Riches and rank have no necessary connection with genuine gentlemanly qualities. The poor man may be a true gentleman, in spirit and daily life. He may be honest, truthful, upright, polite, temperate, courageous, self-representing and self-helping — that is, be a true gentleman. The poor man with a rich spirit is in all ways superior to the rich man with a poor spirit.

To borrow St. Paul's words, the former is as "having nothing, yet possessing all things," while the latter, though possessing all things, has nothing. The first hopes everything and fears nothing; the latter hopes nothing and fears everything. Only the poor in spirit are really poor. He who has lost all, but retains his courage, cheerfulness, hope, virtue and self-respect is a true gentleman.

Johnnie L. Fojtasek, 47, passed away suddenly in Temple on Friday evening, June 21st. Funeral services were held from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple on Monday, June 24th, with burial in Bellwood Memorial Park near Temple). Brother Fojtasek was a member of Lodge 47, Seaton.

The quadrennial convention of the RVOS was held last week at the KC Hall in Temple. Brother Sid Pokladnik, District III Director of the SPJST, was elected convention chairman and Brother Ludwig Sablatura of Corpus Christi was elected vice chairman. The convention finished its work in just under 2 1 2 days. All incumbent officers of the Supreme Lodge were re-elected.

John Kotrla, 99, passed away in a Taylor hospital on Saturday, June 22nd. Funeral services were held 'Monday, June 24th. The Supreme Lodge paid Brother Kotrla a check for his matured certificate on February 4th, 1971, after he had attained age 90. He had been a member of Lodge 20, Granger.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The June meeting was called to order by President E. J. Hanka on June 10, 1971. Brother Lin Lesak presented the colors and led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States.

The minutes of the meeting for the month of May were read and approved by the membership.

It was reported that one member of our lodge had passed away since the previous meeting; namely, Bro. Elo Charles Syptak. The members stood in respect of our departed brother.

Correspondence was acknowledged from the family of Brother Elo Charles Syptak and a card of thanks from Sister Frances Crossman.

The list of new applicants and transfers was read. A motion was made and seconded to accept same.

Such motion passed.

Inititation of new members took place at the direction of President Hanka. Sisters Mary Tilich and Elsie Zalesky registered the new members. President Hanka initiated the new members and First Vice President Jeanette Walkoviak issued the charge. President Hanka spoke

briefly of the background of the SPJST. The new members initiated were: Alva Thomas, Otis Thomas, Theresa Spies, Jane Turlak, Floyd Turlak, Michael Turla,k, Matthew Turlak, Dorothy Muras, Ruth Ellison, Phil Ellison, Lucas Ellison, Linda Hendrix, Don Hendrix, Celes tine Darilek, Mrs. Louis Villarreal, Mario Salinas and Mary Salinas.

Pres. Hanka thanked the members for working so diligently at Splash Day. He also announced tthat 'Members Homecoming" will be held in the upcoming weeks and urged all members to do their share.

Financial Secretary Ellen Gill reported for the month of May, 1974.

There were 15 withdrawals, three deaths, six suspensions, one reinstatement and one transfer out of the lodge.

Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg announced past and upcoming youth activities. The youth sponsored v a r io us projects f o Splash Day which resulted in a net Of $307. Sister Wahlberg also made announcements regarding District V Youth Achievement Day. President Hanka commended the youth leaders for their participation at the Youth Achievement Day. Favorable financial reports were given on behalf of the various com mittees which were accepted as read.

Entertainment Committee Chair man Leander Pflughaupt announced the upcoming activities at the lodge. In addition, he thanked the members for working on Splash Day and expressed his appreciation for the pastries donated for that day.

For the Dramatic Club and Choral Group, Sister Naomi Kostom announced that the English play had been cast and would be presented in the fall. The Choral Group has been rehearsing regularly each Tuesday evening and will participate at Sokol on Sunday, July 7.

District Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska reported that present ly a contest is taking place and urged the sales representatives to do their best. Also, she expressed her thanks for their assistance on Splash Day. District Youth Counselor Marlene Caraway thanked the members for

In addition, Sister Caraway announced that Sister Louise Knapick was awarded "Youth Leader of the Year" of District V. Also, the Youth Club of Lodge No. 88 was awarded "Youth Club of the Year" for our district. The District V King and Queen are also from our lodge and they are Brother Kenneth Bros and Sister Jade Elzner.

Their duke and duchess are Brother Bobby Allbritton and Sister Kathy Brady. The Beseda Group from our lodge will also compete at the State level. The Junior and Senior group talent winners are from Lodge No. 88.

For unfinished business, Brother Louis HanuS spoke regarding the second Clean-Up Day held May 19.

He recognized four youth members who worked diligently that day: Brothers Mark Wahlberg Gary Ermis, John Brow and Gary Wehring.

The new business to be discussed was the expanison project which was decided at the special meeting Which followed the regular monthly meeting. Proceedings of the special meeting follow herein.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to the following members: Betty Miksch, Kristi Green, James Lyons, Michael Turlak, Rose Mrosko, Emily Bily, Jake Pavlas, Louise P. Chudej, Frances Otossman, Mary Hoffman, Margie Darilek, Oscar Helmcamp, Rebecca E. Thompson, Doris Fluellen, Robert Fluellen, Nor man Urbanovsky, Mary Russell, Sophie Hampel, Dorothy Pflughaupt and Becky Wright. The door prize winners were Brother Warren Have mann and Sister Darlene MeSpadden. The lodge provided the refreshments following the special meeting. The meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m.

A special meeting was called to order by President E.J. Hanka at 8:36 p.m. The purpose of this meeting was to decide on the expansion project as discussed at previous meetings.

Brother Alfred Hasher explained this expansion, as follows. The east side of the building would measure 220 feet x 20 feet. The west side of the building would measure

Several points of interest were brought to the attention of the membership. Following this discussion, a motion was made and seconded to vote on the construction of both sides which includes the youth building, on the first ballot and the votes would be cast by secret ballot. Such motion passed.

While the votes were being cast, Brother Zalmanek spoke regarding the recreational courts being constructed at the present time. There will be a tennis court and a volleyball court. The tennis court can be converted to a basketball court.

After the votes were cast, the Balloting Committee announced that a total of 189 votes were cast.

President Hanka presented a motion to the membership which reads as follows: 'That this special meeting of Lodge No. 88 called on this 10th day of June, 1974, by a vote of 136 to 53, it is agreed that we begin building the expansion to this lodge immediately and also that the Board of Trustees proceed to make application for a loan With the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST up to $150,000.00, if necessary, at the rate of five per cent (5%) and that the payments shall be paid annually each year. Also, that the officers, same being president, secretary, chairman of the Board of Trustees and the Oecretary of the Board of Trustees shall sign all necessary papers." Such motion was seconded and passed.

The special meeting adjourned at 9:45 p.m.

VPSTNIK LODGE NO. 17, NEW TABOR Dear Vestnik Readers, On June 9, the New Tabor lodge held its monthly meeting. The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Bill Trcalek. The pledge of allegiance was repeated by all members present. The secretary read the minutes of the previous meeting with no additions or corrections.

A resolution of sympathy was read for Frank Skrabanek, who passed away in May. Two new members were admitted into the lodge. They are Kenneth Charanza and Tammy Roberts.

The lodge would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Bill Zawatzky for donating the furniture to the lodge.

With no other business pending, the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be held on the first Sunday in July, the 7th. This will be the first month that the lodge will start having the monthly meeting on the first Sunday.

Brother Edwin Adamek, president, presided at the meeting. Linn Walker presented and led the pledge to the flag.

A moment Of silence was held for Sheriff Henry Matysek of Georgetown. He was not a member of our lodge, but his wife and daughter are. Also for Albert Svadlenak. The families of these men have our deep sympathy. It was a shock to hear about Sheriff Matysek.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Sister Catherine Walker, in the absence of Brother Paul Pasernann, Brother Edwin Kovar gatve the property report and all reports were approved - as read.

The hall is beginning to look nice. It is being paneled and the floor is being reinforced; you sure can see the difference.

Our celebration plans are coming along fine; all the committees are working hard.

President Ernest J. Hanka has a way of disappearing without a word to anyone and the next thing a person finds out, he is tucked away for a week or so in the cozy Twelve Oaks Hospital. I was glad to hear that it was nothing serious and when I phoned him he was somewhere in the hospital and not

I was glad he was so cheerful in answering the phone and he assured me he would be going home the next clay (that was Saturday).

Of course, he forgot the doctor always has the last word for that decision and, naturally, it was two days later (Monday)! Brother Hanka, I am sure you need that rest once in a while, because you sure don't do it at home. Being the president of Lodge No. 88 and halving a legal practice with other sidelines is quite a, job, so take care of yourself; slow down and listen to your doctor and your dear wife, Pearl, once in a while. Glad you are at home.

Las Vegas is attracting visitors from Houston like a magnet.

Brother Emil Bily and Emily, his wife, in the company of Emily's sister, Mary, and her husband, Floyd Bench, took a flight to Las Vegas for three days. It was their first venture to the city of chance and luck, so all four picked up some experience for next time.

They enjoyed the three days staying at the Holiday Inn and took in several shows; they liked Dee_ bie Reynolds at the Desert Inn and, of course, they tried their luck, but Emily did not dwell on that very much; well, better luck next time! The flight was short and smooth.

The three couples — Hegwoods, Kennedys and Malays — after seven days spent in Las Vegas, are

happy-go-lucky and full of pep and ready to go anytime again.

They made the trip in pill Malak's Club Wagon which is very comfortable. They left Thursday night and spent the next night in Tucson and arrived for the kill Saturday morning. They checked in at the Four Queens Hotel. What a coincidence, three queens and one king bunking at the Four Queens Hotel right in the center of all the action. Helen Hegwood and Marcell Malak were mostly wrestling the one-arm bandits and with luck, too! Wanda Kennedy tried everything and loved every minute of it; no question about it, they had fun. Bill Malak, King Hegwood and Noel Kennedy had their fun, too, during the day and at night they went to shows and dinner shows and celebrated the 19th wedding anniversary of Helen and King Hegwood. Coming back they drove straight through by alternating drivers; they were a tired but happy group.

Lillian and Harry Finn are back from their twelve-day cruise to the Caribbean and South America.

They visited Cartagena, S.A.; Coyumel, Mexico; Montego Bay, Jamaica and Panama. They had a wonderful time. Action on the ship is constant and the food is delicious and plentiful. They said there was not a dull moment all during the twelve days. They had the pleasure of having the company of three other couples from Houston. The ship was a Norwegian Caribbean liner, the Southward.

This was Lillian's and Harry's first cruise and they loved it. They are back home with wonderful memories to dwell on. We are glad you had a nice time and it is nice to have you back home again.

Brother Richard Ba lake, with his friend, departed from Houston on a cross-country trip of five weeks which will take them all the way across our border to Canada.

Both are born fishermen and will indulge in that sport anywhere on the way. Richard, we will be glad when you will be back again.

The Birthday Club monthly meeting will be Wednesday, July 10th, also a lunch as usual will be served and games — whatever you wish to play. Guests are welcome, ladies, bring your retired husband or friend with you and spend a pleasant day, as long as you

Sister Kratina lives in Kansas, but has a soft spot in her heart for Lodge No. 88, even when she lives thousands of miles away. SOFTBALL TEAM LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Brothers and Sisters, Thursday night, June 20, we played First Citizens Bank and We won by a score/ of 5 to 4, in a well played, close, ball game.Gil Vetters hurled the first five and two-thirds innings and allowed '5 hits, 2 strikeouts and no walks. Lionel Schulz hurled one and one-third innings, allowing no hits, no walks and struck out 3 batters and was credited with the win.

Leading hitters were Mark Winkler with a single and a walk, Wiley Beesley with a single, Jeff Burton with a single, Harry Wilkerson with a single, Albin. Vrana with a single, Jim Scoggins with a sacrifice, Lawrence Horize with a walk and Gil Vetters with a walk.

We missed one of our number one fans, team sponsor and great guy, Willie Ondrusek, who is currently recuneeating in the St. Paul Hospital after having suffered a heart attack. Friday night, June 21, we played our first game in the Garland Tournament and we played Pauncho's team (really the Chrysler team from our Thursday night league) and were victorious by a score of 4 to 3 in a real good ballgame. Lionel Schulz hurled a real good game, allowing 5 hits, 4 Walks, and had 3 strikeouts. Leading hitters were: Greg Driscoll, with a double and a single; Dickie Wagner, a draftee from the First Citizens team, two singles; Wiley Beesley, a single and a sacrifice hit; Mark Hammond, now a new member on our team had a three run home run; Jeff Burton had a single; Albin Vrana had a single; and Harry Wilkerson had a walk.

Our next game was Saturday, June 22, at 11 a.m. and we played East Grand Baptist No. 2 and we lost by a score of 4 to 2. Gil Vetters hurled for five and two-thirds innings, allowing 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2 batters; Jim. Scoggins allowed no hits in one-third inning. Leading hitters were Harry Wilkerson, with a double; Lionel Schulz, with a single; Jim Scoggins, a walk; Jeff Burton, a walk; Mike Vance, a draftee from First Citizens, a sacrifice; and Greg Driscoll, a walk. Lack of hits cost us this game; we really should have won it.

Immediately following the game we had to play again, at 12:30 p.m.

It was getting pretty hot about that time, and we played the E Systems from Garland and we won a hard-played game, 6 to 5, mainly on a 3-run home run by Lawrence Bonze,.

The proud parents are Tony and Kathy AlhoLm of Springfield, Ill. Matthew missed his parents' second wedding anniversary by a day. Congratulations to you all.

The hospital report this month included Mrs. Zich, who broke her arm and is now recovering at home. Also recuperating at home after surgery is Esta Belle Hubenak. We hope they will be back with us soon.

The quarterly report for this quarter looks a little better than the last report. The total disbursed this quarter is $485.75, which is a slight increase over the $457.25 the last report. The biggest progress is rejected this quarter in that only 9 youth clubs were not eligible for reimbursement, compared to 14 in the last report. In the last report, 6 youth clubs did not report; this time there are 5. It is one thing to hold meetings and not be eligible for quarterly reimbursement; it is quite another thing to hold meetings, be eligible, but fail to report. Again, this is unfortunate for the club, but we hope for improvement in this respect, in the next report. The entire membership should study the accompanying Fourth Quarterly Report which accompanies this letter.

Let's all have a good time this year, and may your camps and YADs, including state, be very successful for all of you.

I was very proud of our youth on this occasion and I am sure we will win some state contests. I am sorry that I didn't get a chance to look at the craft.

On May 26, the youth club had a bake sale in front of the Leroy Bank. They did real well. Thanks to all who donated cakes; also, all of you who helped.

On June 9th, the Cottonwood School Reunion was held. The youth club sold hot dogs and barbecue on buns, pies, cakes kolache,

and drinks. Thank you so much for the donations and also all of you who helped work. You are a nice group of youth club members and also the parents are always willing to help. Thank you very much.

Fraternally, Willie Mae Schuetz, Youth Leader (6-20-74) -SP.JS r-LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Members: Well, our big day -- the District III YAD — is over and was it a big one! Sister Wilma Nesuda stated this was the largest YAD we have ever had, and I believe her.

The crafts were something to see.

I must congratulate the older group of youth, 13 through 17 years. This group made the day, because we had something to judge this year. I must say the judges had a jdb, and I wish you could have heard the good remarks they made. Keep up the good work, SPJST is proud of you. The younger groups had more entries than before. Let's not think that we can take anything away from them, because they were good.

Congratulations to all the winners. To those of you making first place, best of luck at the State YAD. A big thank you to everyone who made this day la, big success.

Our Lodge No. 66 had more entries than before. As yout youth leader, I want to say thank you, for your , gdod work.

DISTRICT YOUTH LETTERS

DISTRICT V YAD On June 9th, we had our District YAD. Our host lodge was Lodge 1 72 in Pasadena. I would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Berry for the fine job they did for that day. A spaghetti dinner was served, which was very delicious.

Then, beginning at 1 p.m., we had the craft judging. This was very difficult for the judges. The crafts and the food were both very good. Since the judging was still going on we then had our talent judging. All of the talent was very good; the individual as well as the group talent. After talent judging, President Brother Hanka. of Lodge 88, presented the Point System winners with their certificates.

Then the big moment of the presentation of the craft and talent trophies and ribbons. All of the lodges had so many ribbons and trophies that it was hard to tell exactly how many each was presented with.

Overall, the children and their parents were very proud of the losers as well as their winners. I know my parents were very proud of my sister and me for bringing home so many trophies and ribbons.

Then came the presentation of our District V Royalty. Our District King from Lodge 88 is Kenneth Bros and also from Lodge 88, Queen Jode Elzner.

After all of the awards, there was a dance from 5 to 9 with the Music Kings; everyone enj oyed this also.

In conclusion, I would like to thank everyone for coming out and seeing our youth and to the contestants for a fine job.

Dear Members and Readers, June 9, Was District V YAD. The host lodge was Lodge 172, in Pasadena. We had a spaghetti dinner that was just great. Wednesday, July 3, 1974 After this portion was over, President Ernest Hanka, Lodge 88, presented the point winners with their certificates. Then, the awards were presented to the winners. I really could not keep up with all of the winners. I just know that there were quite a few being awarded. To end the day was the Royalty with King Kenneth Bran and Queen Jode Elzner. The dance afterward was very good.

LODGE NO. 39, BRYAN Dear Members and Readers, We had our big YAD on June 16th. When we got there we registered all of our craft and our group talent. Then we had dinner nd got ready for our group talent.

Dvoryore got seated and quiet for the individual and group talent performances. After they were completed we had a 15-minute break. Then we had our point contest.

Then we had the king and queen contest in which the three girls and the three boys gave their speeches.

Then the awards were presented to the winners in the craft and talent contests. Finally they announced the winners of the king and queen contest.

At 6:30 p.m. the dance began.

Dear Readers, Lodge No. 13, Dime Box is having their annual barbecue on July 28th.

There will be barbecue of all kinds, such as pork, beef, chicken and sausage. There will be entertainment such as games, concession stands, etc. Throughout the daytime there will be music presented by the Blue Vest Polka Boys. They will play at night, also, and tickets for the dance will be $1.50 each.

Dear Members, I have just returned from District VI Camp. This year's camp took a lot of hard work and planning. This was evident because I think all the campers can say "it

I'd like to give a special thanks to Dorothy Massey, our SYD, who was with us throughout our camp, and brought at special cheer to everyone. Also, a great big thanks to Mrs. Elsie Brdecka, our DYC, for all the hours she spent planning each activity; and each day. I know she worked hard, and everyone appreciated it. And, yes, the cooks deserve a big thanks, too. Mainly, because they were the ones who spoiled us with the delicious food; practically every hour, on the hour.

The leaders too, deserve to be thanked; because quite a few of them lost a "few" hours of sleep over us. A, special thanks to all these people, becatuse without them camp just wouldn't be camp.

I hope to see everyone at our next meeting. If not, I'll see you at YAD. Till then . . . take care.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 54, West, wish to extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, ANTHONY R. NEMECEK,

age 88, who passed away Thursday morning, June 13, 1974, at West Community Hospital.

He was laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery, West, following services at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Assumption, in West, Saturday morning with Requiem Mass at 9 a.m. Rev. George Doskocil was celebrant May his soul rest in peace.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone, in behalf-of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, RAYMOND V. DOSKOCIL,

of Westphalia, who passed away June 19, 1974, in a Temple hospital. Brother Doskocil was 62 years old at the time of his death.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 21, 1974, at the Catholic Church of the Visitation in Westphalia; the Rev. Gideon Strain officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Westphalia.

18 Rosary was recited Thursday, June 20, 19'74, at Hoelscher Funeral Home in Rosebud.

Brother Doskocil was born in Cyclone and lived there until he moved to Westphalia in 1945. He was a cotton ginner and a conservation contractor. He was married to Miss Annie Bartek, October 161, 1933, at Marak. He was a member of the Church of the Visitation and the KJT Lodge. He joined the SPJST on January 11, 1939.

Surviving are his wife; four sons, Lee Roy Doskocil of Rosebud, Calvin and Raymond, Doskocil, Jr., of Westphalia!, and Larry Doskocil of Barclay; four daughters, Mrs. Steven Jones, Miss Janet Doskolcil, Miss Delores Doskocil, and Miss Josephine Doskocil, all of Westphalia; four brothers, Bertin Doskocil of League City, Alfons and Elo Doskocil of Burlington and Joe Lee Doskocil of Cyclone; two sisters, Sister Marry Raymond and Miss Lorene Doskocll, both of Houston; and ten grandchildren. A son and a daughter died previously.

Pallbearers were nephews.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

Resolution Committee: Margaret Allbritton Mary Tilich Dorothy Hensley —SPJSTRESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY Brother John Kotrla of Taylor passed away in the SPJST Rest Home on Saturday, June 22nd, at the age of 99. He was born January 24th, 1875, in Industry.

He was a retired farmer and had lived in Taylor for the• past 20 years, living prior to that time in Granger. He was a long-time member of Lodge Komensky, SPJST, Granger, and his certificate was fully remitted to him by the Supreme Lodge when he attained the age of 97.

Surviving are: four daughters, Mrs. Millie Mikulencak of Austin, Mrs. Vlasta Massar of Bartlett, Mrs. Ruth Labaj of Granger, and Mrs. Ann Roanovsky of Austin; three sons, August Kotrla of Granger, Henry Kotrla of Taylor, and Adolph. Kotrla of Dallas; a sister, Mrs. Frances Sralla of Alice, eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Wednesday, July 3, 1974 Funeral services were held at 10 a,m. Monday, June 24th, in the 1Condra Memorial Chapel, Taylor.

The Rev. Dan lVfarek and the Rev. Josef Barton officiated, with burial in the Brethren Cemetery in Granger.

STUCKLEY, who passed away in a rest home in Hubbard, Texas, 'June 3. He was born in Weimar, September 27, 18196 and came to the Elk community about 1910. He married Mary Krupa at Skidmore, on October 24, 1916.

She preceded him in death February 18, 1965. He farmed in the Elk community for many years until he moved to Hubbard, in 1932. He became a member of Lodge 35, on November 1, 1914, was a very active member in all lodge affairs and transferred to Lodge No. 167, Penelope, in 1933 and was an organizer or sales representative for that lodge for many years. He transferred back to Lodge No. 35 in January, 1972. He was familiar to all of us who knew him in our younger days as a happy greeter of all, always ready for a joke or fun, so we will miss him and always remember his outgoing attitude.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Firasek of Penelope and Thelma Trojan of Irving; six sons, Jessie and Woodrow Stuckley of Hubbard, Elton Stuckley of Penelope; Edwin Stuckley of Axtell; Billy Stuckley of Mesquite and Jimmy Stuckley of West; twentyone grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; one sister, Mary Pasek of Weimar and two brothers, Arnold Stuckley of San Antonio, and Rudolph Stuckley of Weimar.

CZECHS SHARE THEIR COOKING, CULTURE WITH REST OF STATE

By Robert E. Ford Associated Press Writer An absolute stranger who turned out to be A. W. Kartous of Dallas got up from his chair in a doctor's office the other day and handed us a piece of pastry.

It was made of apple surrounded by a crisp bit of pie crust.

VESTNiK He proudly announced it was Czech sometning-or-other. Don't bellow' we ever could have repeated the word, certainly not correctly.

Which brings up some interesting facts about that nationality.

Most are published in "Inc Czech Texans", a booklet issued by the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio.

The Czechs are great ones for forming organizations. Let two of them meet casually on the street and you have an instant club with some unpronouncable title.

One reason for all this fraternity probably is because only in their own organizations can they hear names spoken properly.

Try to pronounce this one: Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Sta to Texas. It is a big organization understandably red u c e d to this SPJST in most references.

This does not mean that the Czechs are clanish. Quite the opposite.

From their beginning in this state in 1852, their leaders have urged them to assimilate with the remainder of Texans.

They were urged to learn English and speak enly it in public. And although there was some grouping all over the state.

Had some personal knowledge of a group of Czech who settled near Seymour in North Texas.

Their story is typical of Czech settlements throughout the state.

They were farmers and did not mix much in town. For one thing, they were outside the usual socializing centering in the churches.

They were Roman Catholic while the town at that tune was solidly Protestant.

But now the second and third generation Czechs are very much a past of the town's life in business and professions, a trend throughout Texas as farming patterns changed.

"The Czech Texans" points out that the unity of the Czechs is cultural rather than nationalistic.

There is a good 'reason, probably, for their avoidance of the nationlis tic ties.

Somewhere back in ancient history, the Czechs moved in and took over large portions of what now is Czechoslovakia in the center of

It was a terrible selection of geography. Any neighbor who had a few words or a few guns tried to take over.

So the Czechs and Slovenes were overrun, split up, prosecuted until they got fed up and some of them headed for America. A goud many had taken part in revolts and their homeland was less than healthy for them.

Did you know that Gen. Sam Houston at the great battle of San Jacinto had a band?

And guess who was one of its more noted players? It, was Frederick Lemsky, a Czech.

He played the fife in the fourpiece organization which sounded off with "Won't You Come to the Bower" as the Texans charged Santa Anna's forces.

Lemsky later taught music at Houston and then became a contractor.

Not until 1852 did the first sizeable group of Czechs reach Texas.

This was composed of 16 families landing at Galveston.

There were 16,000 Czechs in Texas by 1900.

There is no way to count them now, JO well assimilated are they.

But 30,000 persons, mostly Czechs, show up in Ennis the first weekend in May each year for the National Polka Festival.

When Czechs became predominant in some town they often changed the name. For instance there was a place in Fayette County called Hottentot, named alter a gang.

This was changed to Muleerry. The Czechs changed that to Praha.

The same thing happeiied to Hostyn, which had been in succession Bluff and Nlorava.n.

The Czechs can be pretty stubborn. SPJST originally was a national insurance fraternity with headquarters in the Midwest.

Texas Czechs got quite upset when they found they were paying more for insurance than their brethren elsewhere.

The Midwest Czechs explained that this was because of the deadly clangers of Indians, malaria and yet low fever. Nothing would change the Midwesterners. So the Texans broke away and formed their own insurance fraternity.

Wednesday, July 3, 1974 tions. For instance, 15 separate groups take part in Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.

One of the big things is Sokol, a Czech word for "falcon".

Sokol is an organization devoted to dancing, singing, Czech culture in general, and especially physical fitness. There is a big, two-story hall in Dallas devoted particularly to gymnastics and it is a busy place.

Sokol is responsible for some of spectacles the mass gymnastic often seen in stadiums.

There must be something to all this muscle and agility. A Sokol pamphlet claims that less than one per cent of Sokol members have been rejected by the military.

Legislative Reports The Constitutional Convention progress this week and passed a major milestone by approving, on a tentative basis, the only two articles which remained: the General Provisions Article and the Judiciary Article.

The General Provisions Article, considered by most people to be the "catch-all" article for items which do not fit neatly into other articles, followed, predictions and took several long, arduous days to finish. But in the end, it was approved by ate overwhelming majority.

The Convention took one important step before approving the General Provisions Article and this was to go back and reconsider a very controversial section dealing with environmental protection.

At the request of the section's author, Delegate Ray Hutchison, the Convention rescinded language which had caused arguments over how it would be interpreted and what it really meant. Although I supported the original section which permitted private citizen lawsuits against state agencies charged with enforcing pollution laws, I also supported the new substitute which simply said that the Legislature will hold respon-

VASTNIIR sibility for protecting the quality e environment.

I was happy to support also the Judiciary Article, an article which had proved to be a pretty sizeable -Aumbling block.

The Convention adopted a fair and just compromise Article, thanks to the hard work of its principal author, Delegate Lynn Nabors of Brownwood, which will go a long way in streamlining our courts system.

Delegates resolved the one basic create "circuit courts" instead of hangup left which concerned the status of county judges by allowing the Legislature in the future to mandating that they be created in e--4ery county.

I feel very strongly that we have no business ordering these courts created in every county and, accordingly, I think the Convention was wise in allowing this permissive stance.

This Judicia,ry Article is one which everyone can take pride in.

It will mean more efficient and speedier trials, and that accused persons will be found guilty or innocent much faster. We should see the logjam of court suits on the dockets alleviated, too.

We have now completed all of the new Constitution on its second, or tentative, reading. The Convention's Style and Drafting Committee is now refining and polishing the language and we are now in the position of looking at some of the new Constitution in its final form during the third reading process. Three articles, Article I (Preamble and the Bill of Rights), Article IV (Voter Qualifications and Elections) and Article XI (Mode of Amending the Constitution) have now passed the final reading.

You probably have heard news reports by now about the Texas Water Quality Board agreeing to hold a public hearing in the Central Texas area on the topic of industrial waste disposal — and primarily on the proposed waste disposal facility between. Marlin and Groesbeck.

I think the people in this area are just as important as the citizens in the other parts of the state where hearings will be held on the subject. It's pleasing to see the TWQB•granted my request for the hearing, too.

This hearing will be a primary and very important place and time to focus objections to the proposed Midway Services, Inc. operation.

Cattle prices remain in a deplorably low state which cry out for immediate attention but prices to the consumer have not declined accordingly.

I feel very strongly that one of the first and most needed actions this nation must take to begin turning this situation around is to either reduce sizably—or eliminate altogether -- the importation of foreign beef.

The American farmer is hardly doing any better than he was at the end of World War II even though productivity has risen - to meet increased food and fiber demands. It stands to reason that some of the profits would find their way to the fanner. Instead, it's a touch-and-go battle to earn a living anytime beef on the hoof is bringing only 21c to 25c a pound.

It's clear that rising prices in every sector of the economy are crucifying the farmer's ability to even stay in business. And, when that situation is followed to its logical conclusion, the situation will be worse than deplorable, it will likely be fatal!

sris TSTI SPELLS SUCCESS FOR EX - TRUCK DRIVER

(The following article is one of a series about graduates of the James Connally Campus of Texas State Technical Institute. State Tech, with campuses in Waco, Harlingen, Amarillo and Sweetwater, is a unique, state-supported technical and skill development school.

Waco — If Billy Cansler hadn't lost his patience one day between Roswell, NM., and Hondo. in the Valley, and mashed the accelerator of his diesel truck halfway through the floor, he might not be tooling around the new D-FW Airport in his service van these days.

But he did. And now, looking back, he's not sorry.

Billy Cansler bopped around high schools in Arkansas, Mertens, Texas, and Houston before finally dropping out to take a job with a road construction company.

He did all kinds of jobs, but mostly he drove trucks and heavy equipment. After a few years, he

saved up enough money to buy his own rig.

It was his first big chance to make some good money, but Billy blew it. In fact, he blew it up.

It was a blistering summer day in 1960. Billy can't remember how long he had been driving, but he was somewhere between Roswell and Hondo when his rig started running hot. Water pump trouble.

He stopped and , went for water. The truck started running hot again. He stopped and went for water again. The truck started running hot again.

Billy said to heck with it, and floorboa-rded her. And the engine blew.

So Billy went back to driving trucks for other people again.

Then, in 1967, he had to have an abscess removed from his lung, and the doctors said if he went back to driving trucks, the vibration might cause the blood vessels in his lung to nipture.

So, at the age of 31, Billy Cansler, with a wife and four children to support, started looking around for a new way to make a living.

Right about that time he heard about a new instructional course in vending machines that was starting up at the James Connally Campus of Texas State Technical Institute in Waco.

"I got to thinking about it," Billy said. "It seems that everywhere you look there's a vending machine."

So Billy enrolled in the first vending machine course at State Tech. He studied some math and electronics, and learned the intimate insides of all kinds of machines — coffee, cold drink, cigarette, sandwich, milk and ice cream.

He also got involved in student activities. He was president of his class and a member of the school's first Student Congress.

After a year, Billy graduated, the top student in a class of 22. He worked for several vending machine companies around the state, then last November, he joined the staff of Dobbs House, Inc., which was setting up a vending opera. tion at D-FW. Now, Billy is maintenance supervisor for the 2 machines that Dobbs operates throughout the airport terminal areas.

The job keeps him hopping, but

he said he likes it. For one thing, he gets paid for overtime, and he remembers the fat check he got the first week the airport opened, when wires kept getting crossed in a lot of things, including cold drink machines.

Billy said he's gradually learning his way around the biggest airport in the world, but he concedes he doesn't know all the back alleys yet.

"I've been here since Novemcer," he said, "and I still get lost."

NOT COMPLYING WITH PFD LAWS

BOATERS

Unwittingly or not, many recreational boaters are violating the law by failing to carry the prescribed personal flotation devices (PFDs), according to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department law enforcement officials.

"Although the new PFD require, ments went into effect October 1, 1973, it appears that many boaters failed to get the word," said officials.

"Game wardens will vigorously enforce all water safety laws in an effort to reduce the number of drownings in Texas. Even before the boating season got into full swing, some 165 citations were issued during April for failure to have the proper number of PFDs on board."

Length of the boat determines what types of personal flotation devices are required, with the exception that children 12 years of age and under must wear a life preserver while aboard any boat less than 26 feet long while the vessel is underway.

PFDs fall into three categories: Types I, II, III, and IV. Types I, II and III are wearable and Type IV is a throwable device such as the familiar buoyant cushion.

On boats less than 16 feet long, any type of U.S. Coast Guardapproved PFD may be used, either wearable or throwable, as long as there is one PFD for each occupant.

On boats 16 feet and longer, there must be a Type I, II, or III PFD on board for each occupant. In addition to the wearable PFDs, one Type IV must be on board to cope with emergencies such as falls overboard.

The throwable device does not have to have a line attached.
