THE GEditor COMMENTS

A very busy weekend! Yes, we had a busy, yet very enjoyable, weekend December 14th and 15th.

On December 14th we attended the annual Christmas social at Lodge Slovanska Lipa No. 66 at Elm Mott beginning at 6:30 p.m. where we saw so many of our fraternal friends and enjoyed the fellowship and another wonderfully wellprepared, tasty meal; a very enjoyable evening! We hope to have pictures of this occasion in the Vestnik very soon.

Sunday, December 15th, we attended the dedication ceremonies at Lodge No. 177, Academy, at 1:30 p.m. and stayed until 4 p.m.

The evening was very enjoyable, the day was beautiful and sunny and the attendance was above expectations. The program was good and we were sincerely glad for the officers and membership for such success and a perfect day. Under "Features" we are printing Supreme Lodge President Morris' address on that day, and also some pictures of the building and members, etc., which were forwarded to us. We plan to have some more in future issues. As all can see and read about in the article, the building is very spacious and, again we say, "Hats Off" and "Bon Voyage" to Lodge No. 17'7!

At 4 p.m., on the 15th, we turned our direction northward to attend the annual Christmas social at Lodge MoravAti Bratti No. 6, Cottonwood. At 5:30 we were again enjoying a wonderful meal, program (as was the case at Lodge 66), and sincere fraternal fellowship. We also have photos of this event and hope to have them in this issue, but if not, then neott time.

Yet day after day we hear the complaint that what this country and the world needs is a clear discussion of free enterprise that can be understood by the common man.

We can't see what may be lacking in the literature now available — if we knew we would write something that would be the most effective ever written.

We confess that we don't know how to improve on the job already done. The truth is that the same things must be said over and over again. Advertisers realize that constant repetition sells their products. They are in there pitching day in and day out and that is the job that must be done to bring home to the people( of the world the tremendous advantages of a government, an industry, a world operating on free enterprise principles.

The ancient Romans had an adage: "Repetitio mater studiorum est" . . . repetition is the mother of learning.

It is said that during Mark Twain's day as a newspaper man, he was editor of a small Missouri paper. One day he got a letter from a subscriber stating that he had found a spider in his paper and asked if this was an omen of good luck. Mr. Twain wrote: "Finding a spider in your paper is neither good or bad luck. The spider was just looking over our paper to see which merchant was not doing any advertising so that he could go to that store, spin his web across the door and lead a life of undisturbed peace ever afterward." * * You can learn without listening and you can learn to listen. Listening is like reading. You learn what the other fellow said and ponder what he meant. A good listener is both tender-hearted and toughminded. The tender-hearted listener gets the feel of the situation, is sensitive to the needs of others, builds emotional kinship. The tough-minded listenee knows how to tell a fact from an opinion, is neither a slave to unrelated facts nor at the mercy of sweeping generalizations. He is becoming an educated man.

Presentation involved the reading of a letter from SL President Nick Morris and Lodge 177 President Jerry Tomastik, thanking the Air Force "Country Critters" for their performance this day. He made the presentation to Master Sergeant Mel Parrish in the presence of Tech Sergeant Bernie Gebala, who was instrumental in the "Country Critters" performing today.

It is always a pleasure to be at a gathering of our SPJST family on various occasions at many places throughout this great state of ours, but it is particularly pleasing to be present at an occasion where one of our lodges is dedicating a new lodge home.

On that evening, there was already talk about some day having a new lodge hall and home for the lodge. Efforts continued at that time to sign up additional members, mostly through the efforts of Brother Willie Dusek, long-time sales representative for Central Texas.

About February 15th of this year the area had been cleared and on April 15th, actual construction of the lodge home started.

The building measures 100 x 150 ft. with a total floor space of 15,000 sq. feet. The dance floor area consists of 4,500 sq. feet. Facilities include a kitchen, youth room, nursery, stage with dressing rooms, and of course, central airconditioning and heating.

The pouring of the concrete foundation was done at a nice discount by Billy Joe Moore, Robert and James Tomastik and Harold Bland. Billy Messer did the foundation plumbing at a very reasonable cost. All are members of Lodge 177.

Since the first bit of earth was moved on this site, Brother Jerry Tomastik has been present to supervise and oversee the entire project and has spent countless hours at the building site seeing that everything fell into place properly.

Brother Tomastik and wife, Sister Pat Tomastik, please stand and be recognized, and let's give them a standing ovation! (Sister Tomastik responded briefly). (In a conversation just yesterday with a Temple businessman, he related to me that Brother Tomastik had been in his place of business a few days Jag o and was, as usual, going at a pretty steady pace. He told Brother Jerry to slow down, that he was going to kill himself, whereupon Brother Tomastik

shrugged his shoulders and was off again in a puff of smoke. That's just the kind of man Brother Terry Tomastik is).

Brother Tomastik contracted with 3-E Steel Company of Houston prior to April 23rd of this year in order to protect the price quoted previously to him. Jerry Don Tomastik donated all of his labor and time to the wiring of the entire building. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Malcik of Temple donated an ice-maker and gave the lodge ia good price on the entire air-conditioning and heating system, plus a Vent-a-Hood for the kitchen at a very reasonable and nominal cost.

Several Saturdays in a row the youth club, under the leadership of Youth Leader Sister Pat Tomastik, hauled bricks, scraped insulation off the floor, cleaned up, swept, moved furniture, burned trash and in general, improved the appearance of the entire area and did whatever was asked of them by Sister Tomastik.

Libbie Bartek spent a lot of time cleaning and painting the interior of the new hall.

Johnnie Sete& helped lay the hardwood floor and took over the eeneral construction and supervision and foundation work when Brother Tomastik was out of pocket or ill.

Brother Joe 14Iihatsch did all interior cabinet work at a reasonable price.

Don Sutherland furnished the stage carpeting at a reasonable price.

Bob Sodek furnished the tile for the ladies' rest rooms and office areas and carpet for the main entrance at a reasonable price.

Vice President Rae Lisenbe donated all the labor and some of the materials for the acoustical ceiling.

Buddy Brashier is laying the Formica and ceramic tile at a reasonable price.

Clifton Miller did the inside plumbing at a reasonable cost.

Cash donations were given by Libbie Bartek, Andy Ancira, and James Hershel Bland of Dallas.

VFW Post 108, Belton, donated the flag to the hall.

Mr. Don Thompson of Fabric World of Temple sold material for stage curtains at a reasonable price.

So my dear friends, you can see,

had it not been for the wonderful generosity of so many people, members and friends, this new lodge home of Lodge 177 would have cost much, much more than it did.

The lodge would like to herewith also publicly express their thanks to Mr. Robert Hunt, superintendent of the Academy Schools, for allowing the lodge to use the gym facility for winter meetings of Lodge 177. This was a big help to the lodge and the membership.

In addition to all of these people, we must understand that there are possibly some omissions because of the magnitude of a project such as this when so many people are involved. We have tried to indicate all the donors and certainly no offense was intended if anyone was omitted. The preceding information was gathered by • talking to knowledgeable individuals in Lodge 177.

Thanks are also hereby expressed to any and everyone who helped in any way with big and little jobs toward the successful completion of this new edifice. The lodge and community can be justly proud of this structure and it will definitely be an asset to this community.

At most of the past dedications of new buildings in the last few years, I have made it a point to emphasize to the officers and members of the lodge to involve your young people — from the very young to the young adults. This lodge has already proven that it likes to involve its young people and therefore no special emphasis need be made here today, except to say that this should and must be continued. You cannot shy away from your young people because more than likely, they will shy away from you. They need to be made welcome in this their lodge home, as well as the home of the adults. You will be needing their good will, muscle, energy and enthusiasm. You are already cultivating a corps of young people to assume leadership roles when the time comes. Do not, whatever you do, create a gap by isolating and shutting them out of your activities because in a few years you will be looking around for younger faces and younger talent to take this lodge forward — and they may not be there! So keep this in mind and remind yourselves of it

from time to time. Work with the young people in mind and they will work to help you; it is a mutual working proposition.

Dear friends of Lodge 177, the burden of operating these premises, increasing your membership, and running the affairs of a busy and active lodge now rests with you. .I3e mindful that the success of this endeavor depends, to a great extent, upon your ability to work with one another, respecting the rights and opinions of others and working toward one common goal.

We are confident that you are equal to the task, and may the work started and done by the charter members of this lodge within the past year or, so now commence to bear full fruit and bring you still greater successes 'n the years to come.

Some of your hardest and most diligent work lies ahead of you.

Operating premises like these, which will be a new enterprise for you, requires much hard work, but especially prudent and good mana•gement, and steady, cooperation on the part of ALL can certainly make the task much easier. Do not rely on one person or a small group of people to operate these premises. It cannot be a hit-and-miss operation. You will have to operate it like any business is operated; a careful watch of income and expenses and control of your lodge resources, and requiring regular and detailed financial reports to the members in your monthly meetings. If it is wisely managed you should have no difficulty.

Monday Morning Postscript Yesterday's opening and dedication at Lodge 177 was attended by perfect weather and a large crowd of

People came from considerable distances to view the new facilities and to wish the membership and officers of Lodge 17'7 well The entertainment by the Air Force "Country Critters", Taylor Czech Chorus, Lodge 47 Beseda Dancers, and Lodge 47 Youth Club Dancers was enjoyed by everyone.

'The auction was a big success.

The catered meal by Vencil Mares of the Taylor Cafe was enjoyed, and the service and hospitality of the members of Lodge 177 was most cordial and warm. All in all, it was a big day for Lodge 177, and as Brother Heller stated, he hoped that this would not be the last time people came to Lodge 177 and invited them for return visits. The job was well done, and good luck!

BEDRICH SMETANA MEDAL AWARDED TO JOHN J. PECH Thursday, December 5th, celebrating the "Year of Czech Music" honored at the United Nations UNESCO (The Supreme World Cultural Organization) and encompassing the anniversaries of Bedrich Smetana, Anton Dvorak, Josef ,suk, Oskar Nedbar and Vaclav Jan Tomasek, five Smetana commemorative medals were presented to five Americans by the Ambassador Dr. Dusan Spacil, on behalf of the Ministry of Culture of CzechoElova,kia.

For the festal occasion of the "Year of Czech Music" a special medal was minted, the Bedrich Smetana, Medal, to be awarded for outstanding contributions in presenting the Czech Musical Heritage as part of our great American National Musical Culture. held at the Washington Czechoslovak Embassy and attended by many dignitaries, congressmen, and other prominent guests from everywhere, Brother John J. Pech was the only person of Czech descent among the five American honorees.

Brother Pech of Houston is a well-known organist, conductor and arranger-translator of over 200 works from the "Treasury of lihe Czech Music Horttage," in America totally unknown works of Dvorak,'Smetana, Janacek, Fibich, Novak, Suk, Friml, etc., many of which he presented to American audiences in premier performances with his 130-voice Concert Choral Society of Houston chorus and in his organ performances. He is a member of the Ctech Fine Arts Society, and our own SPJST and Sokol Societies, and is well-known to many of our fraternal memberships in Texas and elsewhere.

This special award, besides the signal honor it conferred, had two significant personal meanings for our honoree. First, the celebration at the embassy opened with a film presentation of Smetana's immortal work "Ceska Pisen" (Our Czech Song) performed by the Czech Concert Chorus of Prague, and what was so meaningful to him was that he conducted the American premiere of this masterpiece, in the English language, in a performance of the CZoch-American founded Concert Choral Society in a concert presented on October 1st, 1967 at Jones Hall in Houston. The second reason why the award was intimately so significant to Brother Pech, was because his grandfather, John Valenta, sat next to his friend, the world renowned Antonin Dvorak as members of the orchestra of the National Theatre of Prague (Narodni Divadlo Praze) under the baton of the immortal Bedrich Smetana, conductor.

Already a proud recipient of another medal awarded to him for his contributions to music sometime ago by Pope Paul VI and presented by Bishop John L. Mor! ovsky, Brother Pech, besides his life-time work on the translations and arrangements from the Czech Musical Treasury and his many teaching activities is also the musical director of our Concert Choral Society.

This choral society, a non-profit education public foundation, was just recently so generously offered new rehearsal facilities by our Sokol Houston at 1314 W. Patton where a new chorus of 100-voices is in the process of being built up.

Rehearsals are held every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and anyone of our fraternal members or their friends, who wish to study and enjoy the recreational activity of the rehearsals leading to concert performances, is cordially invited to join this fine arts performing organitaUm of which I am proud to serve as the general chairman. After he first of the year, Brother Pech will devote some part of the rehearsals to teaching music theory and singing fundamentals. Applicants need not have any previous musical knowledge or even know how to read notes, but a regular and punctual attendance of rehearsals is compulsory for all singers.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters: The December meeting was called to order by President E. J. Hanka at 7:30 p.m. on December 9, 1974. Brother Billy Burford presented the colors and led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

The minutes of the meeting for the month of November were read and approved by the membership.

It was reported that two mem bers of our lodge had passed away since the previous meeting; namely Brother William Wiser and Sister Bessie Vrana. The members stood in respect of our departed mem-

bers.

Correspondence was acknowledged from Editor Rudy Sefcik and family, the Supreme Lodge, Brother Rudy IYybala, and the families of Brothers William Wiser and Robert Jaksch.

The list of new applicants and transfers was read and accepted by the membership.

Members reported on the sick list were Sisters Martha Alberts, Dorothy Ilibher, and Brother Elmo Chudej.

First Vice President Jeannette Walkoviak announced that a Czech class has been started at Hogg Junior High School.

Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg reported on past and upcoming youth activities. The youth harve been working on their an-

Initiation of new members took place at the direction of President Hanka. Sister Mary Tilich registered the new members. President Hanka initiated the new members and First Vice President Jeannette Walkoviak issued the charge.

President Hanka spoke briefly of the background of the SPJST. The new members initiated were Brother and Sister Bill and Mert Burns.

Favorable financial reports were presented on behalf of the various committees.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Leander Pflughaupt announced the upcoming events at the lodge and encouraged the members to participate. In addition, he welcomed the new members and invited them to join our activities.

Birthday Club President Willie Mae Wood thanked the members for the donations for their recent dinner and expressed her appreciation to Brother and Sister Alfred and Birdie Hilsher for their donation for a recent Birthday Club luncheon.

For the Dramatic Club and Choral Group, Sister Naomi Kostom announced that the Czech play will be presented in February, 1975.

The Choral Group will perform at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville on Saturday, December 21. A suggestion was brought to Vhe attention of the Dramatic Club by Sister Marcell Malak regarding the desire of the youth to perform on the stage. Plans are being made for the youth to perform on Easter Sunday.

District Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska announced the top sales winners for October were Sisters Della Kadlecek and Helen Hegwood.

The Rules and Regulations Committee announced the recommendations they have received and suggested that if any member wished to suggest a change, to submit it in writing to the committee.

At that time, a discussion was held concerning the date of the annual meeting. A motion was made and seconded that such annual meeting would be held Sunday, January 12, 1975, at 10 a.m.

LODGE NO. 79, CORPUS CHRISTI Dear Members, It is sad to announce the passing away of Sister Albin& Stasa, wife of Brother John Stasa. Sister Stasa passed away Monday, December 9th after a long illness.

She was 73. Heartfelt'sympathy is expressed by all members of SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi, to Brother Stasa and his family. Brother Stasa always reports to the Vestnik all our events and meetings, so, for Brother Stasa, here is a report of the 'SPJST No. 79 annual meeting.

Elections were held on Sunday, December 8th at the Sokol Athletic Center. Brother Frank C. Sacky is president with Sister Liftable Peters as vice president; Brother Monts Foster, secretary; Sister Mildred Elzner, financial secretary; and Brother Frank Veselka, treasurer.

Sister Mary Ann Klanika is youth leader with Brother Randy Sijansky assisting. After the meeting was adjourned the membership moved to the main hall for the annual combined SPJST, SVPS, and Sokol Christmas party.

The Christmas program began at 5:30 p.m. Our youth club did skits, poems and sang songs, which was enjoyed by all. ard,

outgoing officers and committees and a special thanks to Brother John Murphy on his efficient and dedicated service as our lodge treasurer for the past several years. Also, many thanks to the Expense Committee for their. efforts: Brother Chaloupka, Brother John Paprskar, and Sister Dona Hubenak; and to the Ballot Committee consisting of Brother Joe Lynn Krivanek, Sister Mary Ann Krivanek, and Brother Motl.

I will leave it to my successor, Sister Helen Paprskar, to report on the other committee appointments, etc., for 1075. This will include the election of the new Youth Leader and Assistant Youth Leader, which was deferred until the January 12, 19'75 meeting.

Another person deserving a bigthank you is Brother Charlie Prill.

His thoughtfulness in recognizing the good efforts of Brother Joseph Becan in writing our lodge history is much appreciated. Brother Becan was most appreciative of the generosity of many of our members present at the meeting. Brother Becan, one of two charter members of our lodge, transcribed the organization of Lodge 92 from Czech to English so that some of our younger generation could better appreciate the beginnings of the SPJST in Fort Worth.

At this time, I would like to congratulate two of our youth, namely, Paul and Mark Kercho.

They were both named to the `A' Honor Roll at Hurst Junior High School. Paul also had the honor of being selected to play in the All-Region Symphonic Band. Good work boys, Mom and Dad are proud of your accomplishments. Congratulations to all our youth — they are a fine group of boys and girls, and one of these days they will be the leaders of our lodge!

Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved. Correspondence followed.

President Zabransky then appointed the Exploration Committee, which is to see into the possibilities of building a lodge hall.

The committee members are: Erwin Holy, Linda. Mikush, Edwin Gallia and August Holub. Vice President Helen Zak appointed Alfons Holy to the Committee. It was announced to the members that Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris will visit us at our next meeting and discuss, with the members, the question of a lodge hall.

Youth Leader Helen Zabransky gave a report on the youth club.

Premium refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned.

The youth club then presented an entertaining and delightful Christmas program which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The youth leaders and youth members did a good job in preparing the program. The meeting was called to order

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Sadie Barlow. They were accepted as errected.

Treasurer Mary Tilich read a very complete report on the finances of our club. The Sisters applauded the profits for the year. It really takes careful planning and and work to make money on the iiirthday Club dinners. We are indeed grateful to all you good Birthday Club Sisters for your diligent efforts to make the club a access.

President Wood was presented a gift of appreciation for her unhiing efforts as president.

This being the December meeteg, we had election of officers. 's f er Della Kadlecek, vice president, took the president's chair for the nominations for president.

Sister Willie Mae Wood was nominated for president and voted into office by acclamation. Sister Della

13 Kadlecek was elected as vice president, by acclamation. Sister Sadie Barlow was nominated for secretary, but declined the nomination.

Sister Barlow did a great job as secretary and we say thank you, Sadie. Sister Mary Tilich was elected treasurer. Good for us since Sister Tilich is great in keeping our books and monies in perfect order.

Sister Lillian Finn was elected as English reporter. (Sorry about that but you will have to put up with my reports another year). Sister Frances Olexa, our very, capable Czech reporter, was re-elected Czech reporter. Sister Olexa is so !gifted with her Czech and English reports to the Vestnik; thanks, Frances! Ticket chairman is Sister Clara Jecmenek who is very good as ticket chairman. Keep up the good work, Clara! Telephone Committee Chairman is! Sister Sophie Hampel; others on the committee are Sisters: Mary Fusig, Mary Kalousek and Agnes Lesak. Thanks to all you sisters for serving on this very important committee.

President Willie Mae Wood expressed appreciation to Sister Birdie Hilsher and Brother Alfred Hilsher for donating the delicious Christmas dinner, the second Wednesday, December 11th. They paid for the complete dinner, even the delicious punch which Sister Birdie is so famous for making.

All you members know that there are some members who work for awhile and then leave it to the same old group to carry the load of the lodge. It is remarkable to have sincere members such as Brother Alfred Hilsher, who has donated dinners to the Birthday Club for 20 years; ever since he was elected president of Lodge No. 88 in 1954. The Birthday Club members are indeed grateful to Brother Alfred for donating the Christmas dinners every December.

Lodge No. 88 has so many dedicated members. We are indeed thankful for these good members. he Birthday Club is thankful to all you faithful sisters and brothers of Lodge No. 88. May we go forward in the new year of 1975.

Dear Members, Our last regular lodge meeting was held on Sunday, December lst, at 2 p.m. Lodge President Leon Zavodny presided and the pledge cif allegiance was led by Flag Bearers James Allen and Stephen Morris. Roll call of officers revealed all present.

On the sick list were: Brother Jerry Hruska and Sister Mollie Schneider. Since the meeting, Sister Agnes Bartek has been hospitalized, as was Brother Floyd A. Stuteville. Hoping you are well on the way to recovery from your illness and surgeries. Brother Stutevine, good luck in your upcoming surgery.

Sister Emily Stuteville read the correspondence which included a Christmas card from the Supreme Lodge and the mortuary dues. sister Ann Balusek was the only

visitor.

New members accepted were: adults: Calvin Joe Motl, Elsie Lula Ritchie, Frank E. Klinkovsky, James W. Fuller and Emogene Fuller and juveniles: Karen Diane Stewart, Terry Gene Perry and Dean Paul Perry. Welcome to Lodge No. 47!

The officers and chairmen gave their reports.

The subject of changing the starting time of our dances was brought up and discussed. The membership voted to have the bands start at 8 p.m. and end the dance at 12 a.m. instead of 12:30 a.m. in the year of 1976 and possibly even in 1975 if all bands agree.

President Zavodny and Vice President Jerry Pechal appointed the following to serve an the Rules and Regulations Committee for 1975: Brother Dan Balusek, Calvin Skrabanek, Bob Vasicek and Anton Vitek and Sisters LaVerne Vanicek, Ruby Bolton and Alice Banning. These R&Rs will be approved in the next meeting, January 5th, at 2 p.m.

The next item of business was the election of the ticket chairman Brother L. J. and Sister Vlasta Motl. The cleaning chairman and bar chairman elections were postponed to the January 5th meeting. The entertainment chairman for next year is the president of our lodge, Brother Jerry Pechal. If there are any members interested in the cleaning of the hall or being chairman of the bar, please come to the next meeting and learn the duties of these chairmen.

On Decembee 6th, the hall was decorated for the annual Christmas party and the youth practiced their parts for the program on December 8th, and also for the performance at the Southern Manor Convalescent Home on Friday, December 20th, at 7 p.m.

The names of the premium rebate check recipients were read by Sister Stuteville. The door prize winners were: Brothers Edwin J. Chlapek and Jerry Pechal, who requested another name be drawn instead of his; this was done and Sister Helen Merka was a winner.

The meeting was adjourned and the usual "happy hour" and lunch ollowed.

2 p.m. The installation of officers, the election of bar and cleaning chairmen, the approving of the Rules and Regulations for 1975, and the annual report of all officers is all on the agenda. Start the New Year off right and attend all meetings in 1975.

The annual Christmas party was a huge success. The crowd was large because the weather cooperated. The doors opened at 3 p.m. and the youth program was made complete with a visit by Jolly Ole' Santa Claus, starting at 4 p.m.

After this, the "suds" and eggnog were served to the thirsty people before the turkey and ham supper was spread. The annual Mr. and Mrs. SPJST plaque was awarded to Brother Franklin and Sister Irma Klinkovsky, long-time lodge workers. Serving as kitchen chairmen, working where they are needed, lodge youth leader and district youth counselor and helpmate. trustee, sales representative, audit committee member, and providing needed dance schedules and local rules and regulations for all active members are only a few of the contributions donated by the couple. Congratulations, Brother Frank and Sister Irma! After the supper, the crowd slowly left for home. Thanks to everyone on the program, Santa Claus, the caterers, and those responsible for the needed drinks and thanks to all for coming.

The members who worked gave all their efforts and a few gave a little more and, of these few, we are really proud! We had so many wonderful donations for our lodge and its auction; hopefully someone who has' a complete list will send it to the Vestnik so a complete recognition can be made.

Since this will be my last letter as the lodge reporter for our lodge, I would like to thank Editor Rudy Sefcik and his wife Maxine, for being so nice to me, and I am sure helped with my scribbling.

December 17, 1974 Dear Brothers and Sisters: Since we, the undersi gned surviving members are not able to thank each one individually, we are asking our editor of the Vestnik, Brother Rudy Sefeik, to be so kind and arrange these lines for print.

It is our sincere, heartfelt and fraternal wish, with this letter, to thank all of you, from the bottom of our hearts, who attended the funeral, took such sincere interest in our well-being, helped in so many ways during the extended illness of Albino, Masa, and extended your sympathy to us on that day, December 9, 1974, when the light of life died forever and the heart stopped beating in the life of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Albino,. Stasa, who forever

had been a sincere and lovingly dependable partner, caretaker and wonderful mother.

A special thanks to those who did their best to make our loss easier, who were so willing to help whenever they could and who accompanied our loved one to her last place of eternal peace and rest.

We feel it only proper to mention the consoling help of the funeral home, Maxwell P. Dunne Funeral Service. We wish to thank Honorary SPJST Supreme Lodge President Edward L. CHRISTMAS EXPRESS Dear SPJST Members: We hope that you and your family are enjoying the holiday season this year. Even though our nation is in a state of recession and inflation, we must observe that we are still able to celebrate more than in recent years. Maybe this national situation is good for the people in that it will allow us to really think what the meaning of Christmas really is. The commercial aspects of Christmas might keep the nation in economic harmony, but we must realize that this is not really Christmas. It is nice to buy the things that we would want our children and families to have, but sit down and think about the first honorable Christmas.

As a. fraternal society, the SPJST cam and does help bring out the meaning of Christmas. The Society plays an active part in allowing other persons as well as members of less fortune to also celebrate, and this is only done by the charitable side of the Society.

This organization of ours has

seen a growing period in its chartered lodges, memberships, and insurance sales. With this trend, the SPJST is becoming widespread throughout, and we must realize that the founding body set the first stone for this Society to not only better relations with its members but with those of the entire State of Texas.

We must still work together in the future as we have in the past and, with each new step, we must allow the expression of others' opinions to be heard. Working together can only better the Society with more increase in insurance, lodges, and members.

We must set an example to prove to not only the nation but the world, that people can accomplish more, make good of the bad, and help others in time of need; only through the compromising of our ideas and working ability can we do this.

Lodge No. 24, Flag Hall, extends seasonal greetings to all lodges and members of the SPJST and we hope that the New Year will bring everyone a better life and that the back bone of the Society will grow to new and higher standings.

Corpus Christi, Texas December 12, 1974 Wednesday, December 11th, we followed our beloved Sister Albina Stasa to her final resting place at Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Chrsti.

Both Sokol and SPJST lost a loyal member of many years. Sister Stasa joined Sokol and SPJST in the early 1920s and was a faithful member of both organizations for the many years that followed.

In her youth, Sister Stases was an active gymnast and she never lost her love for Sokol.

After moving to Corpus Christi in 1940, both she and her husband joined Sokol Corpus Christi and SPJST Lodge 79. Until her illness, Sister Stasa was among our hardest workers and even after becoming ill, she was one of our strongest supporters. Although she was unable to attend the meetings, she was always there in spirit, represented by her husband, Brother John Stasa.

Sister Annie Peal has followed in her mother's footsteps, giving countless hours to Sokol Corpus Christi and Lodge 79.

Sister Albina Stasa passed away on Monday, December 9th, at 8:20 a.m. Survivors include her husband, John Stasa; three daughters, Mrs. Lillie Huber, Mrs. Olga

DISTRICT VI SALES REPRESENTATIVE'S REPORT Our November sales were better than our October sales, so on December 1st, our total sales were $612,000. This means we must work harder than ever because, as of this writing, our total sales are $616,000 leaving us $134,000 short of our goal of $750,000. Since we are this close to meeting our quota, let's keep going so that by the end of the year we will have our quota.

State Field Manager Silas Smith and his lovely wife, Jeanette, came from Waco, and we held a class in Floresville on December 4th, and on December 5th at Corpus. I want to thank each sales representative who made a special effort to attend these classes. Brother Smith explained the new rules and the new forms which are now to be used. Everybody seemed to benefit, because they got all the answers to their questions, too.

We have been busy preparing for Christmas, working on projects, and practicing on our Chr program.

Our program was held Sunday, December 15th. All the youth club members did a fine job. I am very proud of you.

Dear Readers, Our meeting was brought to order at 2:20 p.m. Sunday, December 8th, by President Cindy Heim's.

First we collected dues. Then the minutes were read by Kelly Hermis and approved. Our balance of November 30, 1974 was $224.30.

Under new business a skating party is in the planning stage for January. We had three guests and one was Maxine Pavliska, our Dis-

After the meeting, we rehearsed for our Christmas program. Then we were treated to hot dogs and chips, donated by Jerry Elzner.

On Sunday, December 15th, some of the members of Lodge No. 47, attended a dedication for the opening of the new Lodge No. 1T7 building at Academy. Lodge No. 47's Beseda dancers performed and also some of the youth from Lodge No. 47 performed a dance.

On December 20th, we went caroling at the Southern Manor Rest Home in Temple.

CHIP Chip Hejl, 13-year-old son of the Albert Hejls who live on Rosebud Route 1, is an incessant football player, and he has the trophies to prove this fact.

Chip has entered the Ford-sponsored Punt, Pass and Kick contest held in Rosebud for the past six years. He placed first each year, earning a position in area competition. He placed first in area competition in 1973 and 1794 which

allowed him to compete in the zone competition held in Dallas, placing second and third respectively. Chip carries out his athletic ability by quarterbacking the Rosebud-Lott Junior High School football team.

Chip, his parents, and sister are all members of Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee, of Lodge Needville, SPJST No. 81, at Needville, in behalf of our lodge membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our dear departed brother, LUDVIK SILHAVY, who passed away on Monday, November 5th, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Houston, at the age of 50.

He was a mechanic forman for Superior Oil Co., a past commander of the American Legion Post 271, a charter member of the Rosenberg Chamber of Commerce, a member of the 40-and-8 Honor Society of the American Legion, and of the SPJST. Survivors include Mrs. Ellen Silhavy, wife; one son, Victor Silhavy of Richmond; two daughters, Mrs. Verna Lipinski and Miss Karen Silhavy, both of Rosenberg; three brothers, Joe Silhavy of Needville, John Silhavy of Rosenberg, and Frank Silhavy of McAllen; two sisters, Mrs. Millie Hartsfield and Mrs. Lydia Orsak, both of Needville ilnd one granddaughter, Ericka Dawn Silhavy.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 7th, at 2 p.m. from the Holy Rosary Church in Rosenberg with the Rev. Bill Bartniski officiating. Burial was in the Garden of Gethsemane East, in Greenlawn.
