Congratulations to new SPJST State Queen Jan Hajda, King Stephen Parrish, Duchess Susannah Marburger, and Duke Russell Bond who were chosen at the State YAD Royalty competition Saturday) September 27, at Lodge 80, Holland.

With 72 hours, which were al-

lowed us by our doctor, since all the necessary tests had been completed, we returned to West late Thursday, September 25th, to contribute our part to the completion of the Vestnik issue of October 1 Then, on Saturday afternoon,

September 27th, we journeyed on to Lodge No. 80, Holland, for the State Royalty competition, which began at 4 p.m. Again this year the royalty was wonderful and certainly the judges were faced with a very difficult task of deciding on the winners. It was so close, in fact that a tie for 1st place resulted in one contest, which had to be resolved. ALL the contestants are to be congratulated for doing so well and for their display of such fraternal sportsmanship. All parents should be proud, and, of course, they are!

A very large and attentive audience was present and Lodge No. 80 proved to be wonderful hosts.

The meal was tasty and their building is very spacious with their addition.

This week we publish the "official" pictures of the winners. We only took a few pictures ourselves. We regret that we had to leave early and missed the dance, however, the doctor requested that we stay off that bothersome left leg as much as possible. * * Sunday, September 28th, we had promised to attend the District VI meeting at the Hallettsville Ameri can Legion Hall. The meeting was convened by District VI President Edwin Smajstrla (also District VI Sales Representative) who conducted it with dispatch, District VI Secretary Elaine Berkovsky read

Wednesday, October 8, 1975 a very thorough set of minutes of the last meeting and all District VI officers gave good and thorough reports.

District VI Youth Counselor Elsie Brdecka and the youth clubs presented a short and very nice program immediately after the meeting convened and before the business session began.

From the Supreme Lodge, Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and Financial Secretary Ben Za.bcik gave their respective rePorts and Brother Jerry Mikulas from Brother Zabcik's department, was introduced by Brother Zabeik and spoke a few words to the gathering.

Yours truly spoke, briefly, explaining his reason for having the tests made at the hospital and wishing all present good health and spirits.

Our thanks to all the well-wishers for their sincere expressions.

Vestnik Publisher Linn A. Pescala and wife, Sue, along with their small son, were present for this meeting. Brother Pascale, took a nice picture of the "Ceske Flinn') Victoria singing group which sang some beautiful and well-listened-to songs under the leadership of organist Mr. Bittersmann. This group was presented through the efforts of members such as Brother Motal and others. You all were certainly appreciated and we urge you to keep it up. We also took some photos, earlier.

From there it was a must for a speedy journey back. We enjoyed the day and hope our pictures arrive soon to be printed early.

$ We have a spaghetti dinner planned for Sunday, October 19th at 12 noon at the Eagles (small hall) in Galveston, located at 1906 Post Office St. The menu will consist of spaghetti, meat sauce, tossed salad and garlic bread, cooked by none other than our fine Brother Joe Polivka. Brother Joe is one of our new members, but you wouldn't know it the way he has offered his help. If you have not tried his spaghetti you have missed a delicious treat. The cost of this wonderful treat will be $1.50 adult, 75c for a child under 12 years of age. Orders may be taken out.

Serving time will start at noon and will continue until 3 p.m., ‘ or until sold out. There will also be good cold beer and soft drinks on hand at an extra cost.

Our fine ladies will have on hand to sell some of their delicious pastries that they are known for, such as: kolache, cakes, pies, etc.

Ladies, please bring your pastry.

From 3 to 7 p.m. we will have some entertainment on hand for you. We will have accordion music for you to sing and dance to.

December 7th is set for our annual Christmas dinner and dance; this is free to our members. During the meal, turkey and dressing, and the beer and soda pop will be furnished; the drinks will be sold during the dance.

Friends are invited to gather up a friend or two for this date. We encourage you to bring your youth also, because they are our leaders of tomorrow.

STATE YAD ROYALTY HELD SEPTEMBER 27, 1975 AT LODGE NO. 80, HOLLAND

STATE YAD ROYALTY * * Picture of new king and queen with the 1975 contestants will appear in next weeks issue. * * The State Royalty YAD was held September 27, 1975, with Lodge No. 80, Holland, as host for this beautiful event to climax the youth year.

After the welcome by SYD Dorothy Massey and Lodge 80 President David Ivicic, the contestants began their speeches. There were six queens and six kings in the competition, with each queen having her duchess, and five kings having a duke. This year each of the dukes and duchesses were asked why they wanted to be a duke or duch-

ess, then they walked out on the runway. They are always so cute and add so much to the program.

(District IV was not represented with their contestants). All the contestants did a good job presenting their speeches, and the two top queens had to have a run-off.

Congratulations to Miss Jan Hajda and Stephen Parrish, the chosen queen and king. Jan represented District II, and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frankie Hajda, Jr., of Lodge 20, Granger.

Stephen also represented District II, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Parrish, of Lodge 74, Lovelady. We are very proud of these two young people who will represent the SPJST during the coming

year and their picture (which was made that day) will appear on the 1976 SPJST calendar.

District I was represented by Susan Trcalek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Trcalek, Caldwell, Lodge 17. Her duchess was Sheila Hildebrand, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Hildebrand, Caldwell, and members of Lodge 17.

District II was represented by the newly crowned queen, Jan Hajda. Her duchess was Susannah Marburger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Marburger of Granger, Lodge 20.

District III was represented by Cynthia Banik, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Banik, of West, Lodge 35. She was the first runnerup for queen. Her duchess was Dawn Pavelka, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Edward Pavelka, Waco, Lodge 35.

District V was represented by Arlene Malak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Malak, Lodge 88, Houston. Her duchess was Kristen Ann Lamza, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert E. Lamza, Lodge Houston. Arlene was the second unner-up for queen.

District VI was represented by Peggy Kalina, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Kalina, Jr., Wharton, Lodge 58. Her duchess was Sandra Spacek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

First, I have to borrow someone's notes that they took at the gntertainment Committee meeting on September 12th.

Last Sunday, Randy decided to lay some carpeting in a small room and in doing so, he covered over everything which lay on the floor, including my notes. Naturally, he denies seeing them, but I know I put those notes down in that room when he called me to help staple the padding to the floor. I can imagine the laugh we will get years from now when we replace that carpeting and find my entertainment notes dated September 19751, plus candy wrappers, crumpled potato chips and two funny books which he was reading while I struggled with the stapler.

Our next denim is all western, with the Vra.zels furnishing the music. CLUB

Dear Members and Friends: Wednesday, September 24th, the Birthday Club sisters chartered a bus to journey to Temple. We left Lodge 88 at 8:30 a.m. and arrived at the Supreme Lodge at 11:45 a.m.

When we arrived at the Supreme Lodge, Brother Otto Hanus came to the bus to welcome us all. Our SPJST is indeed fortunate to have a member like Brother Otto Hanus who is so interested in the museum, which is one of the most interesting museums that I have seen and it keeps you captivated for hours. Many thanks to you, Brother Hanus. God bless you!

8 in the offices were very pleasant and accommodating to us, which helped make our visit enjoyable.

We had thirty sisters and five brothers an the trip. They were Sisters Margaret Bohac, Anna Hoffman, Della Kadlecek, Willie Stang, Mary Tilich, Frances Dvorak, Clara Jecmenek, Agnes Lesak, Josephine Burl, Helen Valcik, Louise Chudej, Evelyn Mikeska and her mother, Tracy Mac-at, Rosalee Kostom, Leddie Kadera, Evelyn Mikolas, Rose Horelice, Mary Sandemon, Pearl Hanka, Frances 0lexa, Alice Bay, Willie Mae Wood, Mary Russell, Lillian Finn, Verlene Dunn, Emily Sebek, Naomi Kostom, Estelle Kelly and Willie Simecek.

We were honored to have these brothers to go with us: Brothers Tim Kostom, Frank Tilich, Frank Dvorak, Frank Sebek and Harry Finn. We had plenty of food, beverages, songs, and laughter. In all, it was a great trip. Thanks to the Birthday Club Committee — Sisters Frances 0/exa and Rosalee Kostom.

One of the highlight.s of the return trip home, was when Brother Tim Kostom directed the bus operator to go by the Veterans Administration Hospital. Brother Kostom got off the bus and went into the hospital. Much to our surprise Brother Tim brought our dear Brother Sefcik to the door of the hospital, so we could all wave to Brother Rudy. We were all so happy to see Brother Rudy, and we wish him a speedy recovery! (We would all have loved to have gotten off the bus and shook your hand, Brother Rudy).

We arrived home from our trip about 5:30 p.m. Everyone was happy after such a beautiful trip.

Our Birthday Club president, Willie Mae Wood, is off to visit her family in Los Angeles, California, again. Have a good trip, Willie Mae! This is a special report but I will inform you of all our activities after our regular meeting in October. Keep smiling!

Dear Members and Friends: The September meeting of Lodge No. 35, Elk, was called to order

by President Henry Breitkreutz.

The pledge of allegiance was led by youth club members Eddie Banik, Sondra Dieterich, and Jodie Wilson.

A moment of silence was held for our departed lodge member, Brother Adolf Kubitza.

Visitors who were welcomed were John Michael Rhidenhur, Tillie Matus, and William Rauschuber.

Brother Albert Banik read the minutes of the last meeting. He also read a thank-you note from Brother Rudolph Zalman following his stay in the hospital. Brother Gene PaveIke came up and personally thanked everyone for the flowers sent to him while he was in the hospital.

Brother Henry Breitkreutz, Jr., gave the treasurer's report.

Sister Rosemarie Banik gave the youth club report. She gave the results of the State YAD. Cynthia, Denise and Charlotte Banik placed third in talent and Terri Hand placed second in crafts. She also stated that our club placed fifth in the state. She mentioned that a cake walk would be held on September 20th.

The September birthdays recognized were Jodie Wilson, Rosemarie Banik, Martha Mladenka, Ella Mary Kimball, Carrie Kimball, and Erwin Dieterich. Happy birthday to all our September birthdays!

The chairmen all gave their reports. Sister Rosemarie Banik, kitchen report; Brother Gene Pavelka, entertainment report; and Brother Henry Breitkreutz, Sr., refreshment report. They all gave very encouraging reports.

New members accepted were: Linda Pavelka, Billy Frank Pavelka, Julie Michelle Engledow, and a change over, Mark Wood.

Under old basiness, the Scholarship Committee put forth its recommendations and they were accepted.

The body voted to have the Rules and Regulations of our lodge printed into book form.

It was accepted to take a bus to Holland on September 27th for the State Royalty contest.

Brother Gene Pavelka asked what everyone thought about going to the Toiri Sefelk Hall in Seaton for

We discussed our clean-up day, which will be held on October 12th; this is our regular meeting date, so clean-up will start at 10 in the morning. Lunch will be served instead of supper and the meeting will begin after we finish with the cleaning. We will be looking forward to seeing you on that day.

We will be getting the lodge premises ready for the District III meeting which will be on October 19th.

It will be time to elect officers in a couple of months so the nominating committee was appointed.

The committee members are: Sister Elizabeth Kubitza, and Brothers Ernest Banik and Henry Breitkreutz, Sr. There being no further business, the checks were passed out and the door prizes were drawn. The winners were Jason Brown for the youth and Lynn Brown for the adult members.

After this the meeting was adjourned and the Kitchen Combo was introduced. This band is composed of ladies who have made their instruments from household items. They are very entertaining and we always enjoy having them visit with us.

After the entertainment we all helped devour the delicious barbecue served for the evening meal.

I suppose this concludes my report for this time. Hope to see all of you on October 12th in your "clean-up" clothes.

Our unique Sokol Houston Gymnast girls certainly well-deserved the recognition they received for their exciting appearance and the same goes for the new costumed Czech Reseda dancing youth from Lodge 88, both of the above units rewarded by enthusiastic acclaim. No words are really necessary to describe the SPJST Czech Brass Band of Brother Dybala and the Dance Band of Brother Clarence Baca.

They both had the attention and approval from the large audiences.

In all the Czech-American Cultural Heritage participation, there were ten performances and Sister Birdie Hilsher and Brother Emil Kuropata, president of the Sokol, both also served as MCs at two of the stages.

Among the very many refreshments offered on the boulevard on the lawn in front of Brother and Sister Alfred Hilsher's home, there were three stands with coffee, lemonade, punch, snowcones and cotton candy. I don't know how many hundreds of dozens of Czech kolache Sister Hilsher brought, but I do know there were endless lines patiently waiting all afternoon, and, among these were all the dignitaries of the event, to be served these most delicious Czech kolache that were especially made in Fayetteville and brought to Houston for this occasion by Sister Birdie. This well-known Czech pastry continuously, for four hours, prepared and warmed to retain the peak of flavor by Sister Anna Mae Flukinger. Even the television cameramen came to this busy, spot where I also had the pleasure of serving as hostess.

With the assistance of Brother Victor and Sister Lillia Mae Peter of Pasadena, Sister Tina Filip, Mary Bohn, Brother Arthur and Sister Lenora Kocurek, and, of course, our indispensable Brother Billy Hilsher, and last, but not least, Brother Alfred Hilsher, who brought a whole slab of barbecue from one of the neighboring fraternal societies, and big buckets of fried chicken for all the workers at the Hilsher's front lawn refreshment activity. Thank you, Brother Alfred!

Of note is that our Sokol Houston will present another evening in the series of English films presentation on the Czech Cultural Heritage. Brother Emil Kuropata, president of Sokol, will soon announce the date decided on by Brother Pech, Sister Hilsher, and himself. The great achievement of the Czech - speaking nation certainly carved its own niche in the permanent archives of the World's Cultural History. In particular, we American-Czeehs are most proud of the innumerable cultural contributions Of our National Czech Cultural Heritage made through our pioneers and their descendants into our own great American culture as Brother Pech so eloquently describes and presents in his address and lectures on Czech history. These beautiful films, narrated in English, deal exclusively with Czech national arts, history, architecture, national folklore and its colorful heritage of traditions, customs, songs, and its influence on the creative and performing Czech musical arts.

Those of you who saw the last presentation of the Slavonic dances

by Antonin Dvorak and the "Czech Song" by Bedrich Smetana, will never forget the beauty and the riches of the great Czech music and the incomparably depicted customs and traditions of the Czech Folklore Heritage of the four seasons of the year. These films and the historical comments and explanations will certainly remain for many of us and the thousands of viewers who have seen the several presentations by the Czech Fine Arts Society, a most memorable, unforgettable experience. This was the great Czech art in its finest. Now when the films are gone a happy memory will always enrich our hearts and knowledge.

The Concert Choral Society as already announced in the previous issue of the Vestnik, is preparing a special presentation as a Bicentennial celebration of a performance of the immortal music of Smetana, Dvorak, Kriskovsky and a special arrangement of the Czech-Moravian Folklore songs, music and dances by Brother Pech.

The monumental "Ceska pisen" ("The Czech Song"), and in the worlds choral literature the unequalled "Rolnicka," (the"Ode to the Tiller of the Soil"), by Bedrich Smetana, the festive "Gloria,"

by Antonin Dvorak and the beautiful masterpiece of the Moravian Folklore in the musical arts "Utonula" ("Love, Till Death Do Us Part"), by Krizkovsky, are studied.

This will be the premiere American performance of the fabulous "Rolnicka" and "Utonula" in the English translation and new choral arrangement by our conductor. The other two numbers have already had their first American performance in previous concerts oi the Concert Choral Society.

Being one of the founding members and serving on the Technical Committee since this choral society was founded as American-Czech Performing Arts Society, I would like to invite, on behalf of our conductor, myself, and every singing member, everyone interested in choral arts to join us in the study of the most beautiful music of the world in the English language, so that all audiences can understand and enjoy these masterpieces. Our repertoire consists of classical baroque and renaissance masterpieces and the music of the theatre and popular scores, especially arranged for our society.

From my own personal experience and also in the experience of everyone of our permanent singers, our rehearsals not only give satisfaction of study and learning under the direction of our distinguished conductor - arranger composer, but the two to three hours weekly are spent in jovial camaraderie as a recreational weekly activity leading to the accomplishment of concert presentations from the great treasury of the choral arts of the world and among these the incomparable, monumental Czech Choral Musical Treasury.

Rehearsals begin at 7:30 every Tuesday at the Sokol Houston auditorium, 1314 W. Patton Street in Houston. Previous musical knowledge is not necessary, only a good voice and the ability to hear and sing on pitch is necessary, and prompt, regular rehearsal attendance is compulsory.

Dear Members, Our lodge met on Sunday, September 21st at the Grant Building.

Following the opening of the meeting by President Frank Zabransky, the pledge to the U.S. flag was led

Brother Hilmer Galetka read resolutions of sympathy for our departed Brother, Alfred F. Simmons and Ernest P. Rother.

President Zabransky then recognized our guest, Brother Edwin Smajstrla, District VI Sales Representative from Victoria who is also president of District VI. Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes from our July and August meeting which were approved.

Correspondence followed.

Treasurer Johnnie Zak gave a financial report on Family Day, which was held in August.

Youth Leader Helen Zabransky gave a report on the youth club activities.

Brother Edwin Sanajstrla then spoke to the lodge on the good work District VI is doing in insurance sales to reach their goal for 1975 and also about the District VI fall meeting, which was held in Hallettsville, September 28.

We enjoyed having you with us, Brother Smajstrla, and we invite you and Mrs. Smajstrla to visit our lodge whenever you can.

Kadlecek recently celebrated his 75th birthday by having a small (?) dinner and, party at the lodge. He had many of his relatives and friends with hitn and I understand everyone e n j oyed themselves immensely, especially the birthday boy. Congratulations, Ed, and many, many, more!

Some other good news is that one of our brothers, who has been ill for some time is really showing signs of being on his way to good health again. Sister Pearl Hanka took Ernie for a short drive and outing. This is really a milestone on the way to his full recovery.

Keep up the good work, Ernie.

Also, I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank those who helped me celebrate my birthday a couple of Thursdays ago. I enjoyed the lovely cake, presents, but most of all I enjoyed having my friends around me, to share in that special day. Thanks friends!

Our District V Queen Arlene Malak was second runner-up and the winner was Jan Hajda from District II. The new State Xing is also from District II, and he is Stephen Parrish. I would like to congratulate the winners and all the participants, too. They are winners too, in their own right.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that I think District V has the best king and queen of them all, anyway, in John Griffin and Arlene Malak. Thank you for representing us so well.

We lost a brother, Clarence Mikel, who passed away in California.

Our deepest condolences and sympathy to his family and friends.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: On Thursday night, September 4th, the annual DSMA Awards Banquet was held at the StatlerHilton Hotel and our team was represented by a total of 33 people, the largest representation ever at the banquet by one team. We were there to receive our trophies, a league trophy for winning our leagues and a large trophy for fin1.shing first in the DSMA Dallas City Championship playoffs this past season.

Representing our team were nine players and their wives and fifteen lodge members including officers and their wives.

The other seven ball players could not attend because some are away in college and the rest of the players had other plans. We missed them and wish they could have been present.

It was a very nice banquet and we deeply appreciate the support we had at the banquet.

The mother lodge voted to send all the players and their wives to the banquet and to pay for their tickets. The softball team did accept this generosity, however, we didn't feel our team funds could stand the expense. It was agreed that the lodge would pay for the meals and that the team could have a function or dinner to raise funds and repay our mother lodge.

This was really appreciated by the team members and wives.

We are now planning a special Mexican dinner on Thursday night, October 23rd at 7 p.m. We are inviting all of our members, their families and neighbors to come to this dinner and help us raise funds for the team. We hope that a lot of you can attend and enjoy a delicious meal. More details will be given in the next issue of the Vestnik.

May I also remind our membership and readers that the SPJST Lodge 84 bazaar will be held on November 9th, and the softball team will be in charge of the sweets, pastry, and cake walk booth. We will be soliciting all kinds of sweets, cakes and other pastries for the booth and we will appreciate your contributions to our booth. More on the bazaar will be found in future editions of the Vestnik.

Again, the team wishes to thank our mother lodge for their generosity and support.

CZECH DAY SCHEDULED AT THE STATE FAIR OF TEXAS

Plans are being finalized for the '35th anniversary celebration of Czech Day at The State Fair of Texas to be held on Sunday, October 12th in Dallas. The festivities will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the program in the Coliseum. Taking part from the local area will be the West KJZT Junior Choral Group, the Abbott KJT-KJZT Beseda Dancers, and the Abbott children taking part in the Moravian Maypole Dance. Several local participants will take part in.a style show featuring authentic "Kroj" and will ride in the traditional Twilight Torch Parade.

The day's activity will continue at the Bandshell where music, food and refreshments will be served.

Other activities will take place on the Mobil Stage and at the Hall of State. This year's Czech Day promises to be bigger and better than ever before. Everyone is invited to attend and help make this a memorable day for the Czech-Moravian community in Texas.

CULTURE IN HOUSTON

First of all, with the Heights Festival successfully completed (Heights was largely settled by Czech pioneers), I am very proud of our Czech-American segment receiving so many compliments in every phase of our participation.

It seems the flawless and most impressive opening of the festival by our Concert Choral Society set the pattern of perfection followed by all the Czech-American participants The Czech Folklore Dancing Ensemble, the newly - costumed SPJST Youth Czech Beseda Dancers, the Sokol Gymnastic Girls, Rudolph Dybala and the SPJST Brass Band, and Clarence Baca's Band, which together with the brothers and sisters working the kolache and refreshment stand — all were acclaimed auspiciously. Sokol Houston will again sponsor the Concert Choral Society cultural activity, a Film Evening, as a Czech Fine Arts project. Sokol President Brother Emil Kuropata reserved the Sokol Auditorium at 1314 W. Patton Street, for Thursday, October 23rd, at 7:30 p.m.

That evening, somewhat different from the last film, presentation of Arts, Folklore Ballet, Customs and Traditions, the coming program of all English films will include: "Zeme a lide" (The Land of Its People), which is an unique panoramic and kaleidoscopic review.

From the land of our forefathers, interesting glimpses of old city corners, picturesque and quaint, folklore, sports, country harvest, historic festivals, travelogue views, an hour and a half full of colorful topics complementing the monumental presentation of arts in the Slovanic dances, the Czech songs, and the museum in the Czech castles, which was shown in the Sokol Hall in the preceding presentation. The second film of this coining evening will be a historical review in the 20th century settings of the famous Czech King George of Podebrady's proclamation issued at the end of the 14th century, for all nations to unite, settle their differences at a consultation meeting and abolish the ravages and suffering of wa r quite an interesting historical event.

The third film shown will be a travelogue dealing predominantly with the beautiful, many-steepled city of Prague. You will see the famous ancient beer hall U Fleku, the treasures at the picturesque Loretta church, views of the Zlata ulicka street in the backyard of the Hradcany Castle, where the al-

chemysts of middle ages tried to concoct the precious gold metal.

Don't miss this showing which continues — the same as the previous showings — this educational series of history and presents views of the cultural heritage of the Czech-speaking peoples of Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, and Slovakia, the ancestral home of the Czech-American pioneers.

The already well-known and much applauded Czech Folklore Dancing Ensemble is now enlarging its repertoire and in addition to the beautiful Folkloric Dance No. 1, which they now perform, will study the recently completed musical score of Brother Pech's "The Maypole Ribbon Dance," and the very fast and fiery finale, "Ze Slovace" — the middle Moravian region of colorful folklore costumes and traditions. Rehearsals will start shortly so the dances will be ready for next year's Concert Choral Society Bicentennial activities. Both the film series sponsored by Sokol and the Czech Folklore Dancing Ensemble are part of the Concert Choral Society's educational activity as a Czech Fine Arts presentation.

As the chairman of the Technical committee of our Concert Choral Society, I am also extending an official welcome invitation to all singers or associate members (non-singers) who would like to join or support this outstanding chorus. The repertoire under study is so beautiful -- the finest English choral music, including masterpieces of the monumental Czech choral arts treasury, many in American premiere performance.

I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who helped make the day the success that it was. The District Youth Counselors are always ready to help and encourage all of the youth to do their best. Many of the youth leaders and their assistants were on hand to do a good job at their assigned duties, and there were other people volunteering to take care of the many jobs that are required• on State Youth Achievement Day. I have followed, with much pleasure, the announcements of the clubs applauding the participants and winners of the various contests and activities of their club members. They justly have reason to be proud as we, their leaders, do.

Considered will be a charity project collectively sponsored. From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 79, CORPUS CHRISTI Dear Members, Glad to report that our last meeting which was held on September 12, 1975, at 7:30 p.m. was very well attended. Birthday gifts for the month were given to Geri lyn Sijansky, Nancy Sijansky, and Allen Klanika. We hope all of you had a happy birthday.

Under old business, we discussed our bowling party and everyone who went said that they had a good time.

A long discussion was held under new business about getting some new members into our meetings, so the first plan is: an invasion of the Corpus Christi Sokol Hall by GHOSTS and GOBLINS is being planned for October 10th, at 7:30 p.m. Come one, come all, in costume, to enjoy the night's activities with us. We will have refreshments, games and much, much more, so plan to attend and bring your friends.

LODGE NO. 13, DIME BON Dear Readers: The youth club held their regular monthly meeting on Sunday, September 21st, at 3 p.m. There were sixteen members and two adults present.

The members decided at this meeting to go to Bastrop State Park on the following Sunday for their September entertainment, they decided to have a hot dog dinner and then hike through the park.

This being the following Tuesday after the picnic, I want to say that everyone really enjoyed the day.

Mrs. Nimitz and myself didn't realize our age until we started hiking through the hills with the kids. It was a lot of fun though and I would advise those who haven't visited Bastrop State Park to do so. Dear Readers: The convention of the National Fraternal Congress began on September 20 in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the Netherland-Hilton Hotel. The Fraternal Spectacular was held the next afternoon in the "Hall of Mirrors" which occupies two floors of the hotel. Space does not permit giving a justifiable description, except to say that it was regal and stately with an oval balcony and an enormous, sparkling chandelier hanging from a transparent, domed ceiling. The grandeur of the spacious room was intensified by the red carpeting, gold and mirrored walls, and the marble pillars on either side of the stage.

A huge, draped mirror served as a backdrop.

The variety of the performers gave every indication that a great deal of thought and planning had been given to the program. The Czechoslovak Society of America Band, composed of approximately twenty young people from Berwyn, Illinois, presented numbers at various times during the afternoon.

Another group of five men came from Indiana and they played several good rag-time tunes on banjos. Two of the numbers were given by groups from Cincinnati.

One of these was the Cincinnati Pipe Band in full Scots' wardrobe and playing Scottish music on bagpipes and drums. Four young ladies with this group danced the Highland Fling and it was very apparent that the lassies had studied ballet from the way they pointed that toe. The next local group consisted of several young women, each dressed in a gown of a different color, who played delightful selections using bells of different tones. They represented the Lutheran Bell Choir. The last group came from Pittsburgh, Pa., and

Wednesday, October 8, 1975 they danced three Ukrainian numbers that slightly resembled our Czech folk dances. The costumes of the girls have blouses with full, long, embroidered sleeves, a loose vest, a rather straight skirt, and a floral headdress with several ribbon streamers. They all wore red knee-high boots. The fellows wore shirts with full, long sleeves, satin turquoise pants that looked like long bloomers, red cummerbunds at the waist, and red boots that came just above the ankles. They all were dance students, very colorful, and from a brief conversation with them, they travel as a troup.

To allow time for' costume changes, Carol and I danced three numbers at various times during the program. All of the various numbers on the program were enthusiastically received and it was a thrilling experience that we both shall long remember.

Needless to say, I could go on and on to tell about the trip, but due to limited space, I will report on that at another time.

Of course, this wonderful trip would never have happened except for the selection and generosity of the Supreme Lodge executives.

The membership of Lodge 130 had a fund-raising project and our youth club made a contribution to help defray some of the expenses.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY The undersigned member of the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge Jaromir No. 54, West, wishes to extend sincere sympathy, for the entire membership, to the bereaved family of our departed sister, MRS. FRANK (BENNIE) SOUKUP, age 70, who died in her home at West, on Tuesday, September 23, 1975.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in West with Rev. William Benish officiating. Interment followed in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Sister Soukup was born in Fayette County and had lived in the West area most of her life. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption and the Court 829. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, SPJST Lodge No. 54, West, and she served on the Resolution Committee until her death.

Her husband, Frank H. Soukup, preceded her in death on July 27, 1973.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Rose Verdegan of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; a brother, Irmocent Piscacek of Maryland; three sisters, Sister Adele of Austin, and Mrs. Walter (Olga) Hegar and Mrs. Emil (Marie) Hegar, both of West; five grandchildren; and several pieces and nephews.

age 81, of Route 3, Caldwell, died Monday, July 7, 1975, at the VA Hospital in Temple, after an extended illness for the past year.

Brother Schoenemann was born on October 14, 1893, at Mound Prairie (near Snook) in Burleson County, the son of the last Charlie and Frances Vajdak Schoenemann.

He was a World War I veteran serving in the United States Army for two years.

On September 27th, 1921, Brother Schoenemann married the former Vlasta Mais.

Brother •Schoenemann lived his entire life in Burleson County where he enjoyed several hobbies: hunting, fishing, and playing dominoes. For a number of years Brother Schoenemann worked at the Bryan Air Force Field. He was a retired farmer.

Legislative Reports Texans who believe government should be conducted at the local level whenever possible will want to support the proposed Constitution next November 4th.

Article Nine of the new Constitution, the local government provision, allows city and county governments to make many decisions which now involve the state legislature. Voter approval of many changes is also required, giving the individual Texan a greater say in how government is run.

Under the local government provision, counties can create additional offices or eliminate existing ones, but any changes have to be approved by a majority of the voters in the county. County commissioners, which now have no power to pass local laws, will also get ordinance-making authority if a majority of the voters approve it.

The local government article will establish Maximum tax rates for cities and counties, in addition to creating well-defined debt ceil-

ings for cities and counties, school districts and community colleges.

Before any special district could create new taxes or issue bonds, approval of local voters would be required.

The current 5,000 lower limit on home-rule cities would be lowered to 1,500 under the new Constitution, which will help our smaller cities gain more control over their local affairs.

Article Nine represents a significant step toward giving local governments control over local matters. In addition to giving citizens more influence over government decisions, the new Constitution will end the need for the legislature to spend its time working on matters which affect only one city or county. The result should be better government at all levels, with considerable savings in time and money for the state legislature.

Article Ten of the new Constitution deals with so-called "general provisions" and is largely a streamlined version of the material contained in our present Constitution. This section contains the protection against having homesteads seized in payments for debt. Also included in the new Article Ten are commitments for environmental protection, eliminating discrimination against handicapped Texans and establishing a health care system for all Texans.

The final section of the new Constitution, Article Eleven, outlines how the new Constitution may be modified if it is adopted by the voters. The most notable portion of this article is a clause which requires the voters to decide at least every 30 years whether to call a new Constitutional convention.

"Although any food may produce reactions in some individuals, the most common offenders are eggs, milk, wheat, corn, chocolate, potatoes, (fish, shellfish, tomatoes, and citrus fruit such as oranges, grapefruits or lemons," she said.

One cause of a food sensitivity may be eating too much of that particular item. This is why it's unwise to follow fad diets calling for an excess of any one food, Mrs. Sweeten reminded.

"And frequently people who 'just don't like' certain foods really may be allergic to them. Nature's protective effort may be misinterpreted as just a whim or fancy — such as the preschooler who refuses to drink his milk.

"Or a teenager may be fully aware that when he eats chocolate he has a reaction such as a stomach ache, headache or bad skin conditions.

"Any food giving mild symptoms should be placed on the suspect list," she said.

If family members seem sensitive to certain foods, the family physician or a specialist in allergic disease, can identify the exact allergies and prescribe the proper treatment, she noted.

Because nutritional needs of an allergic person are the same as anyone else's, physicians usually recommend a diet based on the Four Food Groups — but individually modified to the person's allergies.

"Remember to read prepared food labels carefully to see that the offending substance isn't contained. Foods causing an allergic reaction should be omitted," the specialist said.

For diets excluding wheat and milk, Mrs. Sweeten suggested these peanut butter cookies for snacking.

Peanut Butter Cookies 5 dozen cookies 1/2 cup shortening 1/2 cup peanut butter 1 cup brown sugar, packed 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 egg 3/4 cup soy flour 1/2 cup potato flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Food allergies can have several warning signals — and uses, Mrs. Mary K. Sweeten.a food and nutrition specialist, says.

Reactions such as headaches, nausea, swelling, itching or burning indicate a possible food allergy, she noted.

"These 'sensitivities' may occur because the food substance (called an allergen) contains some protein.

But some researchers believe that starches, fats and other chemicals

Grease baking sheets.

Beat peanut butter, sugar, vanilla and egg until creamy.

Mix flours, baking soda, and salt thoroughly. Add to creamy mixture and beat well.

Roll dough into balls, about 1 inch in diameter. Place about 2 inches apart on baking sheet.

Bake 15 minutes or until cookies are set, but not hard.

Brown Bread 5 loaves, about 10 slices each 11/2 cups soy flour 11/2 cups rye flour 1 cup cornmeal 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup raisins 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups buttermilk 1 cup mild molasses Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. (moderate).

Grease five 16-oz. fruit or vegetable cans.

Mix flours, cornmeal, and sugar.

Stir soda and salt into buttermilk. Add to flour mixture.

Mix in molasses.

Stir in raisins.

Pour about 1 cup batter into each can.

Bake 30 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean.

Remove from oven. Let stand 5 minutes. Remove bread from can.

Cool on wire rack.

Wrap tightly. Store overnight in refrigerator before serving. bPJSTCHOLESTEROL: HERO OR VILLAIN? Raymond Reiser is a Texas Agricultural Experiment Station biochemist who has established an international reputation as a result of his research on fats and other lipids.

The scientist, a distinguished professor in biochemistry and biophysics, has made basic contributions to the relation of diet to tissue fat of ruminant and non ruminant farm animals as well as man. His findings have led to improvements in practical rations and have ex-

22 plained basic biochemical phenomena. Some of these include chemical mechanisms of fat digestion, absorption, deposition and utilization.

Whatever it is, the consuming public is confused. They hear from one side that high cholesterol food will give everybody heart disease, or from the other side that the substance has no bearing on heart trouble.

One extreme, Reiser says, has caused many cholesterol-tolerant people to avoid such nutritious staples as eggs, meat, cheese and whole milk. As a result, the segments of agriculture that produce these commodities are unfairly penalized. The other extreme has lulled into false security those persons who run additional risk if they do not control cholesterol intake.

Confusion arises when such wellintentioned groups as the American Heart Association broadly indict cholesterol. The AH.A, Reiser said, urges national abstinence, or at least low intake of foods containing saturated fats and cholesterol.

At the other end is the egg industry, for example, which Reiser says is trying to convince consumers there is no real evidence that cholesterol in eggs will lead to heart ailments.

Somewhere in the middle is the consumer, overlooked as an individual and lost in a mass of generalizations on saturated and unsaturated fats and cholesterol.

Most people, the biochemist says, can handle diet cholesterol withcholesterol. Any excess that builds out pathological increase in blood cholesterol. Any excess that builds up after eating fatty food is passed off.

But there is a small percentage of people who are unable to tolerate high diet cholesterol levels.

Reiser suggests that these individuals are the ones who should be singled out and educated by medical societies.

It was an the basis of his research with fats that he wrote the Texas Feed Control Services standards for fat in feeds. These same guidelines were later adopted by the American Association of Feed Control Officials.

Reiser has demonstrated that fatty acid content of eggs reflects the hen's dietary fat, that cotton-

VESTNIK seed oil in a diet hardens animal fat, and that rumen bacteria can harden soft grass fat eaten by ruminant animals.

Among other studies now underway, Reiser and his large group of research scientists are unraveling the mystery of how animals make fat from carbohydrates, a process important in efficient meat animal production. Such fundamental studies are important to Texas agriculture when applied to practical animal husbandry.

Reiser's work bears greatly on marketing of beef and other animal products. Medical science believes that saturated (hard) fats found in animal products can contribute to high blood cholestrol and subsequent heart trouble. However, the Experiment Station biochemist is challenging that belief through his research.

He theorizes that mother's cholesterol-packed milk is needed by babies to help them tolerate cholesterol and stave off heart disease later in life. Perhaps, he says, there is a parallel between increasing incidence of coronary heart trouble in young adults today and the fact that a, high percentage of them sucked low cholesterol, storebought milk formulas when they were babies.

There is solid evidence that prenatal and postnatal nutrition in human babies influences brain and physical development. Early nutrition sets the pattern.

"Reasoning similarly, maybe cholesterol is necessary in the diet of human infants in order to control the development of enzyme systems needed for tolerance to plained.

Cholesterol, he says is an important part of animal and human tissues, especially in the nerves and brain, and is a chemical forerunner of many hormones and of some vitamins. Products of cholesterol metabolism are also necessary to fat digestion and absorption.

So is cholesterol a hero, a villain, or both?

Miss Taylor is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

She said the four life values are: —Agression or harmony.

"Alternate generations are characterized by predominant traits of aggression and harmony. Those generations who grew up in periods of unrest will try to ensure peaceful times for their children. Then, historically, agression often surfaces after years of harmony."

Children often relate better with their grandparents than with their parents on issues of agression and harmony. The youngsters respect the older people's knowledge and experiences about problems they are confronting, problems their grandparents dealt with years ago," she explained.

—Social order.

"Most children are, and usually remain, in their parents' social standing group."

—Time order.

"A person's behavior indicates the period of history in which he grew and developed. The things he likes and respects are associated with that time order which his parents 'gave' him by virtue of the time he was born."

One example is the Great Depression lifestyle — and its effect on the attitudes of those who grew up then. People who matured during this time tend to be more conservative and less wasteful, particularly with food and clothing, she noted.

"Those who grew up during the John F. Kennedy 'Camelot Years' will probably carry a greater appreciation for fine arts than those who are maturing during today's Back to Nature' years," she said.

—Quality of life.

"The newest generation's quality of life depends on the economic and social level associated with their parents.

"The quality of life parents experienced affects their expectations for their children. Parents continue to want their children to have opportunities they missed."
