FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, July 21st we attended the District II YAD at Hillje Lodge No. 40. The weather was typically July — hot and dry, however, inside the lodge building it was nice and comfortable with the air-conditioning system doing its work. The program was well planned and proceeded at a smooth pace with Sister Monica Merta doing the chores as Mistress of Ceremonies. DYC Elsie Brdecka is to be commended for her continuous efforts to strive even more successfully to attain greater accomplishments with the youth. She and the youth leaders plus parents certainly show interest in the accomplishments of the District VI youth. Sister Brdecka has bier report in this issue in the DYC section. We were glad to see Past District VI Director Paul Sablatura and Sister Sablatura; she had been in the hospital when we were in District VI the last time; we are glad to report that she looks real well. We also spent a few pleasant moments with Brother William J. Duckett and Sister Lottie Krutilek. We will write more about them later.

District VI Director Matt Vanek was attending to his chores, as usual, and present from Temple were S L President Nick A.

GEMS OF WISDOM There never has been, there isn't now and there never will be, any face or people on the earth fit to serve as masters over their fellow men. —Franklin D. Roosevelt Most men believe that it would benefit them if they could get a little more from those who have more. How much more would it

benefit them if they would learn a little more from those who know more. —Wm. J. II. Boetcker The oriental philosophers say: "What I gave, I have; what I spent, I had; what I kept, I lost."

Morris and family and SYD Dorothy Massey. All day long a little bird poured out its soul in song. It never knew that because of its melody a child in a sick bed smiled in its pain. And a man, beaten to earth, going by, heard the song and lifted his head, ready to battle anew. The little bird never knew that the lilt of its rhythm quieted a quarrel of two lovers, who whistled instead to the tune. And • a woman was good because her eyes caught sight of the little bird in the tree-

top as it chirruped its song of love. Did the little bird bemoan that no one came with medals and praise to make it a hero, a bird of renown? When eventime came, the little bird lifted its wings and flew to a bough in a place that it knew. For tomorrow would come, and again it would sing, no matter who heard, just for joy! The science professor did not deliberately -set out to be a longhair, he simply forgot that barbers existed, until accidentally reminded. This meant that haircuts might be anywhere from three weeks to three months apart. His students organized a betting pool. Each time his hair became long enough to need a trim, a jar and a piece of paper were placed on a table in the hall. A student would drop in a quarter, sign his name and guess the date for the next haircut. The professor was greatly puzzled by the mysterious jar and list which appeared, disappeared, then reappeared a few weeks later. Reacting to his scientific training he began to keep notes and after several months the light dawned. He walked up to the table, deposited a quarter, wrote his name and the date, went to the barbershop, and returned to collect the pot.
