We are going to attempt to run all of the SYAD pictures in this issue and, therefore, cannot limit them to only the Youth Section.

If space does not permit, we will have to run the remainder iii the next issue.

Your Attention, Please! In this issue we call our readers' attention to a very timely article by Brother Calvin Chervenka, in the "Features" section: All college students, especially of Czech-Moravian descent, are advised to carefully read it. Also, there are articles about the dedication of Lodge No. 81, Needvilles new home building, and the classes beginning at the University of Houston. Robert Eubank's article and letter arrived too late last week for publication, but it appears in this issue. Now is the time for all involved in the Czech language program at the U of H to close ranks and make a good success of the courses being offered there. Titles mean very little; it is the final result that matters.

For several years Dist. II membership has combined its fall meeting with a recreational day, which took place again on August 25th at the American Legion Hall in Taylor. Thus far, it has proven to be beneficial for the parents and children alike.

District II President Dan Grossmann (80) is to be complimented for conducting a brief and informative meeting. Also, it was obvious that the adherence to limited reports and other pertinent information resulted in an attentive audience, which left enough time or the seventy-four youth and leaders to demonstrate two dances they learned at camp.

During the youth aictivities participation on the park's premises, the older membership was entertained by Mr. Helmer Dahl on his Baldwin organ, which added much attraction to the evening's atten-

The district officers officially announced their district meetings for next year: District II spring meeting on April 20th, 1975, with host Lodge 177, Academy; and District II fall meeting, August 24th, 1975, with Lodge 29, Taylor hosting the event.

It was gratifying to be among the membership of District II, and we thank them for their warm hospitality. * State Royalty — This much-talked-about event is rapidly approaching. For the candidates, consisting of seven kings and seven queens with their dukes and duchesses, who will be challenging each other for the royal title on September 8th at Lodge 84, located at 2625 Floyd Street, Dallas, this is indeed a time of anticipation and excitement.

It is the editor's wish that all district candidates will be represented because this is the first time in several years that each district has a king candidate in the royalty competition. All candidates will be judged on appearance, personality, posture and poise, speech and overall merit. Try to attend the highlight of the State Royalty and witness the ceremonies •at the coronation of the new 19741975 King and Queen.

NEW HOME OF LODGE NO. 177, PROGRESSING NICELY As a follow-up to our report in the Vestnik issue of June 26th, 1974, on the building program for the new lodge home of Lodge 1'77, Academy , we made another trip down to the lodge site on Friday, August 23rd to see and photograph the progress on the new lodge hall.

We were pleasantly surprised.

When we first visited the site on June 7th, we saw only the forms for the foundation, some pipe being, laid and gravel as a foundation for the concrete. A lot of work has taken place since then, and what We saw on August 23rd was the walls of the building completed, plus the concrete slab ,. The work with the insulation had also begun.

We also saw the outline of where the dance floor is to be. Upon entering the building the thing that impresses a person the most is the vast expanse of space and roominess.

As previously reported, the new building measures 100' x 150', with a total floor space of 15,000 square feet. The dance floor space will consist of 4,500 square feet.

Work will now commence on finishing the inside, to include a hardwood floor', air-conditioning and heating, stage, kitchen, dressing rooms, youth room, refreshment bar and skating rink.

The site and location of the new home of Lodge 177 rest on 4.306 acres and is approximately ten miles south of Temple, just off Hwy. 95 in, the community of Academy and just south of the Little River-Academy intersection.

Brother Jerry Tomastik has been very busy seeing to and supervising the entire project and has spent many, many hours at the site. He happily told us that the date for the opening and dedication has been set for December 15th, 1974.

Brother Tomastik, his fellow officers and membership of Lodge 177 are to be commended again for their fine work and enthusiasm, and all of us are looking forward to the completion, opening and dedication of this new addition to the SPJST on December 15th.

TEXAS CZECHS HAVE VALUABLE NATURAL RESOURCE Webster's dictionary says that a resource is a "new or a reserve source of supply or support." It also defines "natural" as "growing as a native and without cultivation."

Usually when we think of a natural resource, we think of those valuable and material things such as petroleum reserves, coal, gold, and the other metal ores, forests, and streams. The degree of political independence and the economical well-being of the country usually are highly dependent upon its supply of natural resources.

But all natural resources are not tangible, material things. For example, our pioneering spirit, our love of democracy, and our natural patriotism cannot be held in one's hand; yet these intangible supports, or strengths, have helped hold our union together for almost 200 years.

Our moral values, our sense of right and wrong, justice and injustice, our love of family, our religious faith, our humanity toward one another and all the many MANY

other things we call "the American Way of Life," are all intangible natural resources of our country.

Another resource) of this country is the high regard we hold for education. Our willingness to spend a considerable portion of our wealth for the education of all has helped to keep our country free and has helped to keep it in the forefront on all frontiers of pure and applied `snowledge.

After the Russians placed the first artificial earth satelite in orbit in 1957, many believed we were behind them in scientific knowledge and the congress reacted by passing the National Defense Education Act (NDEA) of 1958. This law provided federal funds to strengthen instruction in the sciences, mathematics, and critical languages at all levels.

Our leaders realized that if we were to compete successfully with the Russians, we must strengthen eur ability to communicate ideas with other nations as well as to improve our science and technology for competing with the Russians in 4pace exploration.

The Czech language for many years has been designated as a critical language" by our government, principally because it is a stepping stone to Russian and the other Slavic (Slavonic) languages of the many Eastern European o un tries.

But do you know how long it takes to learn fluent Czech, or any other first foreign language? Although the U. S. Air Force has had considerable success with accelerated language schools, it normally takes about two full years of colle g e to learn the fundamentals of a language; and it takes at least another two years with much conversational experience to become really fluent in a foreign

language.

If a knowledge of Czech is of critical importance to our country and if it requires long study with attendant high costs to learn Czech fluently, would it not then be a very valuable natural resource if come of our Texans of Czech descent already had within their subconscious a considerable knowledge of Czech. Well this is precisely the case. There are many Texans of Czech descent who spoke Czech when they were children and acquired natural and permanently many of the linguistic capabilities which are so difficult for adults to learn for the first time in the classroom.

Even though these persons may not have spoken Czech during their intervening teenage years and may feel that they have forgotten the language, their subconscious has not forgotten. If they 'will but enroll for a Czech course, these students will exhibit a remarkable ability to distinguish the gender and apply the proper declension endings to nouns, to properly accent words, to make the long vowel sounds, and to pronounce the soft consonants which may be difficult for those who have no prior knowledge of the language.

It is true that reading may prove to be somewhat difficult at first for someone who has only a meager speaking knowledge of Czech; however, this difficulty is of short duration, and it does not compare at all with the problems of one who starts with no prior knowledge of the language. I am sure that all other teachers of Czech will agree with me that the knowledge that many of our Czech Texans possess is a tremendous natural resource.

Those persons who possess this natural resource should avail themselves of the many current opportunities of enrolling in al Czech class in order to utilize and capitalize on this natural resource.

If we of the Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT) can be of help to any of you in enrolling in a Czech olass or in getting a Czech class started in your community, please do not hesitate to call on us.

FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL SEPTEMBER 12-15

TEXAS

at Hemisfair Plaza, San Antonio Over 100 Czech-Texans from Dallas, Cornal, Hexer, and Lavaca counties will be among the 3,600 participants to appear at Texas' Biggest Block Party, the third annual Texas Folklife Festival, September 12-15.

The celebration, designed to show how Texas' 26 ethnic groups have fun, is sponsored by the UTSA. Institute of Texas Cultures and takes place on 15 acres at HemisFair Plaza in San Antonio.

According to Czech festival ambassadors Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik, Dallas; Nick A. Morris, Temple; and Edward J. Kadlecek, Jr., New Braunfels; the Czech participation ranges from folk dances, outstanding singers and bands, to foods and games.

The New Braunfels Czechfest will be represented by Champion Beseda dancers of the SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas. Performing Sunday, Sept.

15th will be Paul Pokladnik, Mark Prachyl, Ronnie, Cheryl and Vicki Petr, and Karl, Christi, and Cindy Mandak.

Accompanying the young dancers will be adult sponsors: Mr. and Mrs. Emil Petr, Mr. and Mrs. George Mandak, and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Petr of Dallas.

Festival ambassador Edward J. Kadlecek, Jr., New Braunfels, will play the accordion as his family sings. Performing September 12-15 with Kadlecek will be Mrs. Kadlecek and children Edward J. LII, Karen and Nancy Kadlecek.

An 18-member San Antonio Czech Choir, directed by Don Netek, will entertain at the Hallettsville Czech booth and on the new ethnic entertainment stage, September 14-15. Pianist Emily Hay -elkawicompanythecoirnsisting of Mr. and Mrs. John Havelka, Don Netek, Adolf Popp, Ernie Popp, Anton Simek, Joe Sruber, Joe Stryk, and. George Vacek.

Henry Joe Henke, Jr., will bring 34 Hallettsville Cmechs who plan to serve klobasniky (Czech sausage wrapped in kolache dough), and sweet kolache with posipka (top= ping). Food chairmen are Henry "Bootsie" Ehler and G. H. Gerdes;

drink chairman is Roland C. Campbell; decorations chairman is Laddie Bucek; workers' chairpersons are Tommy Grahmann and Bolton Shirley.

Representing Hallettsville will be Laddie Bucek, G. H. Entertaining September 14th will be the Hallettsville Czech Band: The Hobos consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Muhlstein, Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Petru, Eugene Klekar, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Gerlich, and Mr. and Mrs. Dominic Konvicka.

The Hallettsville State Domino Tournament, one of 20 area festivals participating at the state festival, will offer visitors daily domino tournaments.

New for 1974 will be the Hallett'sville State Championship Fiddlers' Frolics which attracts top Texas fiddlers ranging in age from 4 years to 90-year-old veterans.

Representing the Fiddlers' Frolics will be Gene and the Westerners on September 15. Performing will be Joe and Dorothy Svoboda, Bill and Gladys Hanzehnan, Warren and Marilyn Bitterly, Dennisand Darlene Shimek, and Gene and Lucille Drozd of Hallettsville.

Visitors to the Texas Folkiife Festival may tour the Institute Of Texas Cultures, sponsor of the event, to see exhibits depicting the 26 ethnic groups who have contributed to Texas' history, enjoy a multi-media dome show every half hour, and wander out over the 16 acres of live festival fun. There will be constant entertainment on seven stages; the foods of 24 nations; and over 53 art and craft demonstrations.

The festival will be open from 5 to 11 p.m., September 12-13; from noon to 9 p.m. September 14-15.

Visitors may ride free shuttle buses from downtown parking lots to the festival sits.

LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Now that school bells have rung, many mothers (and grandmothers) are probably giving small signs of gratitude to modern education processes that require a nine month school year and a. three month vacation, rather than the other way around. As one anonymous grandmother put it, "It's so nice to have the little angels come to visit and even nicer to see the

little devils go home."

Our first circle meeting WC (without children) for the fall will be Thursday, September 12th, at 10:30 a.m. at the lodge. Hostesses will be Mary Ann Krivanek, Eva Dockery, Marie Tesar, Mary Saldona, Marie Frill and Mrs. Becan.

Everyone is urged to attend since discussion will be held on the upcoming family night, planned for October 10th.

The August meeting was well attended with many new faces including guests Mary Kolenovsky of Dallas, Frances Kaluza of Lamarque, Helen Paprskar, Frances Jaworski, Mary Botik and Mary Pavey.

We hope to number some of them as new members at our next meeting.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to members Mrs. Helen Zich, who celebrated 95 years of life in August; what wonderful memories and experiences she must have.

On the sick list in August were Joe Palasek who is home after surgery, John Murphy, and Bob Easley. Vice president of the circle, Millie Wruble, was also reported undergoing tests and we wish her good results.

Members reported on the sick list were Brothers Franklin Bray jaiksch and Victor Mi--enc,Robert keska, Jr. and Sisters Viola Cox and Marlene Caraway.

Youth Leader Mary France Wahlberg announced past and upcoming youth aictivities. She said that the State Youth Achievement Day would be held on Sunday, August 18th, in Temple, and that twenty youths from our lodge would participate as first place district winners. Sister Wahlberg then presented Sister Jode Elzner and Brother Kenneth Broz, who represented Lodge 88 and District V as king and queen. Following their introductions, Sister Elsner and Brother Broz each presented an inspiring speech which they prepared regarding the SPJST. Favorable financial reports were given on behalf of the various committees.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Leander Pfiughaupt announced the upcoming activities at the lodge and encouraged the members to participate.

For the Dramatic Club and Choral Group, Brother T. S. Kostom announced that the English play, which is a hilarious comedy, will be presented Sunday, September 29. Rehearsals are presently also taking place for a Czech play which will be presented later in the year. The Choral Group is taking a vacation for the month of August.

They are anxiously awaiting the resuming of their rehearsals.

District Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska, announced the recent Texas Fraternal Congress contest winners. They are Sisters Della Kadlecek, Helen Hegwood, Patsy Baca, Tillie Helmearnp, and Agnee Lesak.

Historian Birdie Hilsher presented the members with an interesting and informative history of our lodge covering the year 1911.

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON CZECH REGISTRATION DRIVE After an initial set-back, the 1974 Czech registration drive at the University of Houston has been a splendid success; over thirty students have already come forth, and we have hopes for many more!

Plans were laid in the spring for a large drive at the time of the school's eary fall registration in April. Brother Stanley Valcik obtained the cooperation of the U of H art classes and about twenty posters were made for the promotion of the Czech language at the U of H. Mr. William Soucek also made a special poster for us.

Three weeks before registration, the U of H campus was full of signs encouraging Czech as a course. There were signs in every major building on campus. Some of the signs were worded as follows: RECZECH your choices for the jail semester!

CZECH-UP and CZECH-IN for the fall semester!

CZECH into the third largest language in Texas!

Be a member of a minority group . Speak Czech!

There was one large sign, two feet high and twelve feet long, which hung for one week in the U of H Center. It read: CHECK into CZECH this fall. Learn to Speak with half a million Texans. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The Czech Club.

This sign was made after long hours of toil and effort by three Students: Tom and Jan Rich, and Joe Smesny. There were many other posters and they must really be

-ieen to be appreciated.

Arrangements were made for a booth in front of the U of H Center on registration day with Czech literature, magazines and posters.

Czech music and Texas-Czech Polka Band music was to be played the entire day. Mr. Teofil Halama had written several announcements concerning the Czech program.

These were compiled and added to

by Mrs. Alfred Hilsher, John Pech and Emil Kuropata, to be distributed at registration.

But the light did not always burn so brightly. One week before the scheduled dates, the univer3ity cancelled early registration.

The reason was logical: between April and the fall semester too many students would change their minds on which courses they wished to take. Therefore, a mailin registration was scheduled for July 5-19, with a later registration to be held on the campus August 21-22.

This hurt our drive because we were left stranded to run the booths without the school registration being held the same day.

Nevertheless, the booths were opened on the days scheduled in April and the Ozech literature was available and Czech and polka music was played. Many students stopped at our booth and Professor Halama spoke with prospective students. Mrs. Viola Doenges, Stanley Valcik, - Carol McCabe, Professor Halama, and Verna Novosad helped me in the booth. Polkas were danced and the good Czech music seemed to perk up the spirits

of the students passing by.

It was just our luck that registration had been cancelled for that day and much of our effort went to little avail.

However, work continued.

Professor Halama, and his students compiled a list of names of people of Czech ancestry from the student directory.

Letters were then sent explaining the Czech courses to these students.

Many people helped in this effort, including the following: Mrs. Alfred Hilsher, Ann Svajda, John Pech, Mrs. Viola Doenges, Carol McCabe, Joe Remonte, Jo Ann Stransky and her younger sister.

This was a large undertaking and we are very grateful for the effort expended. Professor Halama and Mrs. Hilsher spent much time and effort in calling these students. Mr. Halama also handled all follow-up calls and contacted incoming students of Czech descent.

Plans were then made for the late August registration. Much help was obtained from the U of H reservations office and from Dean Whitehead, the associate dean of students.

As the August registration day approached, signs were again placed around the campus. The large sign was hung at the University Center, however, since most students had been gone for the summer, they were exposed to our posters for only one day. Booths were again arranged with Czech literature and handouts. A new handout was written by yours truly and printed at SPJST Lodge 88 by Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. Gill.

MWF Information on Czech courses was broadcast over radio stations KXYZ, KFRD (Rosenberg) and KLEE. Information was also sent to Mr. Ferris Block, Public Rela-

VtSTNiK tions Director at the U of H, and to Mr. Elmer Bertelsen of the Houston Chronicle. On August 22nd, Houston News Service, represented by Sallie Low, interviewed Professor Halama, for radio station KTRH, KPRC and KELM. On that day of registration, plans having been well laid, events went smoothly. The booths were manned by Mr. Halama, Mrs. B. K. Eubank and students Robert Eubank, Mrs. Viola Doenges, Ann Svajda, Carol McCabe, Joe Remonte, Kay Bily, and Mrs. Mary Ann Kay. During the day, polka music was played on the tape recorder.

But this time there was something special: two polka bands in person on the university campus!

What an event! Mrs. Wanda Kennedy's Reseda dancers were also to appear, but too many of them were still on vacation.

The two bands, who consented to play without remuneration and without much notice, were Wilbur Heinsohn's Space City Dutchmen, and the SPJST Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Brothers Rudy Dybala and Raymond Zapletal.

Special thanks must be given to Mr. Halama and to Carolyn Fillipp (member of the Space City Dutchmen) who expended much effort in contacting and obtaining the services of the bands.

The greatest thanks, however, must go to the bands themselves.

They played under difficult conditions in the open below-groundlevel Arbor of the University Center, with temperatures above 100 degrees and with absolutely no breeze available. Towels and refreshments were provided for all band members and Czech guests.

The members of the Space City Dutchmen band included: Carolyn Filipp who plays 1st clarinet and is active at Dulles Junior High School, for ten years; Wilbur Heinsohn, a postmaster and director of the band, plays tuba and bass guitar; Joyce Heinsohn, student at the U of H, and plays piano; Jimmy Heinsohn, who plays trumpet and bass guitar, and presently plays in the 5th U.S. Army Band at San Antonio; Lloyd Cizinar, designer for Fleur, Inc., and Henry Schaer, who teaches vocational shop at Fonville Junior High.

The Space City Dutchmen led off with a peppy rendition of a well-known polka. They followed with a variety of well-loved Czech polkas and waltzes, such as: "New Ulm Waltz" and "Echo in the Hills." The orchestra played continuously for one and one-half hours.

The Space City Dutchmen were followed by the SPJST Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra, directed by Rudy Dybala and Raymond Zapletal. They began with that wellknown Czech tune, "Muziky,. Muziky." Included in their program of thirteen Czech classics were: "Picnic in the Woods", "Beer Barrel Polka," (Skoda Lasky), "Meadowlark Waltz," "Koline, Koline," and "Pisnicka Ceska Waltz." They closed with two polkas -- "The Favorite Polka" and appropriately "The Last Polka." Many enjoyed dancing in spite of the summer heat.

Crowds gathered throughout the evening and there was much applause. Many members of the Houston Czech Community were present, including Mr. and Mrs. William Soucek. Mr. Soucek had graciously given much of his time and talent in preparing posters advertising the appearance of our two bands.

The spirit of the occasion led to many inquiries concerning this "new language" being offered.

Students Mary Ann Kay and Kay Bily charmed many of the onlookers with their smiles and explanations. Mr. Halama chatted with and explained the courses to the many interested people. All in all, the evening was a success.

Wednesday, September 4, 1974 a demonstration of the continuing vitality of the Czech-American Culture.

In a time when some minority groups are emphasizing their uniqueness to the detriment of the nation and achieving recognition and special emphasis for their diverse influences, a people who have contributed culture, joy, and a good-time spirit to the soul of the people should again assert themselves.

To the Czech pioneers and forebearers, we wish to thank them for preserving the traditions and customs of a great people. It is time for the spirit of these Czech pioneers to again arise in the cities and towns across Texas, and a cultural revival be brought out of the closets and onto the streets.

We are now living in an age when many young people do not know from whence they came and where they are going. In this climate of culture disintegration and family strife — NOW — is the hour for family to-getherness and community gatherings, the old-time dances, and general emphasis on our traditions and heritage so our young people will know where their roots are and feel a sense of identity with dignity, and be proud from whence they came.

We challenge other Czech clubs throughout the state to join us in spurring on a Czech cultural revival.

Congratulations to our Beseda group: Debby Becan, Anne Scott, Chris Mandak, Margie Haluzain, David Liska, Randy Petr, Albert Haluzan, Larry Sadecky, who won first place at the State YAD and also to craft winners Steve Reanik and Debby Becan.

State Royalty competition is to be held at our lodge, Lodge 84, on September 8th. Dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the royalty competition starts promptly at 2 p.m. Everyone is invited to come and witness the crowning of the State King and Queen and attend the coronation ball. Gary Lee and his orchestra will provide the music.

Ladies of our lodge are asked to bring pastry for the dinner on September 11th when the DallasEnnis Fraternal Council holds its meeting in Ennis, at the KJT auditorium on Highway 75 South, with the KJT-KJZT Societies hosting. Attend if you can.

Sunday, August 25th has come and gone. This annual affair of our homecoming is like magic; it draws the members into a solid group of happy family, and a family we are — brothers and sisters. Anyone present Sunday sensed the closeness and must have realized we need each other in many more ways than one. A lodge home such as ours requires the attention of many devoted members, not only when we can benefit, but also when we should extend a helping hand. A planned affair like Sunday's homecoming does not create itself, there is a lot of mannawer behind it and needed. I

do hope as these homecoming affairs of our lodge are held we will gain new and willing members who will show an interest, not only on that certain day, but throughout the entire year.

As early as 10 a.m. the parking lot around the ledge began to fill with cars and before long even the parking lot across the street was full and surrounding streets were lined bumper to bumper. The serving started on time at 11:30 a.m., and there was no waiting in line to be served; a steady stream of four serving lines went on for hours and the delicious beef barbecue with all the trimmings was enjoyed by all. The sisters and friends, as usual, donated an abundance of home-baked pastry, for which we thank each one for being so kind.

Do you realize what it takes to prepare 2,500 pounds of beef. Of course, we have a spacious barbecue house with huge pits, but besides that it takes willing members to stay from 5 p.m. through the night to have it all ready for serving time. Brothers Edwin Winkleman, Adolph Klander, Mario Salinas, Bill Malak, Abner Dixon, Ed Zintek, John Klander, Karl Klander and Willie Wehring said there were other numerous volunteers for whose help they were thankful. He especially mentioned two youngsters staying and really lending a helping hand — Himie Salinas, 12, and Gary Wehring, 14 years of age.

Early that Sunday, a real cloudburst came over Houston, but we were lucky it subsided and did not rain all day, although it did start to sprinkle late in the evening which did not interfere in any way.

There were people everywhere; they all seemed to enjoy themselves one way or another. The afternoon social lasted two hours and thanks to the many gueSts who helped in clearing the dance floor for the five o'clock free dance with music by Harry Czarnek, which lasted until nine o'clock. The attendance was estimated at 3,500 members and guests, but the true figure will not be known until everything is accounted for. It was a marvelous and successful, day; the committees worked hard and long, and appreciated the help from volunteers. It took many people not only Sunday, but preparations before hand and then the winding'

10 up afterward, when everyone is tired and worn to a frazzle, but everything went off very smoothly.

Dear members, if you were at your lodge for the first time, remember to come back; there are many activitives within our lodge and there might be something you would enjoy to participate in. If you don't try, you won't know, so look into the possibilities of joining one group or another; it will grow n you.

I was so glad to see Frank and Belva Mikes from Ganado, Texas.

They retired years ago to this quiet community, but when they lived in Houston they were regular visitors to every activity at the lodge.

Frank is the brother of Brother Ludwig Mikes who is our specialist in preparing the famous brazed beef, that everyone likes so well.

You know a person doesn't realize how time passes by until you see children grown up right before your eyes, you see them today and the next time you see them they are a foot taller. Just like Kenrick, 12, and Colette, 10, the children of Joe and Blanche Stbora from Stafford. It was so nice to see you again; be sure and came to the English play on September 29th. The children will enjoy the comedy and you will, also.

Saturday night dance of August 24th, was a semi-formal affair and the ballroom was filled to capacity with the music furnished by the Blumes. The dance was hosted by Sister Marion Mikes, a member of the entertainment committee and helping her were Bill and Adele Hughes and David Harris at the door, and box office was taken care of by David's spouse, Shirley; she is the daughter of Marion and Ludwig Mikes. again we had the jolly group of 34 guests from Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with Rev. Phillip as their host. They all came on the church bus and before coming to the dance they stopped to eat at the Western Kitchen. SPJST members of the group were Willie and Margie Hlavac from Lodge 68, Waco. They surrounded Tables 12, 13, and 14.

tee Herzog and Lois and William Wendel were the hosts. They expressed their pleasure to be at our lodge this time in a group. Some of the members said they visited our lodge quite often. Do come back again.

At Table 8, Brother Emil Slanina celebrated his birthday, which was on August 27th, and danced to the requested tune "The Waltz You Saved for Me." Jake loth, at Table 35, celebrated his birthday with friends and requested the song "San Antonio Rose." Happy birthday to both. Member Ruth and her husband Leo Richter, a social member, with friends Royce and Lea Wistner are regular guests and had a little celebration going on. The Wistners are old friends of Wilma and Willie Wallace. I am sure a lot of you remember Brother Frank Tesar and Frances, his wife, the 'iarents of Wilma and her sister, Helen Kroulik. I kinda hoped to see you Sunday. Miss you!

Sister Anna Svestkai had a little misfortune; thank goodness it was no worse. Thursday night, August 22nd, she fell asleep in the 'hair watching television and when she suddenly woke up, not realizing that her legs were asleep she stood up and they gave way and she broke a bone in her foot, which is quite painful. The doctor assured her that it will take some time for it to heal. Anna, don't rush, take your time and get well soon. Anna is staying with her daughter, Hilda Krpec.

Tom and Clara Jecmenek just came back from a trip to Monterrey, Mexico, accompanied by their daughter, Patsy Walker, and grandchildren Beverly, Rene, and Ray. They are repacking their suitcases to take off to Fort Wayne, Indiana to attend the wedding of Barbara Durtsehe, which will take place August 31st. Grandpa Tom will prepare his Texas specialty, barbecue, for the reception after the wedding. They are planning on u week's visit.

A lovely faunal wedding took place Friday, August 23rd to unite two young people in a double ring wedding. The vows were taken by the bride, Deborah Lynn Merck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Marek, and Michael Frank Knanick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Knapick, at the Houston Brethren Church. Rev. Henry B. Beseda and

Rev. Lawrence T. Zwick united the couple in marriage. The bride, in a lovely wedding gown and trailing train, was given by her father, Bennie Marek. The bridesmaids were all dressed in yellow and ribbons in their hair to match. The cute little flower girl, Elaine Case, and ring bearererimmie Livings, were adorable. The bride's and groom's mothers, the e two grandmothers and the groom's greatgrandmother were dressed in formal gowns. The reception was held at Ledge 88 Ballroom, the wedding party was led in the wedding march by Wanda and Noel Kennedy. Refreshments and a buffet dinner were served to the guests.

Brother Clarence Baca's orchestra furnished the music for dancing.

Sunday, August 4th, was a special day for our members Stanley and Virgie Cmelka; they were honored by their daughters with a reception and dinner celebrating their parents golden wedding anniversary at Lodge 88, in the red room. To make it more festive, Danny Drozd furnished the music.

They were married August 2nd, 1924. Stanley and Virgie have two daughters, Mary Lou Banuelos and Jennie married to Bob Swatlosky, they have a son and two daughters.

A host of friends and the family were on hand to extend best wishes to the couple. Stanley and Virgie are very lucky and are proud parents and grandparents. Let me also extend my best wishes.

A one-week vacation trip to Anchorage, Alaska, turned into an extensive three-week vacation for Edgar and Angela Andrews, daughter and son-in-law of our dear sister and at one time a regular writer to our weekly Vestnik, Anna Vrla. Edgar and Angela are both retired teachers from the Alvin, Texas High School. They are in Alaska visiting their two children, daughter, Martha (Mrs. Charles Carpenter), and employed by Radio Corporation of America; and son, Donald Andrew, a construction engineer and his wife, Mary Ann, who have a 4-year-old daughter, Gretchen. And then there is Cynthia (Orsak) their niece, who is married to Paul Oakley, an employee of the government at "Charge Ba-

tallion," a unit of our American Defense Line in Alaska. Cynthia is the daughter of Anna Vrla's son, Calvin and his wife, Florence Orsak. Anna has another son, Allan OrSak, employed by the Bell Telephone Co. in the Gallaria, here in Houston. Anna is very fortunate to have such a lovely family. It is no wonder the Andrews had to extend their vacation for a couple more weeks, with a son, daughter, and niece all married, and with a beautiful granddaughter, Gretchen, all in one place.

The time spent in Alaska must have been a wonderful experience.

Birthday Club card party will be held as usual on the first Wednesday, September 4th; a delicious lunch will be served and you may enjoy yourself with a game of your choice. AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON Last Wednesday, August 21st, Czech popular music was heard.on the campus of the 'University of Houston when the Space City Dutchmen dance band and the SPJST Lodge 88 Brass Band performed in the Recreational Center rotunda, starting at 6:30 p.m. and continuing until 9' p.m. They played the well-known Czech music â&#x20AC;&#x201D; polkas, waltzes and marches and played it very well indeed.

This presentation was intended to boost interest in the registration for the Czech language courses (as we were informed over the PA system) and was the idea of student Robert Eubank, president of the Czech Club at the University, who was in charge of the program, assisted by Mr. Teofil Halama, who teaches the Czech language.

Unfortunately, almost all of the student registration took plaee during the day and because of lack of publicity or some break in communications, the hall and the many galleries of the Recreation Center had few listeners, but those present enjoyed the musical performance immensely.

cause the music played by the Space City Dutchmen, directed by Wilbur Heinsohn and consisting of the following musicians, Joyce Heinsohn, James Heinsohn, Lloyd Cizmar, Carolyn Filipp, Saragusa Garcia, Henry Schaer and, Raymond Zapletal, was good and pleasantly listenable as many who have danced to the music of this fine dance band well know. Brother W. Heinsohn is forming a youth polka band; if interested, contact him.

It certainly was a pleasure and enjoyment for me to listen to the assembled Brass Band of Lodge 88, directed by Rudy Dybala, with Raymund Zapletal his assistant director, and the following performing musicians: Mrs. Raymond Zapletal, Mrs. Patricia Parma, Charles Tomez, Thomas Dybala, Mrs. Della Carlson, Miss Carolyn Filipp, Miss Lois Dybala, Henry Schaer, Eric Carlson, Reuben Hultquist, John Dybala, Wilbur Heinsohn, and, last but not least, Frank Koudellsa. whose baritone playing added, for me as a musician, the feeling of harmony completeness. I have nothing but praise for these fine musicians, who, avoiding the socalled concert members, which are the downfall of other organizations

of this type, played instead the solid and colorful Czech music as was performed and popularized by Frantisek Kmoch (r e member "Muziky, Muziky" operetta?) and his dance band during his early years and later as the director of the famed Sokol Brass Band of Kolin. Our Lodge 88 Brass Band played, and played well, with accuracy in tempo and on. pitch; indeed it was a joy for me to listen to them. The band rehearses every Wednesday at Lodge 88. so b your instrument and join them.

In the circle of friends and appreciative onlookers who were enjoying the evening's proceedings, I saw, among others, our Sister Birdie Hilsher, chairman of the CLCUH Committee and of the C.ech Art Society, who came directly from a meeting the' committee had with the University officials.

At any performance, audiences help and stimulate the performers, but audiences don't create good music, as I well know, for in the years of my concert activity, both as the conductor of the Czechfounded Concert Choral Society and others, and as organ-recitalist, I have also performed occasionally

All of the participant:, in State YAD massed onstage. There were approximately 100 youngsters participating in the events at State Youth Achievement Day on August 18th at Temple High School. to many empty seats in sparselyfilled concert halls, as have all performers. Therefore, if the empty levels of the three-story galleries and the rotunda of the Recreational Center echoed and re-echoed Wednesday to somewhat small, but appreciative audience, this did not affect the nice presentations of the performers, but was really a loss for the students and everyone else who was not there. Perhaps matny of our lodge members and others did not know of this event; we ourselves did not find out until only two days before, when I heard Brother Dybala talk to pretty Miss Filipp.

Let me say again, both musical organizations were good and performed well -- a credit to the Czech heritage of popular and folklore music. As a future coming even possibility, the CLCUH Committee and I were asked by the University to present some of the great treasury of Czech choral masterpieces by Sknetana, Dvorak, Janacek, Novalk, Fibch, etc., in concert performances by the Concert Choral Society in the Mendell Hall auditorium of the University. When programs are finalized, all cultural Czech arts events will be announced in the Vestnik. The Concert Choral Society rehearses every Tuesday from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Sokol Houston hall on Patton St. Membership is open in soprano, alto, tenor, and bass sections to all good voices. Mnalcal background is not necessary but punctual rehearsal attendance is compulsory.

General musical theoretical educational program is of part of the choral rehearsals as a recreational activity leading to accomplishment in concert presentation. Music studied is of the classical folklore( and popular repertoir, with many

American premier performances of masterpieces from the great treasury of the Czech Choral Art. Don't forget, the last day of student registration for the Czech courses is September 5th, all day.

But were you aware that over 400 individuals attended this competition to view all types of talent, ranging from singing, dancing, collections, clothes making, to cooking?

Thanks should go to the parents for encouraging their young people to compete and also to those who engineered, judged, worked backstage, and those who came just to watch and back the youth. Also, to the State Youth Director and all DYCs, and local lodge youth leaders. The Youth Department's purpose is to help the youth understand the main idea of competition.

A special thanks should go to the young people for displaying their talents and accepting the fact that some have to win and some have to lose. Every person wants to win or be the tops in whatever they compete in, but if you young people will think about it, you have to lose in order to win.

You probably say that that's a stupid statement, but even the greatest heroes of our times have had stumbling blocks before they reached their main objective. And with constant practice and efforts, goals can be accomplished with you also knowing that you have done your best and achieved your goal with honest means. I'm sure you have heard the following be.-1151.3E3

fore, but it helps explain a lot: Your being in competition has not only brought you together as friends but also helped you become aware that in later life, you can become accomplished knowing that accepting a defeat, as well as a victory, with the understanding of doing better the next time. A tip of the hat to you, the young people, and a hope of success with tomorrow.

Thanks also are in line to our SPJST Society for, through members of the Supreme Lodge, it allows funds for this and many other events which surely otherwise could not be held. The SL knows, as well as you and I, that the youth of the Society are the leaders and makers of tomorrow and that getting them interested now, will help the SPJST grow with higher goals of membership.

If more individuals would combine and compromise their ideas and efforts with each other there not only would be better unity in the SPJST, but, on a large scale, a better unity in the world itself.

The word "fraternalism" means, to me, an organization with a common goal and purpose achieved through working together as one.

And with working together, you can get your idea accomplished and I can get mine accomplished, but with all of us working with the thought of making the SPJST a much better organization.

It was wonderful to have this fine turnout after a summer vacation and everyone was in fine spirits.

We rehearsed the fine old songs and many new ones as well with everyone having a happy smile on their faces it was a very enjoyable evening for all who attended.

After rehearsal we had a short business meeting and it was decided that for the rest of the year we will meet regularly every second and fourth Tuesday at 8 p.m., so let's all turn out on Tuesday, September 10th and enjoy a wonderful relaxing evening of good fellowship. We were invited to sing at the dedication of the new Academy Lodge 177 on Sunday, December 15th which we have accepted.

Sister Cathy Milek announced that they would show the many pictures they have taken on their recent trip to Czechoslovakia at the Holland. SPJST Hall on September

29th, beginning at 1:30 p.m. She also announced that Brother Ralph's working hours have been changed, which will not permit him to accompany us on his accordion until later this year. Ralph, we are all going to miss your smiling face and those wonderful tones from your accordion and we hope your hours will be changed soon.

13 ATTENTION, PLEASE! The 75th anniversary of Lodge Praha, No. 29, will be observed on Sunday, October 6th with a gigantic celebration at the lodge, located east of Taylor, on that day.

The lodge has invited the residents of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor to display the articles of different crafts that they have been making during their spare time at the Rest Home. These articles will be for sale during the day in a booth at the hall.

The proceeds from the sale of these articles will be used to purchase items that are needed very much at the home, such as a movie projector, record player and hair dryer. These articles would provide much enjoyment to the residents of the home.

Anyone desiring to help with this project by donating other articles to this booth to help make it a success, can mail them to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No I, 500 E. Lake Drive, Box 850, Taylor, Texas 76574, or these articles can be brought to the hall on the day of the celebration. Any items will bel appreciated so this project can be successful.

There will be good things to eat all day. There will be another class held sometime in September, so make plans to attend; everyone needs some kind of training to stimulate your thinking and keep us growing in sales, quality, and service.

We came home early Sunday and were glad to get back, but we sure had a good time.

LODGE NO. 18, ELGIN Dear Members, The Elgin SPJST youth club held its monthly meeting on August 20th at 7 p.m. in the TP&L Civic Room.

In the meeting, we decided to have a bake sale downtown to raise some money. The dater was set for September 14th, at 8:30 a.m., in front of Upchurches Drug Store. The youth club members will supply the goodies along with contributions from the mother lodge.

Becky Haverland was present at our meeting and expressed her wish to become a social member. A motion was made, seconded, and approved that she be accepted as a social member. We are glad to have her in our club.

Mr. Lad Zatopek, the District II sales representative, was with us again and we were glad to have him.

The next meeting was set for September 17, at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, August 20th at 8 p.m. we had our annual swimming party. I would like to also take this time to thank the Snook Youth Club for taking their time to come out. We didn't have any of our inactive members to attend.

Don't forget our monthly meeting will be held September 4, 1974.

Our social was held at the Taylor city pool and later we ate supper at the Dairy Queen.

A new member, Brady Pasemann, was welcomed to the club.

We had our August meeting on Sunday, August 11th, with Robin Krenek leading the pledge of allegiance.

We discussed our entries in the State YAD. Troy Marek, Edwina Adamek and Ronnie Rieger, represented our youth club.

Our club decided to form a telephone committee and let one member call each month to earn points.

The August social was held on August 13th. We went on a tour at the Coke plant in Austin and later we ate lunch at McDonalds.

Thomas Whatley was welcomed as a new member and our visitors at these meetings were: Karen Page, GayIon Frase, Donna and Shana Pasemann.

Brother Zavodny passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 1974 at his home, due to an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services were held on Friday, August 16th, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone, with the Rev. Peter Noble officiating.

Burial was in the St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Brother Zavodny was born in Brenham and had lived in the Airville community since 1938. He was a retired merchant and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic

Church. He joined the SPJST on July 10, 1921.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Josephine Zavodny; a daughter, Mrs. Virgil Holtman of AirviIle; a sister, Mrs. Annie Bigon of Granger; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Brother Zemanek were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday July 30, from the Garmany & Co. Funeral Home Chapel in Rosenberg, with the Rev. W. Frank Cate, pastor of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial was in the Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Brother Zemanek was a production engineer for Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. As supervisor of sulphur production, he was responsible for recovery of sulphur from underground deposits from the company's mines.

He directed numerous exploration drilling programs in the U.S. and foreign countries and was instrumental in developing four S.S. patents relating to sulphur operations.

He started work with TGS as a laborer at Long Point in January, 1931, and retired as assistant general manager.

A Fort Bend County native, he was graduated from Rosenberg High School in 19217 and was an engineering major at the University of Houston. He was a member of the American. Petroleum Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Valasta June Zemanek of Houston; two sons, Robert A. Zemanek of Houston, and Arnold F. Zemanek of San lVfarcas; one daughter, Mrs. Wanelle M. Adair of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; four sisters, Mrs. Vlaksta Chernosky, Mrs. Alvina

Mr. Junek was born on March 19th, 1904, the son of the late Will Junek and Mary Sebesta Junek.

Mr. Junek was married to Miss Sidonia Kovar on January 4, 1925, in Caldwell. He was preceded in -eath by his wife and parents.

Career Corner LANGUAGE SKILL MARKET

By Joyce L. Kennedy Dear Joyce: My daughter is in her third year of French and is seriously considering taking an additional two years of French during the balance of her high school years. I would like to know the career possibilities using French as the main part of the job besides teaching French in school.

—BLD, West Lawn, Pa Answer: Careers using a foreign language as a primary skill are virtually limited to teaching, interpreting and translating. There's been a drop in the number of high school and college students taking foreign language courses (which means fewer jobs for language teachers), and competition for inIterpreting and translating jobs is also very keen. Moreover, just being a good language student doesn't automatically qualify one for a job in any of these three fields.

Requirements and opportunities are abundantly discussed in a new booklet, "Foreign Languages and Careers," published by the Modern Language Association this month.

22 It's the first detailed information on language careers published since the mid-1960s.

This excellent booklet stresses `language as an auxiliary career skill, pointing out that as the world grows smaller, the need for bilingual and multilingual men and women is increasing. Some of the areas where the ability to communicate in more than one language is helpful include: Business, industry and commerce.

As American firms expand their business efforts overseas, they are increasingly on the lookout for executives and managerial staff who know a second language, for both their home and foreign offices.

Companies most likely to need technical and engineering staffs with language proficiency are those with overseas plants, or that menu{facture machinery that is used a-overseas, American subsidiaries of European-based companies, and manufacturers that use European,made components in their American bperations. Banking and finance organizations employ foreign-language-speaking executives, auditors and accountants, correspondents and analysts. One of the largest markets is in the secretarial and clerical area — in many cases because executives themselves do not have language skills and must hire assistants who do.

Civil Service — People with language skills are employed by the federal government in such agencies as the Foreign Service, U.S. Information Agency and the Office of Economic Opportunity. Language skills often are needed for local government jobs too, in areas with lots of immigrants or minority groups.

Other fields where foreign language, skills help are: education (research, administration, schools abroad), law (legal aid), international law), library science (cata- loging, reference, archives, area studies specialists), media (journalism, film industry, publishing), science (research, international cooperation), travel and tourism (hotels and motels, transportation).

Language knowledge alone won't get youe the jab. However, a way with foreign words can be the extra asset that clinches the deal.

Successful retirement doesn't just happen; it results from careful planning, notes an economist in agribusiness at Texas A&M University.

"One's success and happiness during retirement depends to a great extent upon how well he prepares," says Dr. Wayne Hayenga with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. "Successful retirement requires considerable thought and effort."

He points out that most people today have jobs which have retirement regulations. In many jobs retirement is required at age 65.

However, farmers, ranchers and other self-employed businessmen have more flexibility in deciding on the time of their retirement. The social Security law provides the possibility for these people to retire anytime between the ages of 62 and 72.

"Many self=employed people work as long as they are able," Hayenga points out. "When they do retire, often it is as a result of poor health or adverse business conditions. This usually does not lead to a happy retirement period."

Although Social Security retirement benefits have continued to increase, these benefits are designed to cover only the bare living essentials, and no more. So other sources of income are often needed, contends the economist.

Many farmers continue to do some farm work after retirement to provide extra income. According to the last Census, more than 16 per cent of the farms in Texas were operated by people over 65.

Most of these farmers receive only a small amount of farm income, but others continue to operate larger farms and collect reduced or no Social Security benefits.

The economist suggests contacting an insurance agent or banker on ways to provide, for retirement income, including annuity plans
