FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK It has been said that the difference between a politician and a statesman is one hundred years.

This becomes more evident as we begin to hear the rhetoric preceding another national election, It takes real statesmanship to speak out for or against issues which might adversely affect a candidate's reception at the polls.

Two of our great Presidents, whose birthdays we celebrate this month, had the courage to speak their true convictions . . . George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Abraham Lincoln showed confidence in the fair judgment of the electorate when he said, "I have faith in the people .. . the danger is in their being misled. Let them know the truth and the country is safe."

We call your attention to the letter in the "Letters" section written

by Professor Halama of the University of Houston where he explains the situation with the status of the Czech classes which exists there rather thoroughly. We feel, las he does, that there needs to be a unified effort to continue with a worthwhile project which has taken so much time, effort and financial aid to begin and maintain. We feel that the third year of teaching the Czech language is only a matter of time. We were

Yours truly will add this much as food for thought: The professors and teachers, teaching the Czech language, are urged to ask and advise their students to attend this presentation and the students are urged by this editor to do so; there you will see the language being used in conversation and you can certainly benefit by it. Not very often do you have a chance to see a Czech play being presented!

On page 3, last week, and again this week, SL Vice President Joe B. Hejny has supplied us with information about our sales representatives. The SPJST Society salutes them all and appreciates their good and rewarding work.

We should, because they are our "backbone", if you will pardon the phrase. Congratulations are due them all!

There is another item on page 21 which may interest you, our members and readers. It is a contribution from Brother Jan J. Karas of Lodge 88, Houston, about a young Czech tennis player who will be appearing in Houston and Dallas during the month of March, and whom Brother Karas believes is worthy of the support of the Texas Czech community.

An individual — Perhaps it is all right for the adolescent to look to his peers to see what kind of person he is or ought to be or wishes to be, but, why are we still wearing masks? Why are we still playing roles instead of being what we truly are or might be? Why do we present to the world; a facade, a front, while the real person cowers behind it? One cannot be content to be a walking reflection of other people or of others' perceptions of one or of what others think one ought to be. The individual who is a real person, a fulfilled, complete, self-actualized person is one who has learned to stand on his own as an individual and not rely on others to dictate who he is, what he stands for, what he believes, and what he wants out of life. 'here was aonce a pendulum waiting to be fixed on a new clock.

It began to calculate how long it would be before the big wheels were worn out and its work was done. It would be expected to tick night and day, so many times a 'minJute, sixty times that every hour, and twenty-four times that every day and three hundred and sixty-five times that every year. It was awful! Quite a row of figures, enough to stagger you! Millions of ticks! "I can never do it," said the poor pendulum. But the clockmaster encouraged it. "You can do one tick at a time?" lie said. "Oh, yes," the pendulum could do that.

"Well," he said, "that is all that will be required of you." So the pendulum went to work, steadily ticking, one tick at a time, and it is ticking yet, quite' cheerfully.

NEWSBRIEFS At noon Sunday, February 2nd, SL President Brother Nick A. Morris was a guest on the half-hour Central Texas television program, "Newswatch Presents Temple," hosted by Jim Ham of Channel 8, KCEN, Temple-Waco. Brother Morris was interviewed and spoke on the beginnings of Czech immigration to Texas and the history and beginnings of the SPJST. Pictures, maps and charts were used on the program, which had previously been prepared by Brother Morris and Mr. Ham. The program was repeated at midnight on Sunday, February 9th.

Brother Morris also attended a meeting of the Advisory Council of the Ethnic Heritage Studies Program in Austin on Saturday, February 8th. This program is being developed by the Southwest Development Laboratory in Austin, Dr. Preston C. Kronkosky, director Brother Morris serves on the Council with a number of other distinguished leaders of ethnic organizations, and one of the results of the Council's work will be to develop resource materials to be used in the elementary grades throughout the State of Texas on three principal ethnic groups: Czechs, Germans and Poles.

The junior dancers from Lodge 47, Seaton, recently performed for the DAR Chapter in Belton on Saturday, February 1st. The group was instructed in the dances by Assistant Youth Leader Carilou Allen, Howard Stefka is youth leader , assisted by Sister Allen and Sister Jerry Stefka. The dancers consisted of five couples doing a total of about three dances, all of which were appreciated by the audience.

Brother Sid Pokladnik of Dallas, District III Director, recently attended a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Fraternal Congress in Chicago. As a member of the Executive Committee, Brother Pokladnik assists in formulating general plans and policies for the National Fraternal Congress meetings each year.

Each of the bridal attendants carried a single pink rose.

The bride was given in marriage by her father. She chose a chapellength gown of candlelight chiffon featuring a wide waist band of antique white embroidered rosebuds. A ruffled bodice was topped by a high neckline and the long sleeves ended in buttoned cuffs.

Her elbow-length veil of illusion was caught by a headpiece of real white roses and baby's breath. She carried a long bouquet of the same flowers entwined with greenery, A reception followed the ceremony at the Pharaoh Country Club. The bride's table held a candelabra with white candles in addition to the bridal bouquet. Miss Jaime Grigsby served the wedding cake and pink punch was poured

by Miss Lily Worthington.

Miss Sandy Grigsby served German chocolate cake and coffee at the bridegroom's table, which was centered with a purple candle and 'frosted grapes arrangement.

Presiding at the guest book was Mrs. Mary Lou Schanen. She also passed out rice bags.

The bride is a graduate of King High School and attends Texas A&I University. The bridegroom graduated from Robstown High School and is presently enrolled as a senior student at Texas A&I-CC majoring in sociology and P sy -chol gy.

After a wedding trip to San Antonio the couple will be at home in Corpus Christi.

Out-of-town guests attending the wedding were Mrs. Hattie Nonkin, Rev. and Mrs. David Edmunds, and David Ashcroft, all of San Antonio; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Miller of Gonzales; J. A. Keliehor, Mrs. Annette Carlisle and son, of Alice; and Mrs. Julius Ermis and Pam, of Woodsboro.

A wedding rehearsal supper was held for members of the wedding party and their families, Friday night, January 10th. Hosts' for the party of 20 were Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Sanford Edwards, Sr., at their home, 320 Kissling, Robstown.

MR. AND MRS. JOE T. BRAVENEC 50th ANNIVERSARY OF MR. AND MRS. JOE T. BRAVENEC Mr. and Mrs. Joe T. Bravenec celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Lodge 88, Sunday, January 19th. The open house honoring them was given by their children and grandchildren. They include one daughter, Ms. Bertha Bosshamer; her daughter and Bonin-law, Marjorie and James Colon; one son, Henry Bravenec, his wife, Gertrude, and their two children, Alice and William.

Minnie wore a beautiful floorlength lavender knit gown and a very large double orchid corsage.

Joe was in a dark navy suit, lavender tie and carnation boutonniere. Their daughter and daughter-in-law were in green floor length dresses and the granddaughters were in blue floorlength gowns.

At their registration book was Jode Jean Elzner while Becky and Kathy Mendoza pinned gold rings on the guests. After greeting their guests, Minnie and Joe opened the dance to "Somewhere My Love" played by the Clarence Baca Band.

The guests were served a delicious barbecue dinner catered by Brother Willie Wehring (doing an outstanding job on the beef). Then o gorgeous Tour-tiered lavender and gold cake was served by the

granddaughters "Cookie" and Alice.

Punch was served by Linda and Cindy Wehring. The hall was beautifully decorated with gold and white tables set by Edna Wehring.

During the course of the evening Minnie and Joe opened their many, many gifts and thanked everyone for the beautiful day that they enjoyed so much.

Everyone at Lodge 88 extends their good, wishes to Minnie and Joe as they have been caretakers of the lodge for over thirteen years and dear friends to so many!

PATMAN IS NAMED

TO SENATE PANELS State Senator William N. (Bill) Patman of Ganado was named chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Agriculture in the opening hours of the 64th Texas Legislature.

Sen. Patman, the son of IL S. Congress Wright Patman of Texarkana, was also named to the Senate Committee on Human Resources and Natural Resources and the Sub-committee on Public Health, and vice chairman on the Senate Education Committee.

DAVID W. HONZA ON DEAN'S LIST AT U. T. ARLINGTON David W. Honza of Dallas was named to the Dean's List for the fall semester at the University of Texas at Arlington.

David was among the students from the College of Business Administration named to the list. He Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton L. Honza, Sr., of Dallas.

Students who qualify for the Dean's List must achieve an academic grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4 point system) He had a full load of 17 semester hours.

David was also a Honor Student at Bishop Lynch High School and made All-State in football.

David is a member of Logde 84, Dallas.

Dear Members and Friends: The January meeting was called to order by President Alvin J. Sefcik. The pledge of allegiance to the flag was recited by the membership. Roll call of officers revealed that Brother T. Jarouszewski, second vice president, and Sister Evelyn Kent, assistant youth leader, were absent. President Sefcik welcomed Mr .and Mrs. 0'Kelly and Mr. Bennie Lundy who were present as guests.

Minutes of the November and December meeting were read and approved. It was reported that Christmas greetings had been received from Editor Rudy Sefcik and family, the Lee Foytiks of Miami, Florida; Supreme Lodge, SPJST; and from the secretary-treasurer's department. We are most appreciative of these greetings.

An acknowledgement of appreciation for sympathy expressed was received from the family of Sister Anna Scholky. A letter was also received from the Supreme Lodge advising that the following members were to get their 50-year

Our financial secretary, Sister Bessie Findley, submitted her reports which agreed with the bank balance reported by the treasurer, Sister Agnes Valusek. Brother Victor Frank reported on the Building Fund, as of December 31, 1974.

Sister Audrey Kaluza, Entertainment Chairman, reported on the Christmas party and dance. She and her committee did an outstanding job and they were given generous applause.

LODGE NO. 178, LONGVIEWKILGORE Dear Members and Readers: The regular meeting of Pinewood Heritage Lodge No. 178, was held January 17, at the Holiday Inn. President Hugo Kocian called the meeting to order. Ron Hablinski, of the youth club led the pledge of allegiance and also the SPJST creed. Brother Gene Hablinski called for a moment of silence to remember our departed brothers and sisters.

Vice President Bob Stevenson, chairman of the building committee, read a letter from the SU preme Lodge stating that the interest rates would go up, March 1st. The members agreed to a special called meeting with Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris attending.

Second Vice President Gene Hatalinski announced that a games party will be held February 28, alt the Elderville Hall. Refreshments of baked goods will be sold.

President Kocian asked the members and guests to introduce themselves. (There were so many new faces).

Mr. Leonard Knipe was introduced by President Kocian. Mr. Knipe said he would help the youth club build a telescope.

Youth club assistant YL Sister Viola Kocian, called attention to some of the activities that the youth can become involved in not only on the local level but statewide.

With no future business, the meeting was adjourned. Everyone enjoyed the refreshments of coffee and cookies.

In our new'business, a motion was made by Sister Faye Kuehn to appoint a R&R Committee. Thie committee will consist of Brother Emil Mogonye, chairman, and Brother Leslie Gustafson and Sister Belva Alexander. A motion was also made and palmed to appoint an entertainment committee. This committee will have Brother Jim Roach as the chairman and Brothers Howard Kuehn, and Lowel Powell serving with him. The president brought it to the members' attention to start thinking about what each member or family would like to contribute toward the hall and discuss it among the members.

LODGE NO. 18, ELGIN

The officers of El Campo Lodge No. 50, presented the Czech class at El Campo High School with checks totaling $150.00. The Supreme Lodge check for the amount of $100.00 and a check from Lodge No. 50 for $50.00. The checks were presented to Czech Class President Karen Capak and Czech Class Instructor Clifton Wenglar. Vice President Brother Frankie Vanek spoke briefly to the class about the history of the SPJBT. The 19'75 SPJST calendar and a book of the history of SPJST were given to the class by President Rita Vanek.

Dear Members: The Elgin SPJST Lodge No. 18 held its monthly meeting on January 21st, with a fantastic turnout.

The meeting, opened with the pledge of allegiance. A motion was made and seconded that the minutes of the last meeting be approved as read. Sister Mary Barron, gave a financial report, Sister Joyce Davenport gave the treasurer's report followed by a motion made and passed to accept this report. Brother Lad Zatopek, District II sales representative, was an out-of-town guest for the evening.

Brother Gustafson, president, read the letter from Brother John Kubena, District I director, stating that the loan on the lodge had been tentatively approved. Brother Emil Mogonye gave an up-to-date report on the building. New members approved were Stephen James Balch, Gilbert J. Kubicek, George Diebel; one transfer from Lodge No. 29, Gene McVay; and one change of name, Delores Haisler, to Delores McCullough. The lodge welcomes all the new members and the transfer. Western Day preparations are under way with Brother Jim Mogonye to see about a booth at the park for the SPJST. Brother Emil Mogonye made a motion that Tommy McCullough be in charge of the float committee, with Brother Roy Barron to help him Sister Jane11 Mogonye brought to the members' attention ways to make money for the lodge and the entertainment committee will be meeting to start making plans.

Since our next meeting will be on February 18, Sister Jeanette Peterson, made a motion that perhaps we could have a Valentine party. The entertainment committee will be meeting to decide and will contact all members. Sister Dottie Rokh, our youth leader, brought it to the members' attention that the youth would be having a Valentine skating party in Austin, February ft.

A motion was made by Brother Roy Barron and seconded by Brother Mike Mogonye, that the meeting adjourn for refreshments and fellowship. Motion passed.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members: We just had our monthly meeting on February 2nd and I wish all of you members could have attended, because it was one of the most cooperative meetings we ever had.

All those who were present were for expanding our lodge building.

We are looking toward the good of the lodge being the best and largest in East Texas.

I will not give you the contents of the meeting in this letter, because Sister Dorothy Smith said that she would write, so please look for her report in the Vestnik.

I do want to compliment Sister Smith for the great work she Is doing for our SPJST Society and our lodge. I don't think you will find anyone in the SPJST who does more for no pay. Sister Smith has big poster books where she keeps all of the letters and pictures and khe activities that have taken place at our lodge and, of course, we also have several other members in our lodge who do outstanding work.

I have just been informed by my doctor that I am recovering very rapidly from the effects of what they said was a heart attack.

The doctor informed me I could start on my normal activities and that report really made me happy.

My doctor (Dr. Carl Murry) is a member of our lodge.

Brothers and sisters, I have received phone calls from Houston, Temple, West, Dallas and other places, and many get-well cards; also a call from New York. I want to let you know I appreciate your kindness very much.

To the members of Lodge '74: I just cannot find words adequate enough to express my appreciation for the honor you have given my family and me. You cancelled all activities during the week my wife, Bert, died; that was the greatest honor any person could have and I also want to state that the family and I appreciated the beautiful spray of flowers and the numerous get-well cards and phone calls.

All the response you fine members and friends have given me makes me feel like living, and wanting to do even more for all of you for your wonderful kindness.

I also want to thank the First National Bank of Crockett. Most of the staff working at the bank are members of our SPJST Lodge 74 and they have cut out all the pictures from the Vestnik's "19'74 Sales Champion" and mailed it to me, with a statement saying: "Chester, you are a very important person to us." Thanks to all of you for the very nice compliment.

We have taken some pictures at the meeting and, if they turn out well, we will send some of them to be printed in the Vestnik.

I will close for now, and thanks a million for the comfort you have given my family.

We do hope that with each new day, she improves. We also extend our get-well wishes to Sisters Jo Ann Hixson (Lodge 92) who underwent surgery and the same for Mary Stransky from Dallas, who had surgery.

We are all saddened by the sudden death of Sister Irene Hosek of Dallas, who passed away Sunday. We extend our condolence to Brother Walter and all the May she rest in eternal peace.

We extend our congratulations to Donese Michelle and Huland Ray Stephens, Jr., who were wed Saturday, February 1st. Donese is a long-time member of our lodge and the daughter of Brother and Sister Charles and Georgia Ann Shriek.

May they have a long and happy life together.

January 30, 1975 Dear Mr. Sefeik, With concern over your editorial published in the January 22nd issue of the Vestnik, I feel I must write to you and your readers in defense of the work I have been doing at the University of Houston. `fie mis-information relayed to you about the Czech language program, I have so diligently and zealously worked for, is dis-heartening to me and to my students.

We have organized and built a firm foundation in the Czech activities at the University of Houston from nothingness to three different classes in which 38 students are now presently enrolled for the spring semester and perhaps more when the final count is taken.

The Czech. Language Committee of the University of Houston was in error in reporting to you the num.ber of students presently enrolled.

By December 20th, 23 students in all three sections had already enrolled as a result of early registration, only. Many other students registered during the regular registration period and then again during the late registration of which a final count has not been made.

So it is with profound sincerity that I ask that nothing be published concerning the Czech language program at the University of Houston unless it is first edited by the registrar's office or by my office. Nor can any member of the CLCUH issue any clear statements concerning the classes at the University without going through the same procedure. The person who informed you of the 20 students

VESTNYIC (prior to the January 22nd issue) for the present classes was really not right in giving out a total before the January 28th and 29th "drops and adds" were finalized.

No true counting could have been made before this time.

In order for clarity, I must explain that there were many unnecessary actions taken by certain sources which only took up much of the time of many of us, especially beginning in early July, 1974.

In this manner we could be preparing our awn downfall with the administration at the University of Houston because of our inner struggles among ourselves. Time and effort I had left was better spent promoting the program on the University campus, building up the Czech library, providing the students with dictionaries and other books for the learning of the lan guage, raising funds for scholarships, promoting, at Czech gatherings, both the Czech program at the University of Houston and the C'zech studies at Charles University in Prague, giving interviews to the news media, the many public actions organized by the student Czech Club, calling up prospective students and always present is the task of generating new students for the courses.

All of the albove-mentioned extra, curricular activities were accomplished with the help of my Czech students.

If there was such a committee as the CLCUH appointed by the University of Houston officials, it was meant to serve as communication officers to help the Czech language at the University and by contacting the teachers and representatives of the various Czech organizations in the Houston area in making them aware of the needs which the beginning program deserves. Misunderstandings have developed between the student members and officials of the UHCC, the University officials on one side and the members and some officers of the SPJST Lodge No. 88, Czech fraternal societies, and the whole reading public of the Vestnik on the other.

Unity is necessary. While the Czech program at the U of H proves to be the largest in the state in the number of fullyaccredited students in the past year and a half (about 110 stu-

dents, not counting the spring registration), academically and future oriented, it is a great detriment to this program to create an impression that this program is a failure. It may well be a failure for all of us if we are not able to find a way of working together as originally intended by the founders of the University of Houston Czech program, and carried out.

Without financial contributions and services of the Czech fraternal organizations, particularly the SPJST Supreme Lodge and Lodge 88, Houston, these accomplishments would not have been realized and carried out.

Here allow me to state this: according to the chairman of the committees on Czech at the U of H, Dr. Walsh, 50 percent of the students in the large language classes are expected to drop out each semester. We lost only 12 students, which amounts to only 24 percent, less than one-half the expected 'dropout number, and for the spring semester, W75, we did not have the opening of any new classes scheduled by the university.

Now, out of the 110 Czech students (1 1/2 years) and not counting the spring semester, only 12 dropped out. We must remember that many do not re-enroll due to family problems, graduation, employment problems, inflation, moving, etc.

And, let me add, that last year, and again this year, we were not authorized to open new classes (131-231) in the middle of the college year, therefore, the spring semester gain amounted to zero.

What also hurts more is the fact that the U of II has not authorized a third year of Czech (331-332), which causes us to lose approximately 20 students each year who have finished the second year of Czech and having no third year to enter, must of necessity take up either French, German, Russian, or Spanish, which courses do have a third year scheduled. Let us hope we can remedy this in the future.

With the encouragement and faith placed in me by the U of H Search Committee, my fellow teachers of Czech in our area, and my students, I shall continue to work with diligence and perserverance in my purpose of furthering

10 the propagation of the Czech language and its culture in Texas.

We had three guests, Bernice Dud7k, Larry Brown and Barret Ivy. After youth members Debbie Uptmor and Karen Hykel led the membership in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the American flag, and after Debbie said the SPJST pledge, President Krizan asked the membership to stand for a few moments of silent tribute to our departed lodge member, Brother William J. Marek.

All officers then gave their reports, and all were approved as read. Sister Schuetz reported that the youth will begin several new projects. They will go to the rest home on the 11th of February and will have a Valentine party on Friday, Februray 14. At the March meeting, the youth will have a kite flying contest. There will be prizes for the prettiest, smallest, best home-made and the highest flying kite. Birthdays for February include Bennie Mynar, Tammie Mynar, Stephanie Mynar, and Brother Mike Mazanec. Anniversaries include Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dobecka and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Beseda.

by President R. X. Hafner, and we stood for the pledge of allegiance and for a prayer. The minutes of the last meeting were read and accepted as read. Our books for 1974 are being audited.

Our meeting mostly consisted of a complete yearly report from the officers.

Also, Mr. Hafner thanked all the officers who served in 1974 and said that they had done a splendid job.

The other officers for 1975 are: 2nd vice president — Donald Rush.

The 1974 Board of Trustees leaving officers are: Rudy Hafner, George Charanza, Chester Shmoldas; the lodge voted to make them honorary trustee members. Trustees staying in office are David Moore and Johnny Johnston.

The newly appointed trustees are: Jack Parrish, "Chili" Hodges, Hughie Smith, Andy Fowler, Rileigh Christian, James Wilcox, Joe Frank Driskell. Flag Bearers: Fred Michka, Bobby Charanrai.

SPJST Lodge No. '74 gave a $25 donation, being an honorary member of the ,Crockett Volunteer Fire Department for 1975.

A banquet will be held in June for our 1975 Crockett High School seniors, who are members of the SPJST. Another 50 x 100 foot addition to our lodge building.

Senior Citizens' Day in May was discussed.

The Bicentennial and fourth anniversary of Lodge 74 in July.

We appreciate the donations from each one who has given to our Scholarship Fund.

LODGE NO. 18, ELGIN Dear Members: For some of you who are not familiar with Elgin, we want to welcome you to our nice town. We have approximately 5,000 people and feel it is the ideal town in which to have a new SPJST Hall.

We are close to Austin, Manor, Bastrop, McDade, Coupland, with many, many, residents living in the rural area.

Our plans, for the coming year are very promising. We have purchased land just outside the city limits of Elgin on Highway 95 No. Our Building-Planning Committee is having weekly meetings to get things under way. Our Entertainment Committee is planning for some real goodies.

Due to the lack of facilities in Elgin at the present time, we are unable to sponsor dances and advertise for such, but we will try to continue to have entertainment for the members at our monthly meetings. This month we will have our normal monthly meeting at the Elgin VFW Hall on Tuesday, February 18, from 7 to & p.m. with refreshments and a Valentine dance following with Jodie Dubec and the Silvertones furnishing the music.

Our youth, group sponsored a Valentine skating party in Austin February 6th. They are also planning another bake sale in a couple of weeks and then Look Out! — they will be busy from then on!

LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Members: President Ernest Zahirniak convened our regular monthly meeting at 3:05 p.m.. on February 2nd.

The pledge of allegiance was recited in unison by all members present.

Secretary Frank Cocek read the January meeting minutes, which were approved as read.

Correspondence followed from the home office, advising us of the workshop to be held again in Ennis on April 5th.

Brother Zahirniak gave a report of the interior and exterior remodeling of the lodge home, and expressed his desire for our officers to 'be represented at the workshop, which should be beneficial to us.

Financial Secretary and Treasurer Raymond Hruska gave the lodge building report, and he also reported that the books were audited.

Youth Leader Maxine Sefcik presented the youth club activities report. In her report, she gave a concise report of the amount of tickets printed for the club's quilt project, how many were distributed for sale, and how much had been collected to-date, for a deposit.

Sister Maxine also reported the balance on the savings and checking accounts at West Bank & Trust.

She mentioned that her books were audited and found in order.

Sister Sefcik then touched on the special project to be held in the bi-centennial year for our lodge by the youth club and asked for more consideration of said subject at the next meeting, for approval and help from the mother lodge members.

Brother Rudy Sefcik, editor of the Vestnik, mentioned that he receives a number of letters and complaints from the surviving families (mostly widows), who are members of our SPJET, and who cease receiving the Vestnik when their husband dies (evidently be-. cause the Vestnik was mailed in the husband's name). He further stated that he plans to take this matter up with the proper officials at the home office.

The door prize drawing followed and Brother Jan Vaculik was the lucky recipient. He in turn donated the prize money to the youth club project, which was appreciated

by the youth.

Before adjournment, it was announced that our next lodge meet-, ing will be held on Sunday, March 2, beginning at 3 p.m. with refreshments. The youth club will hold their meeting at 2 p.m.. Do try to attend and stay for a fraternal fellowship following the meeting.

Fraternally, Mona Zahimiak, Reporter -CZECH PLAY Al LODGE 88, FPB 23LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters, Whew, has this been a busy week! School is back in full swing and the ledge is humming with activity. Rehearsals are really going well for the Czech play to be presented on February 23. The play will begin at 2:30 and tickets are $1.50. They will be the same price at the door or you can purchase them from anyone who is in the play or from Dramatic Club members. A delicious fried chicken 'dinner will be served from 11:30 on and a free dance will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. If the rehearsals are any indication as to how enjoyable the play will be, I know everyone is going to have a fantastic afternoon.

I've been telling a friend of mine who is taking the Czech language course at the U of H how well the rehearsals have been going, and he can't wait to see the play. The instructors and students of the various universities that are offering the Czech language course are going to be invited to attend the play. I hope everyone can make it. How about you? I hope I see all of you sitting in the audience flashing all the actors a big smile.

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting an important visitor to one of our Social Night gatherings.

The young man was Sgt. Ronald Cleboski, son of Eli and Irene Gorka. Ron was on a 37-day leave from the Army, where he has given four years of service. He was stationed for a year at Camp Casey, Korea, and is now on his way to Fort Riley, Kansas. He will be there until August when he will be discharged from the service. I was very glad to meet you Ronnie and I know everyone is proud of you for your service.

A couple of our lodge members were "birthday boys" around the

11 beginning of this month. Allyn Peeples whose birthday is February 2, and Amos Kadlecek, whose birthday is February 4, were given 4 cake and a midnight brunch by the ladies of the usual crowd at Table 8. The. Blumes provided the music for the Saturday night dance and I understand that the little surprise party was a huge success.

I'm happy to report that Mr. Henry Burford has been returned to his hospital room after spending almost a week in the intensive care unit at Spring Branch Memorial Hospital. He is doing much better and can't wait to go home.

We all hope his remaining stay is very short and he can be home with his family Also, Mike Dion, husband of the former Sheryl Cross, has now returned to work and is doing fine.

If you recall, in a previous letter, I said that Mike and his brotherin-law, Wayne Cado, were burned when some gasoline they were pouring into a car ignited. Mike received the most serious burns, but I am happy to say that he is OK now.

The sad news of the week is that we lost one of our dear members.

Mr. Louis Kusy passed away and we will all miss him. We all extend to his family and loved ones our deepest sympathy.

Flag Bearers James Allen and Stephen Morris led the assembly in the pledge to the U.S. flag.

A moment of silent prayer in memory of three departed brothers, namely, John Mendota, Frank C. Motl, and John C. Motl, was held. May honor and eternal rest be theirs after their earthly trials and tribulations. Condolence and sympathy to the bereaved families of these departed is expressed.

Roll call of the lodge officers was read by Secretary Lillian Kosarek and all were present.

Visitors, at this lodge meeting were Sisters Ann Balusek of Buck-

12 holts, Viola Cherverdca of Leedale, and Brother Victor Cervenka of Seaton. We are proud you came with your husbands and wife and attended our meeting. You are invited to come again to the next meeting and stay for the battle dance that follows.

The members on the sick list were many, due to the influenza epidemic that was sending many to the hospital. Those reported to us were Brothers Frank Bartek, Johnny Herring, Louis Schneider, Edwin Chlapek, Edwin Kohutek, Frank C. Motl and John C. Motl (the last two passed away recently) and Sisters Albino. Chervenka, Ella Pechal, Bessie Divis, and Wanona Sula. I hope good health is yours at this writing.

The minutes of the January 5th meeting were read and approved as read. President Jerry Pechal and Vice President Alfred Klusacek appointed Sister Ruby Bolton, Brothers Frank Spanhel and Leon Sodek to inspect the bonds of the lodge officers, which they found to be satisfactory.

Correspondence read by Sister Kosarek included a letter from the Supreme Lodge advising that Sister Millie Sefcik is to receive her 50year pin this year, a report of the insurance sales by the sales representatives from District II Sales Representative Lad J. Zatopek, a letter advising lodge officers of the forthcoming workshops, and the mortuary dues from the Supreme Lodge. A thank you note from the William Juneks for the fruit packages at Christmas and a donation from Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Richter of Corpus Christi for $10 in memory of Brother John W. Krcha, her uncle, were also received.

After adjournment, a light lunch and the usual 'happy hour' was held for those present on this 'rainy afternoon. Some stayed at home, because of flooding.

Reports were given by the officers and chairmen. Board minutes were read by Trustee Secretary Bob Vasicek. We acted on the recommendation of the board to continue with the same hours for dances as now. Also, the ladies' lounge and kitchen were added to the renovation of the hall's interior on the successful bid by Johnie L. Vasicek Construction Co. As soon as the materials (colors in particular) are chosen, the remodeling will get under way.

Next meeting is set for Sunday, March 2nd, at 1 p.m. The fiftyyear members, Sister Millie Sefcik and Brother Frank V. Spanhel, erroneously omitted from the SL list will be presented their pins.

We elected Brother Alfred and Sister Martha Klusacek to be bar chairmen for at least a month, or maybe two months or the rest of the year. Other details of running the bar by officers and trustees will be working out on February 18th.

A motion was made to bring back the dress policy selected in 1963 on the floor for a vote. This failed by more than the twothirds majority required, so the policy of dresses only, for the ladies, and no blue jeans to be worn by the men, will still be in effect.

Brother Howard Stefka, youth leader, stated that 26 youths were present plus 1 visitor, Michael Morris. He also stated that a youth leaders' training seminar is scheduled for May 1st and 2nd at Camp Val Verde and that the May meeting date may have to be changed in order that the youth leaders could attend. The fund-raising project, usually held in February, was postponed due to the remodeling of the lodge building. District

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Our dramatic Club is now going into final rehearsals for our forthcoming Czech play, and the group in our chorus is being very faithful by coming to rehearsals regularly and learning the songs. The actors all seem to fit their parts perfectly and handle their roles very well. Our stage decorations will be beautiful as always. The first act will show a woodland scene and the second and third acts also an outdoor scene, showing the homes of the town mayor and the town-crier. We are hoping for nice weather and a big turnout. The date is Sunday, February 23rd; at 2 p.m. Czech films will be shown and at 2:30 the play begins, to be followed by a free dance. And don't forget the fried chicken dinner. The District V meeting is our first activity for this year. It will be on Sunday, March 16, at Lodge 81 in Needville. We will have a District V Youth Club "White Elephant Sale." Our program will be

a short one — but it'll be a good one and leave you with a melody on your mind. Please come and support our youth! The youth club will have election of district officers so you should begin thinking about who you want to be your district officers.

I am encouraged by the fact that the Lodge 175 Youth Club may be on its way to reactivation.

There will be a Valentine party on Thursday, February 13th, for the youth, parents and membership of that lodge and we are hoping they will elect a youth leader at that meeting. All members of Lodge 175 should try to be present at this important meeting.

Lodge 176's youth dub had a skating party Saturday, February 1, and invited the members of Lodge 172's youth club to join them. After skating, we all went to a pizza parlor. It was great fun for everyone. Thanks for inviting us.

I visited the Lodge 88 Youth Club on Sunday, February 2nd, and spoke to them on a number of different subjects. After their meeting we played some games and had an exhibition of strength and endurance from our "flour children," the new president of Lodge 88, Louis Hanus, and Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg.

They engaged in a flour cutting contest. The loser had to pick up a penny, that was buried in the flour, with their teeth. Brother Harms was the loser, but the youth club wasn't a loser. Not only was he a great sport and picked up the penny with his teeth but he made a generous donation to the youth club. Thank you, Brother Hanus!

the meeting while eleven juniors and four teens registered their Valentine number entry. The entries for judging were neatly displayed on designated tables. Judging explanation and score sheets were then given to the impartial judges, Mrs. Betty Tucker, Miss Andrea Millican and Miss Nancy Matula.

During the judging process, our youth held their meeting, and several topics were discussed. Mainly, the selection of a volleyball team; proper facilities were arranged for; all substitutes will be notified of the first practice as soon as the weather permits.

One thing for sure, this leader wishes to make a comment to the above-mentioned activity: that the playoffs in Axtell will not be for life or death; this will be all in fun, and I expect our lodge's representation to display good sportsmanship as they have before in their competition. To challenge someone! is a lot of fun itself; in this type of challenge, you will also improve your physical fitness for a healthier body. Always remember: A smiling loser is as important as a winner. Your leaders, officers and members of the lodge extend the best of luck all the way!

After adjournment the results of the first, second, and third place winners in the two divisions were announced to the following: Juniors: Edwin Sefeik — 255 points Jana Wolf — 228 points Mimi Wolf — 215 points Teens: Darlene Zahirniak — 219 points Carol Mynar — 192 points Loretta Volcik — 176 points Valentines were distributed to the judges, club members and our two invited guests, Jeff and Jill Kubacak from Lodge No. 36, West.

To express our appreciation, we invited the judges to stay for the social. They were glad to render their services because they are involved in civic and community affairs and they are mare of the time involved in any undertaking.

Our club's quilt project is still on and will be on until all tickets are exhausted. The drawing shall take place in the mother lodge meeting and the winner will be announced publicly. it was agreed in the meeting that

the person who sells the most tickets will receive $5 from the youth club fund.

Since Easter is being held early in the, year, it was agreed upon to schedule our planned activities for March 2nd; that is if the goodies are displayed in the stores before our set date; if the goodies are not available, then we shall reset a date for the event, by notifying each active member, only. In case of bad weather, the activities shall be held indoors. Prizes will be given. Try to remember this happening and keep your xerox schedule of activities in a handy place so you won't have an excuse: "I forgot."

The youth leaders were well pleased with the attendance and the enthusiasm displayed among the members. Your leaders always go out of their way to make things tick and click in order to have a successful turnout. We are depending on you again in March!

Mona Zahirniak and yours truly wish to express our gratitude to Sister Beanie KaIcir (for bringing her adding machine) and Sister Agnes Mynar, for overseeing the score sheet tabulations; it was appreciated very much.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Members, Our youth club held its meeting on a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon, February 2nd, with good attendance.

I entered my Valentine in the junior division's contest which was being judged during our meeting by three judges.

To my surprise I won first place.

My Valentine was made out of red construction paper folded in half, with "U—R----4--Me" in each white block trimmed in red, blue, yellow and orange; and on the inside, it read: "OK Valentine?"

We chose our junior volleyball team and I will also be a sub for our team.

It was agreed to have our Easter egg hunt and contest after our youth club meeting which will be held Sunday, March 2nd, at 2 p.m.

Keep in touch with the club members because our youth leader gave us a list of many exciting activities that will be in store for us, which will be a lot of fun.

School lessons in the third grade are getting harder and harder. I was the only boy in my class to be on the honor roll the last time.

I study hard and I want to be able to make the National Honor Society and Who's Who of the American High Schools, like my brother, Terry Craig Sefcik, did.

Dear Members and Readers, We held our regular monthly meeting on February 2. We had six new members. Welcome to our youth club.

In the correspondence we had two thank-you cards, one from Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz, and one from the Eddie Marek family.

On January 26th, we had our first volleyball practice which turned out good, followed by a hot dog supper. The next practice hasn't been decided yet.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz listed several projects that we will be working on at our Friday night socials.

The birthdays for February are Amy Eyers, Jeffery Hykel, Bennie, Tammi and Stephine Mynar, and Lisa Uptmor. The birthday cake was brought by Carol Dobecka, Dianne Schroeder won the door prize and will bring the cake for the next meeting which will be March 2nd after the mother lodge meeting. See you then.

Under unfinished business we decided to take our newspapers, that we have been collecting for the last two months, to the Bryan ,City Mission. We will go February 23. After we take our papers, we will go bowling.

We had no old or new business.

We had one new member at our last meeting and one new member 'at this meeting. The two new members are Dene Brinkman and Karen Urbanovsky. We had no further discussion and the meet-

LODGE NO. 30, TAITON Dear Vestnik Readers, The Talton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting on February 2nd at the Taiton Community Center. The meeting was then called to order by our president, Mary Jo Dluhos. The pledge was led by Deann Krpec and the prayer was led by Lisa Blaha.

At the meeting we discussed our district meeting, getting things ready for YAD and about going to camp. Our visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Duckett, Mr. and Mrs. Brdecka and Miss Mrnustik.

We then had our Valentine party. Mrs. Duckett, Mrs. Brdecka, and Miss Mrnustik judged the Valentines that the members of the club made. The winners were Chris Krepec — 1st place, Clara Dorotik — 2nd place; and Christine Krpec 3rd place.

The meeting was then adjourned, and we played two fun games.

One County 'Vet' Bows Out Friday One of these three veteran Fayette County officials, who have a combined record of 131 years of county service, will officially retire at the close of business this Friday. That will be Gilbert H. Eck, center, who bows out after 50 years — the first 19 as deputy assessor and the last 31 as county tax assessor-collector, However, he'll stay on awhile to assist his successor,

20 69 HUNTING ACCIDENTS REPORTED FOR 1974 Not all reports are in from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game wardens, hut early figures show that 69 Texans were involved in hunting accidents during 1974.

Of that figure, 15 accidents were fatal.

Department hunter safety coordinator T. D. Carroll of Austin said that it will probably be after the last quail season before some of the wardens have time to complete the paperwork on casualties and that the final figure will likely be somewhat higher.

Carroll said that 24 deer hunters were injured in hunting accidents, six fatally.

Under Carroll's supervision, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department administers a Voluntary Hunter Safety Program which is open to everyone 12 years1 of age and older. The fee is $1.

Basic firearm handling and safety is taught along with hunter ethics, first aid and survival.

Local game wardens maintain the names and addresses of hunter safety instructors in their areas.

"DON'T OVERLOAD THE BOAT" IS STILL GOOD ADVICE True or false? A boat's capacity for carrying passengers is determined by the number of seats available for those passenger& The answer, say Texas Parks and Wildlife Department water safety experts, is an emphatic, "false."

Unfortunately, they say, some boaters don't even use this miter!or for loading boats and cram as many persons► aboard as will fit shoulder to shoulder.

Normally, say P & WD officials, the way you can determine the maximum number of persons which your boat should carry is by looking at the capacitor plate.

This plate usually is mounted in the boat by the manufacturer near the operator's position. It tells the •recommended size engine for the boat, the maximum number of persons who should be allowed to ride in the boat and the maximum weight for persons, motor and gear.

The skipper should keep in mind that the capacity plate is based on several assumptions, and it is up to the skipper's common sense to make adjustments if these as-

For example, the maximum number of people for the boat is made on the assumption that the operator will use the recommended size motor. Also, the capacity plate recommendations are based on an average weight of 150 pounds per person.

A third assumption is that the boater is going out under ideal weather and water conditions and 'that these conditions will stay ideal.

Not all boats have a capacity plate, but a small amount of simple arithmetic will provide you with a reasonable guide for the number of persons the boat can carry safely. Bear in mind, however, the arithmetic is based on the same assumptions as the capacity plate.

The first thing to determine is the overall length of your boat.

Next, find the width at the widest part, and multiply the length times the width, keep fractions of feet in decimals (example, 5 feet 6 inches -- 5.5 feet).

Now divide the result of your multiplication by 15 The number 15 is a constant and comes from the assumption that the average weight of the passengers in the boat would be 150 pounds. The zero is dropped so that the answer will be in passengers, not pound& Here is an example for a boat 18 feet long and five feet, six inches wide. 18 x 5.5 — 99. 99 divided by 15, is 6.6 passenger& Your answer should be rounded down to the nearest whole number, so the boat in the example would carry Six persons and have a slight margin of safety.

DEBUT OF YOUNG CZECH TENNIS PLAYER MARTINA NAVRATILOVA IN TEXAS Tennis as a sport is on a tremendous upswing in Texas and throughout the U.S. Tennis on television is occupying prime time and tournaments are paying fabulous money to the winners. Dallas, Austin and Houston are hotbeds of tennis in Texas.

A young and talented Czech player, Martina Navra tilova, will be appearing in tournaments at the Houston Racquet Club, March 10-15 at Sam Houston Coliseum and in another contest at Moody Coliseum on the campus of SMU in Dallas, March 17-23.

I am sure all our SPJST membership and especially the youth will want to read the following writeup about Martina, by Jack Gallangher in the Houston Post's sport section in the January 22nd, 1975 issue.

Ah, Women's Lib rears its pretty head even in Czechoslovakia. "But the movement isn't as active as in the stately; grins Navratilova.

When the women's libbers visit Sam Houston Coliseum March 10-15 the purse will be 10 times as great as the event that inaugurated the Virginia Slims tour, a $7,500 affair at the Houston Racquet Club in 1970. Since then purses in local Slims tournaments have increased to $30,000 in 1973, $50,000 in 1974 and $75,000 in 1975. In short, Virginia is no longer slim. She's fat, sassy and successful.

Billie Jean dominant From that modest beginning in Houston, Billie Jean King has emerged as the dominant woman in sports. After defeating Chris Evert in the Sarasota finals Billie Jean announced her retirement, except for a few Virginia Slims events each year and the World Team Tennis schedule. Her goodbye was taken about as seriously as Muhammad Ali's vow to quit as ati active fighter if he defeated George Foreman.

King's action might be termed her first annual retirement announcement. There will be many more farewells in the future, because at 31 she promises to be an active player for years to come.
