In this week's Vestnik, Brother Bob Bayer, president of District VII, is calling the respective district members' attention to the fact that their district fall meeting was changed from October 26th to November 9th, with Lodge 107, Floresvine hosting the event, due to conflicting dates of the Texas Fraternal Congress in Austin, October 25 through 27th. Be cognizant of this district meeting date, brothers and sisters of District VII, and attend your meeting. More complete information will be' forthcoming. * * For quite some time the official dedication ceremonies for Lodge Texaskg Orlice No. 13's new lodge building have been announced for October 26th in Dime Box. As our deadline for this issue of the Vestnik has just passed, we have not received any outlined information for publication this week. However, the festivities shall be taking place near the old lodge home building.

Try to join these fraternal members and extend your appreciation by attending their historical and memorable event that took much unselfish effort and sacrifice. These folks deserve your presence for their endeavors. Best wishes for continuous strength and grov,th.

There is only one way — FORWARD! * * In the last issue, we covered, at brief length, the stay (even a short one) in the hospital; those were mostly for "in-out" patient visits, however, Wednesday, October 1st, was of a more business-like nature and your editor's left leg underwent vein surgery, so now, five days later, our location is =stay horizontal with the leg placed higher than the heart (most of the time) and writing with an SPJST pencil on a clipboard held upright on the chest.

been one of our first visitors here at the hospital. Our apologies to Brother Smith, who was so kind to offer to take any belated material to the printshop if necessary or delivered messages from Waco via the telephone. The last mail leaves here at 4:14 p.m., sharp. Thanks ever eo much, Brother Smith, we ma3 have to call on you Since September 24th we have had visitors too numerous to mention. However we appreciate all of them and we wish to publicly thank Legal Advisor R. B. Lesikar (who offered any help in needed correspondence), SL President Brother Nick A. Morris, Sister Morris, and son Stephen, SI:, SecretaryTreasurer Leonard Mikeska, who With Brother Morris, had just returned from the NFC in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Brother Sidney Kaeir.

The remainder, I will not attempt to name, for the obvious reason of not wishing to take up too much space in this column and we ask, you to please understand.

At 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 8, SL Directors H. Vitek (II), Sid Pokladnik (III), S. Broz (IV), A. L. Flilsher (V), Matt Vanek (VI), and F. Veselka (VII) just paid us a brief visit during their noon lunch break from the third quarterly meeting of the Supreme Lodge in 19 -15. Director John Kubena (I) u as not able to be present at the SI, meeting due to illness. At the present time (2:30 p.m.) Brother Frank Coeek, secretary of Lodge Jarornir No. 54, West, came by with Brothers Ernest Tobola, Sr., and Albert Vrana, all of West. We enjoyed seeing them all and Brother Cocek, acting as "postman", delivered some material here and is also taking some back. We certainly c ppreciate this help. * * Here I would like to mention that Brother Joe Sumbera of West (member of Lodge 6, Cottonwood) is here in a room next to mine (342) 3-West, VA Hospital, Temple.

Nurses Mrs. Divis (Lodge 47), Mrs. Donalik; Brother Troy King, Brother Ralph Milek (47), Brother Bill Hutka (177) all employed here; and I imagine many more SPJST metmbers also work here. All here are wonderful to us patients. You mention SPJST to the folks around here and most of them know what you are talking about and you mention West, Texas, and everyone starts talking

about kolache and. West sausage and meats! Thanks for all the kind thoughts and yours truly is feeling fine.

Sister Finn, thanks for the kind words about the bus stop. When Brother Tim Kostom surprised me, I asked the nurse if a busload of friends could come up and she answered: "We would have to open the theater for you all to visit in."

Let me conclude this portion about my hospital stay by telling you about the prospective bridegroom who was afraid his wedding band might cut off his circulation. To which the bride-to-be assured him that it certainly was. Well, that's how it's been with me — out of circulation! * * For the present time remember the District III meeting at Lodge No. 35, Elk, on October 19th; we hope to be there. Certainly missed being at District V's meeting on October 5th and the Czech Day at the State Fair on October 12th.

We certainly hope that both events were successful.

NEWSBRIEFS The delegates to the last convention from District IV recently elected Brother William Urbanek of Lodge No 49, Rowena as their representative to the By-Law Committee. Brother Jesse Hajek of Lodge No, 73, Seymour was elected as his substitute. The By-Law Committee had its first meeting on Saturday, October 11th, in the. Supreme Lodge Building, Temple. * * The Insurance Committee and Publication Committee will meet in the Supreme Lodge Building on Saturday, October 18th. * * District VI Director Matt Vanek and wife Henrietta, from Victoria sent their greetings from Las Vegas, where they were enjoying a few days of fun and excitement. * * Greetings were sent from Sister Bess Witovec, member of Lodge 88, Houston, and her friend, Josephine Bishop, who were enjoying a visit in Czechoslovakia, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria and Switzerland.

Sister Witovec had the pleasure of visiting her brother, Josef Kostal, and his family in Czechoslovakia.

Mr. Kostal visited his relatives in Texas in 1963.

$ Brother and Sister Charles Prasifka, members of Lodge No. 84, Dallas, are vacationing in Portugal, Spain and Czechoslovakia, We wish them a wonderful trip and a safe journey home on October 20th. * * Zabojnik Reunion The descenaants ana their families of the late Frank Zabojnik, John Zabojnik and Cyril Zabojnik will hold a family reunion at the Sokol Gymnastic Center - SPJST Lodge No. 135, Ennis, on October 18th, 1975, beginning at 2 p.m. A buffet dinner will be served. Each family is asked to bring enough food for each member of their family. * * Pavel Sebesta - Rozina Pagac Reunion The descendants of Pavel Sebesta and Rozina Pagac will hold their reunion at Snook SPJST Hall on Sunday, October 19th. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Each family is to bring a basket lunch.

V LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our last regular lodge meeting was held on Sunday, October 5th, at 2 p.m. with Lodge President Jerry Pechal presiding. Flag Bearers James Allen and Stephen Morris led the membership in the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased brother, David Jerry Sefcik, of the Seaton Community who passed away on September 5th, 1975. Sincere sympathy to all of the bereaved family.

Visitors present at our meeting were: Herbert Dueser of Cameron, Ann 13alusek and Emily Hutka of Lodge No. 15, Buckholts and Mrs. Henry (Nancy) Mares, Jr., of Hurst. We enjoyed you all visiting and hope you are making plans to attend again.

Secretary Sister Lillian Kosarek read the roll call of officers and sales representatives. All officers were present and a majority of the sales representatives. Minutes were approved with a minor correction.

Correspondence included the receipt of the mortuary dues from the Supreme Lodge; a thank-you card from the surviving family of David Sefcik; acknowledgement of receipt of $10 donation to the American Cancer Society in memory of Brother Joe D. Jez, Jr.; a donation of nameplate of Lodge President Leon Zavodny, who served in 1973 and 1974, by Brother Edward Hejl of Hejl Trophies, Temple; and a request for donation to the United Fund, which was tabled.

The sick list included: Brother Johnny E. Kovar of Dallas, Sisters Norma Tucker and La Verne Pechal. As of this writing, Sister Pechal is undergoing surgery. Here is hoping you will all recover rapidly and good health will be yours.

Sister Evelyn Heese told me after the meeting that she had been confined to the hospital for four days recently, but has recovered and attended the meeting.

The new members accepted in this meeting were: Nonnie Ellen Kelsey, Henry Edward Olejnik, Billy Wayne Smetana and Jimmy D. Bryant. Additional insurance was secured by Alvin James Hejl and Diana Kay (Vrana) Kotrla transferred from Lodge No. 20 Granger, to our lodge; all those

The setting of Saturday, October 18th as the date of the filter clean-

ing and siliconing the lodge building exterior. This workday will start at about 8 a.m., so come and lend a helping hand, some food will be furnished for the noon meal by the lodge.

The Salary Committee, consisting of Brother Johnny Hruska, Johnie L. Vanicek and Sister Vallie Zavodny, proposed the increases of pay to two officers, the secretary and financial secretary. After some discussion, increases were approved, but other than proposed.

Sister La Verne Vanicek was called on to explain the procedure that the lodge officers will be elect-

ed by. Everyone who is eligible to hold office will receive a double card and they are to reply to the Nominating Committee 'b y October 27th as to what office they are willing to serve in. I hope you all will understand this procedure.

This will be only for officers. The delegates will be elected, also, in the next meeting, but they must have attended a, majority of the lodge meetings for the last three years — 1973, 1974, and 1975. The annual meeting will be held on Sunday, November 2nd, 1975, beginning at 1 p.m., so come and exercise your voting power and elect your lodge leaders for 1976.

President Jerry Pechal and Vice President Alfred Klusacek picked the following to be the committee to review the Rules and Regulations for 1976: chairman, Brother Anton Vitek, with. Brothers Emil Hail, Frank E. Klinkovsky, and Jimmy Allen and Sisters Ruby Bolton, Vlasta Hruska and Annie Jakubec, serving as committee members. This committee' will meet with the lodge officers to set up these rules and regulations.

Youth Leader Howard Steno, reported that 34 youths were present in the youth club meeting.

They reset the date for their hayride, scheduled last month but which was canceled. The new date is October 12th beginning at the Star Hall at 2 p.m. and proceeding to Johnie L. Vanicek's farm. The time of arrival back at the lodge is approximately 6 p.m. I am sure they will all have a good time.

Premium check recipients' names were read by Sister Lillian Kosarek.

Door prize winners were. Sister Carolou Allen and Brother Edwin •Chlapek. Sandwiches, chips, cakes, coffee, soft drinks and some "suds" donated by Brother Raymond Mikeska were enjoyed by everyone present. Remember these dates: Saturday, October 18th, workday at 8 a.m., and Sunday, November 2nd at 1 p.m. annual meeting with election of lodge officers and delegates to the next SPJST convention to be held in Waco, next year.

Also, come to any of the dances scheduled every Saturday, you'll have a good time, everytime, I guarantee you.

LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD

Dear Members: Due to the busy summertime with families enjoying vacations, I failed to tell you about our Elgin Western Days, which were great.

We entered two floats in the parade. Our youth group received first place in their category and also received first place for most original in the McDade Watermelon Parade several weeks earlier.

Not only did we have members from our local SPJST lodge, but we also noticed several from other lodges.

We set up three food booths at the Elgin Memorial Park — barbecue, kraut and sausage, and the youth group had sweets and plain pastries. All were delicious.

This annual occasion for Elgin is growing each year. Please try to attend next year and join us in all the fun.

Dear Readers: Our regular monthly meeting was held on Sunday, October 5th, at 3:30 p.m. The pledge of allegiance to the American flag was led by youth members David Dobecka and Eddie Hykel. David then recited the SPJST motto.

We had 21 adult members present at this meeting. All reports were given and approved as read.

The membership voted to have the annual Christmas party on December 14th.

The $2 door prize was won by Ruth Krizan; the $10 progressive door prize winner was Barbara Jean Hykel; the $7 progressive door prize winner was Betty Rose Mahan, who was not present.

Because of the memorial services held on the 1st Sunday of November at the local churches, our November meeting will be on Sunday, November 2, at 5 p.m. All members please make note of the time change.

The date of the District VII fall meeting has been changed due to conflicting dates for the sales representatives, district sales representative and the Supreme Lodge officers who would not be able to attend due to their attending the Fraternal Congress held on that date.

Kitchen Committee —seJsr-LODGE NO. 18, ELGIN The SPJST Lodge No. 18 held its monthly meeting on September 16th at the SPJST Lodge. The meeting opened with the pledge of allegiance followed by the roll call of officers.

The minutes of the August 19th meeting were read, followed by reports given by the treasurer and financial treasurer.

New members accepted were Dorothy J. Miller, Lori Jo Miller, Sherry Moore, Orvis Moore, William Lann, Nicole Bayless, Stacy Gruetzner, Debra Gruetzner and Chad Watson.

New business was discussed next with the main topic being the dedication of our lodge building on December 7th. The president announced the chairman of the Bar Committee being Wilford Alexander and Lois Lundgren, chairman of the Kitchen Committee.

Chairmen of the House Committee and Clean-up Committee are to be announced later by Vice President Paul Peterson.

Special thanks are to be given to Oscar Helegren who i not a member but is a very faithful worker. Also our very special thanks to Bill Ward, Wayne Skubiata, Morris Kastner and Andy Wolf who all gave a Saturday morning doing the brick work in front of the lodge.

Howard Kuehn stated that the tickets for the New Year's Eve dance are now on sale and they have to be gotten in advance.

The Bobby Brown Orchestra will provide the music for the evening's entertainment, with the festivities starting at 8 p.m. and Continuing until 12.

President Gustafson stated that at the dedication on December 7th, a noon meal will be served consisting of turkey and dressing and all the trimmings, with a dance later in the day. The noon meal ticket will be $2.50 for an adult and $1.75 for a child under 10 years of age.

Motion to adjourn was passed with refreshments, fellowship, and touring of the new lodge following.

Fraternally, Mary Pavey SPJST — LODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH AND FRIENDSHIP CLUB Dear Members and Friends: The Friendship Club had 30 members present. Our president, Mary Tesar, made welcome our guests, Mary Powers and Dona Hubenak. We had several absent due to illness and we hope all will join us soon.

We are also happy to have as new members, Eunice (Toni) Miller and Mike Paprskar.

Plans were made for a Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and all the trimmings for our next meeting on Wednesday, November 5th, at 10:30 a.m. The club will furnish the turkey and dressing and for the members who were not present, you may bring pastry or a favorite dish.

Get-well cards were signed and sent to Rose Stehunan and Mary Saldona. Since then I learned Joe Polasek was in the Northwest Hospital and a card was sent to him. A speedy recovery is wished to you all.

Door prizes were won by Helen Paprskar, a beautiful rooster donated by Mrs. Strand and Wanda Mason won the cash prize.

Our lodge meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan. He made welcome Brother Hamilton who had not been with us for quite sometime.

Brother Milan read a note received from Lodge 54, West, and from Brother Alvin Ne,suda in reference to the sales representatives' meeting to be held at our lodge on Thursday, OctOber 9th at 7:30 p.m.

Get-well cards were sent to Margie Cline, Rose Steinman, Billy Sanders, Thane Parker and Joe Polasek. Sister Steinman is hoping to be released from the hospital this weekend. Hope everyone gets on the mend soon.

A new member accepted was George Curl, IV. The delicious fish dinner preceded the meeting was enjoyed by all. Thanks to all. Jeanie Mason will be in charge of the meat dish at our next meeting and the sisters are asked to bring a covered dish or pastry.

Dear Members: The regular meeting of Lodge No. 54 was called to order by President Ernest Zahirniak at 3 p.m. on October 5th.

Our meeting opened with the pledge of allegiance and a moment of silent tribute was held for our departed lodge sister, Mrs. Bennie Soukup. She served on the Reso111,tion Committee at the time of her death and was a past reporter for the lodge. We extend our sympathy to her loved ones and may she rest in eternal peace.

Brother Frank Cocek read the minutes of the last meeting which were approved as read. Correspondence was also acknowledged.

A financial report was given by Brother Bob Wright.

President Zahirniak reported that Editor Rudy Sefeik was recovering from surgery in the Vet erans Administration Hospital in Temple. A speedy recovery was wished to him from the lodge's membership and a get-well card was sent to him.

It was reported that Sister Maxine Sefcik was attending the Dist.

V meeting at Lodge 88 in Houston.

In addition to Brother Zahirnia.k's report, he mentioned that the walk-in cooler was installed and is in operation to serve the purpose for our huge activities.

President Zahirniak announced that the District III fall meeting will be held October 19th, at Lodge 35, Elk. The door prize recipient was Brother Ernest Zahirniak.

The membership decided not to hold a meeting in November because there will be several memorial services held in the local and surrounding areas on November 2nd. Keep in mind that the next meeting will be held on December 7th, at 3 p.m., when election of officers and delegates will take place and snacks and refreshments will be served after the meeting.

Mona Zahirniak, Reporter —SPJSTRowena, Texas October 6, 1976 Dear Members and Delegates of SPJST District IV, and to Whom It May Concern: The recent resignation of our representative to the By-Law Committee, Brother B. W. PasBeek, and also his substitute, Sister Pat LaWrence, necessitated the call for a special election committee within the district.

With the approval of the Supreme lodge officers, District IV President Arthur Lisso appointed the following to serve on this committee: Chairman, Sister Pauline Shiller, District IV secretary, and Brothers Emil Kvasnicka and George Ruppert.

Out of the ten lodges of District IV, eight were seated at the 21st SPJST Convention in June 1972, and therefore eligible to vote. From these eight lodges, seven responded and their votes are listed as follows: For representative replacement: William Urbanek of Lodge No. 40, 473 votes.

For substitute: Jess Hajek of Lodge No. 95 — 420 votes.

The voting was done by secret ballot on October 6, 1975.

Ballots were counted at the First National Bank in Rowena, by the committee.

Czech Handmade Kroje (Costume) Displayed in SPJST Museum LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, MUSEUM Dear Readers: It has been some time since I have reported on the growth of our museum which is slowly growing, from day to day. We have some fine gifts added to our museum including a most outstanding Czech kroje (costume) sent to us

by Mrs. George B. Malone of Wilmington, Delaware. Mrs. Malone had this kroj made in Czechoslovakia many years ago for her daughter who outgrew it and she has graciously donated it to our museum. It is an outstanding piece of work on which many Czech artisans worked several months and it is now on display in our museum. Another unusual kroj is also on display in our museum, donated by the Jos. F. and Marie Vanek family of Schulenburg which Mrs. Marie (Tylich) Vanek brought to America in 1902 and it is, over 100 years old and still very beautiful. We invite everyone to come and see these two fine displays and many other interesting displays which we have here.

In building these displays I had a hard time locating shoes, hose, and wigs to make the display really outstanding and I would very much appreciate it if you ladies out there in SPJST land have any cast off, not needed shoes, hose, wigs, ribbons, hats, gloves, in fact anything that you don't have any further use for, to please send them to our museum. This will place your name in the Golden Book of donors and even though we may not

VE'STNtle need those items immediately, we will use them as needed and keep them in storage for future use and you will be given proper credit for them. Help us build the kind of museum we can all be proud of.

We invite you and your clubs to come see your museum which is open very day, Monday through Irt'' (lay born 11 a.m. til 5 p.m., with one hour off at noon. Special sewing can be arranged for you or your club upon request. Just drop us a line and let us know when you or your club would like to come down and we shall arrange to be here.

If you have any old items that have some historical value that you would like to have represent your family to the public day after day, year after year, there is no better place for them than your SPJST Museum. Drop us a line and tell us what you have and we'll reply by return mail if we can use them.

Fraternally, Rose Scott - SPAT — UNCORRECTED MINUTES OF THE DISTRICT VII MEETING HELD APRIL 13, 1975 Following are the uncorrected minutes of the District VII meeting held on April 13, 1975 in Violet, Texas, Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi, serving as the host lodge.

The meeting was called to order at 11 a.m. by District President Bob Bayer. The pledge to the U.S. flag was led by John Bayer, District VII flag bearer.

Brother Frank C. Sacky of Lodge 79, president, welcomed all the members and guests.

Brother Bayer asked the members and guests to stand and pay respect to the members who had departed since the last meeting.

Roll call of lodges revealed that Lodges Nos. 79, 107, 117, 133, 137, 147, and 161 were represented.

Roll call of District VII officers revealed that all were present except Brother Alvin Hrna, treasurer.

A letter from SL President Nick Morris was read. He conveyed his best wishes to the officers and membership of District VII and regretted that he was unable to be with us on April 13th.

Brother Stasa also brought a telephone message from Brother Rudy Sercik; editor of the Vestnik, who was unable to attend the meeting because he was in the VA Hospital.

The treasurer's report was given

by Sister Maxine Pavliska, as follows: Youth Fund — $707.11; General Fund $284.32.

Sister Tillie Valchar, District VII sales representative, gave her report. She reported that in 1974 District VII insurance sales were $539,275, and the quota was $525,000, with 202 new members. She stated that a banquet will be held at a later date. Sales champions for 1974 were Frank C. Sacky, 36 members, $165,000 insurance; Roy Hranicky, 20 members, $105,000 insurance. Brother Frank C. Sacky was in the Application-a-Month Club for 158 months. Sister Helen Pavelka, 105 months, Sister Thelma Hrncir, 24 months.

Sister Maxine Pavliska, District VII Youth Counselor, explained the disbursements of funds. District camp was set for June 11, 12. 13, and 14. The children were to take sack lunches for the first night.

Rest Homes Director Eugene Urncir stated that there were 72 guests at Taylor Rest Home and 58 guests at Needville Rest Home. Corrections in the Taylor home were made, such as an overhead sprinkler system, fire alarms and smoke detectors. All doors had to be replaced with solid doors and also widened; this was done according

Brother Frank Veselka, District VII director, reported that three SPJST lodge buildings were under construction and that more lodge 'homes should be built. Loans are

coming in fast. He stated that seminars are very instructive and educational and should have been begun years ago.

July 27th was the date set for YAD with Lodge 117, Robstown, as host lodge.

Brother Emil Matula, Lodge 133, presented a 50-year pin to Sister Mary Valicek.

Secretary - Treasurer Leonard Mikeska reported on the financial standing of the Supreme Lodge and stated that it was in excellent condition. In 1974 there was a net increase of 1,017 members and a net gain of 5 1/2 million dollars. In 1974, SL paid out a large amount of benefits (373 death claims, nearly 1 million dollars). He stated that Brother Frank Veselka represents District VII very well.

Next district meeting will be hosted by Lodge 107, Floresville, date to be announced later.

CZECH CLASSES AT ALVIN JUNIOR COLLEGE Conversational Czech is again being taught at Alvin Junior College, Alvin, Texas. This is the third term the course is being offered. Twenty-three students have enrolled to date. Classes began September 16 and will meet each Tuesday for a period of ten weeks.

This year it was decided to conduct the class in two sessions each of one and one-half hours duration. Starting at 6:30 p.m. and continuing to 8 p.m., beginners and those wishing review assemble for instruction in the fundamentals of phonics, spelling and pronunciation. Simple sentences, greetings and phrases used in everyday conversation are stressed.

From 8 to 9:30 p.m. advanced students begin their study of more difficult phases. Translations of paragraphs from well-known authors, including reading and translating poetry and pastoral songs prompts students to proceed on their own and at their own speed.

The enrollees are encouraged to attend both sessions of classes scheduled. Many remain for the full three hours. There seems to have developed a close-knit friendship among the participants. This spirit has evolved so well that special abilities are demonstrated.

One program is of particular merit

Letters and cards sent to the class members from friends and relatives in Czechoslovakia give us a closer view and better understanding of our heritage and culture. In turn, we are developing our own style in letter writing for closer ties with acquaintances in Czechoslovakia.

The class has been asked to assist our librarian hi cataloging the Czech books on the library shelves.

These books include Many purchased by the students paid for by their efforts in sale of "kolace a kavu" during Alvin Junior College's 25th anniversary. Other books and texts added to our collection were purchased and sent directly from Praha. These latter books were bought with the gracious assist from the SPJST last year.

With all of us diligently at work and developing an appreciation for our parents' first language, Czech at Alvin Junior College should be considered as a continuously offered ethnic language.

14 SLAVONIC MUTUAL FIRE INS. ASSN., CHAPTER 9, FT. WORTH Dear Brothers and Sisters: The next meeting of the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Assn.

Chapter 9 will be held on October 19th, at 2 p.m. This meeting will be at the Eagle Mountain Athletic Center. SP.IST Lodge 154 and Sokol. By now I imagine that most of you have probably been there to attend either the opening of the building or some other function, so you will know how to get there.

Election of officers for the coming year will be one of the orders of business at this meeting so all of you try to attend if possible. As usual, the ladies are asked to please bring pastries to go with the meal which is served after the meeting and furnished by the chapter.

It was good to see so many of our friends at the convention which was held here at the Sheraton Hotel in August. Our congratulations to all of the officers who were re-elected and the newlyelected officers at our headquarters. We had a very nice turnout at the social that was held at the Sheraton on Sunday night, then at the dinner on Monday at the Eagle Mountain Athletic Center.

Everyone seemed to have enjoyed both activities.

We extend our get-well wishes to Sister Rosie Steinman who at the present time is at St. Thseph Hospital with a back injury received in an automobile accident some time ago. Hope she will be up and around before long.

FEATURES THE NATIONAL FRATERNAL CONGRESS OF AMERICA MEETS IN CINCINNATL OHIO

(The following news release was received recently from the National Fraternal Congress on the recently completed 89th Annual Meeting in Cincinnati. We have added the information pertaining to the SPJST. —NAM).

Cincinnati — Project "TO of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) has received official recognition from the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration (ARBA).

That was the message brought to more than 600 delegates attending the 89th Annual Meeting of the NFCA here September 21-24

by Delbert Black, ARBA Midwest regional director from Chicago.

Black presented a Bicentennial Flag and ARBA Certificate of Official Recognition.

Project '76 involves a three-part program supported by the 99 societies which made up the NFCA. It is designed to focus attention on Stony Hill Schoolhouse, Fredonia, Wis., as the birthplace of Flag Day during America's Bicentennial in 1976.

It was at Stony Hill on June 14, 1885, that Bernard J. Cigrand led his pupils in a special tribute to a 38-star, 10-inch-high flag which was atop his desk. That was the beginning of his campaign to have a special day set aside in our nation to pay honor to our flag.

It is anticipated that millions of Americans will learn more of Stony Hill and its heritage as the result of the NFCA program. Project '76 will include programs by the 52,000 local fraternal units in their own communities as they prepare for Flag Day, June 14, 1976.

Among the 600 delegates attending the th annual NFCA meeting from the SPJST were SL President Nick A .Morris, Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, District I Director John Kubena., and District III Director Sid Pokladnik. Brother Pokladnik was elected president of the Fraternal Section, after having served that section as secretarytreasurer and vice president. He and the other officers and directors were installed by at President

VESTNXK Nick Morris. Among the new directors elected to this section was Henry Riemer, grand president of the Sons of Herraarm of Texas.

Brother Pokladnik also serves on the NFCA Executive Committee, having two more years to serve on a three-year term.

Delegates to the COngress chose Dr. John H. Griffin, chief medical officer of the Knights of Columbus, as the new NFCA president. Dr. Griffin graduated from. Boston College in 1935 and from Tufts University Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, in 1939. He served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps from 1941 to 1047.

From 1947 to 1964 he engaged in the general practice of medicine and surgery in Hughesville, Md., and was chief of the medical staff at Physicians Memorial Hospital in LaPlata, Md. He was elected supreme director in 1960, chosen deputy supretne knight in 1964 and supreme physician in 1966. In June 1966 he was named a Knight of St. Gregory the Great by Pope Paul VI for his outstanding devotion to Christian ideals.

Dr. Griffin has been active in the NFCA for 10 years, serving as a direct& since 1972 and as vice president during 1974-75.

Elected NFCA. vice president for 1975-76 was William J. Wenger, president, National Mutual Benefit, Madison, Wis. Henry F. Scheig, president of Aid Association for Lutherans, Appleton, Wis., retired as NFCA president but will continue to serve on the executive committee as immediate past president.

The Congress also elected three new members to the 12-member executive committee. Each will serve a three-year term. New directors are: Geraldine Towner, president, Royal Neighbors of America, Rock Island, Ill.; George Batyko, president, Greek Catholic Union of the U.S.A., Munhall, Pa.; and Florence V. Welch, president, National Catholic Society of Foresters, Chicago.

Serving on the committee for one additional year are Mrs. Mildred Cruikshank, national secretary, Degree of Honor Protective Association, St. Paul, Mimi.; Wharton F. Hood, senior vice president-administration and executive secretary, Independent Order of Foresters, Don Mills, Ont.; and David L. Springob, president, Catholic Family Life Insurance, Milwaukee, Wis. On accepting the preaidency Dr. Griffin announced that the theme for the coming fraternal year will be: "Fraternalism fosters patriotism." He stressed that patriotism is especially atuned to the need of the moment. "Our members in the United States are celebrating the nation's bicentennial," he stated.

"Our members in Canada, like their American counterparts, are equally interested in revitalizing love of country which has been undercut and tarnished in the social turmoil of the past decade. Today is an appropriate time to emphasize anew the many contributions which the fraternal societies have made to their countries and which all citizens have received from this land. We must remind the world of the great love which our members have for their native or perhaps adopted land. Let the world know what we have done for our country — by doing it again."

Dr. Griffin became the first physician to head the National Fraternal Congress since Dr. Royal H. Gerand, chief medical officer of the Supreme Tribe of Ben Hur, stepped down as president in 1918.

The new president announced that he would apply a physician's touch to his administration. "When a doctor looks at a patient," he said, "he sizes up the sources of recuperative power in that person even more than the illness besetting him. Ultimately it will be these vital resounces that with proper help will fight off and overcome the sickness. I think that the fraternal body has tremendous inner sources of energy and vitaii ty. These must be awakened, stimulated and channeled. That will be the task of not just your president but of all of us during the coining year. For this great fraternal renewal I ask and shall rely on the

Through support of Project '76, NFCA members are continuing their efforts to promote proper respect for the flag. The June 14th date was officially proclaimed Flag Day by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Fraternal Week traditionally is observed that week in which Flag Day falls.

The Stony Hill school property, about 30 miles north of Milwaukee, was acquired by the Wisconsin State Fraternal Congress. It established the National Fraternal Flag Day foundation, which has maintained the property. The Foundation is administering Project '76 in cooperation with the president of the NFCA. During the final general session on September 24th, U. S. Senator Robert Taft, Jr., senior senator from Ohio, told assembled delegates "we should eliminate government from those areas where it need not be involved, having less interference of government in local affairs." He called for elimination of red tape in government, including the abolition of the Interstate Cbmmerce Commission and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The senator concluded by praising the efforts of the NFCA for Project '76.

The 10 sectional meetings and three general sessions also included 'numerous topics of interest to delegates who represented the more than 10 million fraternal society members in the U.S. and Canada.

Several speakers emphasized the importance of the fraternal system's objectives and what they mean to people in the 1970s.

"Fraternalism Makes a Difference" was the theme of Scheig's year as NFCA president.

Robert Keeton, manager of the economic research department of Procter and Gamble Company, Cincinnati, said the worst recession since World War II has bottomed out and there should be an improved business climate in the months ahead. He told delegates government must hold spending in check while economic recovery brings about an increase in tax receipts. The only way to obtain "control over the inexorable rise in federal spending is for the administration and Congress to avoid new spending programs."

president and economist of Federated Research Corporation, Pittsburgh, declared that in order to stimulate a strong economy there must be a shift from consumption and government spending to capital investment.

Dr. Harold Edrich, director of research services of the Institute of Life Insurance, New York City, said "the psychology of entitlement is one of the most powerful social forces operating in the country today." An example would be people's transformation of the desire for a secure retirement into the right to a secure retirement.

Edward J. Lampron, associate justice of the Supreme Court of New Hampshire, indicated "there might . . . develop a trend toward a broadened court review of the method by which decisions are reached (by fraternal associations) and their bases when they deal with bylaws which might affect the member's rights under his insurance certificate." Justice Lampron, while stating that various ethnic groups will be recognized during the Bicentennial for their contributions, also pronounced that such a reputation places a heavy responsibility on fraternal organizations to "issue clearly written contracts."

Bartley L. Munson, associate actuary with Aid Association for Lutherans, Appleton, Wis. said: "There are things we could and should do to improve the quality of information to the life insurance buyer." He cited recent surveys of the buying public to stress the need for more and better ways of bringing "useful information."

Spencer L. Kimiball, executive director, American Bar Foundation, and professor of law at the University of Chicago, told delegates that "the first serious effort to evaluate the insurance laws comprehensively and to produce an internally consistent and integrated insurance code has taken place in Wisconsin over the past ten years."

Kimball went on to state that "the only full satisfactory justification for tax exemption is performance of public services of a kind reasonably like those the public might otherwise provide from public revenues: education, welfare, community-improving activities." He concluded: "In the last analysis that is of the essence of true fra-

ternalism; it is the rent the fraternal pays for its privileged location in our society." (This was one of the points that President Morris brought out at the recent District V meeting in Houston).

Martin L. Koehneke, vice president-fraternal affairs, Aid Association for Lutherans, defined fra-

ternalism as "love in action." He said fraternalists should "encourage each other, help each other, and share with each other in such a way that we gain strength from each other and success together on terms common to us all — our mutual commitment, each in his own way, to engage in the practice of love."

Results of a questionnaire of local units of 64 of the 99 NEVA member societies revealed that in the last year fraternal benefit societies spent more than $60 million for various charitable, educational, religious and health-related programs in 1974. Fraternal members also donated more than 1.7 million hours to community service, 905,145 hours of service to the disabled, made 990,107 visits to the sick, and served as blood • donors 145,404 times.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On October 5th, we held our monthly youth club meeting. Concerning old business, we discussed our dance, Dogpatch, USA, which we had looked forward to for a long time. After the dance (held Saturday night, Oct. 11th), we prepared ourselves to go to the State Fair on October 12th. Darrell Uptmor won second place in Foods and Theresa Dobecka placed third in Home Arts; plus our club won Youth . Club of the Year, and Sister Willie Mae Schuet7 —11 placed second highest in the Leader of the Year competition.

We went to West Rest Haven on October 8th and to Six Flags on October 12th.

On October 19th there will be a District III meeting held at Lodge 35 in Elk. A surprise Halloween party will be held on October 31st. Everyone try to attend these activities.

We are having a newspaper drive for two weeks; bring them to the lodge by October 17th. We are also collecting Campbell labels and aluminum cans during October and November. We also will be selling Stanley products for two weeks.

LODGE NO. 30, TAITON Dear Readers, Sunday, October 5th, the Talton sPJST Youth Club held their regular monthly meeting at 3 p.m., at the Taiton Community Center.

President Glenn Kahanek called the meeting to order. Patrick Krpec led the pledge and Diane Dluhos said the prayer.

We discussed our fall district meeting that was held in Hallettsville. The participating members from Taiton were Clare Dorotik, Brenda Kresta, Karen Kahanek, Rosann Dorotik, Marjorie Treumer, Yvonne Kresta, Vicki Dorotik, Melissa Zboril and Yvonne Krpec. At the district meeting, we performed 'a patriotic drill, sang two patriotic songs, and performed a hobo dance to "Cotton Candy," which had won second place at the State YAD. We also had door prizes given away: a bathroom basket, and three arrangements. I would like to thank the ladies from Hallettsville who piepared the meal.

We then voted on whether we wanted a Halloween party or not.

The majority voted yes and we will have our Halloween party, October 31st, at 5:30 p.m. in the Taiton Community Center. We were asked to bring poems about Thanksgiving to our November meeting. We then discussed our Christmas party, which will be discussed more at our November meeting.

Next, we had had a Halloween party in which Yvonne Krpec, Clare Dorotik, Jerome Dorotik, Jr., and Vicki Dorotik read poems and short stories about Halloween. The Halloween masks that the members were asked to make at home and bring were then judged. Yvonne Krpec won first place, Russell Zboril won second place, and Clare Dorotik won third place. The door prize winners were then announced.

Next, we had a craft workshop.

wash cloths and the boys decorated balls for Christmas. Then everyone enjoyed refreshments of cookies, cake, and drinks.

INTERLOCK KNITS ARE GREAT FOR FEMININE FASHIONS Interlock knits — one of today's newest fabrics — help create the popular soft, feminine lightweight fashions, but they require several precautions for success in sewing, Beverly Rhoades, a clothing specialist, says.

"Homesewers can find interlock knits in a wide range of solids and brightly colored heat transfer prints, and they often cost less than similar quality traditional double knits, because the knitting method Is mechanically fast, efficient and easy.

Miss Rhoades is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

"To identify an interlock knit, look at the cut edge along the width of the fabric. On interlock knit looks the same on both sides, with a back loop opposite each front loop, producing parallel vertical rows of loops," she explained.

"Most pattern styles suitable for soft, lightweight fabrics are appropriate for interlock knits, too.

But avoid styles with many small pattern pieces such as yokes or inserts," she cautioned.

To sew on interlocks, the specialist recommends using the same general techniques that apply to lightweight double knits — with a few additional safeguards.

"These are necessary because interlocks will run (like nylon hosiery) along the vertical loops in one direction, only.

"To identify the direction of the run, gently spread the vertical loops apart at each end, and the problem end will show."

To prevent or check against runs, cut garment pieces — when possible — so that the hem edge is .cut along the edge that runs.

This way, if a small run starts in the hem allowance, it can be

"When handling the fabric after cutting, do not stretch the fabric along the cut edge that runs. Stay stitch or zig zag to stabilize this cut edge.

The specialist reminded homesewers to handle the fabric gently during construction and when wearing or caring for the garment, because runs may start when yarns of the fabric are broken. But again, fabric sealing products will stop these runs, she said.
