VOLUME 62 — NO. 18

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, May 12th is Mother's

Day. How well I remember the teaching of my mother: "Always be truthful and live by the truth," she would say. In our modernday times I still feel that her words were filled with wisdom and I believe that the events of life will prove them correct. * * Every year the second Sunday in May is designated for mothers who deserve the very best in life from their immediate families in the United States as well as in faraway places; a day when mothers are remembered for their love, teaching and who are known as being the best friends in the world to ALL of their children. This special observation of Mother's Day was instigated by a little lady named Miss Anna M. Jarvis, who sponsored a church service in 1907 to honor her late mother, including mothers of the community. Miss Jarvis' request was for those who attended the service to wear a white carnation. Immediately, the custom of this nature spread throughout the United States with Mother's Day being officially proclaimed a national holiday in 1914. Later, celebrants ceased wearing flowers themselves and began giving them to mothers in the form

of corsages or bouquets. It has been a known fact that setting a special day aside to honor mothers existed in England centuries ago. According to the National Committee for the Observance of Mother's Day, the distinct occasion is also celebrated in such countries as Africa, Canada, China, Japan, Mexico and South America. Cn Mother's Day, usually, this vital day is1 set aside particularly to honor and pay tribute to our mothers. Every individual harbors countless thoughts and memories of mother. Those of you who still are fortunate to live in mother's warmth and love and who enjoy

her counsel and are strengthened by her encouragement plus confidence, are indeed fortunate. For those not so blessed there remain memories, possibly a sense of responsibility that we tried our very best not tohave failed her. Only a mother is the keystone of a decent and happy home and the center of the family in a civilized society. Be sure and cherish your mother always; not only on Mother's Day! . Food for thought: If there is righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in character; there will be harmony iii the home. If there is harmony in a home there will b- order in the nation. Where there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.
