PUBLICATION COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES TEMPLE, TEXAS October 28, 1973 Chairman E. Chairman Mazanec introduced the guests, 'Linn Pescaia and his wife, Sue, as well as the wives of PC members Mazanec, Hranicky and Miculka.

Chairman Mazanec read a few letters from President Nick Morris of the Supreme Lodge, one of which stated that because of commitments to a District I meeting in Snook, Texas, he could not attend the PC meeting. Supreme Lod ge Vice-President Joe Hejny entered the meeting and greeted everyone with a "Hello". Linn Pescaia gave a resume of his connection with the Cechoslovak Publishing Company as the new owner, and stated that former owner Holasek comes to the printing shop each day to leak around and offers his advice on any problem that arises. He also gave a detailed explanation of how offset printing works as opposed to the old method of printing the Vestnik.

The editor explained the picture contrast of the new style pictures in the Vestnik versus the ones formerly used.

Chairman Mazanec presented let ters of complaints he had received and explained how he had, by letters, taken care of the complaints.

He also stated that he disliked the way the plaque presentation to Sister Frances Olexa (former Chair man of the PC) came about and regretted that it happened the way it did, but it is now water under the bridge and should be forgotten. Mazanec said he made minor changes in letters written by the PC, one to the officers, directors and the PC, and one to the previous PC meeting held January 20, 1973.

Discussion concerning letters of helpful suggestions for the PC followed. Motion by Miculka to have the copies of letter suggestions sent to the PC members was a p -proved.Thltrsofugetins for our guidelines were tabled until our next meeting in January, 1974.

The editor submitted letters to the PC for permission to print in the Vestnik. A motion that certain revisions and deletions in the letters be made and then submitted

3 for publication was made by Hranicky, seconded by Skrabanek, and approved.

Motion was made by Geistman, seconded by Angeline Kristinek, and carried to authorize pictures on the front page of the Vestnik whenever it is to improve the image of our youth activities, and other pertinent information that portrays Benevolence, Humanity and Fraternalism of our SPJST Society.

Next meeting to be held at 10 a. m. in West, Texas, on the fourth Saturday of January 26, 1974. Hanus is to notify all PC members three weeks in advance of this called meeting.

CHORAL CLUB The Seaton Choral Club met for rehearsals at the Seaton Star Hall with the following members present: Frank and Ellenore Spanhel, Otto and Matilda Harms, William and Lillian Kosarek, Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, Johnny and Laverne Vanicek, Butch and Georgia Sodek, Ruby Bolton, Clarence Sula, Leon Sodek, Emily Stuteville, Vallie Zavodny, Fred Klusacek, and Annie Jakubec, our leader.

Many fine songs were rehearsed and everyone present enjoyed the evening even though) the weather outside was bad.

Brother Leon Zavodny was absent due to illness and we missed him very much; Leon is not only a good singer but also a good accordionist. Hurry and get well, Leon, we need you at our rehearsals.

After our rehearsal we had a short meeting and pictures of our Christmas party were reviewed by those present. Discussion was held about the time to start our rehearsals due to the new time and it was decided to begin at 7:30 p.m., so please be present and on time. I would also like to call your attention to the fact that, at the next rehearsal we will elect new officers to lead us in 1974 and you should be present to help elect those of your choice. Next rehearsal was set for Tuesday, January 22, which will be. past by the time you read this.

The pledge of allegiance was recited by all present. All the members stood in a moment of silence in memory of James R. Mason, the father of our vice president, James Wilbur Mason.

We want to wish a speedy recovery to Sisters Bonnie Steinman, who was just released from the hospital, and Ann Johnson, who is in the Twelve Oaks Hospital in Houston.

Our sincere condolence to Sister Kacir and all the family. Brother Kacir was loved by all and will be missed.

LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Members: Our last regular meeting was held on Sunday, January 6 at 2 p.m.. with Vice President Johnie L. Vanicek convening the meeting in the absence of President Leon Zavodny. Brother Zavodny was ill with the flu. Flag Bearers Nicholas Morris and Gary Pavlica led the assembly in the pledge of allegiance to the United States Flag.

We proceeded to the unfinished elections before installation of officers. Bro. Howard Stefka is the new youth leader, with his wife, Jerrie, and Sis. Clara Lou Allen as his assistants. We congratulate all of the youth leaders and, with everyone's cooperation they will be successful leaders, so everyone back them up and that also includes the lodge officers. The new flag bearers , are youth club members Stephen Morris and James Allen.

Wednesday, January 23, 19'74 youth leader's report. She reported 28 juniors, 14 teens, 3 visitors and 2 new members. The social for both clubs was a giblet gravy supper and game night Friday, January 11 at 7 p.m. Everyone present enjoyed the supper and the games.

Sister• Vanicek thanked all of the youth and their parents for all the cooperation she received during her tenure as youth leader. President Henry Breitkreutz then called the meeting to order, and also welcomed our guests, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Schuetz, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hykel and children of Lodge No. 6, Donna Haynes, Kathy Pavelka,, Ernest Clemmons and Pauline Culverhouse. We were happy to have them; all of you come out and visit with us.

Secretary Albert Banik read the minutes of our previous meeting and they were approved as read.

He then read a, thank-you note from Barbara Pavelka, and also correspondence 1 from Nick and Dorothy Morris, Rudy Sefcik, and Louis Steffek.

The treasurer's report was given

by Henry breitkreutz, Jr. Rosemarie Banik gave her youth report stating that the youth club will have a cake walk at our Saturday night dance on February 9, so you mothers don't forget to bake a cake; also anyone else who wishes to donate a cake is welcome. I'm sure it would be appreciated., Randy Pavelka will bring the birthday cake for February.

Those having birthdays in January were: Jerry Pavelka, Rudy Zalman, Amy Trussel ,and Adolf Beralek. Kitchen Chairman Lydia Vicha gave her report and thanked everyone for helping and e spe -cialythosew lpdoutnNew Year's Eve. Refreshment Chairman Henry Breithreutz gave his report and also thanked everyone.

Eugene Pavelka gave his last report as floor chairman. He also gave a summary of each hand which had played for our dances for the past seven years, while he has been hall ! manager. He then recalled some of his experiences with the public during that time.

And also stated that he and his family had tried to set at good example. He then wished good luck to the incoming floor chairman, Albert Banik.

Albert Banik then spoke a few words in behalf of all the members, thanking Eugene and his family for the many years of good service. He then asked everyone to rise and 'give them a standing ovation.

Albert Banik then said that he would try and do his best as a new manager, and that Charlie Pavelka and Ernest Banik would assist him.

Vernon Dulock said that he would keep check on the heating and airconditioning. The dress code was then discussed.

President Henry Brietkreutz appointed Marvin Camp, Vernon Wood and Eugene Pavelka to the Audit Committee.

Resolution Committee: Rudy and Inez Zalman and Rosemarie Banik.

The lodge approved a money donation to the Gene Edward Pavelkas, who became the proud parents of twin boys in December.

They are still in the hospital, being detained until they reach 5 lbs. each.

Dear Brothers and Slaters, Now that the Christmas and New Year's wish is over with, I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate Becky Wright and to apologize to the members of Lodge 88.

First, the congratulations. In February of last year I was fortunate to be sponsored by Lodge 88 to spend a week in Washington, D. C. with my high school on the Close-Up program. When I returned, I started a fund to send someone from our lodge this year, too. Becky was chosen from three candidates to go to Washington.

Becky is an A student and a senior at St. Pius High School. She has been a Lodge 88 princess, she is currently an LIT and was a tremendous help in building up the

The president called the meeting to order followed by the pledge of allegiance and a moment of silence• for departed Brother Charlie Meyer. Sister Werner read the minutes of the previous! month's meeting, and they were accepted as read, after a minor correction.

The minutes of the special meeting held Sunday, January 6th, were read and accepted. At the special meeting the majority voted to build a new lodge hall. The construction is to begin on approximately February 24, 1974.

President Matcek read the list of members who are to receive their 50-year pins. He also read two thank-you cards sent by Brothers Robert and Richard Christ for the Christmas packages sent by the lodge. They are serving in the armed forces.

Retiring Financial Secretary John Kolaj a gave a complete financial statement for the year 1973.

Sister Emily Kolaja gave the report of the members who received get-well cards. They are Brothers Jerry Suchma, Joe Straznicky and Sister Hattie Shefcik.

The get-well cards with stamps were donated by Sister Albino.

Sister Kolaja also reported on the Christmas gifts given to the residents at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. TI in Needville.

The date for the annual chili supper was set for February 13th.

Serving will begin at 5 p.m. Members who wish to help will meet on January 23rd at 7 -p.m.. to make posters and outline preparations for the supper.

The Auditing Committee will meet at the lodge hall on January 28th at 7 p.m. to audit the lodge books.

Discussion was ' held on the bonding of the financial secretarytreasurer. President Matcek had a quota from a local insurance company which was approved.

To raise money for our new lodge hall a project to sell ads to local business was discussed. A motion was made and seconded to table this iternuntil more information is received.

Motion was made and passed to elect an Entertainment Committee.

The five members to serve on the committee are as follows: Brothers Kenneth Bryson, Harvey Bryson, Wayne Warren, Sisters Willie Mae Kuykendall and Wanda Warren.

A request was made by the historian, Sister Bessie Franek, that any member who has newspaper clippings or other items pertaining to the history of Lodge 81 should contact her, A new member, Brother Wayne Warren, was accepted into the lodge, and Sister Diane Graber's JT was converted to an adult policy.

Premium • refund checks were handed out. by President Mateek'.

The meeting closed with Brother Antone Pesak winning the door prize of $1. He then donated the dollar to the building of the new hall.

LODGE NO. 135, ENNIS Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge No. 135, Ennis, elected officers for the coming year on December 9th, 1973. Actually, it was more of a re-election instead of an

10 election. All of the officers were doing such a good job that the members decided to keep them for another year. The only change was in the office of vice president due to the fact that he and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Slovak, moved to another town. Mrs. Irene Christian was reelected as youth leader and Mrs. Adele Valek was elected as her assistant.

Our meeting had a small attendance. We would like to encourage fall of our members to please try to attend our February meeting.

This meeting was changed from the second Sunday in February to the first Sunday which falls on February 3rd.

Sokol's 3rd anniversary celebration is scheduled for February 9-10.

The Jody Mikula orchestra will play for the dance on Saturday night the 9th of February. There will be a dinner Sunday the 10th, starting at 11:3.0 a.m. A gymnastic program will begin at 1:30 p.m. A free dance follows the gym program from 4 to 8 p.m. Music provided by Frankie Vrla and his orchestra. On January 15, 1974, at the Bluebonnet Nursing Center in Granger their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jno. D. Trlica, of Austin, along with the residents of the nursing home surprised Jno. and Vlasta with a G9th Wedding Anniversary Party.

A decorated pink and white cake with "Happy 69th Anniversary — Jno. and Vlasta" was served along with other refreshments.

Mrs. Trlica recalled that since their marriage they have made their home in Granger where Mr. Trlica had been a photographer and insurance man until his retirement. Their marriage was blessed with five children, eleven grandchildren, and ten great grand children.

NO. 79, CORPUS CHRISTI

Corpus Christi Lodge 79 and Anton Cermak Lodge 56 of Corpus Christi merged Sunday, January 13, 1973 at a meeting held at Sokol Hall. SL President, Nick Morris presided over the meeting during the selection of a name and number for the new lodge and also during the election of officers. The membership voted to name the new Lodge Corpus Christi and the num ber 79 will be used since No. 79 was the first SPJST lodge formed in Corpus Christi and has the longest history. However, it must be remembered that this is a new lodge and all members are urged to attend meetings and support the new officers in their effort to make our new lodge bigger and better than ever.

Officers elected were Bro. Frank C. Sacky, president; Sister Libbie Peters, vice-president; Bother Monta Foster, secretary; Sister Mil lie Elzner, financial-secretary; and Brother Frank Veselka, treasurer.

President F.C. Sacky appointed Sis. Mary Ann Klanika youth leader and Brother Randy Sijansky assistant youth leader and flag bearer.

He also appointed Bro. John Stasa Czech reporter and Sister Anna Marie Moss English reporter.

Before the meeting adjourned, Brother John Stasa was presented with two engraved plaques in appreciation of his many years of

service in behalf of Lodge 56 members. He served as president of the lodge for over three years and secretary for sixteen years. Bro. Stasa started his work with SPJST at the age of 22 and since he is 83 years old this means sixty-one years of fraternal service. There are few who attain such a record.

There are many benefits to be derived from belonging to an organization such as our SPJST. One of the major benefits which has been overlooked by our Corpus Christi members who have children, is the youth club. A new youth club will be organized at our February meeting under the guidance of Sister Mary Ann Klanika. There is no better place for your child to develop leadership qualities; artistic abilities, self-confidence, an ability to get along with others, and the many other good qualities necessary for a better life, and have fun at the same time. Mark your calendars to attend all SPJST meetings the second Sunday of every month nd bring your children. Meetings start at 2 p.m. at Sokol Hall. In the event of a change of date or time, a notice will be sent to the Vestnik, however this is very unlikely, so remember the second Sunday of every month.

Dear Members: I have just written a short letter to be published in the Vestnik and find that I had left out some things that I thought I should bring up.

First, I would like to extend congratulations to Sister Alice Hafner and Brother Rudy Hefner, for being chosen 'Man and Woman of the Year, 1973" of our Lodge No. 74. Sister Alice Hefner received a beautiful necklace with a beautiful gold plated watch and Brother Rudy Hafner received •a shirt and a gold plated tie clip; these gifts were given by members of Lodge 74.

We had a fantastic turnout for our New Year's Eve dance. The lodge was decorated very pretty and I have heard many people say "this was the nicest they had ever seen the ballroom." Thanks to all the members who had worked so hard to make it such a success before and after.

I would like to remind all of you members that we now have about 500 members: Come to our monthly meetings which take place the first Sunday of every month at 4 p. m.; everyone of you! even if you don't do more than vote and have a voice an some of the matters concerning the business of our lodge. Remember: this is your lodge! It is not good for the lodge„ if only a few make the plans and spend money on some of the things that •may not be essential for the lodge.

We have voted to expand our lodge on the west side 40x80 for the youth to have a place to have their craft and also additional room for more games. I think this is good, providing there is an urgent need for it.

I had been brought up from poverty; I have made a "survival test"

in 1937 and 1938; I know the value of a dollar; I believe in getting ahead; I think we should make several payments on our lodge in advance. The Supreme Lodge has made it possible by helping us with a 100 percent loan at such low interest (5 percent) to built our lodge home; and I think to show them our appreciation for the great help, in return, we should repay them as soon as possible.

I had been informed that Lodge 88 paid for their $250,000 lodge building in just five years; I think that is great! Now they are able to help in civic and charitable donations wherever help is needed; good sincerity is good for every citizen. We should all put a little aside, and be prepared for the rough spots in life.

Brother Sefcik, in my last letter, 1 reported that Sister Slivena MichIca was elected reporter and it should have read: Brother Chester Shmoldas, instead. I had reversed it because SL Vice President Joe B. Hejny praised Sister Slivena Michka for doing a real good job as a reporter and, of course, I agree with him, so I guess we will do it together and take turns.

We are happy to know aiesley Scott is recovering very well from injury caused by being involved in a car and truck accident, and also Betty Patton has been admitted to a hospital, but recovered and seems to be doing ok.

I would like to congratulate all the new officers who replaced the outgoing officers. I hope and wish best of luck to all!

Fraternally, Helen Zabransky, Y1, -SPJSTLODGE NO 88, HOUSTON Dear Members and Readers: As most of you know by now, I did not accept the nomination for youth leader at the annual meeting. The new youth leader starting in June will be Mrs. Mary Frances Wahlberg. Congratulations to her! She has been the teen leader tor the past year and has done a very good job. With all the youth and parents' support, I know she will continue to have a bigger and better youth club.

The junior club has become so large, it was decided to have an intermediate club at least until June and, if it works out, may con tinue. Miss. Marion Kadlecek, one of our leaders in training (LIT) and ex-youth club member, will conduct the intermediate club meetings and keep the point sheets.

The age of this new group is 11 through 12 and some 13-year-old.

They were happy to have Marion as their leader and I was, too. We will still have most of our socials together but the meetings will not be so crowded.

We will go skating January 27th.

If you were at the last meeting, you will be called as to the time and place. We will have a Pizza party after skating.

The teen club went bowling Saturday with a party later at Kim Perry's home. I was proud of all the teens who came to vote and help with the annual meeting.

Remember the juniors and intermediates are helping the teen club with their Mexican supper by selling tickets. There will be a prize for the most tickets sold. The supper will be February 1st from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

We will go to the Rodeo March 3rd. The performer 'will be Elvis Presley. We will discuss this at our next meeting February 3rd.

Dear Members and Readers: The youth club held their meeting January 8th. The attendance was very good and we had three visitors. We wore glad to have you and come visit us again.

Our guest speaker was West Fire Chief Eugene Bajer. His talk was very interesting. Thank you very much for your fine talk and for coining to visit our youth club.

I regret that I am late with my Christmas program report because I was little under the weather and very busy.

The ladies in the kitchen prepared a delicious supper during the Christmas party. Following the sup per, the youth club presented their program.

Dear Members and Readers: The monthly meeting of our youth club was called to order by Carolyn Hermis on Friday, January 11, 1974, at & p.m.

The pledge of allegiance was led by Loretta Braada. The roll was called by Carol Janik, and she also read the minutes of the previous meeting. The treasurer's report was given by Adolph Pavlicek.

The birthday celebrant for the month was Carol Janik. The youth club elected a new treasurer, Adolph Pavlicek.

We have some new members.

They are Sharon Cegielski, Loretta Brazda, Margie Brazda, Eddie Brazda, and Denise Andrews. We Want to thank you all very much for joining our youth club. Our visitor was Elle Schoenstein.

On Saturday, Deomber 22, 1973, Lodge 142 had its Christmas party

VtSTNtK and dance in our new lodge. The youth club gave a Christmas play called "A Christmas Story," which was very good. Everyone had a real good time with Santa Claus.

The youth club will have a cake sale on Saturday, January 20, at 10 a.m., at Kmart on 19th Street.

The youth club will be going horse, back riding real soon. And we will soon start selling candy.

The door prizes were won by Elle Schoenstein, Dennis Veselka, Margie Brazda, and Denise Andrews. The meeting was adjourned

Dear Readers, Sunday, January 13, we held our monthly meetings.

At our youth meeting we decided to give away a box of Valentine candy at our next meeting. We also decided to give Valentine charity to the Hallettsville Rest Home. Reports were given on our different December activities.

After the meeting, refreshments were served. The door prizes went to: adult, Debi Ulcak; youth, Emery Gallia. The January birthday cake was won by Tommy Holy.

LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY Dear Members, .i really enjoyed the talk on "What The Policeman Does." Sgt. McKinzey certainly gave us a very educational talk. I also enjoyed looking at the equipment that he brought along and we saw a small sack of pot. I would like to thank Mr. Harrison and Sgt. McKinzey for speaking to us at our youth club meeting.

I didn't get to attend the rodeo because we had a basketball tournament. I knew I missed a good event because I like rodeo very much.

We had a good turnout at the last meeting. Remember and attend the next meeting February 12 at 6 p. m. at the Academy School. We will be discussing activities.

Brother Sralla had lived in Pleasanton about 35 years. He was employed in the meat department at Ricks Co., for some years and later operated his own meat market for some time and also did carpentry work.

Requiem Mass was offered for Brother Sralla at 11 a.m. from St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Pleasanton by Rev. Thomas O'Brien and interment was in St. Andrew's Cemetery No. 1.

Brother Sralla was born on July 13, 1896 in Shiner. He was married to Mary Sykora on September 17, 1917 and served in World War I. Surviving Brother Sralla are his wife, Mrs. Mary Sralla; two sons, Eddie Sralla and Clarence Sralla of Pleasanton; three daughters, Mrs. Alice Rakowitz of Pleasanton, Mrs. Dorothy Ivanhoe of Fort Stockton and Ma's., Elsie Kramer of San Antonio; also nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Lukas Sralla, and three sisters, Mrs. Annie Hrna, Mrs. Vlasta Flowers and Mrs. Gusale Tieken, all of Floresville.

Pallbearers were Victor, Albert and Henry Sralla, Julius Hrna, Wayne Meadows and Jimmie Magel.

our departed lodge brother, PAUL BRUEGGMANN, who passed away Wednesday, December 19 in Schulenburg. While he had been in precarious health for several years, his death was unexpected. He had attained the age of 80 years, seven months, and two days.

He was born at Engle on May 17, 1893, son of the late Chris and Frr2dricka (Seeburger) Brueggmann. He was married to the former Katie Simecek on November 15, 1915. He was a well-known businessman in Flatonia and for a number of years, engaged in the grocery business and was a retail beer distributor here prior, to his retirement about ten years ago.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Flatonia.

Funeral services were held Friday, December 21, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Flatonia, with Rev. Anthony Matula and Msgr. Edmund Bily officiating. Interment was in Flatonia Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were John J. Pechacek, Jimmie Holub, Jimmie Stryk, Howdy Migl, Ira Blahuta, John Lang and George Pavlas.

Surviving sire: his wife, Mrs. Paul (Katie) Brueggnaann of Flatonia; one daughter, Mrs. H. W. Lehman of Houston; a granddaughter, Mrs. Tom Brayshaw of Stafford; two sisters, Mrs. Tillie Comelson of Sch.ulenburg, Mrs. Mollie Hodanek of Flatonia and a host of friends and acquaintances of this section He was preceded in death by three brothers, Louis B., Charlie and Henry Brueggmarm and two sisters, Annie Simerek and Mary Brueggmann.

Mr. Brueggmann was a member of the SPJST Society for over 50 years.

A retired farmer, Brother Honza of the Telico community, was born April 2, 1881 in Czechoslovakia, the son of Frank and Catherine Benda Honza. At the age of eleven, he came to 'the United States with his parents, settling in Caldwell, Texas where he was a young men, he moved to the Ennis community and November 22, 1904 was married to Miss Annie Haskovec of Ennis. Mrs. Honza died August 14, 1948. Brother Honza was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 25 in Ennis.

The rosary was recited at 8 p. tn.

Monday in Keever Chapel.

Requiem Mass was celebrated at 10 a. m. in St. John Catholic Church with the Rev. Emil Slovacek as the celebrant. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery..

Czech makes UH comeback in languages After more than 20 years, Texas' third language, Czech, has made its comeback to UH with a

full program of elementary and intermediate courses.

Teofil Halama, Czech instructor who has lived in the United States two-and-one-half years, said the crusade to revive the courses at UH was led by such local Czech organizations as Sokol and SPJST, the prominent Czech-Americans.

Halama came to the university in hopes of introducing Czech, and helped to establish what is now a program of elementary and intermediate courses.

He is presently working with Czech students to build a library and hopes soon to introduce a graduate Czech program to UH. Halama holds a M.S. degree in Philogy from T.G, Masaryk University in Brno, Czechoslovakia. He has taught Slavistics and Germanistics in his homeland for 12 years.

Courses are taught on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Czech is part of the Department of Spanish and other languages.

TEOFIL HALAMA, Czech instructor, teaches Texas' third language to students after a 20-year absence of the program from UH.
