On our front page we publish a

photo of four of our members who are responsible for our continuous growth in membership and insurance sales. Congratulations are due them all!

We wish to correct a misquote we made in our editorial on page 1, column 3, second paragraph: We quoted SL Vice President Hejny (as saying, "DSR Zatopek was the top DSR in the state of Texas .. . etc." It should have read, "DSR Zatopek was No. 1 SR in District II, naturally, by virtue of his being District II DSR." We regret the misquote.

He is no longer with us. Tuesday night, March 4, at 9:15 p.m., Sister Pauline Shiller called us from Rowena, Texas, to tell us the sad news that her father, the well-known Dr. J. J. Shiller, had died that afternoon. Naturally, we were saddened to hear the sad news; we had somehow hoped and indeed felt he would reach the century mark in years lived upon this earth. She asked if your editor could fulfill a promise made to Dr. Shiller nearly 20 years ago when we said we would deliver the eulogy and officiate at his funeral.

Could a person refuse such a request from this gracious and deserving lady, who is held in the highest esteem and respect, not only by your editor and family, but by all who know her and who knew her wonderful father, a nonegotistic and respected man, who was laid to rest on Thursday, March 6th, at 4 p.m. . .

If your editor tried to say all there could be said good about Dr. Shiner -- his accomplishments and his life of honorable service to his state, county, and fellow mankind -- it would fill a book!

If ego, vanity, or conceit were words known to him, and surely they were, he just did not know how to practice them, and he never did practice them!

Here we must pay tribute to his devoted daughter, Miss Pauline Shiller, who devoted her life to her beloved father, especially after her mother's death — and that your editor did, publicly, in the services, in behalf of our SPJST Society.

Devotion such as hers is seldom found, especially in this day and time.

We have parted with a longtime member, a devoted doctor, citizen, neighbor and friend who has left a monument and an example for all of us, for all time May honor and respect be his now and alwaysA very condensed summary of his life's history follows.

County where they remained for seven years. From Moravia they moved to Victoria, where he established an office, but due to his wife's health, they moved to west Texas where his wife recovered and they lived until her death on July 16, 1930.

He moved to Rowena in 1913 and being a registered pharmacist, opened a drug store in 1915. He later sold the drug store to his brother, Joseph F. Shiller, a graduate pharmacist in 1924, where they both remained until their retirement in 1959. Dr. Shiller was 82 years old at the time of his retirement.

A close personal life-long friend, C. W. Kopecky, who had known Dr. Shiller since 1916, recalled his many years of devotion to his patients, no matter who they were, because Dr. Shiller considered "human life was human life." He was very loyal and attentive to his patients at all times, disregarding weather, road conditions, and even his own health. All this made him the greatest of doctors.

Dr. Shiller was a member of the Woodmen of the World, which, in 1952, presented him with a plaque and citation for almost 40 years of service as a general practitioner to this community. He was also a charter member of the Rowena Lions Club, and in 1973, the year he celebrated his 96th birthday, they presented him with a plaque in recognition of outstanding community service. He also was a member of the American Medical Assn., the Texas Medical Assn., the Masons, who presented him a 50year pin in 1967, and the SPJST. He received a 50-year pin from our Society in 1954. In May of 1973, SPJST Lodge No. 49, Rowena, held open house at the lodge to pay tribute and congratulate Dr. J. J. Shiller for having outlived the actuarial table of his insurance policy. He was the twenty-second member of the SPJST to have lived past his 96th birthday since the Society's organization in 1897, in La Grange, Texas.

In 1971 Dr. Shiller donated his office equipment, medical library and medical saddlebags to the museum at the newly built Supreme Lodge building in Temple.

With this gift to the museum, he left a historic legacy — a reminder of the strength it took to build

DR. J. J. MULLER (1973) Dr. J. J. Shiller, son of Joseph H. Shiller and Rosalie Jirasek Shiller, was born near Rice's. Crossing in Williamson County on February 23, 1877 and spent his youth on a farm near Austin. His schooling began in a one-room building with about forty pupils and one teacher. After he finished Austin Academy, he entered the Medical Department of the University of Texas at Galveston. In the fall of 1900 he transferred to Tulane University in Louisiana where he graduated in 1903.

Dr. Shiller started his practice in Victoria County where his parents had moved in 1897. In 1902, he married Miss Annie Louise Shiller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Shiller of Victoria. He then moved to Praha, Texas, where earning a living was difficult and he moved to Moravia, in Lavaca

3 this nation. These mark the warm memories Dr. Shiller had of his 56 years of serving the people of Texas He is survived by his daughter, Miss Pauline Shiller, a brother, Joseph F. Shiller of Rowena, and many nieces and nephews.

The local Masonic lodge conducted the graveside services.

NEWSBRIEFS District V Director Brother Ernest Hanka is a patient' in a Houston hospital. * * Brother Alfred Hilsher, Lodge 88, is a patient in a Houston hospital SYD Sister Dorothy Massey attended a Human Development Program workshop in San Antonio February 28th to March 2nd. The workshop was sponsored by the Foundation for Educational Skills of Dallas and was aimed toward working with school-age children to develop their awareness, selfconfidence and social effectiveness, and to enable a leader to help young people develop socially in today's society. The entire program works toward the selfunderstanding and the fulfillment of young people. The workshop was attended by approximately 90 people from all over the state.

Dr. J. J. Shiller, 98, patriarch of West Texas physicians, passed away in a San Angelo hospital on Tuesday afternoon, March 4th. He was 98 on February 23rd. Funeral services were held in Ballinger from the Allen-Davis Funeral Home on Thursday, March 6th.

Dr. Shiller had been a member of the SPJST '71 years, having originally joined SPJST Lodge No. 32 in Victoria on May 13th, /904. On July 2, 1928, he transferred to Lodge No. 49, in Rowena. Dr. Shiller had been paid his endowed certificate in May of 1973, upon reaching the age of 96. Dr. Shiller began practicing medicine in Victoria in 1903 and retired in 1959 at the age of 82. Dr. Shiller leaves an historic legacy to the SPJST and to the state which he served for so long in the form of his entire medical library, instruments, supplies and equipment to the SPJST Museum in Temple. Dr. Shiller visited the museum for the last time in early April 1974, along with his daughter, Pauline.

LODGE. 18 (JAN iItICA) ELGIN HOLDS FORMAL GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONIES Tuesday, February 25th, was a beautiful day and approximately 100 members, guests, and interested spectators turned out for the ground-breaking ceremonies on the west side of Elgin adjoining Hwy. 95. The site of the new building is a five-acre tract owned by Leslie Gustafson, and is on a gentle slope

toward the west from the highway.

Three heavy equipment operators were busy moving dirt on the slope, the crest of which will be the site for the new lodge home of Lodge 18. These ceremonies climaxed several months of intense activity and hard work on the part of many people in Lodge 18. After a good many years of inactivity and dormancy, a small nucleus of the membership decided that Lodge )8

could indeed be an active lodge of the SPJST, and have tremendous growth potential with a new lodge building. In the last 18 months, the membership has grown from approximately 30 members to 200, and this can be attributed for the most part to the prospects of a new lodge home. Once again, this proves that a lodge having new or nice facilities attracts new members. Comments were made that after this publicity on the groundbreaking and the community of Elgin sees actual work taking place that the membership will grow even faster. The Elgin area and the new lodge home show great potential and promise for success.

It is anticipated that the lodge home will draw interest and attendance from the Austin-BastropRound Rock-Pflugerville-GiddingsLexington-Smithyille areas.

The enthusiasm and energy of the Elgin membership is very great; you can sense this feeling in mingling with the members.

Everyone is putting their shoulder to the wheel behind this common effort. The community of Elgin is supporting this project because the building will be a distinct asset to the community as well as Lodge 78. there being no comparable facility in this area. 5 The lodge leadership and members are certainly to be commended for this momentous step and decision. The Supreme Lodge and other prominent individuals have been involved in the activities of the lodge for some time, but this is another and longer chapter, all of which will be related in detail on the date of the dedication of the new hall, which should be some time in the summer or early fall at the latest, weather permitting and all other things being equal. As has been the case with other new lodge construction in the past few years, Lodge 1,8 has many members competent in various trades, businesses and crafts. A tremendous amount of know-how lies with the membership.

(We regret that District I Director John Kubena and District Sales Representative Lad Zatopek were unable to be nresent for the ground-breaking ceremonies due to out-of-the area commitments that day).

A number of those present were treated to a very nice snack and refreshments after the groundbreaking ceremonies at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elnil Mogonye.

This was enjoyed and appreciated by everyone.

In 1973, he attended Charles University in Czechoslovakia with a group of fellow A&M students to further study the Czech language.

He has taught Czech courses at Temple Junior College under the administration of Professor Calvin Chervenka and is presently teaching at Taylor High School and studying at Texas A&M University for his master's degree.

Brother Mikeska showed that he cared and believed in the future of the Czech language being taught at various colleges when he traveled a great distance to support the presentation of Lodge No. 88's Czech play, "Ponocny Stoura, Po Lasce Mzoura." This play was presented especially for the many students studying the Czech language at various high schools and colleges throughout Texas.

Several weeks ago, he was the principal speaker at the 75th anniversary of Lodge No. 29, Taylor.

David Mikeska is also the secretary of the CESAT organization (Exstudents of the Czech Language).

We salute all Czech instructors in our state who are contributing to the cause of our Czech language!

Also, last year, at the end of the fall semester, I notified our Dean and Dept. Head that I would be retiring from teaching after our return from Praha, Ally 15. I am tired. After 39 years of teaching, I do not wish to end my career like my brother John (who died very suddenly). At least I hope that I will have a few years to live in a relaxed manner, and not under constant pressure. Naturally, I sincerely hope that we can get a good replacement and that the Czech language program will not only hold its own but grow and grow.

ALVIN JUNIOR COLLEGE Alvin Junior College has recently received a $100 grant from the Supreme Lodge, Slavonia Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST), to be used in funding Czechoslovakian language classes.

The check was sent by Br. Nick A. Morris, president of the SL, who stated that it is a policy of SPJST to grand junior colleges $100 annually toward the teaching of Czech language courses.

According to Mr. Morris, "The SPJST is happy to support instruction in the Czech language at Alvin Junior College. The Czech language is being taught in more institutions in Texas than at any time in the past two or three decades, and it appears that interest in this critical language is on the increase."

Czechoslovakian is the third most commonly spoken language in Texas.

State Field Manager Silas Smith and Sister Ludmila Bonus, who turned 92 years young on Nov. 25, 1974, and has been a member of Lodge No. 26, Skidmore, since October 21, 1906. She is also the mother of Lodge 66 President Emil Hanus of Waco.

March 18 is the final day for this second term, and the class is patiently waiting for September to roll around. It is really electrifying to see the interest the students have.

A few weeks ago, Brother Silas Smith, SFM, and his wife, Jeanette, were in District VII calling on sales representatives along with Sister Tillie Valchar, District VII Sales Representative. They visited Sister Edna Bohac, who is a sales representative, and a member of Lodge 26, Skidmore.

Sister Bohac's mother makes her home with her. She is Sister Ludmila Harms. Sister Hanus was 92 years young last November 25.

She is also a member of Lodge 26, and has been a member of SPJST since October 21, 1906, almost 69 years. She is the mother of eight children, has 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She is the mother of Brother Emil Hanus, president of Lodge No. 66, Waco.

Sister Hanus speaks only Czech, and Brother Smith, only English, but they became good friends and with the help of Sister Bohac, they made themselves understood to one another.

I might add the lady does not look her age. She is a darling!

After hearing committee reports, Brother Clifton Martinets was awarded a plaque for being in the Application-a-Month Club. Brother Martinets has written at least one policy per month for 86 consecutive months.

We voted to have our lodge picnic on Sunday, May 31st. We will plan the picnic at next month's meeting; also next month, following the meeting, there will be a free supper. We' would like to invite all members to attend.

Wednesday, March 12, 1975 DISTRICT V MEETING Dear Members, Don't forget that it is this Sunday that our district has its meeting at Needville with Lodge No 81 as hosts. The meeting will start at 11 a.m. and will recess for dinner — a very good dinner of barbecued beef and sausage with all the trimmings!

NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: I feel sa fortunate to be able to attend the regular monthly meeting after not being able to attend the past couple of months, due to wet, cold weather and bad roads. Today, I feel more like writing and will hurriedly get this done before the mailman comes.

There was so much progress being made during our absence and a lot of new projects planned for the near future! Mainly, the expansion of our Lodge '74 from the back side, where are the meeting rooms, dressing rooms, larger stage and a beautiful fireplace made from petrified wood (a local product). It's so nice to know we have local skill to put same to use. The recreation (youth) room will be having some changes made since there was a need for an arts and crafts room, so part of it will come to good use for that purpose.

The past Saturday night dance was well attended with everyone enjoying the professional music Sounds; and they are wanted back by our youth, so the band is scheduled to play at the Lodge 74 dances on March 21st and 22nd. If you miss them, you really are missing one of the best bands! The Ted Hardin band is from Brownsville.

On March 29th, there will be another benefit dance with the proceeds going to the Crockett Fire Department. All volunteer firemen and their families are invited and will be treated to free admission. There will be a special place for parking the fire equipment in readiness if needed for emergency, so it will be possible for all fire department members to attend this special night with one of the best bands entertaining; and I must note, it will be formal. Teofil Halama of the University of Houston and members of his Czech class; Prof. William Soucek from Alvin showed up with 14 students, and Stanley Valcik, who is studying Czech in College Station, represented Texas A&M University.

Our friends from Dallas, Seaton, and Temple came by bus. Others arrived by car from La Grange, Wharton and Austin, to mention a few.

Mrs. Edward Taborsky, Austin, expressed her thanks for the invitation, but was unable to attend. Mrs. Vlasta Splawn of Texas Tech University, Lubbock, was snow-bound and her plane could not take off.

The president of our Supreme Lodge Brother Nick Morris and his wife were also present. His encouraging words and assistance always come when we need that proverbial shot in the arm. Thanks again.

Secretary Frank Cocek was called upon to lead the assembly in the pledge of allegiance.

Brother Cocek then read the minutes of the previous meeting.

After a minor correction, the minutes were approved.

Lodge President Brother Zahirniak welcomed the membership and recognized the Bob Wright family who transferred recently to our lodge here in West where Brother Wright is on the faculty of the

A cordial welcome was extended to them, and we hope to see them frequently at the lodge's functions.

Financial Secretary and Treasurer Raymond Hruska gave an itemized report of the mortuary dues.

President Zahirniak reported on the lodge building operation which was taken care of, namely: the repair in the kitchen, on some needed interior painting, and exterior painting of the front entrance, which gives the lodge home a very neat appearance. He further stated that other matters will be handled later on in the year.

Brother Zahirniak then read the names of the applicants for membership in Lodge No. 54: Pamala Ann Kucera, daughter of SR Brother Frank Kucera and Sister Kucera; Terry Michael Wright, Theresa Rose Wright, and Frank Castro, a conversion policy.

Youth Leader Maxine Sefcik presented a comprehensive report of the youth club's activities. The many functions scheduled for the youth, will stimulate interest and attract prospective members for a community gathering. A nice, collected sum on the quilt project before the meeting, was mentioned.

An Easter egg hunt for the juniors was supervised by the teens with a large number of youngsters participating. There were five prizes given to the winners, who were introduced by the youth leader.

Sister Sefcik also mentioned the Statewide Youth Leaders' Training Seminar to be held May 3 and 4 at Camp Val Verde.

Happy birthday greetings were extended to March celebrants, Brother George Kacir, and Carol Mynar, daughter of Brother and Sister Joe Mynar. Carol is one of our very active members of the youth club.

Brother Johnnie Popp was the only member reported on the sick list. We wish him good health.

It was so nice to have Sister Bennie Soukup among us at the meeting, after a lengthy absence due to her illness.

Before the meeting adjourned, the door prize was drawn and the winner was Sister Maxine Sefcik; she in turn donated the money to the quilt project. We thank her for her thoughtfulness.

I wish to also notify all of our

VESTNIK members that after the April 6th meeting, we will have free refreshments because one of our members will donate the refreshments (a cold keg), so come to the meeting, brothers and sisters, and begin taking interest and part in your lodge; it is yours and mine!

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters, Well, the Czech play is over, but you'll be pleased to know that the directors are already planning to present another one this year.

Also, the English play "Healthy, Wealthy, and Dumb" will be repeated this year The date is tentatively set for May 4th. There will be more information later.

And speaking of plays, the Teen Club will present a three-act mystery-comedy, "How Betsy. Butted In," on Easter Sunday, March 30.

An Easter egg hunt will be held for the children at 2 p.m. and the play will begin at 3. Admission will be $1 per person and the youth will serve a supper in the kitchen at 5 p.m. Please come out and support these fantastic youth.

They and Mrs. Marceil Malak and Mrs. Mary Sanderson have worked very hard on this play, and I know you will enjoy the day.

The youth club had a great time at the rodeo Sunday, March 2nd.

The events were great and Charlie Rich was the main attraction. It seems that Charlie Rich has some ardent fans in the youth club. Everyone had a great time and we would like to thank the lodge for sponsoring us. Also, we would like to thank King Hegwood and Bill Malak for popping some popcorn for us, and the youth leaders for sacking it for us. Thanks a bunch!

We really have some hard-working members in our lodge. The

13 Saturday before the Czech play, Louis Hanus, Joe Elzner, Willie and Gary Wehring, Richard and Mark Wahlberg, Norval Crossman, Merlin Sanitz, Sarge Allison and Frank Tilich washed down and cleaned the parking lot and trimmed the bushes in the flower bed. Also, Frances Crossman helped decorate the ballroom for the play. Thank you folks for caring and for your hard work.

Also, the next week, A. J. Stayton, Willie and Gary Wehring and Karl Lindemann repaired the holes in our parking lot.. I thank you gentlemen and my car and its tires and shocks also thank you.

Steve and Estelle Kelly celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on February 23. Our entertainment chairman, Harley Cox, thought that it would be cute for the band to play, "Please Release Me," as a joke and the band obliged. Noel and Wanda Kennedy had a fantastic time in San Francisco.

Alfred 'Usher is still in poor condition at Memorial Downtown Hospital and Ernie Hanka took suddenly ill and was rushed to Twelve Oaks Hospital. Mrs. Hanka had just returned from the hospital herself and couldn't ride with him in the ambulance, so Karl Lindemann was kind enough to accompany him. We hope he recovers quickly and is home soon. Also Mickey Rice had to return to the hospital for the third time just recently. I do hope that she gets better very soon.

I am sad to report that Mr. Henry Burford passed away on February 27th. He fought a long bout with a respiratory infection and finally succumbed to it. I would like to personally thank the youth assistants for providing the Saturday dinner for the family. Our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family. Mr. Burford is survived by his wife, Beverly, who is a youth assistant; daughter, Mrs. Richard (Linda) Wren, and son, Billy, who is the current lodge prince and a LIT. Don't forget the youth play coming up March 30, at 3 p.m.

The Hlahol Dramatic Club of Lodge 88, Houston, has encouraged the Youth Club of 88 to present an all-teen-cast mystery comedy.

The three act play will take place in the Chandelier Ballroom on Easter Sunday, March 30th, at 3 P.m.

Some of the questions asked in "How Betsy Butted In" are: "What was the fear that Emma Barnes (played by Arlene Mala,k) shared with her housekeeper?" "Why had her son, Eddie, fled in despair?"

"Why was the hired girl (played

by Mary Horelica) scared out of her wits?" "What was the mystery of the secret room?" For all the answers to these and many more questions come see "How Betsy Butted In." The day will begin with the annual Easter egg hunt for all youngsters under 12 years of age.

Sister Schuetz reported that the youth would be having a kite contest after their meeting. They will go to the rest home on March 11, when they will present their Easter program. Sister Schuetz reminded the youth that YAD is not too far away, and they should begin thinking about their crafts.

The birthdays for March include: Josie Mae Straten, Frank Popp, Jr., and Helen Mynar. Dianne Schroeder brought the birthday cake.

The membership voted to have an Easter party on Sunday, March 23. The youth will present their Easter program, and then there will be an Easter egg hunt followed by a supper prepared by the kitchen committee. The youth will sponsor games after the supper. Everyone is invited to come out and have a good time.

The kitchen committee is selling tickets on a bottle of apricot brandy (donated by Mr. and Mrs. Cyrill Svrcek), a fifth of whiskey (donated by Johnnie Krizan), a painted bird bath (donated by the kitchen committee), bath soap with a brush pin (donated by the youth club). The tickets are five for $1, and the prizes will be given away at the Easter party.

The proceeds will be used to purchase new curtains for the hall.

In her card committee report, Sister Dobecka stated that cards had been sent to the following: birthday Mike Mazanec; getwell — Michael Mynar; anniversary — Mr. and Mrs. Gary Beseda.

Vice President Robert Dobecka then gave the board of trustees' report. The membership voted on and accepted two new members into Lodge No. 6.

The door prize winners were: Andrew Wachsmann ($2), Josie Mae Straten ($7), and George Polansky ($10 — not present).

It was announced by Secretary Melvin Skrabanek that we have four members receiving 50-yeax pins this year. They are Warren C. Bain, Henry W. Matejka, John P. Skrabanek, and William Siptak.

Five new members were accepted into the lodge. They are Aaron Flippin, Evelyn Flippin, Gary Flippin, Dale Barek, and James Courtney.

Under unfinished business, the spring barbecue was discussed. The date for it was set for May 18th, if we can get a band. Discussion on tlie price of drinks was also brought up.

On March 23, the District I spring meeting will be held at New Tabor at 2 p.m. Ladies of the lodge are asked to bring sweets.

LODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH Dear Members: We had a light rain this morning, but were ever so thankful for the beautiful weekend.

We were sorry we didn't have time to announce, in the Vestnik, the date of our ground-breaking for our new lodge home and future home of Sokol Ft. Worth on Sunday, March 2, at 2 p.m. It was a beautiful day in more ways than just the weather.

We had over 130 in attendance and were especially honored to have as our guests, SL President Nick Morris, his wife, Dorothy, and son Michael; SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, District III Director Cyril (Sid) Pokladnik, District III Sales Representative Alvin Nesuda, and his wife, District III Youth Counselor Wilma Nesuda; and Judge Harold Valderas. District Judge Joe Spurlock sent his regrets that he could not attend due to the illness of his wife.

All the officers of Lodge No. 154 and Sokol were acknowledged and our charter Sokol members, Brother and Sister Anton and Frances Tirk.

15 banquet and receive the scholarship that night. We are starting another square dance class on March 26, which will be our third class sponsored by the SPJST. As you know, Lodge 74 is really dedicated to their young people of our lodge so we have decided to have a teenage dance every two or three months. The Beta Sigma Phi have had several of their sorority parties at our SPJST Lodge No. 74.

We are also having a dance on March 29, honoring the 25 volunteer firemen of Crockett and their wives or dates. They have just dedicated their new fire station and held open house to the city of Crockett.

A report from our sales representative, Chester Shmoldas, who had just attended the banquet at Lodge 177 in Academy and brought back a plaque for being the most salesman in the state of Texas.

The president appointed two more trustees for our lodge: Joe D. Burson and Wilson Guidry. We are so proud to have a group of wellqualified men serving as trustees for our Lodge 74.

A recommendation was made to buy wall candles for the lodge.

The motion was made, seconded and approved by the lodge members.

We of Lodge 74 are very proud of our lodge and are looking forward to the expanding and beautiful petrified wood fire place we will have, and a stage 10 x 20 feet for district and state affairs. Our next meeting will be on April 6; we hope there will be a good turnout and we can all share each other's love, friendship and fraternalism for the benefit of our Society.

This is a large project for Lodge 13 to engage in, but with the determination, help and co-operation of all, members concerned, I and the other officers and members feel that this task can be accomplished.

FROM THE PRESIDE'NT'S OFFICt: Net Figures for 1914 And Other Information Dear Members: Now that our annual statement to the Insurance Department in Austin and the actuary's work have been completed, we. can report to you on the net gain figures for 1974, as of 31 December 1974.

1974 was another good year, but not as good as 1973, which set an all-time record. Considering, however, the general depressed economic picture that prevailed during the year, I consider the achievements quite good.

During the past few years, the SPJST has continued in its overall growth, both in membership and insurance in force. Since net gain is the only real measure of a company's growth, I wish to submit that for the year 1974 we had a net gain of 1,017 members and a net increase in insurance of $5,549,811. Compared to other fraternal societies, these figures are quite favorable, especially when you consider the fact that we do business in only the State of Texas. (The net gain figures are arrived at after subtracting the number of lapses, expirys, deaths, surrenders and maturities).

A special tribute for these excellent results goes to the entire Insurance Department and sales

force. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of all district sales representatives and local lodge sales representatives for these fine results. As a matter of fact, the credit for this effort is also extended to all of those in the SPJST who have, in their own way, helped promote the SPJST. All of us are, in fact, "salesmen."

We have a total of 49,448 certificates in force as of 31 December 1974, for a total of $89,808,553 in life insurance coverage, an increase in both categories.

Our assets naw total in excess of $21 million, an increase of 5.99% over last year's 4.67%.

Our solvency ratio stands at 124.48, which constitutes $124.48 for every $100 in liabilities, also an increase.

Our surplus fund for the proteeion of certificateholders is in the mount of $4,176,236.12, an increase wer last year.

Regarding production figures for 1974 (overall before net), we received 3,359 applications (3,666 applications last year) for $12,29'3,235 in life insurance. All seven districts made their quotas for 1974.

The annual net percentage gain in 1974 on our investments was 5.75%, an increase over that of 1973's figure of 5.48%.

All of these figures point up the fact that the SPJST is definitely a big business and has been for a number of years. Our overall financial posture is very stable and sound. I feel that all of us can take credit for this mice growth and I believe that your Supreme Lodge can be credited with some very sound management and good business practices. We have invested wisely and managed your money well. These investments and the overall good management of our resources has kept members' policy costs (premiums) as low as possible. The SPJST enjoys an, enviable reputation among fraternals in Texas, and indeed, among the entire family of fraternal benefit Societies throughout the US. The same quotas have been set for 1975, and with everyone's cooperation we will achieve our goal.

I am confident that we will.

7% Refund to Lodges. The 7% refund to lodges for 1974 amounted to $89,621.13.

Premium Refund. The premium

7 refund checks sent out every month by Financial Secretary Zabcik's department to individual members amounted to $179,246.66 for 1974, plus $3,108.80 to the lodges for postage for handling these premium refund checks, per Art. 36y of our by-laws.

District Youth Fund. The checks for this fund will be distributed to the district treasurers in the coming spring district meetings. This is the fund that is paid on the basis of 15c for every certificate in the district held by those 16 and over as of 31 December 1914, per Article 53g of our by-laws. The complete figures. for this fund appear at the end of this report.

Camp Fund Allocation.'The camp fund allocation to each district is being computed and will soon be sent to the district youth counselors. SYD Sister Massey will have these figures in the Vestnik. This is the fund that is received by the district youth counselors, Is controlled by them, and is disbursed by them. A district audit committee is to audit this fund and to report to the membership at least once a year.

District General Expense Fund.

The Supreme Lodge contributes the sum of $150 a year to the General Expense Fund of each district, as set forth in Article 53h of the by-laws. This is the by-law that was passed in the last convention and we hope it is of some help to the district officers in defraying their expenses in conducting official business within their district.

Progress With New Lodge Buildings. It has been our privilege and honor to attend recent groundbreaking ceremonies for two new lodge homes: that of Lodge 13, Elgin, on February 25th and that of Lodge 154, Fort Worth, on March 2nd. In the case of Lodge 18, dirt work by heavy equipment had already been started and by the time this report is read, the concrete slab will probably haVe been poured. In the case of Lodge 154. the concrete slab was in place and construction continuing. (Pictures from both of these activities will be in the Vestnik shortly). In addition, Lodge 13, Dime Box, has submitted a loan application for a new lodge building in Dime Box, and grdund-ibreaking ceremonieS there will 'be taking place soon, There are other lodges in the

18 process of planning and discussing new lodge buildings, and we will probably be hearing from them in the coming weeks and months.

It is interesting that, in .the case of Lodges 13 and 18, that we are talking about two charter lodges of the SPJST dating back to 1897 which, after a period of inactivity and a degree of dormancy, have "come back to life" and have embarked on ambitious building programs. The officers and members of these lodges have become convinced that one of the ways to grow is to have a nice lodge building to attract the present membership and new membership. This has been proven again and again, and they are to be congratulated for their foresight. So, as things stand now, we can almost certainly count on dedication ceremonies of three new lodge buildings before the year is out. How all of this came to be and why it happened is another story that will unfold before and during the dedication ceremonies. It has been a privilege and distinct . pleasure working with the district directors concerned and the officers and members of these lodges in planning this progress. These lodges can thus look forward to good increases in membership; in fact, it is already happening.

Finally, these thoughts: The present moment is the only moment we can live in. The past comes with us, it is true, but we cannot live in it. The future is before us and we must aim our lives toward it.

Maturity is patience; it is the willingness to pass up immediate pleasure in favor of the long-term gain. Maturity is also the art of living in peace with that which we cannot change.

You are not a "customer" in the SPJST. You own it because you are a member. You are not dependent on us; we are dependent on you. You are not an interruption of our work; you are the purpose of it. Our service is not a favor; you favor us by letting us serve you. Thank you for being members of the SPJST! The dates and locations of these workshops are as follows: Saturday, March 15 — American Legion Hall, Hallettsville; go north to the hall in the City Park on either North Main or La Grange Streets. (Hosted by Lodge No. 4).

We are asking, and the host lodges have agreed, to prepare the cold buffet and refreshments, all at the expense of the Supreme Lodge.

We are generally following the same procedure and schedule that we followed last year, which turned out to be very successful. If one of the above locations is not convenient for the officers of a particular lodge on the date scheduled, they would be free to attend a workshop at one of the other two locations; however, mileage would still be paid for one car only from each lodge at any one of the three locations.

Anyone else wishing to attend these workshops, other than those mentioned here, is welcome to do so at his own expense.

The purpose of these workshops is threefold: 1) Pass on information to the local lodge officers so that they might better serve their membership, and 2) Exchange ideas and hear some of the problems that the local lodges are having in some of the areas of servicing their members, 3) And, of course, these workshops will build better relations among all of us and we will get to know each other better. All of us are going to learn through these workshops.

We hope that the officers who were unable to attend last year nave already made plans to attend this year. We will be looking for you.

FIFTY-YEAR MEMBERS POSSIBLE OMISSIONS Dear Members, It is possible that some members who should have received their 50year pins were omitted from the list of 50-year members that was recently published in the Vestnik.

This would only apply to those members who joined the SPJST in 1925 or earlier and then later exchanged their certificates for different certificates.

In the 1920s and 1930s, when a member exchanged his certificate, his old admission date was dropped and the new records then appeared as if the member was joining the SPJST for the first time.

For example, if a member joined in 1925, he is entitled to receive a 50-year pin this year, but if he exchanged that certificate for another certificate in 1935, our current record will show that he should get a 50-year pin in 1985, when actually he should be getting the pin this year.

To pick up all of these omissions and find the correct date of admission, we would have to go through the individual files of most of the members over age 50 which would involve checking near 14,000 files. This would take a staff of several people perhaps months.

If you joined the SPJST in 1925 or earlier, and later exchanged your certificate, please let us know and we will check your individual file to see if you are entitled to a 50-year-membership pin.

From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Members: The youth club held their meeting on March 2nd after the mother lodge meeting with a good attendance, and we had one visitor, La Verne Kruger. We were glad to have you at the meeting.

The youth club selected their king, queen, duke and duchess, who will represent our lodge at the District III YAD in June. The group consists of: King — Douglas Uptmor Queen — Joyce Wachsmann Duke — Darrell Uptmor Duchess — Shirley Dobecka.

We are very proud of you!

We also talked about the crafts and talents for the YAD. I hope

There were seventeen youth who entered the kite-flying contest and I believe they all were flying kites: that was very pretty and all of the children had fun. The winners in the contest were: Joyce Wachsmarm — prettiest Darrell Uptmor — smallest Karen Hykel — best homemade Kathy Brem — highest flying The judges were Brothers Willie Helona, George Straten and Fred Monthie. Thank you brothers for judging the contest for us.

Our Valentine Marty on February 14 was well attended. Everyone had fun playing games and playing the record player. We also had all kinds of goodies to eat.

Those members donating candy for the Valentine party were: the Robert Dobecka family — jar of peanuts and a box of candy; Andrew Wachstnarnri family — box of candy; Aubrey Uptmor family —box of candy; Sisters Lillie H'rornadka, Martha Monthie; Mary Lander and Christine Svrcek -big box of heart candies; Johnnie Krizan — big box of candy; youth club and yours truly -- doggie with candy and box of candy. We used some of these for door prizes. I want to thank all of you for the Mee donationS. On March 23, the youth will have their program and Easter egg hunt, and the mother lodge will have a fried chicken supper and we will play games after supper. The program will start at 3 p.m.; egg hunt after the program with supper at 5:30 p.m. Everyone try to bring a covered dish to go with the chicken.

The youth club is going to the West Rest Haven on March 11th; everyone come and help us with the program.

On February 28, the youth club played volleyball with Lodge 35, Elk at the Axtell gym. They all enjoyed the game and had a lot of fun. Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 18, ELGIN

Dear Members: The Elgin SPJST Youth held a Benefit Skating Party in Austin the Thursday night before Valentine week on February 6th. Many had made arrangements to go straight to Austin. A lot of us then got together at Jim and Dot Roach's house at 6:15, piled into cars and trucks that were taking us to Austin and got to Austin in time to start skating at 7 p.m. The cost for the evening was $1.50 per person of which a portion was given back to the youth, providing we had over 75 there. We had over 120 there. Everyone had fun. All ages came out to help us. After skating some three hours some of us were slowing down because we had blisters all over our feet . . . but we still had fun.

Also in February, we en joyed the Valentine party at the Elgin VFW Hall. We had a lot of members come and bring friends.

Our club had a practice game with Lodge No. 35, Elk, at the Axtell gym. It was fun and we thank Sister Banik and her club for the invitation.
