Congratulations are in order to these lodges for their progressive spirit, and the entire Society wishes them continued good fortune in the future. There are other lodges contemplating new lodge halls, but it would probably be premature to report on them at this time.

Although these new building costs constitute considerable sums borrowed from the Supreme Lodge, this is helping our lodges grow by attracting new members which, in turn, brings added diVidends in the long run to that lodge and the entire Society. This is also 'helping to strengthen the lodge system, which is very necessary to the perpetuation of a fraternal benefit Society such as ours.

1974 also marked the death of two Supreme Lodge Direotors, Brother Pete Valchar from District VII, and Brother E. P. Sralla of District VI. Brother Valchar was replaced by his substitute, Brother Frank Veselka of Corpus Christi, and on January 1, 1974, Brother Matt Vanek of Victoria replaced retiring Brother Paul Sablatura as director of District VI. Former longtime SL Treasurer Brother Jos. J. Koliha passed away in October.

1974 also saw the departure from our midst of other fine members and dear friends. Records indicate that as of December 10th, 1974, 352 death claims were processed and paid, with approximately 12 pending, This is only a few more than we had in 1973. We shall miss these members in our circle of friends and in our lodges. God rest their souls. Our thoughts also turn to the many elderly members who are shut-ins, lonely, and perhaps confined to hospital beds or nursing homes. The good Lord protect them!

SL Workshops Again in 1975. The Supreme Lodge is again going to conduct regional workshops in various locations throughout the state, just as we did in the early part of 1974. This has already been announced and appeared in the Vestnik for some time. We hope the attendance at these workshops is better than last year because we firmly believe that the information passed on will be of help to the lodges, in fact, experience since that time has already proven this to be so. These workshops are a valuable means of communications

for all of us and should be attended by the concerned lodge officers, if at all possible. You will be reminded of these workshops as time goes by.

Goals For 1975. I feel that every organization, and ours should be no exception, should set goals or tasks for itself for the years ahead.

I think the following listing would apply, not only for 1975 but in the immediate years beyond that and perhaps for some years to come.

These goals or tasks can be placed in four broad categories: 1) A continuing emphasis on increase in membership, and 2) A continuing drive to organize more lodges in areas needing our type of activity, and 3) Continuing efforts for more lodges to build new lodge halls, and 4) Continuing efforts to re-activate some of our dormant lodges.

1. Now, taking these points one at a time: Obviously, no insurance company, and ours is no exception, could continue to prosper without an increase in new business, in our case, new members. This work rests largely and primarily with our sales representatives, but not entirely. The rank and file of the SPJST must also assume some role and responsibility in this area, in talking about the SPJST, promoting it in their conversations with others, because all of us are public reactions representatives by indirectly referring prospective members to sales representatives. When you get down to it, we are all "salesmen"! We must remember that all the benefits we enjoy in the SPJST come directly or indirectly from insurance sales. That is our business. We can get all excited about al lot of things that

happen in the SPJST, but all of these benefits may be attributed to insurance sales and new membership because without them we would not have anything else. That would include our vast youth program, premium refunds, refunds to lodges, premium discounts to older members, having nice calendars every year, putting out a weekly publication, making real estate loans to qualified members at a competitive rate of interest, making loans to lodges at a low interest rate for the purpose of building lodge homes, and allocations each year to the districts, plus many contributions mandated by the Convention (Rest Homes, etc.). All of these benefits are derived directly or indirectly from insurance sales. Our primary and direct source of income is from the premiums paid in by, the members.

'These premiums (the members' money) are, in turn, invested by the Supreme Lodge. It takes good management and prudent business practices. These investments are varied and keep our solvency at a fairly nice level so that we can provide all Of these extra benefits.

But at the crux and hub of all of this is insurance sales. I think that we need to remind ourselves of this from time to time when we get caught up in all of the nice things and fringe benefits that the SPJST has to offer, because this is what the SPJST is all about.

2. We have made nice strides in the area of organizing new lodges in the last two years in those areas where there was a need and the conditions were right. When I say "conditions were right," I mean that there were usually a number of key people in a given area interested in the SPJST enough to

want to organize a new lodge. In some instances, these new lodges have been near older, established lodges, and in other instances, have been in areas apart and away from the main strength of the SPJST in peripheral areas. Regardless of where they might heave been, we need to continue this work of organizing new lodges. The Home Office tries to encourage this type of activity as much as possible and for the most part, we have been successful. This is a slow process and needs to be guided just right.

It cannot be done overnight or hastily. In some instances, it appears that there has always been a small group of people ready to launch such an idea and once it is launched, it catches fire and goes from person to person. New members attract other new members and those, in turn, will attract still other new members, and so on.

3. New Lodge Homes and Expanding Present Facilities. As was

pointed out in the workshops early in 1974, our experience and figures show that a large percent of new members are written into lodges that have nice lodge halls, or have a nice meeting place. It seems that nice meeting places and a steady increase in new membership go hand in hand. It seems that people want to belong to a lodge that has either its own lodge home or a nice meeting place to which to bring their family and friends and guests. This is a very natural and good thing. People tend to congregate and socialize with one another, and in some instances, we are fortunate to have our SPJST lodges as the focal and central point of these associations. New or nice lodge halls attract membership, there is no mistaking of

We mentioned the new lodge halls above; some of our established halls continue to progress by expanding and improving their present facilities because of increased needs and growing membership. During 1974, Lodges 80 in Holland and 74 in Lovelady expanded their lodge halls. Other lodges have made nice improvements in their lodge homes. (Details on these projects have appeared in the Vestnik). Some other lodges have expansion and improvement projects in planning stages. This is a very healthy thing, and the membership of these lodges is to be commended for seeing the need for this expansion and improvements. As long as we can keep moving in this direction, we will enjoy a nice and consistent growth. (At the same time, we realize that it takes something more than just a nice lodge hall to attract and hold members, just as it takes more than a new house to make a home. This depends, to a large degree, on the lodge leadership.)

4. The fourth area that needs to be mentioned as a goal, but which does not normally receive the amount of publicity that new lodges and new lodge halls receive, is the re-activation of dormant lodges. We harve too many such dormant lodges,, and the most challenging effort that leadership can undertake in the SPJST is the re-activation of a once active lodge now turned dormant. It is a very difficult thing to do, but it has been proven that it can be done.

and no activities for a period of almost forty years, and during the period of about two or two and a half years, the membership has increased over 1100% to almost 700 members today and with a very beautiful and spacious lodge hall, with almost every convenience and expanded youth facility for youth activities. In another instance in Central Texas (Lodge 18, Elgin), one of our charter lodges (1897) was re-activated a year or so ago, has increased their membership, and already has plans for a new lodge home. Here again, in both instances, we see the instance of a few people being responsible for the initial re-activation, but it takes the combined efforts of many people to cooperate in the final continuing effort. In other instances, we have been successful in reactivating and rejuvenating some lodges, only to have them go into a slump not too long thereafter.

In other instances, we have been faced with a very lax attitude on the part of the leadership in some of our local lodges who are satisfied with the status quo and happy with the way things are. In some cases, this is to be understood and it might be acceptable, however, if the entire SPJST followed the same attitude, it wouldn't be too long before we wouldn't have an SPJST. We must keep growing in those areas where growth is possible and not look for exceptions and excuses. You know, there is nothing quite as embarrasing and humiliating as having someone do a job successfully that you loudly proclaimed could not be done. An organization that is not growing is most likely standing still. And if

it is standing still, it won't be long before it starts going backward.

Officers' Elections For 1975. Most of the annual meetings have been held and the officers in the local units elected for 1975. The Supreme Lodge and the entire membership is indebted to these local lodge workers because they keep our Society "moving" on the local level.

We hope that the best qualified and most competent people were elected to offices in your local lodge. I might make the observation that as long as human beings are involved, we will always have differences, but the best way to resolve them is to sit down, reason, and talk them out and try to arrive at an equitable solution, remembering that the lodge is operated for the benefit of all the members, not, just a few. Fraternalists of good will can always do this.

All of us commit "boo boos" and errors in judgment. When you have made a mistake and are faced with it, it is far better to admit it and go on about your business rather than going to all sorts of lengths trying to justify and alibi your way out of the error. It takes a pretty good man to show humility and to say "I guess I made a mistake" or "I am sorry" when they find themselves in error. All of us are mortal beings and we should be flexible enough to learn valuable lessons from our errors and our experiences. But then, some people don't make mistakes, do they?

1975 Calendars. The 19'75 calendars have been, mailed out to all members on the Vestnik mailing list. We think the calendar is an attractive one and useful to every

household. If you did not receive your; copy, or wish an extra calendar or two, please notify the Supreme Lodge. We have a number of extra calendars on hand. The color work on this year's calendar is especially good and will be an attractive asset in any home.

It was an interesting and rewarding experience to have done the research and written the information contained on the back panels of the new calendar, "Two Giants In The History of The SPJST," articles about Brother 1. 3.

Most of the information was from articles written by these two fine gentlemen in years past. One cannot help but have a tremendous amount of respect for two gentlemen such as these to whom we owe so much of what we have today. I also feel if they were both alive today they would look with a great deal of pride on what subsequent leaders accomplished for the SPJST. I might also add that it was difficult compiling this information; it came 'back from the printer about . three times to be edited. I felt that no article of any length could do justice to the accomplishments of these two gentlemen. Both articles were, therefore, reduced to a bare minimum.

A lot more could be said about each ine.

Three And Four Different People.

The one thing that we in the Supreme Lodge regret about the Christmas Season each year is the fact that we cannot possibly accept all of the invitations extended to us. Sometimes we need to be three and four different people at the same time. I do want to say, however, that we appreciated all the invitations extended to us from the various lodges and regret that we could not accept all of them because so many of them were on the same date and at the same time. It was also my privilege to install the officers at some of these lodges during the Christmas Season.

Ap preciation. I wish to express my thanks and give recognition to the fine work of my fellow Supreme Lodge officers (and this includes the legal adviser) and directors during this past year; to

Dr. Jack Weinblatt, who, as our Chief Medical Examiner for only as few months, has nonetheless performed his duties promptly and in a spirit of utmost cooperation; to all Supreme Lodge employees and their loyalty to the SPJST; to all the people in the Youth Department involved in the youth program, from the State Youth Director to the District Youth Counselors, local lodge youth leaders and assistants, the youth themselves, parents, and everyone else involved. Our gratitude also goes out to the local lodge officers, district sales representatives, district officers, sales representatives, and all those who contributed directly or indirectly to the growth of the SPJST in any way; to all lodge workers who worked long hours around their local lodges and participated in lodge activities, because without this group of workers, lodge activities could not go on. Such members are usually the "backbone" of the local lodge, and they should be appreciated by the rest of the lodge membership.

Brother Hanus And The LAM Department. We are all indebted to Brother Otto Hanusl for his work and untiring efforts in what he is doing here in our Library, Archives, and Museum. He is very devoted to his tasks. We have had a lot of visitors go through this installation during the past year or so and everyone has remarked favorably on it. Brother Otto Hanus' work reflects credit on the entire SPJST. Editor And Publisher. We wish to give recognition to our editor, Brother Rudy Sefcik, and Brother Linn Pescaia of the Cechoslovak Publishing Company for their efforts in publishing our official organ on time each week, and for the overall improved look in our Vestnik. The Vestnik fulfills a very important mission in our Society and serves to bind the entire memership together.

Again, I am grateful to Honorary President Brother Edward L. Marek for his advice and counsel during this past year, and we wish him and Sister Marek well in the years to come, as well as to fowler secretary of the Supreme Lodge, Brother Raymond Urbana ysky. We are always glad to have both of these gentlemen visit the Supreme Lodge from time to time and exchange ideas.

A Lot Of Miles. Members of the Supreme Lodge (and editor) did a lot of travelling in behalf of the Society this past year. Your SL President drove an average of 1,000 miles per month (in Texas) attending SPJST activities and functions in 1974. Where and when these trips were made is a matter of record here in the Supreme Lodge. Texas is a big place! We don't know how our travels will be affected in the future!, what with the general economic picture, energy problem, etc. We'll continue to do our best.

I also want to express my sincere appreciation for the cordial reception at the many visits I made to our local lodges in the past year. My wife atnd children frequently accompanied Me. Many kind favors were extended to us and for those we are grateful.

There were not enough weekends and trips had to sometimes be made during the week. I have enjoyed them all and I feel that the membership likes to see their leadership from time to time. I have tried to be of help whenever and wherever I could, especially when requested to do so. However, I do not have the answers to everything; some problems must be solved by the good will of people.

Our SPJST Family is a good family and I pray that it will always be so.

We are likewise grateful for the many nice Holiday greeting cards received. We regret that we did not send out as many as we would have) liked this year. This, in no way, diminishes our high regard for all of you.

The Year Ahead. All of us here in the Supreme Lodge and at all levels of our Society look forward to the coming year 1975 with high hopes! for continued progress and growth of our SPJST. I am confident that we can and will meet the challenges that await us. We are asking the continued support and cooperation of the general membership, and with everyone working together, there is no doubt that we will have an even greater SPJST in 1975. We consider it a privilege to have served the membership this past year, and we all pledge to do a still better job in the future.

Top Ten Lodges. The last report I rendered to you on the standing

of the top ten lodges in the SPJST was as of 1 August 1973. I should again like to report to you the standing of the top ten, with the following comments and observations: a. Lodge 88 in Houston continued to show the biggest gain in membership during this period. b. Lodge 47, Seaton is now in second place, showing a modest gain during this period, and edging out Lodge 29, Taylor. c. Lodge 29, Taylor slipped a botch into third rank with a slight decrease in membership. d. Lodge 66, Waco continues in fourth place, after making it to fourth place in the August '73 report and not having ranked among the first ten in previous years. e. Lodge 84, Dallas retained its fifth position. f. Lodge 24, Cyclone increased its standing by one notch, coming up from seventh to sixth rank. g. The last three lodges ranked this time as they did in August of '73, except that Lodge 17 has registered a membership loss of 2. h. Lodge 154, Fort Worth slipped again from sixth position in 1973 to seventh in this report. i. All of these lodges showed gains in the last report in August of 1973; three of them show small losses in this report.

NEWSBRIEFS Brother! Arthur Joe Lostak, age 61, of Highlands, Texas, died Wednesday, December 18 after a brief illness. He was a member and sales representative of Lodge San Jacinto No. 91, Crosby, and was a member of the Application-aMonth Club for 143 consecutive months, in District V. Burial was in San Jacinto Memorial Park, on Friday, December 20th.

Many local residents speak Czech but are unable to read such foreign language Texas publications as The Nasinec, organ of the KJT (Czech Catholic Men's Fraternal Organization), The Vestnik (official orgar.. of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas — SPJST), and a widely distributed Chicago publication, Katolik, which offered its columns to subscribers of Novy Domuv, a Hallettsville newspaper that ceased publication several years ago.

Svoboda, printed in El Campo for many years, met its demise during 1974.

It was founded in 1884 at La Grange by Augustin Haidusek, the first Czech to practice law in TeXas.

Dear Readers, The familiar Old World Christmas sounds of Czech carols sung

by El Campo School students greeted Alois Piskor when he visited the Czech language class of Clif Wenglar, recently.

Piskor, who will begin teaching college credit Czech in January at Wharton County Junior College in Wharton, was impressed by the Ricebird students' pronunciations as well as their music.

"Every native Czech would understand what you are singing and saying," he advised the group.

Piskor, a 26-year-old native of Moravia in Czechoslovakia, came to the United States in 1972 under the sponsorship of the American Fund for Czech Refugees. He has relatives in Wharton County and Victoria County.

The ECHS students were told that Czechoslovak youth are "great admirers of American music and customs."

A Ricebird coed asked, "Do singers1 in Czechoslovakia use English or Czech words when they record our songs?"

"They usually translate popular tunes into Czech but they keep that great American beat," replied Piskor, an accomplished musician who has just earned his Master's Degree at the University of Houston.

Piskor revealed that school attire in his native land is not as informal as it is in the United States.

"But it seems everybody prefers American bluejeans and they even bleach them for that 'mod' look," he added.

Piskor graduated from Ostrava Conservatory in Czechoslovakia in 1969 and became a teacher at Roznov pod Radhostem.

A "unique need" was the basis for approval of WCJC's Czech 101 (Elementary Czech) by the Coordinating Board, Texas College and University System.

Czech is the third most spoken language in, Texas and 17V2 Per -centofhsudentaWCJhve Czech surnames.

A knowledge of Czech is also valuable in the study of the Russian language since both are members of the Slavic family which includes Polish.

An increase in communication

Registration for the Evening School Czech class is scheduled January 6, at 7 p.m. in the WCJC Administration Building.

Spring registration for regular day classes is January 7, 8, 9 fram 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tuition is only $30 for residents of the WCJC District. An additional $9 matriculation fee is charged out-of-district students.

The course carries four semester hours of college credit but students may also choose to "audit" the course.

Auditors are those who sit in on the class for the same learning privilege but do not wish to be required to take tests, receive grades or observe the usual attendance requirements.

A small $2 laboratory fee provides all audio-visual teaching aids available at the college.

"Look at most foreign countries and you will find it is mandatory to learn English," noted the state legislator who is of Czech descent.

El Campo High School is the only secondary school in Texas currently teaching Czech, a Slavic language which has been called a "key to learning Russian."

Hubenak pointed to, "the many Texans of Czech descent living in Fort Bend, Wharton, Matagorda, Brazoria, Jackson, Colorado, and Fayette Counties.

Seventeen and one half percent of the WCJC student body have Czech surnames.

Registration for college credit Czech evening classes is Monday, January 6 at 7 p.m. Day class registration is January 7-9, from 8:30 to 4 p.m.

Hours for preregistration conferences during these periods will be on weekdays from 8 to 12 and 1 to 4 o'clock. All classes will start on January 20th. The classes are: Czech 1712: Beginners Czech I This is a two-semester-hour credit course which will meet on the TJC campus each Monday night from 7 to 10 p.m. This course is for persons who have no prior knowledge of the language and for others who may wish to start at the most elementary level. Instructor will be Calvin C. Chervenka.

Registration will be on the evening of January 14.

Czech 1722: Beginners Czech II This is a two-semester-hour credit course which will meet from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. each Monday night at TJC's Extension Division Center at Taylor High School in Taylor. This course is for those who have some knowledge of the language, either from course work or practical experience in the language. Instructor will be David Mikeska. Registration will be on the evening of January 6th at Taylor High School.

Czech 1624: Beginning Czech H This is a four-semester-hour course which will be taught during the daytime on the TJC campus.

The class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday, 10:50 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and is for those who have some knowledge of the language, either from course work or practical experience in the language. Instructor will be Calvin C. Chervenka.

Registration will be on January 15 and 16.

-SPJ:3 r-BOOK TELLS OF HEGAR FAMILY MIGRATION TO TEXAS A rather unique Christmas gift received by children this year from a Holland, Texas mother was in the form of a book. It is a 53-page documentary and story of the family's migration to Texas. The title of it is "Journey with Frank Hegar."

The mother who presented the gift to her eight children and a,

nephew is Mrs. Mary Hegar, who translated from Czech to English the transcript written by Mrs. Anna Hegar. This includes family history and background, and experiences in traveling by ship, to the U.S. in 1903, and farming in Hill County. Pictures and documentary cover 103 years of the family's history, and maps and the ancestry chart dates records as far back as 1709.

Anna was the wife of the Frank Hegar in the title. She was also the mother of Jaro Hegar. Jaro or "Jerry" was 5 years old when he came to America. Both were Holland, Texas citizens in their later years.

The book relates the day-to-day life story of this family; some good, some bad. Religious history covers a period from 1600 to the present.

A chapter deals with Anna and Frank's religious life in America; another chapter tells of the 20 years after Frank's demise until Anna's demise at age 95. An often quoted Bible verse permeates the entire story, and pictures and bits of humor make the book interesting for children and grandchildren alike.

Mrs. Hegar's daughter edited the composition. The daughter is Mrs. T. N. Foster of Clifton. Copies were made by a Temple firm.

Mrs. Foster said they did not obtain a Czech-English dictionary until they had finished the project, but "Mother knew , the nouns very well, however, they did give us some concern; we used Webster's dictionary and usually, after several attempts, we would discover the right word, translating and interpreting the meaning correctly."

"We hope that the history in this document may be a bridge from the past to the future for our family to cherish. We encourage them to add their biographies and to remember the past generation with love and with respect," adds Mrs. Mary Hegar.

The following were reported as having been confined to the hospital: Brother Sam Portacci and Brother Arnold Sefcik. We hope for them a speedy recovery so they may attend future meetings. Sister B. Wytovak was welcomed at this meeting, and her leg is improving.

Nominations and election of officers for 1975 were then held. Offices still open will be nominated and elected at the January meeting. The installation will be held at that time.

Premium refund checks were then distributed to the members -)resent.

The next meeting was set for the second Sunday in January (the 12th) at 1:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 501 N. Delaney, LaMarque. Please bring a covered dish or pastry.

Prior to the opening of the meeting, our annual Christmas dinner was held. Sister Audrey Kaluza and her committee served a delicious feast. All the sisters brought covered dishes and pastries for which the committee expresses its ivreciation. Turkey, sodapop and liquid refreshments were furnished by the lodge.

Following the meeting a dance was given for the enjoyment of the members and their guests. Music for the dance was furnished by Jimmie Senseney and his band.

The winner of the red wagon filled with groceries was Elizabeth Hernandez of Hitchcock.

By the time you read this 1974 will be a memory and the year 1975 is enticing us with what fortunes the new year will hold. With the problems of inflation, recession, Watergate. presidential resignation and personal tragedies this past year, it would be easy to become pessimistic about the whole thing. How easy it would be to say that the country is going to ruin or because our old bones ache a little more, we should just sit and despair over our fate. With the birth of a baby on Christmas and the start of a new year, we get another chance to wipe the slate clean and start over again.

True, we will probably have some bad times, but they can't last forever. More loved ones will leave us but that is life (not death) and we must accept it. Personally, I take comfort in the many friends we have and look forward to the challenges of the next year with hope.

May all of you have a year that when it has ended you can look back and recall it as that "good year, 1975!"

I really enjoyed it and I think everyone else did, also.

On our sick list were Brother John Svetlik, Steve Svetlik, and uncle Charlie Hundle. We sincerely hope they are all feeling better.

Our congratulations to Brother and Sister Anton Gaas for the little bundle of joy. Their little son was born on the 9th of December.

dren and the in laws, which a bunch. Saturday was the only time all could meet and have Christmas at my home. But I was thinking about it all day and in my mind I was at the rest home with our Choral Club from Lodge 88, and my best wishes went along with them.

Lodge 66 Choral Group, directed by Barbara Stanislav (on extreme right), sang Christmas carols at the recent party. Mrs. Estelle Motis was their accompanist (on extreme left).

FAREWELL TO 1974 FROM LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON The Saturday night dance of December 21st, with music by the well-known orchestra of Leo HeMrich was the last dance before the New Year's Eve dance which took place Tuesday, December 31st.

Hosting the Saturday night dance were mother and daughter Celestine and Margie Darilek both looking lovely, as usual, and at their sides were Rudy Darilek, husband of Celestine, and handsome Johnnie Hoffmann. The dance was well attended and enjoyed by the guests.

Around Table 33 five couples were in a festive mood to celebrate the 45th wedding anniversary of Emma and Herbert Jarisch, they tied their wedding vows on December 24th, 1929. They were blessed with one daughter named Marilyn, who is married to Karl Jaksch. The two in turn presented them with three handsome •grandsons, Joe, Karl, and Robert, which made them very proud grandparents. By coincidence, Marilyn was born on December 23rd as a Christmas present to the newly weds and therefore she also celebrated her birthday along with her parents on their 'wedding anniversary. Herbert Jarisch serves on the Social Night Committee and Emma, his dear wife, is always with him. May I join your guests and friends in wishing you many happy years ahead!

The Birthday Club Sisters held their annual meeting to elect officers for the year 1975 with a delicious Christmas dinner served to a huge attendance. The dinner was prepared under the supervis-

ion of Birdie Hilsher with het, of other sisters and the expense for the dinner was defrayed by Brother and Sister A. L. Hilsher. The lodge is very fortunate to have so many devoted members who devote not only time but also, money to make the lodge prosper. To all of these good hearted members we extend our appreciation.

The Christmas program presented on Monday, December 16th, lured over one hundred children of all ages to meet good ole' Santa Claus. Before Santa arrived, a nice program by the youth was presented to the huge audience filling the Chandelier Ballroom. Sister Helen Hegwood presented her Choral group with many songs entwined with the Christmas scene performed on our stage narrated

by Kim Perry. Susan Schenburn welcomed the guests, and Mary Ann Kadlecek accompanied the youthful choral group on the piano.

The youth leaders deserve thanks for making so many children so happy: Saturday, the 21st, the Choral Club of Lodge 88 visited the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville, to cheer up the ladies and gentlemen who make their hOme there. The Czech songs were enjoyed and many were humming along with the group. Good ole' Santa went along, too, and he was very good and those who know John Zemko must agree, he spread joy all over the place, handing out little gifts to all the guests at the home. I was not able to go along with 'them as I had my family of two sons, Henry and Erwin, and their wives and my eight grandchildren and two great-granthchil-

The Blue Room Christmas party held on Sunday, December 22nd, was an affair to be proud of. The committee went all out to please and show their appreciation to the guests for the attendance in the Blue Room during the year 1974.

This beautiful gesture shown by the Blue Room Committee should boost the year 1975 to a high peak of attendance in our pleasant and sociable Blue Room. Chairman Abner Dixon, Assistant Chairman Frank Tilich and the smiling Mary Louise Kadlecek are ready to serve the guests. To make this party such a success it took many willing helpers, including the spouses, Dorothy Dixon and Mary Tilich, and also Margarette Allbritton and others, in preparing the delicious snacks to be enjoyed with the refreshments before; dinner, consisting of chicken, potato salad and green beans; everything was tasty and plentiful. The refreshments were served all through the evening without stopping, in goodlooking Christmas glasses. The dance began after dinner was served (miraculously fast) and dancing began at 6 and continued to 9 p.m. with music by Leo Heinrich. Everyone present had a wonderful time and we are hoping for a repeat performance by the Blue Room Committee next year. To all who helped to make it such a huge success, many, many thanks!

The long-awaited Czech play "PonocnST Stoura po Lasce Agoura" (translated from Czech into lish as closely as possible means: "Busy-body Watchman Is Blinking at Love.") It is a, comedy with 1pvely songs, so come and spend a pleasant Sunday afternoon, and if you wish, you may enjoy a delicious dinner at noon before the play.

The Concert Orchestra of Lodge 88 deserves a big hand and thanks for entertaining the guests before the Christmas party on Decem,ber 16th — they were a. joy to listen to.

Dear Readers: First let me say that I hope you had a merry Christmas and I sincerely hope that 1975 will be the happiest new year ever for you and yours.

I am giving you a short report of the progress we are making in the library, archives, and museum.

In our library, we have over 12,000 books for the disposition of our readers, at no charge. We have just received 90 fine books from Brother Thomas Mynar of Inglewood, Calif. which he brought with him when he recently visited in Taylor, and is considering settling in Taylor. in the near future. Brother Mynar donated many valuable items to the museum year before last. This example could be followed by many lodge members—donate your relics old books, etc., to our SPJST museum rather than leaving their care to your survivors where they may be discarded, as often happens. Since I have been here trying to develop our LAM Department, I have often heard these words, "My folks had a lot of books and things but when they passed away we didn't have any use for the stuff so we just burnt it up." "Country Critters" of USAF performing at the opening of Lodge 177, Academy's new home, on December 15th. displayed and they began to offer us their old relics. Each donation is carefully displayed and your name is entered in our Golden Book where it will remain for every visitor to see.

To our archives we are continually making new additions and it is already beginning to be crowded but keep sending your items, we will make room for them. In our 'archives we display lodge emblems, lodge record 'books, etc., from our 77 years of activity. We invite you to visit our LAM Department and sce what we have accomplished.

YOUTH SECTION

(September, October and November, 1974) Lodge

From The State Youth Director December 26, 1974 Dear Members: Now that the Merry Christmas is over with all the surprises revealed and the decorations put away for another year I hope everyone is looking forward to 1975 with new hope and interest for al bigger and better SPJST. We are all feeling the pinch of the recession, but so many of life's pleasures are free, such as a smile, a kind thoughtful word, and a true interest for our youth.

We can also help with the ecology program by having scrapcraft for youth projects. There are many throw-away items that can be recycled into useful and interesting articles. The youth will enjoy making things for special days in the early part of the year: Valentine's Day, Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Columbus' Birthday, Easter and not long after that, Mother's Day. By starting your planning now, you can have the families and youth save the needed articles for a project later in the year. If you would like some ideas, write me and maybe I can give you some help with suggestions. There are many books and magazines with good ideas in them, too, for you to get helpful ideas from.

The quarterly reimbursement checks were sent out before Christmas. I hope your youth club was one to receive a check. This report is $4 less in money from the last report, but with all the fall activities that have been going on, I think this is to be expected. With the attendance as good as it was during the fall, I believe our youth program will really grow during 1975, and it will with the continued support from the youth, parents, District Youth Counselors, youth leaders and assistants.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 17, NEW TABOR Dear. Members, We had our lodge Christmas party on December 7th. We had a covered dish supper. After we ate we had a Christmas play for the moms and dads. Then Santa Claus came in when we sang "Jingle Bells." We had to tell Santa what we wanted for Christmas and he gave us an apple, orange, gum, and candy. Everyone had a good time.

LODGE NO. 58, HUNGERFORD Dear Readers, The Hungeirford SPJST lodge held its meeting at the lodge building on December 8th. Peggy Kalina, called the meeting to order.

Mona Holmes led us in the song and pledge. The roll was called and minutes were read. Then dues were

After the meeting we went and sat down by the Christmas tree and sang songs until Santa Claus came. He handed us each two bags of fruit and inside the bags there were apples and oranges, nuts, candy and gum. Then we had refreshments of sandwiches, chips, pickles, candy, cookies, tea and coffee.

Under new business, we discussed the YAD and discussed a moneymaking project. The door prize winners were Ervin and Denice Kucera. We then exchanged our gifts.

The meeting was then adjourned and we had our annual Christmas party. We sang songs and did a skit. Santa came and gave us the goodies.

We then ate and visited.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 16th in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Moulton, with Rev. Robert Schmidt officiating. Burial was in the Moulton Catholic Cemetery.

Survivors include one son, and three grandchildren.

Hruska of Temple; his stepmother, Mrs. Frances Mikeska, of Temple; three step - sisters, Mrs. Margaret Petrik and Mrs. Elizabeth Jeter, both of Temple and Mrs. H. L. Ellisor of Houston; one grandchild and five step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on December 3, 1974 from the Hutchins Mortuary Funeral Home and he was laid to rest in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Jennings, Missouri.

Brother Inocence was born on January 29, 1917, here in the Velehrad Community as the son of Louis and Sophie (Krhovjak) Firasek. He was married to Beulah D. Terry. At one time he and his brother owned and operated the Auto and Tractor Repair Shop at Moravia, but later he had decided to go back to Missouri where he had worked before his marriage.

He was employed as aln office manager for Rail-Hiway Trailer Co. prior to his ailment and death.

Survivors include his wife, Beulah; a ten-year-old son, Tommy; a sister, Mrs. Victor (Hermina) Rybak of Moravia; one brother, Oldrich Firasek of Corpus Christi and also several cousins, aunts and uncles in this part of Texas.

Brother Pokorny was born in Taylor on August 3, 1918, and was a member of the Taylor Brethren Church and was a World War II veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Louis Pokorny of Taylor; a daughter, Mrs. Alvin Patschke, Jr., of Tay lor; a son, Harry Lee Pokorny of Austin; a sister, Mrs. John Mikeska and six brothers, EMil, William, Ben, Henry, Joe C. and Edmond Pokorny, all of Taylor. One grandchild, Keith Carl Patschke, also survives.

Funeral services were conducted at the Taylor Brethren Church with Rev. Dan Marek officiating.

Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

18 EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee, of Lodge Praha No. 29, Taylor, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincerest sympathy to the bereaved surviving relatives of our departed lodge sister, MRS. J. II. (Aunt Mary) ROZNOVAK, of 401 Shaw Street in Taylor, who died in Johns Community Hospital at the age of 79 years.

Mrs. Roznovak was born in the Tyler community on December 5, 1894, and had lived in Taylor for the past 12 years. She was a member of the Taylor Brethren Church and the SPJST. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. George Krueger, Jr., of Taylor; three sons, Fred and Eugene Roznovak of Taylor and Jerry Roznovak of Hutto; a brother, Anton Mikus, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in the Condra Memorial Chapel. Rev. Dan Marek officiated; burial was in Taylor City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ben Mikus, Jerry Wayne Roznovak, Marvin Roznovak, Dennis Johnson, Garry Krueger, Art Tomanetz, and Leroy and Jessie Cmerek.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge 59, Corpus Christi, Texas, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our dear departed sister, ALBINA STASA, of 1346 Daytona, Corpus Christi, who passed away on Monday, December 9th,' 1974 in a local hospital after a long illness, at the • age of 73. She was a native of Temple (the Seaton Community) Texas, daughter of the late Frank and Marie Srnensky Poboril, who were pioneer settlers of Bell County, Texas.

Born January 26, 1901, Sister Stasa was educated in Seaton-Red Ranger and Rosenberg, Texas. Before moving to Corpus Christi in October, 1940, she lived in Came-

ron, Texas. Her husband is a retired farmer, ginner, and builder and operated cotton gins in Buckholts, Holland, and Cameron. After coming to Corpus Christi, Mr. Stasa was the manager of the Farm Bureau Gin and owned rental property.

Sister Stasa was a member of SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi, having joined the Society (Lodge Svornost Jihu No. 15, Buckholts) on July 8, 1923. On October 6, 1953 she transferred from Buckholts to Corpus Christi. She was a charter member of the American Sokol unit in Buckholts in 1922; a member of the Czech-American National Alliance (since 1916) an active member of the Dramatic Art stage Amateur Club for 18 years.

She served in the Sokol gymnastic organization as a women's instructor (nacelnice) atl Buckholts, and also served several years as the district director of women for the southern district. She devoted much free time to these organizations and was outstanding in her ability. Her cheerful smile is gone forever. Her helpful hands are now folded in an everlasting clasp.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 11th at Maxwell P. Dunne Funeral Home Chapel with Supreme Lodge Honorary President Brother Edward L. Marek of Temple, and President of Sokol Southern District George Prevratil, of Dallas, conducting the services.

Surviving are her husband, John Stasa; three daughters, Mrs. Lillie Huber of Austin, Mrs. Olga Mokry and Mrs. Ann Peal, both of Corpus Christi; a son, Johnny Stasa of Corpus Christi; a sister, Agnes Blazek, and one brother, Frank Poboril of Temple;eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Stanislav Stasa.

Pallbearers were her grandsons: John D. Stasa, Allen Stasa, Larry Stasa,D'ennis Stasa, Sam R. Peal, Patrick Peal, Thomas Markus, and Donnie Loving. Honorary pallbearers were all members of SPJST Lodge 79 and the Corpus Christi Sokol.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 173, Galveston, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister, ANNA SCHOLKY, who passed away, on Thursday, November 7, 1974, in St. Mary's Hospital, Galveston, Texas, at the age of 89 years.

Funeral services for Sister Scholky were, held at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 9th, 1974, at the J. Levy and Bro. Funeral Home, the Rev. John-Vincent Rouse officiating.

Burial was in the Old CathOlic Cemetery.

Sister Scholky was born in 1885 in Czechoslovakia. She had been a Galveston resident for 62 years, and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Scholky, and dianighter, Pauline Rammer.

She is survived by two daughters, Lillie Scholky and Mrs. J. Y. Gober, both of Galveston; a brother, Jan Foytik of Czechoslovakia; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Adolph Dusek, William Werner, Emil Denke, Jay Gober, Johnny Rammer and Bobby Rammer.

in Youens Memorial Hospital, Weimar, Texas, following an illness of six months' duration. At her passing she had attained the age of 74 years, 7 months and 27 days.

Funeral services were held on November 23 at 9 a.m. from Hubbard Funeral Chapel in Weimar, Texas followed by a funeral mass at St. Michael's Catholic Church with Rev. Gerald Cernosh of El Campo, Texas, great nephew of the deceased, officiating. Burial was in the Dubina Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were! Bernard Kalina, Alvin, Gary, and Daniel Mueller, and Michael and Patrick Kreemer, all grandsons.

Sister Ludmila Kreemer, nee Ludmila Faltysek, was born on March 25, 1900, at Praha, Texas, the daughter of the late Ignac and Theresa Faltysek on November 5, 1924. She was united in marriage to August Krecmer at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Weimar. The couple settled in the Dubina Community.

Sister Ludmila Kreemer was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers Society and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 67, Schulenburg for 36 years.

Survivors are her husband, August Krecmer; a daughter, Mrs. Frankie (Hattie) Mueller; two sons, Arnold and Frank, all of Schulenburg; three sisters, Mrs. Louis (Agnes) Dybala of Houston, Mrs. Jake (Theresa Reuss. of San Antonio, and Mrs. Emil (Annie) Bartek of Shiner; two brothers, Adolph Faltysek of Moulton and Frank Faltysek of Ganado; eight grandchildren and two great-grand-children.

He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Delvin Taske of Blessing; sons, James, Gilbert and Robert of Bellville; brothers, Rudolph Engelholm of Bellville, and Arthur Englehohn of Rosebud; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, two sisters and his parents.
