FROM THE EDITORS DESK It has been repeated over and over by adult leaders to the youth of our Society that you should never give up trying for another opportunity when challenging someone in a contest. This, of course, was the scene at District I Youth Achievement Day which was held July 6th at the KC Hall in Brenham, where its facilities were comfortable to accommodate a youthful event such as the large group of boys and girls ranging from 6 through 17 years of age, from six District One lodges, to take part again in their endeavors, some for the last try because of age limitation. Upon our arrival, we were surprised by a large turnout, in fact, one of the largest in the youth activities' existence in District I. The arts and crafts department was nicely arranged, in its category of ages, for the judges to carefully select the best entries for state competition. Even the talent entries had a rich variety of performances, plus the royalty competition had its best candidates in number as well as in their knowledgable presentation of public speaking. This type of opportunity enables any young man or woman to gain stronger encouragement for a better outlook' on life in the future and it also helps overcome some disappointments. A humerous person can add much attraction to the evening by making the event an enjoyable one. This time we must give credit to Emil Kocurek (Randy Reets) who so capably kept the audience entertained with his humerous remarks. We would like to congratulate all who participated and say . that we certainly do appreciate the hospitality of Lodge No. 169, Brenham for their efforts and enthusiasm. District I, keep up the good work!
In District II, July 13th, at Lodge No. 24, Cyclone (Flag Hall), another enthusiastic gathering had arrived to witness their District TI YAD competition in all categories. And again, admittedly, it was better than in previous years. In attending six district YADs of our SPJST this year, thus far, it can be definitely stated that they have been better attended and have more participation than ever before. That was also evident in District II at Lodge 24. Our district youth counselors (DYCs) and youth leaders (YLs), plus parents, are to be commended for their interest in our youth. From a personal standpoint, it can be stated that our adult members who work with our youth, as they are growing up, are to be valued very highly and definitely deserve every bit of credit and appreciation cast in their direction. Their reward, indeed, is generally only the expression of our appreciation of their efforts. If we only pause All of us, long enough to realize how many mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts and uncles, etc., these youth days attract and induce to come out, to our lodges, we would worry a little less about what our youth program is costing us. Brother Frank Olexa used to say that we had lost a complete generation of our youth by ignoring them. It
