The pictures appear in this issue. * * Again, the editorial comments will be rather brief due to lack of space, and the Czech section will be rather short because we were deluged with copy again this week.

That's fine, we are glad to have it.

The only problem is where to put it and what to leave out. We will catch up in a few weeks and we ask the understanding of all our correspondents and readers. All necessary letters and articles that contain material that must be published this week have been included if at all possible. We couldn't get all of VP Joe B. Hejny's statistics in this time, but we have included the most important, and he says he is going to send in additional reports next week. Some of the youth letters and Necrology must be held for later publication.

We're sorry we can't print everything this week, but it just can't be done. * * Friday, July 4th, we decided to accept the invitation of Sister Dorothy Banik, member of the Entertainment Committee, and others, of Lodge No. 35, Elk, and visit them on that date of the honoring our Declaration of Independence

They honored all their past youth enthusiasts, namely the youth leaders, assistant youth leaders, and the various contestants in present and past activities.

Here we would like to say that much could and should be written about the spirit and family atmosphere of this friendly Lodge No. 35, Elk, but space will not permit at this time, but we do have some pictures of the event that possibly may be included this week. * * Sunday, July 6th was District I YAD at Lodge go. 169 Brenham and Sunday, July 13th was District II YAD at Lodge No. 24, Cyclone.

We will report on these in coming issues. * * Remember that this July 27th weekend the following events are taking place: Grand Opening of Eagle Mountain Athletic Center in Port Worth.

Lodge No. 13 Dime Box's annual picnic in Dime Box. (Their grand opening is set for October 26th). * * Your attention is called to the semi-annual report of the Board of Directors of our SPJST, beginning on page 4 of this issue. The double column report concerns the income and disbursements of the Society. The single column report sets forth some of the thoughts of the district directors and is signed for all of them by District I Director John A. Kubena.

First, they review the SPJST Youth Program and we are gratified to note that they deem it necessary to continue the program.

It certainly has proven beneficial for our Society thus far!

Next is a review of the cost of our SPJST Vestnik. These costs and expenses are itemized and are very similar to an itemized costs report of the Vestnik submitted to the Publication Committee by SL President Morris prior to their last PC meeting. The cost of our Vestnik, of course, is only one of the many expenses our Society must deal with. Everything costs more today, so naturally, the directors should examine, every phase of the Society's operations.

However, I have attended five SPJST Conventions (1948 to 1964 inclusive) and it seems that the

membership realizes that the Vestnik is one of the great benefits of being a part of this fraternal family. The costs must be anallzed in light of the results gained.

Furthermore, delegates at some of these conventions, in answer to questions, were told that the cost of the Vestnik was included in our scale of mortuary rates charged to our members by actuarial process.

If memory serves correctly, it was figured at $2.50 per $1,000 of insurance. This may or may not still be the case. Anyway, our SPJST is more than sound in solvency, and, as long as our membership enjoys receiving their weekly Vestnik, it would seem they are entitled to it. It, like the Youth Program may cost our Society, but both do bring valuable returns to our SPJST.

iiEWSBRIEFS Mrs. Fred Kveton, age 78, passed 'away in the Hi-Plains Nursing Home at Hale Center on Wednesday, July 9, 1975 after an extended illness. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 11, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Isidore's Catholic Church at Abernathy. She was born in Koprivnice, Czechoslovakia on September 6, 1896; harried Fred Kveton on December 27, 1921, Surviving are her husband; 3 daughters; 3 sons and 16 grandchildren. * * Hodanek-Valenta-Vrana Reunion The Hodanek, Valenta, and Vrana reunion will be held on the 27th of July at Shiner between Moulton and Shiner at the Sulphur Park. We urge everyone to attend. * * Vitek Reunion The Vitek family reunion will be held on Sunday, August 10, 1975, at Seaton Star Hall, Seaton. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Each family is asked to bring a basket lunch - two meals. Plates, napkins, forks, cups, tea, coffee and ice will be furnished. * * Ondrasek-Surovik Reunion The Ondrasek-Surovik reunion will be held on August 10, 1975 at the Snook SPJST lodge in Snook.

In the first six months of 1975, our insurance sales were the highest of any previous six-month period. There were 1,893 policies written on an average of $3,541 per policy.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Our lodge meeting was held on Thursday, July 10, 1975 at 8 p.m., with Lodge President Brother Jerry Pechal presiding. Flag Bearers James Allen and Stephen Morris led the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

Everyone was welcomed to the meeting and these visitors — Sisters Ann Balusek and Barbara Bryant and Brothers Johnny Jakubec and Victor Cervenka. Come again because you are always welcome.

Sister Lillian Kosarek called the roll. All officers were present and most of the sales representatives.

The minutes of the last meeting were approved as read. The only correspondence was the receipt of the mortuary dues from the Supreme Lodge.

Sister Kosarek stated that getwell cards had been sent to the following: Brothers Johnie L. Vann icek, David Sefcik, Ed Skrabanek and Edwin Kohntek and Sisters Alice Banning and Anna Raska. If anyone is hospitalized and we do not know about this, we cannot send them a get-well card. Let either the lodge secretary or one of the reporters know' and we can pass it on to the secretary and she will send a card to the member who is hospitalized. Best wishes for recovery to all who are ill.

We accepted the following as new members: Clayton Jim Pick and Leo Albert Baca, both adults; and Jeffrey Ryan Fischer, a juvenile. We welcome you and hope the sales representatives secure some more new members next month.

Reports were given by the various chairmen, officers and the Audit Committee chairman, Brother Leon Sodek, gave the quarterly report. There will be a vacancy for bar chairman beginning with the month of August. The board

Our four door prizes went to: Emilie Hamala, Rita Hermis, Charles Havran, Alice 'Jochen. Two other door prizes were donated by Brother Sidon and Sister Rosie Tumis and were won by Howard Kieschnick, and President Eric Stein.

Our next monthly lodge meeting will be held on Friday, August 1, at 8 p.m. Brothers and Sisters come and join us in attending our meetings. We will be glad to have you with us.

Before I close I would like to apologize to all of you for laxness in not having a letter in the Vestnik in the past. Time certainly does fly by when you keep busy. I will try to do better in the future.

LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members: Here we are smack in the middle of summer. The past weeks many have been thinking and saying, "three whole months, no school", etc., and now soon we will be moaning, "only four, three, or two weeks left." But with September comes generally cooler weather.

Also in September we look forward to a nice celebration of our Lodge's 65th anniversary, and its present home's 35th anniversary. At our monthly meeting on Sunday, July 13, more plans were discussed and when they are final they will be announced and published. But it isn't too early to remind you to reserve the weekend of September 28th to enjoy together.

Sunday's meeting was well attended for a summer meeting, over fifty members and one guest, lVfr. Ray Turner, were prosent. Youth Leader Robert Johnnie thanked the ladies for the cakes that they

8 donated for the cake walk at the youth club dance the preceding Saturday night. A nice profit was realized from them.

On July 10th, the Ladies Circle chartered a bus to Temple, to visit lodge headquarters and on the return trip, stopped in West. Other lodge members were along, and all of us want to express our appreciation for the hospitality shown us in Temple. They really rolled out the proverbial red carpet. You've never seen such a gracious staff at any organzation, unless it would be at West, where we stopped to tour the Cechoslovak Publishing Co. facilities. Sister Maxine Sefcik welcomed us cordially. (Maxine wittily and humbly assured us it was "Maxine" and `Mrs.' Sefcik was not present").

Editor Sefcik was attending a meeting elsewhere, but it was a worthwhile and most interesting stop, as similarily was the one at Nernecek's Market. There, many of us purchased goodies from the friendly personnel and our aromatic packages later filled the bus with a promise of good meals ahead. Sister Joann Hixson will probably write much more in detail in her Ladies'Circle report.

Everything isn't good news for, as usual, several members were reported ill. Sister Gladys Povolny and Joy Belcher are recovering at home from recent surgeries. One of our long-time members and former worker, Brother Joe Koci went to Scott & White Hospital in Ternple for a series of tests. We hope the outcome was good and surely wish that we would see him and his wife Flora, at al meeting, soon.

Brother Johnny Owen and Sister Mary Frances Loggins were also hospitalized. We were sorry to hear of the death of Brother Henry Kovarnik and extend sympathy to his daughters, Sisters Leslie Ruzicka and Fred Karlicek.

Other business at Sunday's meeting was soon completed and dinner was served by Sisters Frances and Rose Jaworski, Joy Paprskar, Helen Griffin and Kristi Johnnie. Next month's host and hostesses will be Brother and Sister Rudy and Justine Chaloupka. Sister Lillie Matusevitch told me that her daughter-in-law, Naldene, recently received her Master's degree in art at Victoria, Texas. Congratulations to her.

VESTNIK Brother Joe Krivanek, or financial secretary, as usual, scored again and the lodge accepted six new members this month due to his efforts. Our Joe is certainly a go-getter and he and his wife, Inez, deserve a few kudos for making it so simple to conduct our insurance transactions, as their home is so often open to accommodate us.

Because of the time element between submitting the lodge report, and date of publication, I didn't have the opportunity to write about the 35th wedding anniversary of Brother Carl and Sister Christine Zich on June 27th, so belated congratulations are due them with wishes for a wonderful future.

In closing, may I please inform you of some upcoming dance dates: August 16, Lodge dance with the Rhythmaires; September 6, St. Paul's Church dance with Jody Mikula's orchestra; September 20th, Lodge dance with Rhythmaires and don't forget, September 28th, the Anniversary Celebration!

Sister Smith reported the June 18th dance by the Jeff and Eddie Skeets Orchestra was very successful. We hope to have them back in 1976.

The Musical Jamboree on Sunday, July 6th was very successful.

GROUP FROM LODGE 92 TOURS LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, MUSEUM, This enthusiastic group came to see for themselves what has been accomplished in the Library, Archives, and Museum (LAM Dept.) and, to make this a special outing, they brought their lunches with them and made it a very enjoyable occasion. They came and saw many outstanding displays such as the Dr. John J. Shiner Country Doctor's office. The Baca dulcimer (a very unusual musical instrument made in the 1890s), the 6 1/2 foot carpenters plane made out of a tree log, the 445-year-old Bible printed in 1530, the 250-year-old shawl handed down from generation to generation by the Frank Hnat family of San Jose, Calif., the outstanding Rev. Chlumsky display in which items dated as far back as 627 AD are displayed and many other rare relics of the past.

You too should see the LAM Department which is open Monday through Friday from 8 to 12 a.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. There is no admission charge. Come and see it soon.

We still accept any item of a historical nature for display in our museum; if you have anything that has some historical value, consider displaying it here, where it will be safe from fire or theft and it will advertise your family for all time. All such items are entered in our Golden Book which is open for inspection to any visitor. If you could hear the comments of school children who tour

our museum, you would want to display your relics here, too.

LODGE NO. 66, WACO

Dear Members, The July meeting was called to order by President Emil Hanus at 2:40 p.m. There was a very good attendance.

The pledge of allegiance and the lodge motto was recited by Steven Stanislav, Robert and Arthur Leggott.

Visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Mike Glatter, Lorraine Mynar, Ray and Ruby Orsag, Velma Lee Beavers, Willie Mae Miller. It was nice to see Brother and Sister Albert Casper also with us. We hope that all of you will come again.

President Emil Harms asked everyone to stand in silent prayer for Mrs. Annie Pavlicek, mother of Brother James Pavlicek.

All the officers were present and the June minutes were accepted as read.

A letter was read from Brother John H. Murphy, District III treasurer.

Due to the absence of the parliamentarians, President Hanus appointed Brother Frank Kofnovec to sit in for them.

Brother Silas Smith asked Sister Engelke to read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting of July 7th.

Sister Jeanette Smith reported on the Entertainment C'ommittee's

20th anniversary of Linden Hall — the ladies are to bring sandwiches and a dessert. The lodge will furnish drinks and chips. The Harold Strand Orchestra will play from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Sister Parma gave the youth club report. Congratulations to the club. on winning second place in the Youth Club of the Year competition and also placed second with their poster. Sister Parma recognized the winners at YAD. The club did real well with their booth at the Musical Jamboree.

Cynthia Slovak, president of the youth club, said they will have an exchange student, Celine Catalon, from the Philippines staying at their home. The club has accepted her as a social member for one year. In this way she can get acquainted with other people, learn what is done in the club and can take part in the club activities.

This is a very worthy project for our youth and will be a pleasant and educational event.

Sister Engelke and Brother Emil 'Hanus gave the quarterly reports of Linden Hall for May, June, and July. They were very good reports.

Dana Pavelka, Tena Urbanek and Cynthia Kofnovec, presented the song, "On Top of the World," which they sang at the YAD in the talent contest.

Steven Stanislav presented the piano selection he did. He will compete at the State YAD in Temple.

Fraternally, Annie Hanus, English Reporter - SPJST -LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Readers, June was a busy month for members of Lodge No. 74. At our regular monthly meeting, I was appointed to help our secretary, Sister Dorothy Smith, report on events taking place at our lodge. She will inform you of what takes place at our monthly meeting and of coming events. I will tell you about the events as they take place.

Qn Wednesday, June 11, some of

VESTNIK our youth club members graduated from 12 weeks of square dance lessons. On the next day, June 12, they participated in the Doce de Junio. This was Houston County's birthday fiesta and was celebrated in the David Crockett Memorial Build'lng in Crockett. The fiesta opened with a parade at 2 and the SPJST square dancers rode on a float in the parade. Later in the day they performed by dancing for the public. This event was sponsored by the Houston County Historical Survey Committee and we were glad to have been asked to participate.

On Friday, June 13th, the Fiddlers' Festival was held in Crockett and our lodge was used that night for the annual dance which is sponsored yearly by the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. We are glad that Lodge No. 74 has been able to serve our community in this and in many other ways. On June 28th, the Lions Club of Houston County met at our lodge. A buffet dinner was served and the officers of each club were installed in a joint service for the coming year.

Amid all of the above activities, our youth club had been practicing all month for a special Bicentennial program for the. Fourth of July. In my next letter I will tell you about the events of this special day.

Fraternally, Linda Michka — LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters: I heard that the Hawaiian dance was enjoyed by all those there.

I have not received the dance requests from that night, but they should be in my possession by the next letter.

I was sorry that I missed the last monthly meeting due to illness.

From the reports of the meeting, I think I missed quite a bit. It was reported that the lodge is going to need a new roof and a few aids have been received and are being considered. Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg has resigned and Louise Knapick has been elected youth leader. Mrs. Wahlberg had a hard job and Mrs. Knapick will have a hard job ahead of her, too. It was also reported that Ernie Hanka, who is still in the Veterans Adm. Hospital, seems to be progressing for the

Wednesday, July 23, 1975 good, from his stroke. We are all awaiting the day when we see Ernie back at the lodge.

Probably by the time you read this the choral group will have returned from Fort Worth and their singing at the opening of the new Sokol lodge in that city. I am very excited about going and hope to have a colorful and glowing account of the day for you to read in a letter.

Two of our members are in quarantine, Don and Ruth Ann Bartula are at home suffering from hepatitis. We all hope they are feeling better and can get out pretty soon.

Don't forget that the ceramic classes are held every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and that the hamburger stand is open for lunch and snacks. Volleyball practice is held on Wednesday nights starting at 6:30 or 7 p.m. and lasting until? Also don't forget that the Hi-Toppers will be, playing for the Saturday, July 26th dance. I will bet that there some people who are beginning to sprout webbed feet or at least water wings in order to survive this wet weather we have been having this summer. Everyone take care and I'll see you all here next week.

Oh, I almost forgot to wish one of the most important people in my life a happy birthday. My father was 70 years young on July 10th, so happy belated birthday, dad!

LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE

Dear Members, Our lodge held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, July 13th.

Following the opening of the meeting by President Frank Zabransky, the pledge was led by Annie Zabransky and Laura Neubauer.

Resolutions of sympathy were read by Hilmer G-aletka for our departed sister, Mrs. Agnes Bucek, and our lodge brother, Frank Zavesky.

Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the June meeting which were approved. Correspondence followed.

Youth Leader Helen Zabransky gave her report on the youth club. She reported that all of those who went to camp had a wonderful time. President Zabransky and Sister Andela, Zabransky reported on their visit to the camp at Bastrop. They reported that the camp was well organized and the youth were learning and having fun at their different activities.

The August meeting which is an annual Family Day, was discussed.

A noon meal consisting of stew and the trimmings will be served. The

11 ladies of the lodge are asked to donate cakes, pies, kolaehes, peaches or pickles for dinner. Tickets will be: adults, $1.25, and youth, 75c.

The youth club will have games and entertainment. All members are invited to attend. Committee members were also named.

Refund checks were given and the meeting adjourned.

The youth club then presented a short program consisting of.

LODGE NO. 48, BEY Dear Members, The Beyersville SPJST Lodge No. 48 held their regular monthly meeting on Monday evening, July 14th. President Alfred Gensler called the meeting to order. Sharon Beran read last month's minutes; they stood approved as read.

Ruth Wuensche gave• her financial report on insurances.

We had two new members join our lodge; Kristy Renee Turek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Turek and Stacie Marie Stalmach, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Stalmach. Olin Biar resigned as reporter and Sharon Reran was appointed to finish the year porter.

We had two reunions and one wedding reception last month. The first reunion was the Preismeyer reunion, on June 22, and the second one was the Shiller-Hejl reunion on June 20. The McCown-Matoska wedding reception was on the list of June.

District YAD was held in Cyclone on July 13 and we had sev-

12 eral entries. The lodge poster won first place and will go to the state competition. Virginia Wuensche entered the individual talent competition, and Denise and Virginia Wuensche and Betty Wiesner entered into the crafts. Betty Wiesner won second place with her craft entry.

Our next meeting is scheduled for August 10.

Fraternally, Sharon 13eran, Reporter - SPJST — LADIES' CIRCLE LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Friends: With the enthusiasm that only a group of Czechs can generate, the members and friends of the Ladies' Circle of Lodge 92 enjoyed a chartered bus trip to the Supreme Lodge Headquarters in Temple on Thursday, July 10, 1975. Thanks to the promptness of everyone, the fully-occupied bus left ahead of schedule and despite an unplanned tour of the metropolitan Alvarado area to pick up three hitchhikers, the group arrived in Temple well before noon. There they were graciously greeted by Otto Hanus, curator of the Museum, Library and Archives. Also on hand that day attending a meeting were Brothers Sid Pokladnik, Edw. Marek, Ben Zabcik, Joe B. Hejny, and Leonard Mikeska, and the members of our tour enjoyed visiting briefly with them.

To those who had not previously visited the contemporary building that houses the headquarters of the SPJST, Museum, Library and Archives, it was truly an eye-opening experience. The design of the building with its tinted glass windows and ample floor space provides the SPJST offices with a modern, efficient working area.

At the same time, the contemporary design is an excellent setting for the historical contents of the museum.

In that area, it is apparent that Mr. Hanus and the staff have worked hard to create the unique displays that show the history of the Czechs in Texas along with other historical artifacts. The wall mural that decorates the entry invites the visitor to share a historic adventure into the past as it traces the journey of the Czech people.

VESTNIK From a collection of old Czech Bibles (the oldest dated 1765) to a genuine cotton (picking) sack, the museum has something of interest for everyone.

Some of the younger members marveled at the cumbersom handoperdted farm implements, oldfashioned kitchen utinsels and wooden tools as older members remembered well working with such "antiques" in their youth. Seamstresses, likewise, inspected the displays of fine, intricate handwork and appreciated the hours that went into the making of the dresses sewn entirely by hand.

A wall commemorating the tragedy of Lidice contrasts with a collection of military uniforms and medals worn proudly by Czech regiments.

One item in a display of musical instruments was of particular interest to the Fort Worth people as everyone recognized. Mr. Milan's tuba . . . and many memories were relived.

In the Archives, the history of the SPJST was truly fascinating and especially so because so many of our members made that history.

Mr. Joseph Becan, last surviving charter member of Lodge 92, along with several other people, spent a lot of time looking at and recognizing themselves and old friends in the numerous pictures that cover the walls.

In addition to the many items in the museum and archives which provide much educational information, the library containing Czech books, articles, magazines and photographs complete a remarkable facility — one that every SPJST member should see.

Special thanks should be given to those who have donated the hundreds of items, and they should be assured that their priceless memories could not be in a finer place for everyone to enjoy. The group that boarded the bus to make the return trip to Fort Worth unanimously agreed.

The day, however, was not over when the bus departed Temple, since it stopped up the road in West, to visit with the friendly folks there. The Village Bakery, Nemecek Bros. market, and Sulak's Cafe got some customers and then on to a stop at the office of our editor of the Vestnik. Mrs. Maxine Sefcik warmely welcomed every-

Wednesday, July 23, 1975 one and introduced Jan Vaculik who conducted an interesting and informative tour of the Cechoslovak Publishing Co. The day was fading fast as the travelers with their packages of kolache, klobase, and Czech newspapers reluctantly said farewell and headed north.

As has been written somewhere before, half the fun of going anywhere is getting there and that held true on this trip. Everyone enjoyed the time spent in travel as the bus hummed with an assortment of Czech conversation, Joe Paprskar's renditions of all the Czech favorites on his harmonica, or an occasional outburst of singing usually led by Joe Gregory, Lillie McMillen, Joe Hubenak or Bennie Bartek.

The group was fortunate in having a courteous, patient driver, Mr. D. M. Burns of Texas Motor Coaches. His patience with slower members and his helpfulness with the younger ones (he and young Brandon Lackey became good friends) was very much appreciated.

Thanks should be given to Florence Greer who suggested the trip and made most of the arrangements. She and President Anna Juran spent many hours on the phone making sure that everyone who wanted to go got a chance. In addition, "Mother Hen" Anna Juran spent a great deal of time counting and checking the passengers so no one got lost or left behind.

In addition to the regular Circle members, the group was pleased to have along, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Svacek, and Toni Miller and her father, Mr. Korteff. Martha Durham, who is not always able to attend Circle meetings because of her job, solved the problem this trip by taking her employer, J. B. Thomas, with her.

While in Temple Rose Strnad was able to see her sister who dropped by the building to visit. Joe Hubenak and Annie Langer were also able to visit by phone with their sisters, Millie Mikeska.

Everyone was sorry to learn of SL President Morris's hospitalization and wish him a rapid recovery.

Dear Members and Friends, Our second meeting, held at night, was opened by our president, Charlie Matcek at 7:30 p.m. on July the 8th. All members recited the pledge of allegiance and stood in a moment of silence in tribute to Sister Bernice Krobot who passed away since our last meeting.

Sister Krobot, was a good member and will be missed. To her family we want to extend our deepest sympathy. Our sympathy also goes out to Brother Leroy Kamas and Sister Margaret Pollock on the loss of their beloved mother.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by our Secretary Mary Werner. She also read a thank-you letter from the family of Sister Bernice Krobot. Reports were given by the financial secretary, Ellene Zwahr, and the treasurer, Corlis Vallet. Gilbert Walzel, the special fund treasurer gave his reports for the month of June.

We have two very ill members in Polly Ryon Hospital at the present time, and they are Sister Louise Vydrzal and Sister Anna Simara. We sincerely hope their health is much improved by the time we see this in print.

A report on our Memorial Fund was given by Sister Rosa Linda ilartfield.

We were most happy to have the following visitors from Lodge 88 with us: Brother Louis Hanus, and Sister and Brother Karl Lindemann. We enjoyed their visit very much and we hope they will be back to see us again soon.

Sister Benita Walzel and Sister Winniefred Susan were given a big round of applause for painting the door to a new utility room and also sandpapering and painting the cooler that was purchased recently. Thank you both so very much for a job well done.

It was decided to send a getwell card to Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris, who was in

Dear Members and Friends: The Friendship Club had 30 members present and our guests, we enjoyed having were, Mary Batik, Debbie Krivanek, Nancy Boles, Dona Hubena.,k and Eunice Miller.

The members voted on and approved putting a $25 quarter page ad in the Souvenir Program Book for the Grand Opening.

Our meeting on August 6th, will be a covered dish luncheon, and we will hold it in our new building at 6500 Boat Club Road, at 10:30 a.m.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Jeanie Mason, Anna Korteff, who is still confined in the nursing home, Rose Steinman and Brother Louis Beiota.

Sisters Anna Milan and Jeanie Mason won the. door prizes. It looked like a frame up, since Michael Mason did the drawing, and to think he drew his great-grandmother's name. We want to thank Sister Bessie Prochaska for donating one of the prizes.

After the blessing, everyone enjoyed the delicious lunch and the games that followed.

Our lodge meeting Sunday was called to order by our President Jerry Milan. He made welcome our new members, Grover and Yvonne Watson and Sister Frances Mamula who just came in from South Bend, Indiana, with her daughter, Melissa, to be here for our Grand Opening.

Sister Donna Rose Parker reported that 14 youth club members were present and two guests.

Sister Mary Renfro was the door prize recipient.

After a social, everyone donned their work clothes and went out to our new home and worked until 10 p.m.

The print is fine on our new location map and for those going out 199 West (which is also Jacksboro Highway), when you pass KMart (on the left at 6000 Block) you will go under an underpass; turn right at the first street, Boat Club Road, (a drive-in theatre), go out 3 miles.

We still have a lot to do and all are busy as bees. So we hope to see you all, July 25th, 26th, and 27th.

Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris has been in our thoughts and prayers and we do hope he is on the road to a good recovery.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: My report this time begins with the Monday night, July 7th game with Mesquite. (Our Thursday night, July 3 game was postponed and will be re-scheduled later).

We won by an overwhelming score of 19 to 4, in five innings. This was our biggest night, both in hits as well as in scoring. Gil Vetters hurled the first three innings and Jim Scoggins pitched the last, two innings. Vetters allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts, and Scoggins allowed one hit, one walk and struckout 5 batters.

Jim Scoggins hurled a very strong and outstanding game, his best in the last 3 seasons, allowing only 5 hits, 2 walks and had 6 strikeouts. Jim received outstanding help from his teammates afield: and many great plays were made. It was a very rewarding win for the team and needless to say, I was very proud of their performance. Even our opponents were highly complimentary of our defensive play as well as our pitching, which is sort of unusual in a tournament.

Game No. 2 was played Saturday morning, July 12th, at 9 o'clock, against Kennedy's Sausage and we won this game by a score of 4 to 0.

The team turned in another fine performance afield as well as getting 7 hits, 3 walks, 2 sacrifices, and 4 runs. Lionel Schulz turned in a fine and outstanding performance on the mound allowing 6 hits,

2 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Wiley Beesley with a double and 2 singles, Harry Wilkerson with a triple and a single, Larry Brennan with a single and a sacrifice, Jeff Burton with a single and a sacrifice, Mark Winkler with a walk, and Don Jarma with 2 walks.

Game No. 3 was played Saturday afternoon, July 13, at 3 o'clock against the Tarrant County Merchants from Fort Worth and we dropped a heart-breaker by a score of 5 to 4. What hurt was that we allowed 2 unearned runs early in the game, then we forged ahead in the sixth inning to lead 4 to 3 on a 3-run homer by Jeff Burton; only to lose the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, partially due to a questionable call by the umpire which contributed to the loss.

This loss hurt the team deeply because to this point, we were really playing very good ball. Jim Toothman, from the Midwest Springs team, whom we drafted for this tournament, hurled the first 2 and 2/3 innings, allowing 2 hits, 2 walks, one strikeout and 3 runs; he had to leave the game after a har d smash from a grounder.

Lionel Schulz relieved him and allowed one hit, 3 walks, and struck out 3, giving up one run in 3 1/3 innings of outstanding

15 pitching. Jim Scoggins hurled the final 2/3 of an inning and allowed a run on no hits, no walks and did not strike out a batter; he should have actually been the winning pitcher, rather than being charged with the loss. We played hard, but we lost.

Leading hitters for the game were Don Jarma with a double, Jeff Burton with a 3-run home run, Jerry Nobles with a single and 2 walks, Mark Winkler with a walk, Larry Brennan with a walk, Wiley Beesley with a sacrifice and a walk, Greg Driscoll with a walk and Harry Wilkerson with a sacrifice.

By loosing this game, we had to drop down into the losers' bracket and had to play our next game at 1:30 Sunday morning.

After the 3 p.m. Saturday game we had picnic lunch and we all enjoyed the food and refreshments.

Now at 1:39 a.m. Sunday, July 13th, we played a team from Graham, and we won by a score of 3 to 2. We played another fine game afield and Jim Scoggins hurled a very fine game allowing 5 hits, .2 walks and struckout 3 batters.

Leading hitters were Don Jarma with a double and 2 singles, Mark Winkler with a single, Greg Driscoll with a single, Jerry Nobles with a single and Jeff Burton with a sacrifice.

Immediately following this game, we had to play another game at 3 o'clock in the morning, and that is tough, with no sleep and very little rest. We found ourselves playing our fifth game in the tournament. Our early morning opponent was Foster's team of Stephenville, an all - star group, and, sadly, I must report the stress and strain of the previous four games caught up with us and we lost by a score of 10 to 0. We were all too tired to play well and this is what contributed to our loss. Jim Toothman was on the mound for us allowing 12 hits, 4 walks, and struck out 6.

Hitters were Larry Brennan with 2 singles, Mark Winkler with a single and a walk, Wiley Beesley with a single, Jeff Burton with a single, Don Jarma with a walk and Jim Toothman with a walk.

Carlyn and Willie Ondrusek who made the whole tournament with

16 us solidified their title as the No. 1 fans of the team; we enjoyed your presence and thank you for being with us at Stephenville.

This was an enjoyable tournament and the team played some very outstanding ball against some of the best teams from all over Texas. We gained a lot of respect from the teams we played and the experience gained as well as the comradeship among our team will be remembered for many seasons to come and my thanks for the team for the fine effort and sportsmanship they displayed; it was a most enjoyable weekend.

Monday night, July 14th, we played a makeup game with Midwest Springs and we won by a score of 7 to 0 to cinch the second half of play and an outright championship, a trophy and a spot in the Dallas City Championship Playoffs starting probably the week of August 4th. Jim Scoggins turned in a rather fine performance, after the grueling weekend of play, by allowing only 3 hits, no walks, and striking out 14 batters.

The team again played a fine defensive game making many fine plays.

We played 2 games on Thursday night, July 17, and one game will be played on Thursday night, July 24th, at Buckner Park on Humphress St. in Dallas, at 9:15 p.m. Come out and see us play, if you can.

Fraternally, Ben Jarma, Team Manager CZECH HERITAGE FILMS AND BICENTENNIAL FESTIVITY IN HOUSTON Sometimes it is difficult to find words which could express one's thoughts and feelings, especially when inspired and under the influence of the creativity of a great genius in musical arts or the national cultural heritage of the ancestral homeland of our fore-

Such are the moments in which I am finding myself now — still trying and I am sure, inadequately, when expressing my impressions of joy and gratitude and the deep feelings of pride and appreciation wheli viewing the incomparable Slavonic dances (Slovanske tance)

by Antonin Dvorak performed by the Czech Philharmonic and staged and choregraphed in folkloric ballet spectacular by the finest artists of Prague. The same feelings filled my mind and soul when I saw the immortal masterpiece of Bedich Smetana choral cantata"The Czech Song" (Ceska pisen) with its rustic scenic video setting. In this case I was especially moved, since I was privileged to participate in the first American-English performance of this choral work in its premier presentation in 1967 by our Czech-founded Concert Choral Society under the direction of conductor Brother John J. Pech who prepared the special choral ax rangement and the translation.

There is sheer beauty in the immortal music of these two films, enhanced by the ballet choreography and superb color photography of the customs, traditions, habits and many ceremonies of the different seasons of the year, as set in the pastoral and picturesque villages of Bohemia and Moravia, in the artistic video interpretation of descriptive moments, reflecting the feeling and influence of Czech masters immortal music.

The showing of these previous and future films of the Czech cultural heritage and history is the outgrowth of the projected and activated plans of the director of' our Concert Choral Society, Brother Pech, for this fine choral society's educational activity, presented by the Czech Fine Arts and sponsored by Sokol Houston.

The previous film showing at Sokol Houston was attended by an enthusiastic audience of about 300 and if it is any indication of the success of this educational program, the most exiting Comments and compliments expressed by an audience of about 500, which viewed this last presentation, these congratulations on the accomplishinents of this cultural project.

However, the most kind and appreciative expressions from the large and happy audience should be ample assurance for those dedicated to work in the fields of the Czech cultural heritage to continue.

Don't miss these events and especially bring your sons and daughters and your friends to see the treasure of the great cultural heritage of the founders of Sokol, SPJST, KJT, KJZT, Western Life, Mutual Slavonic Fire, CSA,- and many other institutions.

In conclusion, let me say that a most effective representative segment of the Czech-American Texans participated in the Houston Bicentennial parade on July 5th.

Baca's Czech Brass Band (the first Czech band organized in Texas was the Baca band), about 20 strong and colorfully dressed musicians — led by Clarence Baca — rode in the parade seated on a large decorated flat-bed truck kindly made available by J. H. Rose Co. In each corner of the truck's bed were seated lovely young ladies of our newly-organized Folklore Dancing and Singing Ensemble in their beautiful costumes, adding charming smiles and the wave of hands at the applauding crowds lining the streets of the parade, which were cheerfully rewarding with continuous bursts of applause the inimitable Czech marshal music echoing and re-echoing throughout the canyons of downtown Houston. The crowd's appreciative reception of the folkloric marches of Kmoch and others was most pleasing to hear.

A very effective, beautiful and representative four abreast column of the Sokol Houston children, youth and adults, about 60 strong , behind their banner, and led by Emil Kuropata, president, and Leonard Kasowski, director, marched immediately following the Czech band and the spontaneous and continuous applause greeting their appearance in a Sokol tradition heritage way, certainly was well rewarding their effort and the tired feet especially of our youngsters.

July 4th, the lovely Folklore Dancing and Singing Ensemble and the young Sokol gymnasts performed on the stages at the historical Allen's Landing and downtown Sam Houston Park, and received a well-earned and rewarding applause from the viewing audiences.

We, and all who saw the abovementioned Czech cultural activities are very happy and proud with the sincere hope that many more will join in the Czech Fine Arts programs of the Czech Cultural Heritage. All who missed the outstanding Czech cultural film presentations, will be more and more sorry as time goes on. With the coming Czech Day of Sokol Houston, the above presentations represent the Czech Cultural participation in the opening festivities of the Houston Bicentennial Celebration's opening events.

Dear Vestnik Readers: The SPJST Lodge No. 135 held their monthly meeting on July 13th. After the meeting was called to order by President Tom Valek, Secretary Mary Laznovsky informed the members that Lodge 135 had lost a member, Brother Henry Kovarnik. A moment of silence was observed in his memory.

A motion was made by Frank Laznovsky that a donation be made by the lodge to the SPJST Lodge 135 Youth Club in his memory. The motion was seconded by Jerry Chudej.

A report was given to the members on the recent YAD held at Sokol Center and hosted by SPJST Lodge 135.

A get-well card was signed for Brother Nick Morris as all the members wish him a speedy recovery after his recent surgery.

Also a card was signed for Sister Bessie (Mrs. Jerry) Laznovsky, who is in the Ennis hospital and was scheduled for surgery on Wednesday, July 16th.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Sister Mary Ellen Sanderson and were accepted as read.

Our treasurer, Sister Mary Tilich, read the treasurer's report which was very complete and satisfactory.

We were proud to have two outof-town visitors at our luncheon and games party. They were Lucydee Passman from Orlando, Florida, and Monica Gorka from Buffalo, New York. Do come back to see us again when you visit our city.

Sister Frances Olexa reported that the Czech film would be shown on Czech Day and sponsored by the Birthday Club Sisters.

Sorry to hear that Sister Mary Kalousek has high blood pressure and is still confined to her home.

Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris was in the Veterans Adm. Hospital in Temple. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Our sincere and deepest sympathy to Sister Birdie Hilsher and family. Sister Hilsher lost her father, Mr. Elo A. Knippel, just exactly one month after her mother passed on. May God give you the strength to overcome this great loss.

All you sisters be sure and mark your calendars for Homecoming Day, which is August 17th. This is when our Lodge 88 gives all the members a free beef dinner.

Please remember to bring your membership card for identification. The Birthday Club Sisters will have a bazaar on Homecoming Day with Sister Mary `Finch, chairman, and Sister Rosalee Kostom, co-chairman. We will appreciate any fancy or useful articles for the bazaar.

The Moody Foundation provided funds for seven 1975 grants of $4,000 each. Texas Interscholastic League Foundation administers the grants.

Vincent earned eligibility for the Moody Scholarship by participation in the University Interscholastic League contests in Number Sense, One-Act Play, Science and Spelling.

This year he was a member of his school's One-Act cast that won first in district. He was named to the All-Star cast. He competed in the 1973 and 1974 One-Act Play con tests when the Caldwell High entries won third and second in district, respectively.

In Number Sense he won second in district in 1975, third in district in 1973 and competed in 1972. He took second in district Science competition in 1973, first in district and sixth at region in 1974, and third in district this year. He won first at district, third in regional and sixth at state in 1975 spelling competition.

Valedictorian of his graduating class, he e a r n e d a four-•y e a r straight A grade average. He scored 1370 on the College Entrance Exem ination Board test.

In high school Vincent was named Best Thespian. He was vicepresident of the National Honor Society, Student Council vice president and treasurer, vice president of his class and a Betty Crocker Award winner. He was a member of the Science Club, National Honnor Society and played football, basketball, track and tennis.

"Vincent is the type of student who will get the most out of educational opportunities," said Dr. Rhea H. Williams, TILP secretary and UIL director. "He has the talent, energy and determination that it takes to succeed. We are proud to have him as a Moody Scholar.

We know he will be a success."

Vincent plans to major in mathemattcs at Texas A&M University in preparation for a career in college teaching.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vince Schielack. Sr., and a member of Lodge No. 17 of New Tabor,

Wednesday, July 23, 1975 CELEBRATE SILVER ANNIVERSARY In honor of the 25th wedding an niversary of Mr. and Mrs. Robert A Martinak, their children, Richard and Rhonda honored them with a celebration at the SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston, from 2 until 9 o'clock on Sunday, July 13, 1975.

A delicious barbecue beef dinner with all the trimmings was served to approximately 400 guests.

Guests came from Park, Willow Springs, La Grange, Industry, Bren ham, Weimar, El Campo, Franklin and Spring.

Guests were registered by Mrs. Ann Sefcik. who also assisted Mrs. Evelyn Zientek, and Mrs. Minnie Krotky in serving the cake and punch.

After a meal, a dance was held with music furnished by the Leroy Matocha Orchestra of Fayetteville. The Grand March was led

by Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Wisher.

Ruth Hilsher and Robert Martinak were married on Sunday, July 9, 1950 at Warrenton Lutheran Church. Parents of the couple are Mrs. Charles HilshrT of Park, and the late Charles Hilsher and Mrs. Frank Martinak of Willow Springs, and the late Frank Martinak.

DISTRICT II YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT DAY District II held its annual YAD at Lodge No. 24, Cyclone, on July 13. It was a great day. The children really did come out and the attendance was also very good.

There were 178 entries in Craft'and 56 entries in Talent and Royalty.

There were many more entries than last year in both categories and the royalty was the Lodge No. 20, Granger, was the leading lodge with 70 entries. The 1st place winners were distributed fairly well among all the lodges with almost all lodges winning at least one first place.

I would like to thank Ronnie Rieger for being the MC for the talent contest. He did a swell job. I would also like to thank ALL of the faithful youth leaders and assistants and district officers, district director and all others who worked all during the con There were over 20 people working almost all afternoon in order to accomplish a successful YAD. All of these workers did a splendid job; especially the tabulating committee. The SPJST, as well as myself, wish to thank you for the help. I also wish to thank everyone of you who helped in any wa y; we certainly do appreciate it because

19 we could not have done it without you.

To Lodge 24, for being such good hosts, for the delicious meal, and for letting us use your facilities, for all this we are grateful.

DISTRICT V YAD HELD JUNE 29th, 1975 AT LODGE 88, HOUSTON

Parties are planned for each night, one of which will be on a carnival style, and you will need some pennies for this. Please bring some old clothes for a happie party.

Leaders, please don't forget to make name tags for the youth of your club. I will make name tags for all leaders and chaperones.

We will have a flag ceremony twice daily and there should be a patriotic song or reading in addition to the pledge. Each club will be in charge of at least one of these ceremonies; please prepare something in advance.

The shortest way to Camp Val Verde from Temple is to take Hwy. 36 West out of Temple, go about 6 miles, take Hwy. 317 (to the right) toward Moody, and go straight through Moody and on to McGregor; go to the 2nd red light in McGregor and turn right this will be Hwy. 84 heading east toward Waco, go about 8 miles to the Val Verde exit (to the left) follow that crooked road and when you come to a "T", turn right and then take the 2nd road to the left and that takes you into camp. Stop at the flag pole for further instructions. For Lovelady campers, look at your hwy. maps and when you get to Waco, get on Hwy. 84 heading west toward McGregor, take Val Verde exit to the right and follow instructions above.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The youth club of Lodge No. 4 held their monthly meeting on July 13th. Annie Zabransky called the meeting to order followed by roll call. Then Kenneth Sevcik read the minutes. Arlene Zak read the treasurer's report. Annie Zabransky introduced our guest, Mr. David Neubauer. Under old business we discussed about camp, and they said they had fun.

Under new business, the youth discussed what we are going to do at family day. The youth are going to give $5 to the Blue Bonnet Ranch.

The youth club will meet on August 6th, at the Grant Building, and we will have a social night at 5:30. The door prizes that evening went to:, adult, Mrs. Gay Galetka, youth, Kathleen Zak; July birthday cake went to Mr. Spanhel.

We were pleased to award a prize to Lynn and Robert Mokry, winners of the bottle and can opener contest. Lynn and Robert sold the most openers, which had SPJST on them.

We missed Kathryn Adamek, at the meeting. Mrs. Adamek and daughter, Edwina, are attending 4-H activities in Kansas.

There will be no social this month. For those of you who do not attend YAD or go to camp, we will see you at the regular meeting at 3 p.m. on the second Sunday in August.

Robert Mokry, (7-15-75) Reporter LODGE NO, 130, DALLAS Dear Vestnik Readers, July 13, Lodge 130 held its monthly meeting. The youth club organized committees for our dance, "Dogpatch, USA" on October 11th.

Also, while on old business, we postponed our visit to Six Flags.

The new date for that special event is August 5th. We hope everyone will be able to join us on that day.

We have elected our new delegates and alternates for District III. They are: Rita Kamas, Jennifer May, Jeff Mikulec, delegates; Catherine Beran and John Vrla as alternates.

A special event on the agenda was the arts and craft display and talent show. The youth of our lodge brought their prize-winning arts and crafts from YAD and performed their talents, such as tap dancing, acrobatics, and Polynesian dancing. Also on display was our 1st place winning poster.

After the presentation we had a delicious meal prepared by the Vrlas. Many thanks to them and everyone who heaped.

We would like to extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery to President Nick Morris.

VESTNIK LODGE' NO. 47, SEATON Dear Members, Friends and Readers, On July 10, the regular lodge meeting was called to order by Don na Kohutek. Katherine Morris led the youth in the pledge of allegiance to the flag and the club motto. Kim Mikulas read the roll call and the minutes of the last meeting, and they were approved as read. Birthdays in the month of July are Kim Stefka. Our social for the month of July will be a game night at the ball and it will begin at 7 p.m. and it will end at 9 p.m. on July 25.

On August 15, we are planning to have a Fund-Raising Night at Seaton Star Hall.

We had three new members to join and they were Jimmy Lynn Bryant, Dena Bryant, Jerry Dean Bryant, whom we are glad to have as members. There were three mem bers of the youth club who wrote Czech letters and they were Peggy Mesecke, Marile Allen and James Allen. The Jr. door prize was won
