FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, February 23rd we woke up to these words from our 9year-old son, Edwin: "Oh look, the ground and everything is covered with snow!" And indeed it was; about three inches of that white stuff that we seldom see in these parts, had fallen. during the early morning hours and covered the area. We had planned to either attend the Czech play in Houston and, also, we had been requested to attend the District II sales representatives' banquet, given by DSR Lad • Zatopek at Lodge No. 177, Academy and it seemed that all plans of any type would have to be set aside. In the a.m. we called Sister Harriette Allison (of the Dramatic Club Hlahol in Houston) and informed her of the situation and the still falling snowflakes and wished the play much success, and expressed our regrets. She was gracious, as only she can be, and we were glad to hear that Houston and area promised better weather. Letters of Sister Frances Olexa and Miss Agnes Houdek, in the Czech section, and Brother Otto. Hanus, in both sections bear out the fact that the performance must have been enjoyed by all — actors and audience alike! Keep up the good work, Mahon We were glad to receive the news that so many students and others from distant places had attended. Our absence
SOME TRUISMS . . . It is too late for the bird to scream when he is caught. A man is half whipped the minute he begins to feel sorry for himself, or to spin an alibi with which he would explain away his defects. If all of us could bang all our troubles on a clothesline and great downpour •began .... everyone would run to grab his own. Money still talks, but you have to increase the volume if you want to get the message through today. Failures are divided into two classes — those who thought but never did, and those who did, but never thought. was our loss! This was the nicest way to have a snowfall, with the temperature never falling very low and the sun breaking through the overcast by noon — goodbye snow! We then decided to make the 75-mile (or so) drive to Lodge No. 177, Acad-' emy where Brother Lad and Sister Mary Aim Zatopek were hosting the District II SR Banquet in appreciation of the achievements of their sales representatives: in reaching their quota, and their hard work and cooperation all year
long. We arrived there at about 4 p.m. during the social hour, which, was being enjoyed by all. We joined the friendly fraternalists and Brother and Sister Zatopek were already lining up those attending for the delicious catered meal of barbecued beef and sausage with all the trimmings Everyone certainly enjoyed the meal and there was enough and more for every one! After the pleasant meal, the, awarding of plaques and awards commenced and here is something to take cognizance of: SL Vice President Joe B. Hejny spoke briefly and congratulated the sales representatives of District II on their achievements reporting that DSR Zatopek was the top in the state of Texas, that District II had sold insurance to 958 members (29% of the state total) and $4,310,110 in insurance (35 % of the state total). Indeed, District II IS to be congratulated! We regret that the photos of the banquet are still in the mail at the time of this writing; we hope to have them next week. " * We remind our readers of the coming season of district meetings and workshops, which is almost upon us. Be sure to check the workshop schedule in the report from Supreme Lodge President Morris
