First, recognition and presentation was given to Sister Mollie Ewell of Lodge 169, Brenham for being a sales representative of the Application-a Month Club for 84 consecutive months, also a plaque was given to her for writing up 18 members in the district. Next presentation was bestowed upon Brother Clint Luksa of Lodge 7, Caldwell, for selling the most insurance ($82,000). After Brother Smith made the presentations, he expressed his congratulations and wished District I representatives good luck.

Before picture taking, District I Director John Kubena, Melvin Skrabanek, Rest Home director and PC member; District I President Willie Trcalek and the editor were called upon to express their sentiments before the happy evening came to an end.

District I is known for having several charter lodges and its membership continues to grow and show interest in keeping up with modern facilities, whenever they can, to stimulate enthusiasm and attract prospective members for the sale representatives to enroll . a bigger and better District I membership. FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE Status Report on NB 1765 1 May 1975 Dear Members: In order to keep you current on the situation relative to House Bill 1765 and the results of our work in this area I would like to submit this brief report to you We appeared before a committee of the Texas House Tuesday evening, April 29th, and I think we can safely assume that HB 1765, as proposed, is dead for this legislative session.

The chairman of the committee stated that he was assigning the bill to a sub-committee. The chairman of that sub-committee told Me that the committee was going to work out an amendment which will exempt Fraternal Benefit Societies, pursuant to testimony heard that evening. If the subcommittee finishes its final work on the bill during this session, it is very doubtful that the bill could reach the full House during this session because of the terrific legislative backlog that faces the Legislature in these last few weeks.

In other words, the bill is pretty well dead for this session, and if it is ever reported out of sub-committee, it would be reported out in a form that would exempt Fraternal Benefit Societies.

We owe a lot for the defeat of this bill to several legislators in both Houses of the Legislature. We had friends and allies from expected and unexpected quarters. I was pleased with the reception we got and the overall results of the hearing. I think the most curious aspect of the bill's proponents' arguments was their statements pertaining to alleged abuses and shortcomings in the insurance industry, but as I pointed out, those Allegations simply do not wash on representatives of Fraternal Benefit Societies; we are not experiencing the same difficulties and have really not heard of those

abuses occurring in our circles.

Another thought brought out was that we do not doubt that these abuses have and are occurring; we simply do not accept responsibility for them and our record in this area is very good. It would appear then, that the solutions to the abuses must come from companies other than Fraternal Benefit Societies.

It was good working on our position and presentation with Brothers Reuben Lesikar, Joe B. Hejny, Leonard Mikeska and Ben Zalycik, plus officials from the National Fraternal Congress such as Raymond Klee, Ralph Lake, Bob Walton, and Mr. Henry G. Borden, all of whom came down for the hearings, and certainly with Mr. Billy Cowan, our legislative representative in Austin. We also had the pleasure of working with leaders and representatives of other fraternals in the state. It was a joint effort and it paid off.

In Texas, a bill that is proposed land receives no action or is not reported out of committee during one session is not automatically brought back during the next session; it must be reintroduced as a new bill. (Such bills are automatically up for further consideration in those states having annual legislative sessions). Indications are that if and when this bill ever comes before a committee of the Legislature in the future, it will come in a form so as to exclude Fraternal Benefit Societies.

We wish to thank those members who supported our efforts on HB 1765. You responded promptly and well.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES FROM LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON By this time the news, is fairly general that there will be a play at the Schulenburg High School Theater. But I would like to add a few comments to remind you not to miss seeing this performance.

Backstage, Inc., a Fine Arts Council for South Central Texas, is bringing the Hiahol Dramatic Club of Lodge 88, Houston, to Schulenburg on May lath.

"Ponocny Stoura — poi lasce mzoura" will be presented in two performances — at 2:30 and 7 p.m.

This Czech group is recognized for its interest in Clzech culture and the perpetuation of the language. By the efforts of this group, we express our appreciation for our ancestry and our early settlers in Texas, keeping in mind that our Czech heritage is kept alive among our friends.

Join us on May lath for a full afternoon and evening at this hilarious performance. You are sure to enjoy it!

Last, but not least, my thanks go to the members of the cast who performed in the play, "Healthy, Wealthy and Dumb." This was a repeat comedy on the stage of Lodge 88, Houston, on Sunday, May 4th.

And prior to this performance, the youth of our Lodge 88, gave a most effective performance on March 30th in "How Betsy Butted In." This group, under the direction of Sister Marcell Malak, is to be complimented for the success of this play and for interest shown in the stage.

The cooperation of this youth group stands out as' a promise of more accomplishments to come.

Youth Club officers Darlene Zahirnia,k, Patty Wright, and Carol Mynar led the assembly in the pledge of allegiance.

Brother Zahirniak then called on Youth Leader Maxine Sefeik to

take charge of the special designated portion of the meeting, which was honoring mothers in attendance with some fine entertainment by Mr, and Mrs. Ray Witty of West. They were given a standing ovation for their performance.

Following the program Brother Frank Cocek, secretary, was called upon to read the minutes of the previous meeting. After a minor correction, the minutes were approved by the membership.

Financial Secretary Brother Robert Wright reported on the lodge business matters; a report which was very encouraging to the mem-

bers present. We shall look forward to another favorable report next month.

President Zahirniak complimented Brother Raymond Hruska, retired financial secretary, for his outstanding work that he executed during his term in office. After some favorable comments by Brothers George Kacir and Rudy

Wednesday, May 14, 1975 Sefcik, a motion was made and voted on that a thank-you letter with a monetary gift enclosed be sent to Brother Hruska on behalf of the lodge officers and members of Lodge 54, for his appreciated services. It was also agreed upon that this action be taken immediately, instead of at a later date.

Brother Zahirniak appointed Sister Sefcik to compose a letter of appreciation to Brother Hruska, and for the following officers to sign the letter to-wit: president, vice president, secretary, financial secretary and youth leader.

Next item on the agenda was the youth club activities report by Sister Sefcik who presented an outlined schedule on the up-todate and future functions of the club's affiliation. I will not elaborate on the subject because Sister Maxine will have a mention of this topic in her letter to the Vestnik.

Her oral information was well received and complimented by the chairman.

Brother Zahirniak gave his report on the findings of the lodge home; mainly, on the bids for the exterior beautification; also something that cropped up recently which was corrected immediately.

He further stated that the local bidder received the paint job on the building and the paint shall be purchased from a Waco paint dealer for the price that was quoted in the meeting. On this transaction, a motion was made and seconded to pursue the contract.

While on the beautification subject, a suggestion was made by Bister Sefcik that we consider, in the future, to install a large SPJST sign: above the main entrance where the present one remains.

Due to lack of time, the matter was tabled until the next meeting when a complete discussion can be held.

Mention of the fact was made that those attending District III meeting at Lodge 130 in Dallas were: Brother and Sister George Kacir, Brother and Sister Rudy Sefcik; youth members Darlene Zahirniak, Carol Mynar and Edwin Sefcik. Several comments were made to the membership relating to the various discussed topics at the district meeting. President Zahirniak expressed his regret for his absence due to a large event being booked at our lodge on the

VE S TN f K same date. It was also mentioned that Lodge No. 35, Elk, will host the fall district meeting.

Prior to adjournment, the members were pleasantly surprised and privileged to have a nice visit from Mr. and Mrs. Stefan Sarnovsky and their two small children from Washington, D.C. Mr. Sarnovsky, a second secretary of the Embassy of CSSR, was an invited special guest to participate in the National Ennis Polka Festival. On the afternoon date of our lodge meeting, they were enroute through this area and took the opportunity to stop and visit with some of last year's acquaintances in West.

Editor Rudy Sefcik introduced the couple in Czech and English and welcomed them to SPJST Lodge No. 54. Mr. Sarnovsky spoke briefly expressing his sentiments and also mentioned the fact that "We know of the SPJST Society very well." He stated they enjoyed the warm hospitality wherever they have gone while traveling in Texas. They were invited to stay for the fellowship.

It was reported, at this time, that we have two juvenile enrollees for Lodge 54 membership: John and Gregory Michell. We welcome them and we were happy to learn that they joined primarily to participate in the club's activities.

Sister Bonnie Pavlas was our lucky door prize winner for the month of May. The meeting was then adjourned and snacks and refreshments were served. The refreshments were donated by Brother and Sister George Kacir. We want to thank them very much.

June 1st is the date of our next meeting when all the fathers will be honored by the youth club. Be sure and keep this date in mind and try to make an effort to attend. The youth will present cornical skits, so do take interest and see for yourself what our youth are doing for your lodge. Let's show them our appreciation at the June meeting, beginning at 3 p.m. and the youth club meeting at 2 p.m., with a guest speaker. Free refreshments and cold cuts will follow adjournment.

LODGE NO. 81, NEEDVILLE Dear Members, I want to remind you that our meeting in May will be held on the 3rd Sunday — May the 18th — at 2 p.m. This way it will give all of you a chance, who are fortunate enough to still have a mother, to be with her on Mother's Day, which comes on the 2nd Sunday in May, and it was for that reason that the meeting was put off until the 3rd Sunday.

Also, the members of Lodge 81 will be treated to a good barbecue meal right after the meeting is over, so make a circle on your calendar around the 18th of May and make it a point to be present and enjoy good eating and fine fellowship.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, There weren't as many people as we had hoped for at the English play, "Healthy, Wealthy, and Dumb," but we would like to thank those who did come and those who Stayed for the free dance. The fried chicken dinner couldn't have been better and Willie Wehring and his helpers should be commended. Also, I'd like to thank the ladies of the lodge for donating the delicious pastries for the lunch. Speaking of plays, the Hlahol Dramatic Club will be presenting the Czech play, "Ponocny Stoura po lasce mzoura," at the old Schulenburg High School on Sunday, May 18, The play is being presented in cooperation with Backstage, Inc., a non-profit organization for the advancement of art and culture in the SW. There will be two performances: one at 2:30 p.m., and at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are $1.50 for adults and 75c for children and tickets at the door are $1.75 for adults and $1 for children.

Don't forget, the play will be presented twice on Sunday, May 18, in Schulenburg at the old high school auditorium. Even if you don't understand Czech, you will enjoy the

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Matusek celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary and Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Vandever celebrated their 34th. Congratulations to the birthday and anniversary celebrants and may you all have many more happy days. We also had some visitors from Brenham: the T. C. Quebecs, the Schwartzs, and the Glenwood Prenziers. Come back and see us again soon, folks. Also, I think that one particularly nice request was from Irma Zucha from her husband, Joe. The reason he gave for the request was "just because he loved his wife." That was very considerate and nice of you, Mr. Zucha. Don't forget that Leo Heinrich will be playing for the Saturday, May 17th dance, and the chess will be semi-formal. If you feel like kicking your heels up this Saturday night, come out and join us and have a good time.

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS SOFTBALL TEAM

Dear Brothers and Sisters: On Thursday night, May 1st, we played Ford, Beacon and Davis and we won by a score of 4 to 1 behind the three-hit pitching of Lionel Schulz. He pitched an outstanding game because he did not walk a batter, he struck out 5 and gave up only three hits. As a matter of fact, the first 20 batters were erased before he allowed ' any base runners.

Leading hitters were Mark Winkler with a double and 2 singles, Jeff Burton with a home run, Wiley Beesley with a single, Lawrence Honza with a single, Don Jarma with a single, Lionel Schulz with 2 singles and Harry Wilkerson with a sacrifice.

The team played real good ball afield since only one error was committed. We had'a nice turnout of fans at the game, and their presence was appreciated.

Monday night, May 5th, we won our third game in our Monday night league by eeking out a 4-to-3 victory over the Mesquite team.

We had one bad inning, the third, when we committed 2 errors which led to 3 unearned runs, but we stayed in there and eventually won the game.

Gil Vetters hurled a fine game allowing 3 hits, no walks and struckout 8 batters, all 3 runs were unearned.

LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX HOLDS GROUND-BREAKING CEREMONIES The weather was perfect on Sunday, April 20th, and the attendance was large. Both elements combined made the ground-breaking ceremonies at Lodge 13, Dime Box a very pleasant and successful affair. The, enthusiasm of the crowd and the membership of Lodge 13, coupled with the strong support of the entire Dime Box community, made for a very joyous and spirited occasion.

Approximately 350 people showed up for the brief ground-breaking ceremonies and the dance that followed in the afternoon. A delicious barbecue dinner was served to the gathering from 11:30 to 1 pm., with refreshments starting at noon. The following also spoke briefly and made appropriate remarks: Lodge 13 President Claude Flippin, District I Director John Kubena, District I President Willie Trcalek, District I Sales Representative Ben Trcalek, Vice President Jim A. Bayer, Secretary Arno Zwerneman, Treasurer Mildred Horak, Richard J. Milburn, and Joe Valigura. Flag Bearer Master Russell Bay also expressed the sentiments of the young people. Youth Leader Nellene Spacek was busy with other duties at the time.

The local press was represented by reporters and photographers from the Giddings Times and News and the Burleson County Citizen-Tribune in Caldwell and we are indebted to them for the accompanying pictures. These pictures have already appeared in the two newspapers.

The new lodge building will be 80 by 120 ft., of metal construction with central air conditioning and heating, completely insulated, and built on a concrete slab. The building will be located north of and behind the present and old lodge hall on a plot of ground 3.2 acres in size. The old building will be left intact through the summer because of some scheduled events to take place there in the next few months, but will eventually be sold and razed. The old hall dates back to the early part of this century and for its day and time served the community well. Times are changing, however, and the general public is demanding comforts

commensurate with the times and generally those comforts in their own homes. Still, the groundbreaking and social on April 20th" took place in an air of nostalgia, because a lot of people had memories of the many good, times in years past in the old hall.

Lodge 13 Texaska Orlice is one of the original 25 chartered lodges of the SPJST, dating back to July 1, 1897. After an extended period of dormancy and inactivity, the lodge was recently revived with new officers who, together with officers from the Supreme Lodge, started planning a new lodge home.

Construction of the new building is expected to start soon, and the contractors have advised that the construction will be completed by Sunday, October 26th, which has been set as the date of the official opening and dedication.

The general feeling is that the new lodge home of Lodge No. 13 will be a distinct asset to the community of Dime Box and the surrounding areas of Giddings, Lexington, Caldwell and other communities. It will be a major entertainment and social center for the entire area encompassing Lee and Burleson Counties.

Lodge officers at Lodge 13 are: President Claude Flippin, Vice President Jim A. Bayer, Secretary and Financial Secretary Arno Zwerneman, Treasurer Mrs. Mildred (Albin) Horak, and Youth Leader Nellene Spacek.

The Building Committee consists of Chairman Richard J. Milburn, Danny Iselt, Etheibert Spacek, Gloria Ann Jatzlau, and Albert

On April 20th, we had the opportunity to meet a good many folks who are natives of the Dime Box area and who are presently living elsewhere, but who came back to witness this progress in their borne town community. Without exception, all of these folks vowed to return as. often as they could to support Lodge 13, and this enterprise in Dime Box, especially the opening and dedication on October 26th. That's the kind of spirit it takes!

CMH ADMINISTRATOR NAMES CHIEF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST Caldwell, Idaho—Joe Baugh, formerly head of the bacteriology department of Hillcrest Baptist Hospital, Waco, has been named chief medical technologist at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

Don Francis, CMH administrator, said, "We feel fortunate in obtaining the services of Mr. Baugh. He comes to us highly recommended and' promises to be a welcome addition to our already competent laboratory staff."

Baugh, a native of Texas, attended high school in Massena, N.Y., and took his higher education at Temple Junior College, Temple, and

was graduated from Baylor University at Waco.

The new chief technologist, who was head of the Hillcrest bacteriology department for three years, is married. He and his wife, Jo Ann, live in Boise, Idaho. Baugh said their spare time is somewhat devoted to refinishing antiques and growing houseplants. They brought 30 from Texas, "along with a cat, a parakeet and tropical fish," Baugh added.

Their arrival in Boise Valley coincided with the current unseasonable weather, but Baugh said, "It suits me just fine. I like the colder climate." However, he said he would have accepted the position at Caldwell Memorial Hospital whatever the area weather. "In my field," he said "a goal is to become chief medical technologist, so when the opportunity came to join the staff of a fine hospital in that position, well, I took it."

Note — Joe's wife, Jo Ann, is the daughter of Brother and Sister Laths Navratil of Temple and the granddaughter of Brother and Sister Rudolph Lasikar of Lodge 47, and the late Charles Navratil who was a director of the Supreme Lodge, SPJST, and officer and sales representative for Lodge 24 in Cyclone for many years. Brother Ladis is following in his father's footsteps, working for the SPJST; he is the financial secretary and sales representative for Lodge 87 in Temple and was one of the top sales representatives in 1974. The whole family are members of Lodge 87, Temple.

From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Members: During the May 4th meeting, the youth of our lodge fulfilled their duties honoring mothers without being reminded of the obligations; it was a jovial moment to observe that each assignment was handled accordingly and punctually.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Twitty, both professionals, graciously enter tained our honorees. Their selective vocal and instrumental numbers were presented magnificently.

All of us thoroughly enjoyed sharing the afternoon with them.

Youth Club President Darlene Zahirniak read a "Mother's Day" poem by Edgar A. Guest, which was appropriate for the occasion.

Special prizes by the club were awarded to: Sister Rosie Cocek, oldest mother; Sister Agnes Mynar, mother of the most children; and Sister Shirley Willenborg, the youngest mother.

An evening like the one we observed Sunday, would not be complete without snacks, drinks, including a delicious cake that was brought by Sister Mona Zahirniak, my assistant. Thank you, from all of us!

Permission was granted to us from the mother lodge to allow us to hold a slumber party on May 28th. The youth leader also advised the lodge officers to advise our city officials who protect the lodge's premises, of our activities in order to avoid confusion. Each club member was instructed on what to bring and what is expected of them, especially those who never attended a slumber party before.

This year the leader appointed two extra youth assistants, Agnes Mynar and Bonnie Pavlas, because the club keeps growing and more supervision will be needed from time to time; especially when the teens and juniors will be divided into separate groups.

My congratulations are expressed at this time to all our elected youth club officers who will serve, during the 1975-76 term and, we, the leaders, look forward to another productive year with much continued interest and anticipation.

LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Members, I enjoyed our last youth club meeting because we honored our mothers for their special day, and we wanted to show them that we cared.

Our special guests, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Twitty, presented a few songs on their accordions. Darlene Zahirniak read a poem "Mother's Day" by Edgar A. Guest.

Mr. Twitty was my teacher while I went to the Little Academy in West, and Mrs. Twitty taught me in the first grade. .

The club is very proud to announce that Darlene Zahirniak was elected District III Youth Club Reporter at the recent district meeting held in Dallas.

Belated congratulations are extended to Lodges 35 and 66, for their first District III Youth Club Volleyball Tournament Championships. Those in attendance that day will admit that the youth from Lodges 84 and 130 also excelled in fine play in the final competition. True enough, it was a. good competition, however, all in fun. Even the adults enjoyed themselves.

By the way, at our last youth club meeting we were privileged to have two visitors: Donuska and Stefan Samovsky, from Washington, D. C. We made them welcome and invited them for our social.

June 1st is the date of our next meeting with the new officers in charge for further planning. The Telephone Committee shall be helpful to keep the members posted on the numerous functions, some that are in the planning stages. Remember, in June we honor fathers and a guest speaker who will participate in the club meeting, was added to our program. I shall be counting on your participation for another full year.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Members, Lodge No. 54, West Youth Club held their monthly meeting on May 4th. In our meeting we elected officers. We asked for permission from the mother lodge to allow the youth club to have a slumber party at the lodge on May 28th. Permission was given to us to hold our party on the said date.

For Father's Day we are putting on a skit and the club will furnish the refreshments.

After our meeting we served refreshments of cake, chips, dip and soda pop.

President Mary Jo Dluhos called the meeting to order. The pledge was led by Yvonne Krpec and Monica Krpec led the prayer.

Under old . business we discussed our Stanley Party which was held on April 29.

Our guest speaker was Miss Mary Mrnustik. Mrs. Annie Mae Merta congratulated all of us on a fine job we did on our bread flowers.

There were thirty-six members, ten mothers, and one visitor, Lori Treumer, present.

The president read thank-you notes from Miss Mary Mrnustik and Mrs. Jerome Dorotik.

Door prize winners were Robert Krpec, Chris Krpec, Russell Zboril, Linda Treumer, Jeanne Dorotik and Mary Jo Dluhos.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth, in behalf of our en tire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the be reaved family of our departed lodge brother, JOSEPH MARTINEK, who passed away April 24th, 1975, at his home, 3028 Mohawk Trail, Lake Worth, at 11:30 p.m., very suddenly, at the age of 55 years.

Rosary was held at 7 p.m. Friday at Biggers Funeral Chapel, and Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 am. Saturday, at the St. Paul Catholic Church. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Fort Worth.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Ruby Martina of Lake Worth; a daughter, Barbara Jo Martinek of San Diego, California; his mother, Mrs. Betty Martinek; a sister, Mrs. Anna Mae George of Fort Worth; one niece and one nephew.

IVIELNAR, of the Bila, Hora Community, who passed away at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2nd in the Renger Memorial Hospital, at the age of 89 years.

Brother Melnar was a wellknown farmer and rancher. He re-. tired some years ago when his health began to fail. He was a native of Lavaca County being born in the Vsetin Community northeast of Hallettsville. He married the former Miss Tracy Janus on November 15, 1910, at Vsetin.

Brother Melnar was an active member of the SPJST lodge while his health permitted.

The body lay in state at the Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville until 3:15 on Thursday afternoon, April 3, when it was moved to the Vsetin CMB Church for services, with Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating. Interment was in Vsetin Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, a resident of Hallettsville Rest Home; three sons, August, Charlie and Henry Melnar; a grandchild, and two great - grandchildren. One brother, Anton Melnar, also survivors in the Vsetin Community.

Three brothers and a daughter preceded him in death, namely Vine, Frank and Emil Melnar and daughter, Viola.

Dr. William Welch, a landscape horticulturist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, says there are several types of privacy screens suitable for backyards.

"It is important that the screen you choose blends in with the overall design of your landscape," emphasizes the Texas A&M University System specialist.

"A fence of pine, redwood or cedar makes a good screen and

provides privacy as soon as it is completed. Brick, stone or concrete blocks may also be used. A fence should be sturdy and attractive and blend into the scenery."

The main disadvantage of ' building a fence is the high cost of construction.

"Plant screens," says Welch, "not only provide privacy but also help reduce noise and air pollution."

Although a plant screen takes longer to provide privacy, it is generally much cheaper than a fence and does not require maintenance, points out the horticulturist.

He offers a few pointers for put-

fing in a plant screen.

"Provide plenty of room for plants to grow and be sure they are suited to the area. Consider the soil type, drainage and the amount of sun available to the plants.

"Plant a lot of one type of plant rather than many different kinds of plants in one area.

"A combination frame and Vine screen makes a good privacy block.

"Vines growing on a wooden frame covered with non-climable welded wire make a colorful screen and require little space."

Welch suggects vines such as English Ivy or Carolina Jasmine.

ITEMS OF INTEREST HIGH CEILINGS MARE EXTRA ROOM POSSIBLE

High ceilings make an extra room possible for the family who cannot afford more costly remodeling, a housing and home furnishings specialist suggests.

Addition of overhead galleries, lofts and balconias are some of the ways a family can use exceptionally high ceilings in both old and new houses for more space," explains Mrs. Jane Berry with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

"Adding a gallery, loft or balcony — instead of another full story —

uses only a small portion of overhead space.

"That way, the family can retain the home's spacious feeling and achieve a really unique architectural feature, while, perhaps easing the space 'crunch.'

"Few new homes today are built with galleries or lofts, because architects tend to think it more thrifty and sensible to build a full second story," the specialist observed.

"However, when homes with twostory rooms are remodeled, sometimes a gallery or loft can solve an architectural problem or create new space.

"When the rooms of town houses are made into• apartments, for example, very tall rooms often are given a sleeping gallery or a dining kitchen gallery.

"And roomy Victorian houses with high ceilings can be remodeled easily to include such features."

The specialist also pointed to a feeling of "spaciousness, flow and elegant detachment" achieved with a gallery or loft, because it provides space set off from the rest of a room.

Concerning functions of a gallery, loft or balcony, Mrs. Berry said each structure is suitable for use as a study, playroom, dining or sleeping room, library or storage area.

"This new space also adds to house, while it gives the family more room," the specialist said.

We May See Vintage Wines Made in Texas Texas has considerable potential for producing commercial wine grapes according to preliminary research results.

Growth of U. S. wine consumption, and its resultant interest in grape growing here, justified expanding grape research. If wine grapes could be successfully produced in Texas, they would provide a significant new source of income.

Possibilities vary widely in the state according to Ron Perry, Experiment Station horticulture researcher. "Injurious temperatures and diseases seem to be the primary limiting factors to successful grape growing in Texas," Perry says. But hail, wrong soil type, poor water quality or lack of water can also limit grape growing in some parts of the state.

Diseases such as Pierce's disease and cotton root rot are major drawbacks to grape growing in some parts of Texas, according to Perry.

No feasible control has yet been found for either disease.

At present, where Pierce's disease is a problem, growers can set out southeastern muscadine varieties such as Hunt, Scuppernong, Pride and a few American bunch grapes known to be resistant.

Researchers are working to

develop other varieties tolerant to Pierce's disease.

Sites with a known history of root rot should be avoided.

However, if such sites are used, resistant varieties may help; additional research is needed for confirmation.

The major diseases attacking foliage and fruit of grapes growing in Texas are powdery mildew, downey mildew, black rot and anthracnose.

These diseases are controllable with fungicide spray programs. The occurrence and seriousness of the infestation of each disease largely depends upon grape varieties and location. Without control, normal vine growth and yields may be seriously reduced.

And there are many insects in Texas capable of attacking the grapevine and its fruit, TAES research shows. The most potentially hazardous ones are the grape leafhopper, the grape leaf folder, June beetle and western grape leaf skeletonizer.

Insects can be controlled by applying insecticides at the times recommended. But research shows increased effectiveness in control is helped by disposing of rubbish and fallen leaves in vineyards.

Station and the Extension Service are testing several grape varieties in various parts of the state. These varieties will be judged for yield and quality of fermented and unfermented juice.

Potential of grape production in Texas looks good. We know they can be grown here; they have been in the past.

In earlier days, Texas had as many as 30 Class B wineries; Del Rio has the only commercial one today. (A Class B winery grows all its own grapes. A Class A winery buys all or most of its grapes from other vineyards.)

Now, let's focus on one area of Texas and see what's being done there. A great deal of interest in wine grape production has developed in the South Plains area.

According to Dr. William Lipe, plant physiologist at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station (TAES) at Lubbock, there are three organized groups in the area making tentative plans for wineries in the next few years.

About 50,000 vines of several varieties were planted in.1974.

The Lubbock Center began trials on grapes in 1968 in response to and in cooperation with the Abernathy Chamber of Commerce. This research has expanded until there are 250 varieties under observation at Abernathy and at TAES, Lubbock. The Abernathy test planting now has about 21/2 acres. A new one-acre planting was made at the Lubbock Center in 1974 with 60 varieties on two rootstocks. Smaller test plantings have been made at Welch and Ropesville.

Lipe says that although some varieties (mostly fresh market and processing) have been in production 3 or 4 years, most of the wine types came into production for the first time in 1973 and 1974.

The research program at TAES Lubbock involves variety evaluation (wine, fresh market, and processing), irrigation systems, hail protection, and weed control.

Thus far, research shows that several grape varieties are beginning to stand out with regard to yield and juice quality. It has been shown that commercial yields are attainable and that juice characteristics for a potential wine industry are acceptable.

Comparison of Texas areas to wine-producing regions of California suggests that bulk and standard table wines and high quality dessert wines can be produced in Texas.

If grape production problems in the state can be solved so growers greatly expand production, it can be a strong economic boost to the state. And along with wine grape growing, we'll probably see expanded production of table and juicing grapes.

Who knows, we may one day see a "Texas Champanel 1983" as a much soughtafter vintage wine.
