The weekend of October 25th and 26th was a very busy one for many members associated with our SPJST Society.

Saturday, October 25th, after finishing our Vestnik duties at the print shop, we turned our direction to Austin for attending the Texas Fraternal Congress "Youth Spectacular."

We arrived in time, however, the rain never ceased all the way to Austin from West. The evening was most enjoyable and we regret that we cannot publish more pictures of the event because space is at a premium, again, this week. By the same token, our editorial will be limited somewhat so that we can utilize our space for other material.

To say that our SPJST youth represented our Society well, would be an understatement. They are to be congratulated for their efforts. The Banik Sisters, Cynthia, Denise and Charlotte (35), the Karate Dancers: Sheryl Marek, Connie Marek, Chris Holmes, Peggy Kalina, Romona Holmes and Phyllis Spacek of Lodge 58, Steven Stanislav (66), and Rita and Carol Kamas of Lodge 130, including SYD Dorothy Massey did a superb MC job, certainly did their share to publicize our SPJST at the TFC in Austin. * * From Austin, next day, was a quick trip to Lodge Texaska Orlice No. 13 in Dime Box for the dedication of their new lodge home which is pictured on the front page. Although it had rained, rather hard, just prior to the date of the dedication; this fact did not dampen the spirits of those attending and all enjoyed a very warm fraternal day visiting and being entertained by so many enthusiastic groups, who extended themselves to provide entertainment for all of us present. Reports and pictures of both the TFC and Lodge No. 13 dedication appear in this isue. Both occasions are well described in the various articles written in this issue. All in all, the most credit goes to, as Lodge No. 13, Dime Box President Claude Flippin so aptly put it, to the officers, committees and members of Lodge No. 13, for a hard job well-done! ** We would like to also call your attention to the letter from Mr. W. 4 We need rain so badly, but we were glad the weekend was dry for the festival. I think everyone had a big time.

I received many raves on the delicious dinner and that honor goes to Sister Mary Renfro. Again, what else can we say but thank you to all the brothers and sisters who worked so hard in the kitchen, bar, clean up, and other projects, and to all for their donation of pastries plus the items for the kitchen.

Brother and Sister Jerry and Henrietta Milan with their son Rome arrived home safely Sunday afternoon from Mexico City, where they attended the Pan American games. I am glad they got in, in time to enjoy a few hours of the festival.

Sister Rose Steinman is improving slowly. She has been missed by many, so get well soon, Rosie!

Several of our members attended the District III meeting at Lodge 35, Elk, which we enjoyed; they always make us feel at home.

Watch for our Benefit Dance for our parking lot paving on November 22nd and a Banquet on Sunday, November 23rd.

Fraternally, Mary Pavey - SPJST — LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters, Czech Day came and went with a bang. We'd like to thank Mayor Hofheinz for paying us a visit and doing us the honor of reading the Czech Day Proclamation from the city government.

Also we'd like to thank mayoral candidate Dick Gottlieb for paying us a visit. Mr. Gottlieb was kind enough to have the Choral Group and the Concert Orchestra on his show this time last year and we are glad he and his wife stopped by. Also, we'd like to thank Professor Theo Halama for his lovely speech. There were lights everywhere and cameras rolling like crazy. The movie "Seven Days to Remember" was aptly narrated by Robert Eubank and was very interesting.

One of the main reasons for Czech Day is to honor our members who have worked long and hard around the lodge.

Those honored this year were Margaret Allbritton, Frank Broz, Frances Chalupnik, Helen Daniels, Harry and Lucille Drawe, Billie Sack and Mildred Holeman, Marie Hurley, Marilyn Jaksch, Mary Louise Kadlecek, Waldo Kalich, William and Marceil Malak,

VESTNIK Joseph and Della Miksch, Vlasta Moore, Jaroslav Pokorny, Mary Schenburn, Richard and Helen Schnell, Frank Sembera, Frances Vala, Alois and Elsie Zalesky and Edward and Vlasta Zalmanek.

I would like to thank Louis Hanus publicly for letting me present the honoree plaque to my mother, Mary Schenburn; she was very surprised that I was her presenter, and I think that it was very nice and considerate of him.

Thank you again, Mr. Hanus.

Everyone had a great time, the food was delicious, the band played well and the Choral Group sang well and everyone looked fantastic in the parade of costumes. This was a huge Czech Day celebration and I was glad to see so many people there. I hope that next year will be even bigger and better.

However, the day wouldn't have gone well if not for the people behind the scenes. There are too many to mention here but you know who you are and we appreciate your hard work.

For the Saturday, October 11 Knights of Dixie dance these folks had anniversaries: Mr. and. Mrs. Walter Ludecke-34 years; Johnny and Billie Furnza-33 years; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Stephens-35 years; and a happy 12th anniversary to Evelyn Young from her husband. These folks had a birthday: A. J. Zalesky, Kirby Groves, Michael Portele (from N. Carolina by the way), E. C. Gehring from Bryan and Ernest Rose. Connie Portele and Izzie Polasek announced their engagement at this dance and our visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Milford Wilson from Cumberland, Maryland, and Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Vielek from Shiner, Texas. Congratulations Connie and Izzie and to our visitors; do come visit us again.

For the Friday night, October 24th Gaylen Ackley and the Good Times dance these folks had a birthday: R. J. Polhel, Ray Kebodenux, Ed Richter, and Buddy McSpadden. Rudy and Agnes Lesak celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary at this dance and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Haggard celebrated their 7th anniversary. A special Hi! to Roy Garcia.

That same night the juniors and intermediates had their Halloween party and they really had a good time.

The winners of the costume contest were from winner down to 3rd runner-up as follows: Matt Fletcher, Margie Barcak, Jeff Barcak, and Christi Lamza. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to Carl Sutton, Louise Knapick's grandson for entertaining us with a magic act and to the leaders and assistants for their efforts and work on the party.

The lodge monthly meeting will be held on Monday night, November 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Gaylen Ackley and the Good Times will be playing again for the Friday, November 7 dance and they always pack a crowd, so you had better get your reservations in early that week.

Gilbert Kautz and his orchestra will be playing the next night, November 8.

Dress will be semi-formal. Don't forget, only 42 more shopping days until Christmas!

And don't forget also that the youth will have a Christmas craft workshop for youth club members each Friday night in November, beginning at 7 p.m.

Keep safe and keep on trucking until next week. Glad to see you're out of the hospital, Rudy. I think Maxine and crew did a marvelous job while you were ill but I'm sure they're very glad to have you back.

Dear Members: Our regular schedule at the lodge is as follows: The first Sunday of each month social, games and supper starting at 4 p.m.

Second and fourth Wednesday nights square dancing at 7:30 p.m.

First and third Thursday nights youth club social 8 p.m.

Saturday nights at 9 p.m. social entertainment.

As you know I didn't write last month in the Vestnik about the September 8th meeting. There wasn't too much to write about; mostly discussions and the regular procedure of reports from officers and trustees.

I guess it is right to say that our thoughts were on the royalty going to Holland, Texas on September 27, to take part and the members anxiously awaited the results. We are so happy to have State King Steven Parrish and Stmt.. Duke Russell Bond, both from Lodge. 74. , e had nineteen members a ccepteu in our lodge in September.

The October 13th meeting was held in regular manner at 8 p.m. There were eighteen members present.

The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Next, followed the minutes of the last meeting which were accepted as read.

Vice President Johnny Johnston was appointed to serve as chairman of the Nominating Committee for 1976 officers.

Wednesday, November 5, 1975 The treasurer's and financial-secretary's reports were accepted as read.

We had twenty-one new members to be accepted at this meeting.

I would like to point out to our members that our hard-surface road from Highway 19 to the lodge, has been completed. I hope some of you have noticed it.

We have six members of Lodge 74 taking courses offered by Angelina College of Lufkin, being held here in Crockett. The SPJST Lodge 74 is paying for the courses. As you all know, square dancing has always been sponsored by our lodge and also has purchased some of the dresses and suits.

On October 18 we held a western dance and everyone came dressed western or in blue jeans. A good crowd attended the dance.

The lodge didn't have anything planned for Veterans Day or Halloween this year.

On November 1st some of the youth club members journeyed to Grapeland to the annual Peanut Festival and performed square dancing for the Bicentennial celebration; the SPJST Lodge 74 youth club members had two squares represented at this eventful affair.

Monday, November 10 will be our, regular officers' and trustees' meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, November 26 will be our Thanksgiving dance from 8 to 12.

Youth chosen for Workshop SeminarA local youth has been selected to attend the Washington Workshop Seminar in March 1976. Troy G. Langham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Langham of Crockett, will be one of four high school students from Texas to attend. While in Washington, he will meet with various senators, representatives and ambassadors. He will also attend sessions of Congress and speeches by the president.

Troy is being sponsored in part by the SPJST Lodge 74 of which he is an active member. His application was approved on September 23, 1975, and he is now making arrangements for transportation to Washington. We are so happy to have young people like these in our Society and as a member of our local lodge as well.

Here is a small amount of food for thought: 1) "A good neighbor is a fellow who smiles at you over the fence, but does not climb it."

2) "There are two ways of meeting difficulties; you alter the difficulties, or you alter yourself to meet them."

3) "The man who trusts men will make fewer mistakes than he who distrusts them . "

Dear Brothers and Sisters: After the wonderful response and interest the members showed at our lodge fish fry October. 11, 1975 at precinct three Gregg County Park, I must write a report. It is a great feeling to be head of a group that shows so much interest and who are so willing to pitch in and make a gathering of the members such a success. It was a beautiful Saturday evening in a beautiful park filled with 76 beautiful people. The aroma of fresh Louisiana catfish, hush puppies and French fries being cooked on the portable cooker and fryer on wheels furnished by Mr. Charles Etheredge of Etheredge Machine and Tool Co. added to the hearty appetite of all those present. Charles not only furnished and delivered the cooker, but also manned it with the help of his wife, Lillian, activity chairman Brother Don Davis, Rules and Regulations Committee secretary, Sister Mae Harrison, and Remuneration Committee chairman Brother Bill Kelly. In addition to the tasty fish, French fries and hush puppies, the members enjoyed cole slaw, tartar sauce, lemon sweet cake, coffee, cokes, and, of course, good old Schlitz beer in the atmosphere filled with beautiful polka music.

There were several door prizes for adults, and a coin hunt for the youth consisting of half dollars and silver dollars.

After leaving the area of the coin hunt and walking up the hill, I was elated to see a socker game, a badmitton match and a volley ball game all going on at one time. This provided lots of entertainment and spirited cheering.

Thanks also to Fund Raising Chairman Gene Hablinski, assistant Fund Raising Chairman Sister Val Steele and the many pond Raising Committee members, who helped provide funds for our lodge, which help make these occasions possible. Sister Val Steele, we were sorry you were not able to attend, due to a family illness and another misfortune.

Let's all remember our monthly meetings every third Sunday of the month at 2 p.m. at the Elderville Community Center on Airport Rd. Family game night every Friday night at 7 at the Elks Lodge and Sunday night at 7 at the American Legion. Don't *ait to be called to attend meetings and functions. If its SPJST, you belong, its your Lodge.

Dear Members and Friends: Pinewood Heritage Lodge 178 had its regular meeting October 19 at the Elderville Community Center. President Hugo Kocian called the meeting to order. Tanya Snider led the pledge of allegiance and Mary Jo Taraschke read the SPJST motto.

Vice President Gene Hablinski asked that we remember our departed members.

President Kocian informed the members that the son of Brother Arthur and Marie Wiesner was seriously injured in an accident Friday, October 17 in Corpus Christi.

Following a correction in the minutes, they were approved.

Financial Secretary Louise Wilbur reported nine new members.

6 Sister Viola Kocian reported that many youth of the lodge attended the fish fry and all had a great time. Help is needed with the youth members' Christmas program.

Vice President Gene Hablinski reported for the Fund Raising Committee. A round of applause was given to this committee for a job well-done.

Entertainment Chairman Don Davis reported on the progress of plans made for the dance on November 15 at the Fairgrounds Building. Tickets for members to sell to their friends will be available shortly. Members are urged to bring or invite their friends and make our first dance a big success.

President Kocian presented a report for the building and land buying committees. He read letters from SL President Nick Morris and Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska. Members present gave unanimous support to the committee.

The fish fry was a good outing and everyone had a good time. Seventy-six persons attended at the Sabine Park.

The Rules and Regulations Committee reported that they have met and are progressing nicely. Their final meeting (they hope) should be October 21st.

Their proposals will be presented at two consecutive meetings and then voted upon. The Supreme Lodge will then receive them for their approval.

The lodge Christmas party is set for December 13th. Everyone mark your calendar!

The regular meeting for December has been re-scheduled for December 14 to avoid the Christmas week rush. This meeting is very important with the election of officers one of the items on the agenda. Mark the calendar for this date, too!

WORTH LADIES' CIRCLE Dear Members: The next meeting of the Circle will be Thursday, November 13 at the lodge, beginning at 10:30 a.m. A lunch of turkey and dressing, with all the trimmings, will be served. Reports were given on the lodge's anniversary celebration and the Ladies' Circle booth. Thanks was extended to all who worked so hard.

VESTNIK Anna Juran reported on the current project of the group to display pictures of all past presidents of the lodge.

Photographs are still needed for Frank Dobes, 1917, and Joe Taborsky, 1922. If any lodge or family member has a picture, a loan of it for copying purposes would be much appreciated. The picture would not be harmed in any way and would be returned as soon as possible.

LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Members: We are proud to say our grand opening of our new SPJST home Lodge 13 dedication in Dime Box, was well attended; by about 2,000 people (a very conservative estimate).

There was news coverage by the Giddings Time and News, Citizens Tribune and the SPJST Vestnik.

The crowd assembled near the main entrance where official ceremony activities were begun by Judy Marek and Rusty Bay. The ribbon was cut by SL President Nick A. Morris, Lodge 13 President Claude Flippin and District I Director John Kubena.

Then all were asked in and observed the remainder of the ceremonies indoors. This was followed by the pledge of allegiance led by Don Bayer.

Presiding Officer Michael Simmang introduced SL President Nick A. Morris and Lodge 13 treasurer, Sister Mildred Horak, who were principal speakers.

Afternoon activities were the youth members of the lodge who presented a beautiful program with singing and short speeches. Thanks to Mrs. Nellene Spacek, youth leader, and Mrs. Milton Nimtz, assistant, for their effort, time and hard work.

Also thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Spacek and all the members of the Dime Box Square Dance Club for their fine performance.

I want to thank Mr. Floyd Stuteville and the Lodge No. 47, Seaton Beseda dancers for their fine performance; they came a long way to entertain us.

A vote of thanks to Shiner Brewery for the use of their sound truck. Their music perked up everybody and also thanks to those who furnished the flowers.

SP.IST SOFTBALL TEAM LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Mexican dinner sponsored by the Softball Team on Thursday night, October 23, was most successful and the food was delicious so I was told.

Lillie Jarma and Ida Schulz, who headed up the chefs, had expertise assistance from Bessie Petr, Lillian Hamusek, Pauline Vrana, Carlyn Ondrusek and Wanda Kopecky. They worked all day Thursday rolling and preparing the enchilados, rice, beans and making a salad. Also all of the players' wives who helped with the final preparations and the serving of the food, helping and working in the kitchen plus help from Emil Petr who grated a lot of cheese, Wanda Petr who was responsible for obtaining the special cheese, Willie Ondrusek and Leo Kopecky for their help, for all the players who helped with sale of tickets and for cleaning up the lodge home after the dinner was served; to all of these good members and friends, we extend a huge "thank you" for your help in making this a financial as well a

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The October meeting was called to order by President Louis Hanus at 7:30 p.m. on October 13, 1975. Brother Billy Burford presented the colors and led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

It was reported that the following Brothers and Sisters passed away since the previous meeting: James McGee, Clarence Mikel, Alex Johnson and Gary Dean Rudder. The members stood in respect of our departed Brothers and Sisters.

The minutes of the meeting for the month of September were read and approved by the membership.

President Hanus announced that Czech Day is fast approaching. Much work has been devoted to this occasion and the members were reminded to wear their Czech costumes that day and an adequate amount of film for the Czech documentary will be shot that day. Brother Robert Eubank will be narrating the film, "Seven Days to Remember" and spoke of the importance of viewing the film.

Wednesday, November 5, 1975 ed on past and upcoming youth activities. The "Womanless Wedding" presented on September 14 was quite successful. In this respect, Sister Linda Wehring presented a gift to Sister Harriette Allison who directed the play.

Also, Sister Wehring was presented a gift from the Youth Club for selling the most tickets to the play. The cast to the play was also introduced. Sister Knapick also announced that the Youth Club will open the kitchen on November 23, Ernie Hanka's Apprec.ation Day. Donations have been taken for the various items needed and more contributions are desired. .

Favorable financial reports were presented on behalf of the various committees.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Harley Cox thanked the members who helped with the District V meeting and also for the donation of pastries.

Brother Cox also requested for pastries on Czech Day and announced that a delicious turkey dinner will be served for that occasion. The upcoming events at the Lodge were announced and details of Ernie Hanka's Appreciation Day to be held Sunday, November 23, were given.

Birthday Club President Willie Mae Wood thanked Sister Rosa Lee Kostom for donating the dinner for October.

Regarding Ernie Hanka's Appreciation Day, the Birthday Club Sisters will sponsor a cake sale for three Thursday nights preceding November 23.

For the Dramatic Club, Brother T. S. Kostom announced that plans are being made to cast the Czech operetta to be presented in February or March. For the Choral Group, Brother Kostom announced that the Group has been working diligently on their songs to be presented on Czech Day. It was also announced that the Dramatic Club will have a meeting on October 28.

District Youth Counselor Marlene Caraway thanked the members who attended the State Royalty competition at Lodge No. 80, Holland on September 27. Sister Arlene Malak, who represented District V and Lodge No. 88, was second runner-up. Her duchess was Sister Kristen Lamza. Representing District V and Lodge No. 88 as king was Brother John Griffin and Brother Vernon Hegwood served as duke. Sister Caraway also announced that the District Youth Counselors will hold a meeting in Temple on November 8 and stated that if any member had any suggestions to improve the Youth Department to give it to her in writing and she will present these recommendations at the meeting.

Historian Frances Olexa presented the members with an interesting and informative history of our Lodge covering the years 1927 through 1930.

The next order of business was the election of the Remuneration Committee. This Committee consists of seven members: the President of the Lodge (Brother Louis Hanus), Chairman of the Board of Trustees (Brother A. L. Hilsher), Chairman of the Entertainment Committee (Brother Harley Cox), Chairman of the Auditing Committee (Sister Marceil Malak) and three members who have attended at least 50 percent of the regular meetings to be elected by the membership. The following Brothers were elected by acclamation to serve on the Remuneration Committee along with the aforementioned President and Chairmen of various committees: Bob Martinak, F. A. Kadlecek and Abner Dixon.

Following the election, the Screening Committee was discussed. This Committee consists of three members whose duty is to contact all eligible members to serve as delegates. Following the discussion, a motion was made and seconded to set the rules and regulations aside to permit four members to serve on this Committee.

Such motion passed. The following Brothers and Sisters were elected by acclamation to serve on this Committee Arnold Spencer, Noel Kennedy, Ellen Gill and Helen Hegwood.

VESTNIK LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Readers: October 26, 1975 designated as Czech Day at Lodge No. 88 was, in one single word, wonderful and a huge success all the way. I am sure anyone present that day would varify my statement. Czech Day at Lodge 88 is an annual affair, but 1975 was a crowning success beyond description. Our lodge President Louis Hanus is a born planner and leader, with his constant supervision and checking and giving each committee ample time in which to perform their assigned duties; this has proven to be successful. This time he was assisted by Brother John Zemko.

Our lodge is very lucky to have so many faithful and devoted members in helping to have the premises and every corner of the lodge in perfect order including the ever-popular kitchen ready with delicious food to be served on time to satisfy our guests. We also wish to thank all the donors of home-made pastry in which they were very generous.

By 11 a.m. the parking lot started to fill and the inside was humming with happy people greeting each other and waiting to be served the delicious turkey dinner (specially prepared). By 1 p.m. the ballroom started to fill and it was visible that the whole place was prepared to accommodate each part of the program. The stage was ready for the Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra, in front of the stage a riser for the Choral Group and a section on the right. On the left the recipients of, awards were seated and, on the left, further back at the stage the speaker's table. At 1:15 p.m. the Lodge #88 Concert Orchestra, dressed for the occasion in colorful Czech attire and directed by Br. R. Dybala performed for the pleasure of the guests and they responded lavishly with applause. Also, the Lodge 88 Choral Group, directed by Brother Tim Kostom and accompanied by Sister Naomi Kostom presented several songs in English and Czech. Our soloist, Sister Helen Hegwood with her golden voice, sang: "NAD PRAHOU TANCI HVEZDICKY" (STARS ARE DANCING OVER PRAGUE) and the whole group joined with the chorus. Also, for the first time, the Choral Group has been accompanied in three songs by our famous Concert Orchestra to the delight of the audience.

The colors were presented by Billy Burford, Kenny Broz and Gary Ermis.

The national anthen, as usual, was sung by our lovely Helen Hegwood and accompanied by Naomi Kostom. The youth club Queen Arlene Malak and King John Griffin were presented and seated at the speakers' table. Vice

Wednesday, November 5. 1975 President Janet Eubank presented Lodge 88 President Louis Hanus who welcomed the guests with well-spoken words of appreciation. We had the pleasure to have, in our midst Honorable Mayor Fred Hofheinz of our fair city of Houston, who read the proclamation and then presented the proclamation declaring October 26th Czech Day in Houston to President Louis Hanus. The Mayor also spoke a few words in Czech.

The speaker of the day was Professor T. Halama who spoke briefly in English and Czech. Professor T. Halama is in the third year of teaching Czech courses at the University of Houston with 57 students. President Louis Hanus, with the assistance of his second Vice-Pres.

This concluded the day's program and the floor was cleared for the ever-popular parade of costumes which is a colorful sight with so many beautiful home-made and also original costumes that have been brought from Czechoslovakia and worn by: Helen Valcik, Helen Schnell, Anna Kilnar, Anna Karel, Milo Karel and Mary Johnson. I am not exaggerating if I say that over 200 were in costumes and in the parade, and there was little 2 year old Kathy Gooden, granddaughter of Irna O'Conner dressed in a costume and she looked like a living doll. Irna made it for her and she was just darling and had the attention all around. The two groups of young people under the direction of Wanda Kennedy danced beautifully in presenting our ever-popular national dance "BESEDA". The dance that started at 5 lasted until 9, was free and was enjoyed by all, especially as Lee Roy Matocha played.

All the faithful members and friends who worked so hard for many weeks to have this Czech Day October 26th perfect, all deserve many thanks! No one realizes what sacrifices it takes to achieve results, unless they have been .a part of such an undertaking. We are grateful to all and everyone who, in any way, contributed to the success and all

While I am here with you today I will report on our Choral Club. We are existing for many years, but the last ten years we are more active because we have performances by request outside the lodge. We all enjoy being part of this pleasant and agreeable group, we always look forward to our weekly rehearsals every Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. They are regular unless we are notified otherwise. We never held any meetings but a meeting was called of this group Wednesday, October 15th. In this meeting we elected our officers as all the other groups of the lodge have and they are as follows: Evelyn Vornsand-chairman, Helen Hegwood-secretary, Rosalee Kostomtreasurer, Tim Kostom-director, Naomi Kostom-accompanist, with the assistance of Emily Sebek and Estelle Kelly; Music Committee: Harriette Allison, Emily Sebek and Naomi Kostom; Arrangement Committee: Frank Tilich, Arnold Spencer, Frank Sebek, Albert Bristik and Della Kadlecek, Telephone Committee: Mary Tilich and Agnes Lesak.

So far no membership fee is involved and anyone wishing to join our Choral Club is welcome to spend a pleasant time each week with a jolly group of people who love to sing.

VRSTD/fIC LODGE NO. 172, PASADENA Dear Members: On Sunday morning, October 26, I, S. J. (Slick) Ordener and my wife traveled to Brenham where we had breakfast, then we traveled on to Dime Box for the Grand Opening of the new home of Lodge 13.

When we arrived we didn't know anyone, but, in a few minutes, we met friends we knew and made new friends.

It was wet and muddy in the red sandy clay part of the state but the beautiful place of Lodge 13 home and friendly people made up for the rainy weather.

We were there for the ribbon-cutting ceremonies and the dedication which was held indoors. Brother Nick Morris made a very nice talk and many other lodge dignitaries were there.

Lunch was served about 1 p.m. and the youth program followed after lunch.

There was square dancing performed by the Dime Box Square Dancers, and a grand march by State Champion Beseda Dancers of Lodge 47, Seaton, who danced e . the Beseda, a Czech National dance.

Then there was an auction held. My wife thought $45 was too much for a big cake, but what really got her was when a can of beer was auctioned off for $50.

The event was one of the largest turnouts I have seen at an SPJST lodge.

11 LODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Our monthly meeting was called to order by President Gene McBride Wednesday, October 8 at 7. After hearing reports from officers, Brother McBride stated that in the past few months a substantial payment has been made to the Supreme Lodge significally reducing the note on our lodge building.

He also asked for more active participation from our membership, hopefully in 1976 we can pay off all our indebtness.

SPJST REPRESENTED AT TFC YOUTH SPECTACULAR

The SPJST was fortunate in being represented by four very fine numbers in the Youth Spectacular of the Texas Fraternal Congress in Austin on Saturday, October 25th. The Spectacular was held in conjunction with the 75th Annual Convention and Diamond Jubilee of the TFC, which was held on October 25th, 26th, and 27th. The convention and program were held in the Stephen F. Austin Hotel. The Youth Spectacular is sponsored by the Youth Section of the TFC, and we, in the SPJST, were honored to have State Youth Director Dorothy Massey serve as president for the year 1974-75 and as MC for the Spectacular.

District HI Director Bro. Sid Pokladnik delivered the address to the Youth Counselors' Section of the TFC on Saturday afternoon. The main thrust of his talk related to young peoples' quest for a place in our society, buttressed by statistics from surveys and research on the subject. It was very well received. 14 SPEECH DELIVERED BY SL PRESIDENT NICK A. MORRIS ON THE OCCASION OF THE OPENING AND DEDICATION OF THE NEW HOME OF LODGE 13, DIME BOX ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1975 Thank you Bro. Simmang! Members of the Supreme Lodge, Honorary President Edward L. Marek, officers and members of Lodge 13, Dime Box, members of the SPJST, distinguished guests and friends. It is especially pleasing to be present on an occasion when one of our lodges is dedicating their new lodge home. A new lodge home stands as a symbol to the industriousness, will and determination, and hard work on the part of the leadership and members of any organization. We are proud of you and share your joy.

Before I relate to you some facts about Lodge 13 and how this building came to be, I would like to introduce and recognize the other members of the Supreme Lodge who are present here today and their spouses: First of all, my wife, Dorothy; Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and Sis. Mikeska; Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Ben Zabcik; Legal Adviser Reuben Lesikar and Sis. Lesikar; Honorary President Edward L. Marek and Sis. Marek. Of our directors who are also members of the Supreme Lodge, we have, first of all from this district, Dist. I Director Bro. John Kubena; District II Director Bro. Henry Vitek; Dist. III Director Bro. Sid Pokladnik; Dist. IV Director Bro. Stanley Broz and Sis. Broz; Dist. VI Director Bro. Matt Vanek and Sis. Vanek; Dist. VII Director Bro. Frank Veselka and Sis. Veselka. The following information about the early beginnings of Lodge 13 is based on information researched and prepared

by Bro. Frank Riske, at the present time the Entertainment Committee chairman of the lodge. We are indebted to him for this information.

The history of SPJST Lodge "Texaska Orlice" No. 13 started with the founding of the new Czech-Moravian Community of Hranice in 1880 when two brothers, Martin and Valentin

"Orlice" is a derivative of the word "orel", meaning eagle, hence "Texas Eagle". The community of Hranice was located east of here, just off the highway going to Caldwell. Only the cemetery remains today.

Thomas Charbula, a son-in-law to Valentin, acquired the tract on which the Hranice cemetery and school were located and both Protestant and Catholic churches were later built. He deeded the tract for the cemetery and school to the organization called "Hranice Community Association". By 1885, in the short period of five years, there were over twenty Czech-Moravian families settled in the Hranice

The Hranice Archives show collections were taken from the following families for the cemetery in 1885: Srubar, Vana, Dittrich, Hlavaty, Krenek, Svach, Hlavaty, Skopik, Kubena, Blaha, Zalmanek, Charbula, Pokluda, Kocurek, Simek, Petras, Grossman, Pinter and Teuber.

The community center was named "Hranice", which means "boundary" or "frontier" after a village in Central Moravia in Czechoslovakia. In the next year of 1886, donations were taken for the school. Records indicated additional and newly arrived settlers who donated to he as follows: Vince Lesikar, Mike Valigura, John Valigura, John Rek, Joseph Krupa, Jos. Krajcicek, Steve Dancak, Sr., Ondrej Srubar, Joseph Cepcar, Jos. Libich (Teacher) Frank Dubcak, John Simek, Pavel Valigura, Anton Orsak, Jos. Jurica, R, Jarsek, Jos. Supak and Jan Kocurek.

These new immigrants realized soon products to the Moody interests in that they would be needing each other's Galveston. One of those twenty-four lodges were Texaska Orlice No. 180 in Hranice. It was organized in the Hranice schoolhouse in 1891, with the following fifteen charter members: Joseph Dusek, Jan Jurcak, Joseph Krupa, Vinc Balcar, Anton Orsag, Frank Stefka, Jan Krenek, Frank Svach, Jan Valigura, Jan Hejtmancik, Michal Valigura, Joseph Koudelka, Jan Simek, Joseph Blaha a- -1 Tom Kocurek.

This CSPS lodge at Hranice was in existence for only five and one-half years, from December 1891 to July 1897. Other new members who joined during this time were: Jan Mares, Ferdinand Simek, Joseph Kubena and Josef Hejtmancik.

Just as other Texas members in other CSPS lodges in Texas became unhappy and dissatisfied with the unusually high dues assessed them, so did the members of Lodge Texaska Orlice No. 180. Like the others, they felt it was unfair that the farmers working in the clean open air of Texas should pay the same dues as the coal miners and factory workers working in polluted and hazardous areas in the crowded northern cities, i.e., different mortality experiences and rates. Objections were raised to this situation in the conventions in 1895 and 1896, but the delegates failed to heed the warnings of the Texas delegation. In late 1896, December to be exact, and the early part of 1897, plans were made for the Texas lodges to vâ– .draw from the CSPS and form a new fraternal society for the Texas lodges with headquarters in Texas. This was done in the first convention in June 1897, at which time it was officially agreed to use the date of July 1st, 1897 as the beginning date of the new organization, Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, "Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas", today known as the SPJST. CSPS Lodge No. 180 was disbanded on July 11, 1897 and the property, books and membership were transferred to the new SPJST Lodge Texaska Orlice No. 13. Membership in the CSPS Lodge had dropped and there were only nine members when the transfer occurred.

The meetings of CSPS Lodge No. 180 had been held in the Hranice schoolhouse. Lodge dances and picnics, as well as church services for both the Czech-Moravian and St. Joseph Catholic Church were also held in the Hranice schoolhouse.

The records of CSPS Lodge No. 180 show that on January the 10th, 1897, Michael F. Valigura was reimbursed in the amount of $11.50 for his expenses

This was three months before the new was the delegate and represented the Hranice lodge at the December 28, 1896 SPJST lodge at Hranice was formally meeting held in La Grange for the organized. In reply to the transmittal of purpose of forming the new fraternal the $8.00, Bro. J. R. Kubena wrote again to Bro. Simek on April 14, 1897, order.

The archives in Hranice show that on as follows: "I acknowledge receipt of the list of March 29, 1897, Bro. J. R. Kubena wrote to Jan Simek at Hranice as proposed new members and the $8.00, however, the list shows only seven-Bro. follows: "Please advise if it will be possible Krupa is missing from the list. Those during the next month for you all to join wives who are insured in the CSPS need the new Order so that we could bring it not have a doctor's certificate. Those to life on May 1, or do you wish to delay who are not, do need one, Brother until after the convention of the Main Blaha's wife is noninsured in the CSPS and if she is past 45 years old, she Lodge which will be held in June?"

The records of Lodge Texaska Orlice cannot be accepted. Can't you aim for CSPS No. 180 further show that on April 10 new members? By-laws require it 11, 1897, the sum of $8.00 was paid out and your lodge is the only one which has

17 less than the by-laws require. Anyway. with you, an exception can be made if you will not have the 10 members. How about Bro. Mares and some new members? The new Society, SPJST, becomes a reality on July 1st. Do you all wish to retain your old name and lodge or do you want to change it? I am sending you 9 copies of the printed by-laws as you requested."

Nine members were present at the meeting of 11 July, 1897 and paid their CSPS lodge dues for the last time on that date and they amounted to $8.90.

The same page of the record book lists the new SPJST lodge charter members with this entry: "1897 Lodge Texaska Orlice No. 13, Slovanska Podporujiei Jednota, Statu Texas - 11 July 1897, Jos. Krupa, Josef Blaha, Jan Valigura, Jan Mares, Tom Kocurek, Mike Valigura, Anton Hovadik, Vine Balcar, Josef Kubena and Jan Simek.

Anton Hovadik is shown- as a new applicant and the required tenth member needed to satisfy the requirement of the by-laws at that time to form a new lodge. Apparently, the membership recognized that a momentous step was being taken because a record of the first meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 13 was repeated on the next sheet of the treasurer's record book.

Fifteen new members joined Lodge 13 by the year 1900. The record also shows a detailed list of those members who joined Lodge 13 during the first twenty years.

All the meetings of CSPS Lodge No. 180 and the early meetings of SPJST Lodge No. 13 were held in the first school building at Hranice. Both lodges were chartered in this first schoolhouse.

In 1915, the schoolhouse was sold to Frank Blaha and a new schoolhouse was built at Hranice. It appears that no formal SPJST meetings or social affairs were held in this new school building since the new lodge building was built that summer. The H & TC Railroad was built from Giddings to Caldwell in 1911-13, but it bypassed both old Dime Box and the Hranice Community Center, mainly because certain families donated land for new town lots in the new Dime Box area. The railroad depot was built at the new town location and old Dime Box was moved to the railroad in 1913-15 to become New Dime Box. In the meeting of March 5th, 1914, Josef Koudelka made a motion to build a new lodge hall, but this matter was tabled until the June meeting. On June 14th, the motion was again made to build a new lodge hall and this passed with 27 votes. It was then moved that the lodge building be built in "town" where it would have greater usage. Then a committee of five members were

18 elected to find a suitable place. These were Paul Mikulin, M.F. Valigura, Josef Koudelka, Josef Hejtmancik, and Hynek Rippel.

On August the 9th, 1914 Paul Mikulin gave his estimate for building the new lodge hall: lumber $550; labor $2,500; total: $3,050, and on September 12th the committee announced the new tract of 1.6 acres for the new hall had been purchased for $230. In the October meeting a decision was made to defer further consideration for building the new lodge hall until January 1915 but no firm action was taken until March, when Joe Kocurek, Vine Balcar, Sr., and Paul Mikulin were elected to the committee to proceed further with plans for the new hall. Paul Mikulin bid to build the new hall for wages of $2.50 per day and agreed to furnish one laborer for that price. Bids on lumber were: Dime Box Lumber Yard $612.80; Caldwell Lumber Yard $625. This first SPJST lodge measured about 28 ft. x 40 ft.

The dedication date was set for July 1, 1915, to coincide with the 18th anniversary of Lodge No. 13. Vine Marek, Paul Mikuli'- Josef Koudelka, Tom Kocurek, Alms Krenek, .Vine Balcar, Jr., and Josef Kocurek were elected for the dedication committee. It was decided the hall should be painted for the occasion and Joe Baklik agreed to do this for $12. The dedication and celebration for the new lodge hall was held on June 29th, 1915, with brass bands furnished by the New Tabor and Rovnost lodges. The profit made on that day was $205.55 and SPJST Lodge Texaska Orlice No. 13 was in business!

THE SECOND LODGE HALL After the lodge hall was built in New Dime Box in 1915, the meetings, dances and barbecues were held there instead of the Hranice school. The Woodmen of the World and the RVOS also rented the hall for their meetings, however, in the meeting of September 1915 the motion was passed that the hall would not be rented to others for dances.

By early 1925 plans were begun to build a larger lodge hall. In May 1925 the old lodge hall was sold to William Blaha for $750. The old hall was torn down and William Blaha built his home one mile north of Dime Box with the lumber from the first SPJST lodge building. The SPJST lodge members meanwhile hired the veteran builder, Joe Tydlacka of Austin, to construct the larger lodge building measuring 56 ft. x 80 ft. The new (and existing) hall was built during the summer of 1925 and it was four times the size of the first lodge building, and that building still stands on these premises. The record of expenses for September 1927 show that Bro. Tydlacka was paid $4,000 to build

Older members were assessed $50 and $100 each and the newer members $25 to help pay for the lodge building. There were some eighty members enrolled in 1925 and over $3,000 was collected in this manner. In later years, the members built the refreshment stand, the bingo stand, the gazebo and the brick barbecue pit. An additional 1.6 acres were also purchased to the north of the first tract for use as parking space.

I stated earlier that there were some eighty members enrolled in the SPJST Lodge 13 by 1925. From about 1930 to early 1974, the membership remained fairly constant at around 150 members, which indicates that there was very little gain in membership and, of course, a few deaths. It was not until the summer of 1973, when certain changes took place within the lodge, that new members started being enrolled into Lodge No. 13, and the period since then has marked a turning point in the existence and membership of Lodge No. 13, so that from the average of 150 members for so many years, the period from the latter part of 1973 to the present time has seen almost a doubling of the membership of Lodge 13, 287 to be exact, as of yesterday. That is another story, and I am going to let Sister Mildred Horak relate to you how this period affected the lodge and how it all came about. Sister Horak. (Sis. Horak made her speech which follows): A DREAM COME TRUE About two years of talking, planning, dreaming, many meetings and a lot of hard work, and today we have a new

Our Supreme Lodge President, Brother Nick Morris met with us at our meeting on Jan. 19, 1975 to discuss the possibility of building a new lodge hall in Dime Box. It was at this meeting that the members elected a Building Committee. They are: Chairman, Brother Joe Milburn; Sister Nicki Jatzlau, Brother Albert Blaha, Brother E.N. Spacek, and Brother Dan Iselt.

This group went to work and presented the members with several blueprints, one of which was chosen by the members.

In our meeting Feb. 16, 1975 the members voted to build a, new lodge home. On April 10, 1975, the contract was awarded to Pokorny Construction of Taylor for the metal frame structure.

Inside finishing work was awarded to Werner Jatzlau and local carpenters.

It was also in our February meeting that our president and vice president nominated an Entertainment Committee. They are: Chairman, Brother Frank Riske; Brothers Lawrence Loewe, and Brother Don Bayer. As you know, in the past our activity consisted of two annual barbecues, one SPJST, and one Dime Box Volunteer Fire Department.

There were maybe one or two reunions or weddings. This committee didn't lose time in their planning. On April 20th we had our farewell dinner to honor the old lodge home, and at the same time we had our ground-breaking ceremonies for the new lodge home.

Approximately 550 attended the ceremony, dinner, and afternoon dance. We have also had several dances since April.

I can't help but mention our youth club, which is really growing. Our Youth Leader Sister Nellene Spacek and her assistant, Sister Olga Nimtz are really doing a good job.

In closing, I would like to add that our lodge is also growing. Two years ago we had 145 members; today we have almost 300 members.

We are proud of our new lodge home.

We hope you like it and enjoy yourselves today and will come back again. Thank you!

Thank you, Sister Horak. I recall that it was my privilege to be present at the groundbreaking ceremonies and I spoke of the intense enthusiasm and cooperation among the officers and members of Lodge 13 and of the support of this project by the local community of Dime Box. I said at that time this building, although intended for the primary use of Lodge 13, will also serve the many needs of the entire Dime Box and surrounding communities.

Now let's have a few words about the lodge building itself. It measures 80 ft.

Wednesday, November 5, 1975 x 120 ft., is of metal construction with central air-conditioning and heating, completely insulated, and rests on a concrete slab. It has nice kitchen and refreshment areas. This new building is located north of the old lodge building (which you still see standing today), on a plot of ground 3.2 acres in size. The old building has been left intact until sometime in the near future when it will be sold and razed, so some of you may want to go inside it today, perhaps for the last time. The general feeling is that the new lodge home of Lodge 13 will be a distinct asset to the community of Dime Box and the surrounding areas of Giddings, Lexington, Caldwell and other communities and will be a major entertainment and social center for the entire area encompassing Lee and Burleson Counties.

You will be meeting the lodge officers and committees in Lodge 13 very shortly.

It needs to be said that this venture again proves what we have been saying for sometime now and that is that new or nice facilities attract new members Into an SPJST lodge. You see it here today - now; you are an eye witness to it. The record shows that in just under two years, the membership has almost doubled, whereas, membership was more or less stalemated over the previous thirty or forty years. Certainly this is due, in large part, to the new structure. You have a nice and growing youth organization with a competent youth leader. Young people have been and are involved in your activities. This building is a FAMILY gathering place; activites are FAMILY-oriented and this is heartening. The SPJST is a FAMILY-oriented organization. Nothing welds and fosters the family unit in this country like activities in which BOTH parents and children participate, and Heaven knows that the entire nation needs to return to and strengthen the basic social unit - the FAMILY. The SPJST subscribes and whdleheartedly supports this concept.

This structure stands as a monument to those pioneer members of years gone by, but particularly to those present officers and members who have labored so diligently -PHYSICALLY LABORED -to make a dream come true. I have personally observed, in just the past few days, lady members of the lodge, for example, sitting on the floor painting cabinet woodwork and applying varnish to the concrete floor. Members of both sexes, young and old, have joined in working hand in hand to put the finishing touches on the building in time for this opening. God bless all of them! Lodge Texas Eagle No. 13, one of the 25 charter lodges of the SPJST, organized and chartered in 1897 with the spirit of enthusiasm land of helping one another, going through a period of inactivity and dormancy, has now come full circle again to that same spirit that kindled the efforts in 1897, thanks to many devoted and hard-working members. Dear members of Lodge 13, the community is behind you; you can't help but progress. A parallel, situation has developed in another charter lodge of our Society - Lodge Jan Zizka in Elgin No. 18, some of whom have come today to share with you your joy over your achievements. They will enjoy a similar event on December 7th of this year.

So Lodge 13 is on the "go" and growing. We are happy for you and we salute you and we congratulate you.

Thank you all so much for being members of the SPJST and for promoting the SPJST. God bless you all and have a good and happy day. You have earned it and by golly you deserve it! Thank you.

Brother Simmang: Thank you, President Morris, for your every kind and thorough remarks. I want to thank you personally for all your efforts in helping Lodge 13 "get on its feet" and for encouraging us in the direction of building this new edifice. We are, grateful to you. And now, I'd like to call on Bro. John Kubena, our District I Director, for his remarks.

REMARKS OF DIRECTOR KUBENA I want to say that I feel privileged to be here this morning and to be a part of the dedication of your new lodge hall. I think it is beautiful and may it serve your membership well in the coming

19 years.

To me personally, it is a great feeling to stand here and say that I am amazed at the comeback of Lodge 13. You are one of the older lodges, your transposition almost overnight from a near dormant lodge to one so active is remarkable. You had the foresight to envision growth and the splendor of a new and beautiful lodge hall.

You are now a lodge with a great future; surely you have an obligation which I know you will meet with ease.

However, please remember that your officers will need your help from time to time and you should give generously of your time whenever it is possible.

Officers are only human and they will rely on your help and good counsel.

I think you people here in this community of Dime Box are possessed of that rare unity which is so closely related to fraternalism. You are one people; you work together, and this spells happiness and success. You should have many good years of a beautiful fraternal relationship ahead of you. Again, my congratulations. Thank you.

Today is a great day of thanksgiving for us members of Lodge 13. We have looked forward to this day for quite some time.

We are thankful for this fine crowd of people. We have had a much-needed rain. The new hall is ready, and the food is almost ready, so who could ask for more?

We do thank each and everyone for helping us in so many ways to build this hall.

POST -OPENING OBSERVATIONS

Lodge 13 can look back on a successful opening and dedication.

Despite the rain the day before and the mud on the 26th, things turned out quite well. I believe the lodge membership was overwhelmed by the large attendance, which numbered approximately 700 persons. More came for the evening dance. The mud and grit were unpleasant to deal with on the dance floor but the dancers didn't seem to mind.

Presiding officer (and Lee County Attorney) Bro. Michael Simmang deserves commendation for the fine manner in which he handled his duties as presiding officer for the dedication ceremonies. Bro. Frank Riske and his Entertainment Committee deserve a vote of thanks for their work in guiding the day's activities.

The auction went over big, and the afternoon's entertainment, youth program, square dancers, and Beseda dancers, was enjoyed by the assembly.

Finally, all those members of Lodge 13 who worked so hard getting the new building ready before the opening and on the day of the dedication, whatever their responsibilites were, deserve a vote of thanks. Well done! Your work will now continue in operating your new facility. With cooperation on everyone's part, you can make it work. Good luck!

The success of our endeavor at Alvin Junior College serves as an incentive for SJC to duplicate a success story.

Heritage, culture, and history of this Slavic language is not the only aspect being considered. Serious thought has stressed reviving an interest in perpetuating the spoken word.

The desire was present and, taking the cue from the development at Alvin Junior College and elsewhere, the originators found encouragement from the college personnel. SJC has a beautiful campus, many relatively new buildings and has grown to a well-known school. This fact is proven -SPJSTby the 11,000 plus students registered there. The classrooms are, of course, INSTRUCTION IN CZECH modern with excellent lighting, chalkSAN JACINTO COLLEGE board areas, and mechanics for various PASADENA, TEXAS Dear Readers of the Vestnik and Czech methods of projection.

It was pleasurable indeed to meet Friends, All of us are, to some degree, be it with Dr. B. J. Honeycutt, head of ever so tiny or great, being affected by Continuing Education. He will prepare what is happening at San Jacinto articles for printing in the local College, Pasadena, Texas. A few newspapers. This should reach the individuals have banded together with general public and assist in promoting one major thought in mind. The basis of our cause. Our. Vestnik contributor this thought is to initiate a course in Vlasta Machann, Lillia Mae Peter and their husbands are also 'spreading the Czech in Pasadena, Texas.

Dear Readers, On October 19th, the District III Fall meeting was held at Lodge 35, Elk. The District III Youth Club also had its meeting then. youtn meeting was called to "1 he order by President Denise Banik. The minutes of the previous meeting were read, followed by roll call of lodges.

We discussed about a new charity project. We would be donating a gift for Christmas to the Taylor S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home. Each lodge was to raise some mone y and then send it in to the District

Wednesday, November 5, 1975 III youth treasurer. Then we would buy a gift and present it to the rest home. A committee was formed to see what the rest home was in need of.

Mrs. Nesuda also brought up an idea about having a cookbook. The youth will get Czech recipes from other people and send it in to the District Youth Club. A cookbook would then be made and the youth would sell this item, while making a profit at the same time.

Also we decided to play volleyball again as a district activity. Dates of the playoffs would be announced later.

LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Members, On Sunday, October 5 our Lodge 47 held its regular lodge and youth club meetings. The meetings began at 2 The youth club meeting was called to order by Donna Kohutek.

Peggy Mesecke led in the reciting of the pledge of allegiance and the club motto.

Kim Mikulas read the roll call and thirty-four members were present.

Kim also read the minutes from the September meeting and no corrections were made.

There were four birthday celebrants in the month of October. They were Vincent Schiller, Gail Wilson, Joseph Morris and Scott Sodek. Happy birthday to all!

The junior door prize was won by Dewayne Mesecke.

On Sunday, October 12 we held our monthly social, which was a hayride.

We met at the lodge at 2 p.m., and then went to Brother Johnie Vanicek's farm for hotdogs and drinks. Everyone had a great time.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu PJST No. 47, Seaton, in behalf of our ntire membership, wish to express our eepest sympathy to the bereaved tinily of our departed sister, MILLIE SEFCIK age 67, of Rt. 3, Temple and of the Seaton Community, who passed away very unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack in a hospital on Sunday, October o, 1975, a mere six days following the death of her sister, Mrs. Frank Mikeska.

Sister Sefcik was born Millie Elizabeth Drevojanek on February 25, 1908 in Bell County to Mr. and Mrs. Steve Drevojanek.

She was married to Jerry John Sefcik in 1931 and to this union were born two children Dolores and David. They were engaged in farming in the Seaton Community until his death. She was always assisting in all farm chores and nursing her husband during his illness of twelve years and her son's illness of twenty-six years.

Sister Sefcik was a member of Seaton Brethren Church, and of our Lodge No. 47, Seaton, for 50 years having been awarded her SPJST 50-year pin this last spring.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 28, 1975 in the Harper-Talasek Funeral Home at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Milton Maly officiating. Interment followed in the Seaton Cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Calvin (Dolores) Skrabanek; two granddaughters, Jerrie Ann and Dianne Skrabanek, all of Temple; four sisters, Mrs. Jerry Hejl of Oenaville, Mrs. Ed Schneider of Seaton, Mrs. Jerry Sefcik and Mrs. Jerry Adamek, both of Temple.

Sister Sefcik was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry on November, 1972 and her son, David on September 5, 1975; her parents, infant sister, two

21 infant brothers and brother, Rudolph, age 22; and a sister, Mrs. Vlasta Mikeska on October 20, 1975.

Sincere sympathy to all those named above and to the many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors who will miss her as will our lodge members.

May she rest in eternal peace after this earthly sojourn and honor to her memory, always.

Resolution Committee: Agnes Motl Adeline Kohutek Dorothy Pechal EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu SPJST No. 47, Seaton, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister, VLASTA MIKESKA age 69, of Rte. 3, Temple (Oscar Community) died of an apparent heart attack at her residence at the car Monday, October 20th. They were intending to go to the hospital. Death came unexpectedly, although she had been in ill health since August, 1973.

Sister Mikeska was born Vlasta Drevojanek on December 25, 1905 in East Bell County to Mr. and Mrs. Steve Drevojanek, later pioneers of the Oscar Community, where she grew up.

She became the bride of Mr. Frank D. Mikeska on January 19, 1929. They maintained their residence in the Oscar Community, where they farmed until they retired two years ago. Although in ill health, she worked in her home and garden when her illness permitted. She was always so friendly, always smiling, and helpful to every one around her.

She was a member of our Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

Funeral services were Tuesday, October 21, 1975 at 2 p.m. at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Milton Maly officiating.

Interment followed in the Seaton Cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Survivors include her husband, Mr. Frank D. Mikeska of Oscar; one daughter, Mrs. Clarence D. (La Verne) Pechal; two grandchildren, Steve Wayne Pechal and Linda Marie Pechal, all of Temple; five sisters, Mrs. Jerry (Alba) Hejl of Oenavilie, Mrs. Jerry (Millie) Sefcik and Mrs. Ed. (Rosa) Schneider, both of Seaton, Mrs. Jerry (Agnes) Sefcik and Mrs. Jerry (Marie) Adamek, both of Temple; plus several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Drevojanek, a twin sister and two brothers who died in infancy and a brother,

She will be missed by her beloved husband, daughter and son-in-law, her grandchildren, her sisters, neighbors, friends and by our lodge members.

CUBA 67, of 1102 Hackberry, Taylor, who died Saturday afternoon, October 18, in a local hospital.

He was born July 14, 1908 in Taylor and was a lifetime resident of the city.

For 28 years he was owner and operator of City Auto and Body Works. He was a member of the Taylor Brethren Church, SPJST Lodge 29, and an honorary member of the Taylor Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving are his wife, Vera Zavodny Cuba of Taylor; one daughter, Miss Bonnie Cuba of Taylor; six sisters, Mrs. Dan Kovar of Taylor, and Mrs. William Obermiller, Mrs. John Svoboda, Mrs. Cecil Kneip and Mrs. Daniel Svoboda, all of Victoria; and Mrs. Mary Reed of Austin; four brothers, Arnold Cuba, John M. Cuba and Marvin L. Cuba, all of Taylor, and Leonel Cuba of Victoria.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m.

Monday, October 20 at the Taylor Brethren Church with the Rev. Dan Marek officiating. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery under the direction of the Condra Funeral Home.

VESTNiK Thursday, October 16, 1975 at Scott and White Hospital, Temple, where she spent the last week of her life, She was gravely ill for the last ten months being a resident of Southern Manor Convalescent Home and in the hospital, often undergoing two surgeries.

Sister Chervenka was born on December 14, 1892 in Elgin, the daughter of Vince and Rosalia Dusek Shiller, Czech pioneers, and charter members of the Elgin and New Colony SPJST lodges. At the age 14, the Shiller family moved to Nova Osada (New Colony) community near Rogers, where she resided the rest of her life.

She married the late Mr. John W. Chervenka in 1914 and they farmed until her husband was permanently disabled in 1925. A widow with four sons, she maintained the farm home, reared the family, and made available higher education for her sons. She always was inspiring and encouraging to the family and others. She had been a member of SPJST Lodge No. 69, New Colony (presently disband) later transferring to Lodge No. 47, Seaton; she also was a member of RVOS Lodge No. 88, New Colony.

Funeral services were 'held Friday, October 17 at 3:30 p.m. in the Gommert Funeral Home of Rogers, with the Rev. Albert Michalik officiating. Burial followed in the Rogers. Cemetery.

Survivors are four sons, Woodrow Chervenka, Johnny L. Chervenka, Sr., Wiley Chervenka (with whom she lived and he cared for her) and Calvin Chervenka, all of New Colony and Leedale communities; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and four brothers Emil, Adolph, Alvin and Ed Shiller. She was the last survivor of her generation.

She will be missed by her family, friends and neighbors and our lodge, also.

Resolution Committee: Agnes Motl Adeline Kohutek Dorothy Pechal EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of Lodge No. 35, Elk, wish to extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, EMIL VICHA who died at his home 1603 Richter, Waco on Monday evening, October 20, 1975, at the age of 54.

Brother Vicha was born in Elk Community on March 9, 1921, the son of Mrs. Rosalie Vicha and the late

Wednesday, November 5, 1975 Rudolph Vicha of Elk. He grew up in this community and attended the Elk School. On June 10, 1939 he became a member of Lodge 35.

He entered the service on August 17, 1942 and served with the Army Air Corp in the 7th Airborn Squadron in the South Pacific area: Northern Solomons, New Guinea, and the Bismark-Archipelagos campaigns. He was discharged on December 17, 1945 with several honored awards: Asiatic Pacific Campaign ribbon with 3 stars, China Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and WWII Victory Medal. After returning from service, he followed the trade of a carpenter and became a contractor and continued this in the Waco area for 30 years.

Brother Vicha married Polly Marie Tusa on July 9, 1946. He was one of the original group of members who decided to revive Lodge 35. The first editions to the lodge home was planned and built by him; besides the many extras, he did on his own time.

Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21 at the WilkersonHatch Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, with Rev. Rabroker officiating. Burial followed in Waco Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers were Jim Kimball, Floyd Horton, T. A. Turnipseed, Harvey Green, Ned Johnson, Charles Whidden, Bill Dunnam and Pete Estrada.

Survivors are his wife Polly Vicha; one son, Paul J. Vicha of Waco; two grandsons, Paul J. Vicha, Jr. and Michael Wayne Vicha; his mother, Mrs. Rosalie Vicha of Elk; three sisters, Mrs. Ben Pechacek of Elk, Mrs. Guy McCluskey of 3121 Ethel, Waco, Mrs. Vernon Wood, Jr. of Route 1, Axtell; three brothers, Rudolph Vicha and Robert Vicha, both of Rt. 1, Axtell, and Ted J. Vicha of Rt. 1, McGregor.
