Sunday, November 4 -- District VII was the last district to hold their fall meeting. The meeting was held at Lodge No. 117 in Robstown in conjunction with Lodge 117's 60th anniversary of its existence. The hostesses prepared a well-balanced menu consisting of turkey and dressing, plus homemade pastry which commenced the activity to a fair attendance, who enjoyed the afternoon.

The district meeting presided by District President Bob Bayer, was well conducted and all district officers gave precise reports of their respective activities. Re-elected District VII Rest Home Director Eugene Hrncir will again serve another 3-year term on the Rest Homes Board. Interested members are always glad to hear the report on the youth, the sales of SPJST insurance, the operation of the rest homes and the overall Society's operation. In spite of the fact that there are only two youth clubs in District VII, the youth still maintain much interest in their activities and endeavor to learn the procedure of their responsibilities.

DYC Maxine Pa.vliska graciously introduced the State YAD winners who proudly displayed their trophies to the gathering for a job well done. District Sales Representative Tillie Valchar also needs to be complimented along with her co-workers for exceeding their 1973 quota; this is indeed a great accomplishment in District WE since it's among one of the geographical districts, where lodges are rather distantly spaced from each other.

The highlight of the afternoon was the special ceremony for Sister Agnes Kucera of Lodge No. 56, Corpus Christi, who became the 23rd honored recipient of a $1,000 check (having outlived the actuarial table of her insurance certificate) in the history of the SPJST Society. She was also remembered by the members of her lodge with a pink carnation corsage and a birthday cake. The noble 96-yearold honoree, who was surrounded by her children, graciously accepted the check which was presented

by SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska.

Prior to the presentation, SL President Nick Morris touched briefly on the history of Lodges 56,

VESTNtK and '79, Corpus Christi, and 117 Robstown and of their formation and proceeded to express his congratulatory remarks to Sister Kucera in English and Czech. After the presentation, Brother Mikeska spoke to the gathering on the subject of the special occasion as well as Editor Rudy Sefcik, who xpressed his sentiments in English and Czech to the assembly.

It certainly was a worthy trip to Robstown to help celebrate their 60th anniversary and witness an impressive occasion of Sister Agnes Kucera, who still enjoys a trip to Houston with her children whenever the opportunity arises. At this particular moment, the general SPJST membership and the editor wish to extend congratulations to Sister Kucera, and may there be many healthy years in store for her.

-SPJSTNewsbnefs SL Honorary President Brother Edward L. Marek and his son, Brother Bud Marek of Austin visited with the editor and personnel of the Cechoslovak Publishing Co., recently. We appreciated their visit very much.

Greetings from the Bahama Islands were received at the editor's office from Brother and Sister Weldon Hendrick of Houston.

Brother Hendrick won the recent trip. Greetings were also received from the Mayor of West, Brother Jos. F. and Mrs. Marie Holasek who were vacationing in. Hawaii. *

Mrs. Frank J. (Mildred) Haskovec, 78, died in an Ennis hospital on Saturday, Novemiber 3rd. Funeral services were held Monday, November 5, from Keever Funeral Chapel in Ennis, with burial in Myrtle Cemetery near Ennis. Sister Haskovec was a long-time member of Lodge 25, Ennis, and was the mother of District III YC Sister Nesuda. Honorary President d L. Frank J. Brosh, 79, of Route 1, Shiner, passed 0May in Renger Memorial Hospital in. liallettsville on Tuesday, October 27. He was buried from the Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville on November 1st, and interred in the Catholic Cemetery. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 63, of Sweet Home. * * Mrs. Frances Ladevig, 65, of East Bernard, died November 2nd.

Funeral services were from the Triska Funeral Home in East Bernard on Sunday, November 4th.

Honorary President Edward L. Marek officiated for the SPJST Society. Sister Ladevig was a member of Lodge 28, Fast Bernard.

AGNES KUCERA OUTLIVES POLICY I would like to impart to you a little bit of history on the two Corpus Christi lodges, in connection with the awarding of this endowed certificate to Sister Agnes Kucera.

The original Lodge 56 was located in Yarrelton, a small community in Milam County a few miles north of Cameron. It was organized on May 5, 1905 and disbanded on 1 Octeiber 1931. The present Lodge No. 56 was organized In Corpus Christi on 27 October 1933.

(In those days, it was the practice to assign the number of disbanded lodges to newlyorganized lodges.

Former SL Secretary, Brother S. F. Chupick, tells us that this practice ceased from the time he took office in 1 January 1941, because of this confusion it caused in ke-

The other Corpus Christi Lodge No. 79, also has interesting history.

The original Lodge No. 79 (Rozbet Holliday) was located in Archer County between Seymour and Wichita Falls in what is today District IV. It was organized on 2 January 1909 and disbanded. in December 1921. The present Lodge No. 79 was organized in Corpus Christi on February 2, 1922.

Sister Kucera was originally a member of Lodge 55 in the Tours community near West in McLennan County, which she joined on 14 May 1916 at the age 39. Lodge No. 55 was organized on 3 May 1905 and disbanded on 1 April 1962. Sister Kucera transferred from Lodge 55 to Lodge 56 in Corpus Christi on 11 October 1943.

Sister Agnes Kucera was born on 15 November 1877 in Bordovice, District of Mistek in Moravia, now Czechoslovakia. She came to the United States with her parents in 1898. The family landed at Galveston, Texas and settled in Fayette County near Fayetteville. Her parents were Jan and Johana Sy-

In 1906 she married Karl KuCera, who was born in Texas and preceded her in death in 1947. She and her husband had four sons and two daughters: William, Karl, Edward, and Albin; and daughters, Mrs. Henrietta Pavelka and Mrs. Janice M. Dlabaja. Sister Kucera has 28 grandchildren and 25 great

While on the subject of the 60th Anniversary of Lodge 117, Brother Morris mentioned the multiple talents of several individuals in Lodge 117, notably Richard Urbis, Connie Hrncir, Scott Eliff. and Sis ter Thelma Hrncir.

The lodge's monthly meeting w411 be Sunday, December 2nd at 1:30 p.m. Coming dances are Sunday, November 11th from 6 to 10 p.m., with music by the New Sounds, and Sunday, Dec. 2nd, also from 6 to 10 p.m., music by the Music Masters.

The door prize this month was won by Mrs. Lena Junek.

LODGE NO. 9, SNOOK Dear Vestnik Readers, The Snook SPJST Lodge No. 9 held its monthly meeting Sunday, November 4th, at 1:30 p.m. It was preceded by a covered-dish lunch.

In this meeting the mother lodge decided to go halfway with the youth club in purchasing a PA system for the lodge.

The annual Christmas party for the lodge and youth club was set for December 15th. A meal will be furnished for this party and who can tell, good `ole' Saint Nick might just drop in. Gifts will be exchang-

ed and a Christmas program will be presented. The youth club will decorate a Christmas tree for this occasion. There will be a covereddish supper followed by an indoor rodeo in which all ages may participate. Every one is invited to come out. The youth club's next meeting is set for December 1st, at 2 p.m.

LODGE NO. 165, MOULTON Dear Members: Our last meeting was held on Sunday, October 14, at 2 p. m. with President George Technik presiding.

All of the officers were present. Everyone recited the pledge of allegiance and then. Secretary-Treasurer Adolf Wagner read the minutes which were approved as read.

The lucky door prize was won by Adolf Wagner. The meeting was then adjourned and everyone helped themselves to food and refreshments.

The next meeting will be held November 11, 1973. Please try and attend. There will be refreshments furnished by the lodge and also food furnished by the sisters of the lodge.

NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members, The weather man was not very cooperative for the annual Turkey Day at Lodge 88 on Sunday, November 4, but I understand that Mrs. Vala and her hard-working kitchen crew, along with Willie Wehring and his barbecue crew, really put on a fine dinner.

Music for the dance Sunday evening was furnished by Henry Tannenberger and his fine orchestra with that wonderful lady, Sister Estelle Kelly, on the piano.

Some people really have all the luck! Have you heard that Willie Mae Eltnis won a new VEGA at LODGE

the place she works? Willie Mae, can see Gary with his eye on this pretty new car.

Members who enjoyed the Wurstfest in New Braunfels over the week-. end were Ed and Louise Kadlecek, Frank and Mary Tilich, Gene and Evelyn Barcak. As you know, Ed Kadlecek, Jr. is one of the leaders of the Wurstfest. Oscar and Tillie Helmcamp and Ben and Albina Plasek are on their. Way there now.

From all I have heard, I'm sure that this is some great entertainment.

Jeannette Walkoviak attended the T.S.T.A. state meeting, for all directors at Galveston for three days last week-end. The meeting was held at the Flagship Hotel. Welcome back, Jeannette — Missed you Sunday at Turkey Day., In reading the daily news I find such things as flying objects in space --flying saucers and such as that — but just listen to this new one — "Flying Tigers". Now I wonder who I could discuss this matter with. It seems that these "Flying Tigers" were really moving at our Annual Turkey Day. Please call me If you have more information on these tigers.

Fraternally, Harley Cox LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Members, Our last reeiular lodge meeting was held on Sunday, November 4th at 1:30 p. m. with Lodge No. 47 President Leon Zavodny presiding. Flag Bearers Nicholas Morris and Gary Paylice led the assembly in the pledge to the flag.

A moment of silence was held in honorable memory of our deceased member Sister Janie Simek who passed away on October 28, 1973. May our dear departed rest in eternal peace. To the surviving relatives: the lodge expresses deepest sympathy.

The roll call revealed all officers were present. Secretary Sister Bolton read the minutes of the previous meeting and these were approved as read.

The only visitor present was Sitter Arm Balusek of Lodge 15, Buckbolts. Please come again because we enjoy having you among us.

Bros. John Ma kik, Sr., and Albin (Butch) Sodek were reported to be on the sick list. Brother Sodek had surgery last week and was still in intensitve care at this writing. Getwell wishes are sent and may you return to good health real soon.

We accepted the following as new members: Gary S. Hunt and Collis Joan Stracener. James Joseph Wimmer took out additional insurance.

Transfers to our lodge from Lodge 87, Temple were Kandy Sue McIver, Vivian McIver and Kathy E. McIver Wilkins. We welcome all the above named to our lodge and invite you to come take part in lodge activities.

Dr. Robert D. Allison transferred from our lodge to Lodge No. 177, Academy.

Sister Bolton read the correspondence which included the mortuary

VESTNtK dues from the Supreme Lodge and a thank-you from the Rogers School for permitting them •the use of the barbecue facilities to barbecue the chickens for their school carnival; also, a request for a donation to the Christmas Seal Drive.

The officers gave their reports as did the chairmen. Sister Lillian Kosarek read the Board of Trustees' minutes. We took action on the annual Chrtstmas party which is to be held on Sunday, December 9th.

More details will be published later as they are available. A committee of three S:sters Lillian Kosarek, Emily Stuteville and Eleanor Spanhel are to investigate the possiblity of ha y -,ingtheurkyspcad.The are to report to the Board of Trustees on November 20 on their findings.

The Board will decide the route we will take for the party. The eggnog and "Happy Hour" were okayed to precede the supper. A Christmas program, complete with Santa Claus, will be presented by the youth clubs. Any other youth members who have a number to present, may contact sister LaVerne Vanicek and she will put you on the program.

Sister La Verne Vanicek, youth leader, reported 30 juniors, 12 teens, 2 visitors and 2 leaders were present in the youth club meeting. The juniors' November social will be a hayride on Wednesday, November 14th. They will meet at the lodge building at 6 p. m. then proceed on the hayride. The teens also will have a hayride on Saturday, November 17, starting from •the lodge building at 7:30 p. m. Each member may bring one guest. Their charity project will be to be Santa Pals, again, this year.

The youth club members are to bring staple goods to the next meeting on Sunday, December 2nd. Watch for Sister Vanicek's letter for a better explanation on what to bring. I know she stated that only non-perishable items are to be brought.

With the new business came the electiion of the lodge officers for the year 1974. Brother Jerry Mikulas, Jr., chairman of the Nominating Committee presented the slate of oftieers. For president, they presented Brother Leon Zavodny, who was elected by acclamation. For vice president, they presented Brothers Leslie Mesecke, Jerry Pechal and Calvin Skrabanek; Jerry Pechal won by a clear majority. Corresponding secretary is Sister Emily Stuteville. Treasurer elected was Brother Jerry Mi-

7 kulas, Jr. The financial secretary's position had two candidates: Brother Willie E. Kohutek and Sister Ruby L. Bolton; Brother Kohutek was reelected. Parliamentarian elected was Brother Anton Motl. Trustees elected for 2-year terms were Brother Johnnie L. Vanicek and Clarence Sodek.

For the 2-year unexpired term of Brother Jerry Mikutas, Jr., Brother • Emil Hejl was elected. The auditor far a 3-year term will be Brother Anton Vitek.

The youth leader's election was postponed to the next meeting, December 2nd. The English and Czech reporters are to be elected, a.s. are the chairmen. We gave the outgoing officers a round of applause for a job well done. They are Brothers Johnnie L. Vanicek, Clarence Sodek, Frank V. Spanhel and Sister Ruby L. Bolton,.

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE Supreme Lodge Meeting Highlights Dear Members: In this report, I would like to pass on to you my comments on the highlights (results) of the recent Supreme Lodge meeting, held October 9 to 11, and as reported in Brother Mikeska's minutes that appeared in the Vestnik of October 31, 1973.

Referendum Canvass. As can be seen from the minutes, the recent referendum on the hospitalization plan passed by better than three to one margin. We thank the delegates for their consideration of this matter, and we have already proceeded to inaugurate a good hospitalization plan for the employees of the Supreme Lodge, plus the editor. As it turned out, the actual cost will be less than was previously thought and reported to the delegates in their letter with the referendum. We feel we have the best coverage for the money. The carrier is Hartford.

Contributions for Czech Instruction.

We have sent all of the Society's contributions to the various universities, junior college, and high schools that are instructing the Czech language. These include the University of Texas at Austin, Texas A & M University, Temple Junior College, El Campo High School, and Rogers High School. We recently learned that Czech studies have been initiated with the fall semester at Texas Tech, the Czech courses there being there instructed by a Mrs. Vlas:ta Splawn, a native of Czechoslovakia.

RITA KAIVILAS, member of Lodge 130, Dallas, and presently residing near Ennis, performed in the Youth Program at the recent Texas Fraternal Congress in the Sherman Municipal Center. Rita performed the number that won her first place in her age group in individual talent at the State YAD in Taylor.

Texas Fraternal Congress. We were well represented by delegates and talents at this year's TFC in• Sherman. Talent-wise we were very capably represented by Rita Kamas, of Lodge 130 Dallas, who did a tap entitled, "Fifth Tap Spectacular", the same number she performed and won top honors for at the State YAD in Taylor. She represented the SPJST in grand fashion. The duo of Connie Ilrncir and Scott Eliff had to be cancelled att the last minute due to the critical illness of Scoffs father.

(It has since been learned that Mr. Eliff passed away the evening of the youth program, and we extend our

V t STNiK sympathies to Scutt and the other members of the family). We are all proud of Rita's talent and are grateful to her and to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kamas of Ennis, for participating in the youth program at the TFC, representing the SPJST (Rita's picture accompanies this report).

Brother Sablatura Resigns. All of us regret the departure of Brother Paul Sablatura from the Supreme Lodge as the director of District VI. At the same time, we understand the circumstances which prompted him to take this action. Speaking personally, I must say that my association with Brother Sablatura, that the years he served on the Publication Committee and my tenure as editor of the Vestnik, were very cordial and always carried out in true fraternal spirit. It must be said that Brother Sablatura always looked at a situation impartially and objectively and made his decisions and rendered his opinions accordingly. Our best wishes go with him and Sister Sablatura. As I stated lin the recent District VI meeting, we regret Brother Sablatura's departure from the Supreme Lodge, and welcome Brother 1VIatt Vanek into this body.

Youth Department News. Changes in the Youth Department will be presented in the January meeting of the Supreme Lodge, to be effective during the new youth year„ June 1st, One of the changes I will support is a change in the rules allowing a youngster to participate in the district king and queen competition, even if there are no others competing, and then at state. To leave it like it is would be unfair to a youngster who worked and prepared their speech and then went to the District YAD and not be able to go on to State because he had no competition. I was for the present rule when it was adopted a couple of years ago, but experience since then has convinced me that a change back to the old rule would be fairer. The other proposals for changes in the Youth Department will be decided in the January 1974 meeting of the Supreme Lodge.

Miscellaneous: 1974 Calendar. The final proof for our 1974 calendar has been returned to the publisher and we hope to have these calendars in the hands of our members a little earlier than• last year.

9 District Meetings. With the fall Meeting of District VII last Sunday, November 4th, all of the fall district meetings have been held. Generally speaking, the attendance this fall seemed to be somewhat better than last year. although there is always room for improvement. I want to compliment and thank all of the district Officers of the respective districts for their time and efforts in putting together these district meetings.

At the District VII meeting in Robstown on November 4th, it was my privilege to present a check for the face value of the certificate to Sister Agnes Kucera, member of Lodge 56, Corpus Christi, who outlived her certificate. It was a pleasure and an honor getting to know such a grand lady who will soon turn 96 years young. She gets around very well and her mind its very alert.

Sister Kucera was the twenty-third person, in the history of the SPJST, to outlive the actuarial table on her insurance policy. In December another member, this time in District VI, Brother John R. Novosad, will be celebrating his 96th brrthday and a similar presentation will be made to him. We salute these older members, not only for attaining such a ripe old age, but for their past accomplishments and contributions to the growth and foundation of our SPJST. Brotherhood. A recent writer said that Brotherhood is the wisdom of Lincoln, the warmth of Gandhi, the humility of Christ, the humbleness of Mohammed and the humanitarianism of Confucius. It is sitting shoulder to shoulder searching for ways to advance the common good. It is the essense of all wisdom of all ages distilled into a single word-Brotherhood.

It is the understanding of friends and neighbors who sorrow art your misfortunes and rejoice at your thumps and joys. You cannot see brotherhood, neither can you hear it nor taste it but you can feel it a hundred times a day. It is a pat on the back when things look gloomy. It is a smile of encouragement when the way seems hard. It is the helping hand when the burden becomes unbearable.

The destiny of our SPJST is somewhere between the demands for instant solutions and the demands for caption and resistance to change.

SNOOK NO. 9, YOUTH CLUB RODEO The Snook Youth Club is having a stampede and whingding of a rodeo (indoors on November 17, 1973, Saturday night starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Snook Hall, preceded with a basket supper at 6 p.m. All SPJST members are invited to attend an evening of western fun, entertainment and vittles too. Also an award will he given to the best-dressed cowboy and cowgirl. No age limit ... no admission. Just bring your vittles.

Parts will be assigned at the next meeting which will be Sunday, December 2nd; if you are not present, you will be contacted because we would like for all to participate.

If you have something you already know you would like to do, please let Sister Zavodny or me know.

The youth club plans to be a Santa Pal, so remember to bring anything in the line of unperishable groceries to our next meet ing.

The winner of our door prize was Theresa Dobecka. The adult prize winner was Sister Marie Snider.

Our club went to the circus in West on October 27th; it was fun. and the little tots really did enjoy themselves.

We are practicing for our program at the rest home and please try to come to our social nights for rehearsal. The residents at the West Rest Haven always look forward to our visits.

11 of our lodge who collected these cans and have no offspring in our club. We always appreciate their help.

Some new projects were discussed for the coming months. The youth are to bring old games that they may have at home. They will be used as a project.

After the adult meeting, the youth entertained the lodge with games. Our youth would like to thank all of the members for contributing and taking part in these games. The prizes were brought by the youth club members and some of our adult members.

Dear Readers, On October 22 Lodge 84 had their monthly junior youth meeting. We had a nice attendance and discussed old business which was the State Fair, and new business was the Halloween party.

We had the monthly drawing and then refreshments were served. After the meeting we Made craft. We made pot holders out of popcicle sticks, and then glued little pieces of tile to decorate it.

Our Halloween party was on October 31st. It started out with a costume contest. There were vampires, witches, goblins, and more!

After the costume contest, the leaders separated the children by ages. There were two spook rooms: one was a tunnel where you had to crawl over baggies and under water all the time, hearing cries and hanging and other noises; in the second spook room, you were able to see headless horseman looking for his head, and Mr and Mrs. Frankenstein's grave. After the spook rooms we played games and won prizes. Then refreshments were served. We had cookies and

NO. 30, T.AITON Dear Members, The Taiton Youth Club held their monthly meeting on November 5th. Karen Dorotik called. the meeting to order. The pledge was led by Yvonne Krpec and the prayer was led by Karen Kahanek.

Visitors for this month were Kimberly and Carol Denton, Cindy Hallinger, Ann Divin, Mrs. Har y Zboril, Mrs. Rosie Lee Krpec, Miss Mary Mrnustik and Mrs. Stanley Blahs,.

A thank-you note was read from Mr), J.W. Krutilek and the business was discussed.

Our District VI fall meeting. which was held in October, was fairly well attended and booth was successful in selling some items.

Youth Leader Mrs. Krutilek stressed new rules to the members about the district meetings.

The Christmas party is set for December 19 but that is not the definite date as yet. The exchange of gifts was discussed and the majority of members were in favor of it. A price of 1.25 dollar to $1.50 was set for the gift. A program by the. members is planned for entertainment.

A letter was received from Mks. Dorothy Massey stating that our scrapbook which was entered for judging at the Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC) in Sherman, had won second place.

Also Christmas caroling was suggested by the members and everyone seemed to favor this. A "late fo r this will be decided later.

Miss Mary 1Vrrnustik was on" guest speaker and she made a very interestin g talk. She also invited the club members to a covered dish dinner given by the adult lodc,e on December 2nd at noon.

Sister Shriek was born in what is now Czechoslovakia and moved to the Houston area with her parents as a child. She was married to Adolf Shriek in Temple in 1920.

She was employed as a department store clerk for many years. Her husband preceded her in death in 1982. She was a member of Temple Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge No. 4!?.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Janie Pechal of Belton; four nephews, Johnnie, Edwin, and I. J. lVfalcik of Temple and Frank Malcik of Dallas; three nieces, Mrs. Marvin Smetana, Mrs. James Wentrcek of Rogers and Mrs. Joe Kopriva of

Funeral services were Tuesday, October 30 at 10 a.m. at HarperTalasek Funeral Home with the Rev. Albert Michalik and Rev. John Bravenec officiating. Burial followed in the Seaton National Cemetery. Nephews were pallbearers.

Burial was in the Granger Brethren Cemetery.

Prayer services were held Sunday night in the Condra Funeral Chapel in Granger.

Wednesday, November 14, 973 HENRY PREUSS, of 609 Vernon, Taylor, who passed away November 3 in Johns Community Hospital at the age of 71 years.

Brother Preuss was born March 3, 1902 in Elgin and was a retired farmer at the time of his death and was employed by Anderson Plumbing. On November 28, 1923, he was married to Bertha Taylor, who survives. Others surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Marvin Roznovak of Taylor; a son, Eugene Preuss of Sulphur Springs, a foster son and brother, Roy Preuss of Richmond, Virginia; three brothers, Gilbert and 011ie Preuss of Taylor, and Otto Preuss of Pampa; and five sisters, Mrs. Bruce Cherry, Mrs. A. J. Zvonek, Mrs. H. Benad, Mrs. Julius Miksch and Mrs. Tilmori Ponton, all of Taylor.

Funeral services were held at the Condra Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bob Little of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Wallace Snider, Harvey Benad, Clifford and Jimmy Preurss, Ray Ponton, Leon Slagle, and Tilmon Ponton.

WINKLER, SR., a resident of Route 1, Taylor, who passed away on October 31 in an Austin nursing home at the age of 78 years.

Brother Winkler was born in Czechoslovakia on August 31, 1895 and had been brought to the United States when he was three years old. The family settled in Austin County, and Brother Winkler lived in Holland prior to his move to Taylor in 1931.

He was a retired farmer, a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, SPJST and KJT lodges and was a veteran of World War I. In 1920 he married Miss Bertha Kubacak who survives him. Other surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Fred (Angelee) Golk, Mrs. Eugene

Vt STNIK (Martha) Jaecks and Mrs. Billy (Agnes) Turner, all of Taylor, and Mrs. Willie (Patsy) Schlickeisen of Bastrop; a son, Frank J. Winkler, Jr., of Taylor; a sister, Mrs. Joe Dubec, Sr., of Holland; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from St. Mary's Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Officiating were the Rev. Desmond Murphy, the Rev. James Olnhausen, the Rev. James O'Connor and the Rev. Fred Chalupa.

Rosary services were held at Condra Funeral Home in Taylor.

On October 26, 1914 she was married to Mr. Herman Glaser, who survives her. She is also survived by two sons, Albert Glaser, Sr. of Buckholts, and Milton Glaser of Cameron; a daughter. Mrs. Johnnie (Clara) Balusek of Buckholts; two brothers, L.S. Svetlik and L. A. Svetlik of Buckholts, and grandchild, Albert Glaser, Jr. of Buckholts.

Sister Glaser was a charter member of Buckholts Lodge 15, joining the lodge June 9, 1912.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m.

Thursday at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home, Rev. John Baletka and Rev. Ervie Braun officiating.

Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Items of Interest MAIL ORDER COMPLAINTS Numerous complaints have arisen lately concerning mail order purchases, according to one authority.

"Most consumers complain that prepaid merchandise wasn't delivered or refunds not paid on returned. merchandise — although satisfaction is guaranteed," Lynn Bourland, home management specialist, Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System, noted.

If problems arise, consumers can take steps toward solving the problem, she continued.

"First, write the company, addressing the letter to the company president. Or, if worth the expense, call them.

"If the company has an unlisted number, write the postmaster in the city where the company is located, giving the correct name and address.

"Should these actions fail to solve the problem, write the Office of Consumer Affairs, U.S. Postal Service, Washington, D.C. 20260; the Direct Mail Advertising Association, 230 Park Ave., New York, N.Y. 10017; or any consumer protection agency in your city.

"Or, write the consumer column of a local newspaper.

"Whatever method, provide as much information as possible about your problem and the company."

Before making Christmas mail order purchases, consider the following questions, Miss Bourland advised.

—Does the company offer a money-back gutaxantee?

—What are the conditions of the guarantee?

—Does the offer seem too good to be true?

—Has an acquaintance received satisfactory service from this company?

—What information does the Better Business) Bureau have on the company?

When making a mail order purchase, pay by check or money order, the specialist emphasized.

"Also keep a copy of the order form — even if you must pay to have a copy made. In addition, keep the company's catolog or advertisement," she suggested.

A dirty filter may restrict the air flow to such an extent as to prevent proper heating of the `house. Restricted air flow may also cause an overheated furnace, espe'cially the high temperature limit control should fail to operate.

"On most furnaces the filter can `be easily removed, and replaced," says Allen. "If you don't know the size filter to purchase, remove the old one and examine it. The size should be marked, on it."

After removing the filter the engineer suggests using the hose attachment of a vacuum cleaner to remove any accumulation of lint and dust in the blower section of the furnace.

Allen adds that the belt on the -'furnace blower should be examined -`and replaced if it is cracked or shows signs of wear.

"Most fans and fan motors should be oiled, about once or twice a year," Allen points out.

"Add enough oil to oil holes to fill the cup or opening without overflowing." ' A lightweight automobile engine oil, is satisfactory unless a particular oil is specified in your instruction manual, adds the engineer.

HUNTERS CAUTIONED AGAINST SHOOTING BLACK-BELLIED TREE DUCKS AUSTIN — As the November 10 duck season drew near hunters were urged to do a little homework on duck identification.

It might mean the difference bet v‘reen a full mor n i n g of shooting 10-point teal or a shot at a 70-point mallard hen and one other species.

It might also mean the difference of being cited by game war-

A small population of black-bellied tree ducks in the Lake Somerville area of Burleson, Lee and Washington Counties was illegally — and probably unwittingly — shot at last year with some of the ducks billed. ' Most hunters are probably un familiar with the duck since it is not common to the area.

1972 was the first year that the ducks had been observed in the Lake Somerville area. They are apparently extending their range from usual breeding areas in So. Texas and the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

The black-bellied tree duck has a low, slow flight and makes a squealing whistle.

Best field marks are the black underparts and large white areas on the wings.

The bill is red, yellow and blue and the feet are pink. Females are usually duller.

It frequently perches intrees and sometimes nests in holes in the trunk or forks in ranches.

Black-bellied and fulvous tree ducks are both closed to hunting.

Only the wood duck of these woodland inhabitants, a 70-point bird, may be hunted.

-SPJSTFOWL CHOLERA FOUND IN COASTAL, PANHANDLE WATERFOWL. AUSTIN — Positive identification of "duck cholera" has been made in some 1,000 water birds found dead in Wharton County last week, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

White-fronted geese (speeklebellies) ; ducks including shovelers. baldplates, gadwalls, blue-winged and green winged teal, and shorebirds species of dowitchers and avocets were found dead October in a rice field.

Now, another 2,000 waterfowl have been found dead around the playa lakes in the Panhandle's Par mer County.

It too has been tentatively diagnosed by pathologists at Texas A8z1Vf University as pasteurella multocida, or fowl cholera.

Dr. R.M. Robinson of the. university's Department of Veterinary Pathology expressed hope that the

Prior to positive identification of fowl cholera in the coastal birds, Dr. Robinson had ruled out bo4u1ism, a more familiarly known disease of fowl, by checking live birds from the stricken group. He also dismissed lead poisining as the birds were fat and in good physical condition. Symptoms of all three disease are similar.

Pasteurellosis is an acute illness caused by a tiny bacterium which kills quickly.

It is similar to "shipping fever" in cattle. The fowl cholera is transmitted animal-to-animal and may occur in wetlands where large concentrations of water birds are congested.

The Texas duck season opened in the High Plains Mallard Management Unit October 25 and goose season October 29. Duck season will open in the remainder of the state on November 10.

Al Springs, chief of the Parks and Wildlife Department's wildlife branch said that the two outbreaks should have little effect on the hunting seasons.

"Actually", said Springs, "hunting pressure should work to the birds' advantage since it will break up large concentrations and possibly prevent further occurrences of cholera."

Parks and Wildlife Department officials pointed out there was no need for alarm, either for human or avian welfare. Persons with cuts on hands or fingers are liable to suf fer painful localized infection only by actually handling birds with fowl cholera.

A good rule for hunters is to leave any sick •or weak ducks and geese encountered. If they are flying and healthy they are not infected and thus safe to harvest for the table during oven season.

One day you receive a check from him for $200. On the back he has written the words: "Payment In Full."

Should you cash the check and take a chance on collecting the extra $100 later on? It is tempting to do just that.

The trouble is that if you cash the check as is, the law will probably consider the whole debt wiped out. The debtor has made you a legal offer to settle up for a total of $200. By cashing the check you are accepting his offer and agreeing to a final settlement at that figure.

VESTNIK True, with the $200 check in your hands , you might be reluctant indeed to let it go. One man in this predicament tried to steer a middle course. He errased the word "FULL" and substituted the word "PART", then cashed the check.

However, his strategy did not work. A court held later that he had no claim to any more money.

The court said he had no authority, on his own, to alter the terms of the defendant's offer. .Another man tried something else. He too cashed a PAYMENT IN FULL check, but at the same time wrote the debtor that he simply was not accepting it as a full settlement.

But again, a court ruled that the entire debt was wiped out. The court said the man's actions in cashing the check spoke louder than his words of disavowal.

Even if you don't cash the check but merely hang onto it, you might be held to have accepted the debtor's offer. Silence can mean consent.
