FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK The District II fall meeting was held August 24th at the American Legion Hall in Taylor, with Lodge No, 29, Taylor, hosting the event. Attendance at their meetings continues to increase by holding informative and limited business. Their youth continue to maintain much enthusiasm in participation on the lodge and district levels. Swimming and miniature golf were their main activities and attracted a very good attendance for them to enjoy the benefits that the SPJST provides. The various questions asked at the meeting were pertaining to the attendance at lodge meetings to qualify a member to be a delegate. A lengthy question-and-answer session followed. Of course, the business session was to be brief, however, there is a reference that the Supreme Lodge, in their recommendations in changes to the by-laws prior to the 1972 convention, stated that in order for members to qualify to be elected as a delegate to the 1976 convention they must attend at least one-halt or (more than 1/2) of the local Age meetings for three years prior to the convention year (in this case 1973, 1974, and 1975). That recommendation was accepted in the convention and is now Article 4-d subsection 3 and reads as follows: "Attended a majority of the meetings during

EDUCATION Nothing in education is so astonishing as the amount of ignorance it accumulates in the form of inert fact. —Henry Adams * * What's a' your jargon o' your schools, Your Latin names for horns and stools; If honest Nature made you fools. —Burns * * Better build schoolrooms for "the boy," Than cells and gibbets for "the Man." —Eliza Cook each of the three years preceding the election of delegates to convention. New transferred members attended majority of meetings and the attendance record of the previous lodge shall be accepted." In answering questions, SL President Morris stated that (1) majority meant 7 out of 12 meetings, or 3 of 4 in case of quarterly meetings and that (2) if a lodge did not have enough eligible delegates, those eligible going to the convention would have the right to cast all the votes the lodge is entitled to. For instance, if a lodge is entitled to 10 delegates and only 2 members have attended a majority of the meetings in the three

years preceding the convention, then the 2 members would vote for the 10 delegates the lodge is entitled to. This article has its merits and also its faults. There are some fears that there will be a number of lodges which will have very few members who attend a majority of the meetings. After the recommendation in 1972 the Supreme Lodge comment read: "This would prevent a member from not attending and being active in lodge affairs for 3 years between conventions and then attending a majority of the meetings the 3rd year, thereby making himself eligible to be elected as a delegate. We will have to wait and see how this article affects our lodges, delegates, and convention; the article may have to be modified. The effects of this article could leave the decision making rights in too few of our membersthands. Our lodge officers are urged to be sure of the eligibility of their members so that questions would not arise in seating delegates as it has in the past. As we stated at the beginning, the meeting was nice and the day was enjoyed by all, we're sure. The day was a general day of fun for all of the youth, especially, and the songfest and dancing to Mr. Helmer Dahl's music were what the adults really enjoyed. The editor recommends that
