

We wish to extend get-well greetings to Mrs. Charlie Tomasek and to Ray Kovar. Mrs. Tornasek is in Scott and White Hospital. Mit Kovar is in and out of the hospital, and both seem to be doing well.

The lodge is in need of voluntary help to watch over the lodge home and keep renters from abusing the property. The request was made by the kitchen committee, so try and help them, plus the lodge as well.

New members to the lodge are: Willie Olivani, Keine Elizabeth Cable, and Brandon Heath Winnett. We welcome you and hope the lodge can accommodate your needs.

Dear Members: The November meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m., at President Sister Lillie K. Hejl's residence.

President Banns had everyone to stand in silent prayer for Brother Emil Janek who passed away on Thursday, October 16, and Brother Herman Drews, who passed away also on Tuesday, October 16th.

May they rest in eternal peace.

Brother Silas Smith had Sister Engelke read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting which was held Thursday night, November 6th.

Sister Jeanette Smith reported on the Entertainment Committee activities. She gave the details on the lodge Christmas party for Sunday, December 14th, following the lodge meeting on the preparations for Santa's visit to see the children. There will be more information in the Vestnik, later.

Sister Smith said that our youth club had entered a poster and scrapbook at the Texas Fraternal

10 Congress Convention held in Austin. The poster won third place.

Steven Stanislav, youth club member, also performed at the Youth Spectacular.

We wish to congratulate Brother Silas Smith on becoming second vice president of the Fraternal Insurance Counselors' Department.

Sister Parma gave the youth club report. She reported on the District III Youth Club meeting which was held during the district meeting at Elk, the project they will have, and on the plans for a cookbook. They will also have the volleyball tournament in the spring of 1976. Sister Parma thanked everyone for the canned foods they brought for the Meals on Wheels project. She especially thanked Brother and Sister Charlie Mueller for their generous donation of items.

lodge make some contribution to this member. Donations were taken at that time and netted $71.94 and the mother lodge contributed $100, thus making a total contribution of $171.94. After more discussion a motion was made that plans are in the making to have 'a Sunday afternoon dance to raise more funds. There was an offer that one 'band would like to help put on the dance; another band would like to participate, also. Sister Smith, the entertainment chairperson, will contact these bands and a date and time will be worked out to have this dance to raise funds for this young lady. Watch for details on this event. We will need all of the membership to help support this worthy occasion. Please come out and make this activity become a huge success.

Dear Members and Friends, Our annual meeting convened 'promptly at 1 o'clock with all the members reciting the pledge of allegiance. The membership stood for a moment of silence in tribute of our deceased members, Sister Cecilia Zettel and Sister Albina Pesak. Sincere sympathy is extended to both families on the loss of their loved ones.

Minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as read by our secretary, Mary Werner.

Thank-you letters were received and read from the families of Cecilia Zettel and Albina Pesak.

Financial Secy. Allene Zwahr and 'Treasurer Carlis Vallet gave their respective reports.

A thorough report on all income and expense throughout the month of October was given by Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walel.

He was complimented on keeping such a fine record for each month of the year.

Sister Albina Kovar was admitted to the Polly Ryon Hospital Saturday afternoon. We sincerely hope her health gets better and she will soon be able to come home. Members who were hospitalized and who are recuperating at home now are Brother Charlie Shefcik and Sister Gusta Lee Lenart. We are happy that they are doing well.

Before the election of officers began the members sang "Happy Birthday" to Sister Mary Werner.

We do want to wish her many, many more pleasant birthdays.

A welcome is extended to our new member, little Miss Tammy Hackstedt.

Since Christmas is knocking on our back door, and we always take gifts or fruit to the guests at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home, we thought it best to delay our giving until January, since many gifts are received by them from other organizations and churches at Christmastime. This way they will still have Christmas a little later.

The entertainment committee has met and decided to sponsor a New Year's Dance. Our beautiful SPJST Hall is a nice place to dance to fine music, so call for your reservation early. Call 793-6288 or 793-6284.

We all wish to congratulate Brother and Sister Stanley Slacalek on their 50th wedding anniversary.

LODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH AND FRIENDSHIP CLUB Dear Members and Friends: The Friendship Club had a very good turnout on Wednesday. Our guests were Mary Botik, Addie Winans, Ernestine Pettyjohn, Frank Prochaska, Jimmie Mason and *Toe Milan.

New members to join our club were: Irene Zubb, Anna and Eugenia Rozbovil.

Plans were made for our Christmas meeting which will be Wednesday, December 3rd at 10:30 a.m.

The club will furnish the ham and the sisters will bring covered dishes and pastries.

If you would like to participate in the gift exchange, bring a gift cf $2.00 value.

Get-well cards were signed and sent to Rosie Steinman and Eunice Korteff Miller.

We voted to send Christmas donations to St. Theresa's Home and a Christmas Mass for Sister Anna Korteff who is still in the Lakeview Nursing Home.

Election of officers was held and the same officers were re-elected:

Mary Tesar, president and treasurer; Mary Pavey, vice president and reporter; Josephine Prochaska, secretary. We are hoping for another good year.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Anna Milan, Lillie McMillen, Tracie Miller and Brother George Korteff. Sister Milan received a greeting with a beautiful broach from Eva and Virgil Dockery of Isfahan, Iran.

After the blessing, everyone enjoyed the delicious turkey dinner.

Games followed.

Sister Frances Jaworski was our door prize winner and she, in turn, returned it to the chib. Thank you, Frances.

Our lodge meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan. We were led in the pledge of allegiance by our youth club member Paul Milan.

Brother Jerry made welcome our guest, Sister Katherine Hale Garrison from Greve Cover, Ill. (She is the daughter of Sister Mary Hale and is here to visit her son, George Halford, also). We were also happy to have Sister Rose Steinman back with us again.

Brother Milan gave a report on the District III meeting that was held at Lodge No. 35 and explained the by-law rules for selecting delegates to our next convention. This and election of officers will be held at our next meeting, so please attend.

New members accepted are: Melvin Harris and Sandra Reed.

Our youth leader, Sister Donna Rose Parker, gave a report on the youth club's Halloween party that was held Friday night, October 31.

It was a fantastic party and had a large turnout. Over 78 youngsgters were in costumes plus the adults. Dear Brothers and Sisters, The Dramatic Club of Lodge No. 88 had their annual banquet on Saturday, November 8th, and believe me, there were some fantastic tasting foods. We have Frances Olen' and Milo Karel to thank because they did the main planning and preparing. They had several helpers and I know if I started to list them I would surely omit someone's name. I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly thank those ladies again and the ladies who brought the delicious desserts.

Also it was announced that the roles for a Czech play have been cast and we hope to present it in late February or early March. I will have more information on this as it develops.

The monthly lodge meeting was held on Monday, November 10 and it was announced that the annual meeting will be held on Sunday, December 14th. The monthly meeting for December will begin at 10 a.m. and those attending the

morning session will receive a free noon meal ticket, but ONLY those attending the morning meeting.

The annual meeting will begin at 1 and we will have a special seating arrangement for the voting and non-voting members. I will remind you of this date periodically between now and then.

The members on the sick list at this meeting were Betty Sue Warren who is in Memorial NW Hospital, Mildred Holeman has been ill and her husband, Jack, is home from the hospital now. H. J. Jarisch is home and sporting a fancy sling on his right arm and Almeda Bravenec is home and doing fine.

Mrs. Garrett, mother-in-law of our President Louis Hanus, and his wife, Oleta's mother is in the hospital, too, but I regret I didn't catch which one it was. Tillie Helmcamp was at the meeting and looking great. It was also reported that Leger Koehns had passed away. Our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends.

HELP! I need teen volunteers to help decorate the lodge Christmas tree on Tuesday, November 25th.

We will begin at 7:30 and the lodge is purchasing an artificial tree which we hope we will be able to use for a few years to comer The entertainment committee will be decorating the lodge that night, too, and they have asked that if any teens would like to help them, they would appreciate the extra pairs of •hands. Hopefully, by the time you read this most of you will have been contacted about it.

Don't forget, that's Tuesday, November 25th, at 7:30 p.m.

Speaking of Christmas, the lodge Christmas party and youth program will be Monday, December 22, but I am not sure of the time yet.

Santa Claus will be on the stage this year and a photographer will be there to take individual pictures of the youngsters visiting with Santa. Mrs. Knapick is calling on all youth to participate in the program. It will be a little different this year in the fact that it won't be a regular play, but make up from different talent performances and some dialogue by the youth, so please contact Mrs. Knapick or one of the youth leaders if you are interested. Again, I will remind you from time to time about this coming event. The youth

will hold their December monthly meeting on Sunday, December 7th, at 3 p.m. and all youth are asked to bring a small gift for a nursing home patient. Soaps, tissues, lotions, small items for those who may not have families to provide these things for them.

Lee., For the Saturday, November 8th Gilbert Kautz dance, Mr. and Mrs. Royal Warnasch celebrated - 36 years together, Ed and Gladys Heine, 25 years, Joe and Ruby Ward (from Angleton, Texas), 31 years; Jack and Janey Hibbs, 33 years; Harold and Dell Segert (no years given), and Jack and Lola Cullum (no years given). Happy anniversary, folks, and everyone come back and see us again soon.

The Birthday Club Sisters are taking orders for their cookbook sales and the books will be ready after Christmas. The books are $3.50 and if you would like to give some as Christmas gifts, the Sisters will take your order and give you a gift certificate redeemable for the book when they are delivered in January. A lot of work and time went into the making up of this book and I know that everyone of the recipes are delicious and time-tested because they are all personal recipes donated by the Birthday Club Sisters. LODGE NO. 175, FORT BEND Dear Members, The November meeting of Lodge No. 175, Fort Bend, was held at the home of Lillie Toon on November 9th, at 3 p.m.

Vice President Milton Vyvial called the meeting to order. Minutes from the October meeting were read and accepted. The treasurer's report was given and accepted.

Everyone stood and we paid a silent tribute to Brother Darrell Pace and Brother Andy Kohutek who had recently passed, away.

We had a discussion about doing some fraternal work for groups such as the State School of Retardation and the nursing homes. Sister Helen Bryson made a motion to select a worthy project and start working on it. Sister Georgie Krejci seconded it. Sisters Ann Vyvial, Lillie Toon and Bernice Kveton were appointed to start this project.

We have more honored members this month: Connie Dobesh, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Dobesh of Rosenberg was honored as "Girl of the Month" by the Richmond Rotary Club. Connie is associate editor of the "Hoofbeat" at Lamar and is active in Future Secretaries' Association.

Also, Nickie Talasek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom R. Talasek of Rosenberg, who is a debate winner at Wharton County Junior College.

This 1975 Lamar High School graduate took first place in the Lincoln - Douglas Debate division of BYD on the topic, "Effect of Urbanization on American Life."

ing will be held on December 7th, at 3 p.m. at the Rebekah Hall in Rosenberg. The hall is located on the corner of Ave. K and 7th St. Everyone coming should bring gifts to exchange, especially the children. Also, some sweets for refreshments would be helpful. PEGGY KALINA RECEIVES STATE 4-H RECOGNITION Peggy Kalina, a Wharton 4-H Club member who has done an outstanding job in leading members in songs, games and other activities, has been named State Winner of the Recreation Program.

Peggy will receive an expense-paid trip to the National 4-H Congress in Chicago, November 30 - December 4.

Peggy is the 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Kalina, Jr., of Route 3, Wharton. She is a

YOUTH SECTION From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Readers, The youth club meeting was held on November 2nd, The attendance was good in spite of the rain which didn't keep the youth members away.

On October 19th the District III Youth Club meeting was held at Lodge 35, Elk. We also had good attendance from our club. The youth club donated $15 to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home (a gift for Christmas) and also decided to play volleyball as an activity.

On October 31st — Halloween Day, the youths, mothers and fathers enjoyed a hayride, also had a spook room and served refreshments, plus a Halloween costume contest. The• winners were Robert Seith, funniest; Becky Mynar, prettiest; Bobby Hykel, spookiest; Darrell Uptmor, ugliest; Lanette Hykel, most original.

We played games and then enjoyed hamburgers, chips, punch and treats. on Sunday, November 2nd, we held our regular monthly meeting et 2 p.m. at the Talton Commu':'-v? Center.

President Glenn Kahanek called the meeting to order. Gary Krpec led the pledge of allegiance and Sheri Krpec said the prayer.

We introduced two new members Kim Dornak and Shawn Bartosh.

Then we discussed our Christmas party which will be held at the Taiton Community Center on December 19th. The adults' Christmas dinner will be held on Decem-

ber 7th.

After new business we had a Thanksgiving program. Clare Dorotik, Karen Kahanek, and Diane Dluhos, read short stories about Thanksgiving.

The door prize winners were Michelle Krpec, Mark Krpec, Diane Dluhos, Robert Krpec, Kim Dornak and Brian Bubela.

Then we had a craft workshop.

The boys made peppermint candy Christmas trees and the girls made houseshoes from wash cloths.

After craft we played SPJST football.

The youth club did make a small profit and we do want to thank all who donated and helped in any way. Special thanks to the following persons: Mr. and Mrs. Jack Lawhorn, 40 lbs of meat for the stew; Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Green (of Green's Sausage House) for a variety of canned goods. Dear Readers, Our Halloween party turned out great. We had a large group of people. The winners of the costume contest all won nice prizes, and those winners were: 8 and under — Amy Steinman, 9 to 18, Shawn (Sanders, and adult, — Donald Steinman. The youth club would like to thank all of those who came and made our party a success.

The meeting was opened at 3:05 'by President Talon Milan on Sunday, November 9th. The pledge was led by Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Milan. The roll was called; there were 21 members and 3 guests present.

The minutes were read and approved and all other officers reported. The old business was about the Halloween party, and the new business was planning for our Christmas party, which will be on Friday, December 19th. All are welcome!

Birthdays this month were: our guest Jeri Lynn Mills, Missy Johnson and Jill Parker.

The youth club would like to thank the mother lodge for the turkey dinner before the meeting.

We would like to invite everyone to our dinners the second Sunday of each month before the meetings.

LODGE NO. 130, DALLAS Dear Readers: As I stated in my last letter, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some of the more interesting facts and highlights of our trip to Cincinnati for the National Fraternal Spectacular.

The weatherman provided us with perfect flying weather which made us very happy since this was a first flight for all of us except my dada We left Dallas-Fort Worth Airport at dawn — just in time to watch the sun rise. The bright sunlight made the clouds below us sparkle like mounds of snow and I had the sensation of sledding.

The stewardesses served a delicious breakfast and all too soon (1 hour and 36 minutes) we landed at the Cincinnati airport. Strange as it may seem, the airport is located in the state of Kentucky and not in Ohio, The drive to the city took us through hills and valleys covered with trees that were just beginning to show their autumn colors.

At one time, my parents had lived in Cincinnati for about three years and after we were settled in our hotel room, some of their friends gave us a grand tour of the city. First they took us to the water front, a street and area that runs along the shore of the Ohio River.

The river itself was full of activity as they were in the process of getting ready for steamboat races the next day. The captain of a four-deck steamboat, The Delta Queen, invited us aboard and proudly showed us everything from the engine room to the various sized cabins and the two huge dining rooms. During the summer months, the Delta Queen makes two-week cruises from Pittsburgh to New Orleans, then back to St. Paul and again to Pittsburgh. They are booked about a year in advance. Another oddity we discovered was that the state of Kentucky is responsible for the maintenance of the Ohio River — for instance, in order to go fishing in the Ohio River, one must have a Kentucky license.

Cincinnati is called the city of seven hills. Our friends then took us to an area called Eden Park — one of the hills that was first developed by the early settlers, then abandoned and is now enjoying a restoration period. This particular area overlooks the river and the property is very much in demand.

The narrow cobblestone streets wind up and around the hill. The houses are narrow, several stories high, very close together, with little or no lawns. Wrought iron in beautiful design was used extensively for trim or fencing and all of the old churches have exquisite, ornate steeples, This, we were told,

By this time, we had covered a lot of territory and it had been a long day, so it was time to return to our room and prepare for the next day which I wrote about in my Last letter.

On our return flight, we had a stop-over in St. Louis about midnight and, as an added attraction we picked up Ruta, Lee and her escort. She sat a few seats ahead of us and she is as beautiful as she appears on television. We arrived at home after 2 a.m. and it was not easy to get up the next morning and go to school. But, it was worth it and some day, just maybe, I can dream of a' return trip to that grand, picturesque city for another visit.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetx reported that the Six Flags trip was enjoyed by everyone. She also announced that our club had the most entries in the most categories at District III YAD. Then we drew names for Christmas. The Christmas practice will start on November 14th. We will present the program at our annual Christmas supper and party.

He had been in failing health for the past few years.

Brother Grebe was born on March 19, 1911, in Bleiblerville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Grebe.

He was reared in the BleiblervilleNelsonville communities and attended public school there.

On October 16, 1938 he was married to the former Miss Vlasta Stephan in ceremonies performed in Nelsonville. During his life he was engaged in farming and ranching and also was employed as a bus driver and service station attendant.

He was a member of Nelsonville Brethren Church and Bleiblerville Lodge No. 33.

Accent on Health They're here--those crisp, cool days which mean only one thing to some one million people in Texas: it's hunting season.

Dove season brings a gleam to the eyes of hunters, but it is late October and November which put that extra bounce in their steps, sends them into the hills and valleys and into marshes and timbered country for deer, javelina, duck, geese, quail and turkey.

The Texas Department of Health Resources wants to make each outdoorsman aware of the fact that hunting can be hazardous to your health.

Hopefully, all men and women are in good physical shape who go through the exhausting process of a camp cleanup and management, the long hours and the strenuous exercise of hunting.

Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Many executives leave their padded swivel chairs and surge off into the hills like a professional fullback. They're the ones who are out of shape, out of practice in handling their rifles and shotguns, and out of touch with good safety habits. While most hunters look on themselves as Daniel Boones, far too many should never leave their televiOon sets and comfortable arm chairs.

Once they leave their year-long environment, there are many dangers to be averted. A hunter may come up.. against insects, snakes, poisonous plants, carelessness in gun handling, the dangers of food poisoning, and asphyxiation from camp stoves.

Many stinging insects move into closed-up cabins, and they make their presence known when hunters return to camp, So enter your cabins cautiously,

0 being alert for insects as well as snakes ,coking a dry, warm place to bed down.

Insect stings, reminds the Department of Health Resources, cause more fatalities than rattlesnake bites.

On the subject of food poisoning, the Department has this advice: keep all foods hot or very cold. Foods left at room temperature allow bacteria in them to grow, and a person can get very sick from eating this food. If you're unsure of your water, a sample should he sent to a Department of Health Resources laboratory.

Each year during cold weather many people are killed by carbon monoxide isoning. All stoves should be checked for venting. Every smokestack and chimney should be clear of obstructions, such as birds nests. You can't see or smell carbon monoxide, so the best bet is to make certain all fires are vented to the outside and that fresh air enters your cabin. Hunters who sleep in small campers should never leave a fire burning at night.

Safety in the field is a vital part of any hunting trip, and it takes some thought and planning to make sure that your trip doesn't end in _tragedy. How many people do you know who carry loaded guns in their cars...climb over fences or into deer stands or duck blinds with loaded guns in their hands . . .walk around with the safety of their rifles or shotguns off and a shell in the chamber. . .point their weapons at others .. .or bring loaded guns into the camphouse.

Caution is something which all persons should exercise throughout every day of the year, but extra precautions against injury--and perhaps death--should be taken when you're outside of your natural element.

If you hunt ducks from a boat, or use a boat to reach your blind, always wear a life preserver. It is mighty hard to swim in heavy, bulky clothing. Cold water can sap your strength in minutes.

It may be too late to start an exercise program to get in shape for the strenuous hunting activities, but brisk, regular walks will help tone up some of your muscles. If you're in the middle and later stages of life, take it easy and don't overdo it. Too much, too fast could bring on a heart attack. No rigid athletic conditioning program should be undertaken without consulting your physician.

Aside from practicing good gun handling techniques in the field--or to and from your hunting lease--there's another safety precaution which you can take. Safety authorities strongly recommend the use of blaze orange clothing as a safeguard against

VESTNIK becoming a statistic. Too many hunters are mistaken for game by over-anxious, careless hunters.

And, to help prevent eye injuries, make certain you are wearing glasses with plastic or hardened lenses--lenses which are much more difficult to break.

Fall is a wonderful time of the year in Texas, says the Texas Department of Health Resources. And you can make it a productive one by thinking safety--first, last and always.

SPJST — EATING HABITS OF YOUNG GIRLS STUDIED Eating habits of pre-teen girls are being studied by researchers of the Texas Agricultural EXperiment Station in an effort to discover why so many women today are prone to obesity and related nutritional problems.

Results of the 5-year study now underway in Texas and seven other southern states may profoundly affect future eating habits of many Americans, the researchers believe.

The regional study is taking a sharp look at the eating habits and related information of from 500 to 800 9-year-old girls in the eight states. The Texas project involves research on 150 girls — 50 whites, 50 blacks, and 50 MexicanAmericans — from different economic backgrounds in the BryanCollege Station area.

Co-investigators for the Texas project are Roscoe Lewis, Station scientist whose field is nutrition, and Alice Stubbs, head of the Experiment Station's Consumer Research Center, who specializes in family economics and marketing.

She directed a pilot study which included interviews and examinations of 50 girls to obtain diet histories and data on height, weight, wrist measurement, head circumference, plasma samples and other facts related to dietary habits.

Results of the pilot study provide valuable information for the broader research project now underway. Baylor College of Medicine Staff members, including Dr. Buford L. Nichols, Dr. R. E. Herron and Dr. Robert Dutton, are assisting in the present project.

Diet and Measurements Recorded Researchers are using guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare as the girls are weighed, measured, and asked to list all foods eaten

The examination also includes the collection and analysis of biostereometrical (silhouette outlines of the body) data. These data are computerized and utilized in determining total body volume, volume distribution curves and body density.

The biostereometrical information collected by the Baylor College of Medicine physicians, is forwarded to Experiment Station researchers for correlation with routine anthropometric measurements such as height, weight, skin-fold thickness and other information.

Physical examinations of the subject are conducted at the Texas A&M University Hospital, where blood samples are obtained and plasma vitamin A levels and retinol-binding protean concentrations are determined. Additionally, x-rays are taken of the wrist, ankle and knee for examination and interpretation.

Period of Drastic Change Little is known about dietary requirements of children from age 9 to puberty, notes Lewis. This is the transitional period from child to woman, and a drastic time of change as a youngster prepares for womanhood, he adds.

He emphasized that diet is most importanti, brut studies indicate that in many cases it is not what it should be.

Teen food habits suggest they have the poorest dietary habits of any other age group. Surveys have repeatedly shown that pre-teen girls frequently have diets low in calcium, vitamin A, ascorbic acid and some times the B-complex vitamins. Another important requirement for all age groups is iron. Females, even pre-teenagers, need more iron in their daily diets than males, Lewis said.

In the present study, each of the 150 subjects will he tested annually for two more years before any meaningful results are tabulated, so it is too soon to determine much about dietary patterns of the Texas group.

But the researchers report that some interesting facts are emerging. Some of the subjects drink little milk, while others eat few vegetables or little fruit. Many appear to resort to empty-calorie snacks and packaged foods in lieu of well-balanced meals.

Wednesday, November 19, 1975 Station researchers will collect and interpret the statistical data from the subjects during the 5year period in an effort to determine what influence the economic levels and the ethnic backgrounds have on what the girls eat and what their intake patterns are.

Eventually, guidelines for nutritional education will be formulated.

Obesity and Related Problems The researchers hope to learn a great deal more about obesity and with it, such as heart disease and diabetes.

"We know that many women have weight problems and that nearly half of all black women today are overweight by age 50," explains Lewis.

We also know that today's children, even with poor eating habits, are growing taller and bigger than ever before. We hope that these questions and many others can be answered as the research progress es."

When the Southern Regional Nutrition study is completed five years hence, Lewis hopes to continue to work with the remaining Texas subjects in an ongoing proj -ectobainmreutional data reports W. A. Landrnann, Experiment Station biochemist and overall project coordinator.

In 1973, the Texas Legislature passed the Open Records Act to make sure the public has the right to see how its money is being spent, but Blue Cross is contending that Open Records Act does not apply to the $50 million they paid themselves for "administrative costs."

A court suit has been filed in Dallas to force Blue Cross to account for the money, and I am hopeful that the court will see to it that Blue Cross releases the information.
