FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK We call your attention to the article from SL President Morris in this issue (it also was in last week's issue) pertaining to the increase in the interest rate from 5 to 6 percent on loans to lodges building new buildings (lodge homes), or increasing their present loans. This increase becomes effective March 1, 1975 It is under the heading: Supreme Lodge. Also in last week's issue, under the same heading, perhaps you noted the names on page 14 of the 50-year members listed by SL SecretaryTreasurer Mikeska, and on pages 15 and 16 we had the annual report of our seven district directors.

We encourage all members to read these reports; they are there for that purpose. Figures are somewhat dry or boring to a lot of people, but how else can one be informed of what is going on in our Society without these reports and tabulations.

Since the effective date of the 1 percent increase in the interest rate to lodges is March 1st, officers and members of lodges planning to build, expand, remodel, purchase land, etc., should act with haste if a saving of 1 percent has any incentive value. That's $1,000 a year on a loan of $100,000. — There's ONE MONTH LEFT! Under the same heading are the excerpts from the minutes of the

On pages 16 and 17 is the regular monthly report of income and expenditures from SL Financial Secretary Zabcik. This is for your information, also.

In the last few' paragraphs of the Excerpts, your editor noticed there was some discussion of his editorial pertaining to referendums and method of balloting. Also, a motion was made, seconded and passed that the Supreme Lodge requests the use of the front pages of the Vestnik in the Christmas and New Year's issues. We do not know what is involved, however, those issues are in the distant future, so we !lave 1ime enough for that; be-

sides, that's what we thought we were doing every year!

Yours truly did not get to attend the meeting because of our son's need to register for college on the same date available for our attendance in the meeting.

Attending the October quarterly meeting was very interesting; we had nothing to bring up at that time, however, we enjoyed the thorough report of Vice President Hejny and discussion of same. * We appreciate your many letters and comments for publication and also your personal letters. Your active interest is appreciated.

Building an estate is not easy but one way it can be: done is through life insurance. By periodic payment of premiums, you can provide for the financial possibilities that may lie ahead and thus protect yourself and your life's big problems, but it is the family.

Paying premiums is not one of solution to many of life's difficult financial problems. With a life insurance program you save so system atically that the deposit becomes a part of your everyday plan and is cared for in the same way you care for your current expenses.

NEWSBRIEFS Charles Kacir, 83, of Yoakum, Texas, died on December 29, 1914 after a lengthy illness in a Yoakum rest home. Funeral services were held from the Buffington Funeral Home, and burial was held in Yoakuan on December 30. He was a longtime member of Lodge 83, Sweet Home. He was a brother of the late SPJST Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor August Kacir, and a brother of George Kaleir of West.

A, relative, Mrs. John (Jennie) Hranicky of . Orange Grove, died from injuries received in an auto accident enroute to Brother Charles Kacir's funeral. She was the wife of Publication Committee member, Brother John Hranicky of District VII. • • Joe Kacir, 85, of. Yoakum, died January 18th, 1975, in Yoakum.

Funeral services were held from the Buffington Funeral. Home, and burial was at Yoakum on January 20th. Brother Kacir was a longtime member of Lodge No. 63, sweet Home. He was also a brother of the late SPJST SL Legal Advisor August ICacir, and Brother George Kacir of West.

ert T. Kallina were married in a contemporary ceremony Saturday, December 28, 1974 at 11 a.m. in Austin at the Chapel of the University Lutheran Center, with the Reverend Curtis Johnson i officiating.

The bride is the daughter of Col. (Ret.) and Mrs. Joseph A. Hegar,of San Antonio and the granddaughter of Mrs. Frank Bolf, Sr. and the late Frank Boll, Sr., of Floresville, and of Mrs. Joseph Hegar of Austin and the late Reverend Joseph Hegar of Temple. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund F. Kallina of Brookfield, Conn., and Largo, Florida.

Miss Jeanette Davis and Miss Emily Stoats, both of San Antonio, were the bridal attendants and Dr. Edmund Kallina, brother of the groom, of Orlando, Florida, and Dr. Kumares Sirtha, of West

Lafayette, Indiana, brother-in-law of the groom, were groomsmen.

The bride wore a candlelight gown of re-imbroidered alencon lace and delustered satin and a veil of handmade Brussels lace in the same shade. The bridesmaids' dresses were old-fashioned gawps of apricot and ivory doubleknit.

The groom and groomsmen wore dark brown Prince Albert suits with pale apricot ruffled shirts.

The chapel was beautiful with several large green plants, a huge basket of gladiola, mums, and greenery on the altar along with several large white candles on square blocks of wood. Music was furnished by friends of the bride and groom, singing and playing guitars.

A reception was held at 4 p.m. at the San Antonio home of the bride's parents. The couple will live in Round Rock, where the groom is a teacher and coach. Re-

(The bride's parents area SPJST members. —Editor) Houston, Texas Dear Czech Friends: Our enthusiasm concerning Czech Conversation Courses at Alvin Junior College seems to be boundless.

It makes one wonder from where all the interest is coming, what keeps generating the fervor, what is there that accelerates the desire to participate in Czech study, Surely, it all boils down to the fact that we too, as in the whole country, are beginning to realize we must continually regenerate our dormant interest in our ancestors.

Our forefathers came to America with a vision for a more complete life. They wished to ful-fill dreams of a good future for their children. Under tremendous stress and deprivation they gained sustenance from their new home. They struggled diligently, against great odds, and succeeded in the trials.

Trials and tribulations seemed to strengthen, to test and develop their overpowering purpose of "making good in the new land."

Today, one to three generations removed from our first Czech immigrants, our Czech heritage is being re-examined and being given a new driving force. No nation can exist for long when it forgets to build on the firm foundation set up by its pioneers. Much is being researched to assess the important facts about Czechoslovakia, especially as they relate to the history and culture of the United States. Names of great historians, statesmen, artists, and scholars appear repeatedly in American history.

Let us not for a moment forget the lesser ones who contributed much to the development of our great country. Our ancestors must be given much credit for their part in founding American towns and cities. In their seemingly small way, they have strengthened the very fiber of our way of life.

With its tremendous background heritage there is no wonder why so many schools are offering courses of study of Czech. Alvin Junior College, Alvin, Texas is no

exception. It is an exception, in that the Conversation Course is continuing strong. To date, 30 students have enrolled in the second course offered. The class meets once a week for a two-hour session, Itch never seems long enough.

In fact it will almost be necessary "cap-off" the course to hold numbers down. This would prevent too great a dilution of our class activities.

Our sincere good wishes go to other schools whose interests are similar to ours. May we all take part in this current upsurge of interest in Czech!

CZECH CLASSES AT HILL JR.

COLLEGE BEGIN 2nd SEMESTER The Czech class at Hill Junior College, Hillsboro, began its second semester Tuesday evening, January 21st, after a. month-long holiday break. Students were apparently eager to resume their studies since 26 students enrolled (the majority for credit) for the second half of the course.

Earlier, on December 10th, the class and members of their families enjoyed a Christmas social in the parish hall of Our Lady of Mercy Church in Hillsboro. Each member brought a covered dish and everyone enjoyed the delicious assortment of Czech foods.

The following week, to help ease the strains of the semester final, SPJST Vestnik Editor R. J. Sefcik and Mrs. Sefcik thoughtfully brought kolache (provided by them and baked at the Village Bakery in West) and everyone enjoyed a visit with them. The class appreciated the gesture and appreciates the support that members of the Czech community have given to such classes.

James Mendle, instructor, stated at the beginning of the course in September that Ctech is the third most spoken language in Texas after English and Spanish. To keep it that way, it will be necessary to step-up the Czech language program or within the next thirty years, the language could die out,

1975 Classes, such as the one at Hill, are attempting to stop this trend.

The class at Hill, Junior College has not only been a course in Czech language; it has also been a course in Czech culture — past, present, and hopefully, the future.

The age group spans the years from 13 through recipients of social security benefits. Each age represented has contributed its particular knowledge to the class.

When the course began in September, aptitude ranged from complete ignorance of the language to native fluency. Many who thought the course would be simple because they could count to ten in Czech and knew two versesi of "Louts zelena," have found that somewhat more is required to become fluent.

The course while titled, Conversational Czech, also teaches grammar, reading and writing. Verb conjugation, cases, genders of nouns, etc., sometime become the object (or is that the predicate nominative?) of hilarity as students, who often have trouble with English struggle to place the correct adjectival ending with the proper noun.

Rather than deter, however, the class seems to thrive on the concentrated work. Hardly a session is held that someone does not bring to class additional material — a book, map or article that might be of interest to the group.

Frequently routine study is halted while discussion is held on some pertinent subject such as a tour of Czechoslovakia, its food, proverbs or customs.

The class is hard work for some and requires ► intense thinking for many, but when the evening ends with the singing of familiar Czech songs, all feel that it is worth It and proudly say when asked, "Miij obor je Cegina I" (Submitted by Jo Ann Hixson) Wednesday, January 29,

LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE Dear Members, Sunday, January 5th, a dedication of the photographs of past presidents of our lodge was held.

Honorary Supreme Lodge President Edward L. Marek was the principal speaker, with SL LAM Curator Otto Hanus and E. J. Bedrich also accompanying. Both Mr. Hanus and Mr. Bedrich did the fine work of collecting and framing the photographs.

Brother Marek spoke of the chnter membership in 189'7 of Flag Hall. He also said "progress cannot be halted; the Society has grown with the times and the Society is in stride with the times and if we stop we will begin to go backwards."

He said that the different ideas of different people are to be put together to make a mold — a mold of mankind, as well as our Society.

He further stated that we of the SPJST are oriented to brotherhood, to be our brother's keeper, and we are judged of what we do for man by man and by God. That is why our responsibility as a fraternal society is not only for fellowship, but for the charitable aspects, also.

Lodge No. 24 is also proud, not only of our presidents, but of Honorary SL President Edward L. Marek, the deceased Charlie Navratil, Ben Zabcik, Leonard Mikeska; these distinguished Society members are all members of our local lodge. The lodge should praise these men for the work they have done for pur Society.

We wish to express our sympathy to Brother Edward L. Marek (not our Honorary SL President) who was killed in an auto accident on Saturday, a few weeks ago; and to the Frank J. Mikeska family in the passing of their loved one Our deepest regrets to both of them.

Mrs. Frank Psencik is on the sick list and we hope for her a speedy recovery.

At our next meeting a presentation will be made to those who will be receiving their 50-year pins. We have fifteen members receiving their pins and we would want those who have received such pins to attend the meeting also. At this meeting, all those who have and who receive their pins that day, will have their pictures taken.

The next monthly meeting will be held on the 9th of February at 2 p.m.

Also there will be a covered dish supper after the meeting at 5 p.m. All members are asked to bring enough food in covered dishes for their families and guests.

MRS. ANNA PAPRSKAR We wish to express our appreciation to all who shared in our sorrow at the loss of our mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, Mrs. Anna Paprskar. She was buried January 22, in Fort Worth.

Our lodge will miss her because she was ever-present at all of our functions. Mrs. Paprskar was one of the two surviving charter members of Lodge No. 92, and it was at her home that some of the first organizational meetings were held.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Paprskar, a founder of Lodge 92, in 1968.

Mrs. Paprskar was a native of Moravia, Czechoslovakia.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Anna Juran, Fort Worth; sons, Joe B. of Dallas, and Mike and Charlie Paprskar of Fort Worth. She had eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

God have mercy on her soul and may she rest in peace.

I also enjoyed the holidays for I took two weeks of my vacation during the holidays.

Now let me say that I believe it is time to start making preparations for our next SPJSrr convention in 1976. All you members start selecting the delegates this year for our 19'76 convention, and send the ones who you believe will vote as you, would, if you were there.

Then also start making adjustments to our by-laws — changes that will have to be made at the next convention.

Let us settle down and make 1975 another great year for our SPJST Society and let's go forward.

LODGE NO. 29, TAYLOR Dear Brothers and Sisters, Our last regular lodge meeting was held on Sunday, January 19, at 4 p.m., with our lodge president, Brother Edwin Adamek, presiding. Flag Bearers Kathy and Kristy Krenek led the pledge of allegiance to the U.S. Flag. We then had a momenii of silence for our departed brothers and sisters.

Secretary Catherine Walker read the minutes of the previous meeting which were accepted as read.

Brother Kovar, chairman of the property committee, gave a very long and important report.

Sister Edna Hunka gave the audit report for the fourth quarter.

A motion was made that all dues be paid before or after the meeting since it is very disturbing to all of us trying to hold a meeting.

The nominating committee was called on to give their report on getting a new youth leader, since Sister Amelia Pokorny resigned.

Brother Dan Marek was elected.

Sister Pokorny has devoted a lot of hard work and time to the youth club; I think seven years or longer. She will be missed by the youth club, but with her good heart, I know she will still help in any way she can.

We are happy to announce that the Czech Club will have their convention here at Lodge 29 again on Saturday, April 19th, with a dance at night with Jodie Mikula's orchestra playing. Keep this date in mind.

The rejuvenation of the interior of our lodge building will be voted on. The Planning Committee will present the plan of the proposed estimated cost of the improvements. Wednesday, January 29, 1075 LODGE NO. 35, ELK The January meeting of Lodge 35, Elk, was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz at 3 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was led by members of the youth club.

The president recognized our visitor: Mrs. Dorothy Eddleman.

Secretary Albert Banik was called on to read the minutes of the previous meeting. After the minutes were approved, Brother Banik acknowledged all correspondence he had received.

Brother Henry Breitkreutz, Jr., then gave a very concise and up to the minute treasurer's report.

Youth Leader Rosemarie Banik reported on the activities of the youth club. Most prominent on their list of activities is the volleyball tournament which will take place sometime in March. I'm not certain of the date. Contact Sister Banik for more information.

Members celebrating birthdays in January were: Amy Trussel, Dale Pavelka, Betty Brown, Jerry Pavelka, Darrin Banik, and Rudolph Zalman. We wish them all many more happy birthdays and to all members who were not present, but had a birthday in January, Happy Birthday, to you!

President Breitkreutz then called on the various chairmen for their reports. All thanked everyone for helping on New Year's Eve night.

Brother Albert Banik thanked everyone for helping him through the year and for giving him the opportunity to serve as floor chairman for the past year. A job not everyone is standing in line for! He did his task very well.

We were much pleased to accept into membership the following: Ernest Raymond Clemens, Ronald Gene Holub, Kenneth Allen Holub, Melinda Gail Nichols, and Jackie Lynn Nichols. We welcome all of these new members to come out to the meetings and visit with us anytime. Remember the second Sunday of each month.

Under unfinished business, the auditors gave their report and commended our treasurer, Brother Henry Breitkreutz, Jr., on the very fine job he is doing.

Brothers Ernest Clemans, Vernon Wood and Eugene Pavelka were appointed the new auditors for 1975.

The Special Entertainment Committee was also appointed. They are: Dorothy Banik, Doris Yarborough, and Henry Breitkreutz, Jr. Under new business, there was some discussion on purchasing some games for the entertainment of the members after the meetings.

Sister Lydia Vicha thanked everyone who helped with the Christmas party. Everyone's help was truly appreciated, starting with the children who performed in the program, on down to all the ladies who helped in the kitchen and everyone in between.

Brother Zalman handed out the premium refund checks.

The youth club followed with their drawing for the wall clock that they were giving away. The surprised winner was Sondia Dieterich.

After no further business the meeting was adjourned to a delicious supper of barbecued sausage. My'compliments to the frozen chef who withstood the cold day before to do the barbecuing.

I hope I haven't rambled on too much, but in closing, I would like to encourage everyone to come out to the meetings and enjoy them with us.

INTEREST RATE' ON LODGE HOMES TO GO UP MARCH 1st Temple, Texas 14 January 1975 Dear Members: In the recent Supreme Lodge meeting it was decided and approved that the interest rate to lodges making loan applications to build or purchase new lodge buildings (homes), or increasing their present loan for the purpose of expanding lodge facilities, be increased from the present rate of 5% to 6%, effective March 1, 1975. The Supreme Lodge has been making loans to lodges for this purpose for a number of years at an interest rate of 5% and feels that even with the increase this is being very liberal to our lodges.

Consequently, those lodges planning any of these improvements will have the benefit of the 5% interest rate, provided the loan application reaches the Supreme Lodge on or before March 1st, 1975.

President Morris reported on the following: TRAVET 4 & FUNCTIONS ATTENDED -- He reported that the last quarter of 19'74 was very busy. He gave a detailed report on the 12 functions attended the past quarter and stated that his travel calendar for January is rapidly filling up.

LETTERS -- President Morris read the following: (1) A letter from Mr. Sam Farrow of the United Fund complimenting our employee, Bro. Jerry Mikulas, on his services as one of the United Fund Division chairmen last year.

(2) A letter from Mr. George E. Thigpen, Superintendent of the El Campo Ind. School Dist., thanking the SPJST for the $100 donation to the El Campo High School Czech class.

(3) A letter from Mr. Patrick J. Nicholson vice president of the University Development of the University of Houston thanking the SPJST for the $1,000 Ctech language donation to the University of Houston.

(4) A letter from Dr. Marvin Felder, president of Temple Junior College thanking the SPJST for the donation to the college for the Czech class.

(5) A letter from a district sales representative requesting expense allowance to attend the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counsellors' (NAFIC) meeting to be held in Dallas on May 1-2.

Since that district sales representative had attended previous NAFIC meetings, it was decided that some other individual be given the opportunity to attend in 1975.

DISTRICT YAD SEQUENCE & GUIDELINES! Suggestions and guidelines to standardize the District YAD procedures in all the districts were presented by President Morris.

The members of the Supreme Lodge thoroughly discussed the suggested YAD sequence, guidelines

for selecting judges, and tabulating procedures, and made several changes. The District YAD guidelines were approved as presented

by President Morris and amended by the body.

LOCAL LODGE PROBLEMS — Report was made by President Morris on some typical problems he is often called on to correct, some of which come about as a result of annual meetings and elections. Other problems often encountered come about because lodge officers sometimes do not give adequate reports to the membership.

NEW LODGE BUILDINGS — Report was made on three lodges that want to build new lodge homes.

Director Pokladnik suggested that when we refer to local lodge buildings, that we refer to them as lodge facilities or lodge homes instead of lodge halls.

STATE ROYALTY — After due consideration, at motion was passed authorizing President Morris to hire a band for the State Royalty.

SPJST CALENDAR. -- Report was made that the SPJST calendar had been mailed out. President Morris was complimented by several board members on the biographical articles he had written on Brothers I. J. Gallia and J. R. Rubella for the 1975 calendar.

Discussion ensued whether or not we would have a calendar in 1976 and it was decided to have an SPJST calendar in 1976, with details on the layout and contents to be decided later in the year.

President Morris' report was accepted on motion duly passed.

State Youth Director's Report:

SYD Dorothy Massey appeared before the board and presented her report.

She reported on results of her work with several lodges in increasing youth activities and spoke of some plans to increase youth activities in several areas.

SYD Massey was allowed $25 for a social to attempt to organize a youth club in Lodge No. 10, Shiner.

It was agreed to furnish the SYD and each DYC with the magazine "Pack-O-Fun," and that the 18YD will periodically reproduce ideas from the magazine to be sent to the local youth leaders.

SYD Massey's report was accepted.

Wednesday, January 29, 19'75 Vice President Hejny reported on

the following: 1974 INSURANCE SALES — Ov 12 million of insurance had been written during 1974 and all districts met their quotas.

APPLICATIONS -- Report was made on the large amount of work and details involved in the handling of life insurance applications.

3,355 applications for $12,294,235 of insurance written in 1974 had to be reviewed before they were either accepted, referred to our medical director, or submitted for reinsurance.

REINSURANCE CONTRACT — Report was made that the reinsurance contract had been amended to comply with the vote of the last referendum raising the amount of insurance liability retained by the SPJST and not reinsured.

It was reported that existing insurance written previously and now reinsured would be recaptured to within amounts approved by the last referendum, as our reinsurance contract permits.

1975 QUOTAS -- The 1975 quotas set previously were reviewed. A request was made to cut the District V quota for 1975 from $3,203,000 to $3,000,000. It was agreed to leave the quota as approved in the October 1974 Supreme Lodge meeting.

There was a general discussion concerning sales and the effectiveness of our district sales representatives. Various general problems were brought out.

Vice President Hejny's report was accepted on motion duly passed.

State Field Manager's Report Brother Silas Smith was called before the board to present his report.

Several members of the board discussed various matters with Brother Smith and made suggestions concerning field work. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported on the following: REAL ESTATE LOANS — The amount invested in real estate loans had increased $826,491.28 during 1974 to a, total of $16,057,017.48.

Fourteen real estate loans delinquent over three months were reported and appropriate actions were authorized on each.

It was reporLd that 124 releaies were processed in connection with loans paid in full and loans having portions of the land security released.

After discussion, a motion was passed to raise the minimum partial release fee from $35 to $50.

ES PURCHASED—Report was made on purchase of $150,000 of U. S. Treasury bills maturing December 6, 1975. The bond equivalent yield will be 7.536%.

The purchase of the U. S. Treasury bills, as reported, was ratified by the Supreme Lodge members.

MINUTES OF OFFICERS' MEETING — The minutes of Supreme Lodge officers' meeting held December 6, 19'74 were read and accepted.

TMENT SEMINAR -- Secretary-Treasurer' Mikeska requested authothation to attend the spring Fraternal Investment Association 1975 investment seminar and was authorized to attend.

INVESTMENTS DURING 1974 Report was made that we invested in 107 new mortgage loans during 1974 the sum of $2,725,435.74; we invested a total of $743,437.50 in long-term bonds; and we invested $1,775,000 in eight different issues of U. S. Treasury bills on the shortterm.

It was reported that a total of over $5,200,000 had been invested during 1974. Several: members of the board commented on how our Society had grown and spoke of the responsibility involved in the handling of over 5 million dollars of funds.

LIQUID SECURITIES — Report was made on $1,025,000 of shortterm securities maturing within the next 12 months.

COMMON STOCKS—Report was made on our common stocks giving the present market values.

VbSTNIX REAL ESTATE LOAN APPLICATIONS — It was reported that we presently have $1,887,450 of loans committed and in process.

No change was made in the present 81/2% mortgage loan interest rate to members.

A possible adjustment of the 5% interest rate to SPJST lodges was discussed during the December 3, 1974 Special Meeting but action was postponed until this meeting. After the matter was considered and thoroughly discussed, a motion was made that the rate of interest to lodges be raised from 5% to 6% on all applications for SPJST lodge building loans received after March 1, 1975. The motion was seconded and carried.

It was suggested that a limit be set on the maximum that could be loaned to a lodge for a lodge building. Among the ideas expressed was the statement that each application should be taken on its own merit. It was also pointed out that the major portion of our new insurance applications are written by lodges having good or new lodge buildings. No action was taken on setting any limit for a maximum lodge building loan.

An application for a $150,000 loan from an SPJST lodge was presented. The application was to build a 100 by 145 foot lodge home which the applicants estimated would be valued at $190,000 when complete. After discussion, a motion was made that the application be submitted to the appraising directors for appraisal and that motion passed.

It was decided to require a supplemental application form with every lodge loan applitation.

DEATH CLAIMS & MATURED ENDOWMENTS & CASH SURRENDERS — During 1974 the Seeretary-Treasurer's department paid 373 death claims totaling $465,965.83 representing a sizeable amount of money paid to our members' beneficiaries.

We also paid 137 matured endowments for $148,399.93.

The sum of $57,386.34 was paid out on 235 cash surrenders.

CER'rtriCAT'E LOANS — 158 certificate loans were processed representing a total of $74,763.03 loaned to members against their certificate reserves.

SPJST GROUP HOSPITALIZATION An increase of benefits

13 was discussed to coincide with increased medical costs in the area.

The increased benefits would cost an additional $60.20 monthly for the entire group.

After considerable discussion, the increase in rates and benefits as proposed were approved.

The meeting recessed for the day at 5 p.m. and was called back to order January 8, 1975, at 9 a.m.

DISCOUNT ON 'A' & '13' CERTIFICATES — The customary motion on discount of premiums on 4A' and 'B' certificates allowed by !Article 36-z was called for. A motion was made to allow discount of 25% on premiums to all members in Classes 'A' and 'B' whose certificates were in. force 35 years or more and who have attained the. age of 70 or more and a 50% discount when they attain the age of 75. The motion was seconded and carried.

TRANSFER OF FUNDS — Authority for transfer of funds as allowed in Article 37-c was asked. A motion, to authorize the transfer of funds as provided in Article 37-c was passed.

LIABILITY INSURANCE Report was made that personal injury coverage was added to our general liability policy. The addition of coverage was ratified on motion duly passed.

MISCELLANEOUS Report was made that a handbook was being prepared for local lodge secretaries.

It was reported that a study was being made whether we would be required to participate in the National Flood Insurance Program.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska's report was accepted on motion duly passed.

Financial Secretary Zabeik ported on the following: STATEMENT OF ENSES Reference was made to the year-end statement of income and expenseS:Various items in the statement were discussed and all questions concerning the statement were answered.

It was decided that additional explanations be made on some income-expense items on the annual report in the Vestnik and that some changes be made and some new categories be set up.

A motion was passed that a comparative schedule be prepared comparing the income and expenses over the past three years

14 indicating the amounts for each year, and the amount and percentage of change each year for publication in the Vestnik. The motion was seconded and it carried.

VESTNIK SUBSCRIPTIONS — Report was made that there are 12,800 members receiving the Vestnik as of January 1, 1975.

REFUND TO LODGES — The 7% refund on net premiums mailed to 128 lodges amounted to $95 956.83. The 10c per premium refund check allowed to the local lodges for distributing premium refund checks amounted to $3,106.80.

NEW EQUIPMENT — Report was made that eight, filing cabinets were ordered for use in the Bookkeeping Department. The purchase of the filing cabinets was ratified.

Honorary President Edward L. Marek arrived, visited the Meeting and spoke briefly. He stated he especially liked the report that we wrote over 12 million in insurance last year.

Financial Secretary Zabcik's report was accepted on motion duly passed.

The written report of the directors was accepted as corrected on motion made, seconded and passed.

Legal Advisor Lesikar reported on the following: LOANS IN PROCESS — Detailed report was made on 48 loans in process.

Past Secretary Raymond A. Urbanovsky arrived and visited the meeting.

BRIEFS & OPINIONS — Report was made on seven briefs and opinions and discussion followed.

FORECLOSURE — Report was made that one foreclosure had been settled prior to the trustee's sale.

Legal Advisor Lesikar stated that the work load in the Attorney's Department has increased considerably the past year. He stated . that no one attorney could handle all of the SPJST work and the partners in his law firm all assist him with the SPJST work load.

He reported that Lodge 50 had appropriated $50 for the El Campo High School Czech class.

He commented favorably on the 1975 SPJST calendar and; complimented President Morris on the articles in the calendar.

Director Veselka — He commented on a number of items of interest and spoke about the need for promoting the youth program in several lodges in District VII. Report was made on several trips and matters attended to in District VII. He complimented Vice President Hejny on the letter he sent out to the local representatives which helped motivate those in District VII to make their 1974 sales quota.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:10 p.m. and the meeting was called back to order on January 9, at 9 a.m.

Director Hanka — Reported that he felt we had a very good year during 1914. He stated that those in the SPJST Home Office have all performed cooperatively and efficiently. He complimented the Insurance Department on the handling of new applications.

He reported on variousi endeavors in District V. Director Hanka reported on the directors' audit. Several items were brought up for clarification and explanations were given.

He concluded his report with other brief comments.

Honorary President Marek arrived, visited the meeting and spoke briefly.

President Morris read a letter from Sister Naomi Kostom, president of the Hlahol Dramatic Club at Lodge 88 inviting the members of the Supreme Lodge to the performance of a three-act comedy in Czech, 'Ponocny St`oura po lasce m2oura," which will be presented Sunday, February 23, at 2:30 p.m.

The comments in the Vestnik issue of January 8, 1975 referring to criticism of the fact that our referendums are not secret was discussed The referendum procedure was reviewed and it was explained that a secret referendum ballot is not possible since each delegate is entitled to the number of votes, depending on the membership of

his lodge. If each delegate was entitled to only one vote a secret ballot would be possible, but this is not the case.

Whoever tabulates the votes must know the name of the delegate and the lodge number to be able to verify that each delegate cast the number of votes to which he was entitled. Thus the ballot cannot be secret because those 'tabulating the votes could not verify that each delegate cast the correct number of votes.

A motion was made that we request the Supreme Lodge be allowed the use of the entire front page of the Vestnik to extend greetings in the Christmas and New Year issues of the Vestnik.

The motion was seconded and it carried.

It was agreed to use the same procedure in handling the workshop reimbursement and arrangements as was used in 1974.

Proposed adjustments in employee salaries were brought up for consideration. After lengthy discussion, the salary adjustments were approved as adjusted during the meeting.

There being no further business before the body, President Morris adjourned the meeting at 2:50 p.m.

Dear Members: A busy month was spent by each of you this past December and each of you helped to make our Christmas season a very happy and joyful one for many people.

My special thanks to all of you for helping when we went to the Four Seasons Nursing Home, Lodge 88's Christmas party, wrapping Christmas gifts, helping decorate the lodge Christmas tree and for being present at our youth Christmas party.

Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus A special thanks to our Leaders in Training, Susan Schenburn, Lynn Wahlberg and Bill Burford for the wonderful job they did in directing our lodge Christmas program. My thanks also to the youth who participated in the program and our choir director, Helen Hegwood, and pianist, Marian Kadlecek, and assistant youth leader, Margaret Allbritton, for being present at all rehearsals to assist where needed.

Our January meeting was well attended and I hope more youth will be coming back since we are going back to our Sunday meeting dates.. On Sat u r d a y, January 18th, the intermediate youth club went to the Garden Oaks Theatre to see "Birth of a Legend" which everyone enjoyed very much. On

.21 Saturday, January 25, the Teen Youth Club went to play Putt-Putt Golf and then to Kim Perry's house afterward for refreshments. Our thanks to the Perrys for having us to their home again. We all enjoyed it very much.

I would like to take this time to thank everyone for voting for me as youth leader again this year.

I have truly enjoyed this job and hope that I can do a better job this year and be of help to all of you. My thanks to all my youth workers for their efforts during 19'74; we have a lot of work in store for us, so please be ready when called on.

Our next monthly meeting will be Sunday, February 2, at 3 p.m.

After the meeting, weather permitting, please plan to stay and play a, game of volleyball and have refreshments.

If you know of a member who hasn't attended our meetings lately, please call them and make them feel welcome.

Dear Vestnik Readers, We held our monthly meeting on January 12, at the Grant Building. Annie Zabran,sky called the meeting to order, followed by the roll call. Then Vivian Vasek read the treasurer's report for the two meetings. Arlene Zak read the minutes of the two previous meetings.

Under old business, Annie Zabransky discussed the caroling that we did in December. Kathy Zak and Thomas Holy thanked the club for sending the (birthday cards to us.

Under new business, we discussed giving $5 to the March of Dimes for our charity.

On January 24, we had a birthday party for the ones having birthdays. Annie Zabransky, Arlene and Kathy Zak got the menu ready; Ronnie, Kenny, and Mark Sevcik, and David Zak were the honorees.

Prizes went to: adult, Mrs. Frank Zabransky; youth, Melissa. Holy.

The January cake went to Thomas Holy.

Kathleen Zak, (1-19-75) Reporter LODGE NO. 58, HUNGERFORD Tear Readers, Our meeting was held on January 12th and this was the same day as my mother's birthday.

At our meeting we discussed a money-making project.

Also, we will have a dance rehearsal at the Holmes' home on the last Saturday of this month (January 25th) at 2 p.m.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Mona Holmes, Connie Marek, and also to Jackie Marek who didn't attend our meeting because she was ill, and to my mother, Eleanor Spacek.

VESTNIK LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Members and Readers, On January 14th our youth club went to the rest home. We have also been working on several different crafts at our socials on Friday nights.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz complimented the youth club on the program on December 15 and she also thanked all who gave her gifts. She also thanked those who worked at the New Year's Eve dance and brought food.

We will begin working on our crafts for Valentine's . Day, soon.

We have not yet decided what we will do.

On Saturday, January 18th, the youth club went skating from .2 to 4 p.m.

On Saturday, February 1, the Folk Dancers are scheduled to perform at the People's National Bank in Belton, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Donna Kohutek and Janice Mesecke will also present speeches on the Czechs in Bell County, and on the history of the SPJST. Our next meeting will be held on February 2nd, at 2 p.m.

LODGE NO. 20, GRANGER

LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Readers; My name is Russell Bay and I am 10 years old. I am president of the youth club and I am flag bearer for the senior club.

We have elected new leaders for the club. Our new leader is Mrs. Spacek, and our assistant leader is Mrs. Nimtz. I like both of them.

We had a meeting today. We talked about another trip. The meeting took about 30 minutes. We cleaned up the hall for the senior meeting which started at 2 p.m.

Ours started at 1. The president of the Supreme Lodge came to the senior meeting. We had some new members present that day.

The youth club is planning a 'Valentine party. We plan to have refreshments and games at the party.

The senior club is planning to let the firemen use the hall for their annual barbecue, unless it is being torn down for the new one we are planning on building in the future. We have been letting the firemen use our hall for the past 15 years.

We had a Christmas party not too long ago and I won two dollars and a glass. We had a lot of people there. We had refreshments after that.

Donna Kohutek called the meeting to order by asking Jerrie Ann Skrabanek to lead in the reciting of the pledge of allegiance and motto. Kim Mikulas read the minutes from the last meeting and the roll call. There were 29 members present and two visitors who were Nora Skrabanek and Mrs. Patterson. We also have two new members. LODGE NO. 153, LA SALLE Dear Members, On January 13th, we held our monthly meeting in Lolita. Melany Drastata, president, called the meeting to order. Lori Heller led us in the pledge of allegiance and Stephen Hlavaty led us in the motto. A grace song was led by Marilyn Vincik. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Bobby de los Santos and Cheryl Wagner. Roll call and minutes followed. The minutes were approved. A treasury report followed and dues paid.

Old business consisted of Christmas caroling and a party and plans were made to go to a movie. This was tabled until February.

Under new business we planned a skating party for January 25th; this has been cancelled due to other conflicts.
