Fuel shortages have now reduced to 50 miles per hour the speed at which our vehicles will move Christmas mail from one city to another or to make local delivery.

Fuel shortages may reduce the number of air taxis which we are using to transport large amounts of mail.

For these critical reasons, among many others brought on by fuel shortage,, the U. S. Postal Service appeals to you to please mail your packages

by December 3 and your Christmas cards and letters by December 8, in order to assure delivery before Christmas.

Letters and packages may be sent by airmail as late as December 15.

Your Postmaster * * West Hight School has a school paper called the "Trojan Tattler" The Trojan is the nickname for the athletic teams, band, etc., at West High, so thus the name for the very fine school paper which is under the direction of Miss Mary Dvoracek -- the students all call her "Miss D". Your editor's son, Terry, is one of the several students who comprise the Tattler staff. Following is an article that Terry wrote in the November 9th issue of the Tattler, which we feel might be of interest to our readers.

Comet Visible to the Naked Eye To Provide Year End Spectacular Americans as well as other people throughout the world will soon be able to witness with the naked eye a spectacular event — the coming of the comet of the century."

Named after its discoverer, Czech astronomer Lubos Kohoutek, the Comet Kohoutek will appear shortly before Christmas and will remain through January, 1974, in the sky. "It's only when they ,come

VESTNtK close to the sun that they become spectacular," says Kohoutek.

Kohoutek's glamourous head will be 10,000 miles across and will spread its fabulous tail over tens of millions of miles. The comet will be racing through the heavens at more than 10,000 miles per hour, but because it is 75 million miles from the earth, it will actually seem to be standing still to the earth's audience.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is awaiting the "coming." Planes will be flown with infra-red telescopes, a special comet observatory is being built and rockets carrying instruments will view Comet Kohoutek. Mariner 10 will transmit a TV picture of Kohoutek and satellite, Pioneer 8, will transmit radio signals through the tail, revealing its make-up. Astronauts of Skylab 3 may be able to view the cornet when it is close by and influenced by solar radiation.

The comet will, no doubt, cause some West citizens to remember Halley's Comet, when it was last witnessed in 1910. One Westite, Mr. Coarles Dvoracek, now 83, recalls that Halley "appeared about 4 a.m., was bigger than the average star and had a tail of smoke — the smoke being full of stars." His parents assured him that it was "just a star shedding dust." Mrs. Mary Svacek reminisces that "it looked like a star with a long tall."

But others had their beh'efs about Halley. "Some thought that there was going to be a war or that cholera was going to break out," remembers Mr. Dvoracek.

Still others thought that "the world was coming to an end."

"I was scared that something was going to happen," said Mrs. Julia Holacka., "but it was just an astrological phenomenon." Yet sonic were much more superstitious. ROAD COMMISSION ON THE SUBJECT OF APPORTIONMENT OF NATURAL GAS IN THE STATE OF TEXAS PUBLIC HEARING IN AUSTIN,

TEXAS, NOVEMBER 26, 1978 It is now apparent that far the first time since World War II Antedice's capacity to produce food arid fiber is likely to be restricted by inadequate supplies of nitrogen fertilizer. Virtually all if the nitrogen fertilier produced and utilized in the United States comes from natural gas.

According to Mr. Edward H. H 6 sen of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, American agriculture uses , about 8.2 million tons of nitrogen fertilizer. Of this total, ammonia is responsible for producing 8 million tons. Mr. Hansen estimates that the amount of natural gas needed every year for the, production of ammonia, which is in turn used for the production of nitrogen fertilizer, is .325 billion cubic feet. He also estimates that „in total the fertilizer findustry consnes about two percent of the nation's production of natural gas.

Severe shortages of nitrogen fertilizer would severely cripple, if ndt bankrupt, many farming and ranching enterprises.

As an illustration of the im of nitrogen on a crop, a 1967 experil. the ment in grain sorghum in one Texas coastal counties gave these results: Fertilized grain sorghum yielded 4,167 pounds per acre, as against a yield for unfertilized grain sorghum of 650 pounds per acre.

Wednesday, December 5, 1913 Helga Beckman, entertained the group with accordian music and Miss Beckman also did some lovely and lively folk dances which everyone enjoyed.

Special recognition was given to visitor Frances Vitovskil from Czechoslovakia; she last visited in America when she was a teenager. She was due to return home the last part of November and everyone hopes she does not wait so long to visit again.

Celebrating November birthdays from the Ladies' Circle were Lillie McMillan, Agnes Wiruble, Victor Murphy and Mr. Korteff.

Sympathy sent to member Millie Bartek and her family on the loss of her sister, Mrs. Herrnina F. Zabcik of Temple.

Our isympathy is also extended to the family of Charles Tesar who passed away in November.

Word also came from Houston of the death of Johnnie Kahanek. Our thoughts are with his wife and family.

Joe Hubenak reports his son-in-law Johnny Swinford is convalescing at home after three weeks in a Houston hospital suffering from hepatitis.

A short business meeting was conducted by our president, Brother James Kostelnik with the highlight being the surprise announcement by secretary, Brother Emil E. Matula, that we had Baxther Jaroslav and Sister Marcella Meprlik; a belated 35th wedding anniversiary and Brother Dominic and Sister Marie Netek for their belated 30th wedding anniversary; both anniversaries were in June, but, being that both couples were an their honeymoon in Europe, the celebration was delayed until these two couples returned to the United States. Brothers Kleprlik and Netek commented on their trip to the old country and members enjoyed their description of their journey. Both couples were given a gift

6 token: corsages to the ladies and boutonnieres to the men. Congratulations to Brother and Sister Kleprlik and Brother and Sister Netek.

Our November meeting was held at the Highlands Park Lions Club, again being conducted by Brother James Koslielnik, with twenty-four adult and three junior members in attendance.

This time, the highlight was the election of officers, with the following officers being eleoted for 1974: Brother Kostelnik was elected with 19 votes over Brother Bill Mares 9 votes; one vote was not valid because the ballot carried both candidates names on it. Vice President Marie 131artar was elected without opposition by acclamation; Treasurer and Financial Secretary Sister Viola Manic was elected without opposition by acclamation. Brother Alfred Kalmus, flag bearer, was elected without 09position by acclamation, and Sister Evelyn Matula was elected youth leader of Lodge 133.

It was so nice to see Sister Maly at the meeting; she was on the sick list for the last month. Sister Maly is one of our charter members of Lodge 133.

On behalf of all of the Officers, I would like 'to take this opportunity to thank the members of Lodge 133 for their vote of confidence in reelecting all of the old officers and also for their patience and coopers:tion that they all had given the officers for the past two years. A special thanks to all the members who attended the monthly meetings and a big welcome to all of the Lodge 133 members .to come and join us in deliberations at our meetings and the fun that we have fraternalizing after the meetings.

The next meeting of Lodge 133 will be Sunday, December 16 at 2 p. rn. at the Highlands Park Lions Club, 1505 South Levers. It would be a great pleasure to see the Highlands Park Lion Club filled to capacity for the December meeting, and for all our future meetings, in 1974. On Sunday, November 25, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Krejci of Rosenberg were honored by their children on their 50th wedding anniversary. A reception, dinner, and dance at the new Arne/tam Legion Hall in Rosenberg was enjoyed by a large number of relatives and friends. LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters: On November 12, Lodge 88 con ducted the regular monthly meeting. Following the pledge of a1legiance to the flag of the United States of America, the members stood in respect to the memory of departed Brothers Albert Sefelk and John Kahanek.

The secretary read the minutes and, after two corrections, , the minutes were approved. Themembers also approved 61 applicants for membership representing 055,000 insurance coverage. A card of thanks was read from the family of recently departed Brother John K. Kasper. The report of Financial Secretary Ellen Gill revealed that $23,750.16 was remitted to Headquarters for mortuary dues during the month and local dues totaled $1,111.50. There are approximately 8,500 certificates in force at Lodge 88.

Reported on the sick list were Sister Ida Hanka and Brothers Otto Mikeska, Harley Cox, and Harry Finn.

Entertainment Committee Chaix man Leander Pflughaupt reported on the entertainment functions and expressed his thanks to the sisters for donations of pastry and assistance in ally way. In the absence of Birthday Club Sisters' President Wanda Kennedy, Sister Della Kadlecek reported that

District Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska reported that the district had a very good month and the three top representatives were Sisters Della Kadlecek, Agnes Lesak and Helen Hegwood. District Youth Counselor Marlene Caraway invited the members to attend the opening dedication of the new home of Lodge 142 on November 18. She noted that Lodge 142 has consistently supported her sister Lodge 88.

The District VII fall meeting turned out good, the weather was very nice, sunny and warm, but the attendance could have been even better. We are truly grateful for those, although not members, but have children in the youth club, when called upon to work, do pitch in and help where needed. A bag "thank you" goes to Sister Mary Janak, for the beautiful decorated cake that she made and donated for our lodge's 60th anniversary, her cakes are always delicious. And wasn't the punch good with the something extra in it? Ask Thelma Hrncir for her recipe for wine punch! The decorated table, cake and punch was the project of our youth club and they did a very good job on it.

Thanks to all who helped in some way, by bringing all the good food, for baking the turkeys, and working to make the dinner the sue,cess it was.

For the benefit of those who missed the 30th anniversary of Pavelka's Orchestra party on October 20, you missed a good one!

It was held at Robstown Community Hall, which was full, really crowded -- with happy people from near and far, having a good time, they came early and stayed to the end of the dance. There was a table full with pictures taken over the years of Pavelka's Orchestra and it was quite interesting to look at the changes that have taken place over the years. Heard a remark: "Now I know why all the pictures were snapped over the years." Many pietureis were taken at the party, picture album is being, compiled so when we will look at the pictures we will always remember the party. The• day was made even more memorable for me. My mother, daughter-in-laws, other relatives and friends surprised me with a birthday party, complete with a beautiful decorated cake and gifts. Often I have

LODGE NO. 56, CORPUS CHRISTI Dear Members, The year 1973 is ending and our next meeting will be on December 9th. As I had written previously, important business will be discussed and, especially important is the decision by members of Lodges 56 and 79, whether to conisolidate into one lodge or not. My opinion is that it is almost useless to have two lodges here, both meeting an the same date and in the same place for over 30 years.

If both lodges decide in favor of the merger in this December 9, 1973 meeting, then the officers of the new lodge will have to be elected and the name and number of this new lodge chosen in the January, 1974, meeting. However, if one or both of the lodges decide against the merger, then the lodges will carry out elections of their respective officers in the December 9th meeting, and there will be no further notice of any elections for January.

After the meeting on December 9, we will have our annual covered dish combined social evening including the Sokol Corpus Christi,

Dear Members: The above two excerpts of Supreme Lodge meetings in 1971 and 1973 give us the basis for a project the Supreme Lodge would like to implement in the spring of 1974.

In the Vestnik of 14 November 1973, under the "Office of Supreme Lodge", I touched on this subject matter and stated that we would be passing on more details to you after we received confirmation from the three lodges that are to host these workshops.

These confirmations have been received and the dates are now firm. The Supreme Lodge wishes to thank the three lodges involved for their cooperation and willingness to assist and host these workshops.

Once again, the dates and locations are: Saturday, May 4th — Hallettsville High School (Hosted by Lodge No. 4) Saturday, May 11th -- Taylor, Lodge 29.

Saturday, May 25th — Ennis.

(Lodges 25 and 135) As approved by the Supreme Tod ge, the following information will pertain to all workshops at all three locations: a. Mileage only for one car from each lodge. b. The workshop sections will include lodge presidents and vice presidents in one section, lodge sec retaries in another, and lod ge financial secretaries in another. c. We are asking, and the host lodges have agreed, to have the ladies of the host lodges prepare the cold buffet and refreshments, at the expense of the Supreme Lodge.

The following schedule will be in effect for the workshops in Hallettsville and Taylor only 10 a.m. to 10:45 workshop session 15-minute break 11 to 11:45 — workshop session 12 noon to 1 p.m. -- cold buffet and refreshments 1 p.m. to 1:45 — workshop session 2 p.m. — joint session (final) The local lodge officers from Dis tricts V, VI and VII will probably want to attend the workshops in Hallettsville. The local lodge officers from District I and It will

want to attend the workshops in Taylor. Lodge officers from Districts III and IV will want to attend the workshops at Lodge 25, Ennis. However, if one of these locations is not convenient for the

officers of a particular lodge on the date scheduled, they would be free to attend the workshop at one of the other two locations; however, mileage would still be paid only for one car from each lodge at any one of the three locations.

The schedule for the workshops at the two Ennis lodges is as follows: Presidents and vice presidents will meet at Lodge 25; secretaries will meet at Lodge 135 (Sokol Hall); financial secretaries will meet at Lodge 135.

9:30 a.m. to 10:15 — workshop sessions 15-minute break 10:30 to 11:15 workshop session 15-minute break 11:30 to 1210 — workshop session

12:45 to 1:45 — cold buffet at Lodge 25 2 p.m. — final and joint flession of all sections at Lodge 25.

The reason we have scheduled the workshops at two separate lodges in Ennis is that the facilities in both lodges lend themselves more appropriately to the workshop% with more smaller rooms available for the various sections. Note that all of the sections will assemble at Lodge 25 for the noon luncheon and stay for the final and joint session.

The purpose of these workshops is three-fold: 1) pass on information to the local lodge officers so they may better serve the member ship, and 2) exchange ideas and hear some of the problems that the local lodges are having in some of the areas of servicing our meinbers, 3) and, of course, these workshops cannot help but build better relations among all of us.

We will certainly get to know each other better.

We are convinced that these workshops will be successful and we urge everyone's cooperation and, of course, attendance. We are not including workshops on youth work or insurance, per se. These two areas are quite adequately covered by Vice President Hejny and Field Manager Silas Smith and State Youth Director Dorothy Massey in their district and state seminars. Incidentally, we are using the word "workshops" to dis-

tinguish between all of the other seminars we hold and this one on lodge procedure and administration.

Lest anyone get the notion that we will be covering strictly administrative procedures and reporting methods, we will also endeavor to cover some of the areas we feel need covering in the realm of lodge inactivity, meetings, both lod ge and district, and building overall enthusiasm for lodge work.

The proposal presented to and approved by the Supreme Lodge was entitled, "Strengthening The Lodge System". When you get right down to it, this is what we will be doing in the long run with these workshops.

We must remember that our national and state laws define a fraternal benefit Society as "having a lodge systeM with ritualistic work".

The more efficient our lodges are the better we are insuring and guaranteeing our future as a fraternal benefit Society. The United States Internal Revenue Code specifies two primary requisites for a fraternal benefit Society: (a) it must operate on the lodge system, and (13) provide for the payment of life, sick, accident or other benefits to members or their dependents. Thus we see the specific reference to a "lodge system" and it is through the lodge system that we must operate and improve our services. ' Furthermore, these workshops. will enable the Supreme Lodge "to carry the campaign and the message to the people" in the lodges.

All of , us are going to learn through these workshOps. Finally, we will be busy here outlining the specific areas that will be covered in the workshops. We know many of you have ideas on what might and ought to be covered. YOUTH SECTION FROM THE LODGE YOUTH LEADERS

LODGE NO. 35, ELK I will try to give you a report on some of our activities, past and present. At our October meeting we had a, guest speaker, Eugene Pavelka, who spoke on the hartcards of spray cans. He also demonstrated with some spray cans.

Thank you, we learned a lot that day.

We had a cake -walk on October 20th and it was very successful, thanks to everyone who brought cakes and helped that night.

The youth club's Christmas program will be held on the mother lodge party night, December 8.

We will have practice on December 7, at 7:30 p.m. Also, on that night, everyone and anyone interested in helping decorate the lodge for Christmas, please come.

Our Lodge No. 35 Youth Club Christmas) party will be held December 21st and supper will be served at 6 p.m. Each family is to bring something to go with fried chicken. After supper, gifts will be opened.

LETTERS FROM THE YOUTH LODGF NO. 160, SAN ANGELO Dear Members, This past week has really been an exciting and busy one for Lodge 160. Although I was unfortunate and missed most of the action, some of the youth went to Rowena for a parade which marked the 75th Anniversary of Rowena's existence. "Miss SPJST", Kathy Simcik, represented our SPJST in the parade and was sponsored by SP JST Lodge No 49, Rowena: this was very fascinating.

On Sunday, the trip planned to Sonora Caverns was carried out and everyone enjoyed this, especially the refreshments afterward.

Don't forget our Christmas program at our December meeting.

Dear Members, The Hungerford Youth Club held a meeting in November at Gustie liolrnes' home.

Chris Holmes gave a report on the District YAD. New business was the Christmas party. Our Christmas party will be held December 9 at 1'30 p.m. at the Hungerford Building. Santa Claus will he there. Each member is asked to bring a guest.

The youth club will sack goodies for Santa Claus at Mrs. Holmes' house on Saturday, December 8, alt 9:30 a.m. Then, on December 16, we will go caroling to the rest home at 1:30 p.m.

DYC Elsie Brdecka showed the group crafts using styro-foam and sequins; each member made an article.

Our lodge club welcomed three new members Randy, Russell and Rodney Sabrsula.

Dear Members, Last Sunday, November 25, our youth club went to Sonora to see the Sonora Caverns. There were nine youth members and adults who went and enjoyed the trip greatly.

The guide told us that the cave was discovered by a sheep farmer and during that time, the farmer's dog happened to see a hole while chasing a coon; this was about in 1902. While all of us were in the cavern, we walked half a mile down and half a mile up.

RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY Brother John W. Cervenka of Granger passed 'away in a Temple hospital Thursday, November 15th, at the age of 73. He was born December 5th, 1899 in Granger, and was a retired cotton ginner and cotton merchandiser. He was a member of Granger's SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church and of Lodge Komengsky No. 20, SPJST in Granger.

Military services were held on September 13 at 10 a. m. at Nelson's Chapel in Fayetteville, ArkanSes. Interment was in National Cemetery in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The proposed draft and an accompanying report documenting the hearings and discussions gives the '74 convention delegates a picture of what the Commission considered in reaching its conclusions.

As Speaker Daniel has said, the work makes our Texas convention "the best prepared ever to assemble in the history of this nation."

Among the changes outlined in the proposed 11-article constitution, which should strengthen all three branches of government, are expansion of home rule of municipalities to include county government, broader powers for the legislature to levy and collect taxes. and annual sessions of the legislature.

Copies of the Commission's draft and commentary will be sent to every library so those who are interested may study the same materials provided convention delegates.

Jim had always heard the old saying — "A stitch in time saves nine" — but he never thought it would relate to his health.

On the urging of his wife, Jim went to his family physician for a long overdue physical examination and discovered what he had suspected all along: he was in good physical condition for a man of his age EXCEPT for one thing — high blood pressure, or hypertension.

The doctor felt certain the condition could be improved by a prescription drug. and he advised Jim how lucky he was that the condition had been found early -- while there was time to head off serious difficulties.

He told Jim there are more than 23 million Americans walking around with hypertenision. Which one national authority likened to a time bomb ticking away inside the body .. waiting to go off with a killing or crippling effect.

Jim remembered reading that The Texas State Department of Health estimated more than 1.75 million Texans suffer from high blood pressure, and now he was to findout more about this problem.

This is what he learned.

Blood pressure is simply the pres sure put on the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood through the body. Our blood pressure varies from minute to minute, going up when we are excited, and down when we rest.

These changes are perfectly normal.

But when blood pressure goes up too high, and stays that vray, a state of hypertension results.

When your blood pressure it taken, your physician uses a device known as a sphygmomanometer to determine the force of blood as it

18 comes from the heart and hits the artery walls. The highest reading, known as "systolic" pressure, records the pressure exerted on the artery by each thrust of blood from the pumping action of the heart.

The other, lower reading, is the "diastolic" pressure remaining in the artery while the heart is relaxing.

The average systolic blood pressure for a young adult male is about 120 millimeters. The diastolic pressure is about 80 millimeters. Pressures in this range are usually able to provide the body with an adequately circulating supply of blood without placing any undue strain on the walls of the blood vessels.

But a man whose systolic blood pressure remains above 150 more than doubles his risk of heart attack and has nearly four times the risk of stroke than a man with systolic blood pressure under 120.

When a person has high blood pressure, the arterioles, or the small peripheral arteries. clamp down to restrict the flow of blood.

The exact cause of the constriction of these vessels is unknown.

Nervous strain plays a role, and hereditary factors are probably involved to some extent.

Whatever the cause, the heart tries to overcome this resistance by pumping harder to push blood through the system. As a result of this increased work load, the heart muscle may grow larger and weaker for the demands put on it, and begin to lose its efficiency.

High blood pressure itself produces few symptoms, and most cases are discovered by accident or through complications which it may produce. The only typical change is the increase in the blood pressure itself. Changes in the smaller blood vessels may cause a nurnber of symptoms, and palpitations of the heart, headaches, dizziness, flushing of the face, and fatigue are often noted.

There are several degrees of hypertension, varying from a sustain ed but usually modest elevation of blood pressure, to blood pressure which is severely and persistently elevated. In general. the higher and more persistently elevated the pressure, the more likelihood of

Vt STNIK damage to the blood vessels and the heart ,brain and other organs.

While the exact cause of primary or essential hypertension is unknown, certain factors contribute to it. For instance, research, indicates that the kidneys can release a substance into the bloodstream which triggers a chain of chemical events leading to high blood presstile. Hypertension may also be caused by long-standing kidney disease, or certain abnormalities of the adrenal or other endocrine glands.

Current public health knowledge of hypertension makes it clear that everyone over 35 years of age should have regular checkups if this deadly condition is to be controlled. * Public health has many heroes — many of them unsung — and at or near the top of the honor roll are a group of professionals known 1 ,- epidemiologists.

To the layman, says the State Health Department, an epidemiologist can best bel described as a disease detective. Major concerns of epidemiology are discovery of factors essential to or contributing to disease occurrence and the development of methods for disease prevention.

As a discipline, epidemiology evolved in relation to the study of acute infectious diseases. Historically, epidemiology was born in relation to the study of the great epidemic diseases such as cholera, plague, smallpox, yellow fever and typhus. Until the 20th century, these epidemic diseases were the most important threats to human life and health.

Methods developed over the years in studying disease in epidemics are just as applicable to the study of all important infectious disease whether epidemic or not. The same principles are used today in outbreaks of diphtheria, scarlet fever, measles, infant diarrhea, syphilis or tuberculosis.

In the State Health Department, the epidemiologist may be a public health physician, a nurse, a sanitarian or other health professional.

A departmental seminar on the "Principles of Epidemiology" was presented in San Antonio on November 27. Another will be held in Houston in March to further the

In discovering answers to the cause and prevention of disease, epidemiology depends heavily on knowledge and skills drawn as needed from many other sciences.

Arriving at answers to an epidemiological puzzle may involve clinical medicine, microbiology, pathology, zoologyf, demographY, anthropology, sociology and statistics. Most often, it become a team effort.

While epidemiology at the outset was concerned primarily with the epidemics of killing diseases, it has been expanded into non-infectious diseases.

The work of epidemiologists in Texas may focusi on any upsurge of infectious disease or life-threaening condition.

The State Health Department and local health departments have had a hand in a variety of investigations which included: —Food poisonings affecting the majority of students in an Austin elementary school; —Diphtheria outbreaks in Austin, San Antonio and Elgin; —Carbon monoxide poisoning in Fort Worth; —Typhoid in an East Texas farm atmosphere; —Venereal disease throughout the state; —Unhealthy working conditions in industrial plants; —The spread of Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis from Central America.

A health condition among members of one family in a Baytown trailer park during the summer of 1971 produced some unusual results.

The first illness occurred in an 18-month-old child on July 4. Subsequent cases occurred between August 12 and August 15 in children between the ages of four and 15. They had similar symptoms, and leptospirosis was discovered as the cause.

Leptospirosis is an acute infectious disease that is naturally transmitted between animals and man by either direct or indirect contact with contaminated animals. Leptospirosis can mimic a wide variety of human diseases including aseptic meningitis, infectious hepatitis, fevers of unknown origin, influenza and polio-

-SPJSTBOATING SAFETY COURSE TO BE INTRODUCED

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will soon offer a free, voluntary, safe boating course to —eras boaters.

"The Texas Skipper's Course" is a 104-page home study program, with review and summary questions included at the end of each chapter to keep the reader up-to-date.

An end-of-course open book examination will be graded by the department. Boating safety officials say situation problems are utilized throughout the course, so the reader can apply what he has just read to solving the problems created in the situations.

"We feel that there is something for every boater in 'The Texas Skipper's Course," said Joel Block, water safety education coordinator for the department. "It's easy to slip into bad boating habits, and this course will help the boater slip right back out of them."

Block explained that this course will allow the boater to pace himself, spending as much time as he requires in grasping 0.1 problem.

Why offer the Skipper's Course?

According to Block, "Recreational boating has never been more popular and, with so many boaters, there must be some form of instruction. We hope that this voluntary program will be highly utilized by boaters throughout Texas."

Those who successfully complete this instructional program will receive a safe boater registration card and a permanent record of their achievement will be maintained by the department in Anstin.

"The Texas Skipper's Course" is scheduled to be introduced Jan. 1, 1974. Information explaining how to obtain a copy will be available in boat registration renewal forms and through Parks and Wildlife Department officers statewide.

Not that it really makes any difference but what is popularly known as the aoudad sheep is not really a sheep.

Before proud aoudad trophy owners rip down their prizes, let us explain that the aoudad is a member of the genus Ammotragus which is closely related to both true domestic and wild Sheep as well as goats.

Such a pedigree should not make the aoudad or Barbary sheep any less prized by sportsmen.

Aoudad sheep hunting is one of the most challenging sports in Texas. 'Unlike deer and antelope, aoudad do not have any large patches of white on their bodies to aid the hunter in sighting the animals.

A native of the Atlas Mountains in northern Africa, some 44 of these sheep were first released in 1957 in the Panhandle's Palo Duro Canyon.

The hunt is physically demanding and in some instances the kill is just the beginning of hard work

According to a questionnaire sent to some 900 aoudad hunters by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, 90 percent of the hunters declared that aoudad meat was good if cared for properly.

Responses ranged from "better than either deer, antelope or elk" to "everyone took a helping of both roast beef and Barbary sheep at a recent lodge dinner and those who returned for seconds took the Barbary sheep."

The New Medico survey also found that 94 per cent of the hunters would hunt aoudad again if they had the opportunity and 73 per cent of them regarded the aoudad as an excellent game animal.

There are now an estimated 3,217 aoudad in Texas and only the approximately 600 animals in the Palo Duro Canyon area are considered game animals by the Parks and Wildlife Department and regulated as such.

Elsewhere in the state there are no closed seasons or bag limits.

Prior to introduction of aoudad in, the Palo Duro, the Panhandle had only a few species of wildlife to attract big game hunters. Some mule and white-tailed deer lived around the perimeter of the canyon, but the population was small and little hunted. rood habits of the big sheep indicate that it can compete with both mule deert and cattle. However, the aoudad browse the more difficult and rugged areas of the canyon. Mule deer usually stay on the gentle slopes and cattle seldom venture at all onto the treacherous sides.

Barbary sheep or aoudad are remarkably disease-free in both the wild and captivity. New Mexico studies show that of 100 species shot and examined only one — an old sheep -- was in poor health.

Potential predators include cougars, coyotes and bobcats but no instances of predation on the wellarmed sheep have been recorded.

Adapted to both heat and cold, aoudad have the curious habit of digging in soft, moist sand with their horns to dissipate heat.

The horns have small ridges which seem to increase the surface area much like the fins of a radiator.

Mix all ingredients together: pour into a lightly greased shallow 2-quart casserole.
