FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, March 3, we had planned to attend the District VI spring meeting and, in fact, had looked forward to it. However, a change in plans was necessary, one of them being the uncertainty of being able to buy galsoline on Sunday and we definitely could not make the round trip on a tankful of gasoline. We, instead, called District VI Director Matt Vanek (LD) and requested that we be excused. He, fraternally, did so.

We thank him and hope that the meeting was fruitful, and we understand that it was, with the promise of further progress in District VI. We missed seeing all of our ever-faithful fraternalists.

Maybe by fall the fuel situation will be improved.

Sunday, March 10, we enjoyed a trip to District I's spring meeting at Lodge No. 39, Bryan. They had a rather brief meeting and it was encouraging to see so many young members in attendance. • • Stanley J. Svehlak, 63, of Rt. 1, Ennis, died in an Ennis hospital, Thursday, March 7th. Funeral services were held from St. John's Catholic Church in Ennis, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Brother Svehlak was a member of Lodge 135, Ennis.

has been with the First National Bank. Previously he was with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

In 1933 he and Miss Wilma Has• kovec were married. They have three children — Mrs. Dan (Jeanet te) Andrie, Lake Jackson, Tx.; Mrs. Ronald (Carol) Mraz, Houston, and Roger Nesuda, Norman, Okla., a top salesman for a chemical company who has already scud his quota for '74. They also have one grandchild, Jason Wayne Mraz, age 15 months, Houston.

He enjoys people and is a member of a number of organizations, including the Ellis County Real Estate Board, Local Lodge 51, RVOS; Western Fraternal Life; the SPJST Lodge 25 (his father and two uncles were charter members of this lodge; and he as present is secretary and has served two terms as president; member of the Ennis First United Methodist Church.

Before he began commuting to Pal las he was a member of the Lions Club.

Mr. Nesuda is district sales manager for the SPJST — the district including Ellis, Dallas, Ft. Worth and Waco and area towns. In this service he has about 60 local representatives under him. Mrs. Nesuda also has always been active in fraternal work and is district youth counselor.

Obviously, he will have plenty to occupy his time — including that Houston grandson, and he will look after his farm interests.

Not only that . he has a fishing boat that has not been in the water in two years, and it won't be neglected like that any more. And another thing; he now can set his own pace, and still have some time left for visiting with old friends.

ALVIN NESUDA TAKES EARLY RETIREMENT FROM DALLAS JOB BUT HAS PLENTY TO DO!

Alvin Nesuda, native of this community and active in area life, but who for years has commuted to his employment at the First National Bank of Dallas, has taken early retirement, and is happy about having more time for local pursuits.

Mr. Nesuda, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Nesuda, was born a mile and a half east of Ennis, three fourths of a mile from where he and Mrs. Nesuda now live. He was graduated from Ennis High School and then took a business course in a Dallas college. For Some time he worked at Guardian Savings and Loan, Dallas, then came back to Ennis and resumed farming, a pursuit he has always enjoyed.

For the last twenty years he has been commuting to Dallas, to employment, and for the last 15 years

4 TEXAS STATE TECHNICAL INSTITUTE When he was a junior at West High School, Mike Klish was working partime as a salesman at a hardware store in West, but he didn't think being a salesman ,was particularly interesting, Then one day he got a telephone call.

"There was this guy who had married my cousin, and he was working at the West News, and one day they had an opening and he called me," Mike said.

Mike went down to the West N e ws, checked out the job, thought it looked more interesting then selling, and went to work.

Two years later, Mike is still going to school and working at the West News partime, but now he's enrolled at the James Connally Campus of Texas State Technical Institute in Waco, studying print shop operations.

Mike said he was talking into going to State Tech by Linn Pescaia, editor of the West News and until last month head of the print shop program at State Tech's James Con nally Campus.

"He told me a trade nowadays offers a whole lot more than going to college," Mike said. "I figured I'd try it out, I didn't have anything to lose. So I did. I like it."

Mike is one of about 30 students majoring in the print shop program at the James Connally Campus. The students study subjects designed to qualify them for a wide range of jobs in the printing industry.

Mike said the stutlents come from. all over Texas. He knows students from Dallas, Ft. Worth, Galveston and Odessa.

New director of the program is George Elliott, who taught printing management the past eight years at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Elliott, a native :)f Camden, Arkansas, has a mas• ter's degree in business administration from Sam Houston and lacks Dnly a dissertation for a doctor's Ilegree in educational administraAon from Texas A & M University.

The Publication Committee was unanimous; in agreement that guidelinese should be compiled to avoid future questionable material submitted to the Vestnik for editing, being printed. A letter from our SPJST legal advisor states that.nothing prohibits the commit tee from setting guidelines and also stated that these guidelines should be revised from time to time to stay -.current. Chairman Mazanec clearly stressed that we should have; what should be and what should -not-be, foe guidelines and that these:guidelines should fit the needs of the committee as well as the editor of the Vestnik.

He said there is an advantage for him in taking the State Tech program, instead of simply starting out as an apprentice in a print shop or at a newspaper office.

As a raw apprentice, he said he would spend much of his time doing errands for pressmen while they ran the machinery.

In the State Tech program, he said he actually gets to work with the machinery and equipment him self.

Mike is the -son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Klish of West. His father is a Lone Star Beer distributor in Waco. Mike has one older brother, one younger brother and three younger sisters.

At the West News, Mike does letter press work, putting type into forms to get ready for printing.

Once he becomes a full-fledged pressman, he's not sure what he would like tc do.

"I might stay on at the West News for awhile," he said.

The meeting was called to order by President B. C. Stalmach. Alfred Gensler read the minutes and they stood approved as read. Sharon Beran and Ann Gensler gave their financial reports.

We had one member taking out additional insurance; he is Matthew 3. Hollins. New members are: Torn Duffy, III, and Stephanie Stalmach. Olin Biar made a motion to accept these as p members and Sadie Turek seconded the motion.

Motion carried. We also have a new sales representative; he is Shannon McMakin. Teddy Hejl made a motion to accept Mr+ McMakin as a sales representative and Sharon Beran seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Other business was discussed about insurance.

Your request for this information caught me at the wrong time — final exams were beginning and I was getting ready for' surgery, so you can imagine the turmoil we had here, at least in the Czech Department!

Our Charles University project is well underway. Twelve students have already applied.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Jerry Milan. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all present.

All the officers were present except our secretary who was in Austin.

Mary Pavey read the minutes of the previous meeting and these were accepted as read.

Plans were discussed for our annual Lodge and Sokol Easter Picnic which will be on Easter Sunday, April 14, beginning at 11. a.m. until ?, at the Tirks' farm in Colleyville. It will be as in the past. Bring your food and beverages for your family and friends.

Each family with children are asked to bring a dozen colored eggs for the hunt. There will be prizes and games and fishing all afternoon. If the weather is too wet, it will be at the Sokol Hall. Plan to

6 attend. Everyone always enjoys the picnics.

The youth club had 14 members present and after their meeting they enjoyed the scavanger hunt.

Brother Milan urged the members to try and attend the District III meeting on Sunday, March 31st at Lodge 35, Elk. Sister Mary Renfro won the door prize and she wasn't present, so, it will double at the next meeting, which will be the first Sunday in April — the 7th — at 3 p.m., due to our regular meeting date falling on Easter. So remember the change.

The Friendship Club had a good turnout Wednesday with 31 members present and we were happy to have as our guests, Mary and Hermina Cihacek, Jewel Clark, Mrs. Britton, Mrs. Kraemer, Helga Beckman, Alice Goins, Mr, Dockery and Mr. Vitek. We hope you come and join us again soon.

After the meeting "Happy Birthday" was sung to, Sisters Maria Prill, Jo Prochaska, Carrie Bell Milan and Brothers Joe Polasek and Mr. Johnston.

After the blessing, everyone enjoyed the delicious lunch which was followed by a song feat, with Sister Eva Dockery and Helga Beckman, playing favorite songs on their accordions. It was enjoyed by all. Games followed and a good time was had by all.

Our hostesses for the April 3rd meeting will be Sisters Helen Zich, Rose Strnad, Verna White, Angie Polasek and Mrs. Sladovnik.

We want to thank Sister Ann Langer for her donation of flower vases, and also for the flowers for table decorations.

Sister Rose Million was on the sick list and hope by now that she is better, and can attend the next meeting.

A special thank-you to Sister Eva Dockery and Helga Beckman for their fine entertainment on the accordions.

We were pleased to see several members and guests who had not been with us for quite some time, namely: Mary, Phyllis, and Hermina Cihacek, Pauline Brownlee (154), the Al Svaceks, Brother Ruzicka, Sherry Kubala and Mr. Davis, and Bessie Prochaska. Also announced was a handicraft demonstration on a Friday night which will be open to the adult members.

Several items of business were attended.

All members were saddened by the death of Brother Stanley Svehlak. A moment of silence was observed by those present.

Banik reported on the coming events of the youth club: -- They will have an egg decorating contest' and Easter egg hunt in April. They will have a booth at the District III meeting on March 31st. She also reminded the parents to get their youngsters started on their entries for the next District III YAD in June.

MINUTES

The spring meeting of District I was held at Lodge No. 39„ Bryan on March 10. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Brother Willie Trcalek at 2 p.m.

Sister Lillie Matejka, local, lodge president, welcomed all who were present.

Pledge of Allegiance was then given. This was followed by the singing of "America" by all the youth, followed by a moment of silence for all deceased members.

Appointed Vice President Brother Clint Luksa then held roll call of officers with President Leon Nowak and Flag Bearer Teddy Dixsek absent. Brother Luksa then held the roll call of lodges with seven lodges represented. He also read a list of 50-year members.

District I Youth Counselor Lola Vavra, then gave her report. She indicated YAD was going to be held in Snook, Lodge No. 9, on June 16, 1974 and camp was July 15-18 in Bastrop.

Minutes of the fall meeting were read and approved.

District I Treasurer John Vavra then gave his report.

Brother E. R. Jakubik, District Sales Representative, gave his 1973 report. Top representative for 1973 was Brother Clint Luksa of Lodge No. 9 with $166,500 written, second place went to Rudy Junek of Lodge 9, with $66,000 written, and Brother Cecil Dickinson was third with $54,000 written. He aso stated that Sister Mollie Ewell of Lodge No. 169 continues to maintain her position in the Application-aMonth which stood at 74 months.

Brother Jakubik then announced that he had resigned as District I sales representative.

VtSTNtK District I Rest Home Director Melvin Skrabanek then gave his report.

Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska presented two checks to John Vavra, District I treasurer and then gave a report from the Suprme Lodge.

Audit Committee reported that they found all books in good order.

There was no old business.

Dear Sisters and Brothers, My sincere apology for not reporting our February meeting.

Seems as thoughi the old flu bug kept visiting our house, so I will give you the highlights of that meeting before I go on to the March meeting.

A $3,000 bond for the financial secretary-treasurer was purchased by the lodge. We set up a committee for selling ads for our souvenir program book., Sister Kuykendall resigned from the entertainment committee and Sister Walzel accepted the position.

Several new members were accepted into our lodge. They are as follows: Jo Ann Mikel Oswald, Emil Jakubik, Jr., Willie John Rehak, Curtis Gordon Walzel, Patricia Louise Walzel, Benito., E. Walzel, Warren Dale Jablonski, and Chas.

B. Fisher. Brother Fisher is the administrator for S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2, Needville. The door prize was won by Brother Leroy Kamas.

Our March meeting convened at 2 p.m. Sunday, the 10th, with the Pledge of Allegiance. President Matcek expressed his thanks to

9 everyone who had anything to do with the chili supper. It was a huge success. Special thanks go to Mrs. Herbert Nowatny for the lovely Valentine cake. It was auctioned off and it netted over 09.

Mr. Paul Legendre was the lucky winner.

Minutes were read by Secretary Sister Werner and, with a slight correction, they were approved as read. Financial Seicretary Sister Bryson gave her report. Eight new members were added to our lodge and two others took additional policies. She also gave her treasurer's report.

In the report of our sick members, there are quite a few with the flu that is still going around.

(How well I Arnow!). Brothers Ludwig Silhavy and Darwin Jurchak are on our sick list and aster Frances Palat was reported back in the hospital. Our thoughts are with you, and we wish you a speedy recovery.

In old business, Brother Gilbert Walzel gave the report on the chili supper. There were 65 premium refund checks handed out for a total, of $416.25. Door prize was won by Sister Winnifred Susan. Refreshments were served after the meeting.

Dear Members, Our meeting consisted of a lengthy discussion. Members should attend the next meeting for the purpose of voting on an amendment concerning our rules and regulations. There should be a special thanks to Mrs. Linda Smetana for her labor and help in having copies of the R&R typed and readied for the members.

We wish to recognize those who are on the sick list. Mrs. Emil Pomykal and Mrs. Olga Pomykal were ill and are recuperating at home. Mrs. Ed Pomykal is at the rest home.

NOTICE TO ALL AtEMBERS OF LODGE NO. 10, SHINER

Dear Members: This is official notice to you that we are calling a special meeting of the lodge membership of Lodge No. 10, to be held Sunday, April 7th at American Legion Dining Hall, Shiner, Texas, starting at 2 o'clock p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to elect officers of the lodge and also put forth a concerted effort to reactive Lodge No. 10 after a period of inactivity and declining membership.

Supreme Lodge President Brother Nick A. Morris will be with us to preside over this meeting until a president is elected and then will talk to us about the steps to be taken in making the lodge active again. We feel that our Shiner area has considerable potential and pros pects for many new members. If things go as hoped, we also look forward to the formation of a youth club because all of us know that Shiner is in need of activities for its younger people, and the SPJST offers many activities in its Youth Department.

We urge all of you who are inter ested in "saving" Lodge No. 10 and in its reactivation to please be present at this meeting. The Supreme Lodge is also furnishing some light snacks and refreshments for the social at this meeting. Please be present and help us!

Then came the election of May Fete queen and SPJST Lodge 29 queen and Cindy Tallas, daughter of Brother and Sister Jerry Tallas is the May Fete queen and Diane Roznovak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Roznovak is SPJST Lodge 29 queen. Congratulations to both girls; they both are beauti ful.

The Spring District II meeting was discussed and will serve a good meal so let's all come hungry and enjoy a good meal. The District II reporter will give all the details about it as, it gets closer to the day.

Our May Fete was discussed. The prceeeds from the dance tickets sales will go to the youth club, so let's all support our youth and have a iarge turnout; will have good music. It will be Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six and that is good music!

Who wants to be in the May Fete may contact 'either Mrs. Paul Pasemann, Jr. or Mrs. Edwin Adamek. You may call either one — they both are working with the May Fete. Rest of the details will be worked out later at our April me eting which will be on April '7 at 4 o'clock with the Easter egg hunt after the adult meeting; all child ren (members of Lodge 29) are invited to come and join in the Easter egg hunt, so parents bring the children!

Vt STNiK LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Members, Our regular monthly meeting was held March 10. The recitation of the pledge of allegiance to the American flag was led by youth members Terry and Bobby Hykel and Doug and Darrell Uptmor.

Doug Uptmor then recited the SP JST pledge.

Flag bearer, Sister Carol Dobecka, reported there were 32 members present, and we had four visitors: Elton Stuckley, Barret Ivy, and Brother and Sister Sidney Janek.

Sister Barbara Jean Hykel then read the minutes of the previous meeting, and they were approved as read. The other officers gave their reports and they, too, were ap proved as read.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz gave her youth report. She said the youth had discussed their projects for the District III Spring Meeting, which will be held at Lodge No. 35, Elk, on March 31. The youth will go to the rest home on March 12, and, at our April meeting, they will present their Easter program and have an Easter egg hunt. Sister Schuetz then announced the king, queen, duke and duchess ior Lodge No. 6.

These are Gary Marek (king), Carol Dobecka, (queen), Darrell Uptmor (duke) and Delores Dobecka (duchess). Congratulations and good luck to these fine youth members. After the mother lodge meeting, the youth held a kite flying contest, which was enjoyed by all.

From the kitchen committee, Sister Martha Monthei said she would stay on as kitchen chairman. She then announced the names of her assistants. Sister Lydia Dobecka, card committee, reported she sent a birthday card to. Georgie Dobecka, a sympathy card to the Joe Mazanec, Jr. family, and a get well card to Robin Smith.

Dear Members and Friends, The Holland SPJST Lodge No. 80 held its monthly meeting March 2.

1974 at 2 p.m. David Ivicic, president called the meeting to order.

Flag Bearer Lori Bohac led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.

Reports of various committees were given by committee chairmen.

Clifton Martinets was recognized for receiving a plaque for selling a policy a month for 74 months.

Discussion of the picnic was carried on between the members. The 65th annual picnic will be May 26th starting at 1 p.m.

The bids and plans for enlarging the hall were presented to the members. The plans were explained in full detail and blueprints v, ere shown to the membership.

The next meeting will be April 7th at 2 p.m. All members are urged to attend because final plans will be made for the picnic.

The January monthly minutes were read and approved. Reports were given by officers and earnmittees. We appreciate the generous donation made by Brother Ernest Hanka, to our bakery sale fund. Social nights were again discussed but nothing definite was set, and members where reminded that monthly local dues were raised from 10 cents to 25 cents a month.

A special word of congratulations to Miss Tammy Altimore. This young lady won the Beasley Elemen tary School Spelling Bee Champion ship. We are wishing her a lot of luck in the next round and we hope she will win! Tammy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melroy Altimore of Beasley.

Sister Fran Popp gave a very good financial report on the membership and lodge's operations.

Sister Maxine Sefcik followed with her youth leader's report. Her precise report consisted of their well attended recent youth club meeting; West Rest Haven entertainment; another entertainment at the West Rest Haven scheduled for March 25th; and the youth club having a booth set up for a money -making project at the District III meeting which will he held March 31 at Lodge 35, Elk. Sister Sefcik asked for small item donations from the membership for the youth club's booth. She announced and introduced her Youth Leader Assistants Mona Zahirniak and Margie Haberl.

Dear Readers: The Seaton Choral Club met last night for their regular rehearsal with the following members present: Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, Lillian and Bill Kosarek, Paulina Kopeck,y, Ralph Milek, our genial accordionist. Mrs. Bennie Mikeska, Clarence and Wanona Sula, Annie Ja,kubec, Oar leader, Butch and Georgie Sodek, Otto and Matilda Hanus, Willie and Adeline Kohutek, Johnnie and Laverne Vanieek, Leon and Vallie Zavodny, Emily Stuteville, Ruby Bolton, Leon Sodek, Leo and Odell Baca and Martha Musacek. (Poor Fred still working nights to keep up the garden. Maybe he will catch up soon and be with us again). This is one of the best turn outs we've had in some time; keep up the good work and attend every rehearsal!

We sang our regular songs plus several new ones because we want to be in shape when. we are invited out to sing, so come out to every rehearsal to keep in top singing voice and you don t have to be a super star to enjoy good singing; just come out and try — you will be glad you did.

After our rehearsal we had a short business meeting discussing our participation in the Cameron Folk Festival and a coming Star

Between eating all the fancy foods, we played all kinds of, games, dominoes, cards, volley, ball, most of us admired the lovely surroundings and the great garden that Wil lie and Adeline have growing out there near their comfortable camp house. The Little Ponderosa is a real weekend retreat and a spot to enjoy.

Everyone stood and recited the pledge of allegiance. Our. Secretary Sister Dorothy Smith read the minutes of the previous meeting.

The new members were welcomed to join our lodge.

Several business matters were dis cussed also the need for a lawn. mower. We appreciate Brother Ralph Smith and Brother David Moore seeing about getting one.

All of us look forward to spring again and seeing the yard of Love lady Lodge 74 with beautiful roses which were donated and planted by our energetic (and so many in-

vEsrNix terested) members. I can see it's time-consuming and a lot of hard work was put into this project, how ever, it is greatly appreciated.

We are also looking forward to seeing many visitors come to our Fourth of July celebration and making plans for that wonderful occasion. 'I have already heard folks from Dallas looking forward to this Fourth of July celebration to come to be with us.

I am sure all of you know of the games on Tuesday nights every week. The proceeds from games went for a popcorn machine and it began its use at last Saturday night's dance. Congratulations to all who made this possible!

The bird bath was donated by Sister Linda and Brother David Moore, and the bird house was donated by Ross R. Hurst; seems we have some wonderful nature lovers.

Sorry to hear about our sick friend; we all wish her a speedy recovery. It was up to all interested members to support her family in a way made possible by a $25 monthly payment to help ease their financial problem.

Needville Lodge No. 81 is in process building a new building. We are interested and are giving a small support of $35 for advertising.

At present there are 531 members in Lodge 74. We are' looking forward to our next meeting April 7. All of you come if possible and bring a covered dish, as we had at our last meeting; a variety of good things to eat, stew, fruit salad, potato salad, beans and macaroni, fried chicken, fresh bread and jelly; all had a good supper. It was hard to leave the pleasant sisters and brothers after the meeting, but ones chores at home needed to be done.

La Grange, who came on the bu with the members of the banc The Turveys are the parents Mrs. Elsie Fruedenberg from Alvir Tx. Her husband John and taw other couples usually meet ther and make a party of it. The Frue denbergers from Alvin are regule guests at our lodge dances, as was told, and love it. Friday, March 8th was a nil pleasant evening planned for lodge committees. It was a lovely party and, as I understand, there will be a "Workers" party sometimes later in the year (If you wish to be recognized, don't hesitate, get in line and put yourself to work!) These parties are always nice it gives each and every one a shot in the arm to do more next time. Thanks to the Board of Trustees for proposing the idea of having appreciation parties to the membership for approval.

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE Net Figures For 1973 Dear Members: Now that our annual statement to the Insurance Department in Austin and the actuary's work have been completed, we can report to you on the net gain figures for 1973, as of 31 December 1973.

First of all, NA e are proud to report another good year for the FIPJST. During the past few years, the SPJST has continued in its overall growth, both in membership and •

insurance in force. Since net gain is the only real measure of a company's growth, I wish to submit that for the year 1973 we had a net gain of 1,681 members and a net increase in insurance of $7,289, 327. Compared to other fraternal societies, these figures are quite favorable.

A special tribute for these excellent results goes to the entire Insurance Department, from the vice president of the Supreme Lodge on down. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of all district sales representatives and lodge sales represen tatives for these fine, results. As a matter of fact, the credit for this effort is also extended to all of these in the SPJST who have. in their own way, helped promote the SPJST. All of us are, in fact, "salesmen."

We have a total of 48,431 certificates in force as of 31 December 1973, for a total of 84 258.742 in life insurance coverage, an increase in both categories.

Our assets now total in excess of $20 million, an increase of 4.67 percent over last year's 3.94 percent.

OuIr solvency ratio stands at 122.17, which constitutes $122.17 for every $100 in liabilities. also an increase.

Our surplus fund for the protection of certificate holders is in the amount of $3,635.'775.62, an increase over last year.

Regarding prpduetion figures for 1973 (overall before net), we received 3,666 applications (3,456 applications last year) for $12, 549,500 in life insurance, both increases over last year. All districts except one made their quotas for 19'73. It should also be reported that the net increase in 1973 on our mortuary reserve investments was 5.48 percent which is an increase over that of 1972's figure of 5.19 percent.

All of these figures point up the fact that the SPJST is definitely a big business and actually, has been for a number of years. Our overall financial posture is very stable and sound. I feel that all of us can take credit for this nice growth and I believe that your Supreme Lodge can be credited with some very sound management and good business practices. We have invested wisely and managed your money well. These investments and

Wednesday, March 20, 1974 overall good management of our re sources keep members' pelicy costs. (premiums) as low as possible. The SPJST has an enviable reputation among fraternals in Texas.

We have set the same quotas for each district for 1974 and with everyone's cooperation we will achieve our goal. I am confident that we will.

Seven Percent Refund To Lodges.

The 7 percent to lodges for 1973 amounted to $85,742.86.

Premium Refund. The premium refund checks sent Out every month by Financial Secretary Zabcik's department 10 individual mem bers amounted to $190.060.01 for 1973, plus $2,999.10 to the ludges for postage for handling these premium refund checks, per Art. 36y of our by-laws.

District Youth Fund. The checks for this fund have been distributed to the district treasurers in those district meetings that have been held so far this year. The rest will be distributed soon. This is the fund that is paid on the basis of 15 cents for every certificate, in the district held by those 16 and over as of 31 December 1973, per Article 53g of our by-laws. The complete figures for this fund appear at the end of this report.

Camp Fund Allocation. The camp fund allocation to each district is being computed and will be sent to the district youth counselors soon. SYD Sister Massey will have these figures in the Vestnik shortly.

This is the fund that is received by the district youth counselors, is controlled by them, and is disbursed by them. A' district audit committee is to audit this fund and to report to the membership at least once a year.

District General Expense Fund.

The Supreme Lodge is contributing the sum of $150 a year to the general expense fund of each district as set forth in Article 53h of the by-laws. This is the by-law that was passed in the last convention and we hope it is of some help to the district officers in defraying their expenses in conducting official business within their district.

From all of this, you can see that a good deal of money finds its way back to the membership via the districts and local lodges.

New Officers In Lodges. By now,

VESTNtK all the lodges have held their elections and installation of officers elected for the new term. These new officers are into the third month of their terms. We congratulate all the newly-elected officers and wish them success in their terms, and salute all of the outgoing officers, since in many instances, this marked the end of long terms of service to their lodge.

Mergers And New Lodge Halls. some of our lodges have merged in order to form stronger units. Some lodges are seriously considering the construction of a new lodge home; in other lodges, an effort is being made to reactivate lodge activity after some years of dormancy. The Supreme Lodge will continue to assist these lodges in whatever way possible. Reactivation of a dormant lodge, in my opinion, is one of the most challenging tasks that can be undertaken. In some instances, it can be clone because it has been proven that it can be done.

Calendars And Rituals. Perhaps it is a little late for 1974 calendars, but we still have a number on hand and if any member would like a 1974 calendar with our state king and queen in color on the front panel, please let us know and we will be glad to mail it to you. We also mailed out our new rituals recently at the rate of three copies per lodge. If any lodge or individual would like a •copy of the ritual, please let us know and we will send it to you.

We had an excellent year in 1973 and we believe that 1974 can be an even bigger and better year.

We thank all of you loyal members and supporters for the progress and growth that the SPJST has experienced and with your continued good will and enthusiasm we will continue this trend toward a bigger and better Society.

Youth Department. At this time of the year, the Youth Department and everyone involved in it is busily engaged in making plans for the many pending youth activities district YADs, state YADs, camp, and local eliminations on the lodge level. There is much to be gained from this youth program and we hope that the parents encourage their youngsters to participate whenever and wherever they can.

17 take advantage of it. The dates for the various district and state activities are being forwarded for publication in the Vestnik. A few minor changes are in the offing in the Youth Department, and as soon as these have become final, ycu will be notified.

Finally, these thoughts: What makes the SPJST a successful enterprise? Aside from the business part of our operation, the pillar of our Society is the members' attitudes concerning it — a group of people who have an unwavering and constant devotion, loyalty and trust in what we are, what we are (icing, and in our goals. These are winning attitudes and they are sometimes more important than ability itself.

A person who's made a mistake will feel a lot better if he finally blames himself than he will if you blame him. It is a lot easier for the "recipient" of criticism to accept it if the giver also accepts part of the blame.

Someone once said, "There is no limit to what a man can accomplish if he doesn't care who gets the credit for it."

Success has a lot of fathers: failure is an orphan.

One of the most important trips we can make is to meet the other fellow halfway.

STATE YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT DAYS — 1974 TO: All Lodges Although it is early in the year, it is a good idea to make these arrangements as soon as possible for many good reasons. I am referring to the State Youth Achievement Day (Royalty).

Any lodge wishing to host the State Royalty competition should get in touch with this office as soon as possible. We have set the date for this competition for Sunday, September 8, 1974. We would like to hear from all lodges interested in hosting this event no

later than Thursday, April 25. In this way, we can give all lodges an equal opportunity to bid to host this event. Send your inquires directly to this office.

It might be added that a good PA system is required for this occasion, plus good lighting, plus a platform about 20 feet long and 3 feet wide that is to be placed in front of the main stage. We have had this at the last four State YADs and it has proven to be very successful.

Also, the host lodge should be prepared to serve a meal to those in attendance. It is difficult to estimate the number of people who will be attending this event, but judging from past experience, we have had anywhere from 300 to 450 attending this occasion. This office has also hired and paid for the orchestra that has furnished music for dancing after the State Royalty, so all of these arrangements will be taken care of from this office.

The other part of State Youth Achievement Day tarts, crafts, talent, and Beseda) will again be held in a high school auditorium, the plans for which have not yet been finalized. The date for this event has been set for Sunday, August, 18, 1974.

Send in your bids at your earliest convenience and they will receive proper consideration by this office.

I hope all you youth of the district are planning to attend. As each youth club that has three-fourths of their active members present will receive a cash award. Each youth club that has a skit or some number on the program also will receive a cash award. Again this year each youth club can have a booth of items for sale. Such as crafts, food, canned food or anything that will sell. Each club will

19 keep their proceeds. Each booth will have the name of the youth club on it and have all the items fpr sale with price tags attached.

June 9 is the date for District IV YAD. Camping dates are not official, yet, but we'll camp again this year at Buffalo Gap. April 8 --- SI a.m. to 5 p.m. — is the date for our Youth Leader Training Seminar at IOOF Hall, 1909 Pine St. Abilene. We would like to have a representative from each of our lodges in District IV since these meetings are very constructive. This is where the YAD and camping is planned, so come and help us make plans so we can get bigger and stronger. We need to encourage our youth; SPJST has nice rewards for every one who is willing to participate in the planned activities.

Read your Vestnik because I will be doing my corresponding through it, and this will save me a lot of writing, and ten cents each time I mail you a letter.

Sales will be throughout the noon hour when we wilt have outside guests coming in to eat.

After lunch we will have our youth program fellowed by crafts.

After craft session, we will play outdoor games.

About our fuel situation — I just checked out Mahan's Station about 1/2 mile from Paul's Restaurant on Highway 181 north of Floresville, and he is open on Sunday and has never been without gasoline. Plan to attend our meeting, you will be able to buy gasoline and we will be serving a real old-fashioned barbecued chicken dinner with all the trimmings.

Wednesday, March 20, 1974 LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Readers, Our youth club had a skating party at the Lufkin Skating Palace February 16 during the afternoon session. There was a good turn-out with 30 members going. We all met at the Lodge at noon at which time we boarded the cars.

We got to Lufkin by 2 o'clock. We skated for two hours before we went home.

We at the youth club would like to thank the owners of the Lufkin Skating Palace for allowing us to come to their fine establishment. There is also a very special thanks going out to the ladies who drove us to Lufkin: Mrs. Hafner, Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Langham, and to the Charanzas for the use of their station wagon.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Hallettsville Youth Club held its monthly meeting March 10 at the Grant Building.

President Annie Zabransky called the meeting to order. Secretary Sandra Holy read the roll call followed by the treasurer's report.

Then the secretary read the minutes of the previous meeting.

Under old business we discussed the charity we gave the Hallett-. sville Rest Home. Then we discussed new business which consisted charity for the Steven's Convelescent Rest Home. We decided to send a pot flower there for Easter.

We also planned our parties for the next six months. Then the meeting was adjourned. Afterward the women played games and the

Dear Readers, Our youth club of Lodge 54 entertained at the West Rest Haven on Monday night, March 11 to a large number of residents who enjoyed our program very much.
