We promised, last issue, to bring you the Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth pictures, etc., and we are doing so in the Features section, as requested. The expressions of Brothers Nick Morris and Sid pokladnik, and pictures are included. Since writing a long editorial this late, after a month has passed, would be rather anticlimatic; we'll be brief.

Having no copy of Brother Jerry Milan's remarks, it should be stated that in some rather brief, appropriate remarks and statements he gave a very concise description of what they had in mind from the beginning of their planning of this endeavor to the culmination of the plans in a building being built—a building all of them could be proud of! From his so truly sincere and human, and somewhat interspersed with emotion remarks, one could sense that he and his fellow members and workers lived by the SPJST tenets of "Benevolence, Humanity, and Brotherhood" and the Sokol creed: "No personal gain — no personal glory." No where among any of those tired members on Saturday or Sunday, July 26th and 27th could you find anyone wanting personal, vain recognition. With a spirit of such "all for one and one for all," they cannot help but succee dThei best is wished for them, in deed!

NEWSBRIEFS Pavelka Reunion The annual Pavelka reunion will be held Sunday, August 31, 1975 at the Elk SPJST Lodge No. 35 Hall for the gathering of all descendants of Mary and Joseph Pavelka.

Each family is to bring enough food for themselves and their guests. Silverware, plates, napkins, cups and drinks will be furnished.

At night there will be a public dance featuring the Pavelka Orch. of Robstown. Everyone is cordially invited.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters: The August meeting was called to order by President Louis Harms at 7:30 p.m. on August 11, 1W75.

Brother Billy Burford presented the colors and led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

The minutes of the meeting for the month of July were read and approved by the membership.

Tribute was paid to these departed Brothers and Sisters: Bob Koudelka, Elmer Sattler, Helen Martinez, Pauline Kratina, and Carl Joe Pavalock.

Correspondence was acknowledged from the family of Helen Martinez.

Brothers Gary Ermis and Thomas Gabriel and Sisters Sophie Hruby and Mrs. Walters were reported on the sick list.

President Hanus reminded the membership that Czech Day, Sunday, October 26, is fast approaching and urged all members to wear their Czech costumes for that day.

Favorable financial reports were presented on behalf of the various committees.

Youth Leader Louise Knapiek reported on past and upcoming )youth activities and announced that the youth will present "The Womanless Wedding" on Sunday, September 14th.

For the Choral Group, Brother T. S. Kostom announced that the group performed at the opening of Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth on SUnday, July 27th.

Brother Karl Lindemann thanked the following members for their assistance during the clean-up held July 15th: Louis Hanus, A. L. Entertainment Committee Chairman Harley Cox announced the upcoming events at the lodge and encouraged the members to participate. In addition, Brother Cox thanked the members for their assistance during recent activities and also urged the cooperation of the members for Homecoming Day, Sunday, August 17th.

District Youth Counselor Marlene Caraway announced that State Youth Achievement Day will be held September 7th at Temple High School and State Royalty will be held Saturday, September 27th, at Lodge No. 80, Holland.

District Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska announced the top sales representatives for July as follows: Brother E. E. Cameron and Sisters Helen Hegwood and Agnes Lesak.

Historian Frances Olexa presented the members with an interesting and informative history of our lodge covering the years 1922 through 1924. In addition, Sister Olexa expressed her enjoyment of the Czech classes which were being taught at our lodge during the summer. Thirty-four students were enrolled and Sister Olexa urged the members to participate in the event the classes are sponsored next year.

At that time, an election was held to fill the vacancy on the Board of Trustees. Brother Eugene Barcak was elected to fill the vacancy. ' "Happy Birthday" was sung to the following members: Aggie Beard, James T. Kadlecek, Mickey Rice, Connie Ames, Dorothy W. Dixon, Marceil Malak, Edna Wehring, Margaret Migl, Chris Kucera, Jo Ann Bily, Diana Markuson, Marie Stayton, Betty Poston, Jerry Poston, Mary E. Sanderson, Robert Jaksch, Carl Jaksch, Rose Mikeska, Marie Saunders, Kathryn Mikeska, Carol Goedeke, Johnnie Hoffman, Shirley Mynar, Elmer S. Brother and Sister T. S. and Rosalee Kostom donated the refreshments following the meeting in honor of the birthday of President Hanus. The meeting adjourned at 9:10 p.m.

Fraternally, Frances E. Vala, Secretary LODGE NO. 48, BEYERSVILLE Dear Members, The Beyersville SPJST Lodge No. 48 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, August 10th at 3 p.m.

In the absence of our president and vice president, B. C. Stalmach called the meeting to order. The minutes were read and approved

by Sharon Beran. Ruth Wuensche gave her financial report on Insurance.

In new business we had a letter and a questionnaire from the University of Texas student doing a research paper on early dance halls. Richard Batla volunteered to fill out the form and return it to the young man.

We also received a letter from our District II secretary, Monica Pajestka, asking for donations for the fall District II meeting to be held at the American Legion Hall in Taylor at 2 p.m. Doris Wiesner made a motion that we send a donation and Olin Bier seconded the motion. Motion carried.

On September 7th the State Crafts YAD will be held at Temple High School. Betty Wiesner will have her poster there, which won first in District II. Leona Stalmach and Peggy filar gave us a report on the camp they both attended last month. They seemed to have had a very good time.

Our next meeting is scheduled Sunday, September 14th, at 3 p.m.

There was no more business and the meeting was adjourned.

Brother Tom and Sister Libbie Kolaja of Damon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 3rd. Many of their relatives and friends enjoyed this special occasion. Our best wishes go out to this fine couple.

On August 17th is a very special day for another couple of Lodge 81.. Brother and Sister John W. Kolaja are having their golden wedding anniversary. Their children and grandchildren are honoring them with an open house from 2 until 5 p.m. at the SPJST building.

Before the meeting came to a close, Brother and Sister Kolaja invited the members to come and enjoy this special day with them.

Refund checks were distributed and the door prize was won by Sister Vlasta Nowotny.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, September the 9th, at 7:30 p.m. Let us all be there.

AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP — Pictured, L. to R are Miss Annie Damhues, Mrs. Georgia Murphy, and Miss Cynthia (Cindy). Banik. Miss Damhues presented Sister Banik with an Adult Volunteer $200 Scholarship to the RN school at Baylor University. Cindy also received a $250 scholarship from the West Community Hospital to the Baylor School of Nursing.

LODGE NO. 81, NEEDVILLE Dear Members:and Friends: Our regular monthly meeting was held Tuesday, August 12th, at 7:30 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited by all members present. We all stood in silent tribute to 81s. Annie Schimara who passed away since our last meeting. Sister Schimara was in ill health for quite some time. She was a fine person and a good member. The membership wishes to extend sincere sympathy to her family on the loss )f their loved one.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Mary Werner and after a very minor correction they were approved as corrected. She also read a thankyou note from the family of Sister Annie Schimara.

Financial Secretary Ellene Zwahr and Treasurer Corlis Vallet gave their respective reports.

Gilbert Walzel, the Special Fund

treasurer, gave us a rundown on all the expenditures and income for each week throughout the month of July.

Brother Jerry Blinka was reported to be in the Gulf Coast Hospital in Wharton. We all wish him a speedy recovery. We want to extend our sincere sympathy to his wife, Dorothy, on the loss of her beloved mother.

The Auditing Committee: Jed Walzel, Willie May Kuykendall, and Milton Hartfield met July 15th for the purpose of auditing the books for our lodge. They found them in good order.

Now that we are having social nights every Wednesday, the Kitchen COmmittee is kindly asking for the following items that are needed: coffee, sugar, napkins, coffee mate and paper napkins. Of course, pastry is appreciated on these nights very much, also.

There was no new business.

LODGE NO. 161, JOURDANTON Dear Members: There will be a short business meeting at the Civic Center in Jourdanton on Sunday, Septemter 14th, at 11:30 a.m. After the meeting all members will then have a free barbecue plate at a cafe for dinner.

It was reported that our faithful Sister Sophie Hruby is ill in M. D. Anderson Hospital. We wish you a speedy recovery.

Sister Birdie Hilsher reported that all recipes for the cook book will have to be in by August 30th for us to have it printed and ready to sell on Czech Day. All you sisters get your good and tried recipes into the committee: Sisters Birdie Hilsher, Louise Knapick, and 2evelyn Milt°las. This cook book is going to be something real special and it will be an honor to have your recipes and name in this book. Put your name and lodge number on the recipe. Friends and other SPJST members are also invited to send their recipes to the committee. Also, in the back of the cook book you may have your name listed for $2.00. Example: Mr. and Mrs. John Doe, is considered one name, therefore it would cost you only $2.00 for you and your husband or the same price for just one name. Understand?

The hostesses for August luncheons were Sisters Evelyn Mikeska, Tillie Bily, Margaret Bohac, and Rose Horelica. Many thanks to you sisters for the delicious food. You did great and we enjoyed it.

Great news sisters! The Birthday Club voted to charter a bus or two for all Birthday Club sisters who would like to visit the SPJST Supreme Lodge and Museum in October. The committee consists of Sisters Frances Olexa, Rosalee Kostom and Sue High.

The prospective date is the third Wednesday in October -- the 15th.

Sisters who would like to go should attend the September Birthday Club meeting or contact one of the committee. This is a great opportunity for you to see the beautiful Home Office of the SPJST in Temple and the outstanding and unique museum. Now is the time to start planning for this great event.

Any of you sisters of Lodge 88 are more than welcome to join the Birthday Club at any time. I am sure that you will enjoy it.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Anne Green, Leddie Kadera, Rose Horelica, Jean Doerr, Mary Ellen Sanderson, and Frances Walla. All you good sisters are wished many more happy birthdays.

VESTNtK Sisters, let's all attend the regular monthly SPJST Lodge 88 meetings because President Louis Harms is always suggesting and planning something new and interesting for our great fraternal organization. If you do not attend these meetings, you are the loser.

SPECIAL NOTICE TO LODGE NO. 133, SAN ANTONIO September Meeting The September meeting will be held on the usual third Sunday, the 21st. All meetings start at 2 p.m. with refreshments and games after the meeting.

All members are reminded to please mark their calendars for the November meeting, Sunday, November 16th. This is our meeting where officers and delegates will be elected. The delegates will attend the 1976 SPJST Convention in Waco.

Fraternally, Emil E. Matula, Reporter - SPJST LODGE NO. 142, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters, Lodge Stefanik No. 142, held their monthly meeting on Friday, August 1, at 8 p.m. with Brother Stein presiding.

All present recited the pledge of allegiance to our flag. It was very nice to see so many members attending our meeting.

Sister Havran read the roll call of officers and it showed everyone was present. The minutes from the previous meeting were accepted as they were read. A motion was made and seconded that the minutes be approved.

Sister Rosie Turnis gave her financial secretary's report, which was followed by a treasurer's report by Sister Erline Janik. Brother Sidon Tumis gave a good local lodge treasurer's report.

A new member accepted into our lodge was Paul Edwin White.

Welcome to Lodge No. 142.

Our Sick Committee didn't have any one on its list. I think that's great.

There was no unfinished business.

Under new business we discussed selling 10 of our chairs that are in our storeroom. A motion was made and seconded that we sell these chairs. We also adopted some new rules about renting our hall.

We will not have a barbecue dinner in August, since our dates are all taken up. Brother Stein will help the youth club out with holding their meetings till January 1976, since we do not have a youth leader yet at the present time. I think we owe Brother Stein a big round of applause for really thinking so much about our youth. I know he will do a super job because he is a great fraternalist. Let's all try to give him our assistance in any way we can.

We had Brother and Sister Tom and Marlene Caraway, our District V Youth Counselor with us at our meeting. Sister Caraway gave an impressive talk about our youth.

We also had another visitor and he was Mr. Jochen, father of our vice president, Nelson Jochen. We were glad to have you all with us.

Our eight door prizes went to: Grace Kieschnick, Donald Kieschnick, Barbara Veselka, Frank Tumis, Erline Janik, Arthur Ftoehlich, Tom Caraway, and Emilie Hamala. Four of these door prizes were donated by Brother and Sister Sidon and Rosie Tumis.

Our next lodge meeting will be held on Friday, September 5th, at 8 p.m. We would feel very proud to have another good turnout of our members. With the Labor Day weekend coming up, we hope you all will be careful. Until next time.

Hope each one is improving and will soon be back among us.

New business. We discussed having a dance but for now we are waiting for more information.

Eleven members signed the book.

We had one visitor, Brother Lad Zatopek; he spoke briefly on insurance and was asked a few questions. We were glad to have him and do come again soon.

Our next meeting is September 10th at 8 o'clock; plan to attend.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters, Some more of our brothers and sisters have returned from vacations and what vacations! Mr. and Mrs. Ed Zalmanek returned from Las Vegas a few weeks ago and I understand that Mr. Z was fairly lucky. Also James and Willie Mae Woods just returned from two weeks in Albany, Oregon. I understand they had a great time.

Homecoming was a huge success, as always...From what I saw when I got there at 3:30, there was still a mob of people there. I missed the first half of the day, due to work. The Space City Dutchmen played very well and had everyone patting their feet and keeping time with the music.

Again, here's a quick review of some of the youth activities coming up at the lodge in the next few weeks. August 28th, at 6:30 p.m., a ceramic sho ► will be held in the youth room for the ceramic pieces that were painted this summer.

Piece* will be judged on two different categories: the kind of paint that was used, and the age group. The pieces will be judged by the public that goes in to see them, so be sure and drop in and see the children's handiwork and vote on the pieces. September 5th will be the Junior Back-to-School party and it will begin at 6:30 p.m. Also on September 13th the youth will meet at the lodge at 7 p.m. for a hayride; and on September 7th, a really big day — State Youth Achievement Day for

crafts, talent, and Beseda, held again this year in Temple, at the high school. There will be a bus of 25 first-place winners and five chaperones going from District V. For the Friday night, August 8th Nick Navarro dance, these two people had birthdays: Bob Libbens and Cecil Hodkins, and Oscar and Tillie Helmcamp celebrated 37 years of wedding bliss together.

For the Saturday night, August 9th dance those having birthdays were: Franklin (no last name given), George Kruse, George Krenek, Lad Roznovsky, Ann Odstrcil, Ann Green and Doug Fletcher. These folks celebrated anniversaries: Mr. and Mrs. John Brezina, 25 years; Jack and Sally Collier, one year; David and Willie May Majiewski, 23 years; and Herb and Linda Jozwiak, 10 months. Jerome Walkoviak is in intensive care at Heights Hospital. His visitors are limited but do stop by and cheer him up. Gary Ermis is home from the hospital after his second corrective surgery and is doing fine. By the time you read this Seth Duncan should be home from the hospital and doing okay.

Also Steven Strouhal is home from the hospital and recuperating! nicely.

We had one member to pass away and that was Albin, Poenitzsch. We will miss our departed sister and our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends.

The first regular meeting was held on the second Sunday in October, at the home of Brother Vaclav Becan, 2218 Ellis Ave. Subsequent meetings were held in the homes of different members on the second Sunday of each month.

This is the beginning, as I remember it, being the last male charter member of the lodge established 64 years ago. The other living charter member is Sister Anna Paprskar, widow of Frank Paprskar, who helped so much to organize this lodge.

ANNOUNCES CZECH DAY AT THE STATE FAIR The Czech Cultural Society, an organization made up of representatives of the various fraternals and organizations of Czech-Moravian people• in Texas, has announced that the 35th AmericanCzech Day at the State Fair of Texas will be Sunday, October 12th.

Under the leadership of Mr. Bob Oates, the committee is hard at work preparing the program and events for the day with activities scheduled at the Coliseum, Hall of State, Mobil Stage, and Band Shell.

The day promises to be one of beautiful costumes, choral singing, lively CZech band music, gymnastics, folk dancing, and plenty of food and drink with the Dallas ladies preparing lots of mouthwatering strudel.

The committee is working hard to make this a day to remember but it will be successful only if you plan to attend, so mark October 12th on your calendar for the 35th Czech Day celebration at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.

Some of the other members of the Supreme Lodge and their spouses were not able to be with us here today, but send their greetings and congratulations.

We also have some other individuals who hold prominent positions in the SPJST: Vestnik Editor Rudy Sefcik and wife Maxine; State Field Manager Silas Smith and Jeanette Smith; District III Sales Representative Alvin Nesuda, and his wife, Wilma, who is the District III Youth Counselor; District III President Brother Johnnie Gaidusek and Sister Gaidusek; and our SPJST Museum Curator, Librarian, and Archivist, Brother Otto Hanus and Sister Hanus.

Climaxing several months of planning, lodge meetings and discussions, SPJST Lodge 154 held official ground-breaking ceremonies for their new lodge home on March 2nd, 1975. The ceremonies, at this very location, were attended by lodge officers and members, the planning or building committee, architect Harry Allison, and long-time lodge members Brothers Anton Tirk, Fred Merlik, and Sisters Anna Milan and Frances •Tirk. The Supreme Lodge was represented by Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris, Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and District III Director Brother Sid Pokladnik.

District III Sales Representative Brother Alvin Nesuda and District Youth Counselor Wilma Nesuda were also present. The president of the Southern District of the American Sokol Organization was represented by Vice President Don Steinman, Sr. Approximately 100 persons 'attended the ceremonies, including 30-40 children. After the ground-breaking ceremonies, a brief social was held at the old Sokol Hall on McCandless with cold cuts and refreshments prepared and served by the ladies of Lodge 154. The day was a bit blustery and cool, as those attending will recall, but it was clear and otherwise favorable.

Construction of the new edifice started January 27th, 1975, with a building contract awarded to the Terrill Construction Company of Fort Worth. About that time the completion target date was set for July 1975, and that date has been met.

This new building contains 12,000 sq. ft. and is of contemporary or modern pre-cast structural concrete construction. The building consists of a gym area 80 ft. x 100 ft., club-kitchen area 26 ft. x 72 ft., and a lobby and conference room 26 ft. by 58 ft. This new home of Lodge 154 is located in the northwest section of Fort Worth in what is considered to be a very desirable area. The front entrance faces west and Boat Club Road (also FM 1220) and is near the northwest campus of Tarrant County junior College, and near Eagle Mountain

The fact that SPJST Lodge 154 and Sokol Fort Worth would some day outgrow their present facilities at the corner of McCandless and Northwest 28th Street has been on the minds of the membership of both organizations for a number of years. An application was made for a loan to the Supreme Lodge on November 11th, 1974. As Lodge President Jerry Milan put it at the ground-breaking ceremonies: "The completion of this new building is a fulfillment of a promise and heritage to the coming generation that theirs will be a future full of opportunity to develop into our leaders of tomorrow. Many lodge members have put in countless hours of tireless work and efforts in seeing that this building became a reality. The philosophy of such efforts was put very appropriately by lodge reporter Sister Mary Pavey on the occasion of their ground-breaking when she said, "All of this has been done for the satisfaction we get out of it."

The officers of SPJST Lodge No. 154 are Pcesident Jerry Milan, Vice President James W. Mason, Secretary Mary Renfro, Treasurer Mary Hale, Financial Secretary Anna Milan, Youth Leader Donna Parker, and Assistant Youth Leader Mrs. Wanda Mason. The lodge membership stands at 1,226 and there is every indication that this will increase sizably in the months and years to come. (You will be hearing from President Jerry Milan in a. few moments and he, in turn, will introduce his fellow lodge officers and other visiting digni-

Tributes To The Living. I have always felt that whenever possible, tribute should be paid to the living, and we have a special tribute that we wish to pay today to one of the dear, faithful and long-time members of Lodge 154. This person's contributions are outstanding and unique.

Sister Anna Milan was District Sales Champion of District III for several years. Since she started writing members and insurance for the SPJST and Lodge 154 in 1938, the date our records go back to, she has solicited a total of 1,904 members representing a total amount of $3,605,000 in life insurance. She worked with Brother Joe Hejny when he was in charge of sales for the northern half of the state and as vice president, later with District Organizer Arnold Vrla, and currently with DSR Alvin Nesuda. (She started soliciting members into the SPJST in 1932). In addition, she has written an application for membership for 144 consecutive months.

From the information you have just heard, you can see that "Mama Milan's" track record with the SPJST is quite impressive and all of us salute her here today publicly. Sister Milan has been, through all these years, the "maternal mascot" — matriarch, if you please, of the lodge and its hopes and aspirations. She has stood as a bulwark of hope and trust in the future for everything that has been accomplished here at 154. In large measure, this building stands as a monument to her loyalty and efforts. She has been with the SPJST for many years. She has won every district and state sales award available.

She is a grand woman. She is a wonderful lady. Je to velmi hocinS a dobr‘ dae. I think I can honestly say, and those who know her will agree, that she has not had an evil thought or committed an evil deed in her entire life. She has lived an exemplary life and she and her late husband raised a won-

Those who know her family can attest to this fact. God bless her! We all love you, Sister Milan! (Sister Milan was given a sustained standing ovation).

There is one other individual, however, that needs to be mentioned today and who played a very vital role in Sister Milan's work with and in the SPJST. Many of you here recall the many district meetings and "organizers' luncheons," as they were called in those days, at which Sister Milan received sales award after award, both on the district and state levels. You will also recall that when she received her awards, recognition was always given to her late dear husband and partner, Brother Joe Milan. (I see that his picture appears on the back cover of your program brochure).

Many of us recall that when his name was mentioned on these occasions, his standard and familiar remark was "I didn't do anything; I Was just the chauffeur."

That statement always drew chuckles and a round of applause. So Brother Joe Milan must also be paid tribute on this occasion, even though he is no longer with us.

Let me state here that we in SPJST respect and revere the past, but we don't live in it We respect and appreciate what those who have gone on before us have created and built, but at the same time, we practice and preach the credo that the mantle of leadership is passed to the younger generation with a definite purpose — that of carrying on and perpetuating that which was inherited. Brother Jerry Milan is an outstanding example of this philosophy. Jerry is a modest young man and he would be the last person on earth to want to take credit, publicly or otherwise, for his achievements, but I happen to know for a fact, and many other people know it, that he was the principal and inspirational force behind making this new edifice a reality, so Brother Jerry, this building also stands in tribute to you and your fellow workers in Lodge 154. You can wear the mantle proudly and let the entire SPJST stand in appreciation of

VESTNIK what has been accomplished here.

Finally, I would like to say that Lodge 154, as you can all see by the programs in your possession, has an afternoon chock full of diverse and interesting entertainment for both young and old today, and also a full day's entertainment tomorrow, Sunday. A lot of work, preparation and planning has gone into bringing this entertainment to you by many people here in Lodge 154. And now, back to your very cornpetent Mistress of Ceremonies, Sister Donna Rose Parker .. . * * Post-Opening Observations. — From all reports, the openingcelebration events on Sunday were attended by large numbers of friends and well-wishers. It has to be said that the three-night and two-day celebration was a huge success. I asked one of the workers what she thought might have been lacking through it all. Very appro■priately, she answered, "sleep!"

She was speaking for many people, After Brother Pokladnik's remarks, Sister Parker called on Lodge 154 President Brother Jerry Milan, who introduced many of his co-workers, dignitaries and guests. As he did so, one could sense the sincere empathy the entire audience felt for him when he displayed some very genuine many and human emotions. He was entitled to it. No one could possibly fault him for it — it was too genuine, especially when he paid tribute to his fellow members on the Planning Committee and certainly when he concluded his remarks with: We owe it to the coming generation; we can, we will, we must, and by golly we did!

HI Director Sid Pokladnik BROTHER POKLADNIK'S REMARKS Mistress of ceremonies Sister Donna Parker, Honorable Judge ,Spurlock, ofificers and directors of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, officers of neighboring lodges and Societies, honored guests, my sisters and brothers: It is a great honor and privilege to be asked to be present at this grand opening ceremony of your new and beautiful lodge home in this great community of Tarrant County.

At a gathering and celebration of this type many thoughts come to a person's mind . . . especially thoughts of the past and of our great heritage.

Many years before the turn of the century . . . your forefathers and mine immigrated from what is today called Czechoslovakia and settled in many parts of Texas, to make this their new homeland.

Many of these newcomers joined a Czech Fraternal Society, today called SPJST or Slavorde Benevolent Order of the State of Texas; and the Association known as Sokol. Today we have several SPJST lodges and Sokol in the same building and each carrying out their obligation to their respective membership . . . SPJST for Fraternal Benefits and Sokol for Physical Fitness.

The progress of our Society has been truly amazing. As of December 1, 1897, we had 25 lodges with a membership of 875. Today we have 1301 lodges with a membership of 50,000 and $90,000,000 of insurance in force and over 21 million in assets. The Home Office is located in Temple.

Griffin. its fraternal services into many fields. A few of which I would like to mention are our homes for the aged, our high school and university scholarship program, our physical fitness support . . and our statewide youth program, and many other fraternal activities on local, district, and statewide levels.

This edifice is a great monument to our forefathers .. those great men who had the foresight and the courage to pioneer our way for us. It is becquse of them . . . that we today cab have true fraternal fellowship and association with our families and neighbors.

It is that type of courage and foresight that built this great community and made a strong city and state. This is what we must never lose. Each of you should stand erect and say with pride .. this is my lodge.

Your lodge is blessed with outstanding leadership . . . in your (president, Brother Jerry Milan, and his fellow officers you have a great team . . . fully supported by all the committees and the general membership.

I am confident of the continued future success of Lodge 154. Remember, this edifice belongs to every member of Lodge 154. and every member is important.

Finally, a meeting was arranged to view the curtain which was painted in 1904 by F. S--sta. Surprisingly, the curtain was in very good condition. The curtain was purchased and Brother Jerry Milan, with sons Rome and Tal, carefully disassembled the curtain and loaded it for the trip to Fort Worth. It was a sad occasion to see it come down from the place where it had hung for 71 years, but knowing it would be restored and preserved for years to come seemed to justify the move.

Now the 12' by 15' framed painting hangs on the west wall of the main ballroom of the new home of Lodge Mb, 154, Fort Worth. It will be viewed by all as a tribute to those Czech pioneers who stood strong and endured the years so that we might live protected in Brotherhood and enjoy a wholesome and free democratic way of life.

CZECH STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS IN AUSTIN — 1975-76 A report from the Slavic Department at the UT on courses of Czech for everyone interested in learning or promoting the Czech language and culture: Enroll in the Czech language courses at the UT if you want 1) to further your Slavic studies, 2) to fulfill your BA language requirement, 3) to acquire a practical knowledge of Czech only, and 4) to brush up on your Texas Czech.

Offered are the following courses: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year Czech or a Beginner's course, an Intermediate course, and an Advance course (mainly in composition and translation). In each of the three courses Czech conversation is emphasized.

Another bright new course may be organized if the attendance shows sufficient. This course is planned specially for anyone who speaks and understands Czech, but wants to brush up on it and acquire a skill in writing correctly and translating. Attention will

DATA PROCESSING AWARD — Miss Pat Technik, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Technik of Shiner, is pictured with the award presented to her from M. E. George, Director of Sanford-Brown College, St. Ann, Missouri. Miss Technik is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, College Level, and participated in Missouri's state-wide competition in Jefferson City, Mo. Pat received the first place trophy in data processing. This qualifies her to participate in nationwide competition at Miami Beach, Florida. Pat will graduate from Sanford-Brown College with an Associate Degree in Computer Science in September, 19'75. (Pat and her family are all members of Lodge No. 184, Moulton.

—Editor). be paid to the Moravian Czech as spoken in Texas, and the use of Czech-English and English-Czech dictionary will be practiced. This course will be scheduled one evening per week and all interested in enrolling should refer to it as the Czech Evening Cburse.

A correspondence course in Czech language for the beginners will be given as usual through the UT Extension Division (Extension Division and Field Bureau, Slavic Dept, Correspondence Section, Austin, Texas 78712).

To complement their class study, all students of Czech are encouraged to use the Linguistic Laboratory of the UT and listen to the magnetic tapes featuring Czech pronunciation and conversation, all texts from the Grammar book used in clagses, as well as fragments from Czech literature, both poetry'" and prose. This helps the student to grasp the intonation of the conversational Czech faster, as well as of the spoken Czech oriented toward performance.

The courses offered by the Slavic Department at the UT of Czech language, Czech literature and folklore, Slavic Linguistics and Dialectology, may be combined with the program of studies in the Department of Linguistics, History, Government, Economics, Fine Arts, and others, especially in relation to the program of the East European Studies Committee at the U of T. The Slavic. Department at UT offers a BA degree in Czech. The candidates of MA and PhD degrees may choose language, Czech literature and Czech folklore as minor or major in combination with Russian. (The PhD programs are offered through the Departments of Comparative Literature and Linguistics).

This year, courses are taught by Prof. Karla Trnka and Mr. Josef Rostinsky, instructor, both native Czechs and each holding an academic degree from the University of Prague and Brno, respectively, in Czechoslovakia. (Mr. ROOtinsky is substituting in the Ian-

16 guage course for Svatava Pirkova Jakobson. Prof. Jakobson obtained a leave of absence from the University and her courses in Czech literature and folklore are omitted this year. She assumed a position as folklore advisor with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., related to the Bicentennial Celebrations, specifically, the Folklife Festival in Washington in the summer of 1975).

Mrs. Edith Taborsky is teaching the correspondence course in Czech.

All students interested in the Czech language and culture are welcome to become members of the Czech Club at the U of T, and join its social and cultural activities. They will see the pictures and films brought by our students who studied at the Prague Summer School and traveled in Czechoslovakia; take part in the CZech conversational session at Schultre's Garden; enjoy the kolache parties; sing the Czech folksongs and the Christmas carols; dance the polkas and waltzes to the sound of the Texas-Moravian bands; and participate in the annual spring meeting of the Texas students and teachers of Czech in Taylor, which features, among others, the traditional Texas-Moravian dance entertainment.

After a wedding trip to Mexico, the couple is at home at Sunsine Road, Holland.

Both families are 100 percent members of Lodge 80, Holland.

Monica and David were very active in the youth club and continue to be very active. Presently, David serves Lodge 80 as president, while Monica serves as District II secretary.

We believe this is the first time a lodge president has married a District II secretary.

RECEIVES MASTER'S DEGREE The Master of Education degree was conferred Saturday, August 16th upon Brother W. Joseph Janca at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.

Brother Janes, also completed a certification for an administrative certificate, and is employed as an assistant principal at Post Elementary School in the Cypress-Fairbanks school district in Houston.

A past executive director of National Phi Kappa Theta fraternity in Worcester, Mass., Brother Janca was an honor guest at a national convention held in New Orleans, La., August 16. He was named on the executive board of the National Phi Kappa Theta.

He is the son of Sister Bessie Franek of Rosenberg, and is a member of Lodge No. 175, Fort Bend.

(No admission charge) — SPJST — STATE YAD SUNDAY, SEPT. 7, 1975 TO: All Concerned This year's State Youth Achievement Day (Talent, Arts and Craft, Beseda) promises to be another big day and milestone in the history of the Youth Department of the SPJST. It should also be one of the best we have ever had.

If you are a contestant in anything, be sure that you register in time or are itiline before registration is over. We are allowing more time for registration this year, but your cooperation is necessary because/the people in charge of registration must then move on to other jobs. (The schedule for this day follows this report).

Please do not put your craft in the display area until after you register. The lobby for the display is rather spacious where you will be able to wait with your craft until you are able to register. If you have a large craft or several crafts to enter, get your relatives or friends to help you ahead of time. We will again have large Signs designating the various craft areas.

Contestants in talent are asked to announce their own selections, but not their names, lodges, or districts. Remember that microphones will not hurt you so step right up so that you can be heard.

If possible, get your youth club posters to your DYC or get them to the YAD during registration time.

Traveling north or south, take the Temple (or Adams St.) exit and go north at the first traffic light, which is 31st Street. The building is a large modern brick structure, very prominent and easy to find. There is a huge parking lot adjoining.

There are motels in the Temple area offering nice accommodations if you plan to stay overnight either before or after the State YAD.

CAMP ALLOCATIONS — 1975

Dear Members: We thought we would let you know in this report how we distributed the money for camps this year. Without going into all the details, you will recall that we have used two or three different formulas in the past in distributing this money.

Keep in mind that the total amount available for camping, as approved in the last convention, is the annual net gain from the investment of $300,000. This year we feel that we have the most equitable and fairest formula used thus far because it is based on actual attendance at camp over the last three years and on campers who were actually and physically attending this year. We have

used the formula of disbursing 80 percent to any given district on the average 3-year attendance and 20 percent based on this year's campers attending camp. This new allocation formula was approved by the Supreme Lodge. We feel this is more equitable because in the past some of the districts had considerable funds left over, whereas this year the money was actually used for the purpose for which it was intended — campers attending camp.

The accompanying table shows the breakdown per district as explained above. We might add that this year's camps were unusually good and enjoyed by everyone, especially our young people. We feel these allocations have been fair and adequate and it seems that this system met with the ap-

20 proval by everyone concerned.

Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Members and Friends: The youth club held their last club meeting Sunday, August 17 at 3 p.m. There were 26 members (rather hobos), one visitor and five adults, present.

Our youth club decided to have another refreshment stand at the Firemen's Picnic provided the firemen did not object.

Mrs. Olga Nimitz, our assistant youth leader, gave a very impressive talk on what is expected of our youth today.

After the meeting, the kids had a hobo party. Winners in the worst dressed hobo contest went to: Judy Marek, 1st; Robert Spacek, 2nd; Keith Kubena, 3rd.

I want to thank the judges Mrs. Jim Bayer, Mrs. Arno Zwerneman and Mrs. Werner Jatzlau. I know their decisions were not easy for the kids hvl gone all out to see who could be the worst dressed.

It was a lot of fun and if you kids had fun, pass the word of encouragement to more youth to attend the next meeting.

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS

Dear Readers, Our last meeting was held Wednesday, August 13th. We discussed how we are going to raise some money, to build a trophy case. First of all, we decided to make things in the kitchen to sell during our games on Sundays.

We really didn't discuss it that much, but we will at the next meeting.

On Thursday, August 7th, the youth club went swimming at the Tyrs Pool at the Sokol Center. We then went back to our lodge and had watermelon. All of us had a very good time.

On August 28th we held our swimming party and we were allowed to bring a guest.

LODGE NO. 66, WACO

Dear Readers, Our last monthly meeting was held on Sunday, August 10th. We discussed having a Back-to-School party in the month of August. The youth would be able to swim and there would also be a watermelon cut. This party would be at the Mazanec farm.

After the August lodge meeting everyone enjoyed a supper, followed by a dance. Harold Strand and his band will entertain.

On Saturday, August 2nd, our youth club went to Six Flags. We had a very big attendance and everyone had a great time.

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Members, On August the 18th our junior youth club held its monthly meeting. Janet Pokladnik called our meeting to order and Michelle Conner led us in the pledge of allegiance.

The president of our mother lodge, Brother Paul' Hagar, installed our officers. We voted to have a speaker at our next meeting. On Sunday, August 24th, our youth club is going to Seven Seas.

After our meeting, we had a birthday party for Joe Prachyl, Janet Pokladnik and Larry Sadecky. We also practiced for State YAD, and Beseda for the fair.

At the meeting there were 27 members present.

Our youth leader, Mrs. Spacek, asked Mrs. Nimitz to speak to us.

After the meeting, the youth club had a ho-bo party. We also played games.

There were three judges and they were: Mns. Jatzlau, Mrs. Zwerneman and Mrs. Bayer.

The judges picked the first three worst dressed hobos. First place went to Judy Marek, second place to Robert Spacek, and third to Keith Kubena.

There were sandwiches, potato chips, and sodawater.

Our next meeting will be held September 21st. We would like all to attend.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our lodge brother, W. GUY DRAPER, who passed away Wednesday, August 13, 1975, in Scott and White Hospital.

W. Guy Draper was a long-time Temple financial, civic, and religious leader, a well-known banker in Texas and was a leader in community and state organizations.

Mr. Draper was honored January 18, 1972, in Temple as his special day for his service to the Temple area.

He began his banking career in the First National Bank in Oglesby in 1920, was president and chairman of the board of the First National Bank of Temple. He had previously been president and chairman of the board of six other banks, including banks in Oiglesby, McGregor and Killeerf, People's National Bank of Belton and Fort Hood National Bank.

Mr. Draper was a native of Coryell County and previously served two terms as mayor of Temple.

He was a trustee at Baylor University, Mary Hardin-Baylor College and Howard-Payne College.

He was a life-time governor on Scott and White Hospital Board of Trustees, a director of the Temple -Industrial Foundation, which he helped form, and most recently served as a director of Texas. Power & Light Co. of Dallas.

Mr. Draper was also a former president of the Temple Chamber of Commerce and Temple and McGregor Rotary Clubs.

In 1975, Mr. and Mrs. Draper

VESTNIK donated one million •dollars to Baylor University to aid in the financing of a new academic complex on the Baylor campus.

Mr. Draper's interest in banking was displayed in his leadership positions in several organizations.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Temple, was chairman of its board of deacons and taught a Bible class.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. August 15th in the First Baptist Church of Temple with the Rev. Grady Metcalf and Rev. Ed Stewart officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery under the direction of Harper-Talasek Funeral Home.

Survivors are his widow, Mrs. W. Guy Draper; a brother, Claxton Draper of Austin, five sisters, Mrs. W. S. Garnett and Mrs. Aubrey Davidson, both of Mound, Mrs. Quince Davidson of Odessa, Mrs. Clyde Childress of Abilene, and Mrs. Ross Kinslow of Temple.

Mr. Draper had been a member of SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple, since 1940.
