NOTICE DISTRICT VII MEETING

Dear Members: Just a reminder that the fall meeting will he held at Robstown on Sunday, November 4th; also, at this meeting, there will be a spe. cial occasion to fill the afternoon program, Sister Agnes Kucera, age 96, out lived her certificate; she is a member of Lodge No. 56. Corpus Christi. During this opportunity, Lodge 56, will pay homage and will donate a corsage and birthday cake to her. SL President Brother Nick Morris will be at this meeting for the presentation honoring Sister Kucera, with the check for the full face value of $1,000.

Sister Agnes Kucera was born November 15, 1877 at Bordovice, County Mistek, Moravia, now Czech oslovakia; she arrived at Galveston in 1898 with her parents John and Johana Sykora who made their home at Fayetteville, Texas.

Sister Kucera had seven brothers and three sisters; presently she is the only one living. In 1906 she married Karel Kueera who was born in Texas; he passed away in 1947. Survivors are four sons: William, Karel, Edward and Albin; two daughters, Mrs. Henrietta Pavelka, Mrs. Janice M. Diabaja; 28 grandchildren; and 25 great-grand children. Sister Kucera joined SPJ ST on May 14, 1916 at the age of 39, and she later transferred to Lodge 56. Our lodge is wishing her good health so she can celebrate her 100th birthday.

UNCORRECTED MINUTES OF DISTRICT VII SPRING MEETLNG District VII spring meeting was held on April 29, 1973 hosted by Lodge No. 107, Rozkvet Zapadu, Floresville, The meeting was called to order

by Brother Bob Bayer at 11:45 a.m.

Brother Bayer welcomed all present and wished all a joyous day.

District President Brother Frank C. Sacky then was asked to continue with the meeting. Scott Eliff, flag bearer, presented the colors and led the entire memberShip in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

The members stood in silent tribute to departed members. Roll call of district officers revealed that all were present. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.

District Treasurer Brother Alvin Hrna presented this report: Youth Fund — $213.52; General Fund — $249.19.

District Sales Representative Sister Tillie Valchar reported that she enjoys working as a district, sales representative and gave the following report: $77,800 of insurance sold to 41 members, and that the district is way below the quota for the year; the district has a $525,000 quota to meet. Top salesman in 1972 was Brother Frank C. Sacky (79) for 135 consecutive months, Sister Helen Pavelka (117) for R3 consecutive months. For the year 1972. District VII met its (mote, with 189 members and $425.000 of insurance sold.

Rest Home Director Brother Eugreetings gene Hrneir extended from Lodg e No. 117. Robstown. stated that the Supreme Lodge is doing: a good job and that the rest homes are in good financial condition. Donations to rest homes arc always appreciated.

District Youth Counselor Maxine Pavliska reported that the youth year begins on July 1st; she explained to the membership thet the youth clubs of the district have their booths set up as a money making project, se do support them. The coming events are camp at Christine: District YAP in Robs town en July 29 and State YAD. Brother Bob Bayer at this time, recognized Brother Leonard Mikeska, Sister Dorothy Massey, and Brother Sid Pokladnik and wife Justine. At 12:15 p.m. meeting convened and will continue at 1:30 p.m.

The meeting reconvened at 1:30 p.m. Roll call of lodges revealed Lodges 56, 79, 107, 117, 133, 137, 147 and 161, were represented.

SL Secretary-Treasurer Brother Leonard Mikeska conveyed greetings from the Supreme Lodge and stated that Brothers Hejny and Morris are attending other functions concerning the SPJST. He introduced Bro. Pete Vakha,r, District VII Director and that he is a good worker 'and represents the district very well. Brother Mikeska presented checks to the district: $150 to the General Fund and $500 to the Youth Fund (according to Article 53 of the By-laws).

Brother Sid Pokladnik, District III Director spoke at this time and explained that $70,000 can be loaned to lodges that wish to build lodge halls. Everyone at the Supreme Lodge works hard and no loafing; he explained that the State Board of Insurance oversees the directors. A great step was taken when the Society combined the two officers (secretary and treasurer) of the Supreme Lodge.

Brother Sefcik spoke to the audience and told them that mail service is slow and that anyone who writes to the Vestnik, mail early so that the material gets printed in the issue and date for which it Was intended.

Brother Frank Sacky announced that he would not accept any nomination for district office; he thanked the membership for their trust in him in serving as president of District VII. Motion was made and seconded that officers be elected by accla =ton. The following officers were elected: President: Bro. Bob Bayer (107) 1st Vice Pres.: Sis. Viola Cabla (117) 2nd Vice Pres.: Bro. Program was presented by the youth of Lodges 107 and 117.

He then welcomed our guests, Mrs. Frank Girard, Mr. and Mrs. John Kofnovec and son, Mrs. Ella Breitkreutz, Dick Yarborough, Ernest Clemmons, and Mrs. Polly Vicha.

Secretary Albert Banik read the previous meeting minutes and they were approved as read. He also read a thank-you note from Marvin Camp.

Youth Leader Rosemarie Banik then reported on State YAD and the youth meeting at the District III meeting. Treasurer Henry Breitkreutz gave his usual good report and the body approved his purchases of supplies.

All chairmen gave their reports and thanked all for helping at the Saturday night dances. Albert Ban ik thanked all who helped with the church picnic.

A walk-in vault was approved by the members, and Ernest Banik was asked to see to the details of the installation.

Our Christmas party was discussed and the Entertainment Committee is to be in charge of all the arrangements.

Vice President Vernon Wood thanked the membership for the flowers sent him while he was in the hospital.

Margaret Rauschuiber was accepted as a new member. We hope she enjoys beinig among us.

Birthdays in October were Eddie Banik, Honey Brown, Mary Beralek, Vernon Dulock, and. Debbie Dulock. Adult door prize was won by Jewel York, and Eddie Banik was youth prize winner.

5 per was enjoyed by all, everyone joined in playing a game. There were quite a few lucky and happy winners. (I might add that yours truly was one of those).

We surely thank the Entertainment Committee, Dorothy Banik and Marvin Camp for the entertainment, and also William Rauschuber for helping them out.

This is all for now, but remember our next lodge meeting is November 11th, and election of officers, so do try and be there.

LODGE NO. 173, GALVESTON Dear Members and Friends: Our November meeting will be moved up one week to the first Sunday, November 4th, instead of the second Sunday, due to a conflict in dates.

The December meeting and Annual Christmas Party is scheduled for December 2nd. Election of officers for 1974 will be held at that time, so now is the time for you to offer the name of any member you wish to hold any particular office.

Sister Audrey Kaluza and her Entertainment Committee are working on plans for the Christmas Party. All members attending are to bring a covered dish and, if guests are invited, to bring enough food for them. The evening should be most enjoyable and everyone is urged to attend and take part.

It is with regret that we report the passing away of Brother John Kopecky on September 10, 1973.

Bro. Kopecky was a member for 34 years. To his wife Helen and his family, we offer our deepest sympathy.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members, The annual Czech Day was a great success and was enjoyed by many guests. Compliments go to Lodge 88 Pres. Ernest Hanka, chair man of the Dedication Program, and to First Vice President Jeannette Walkoviak, chairman of the radio broadcast.

The KFRD radio broadcast of the American Czech Hour from

our Chandelier Ballroom was emceed by Mr. Joe Gavranovic and Jeannette. The beautiful songs by our Choral Club and the good music of Clarence Baca were thoroughly enjoyed by all.

I had the pleasure of presenting our lovely Queen Lynn Wahl-berg, King Lin Lesak, and the Duchess and Duke, Margie and Ronnie Barcak. After stating how proud they were of our great Czech heritage, the queen and king presented President Hanka, es corted by Princess Kim Perry. 1st Vice President Walkoviak, escorted

by Prince John Broz. and Speaker Rudy Sefcik, escorted by Jode Elzner. Robert Knapick and Robert Fluellen presented colors and led us in the pledge of allegiance.

Fred Buri, accompanied by Naomi Kostom, gave beautiful renditions of "The Star Spangled Banner" and "Kde domov mar.

President Hanka welcomed the guests and Jeannette read, beautifully, the Mayor's Proclamation designating October 21st as Czech Day in Houston. The chief speaker for the day was Editor Rudy Sefcik, selected and presented by Pres ident Hanka. Editor Sefcik gave an informative talk about the history of Czechoslovakia. He also spoke of our lodge, naming many memers instrumental in its formation and growth.

May I take this time to thank each and everyone who helped with our District V fall meeting.

All donations were appreciated. I will not name anyone doing this or that, because I would he sure to overlook someone and, that. I do not want to do. It was great to see our youth members turn out as they did.

We celebrated three birthdays Saturday night: Sister Malek, our guide, Larry Hosea, and Richard Malek. Brother and Sister Kendall also had an anniversary. We are proud to know we have a Naval Sea Cadet in our youth club; he is Larry Hosea, son of Sister Pearlie Ordener.

Members, remember, if you have any children who are not attend-• ing our youth meetings, you are letting them down. We have a gogetter for a youth leader, Brother Dan Berry and his wife, Liz, is right there also. Some of you mem bers may think I speak too much about our youth members, but they are too dear to not try and get them involved in our youth clubs; we not only teach them but they can also teach us.

They said they really enjoyed! it and were happy they came. Also Skip Pelz from Baltimore, Md. Benny and I got to visit with our relatives, the Bedrich Pavliceks and family, from Bomarton) and friends from Seymour and Megazgel. For those of you who missed it, you lost out on a wonderful day. Frank Prochaska and all his co-workers did a wonderful job.

Sister Anna Milan has as her guest her sister, Frantiska Vitov ski from Czechoslovakia who is visiting all her relatives. She also enjoyed the festival and seeing people who had visited her while they were in Europe. Her first trip back to the United States in 53 years, and she is enjoying every minute of it.

We are all saddened by the sudden, death of Brother Arthur Vitasek, and express our sincere sympathy to his wife, Lillian, and all the family.

If all goes well I plan on leaving Friday for St. Louis to visit my brother and sister and her family, so remember that the Friendship Club in November, will meet on Thursday, the 8th, at Lodge 92, with the Ladies Circle at 10:30 a.m.

Our lodge meeting will be Sunday, November 11th, at 3 p.m.

Wednesday, October 31, 1973 HULHANEK REUNION Approximately 250 relatives gathered at the Chamber of Commerce Hall, Ellinger, Texas, on Sun day, October 21, 1973, for the Third Kulhanek Reunion. This year's get together was saddened by the recent death of one of the relatives.

All present enjoyed the day talking making acquaintances, some played cards and dominoes while others listened or danced to the fine music furnished by the Janish boys. A basket lunch was served for dinner and supper.

By special request, old family pictures were again on display.

The business meeting was opened with a short prayer and then a moment of silence in memory of the deceased relatives.

The next reunion will be held again at the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce Hall and on the third Sunday of next October.

The following officers were reelected: President: Albert Kulhanek Vice-Pres.: Leopold Kulhanek, Vie for Dvorak, Laura Baca Secretary: Leonard Kulhanek Treasurer: Justin Kubicek.

New officers elected were Vice-Presidents: Gladys Stolle, Peter Janish and Gene Kulhanek.

The oldest relative present was Lawrence Kulhanek of Fayetteville, 86 years old, and the youngest was Patricia Ann Dvorak, 6 weeks young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Dvorak of Frelsburg. The longest married couple were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Kulhanek, 58 years, and the most recently married couple were Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Kubicek, also of Fayetteville.

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS SPJST SOFTBALL TEAM Dear Brothers and Sisters: The annual team steak dinner and awards night was held on Sunday afternoon, September 23, beginning at 4 p.m. and concluded at 9:30 p.m. The dinner was held at the home of Ida and Lionel Schulz in their beautiful spacious backyard. A total of 46 people were present and• only one player and his wife were unable to attend due

VESTNiK to illness ha the immediate family; also our lodge President Brother Adolph Salac and his lovely wife, Evelyn, were unable to attend because they left on that particular Sunday morning for a two-week trip to Czechoslovakia; District III Director Sid Poldadnik and his lovely wife, Justine, could not attend because they had to be in New Orleans on this particular date; and, may we say, we are sorry you all were unable to attend because we all missed you immensely.

The guest speaker was Mr. Bill Harbour from the City of Dallas, a director of the Dallas Parks and Recreation Department. We all enjoyed his short and interesting talk and we were certainly honored to have Mr. Harbour and his wife spend the evening with us. Brief comments were made by the officers of the lodge and guests, including yours truly.

The steaks were no bull, and we have Brother Willie and Sister Carlyn Ondrusek to thank for furnishing those delicious and precious steaks; in fact, they were just scrumptious.

We wish to extend our thanks and appreciation to Willie and Carlyn, also for all the other goodies "ole" September Santa gave to the team and guests; you are the most wonderful people ever, and I am saying this for the whole team.

Thanks again for everything, we enjoyed it tremendously, which includes the keg of beverages.

The team batting champ for the 1973 season was Connie Brennan, with a gaudy .380 batting average and he had some stiff competition from several of his team mates.

The most valuable player award was won by two players this season determined by the vote of the team members. Trophies were presented to Lionel Schulz and Jim Scroggins, both star pitchers, and both were most •deserving of the award. Our most sincere congratulations to Connie, Lionel and Jim and we hope you will all have great seasons again next, year.

We wish to thank Ida and Lionel Schulz for the use of their spacious backyard; it was a perfect setting for our dinner. Also I wish to thank our mother lodge for letting us use tables and chairs for the party and also my thanks to Bina Vrana, Lionel Schulz, Jeff Burton and Wiley Beeslely, for

9 helping transport these articles and our thanks to Paul Valenta and Leo Kopecky for the use of their grills, and to Jerome Rejcek for the use of the trailer.

This year our head chef was Leo Kopecky who did an outstanding jab in cooking the steaks as ordered; our deepest thanks for your efforts and we are most thankful for your taking the time to help the team on this occasion.

May I thank the team members and their wives for the gift you gave me, it is something I really needed and can use, perhaps I'll cool a few pivos in it for the team next season. Also, my wife Lil, wishes to thank you for the moneystocking purse you gave her. Now she can keep up with her pennies at next year's "girls' party" which the players' wives enjoy so much when they are hosted by Sister Justine Pokladnik during each season; they all have such a wonderful time and I know they look forward to the weekend that they spend together.

I hope that I have not overlooked anyone who had anything to do with our awards dinner; if I have, it certainly wasn't intentional. We do wish to thank our mother lodge for letting us have a team and for their assistance and also our thanks to the team sponsors for their assistance and also our thanks to the team sponsors for their contribution. Without everyone's help and assistance, we could not have had such a successful season.

My personal thanks to the players for your efforts: two league championships, two trophies and another large trophy for finishing second in the Dallas City Metro Championship Playoffs; you made me look good as your manager. I am proud of your accomplishments because you did this through team efforts and full cooperation and I am looking forward to next season as your manager.

In conclusion, my thanks to AIbina Vrana and Paul Valenta, my assistants, and to Wiley Beesley, team captain. It has been a most rewarding year!

10 LADIES' CIRCLE LODGE NO!. 92, FORT WORTH The next meeting of the Ladies' Circle will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 8, at the National Hall. It will be a joint meeting with the Friendship Club of Lodge No. 154. A turkey, with all the trim mings, has been planned for this occasion. Any member who has not been contacted concerning what food they are to bring is asked to bring pastry.

The Ladies' Circle "0eskk Obchod" booth at the Polka Festival October 21st was a complete sellout and a financial s u c c e s s.

Thanks go to all those ladies who donated so generously their time and talent to this event. Financial reports will be presented at the next meeting regarding the outcome of this activity.

The quilt was won by Elizabeth Mocek of Fort Worth.

The Festival itself was a day of enjoyment. The weather was beautiful, the music good, the food delicious and many old friendships were renewed. It was apparent that much hard work had gone into the planning of this first-time event in Ft. Worth. We are looking forward to next year.

The weather was not so beautiful for the last meeting of the Circle in October. A near flood and high water kept many members from attending.

President Lillie McMillan called the meeting to order. Billie Spindor read the minutes for Secretary Florence Greer who was in Las Vegas attending a convention with her husband. It was read into the minutes that the gavel used by the late Mary Paprskar has been donated to the Ladies Circle by Vic for Murphy for use by the current and future presidents. Thank you, Mrs. Murphy.

Other business included pricing of items donated to the "t`ieskji Obchod." A special thank you was noted for Mrs. Agnes Burges donation of a pair of hand-tooled slippers sent from Corpus Christi.

Recognized for October birthdays were Millie Wruble and Mary Saldana. Billie Spindor won the door price. A covered dish lunch followed the meeting.

EXCERPTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE FOURTH REGULAR QUARTERLY MEETING OF THE SUPREME LODGE SPJST HELD OCTOBER 9, 20 and 11, 1973.

The meeting was called to order on October 9, 1973 at 9 a.m.

It was agreed to devise an index for the Supreme Lodge minutes back to the year 1969. Seconded and cart ied.

It was agreed that the secretarytreasurer be in charge of setting up the index for the minutes and that he have authority to get assistance from the directors or other wise. Seconded and carried.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska presented the unopened ballots of the referendum sent out on August 10, 1973, concerning the group hospitalization proposal for Supreme Lodge officers, employees and the editor. The ballots were opened and tabulated by the members of the Supreme Lodge.

The results of the referendum are as follows: 18, 469 — votes for 5, 666 — votes against 24, 135 — votes were cast 4 ballots were voided because they were postmarked after the deadline.

5 ballots were voided because they Were not signed.

43 delegates did not return their ballots.

Several notes received with the ballots were read.

Sec.-Treasurer Mikeska summarized several hospitalization propos als from different companies.

On a motion, seconded and carried, it was decided that the Supreme Lodge officers have the authority to choose the best group hospitalization plan and that they stay reasonably near the cost estimate given to the delegates with

the ballots and that the chosen plan be put into effect as soon as feasible.

The district sales representatives appeared before the Supreme Lodge per decision in the January, 1973 Supreme Lodge meeting. All aistrict sales representatives were present and Brother Silas Smith, the state field manager, was also present.

President Morris turned the meeting over to Vice President Hejny to lead the discussion. Vice President Hejny pointed out that one of the reasons for meeting with the district sales representatives was to consider the proposals made by them to the Supreme Lodge and that the decisions made would be thoroughly discussed and in the best interests of the Society.

The proposals made by the district sales representatives in their meeting of September 29, 1973 were then discussed by the body and various ideas were exchanged.

President Morris said he enjoyed the dialogue between the 7 district sales representatiVes and members of the Supreme Lodge and said that this was the proper forum for open discussion and that sometimes these things are difficult to discuss in district meetin gs. He went on to say that if some of the recommendations are not accepted by the Supreme Lodge, that he hopes that fact would be accept ed in the proper fraternal spirit.

Several of the district sales representatives thanked the Supreme Lodge for the opportunity to meet with the Supreme Lodge and said they felt this would serve to promote better relations between the district sales representatives and the Supreme Lodge.

After all discussion was completed, action was then taken on the district sales representatives' proposals.

A motion was made, that the proposals as amended be accepted. Seconded and carried.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:15 p.m. and the meeting reconvened at 9 a.m. October 10, 1973.

RE! President Morris' Report President Morris reported on the following: A trip to Dime Box Lodge No. 13 to help settle some problems in the lodge on July 15, 1973 and to Camp Val Verde to visit the camps

on August 3, 1973 and that he plans tc attend the KJT building dedication on October 14, 1973, followed by another trip to the Dime Box lodge, on invitation.

Letters read: a letter of acknowledgement from Mr. George E. Thigpen, super intendent of the El Campo Indepen dent School District, thanking the Supreme Lodge for the $100.00 contribution for teaching the Czech language; a letter from Dr. Marvin R. Felder of Temple Junior College thank ing the Supreme Lodge for the $100 dorgation for teaching the Czech language; a letter from Mr. Wayne Cornelius, superintendent of the Rogers Independent School District, advising us that the Czech Ian guage would again be taught. President Morris stated that the donations of $100 has been sent; a letter from Henry J. Skrabanek of Haughton Bros. Printers announcing their move to a new building and location.

Honorary President Edward L. Marek arrived and visited the Supreme Lodge meeting.

SPJST Ritual And Handbook — Content suggestions for an SPJST Ritual and Handbook were reviewed and discussed at length and a number of changes were made by the Supreme Lodge members.

A motion was made that the pro posed ritual and handbook be approved with the changes made during this meeting. Seconded and car vied.

A motion was made to print approximately 1.500 copies of the ritual and handbook. Seconded and carried.

A motion was made and seconded that the new ritual and handbook be the same size as the old ritual book. Motion passed.

A motion was made and seconded that the officers have the author ity to have the ritual and handbook printed. Motion passed.

Vacation for Editor — The possibility of doing something to help the editor find a way he could take a vacation was brought up.

The consensus of opinion was that the Supreme Lodge did not have authority to act on this matter.

At this time President Morris deferred the balance of his report, and Mr. and Mrs. I,inn Pescaia of

11 the Cechoslovak Publishing Company met with the Supreme Lodge to negotiate on the cost of printing the Vestnik for 1974. According to the bid to the convention, and the contract, the cost is to be ascertained according to the increase based on the U.S. Cost of Living Index. A letter was read from the U.S. Department of Labor stating the increase for 1973 in the Consumer Prize Index as 5.8 percent through August • f 1973.

Based on the Index the increase in cost of the Vestnik would be .203 cents per annum per subscriber and this would increase the cost of the Vestnik from 3.50 to 3.703 per annum per subscriber.

The slight reduction in size of the print of the Vestnik by the new offset process was discussed with Mr. Pescaia. It was suggested that the size of the print be the same as the original size to make the Vestnik easier to read.

Mr. Pescaia offered a solution to the problem and could restore the Vestnik print to the original size, but that about two spaces per line would be lost; however, this solution was agreeable, as far as the Supreme Lodge was concerned.

Editor Rudy Sefcik arrived and was welcomed to the meeting.

The Vestnik contract was considered. A motion was passed that in accordance with the 5.8 percent increase in the cost of Living Index, the cost of . Vestnik be increased to $3.703 per year per copy for the year 1974, so as to conform with the existing contract with the Cechoslovak Publishing Company.

Youth Program Representatives At The Texas Fraternal Congress Scott Eliff and Connie Hrxicir will present two numbers as a duo, Scott Eliff will present a solo, and Rita Karnes will present one number at the Texas Fraternal Congress Youth Program in Sherman on October 20, 1973, representing the SPJST. Workshops For Local Lodge Officers — He called attention to a decision in the July 7-8, 1971 meeting to have workshops to help local lodge officers conduct meetings and carry on local lodge business.

A proposal on the workshops was presented.

A motion to authorize the Supreme Lod ge officers to make preparations for holding the workshops as outlined in the proposal presented was made. Seconded and carried.

Suggestions made by President Morris and the District Youth Counselors in their fall meeting were referred to. These proposals concerning the Youth Department were tabled until the January 1974 Supreme Lodge meeting.

Director Valchar read a letter from Lodge 107, signed by 28 members supporting a change in the rule prohibiting a child from participating in a district king and queen contest if there are no other; in competition. The matter was tabled until the January 1974 Supreme Lodge meeting when changes in the youth rules will be considered.

Retired Secretary Raymond Urbanovsky sent his greetings by phone and said he would be out of town and thus could not visit the meeting.

Wednesday, Oct. 31, 1973 which was to be held Friday, October 26, at 8 p.m.

On October 14th, the youth club toured Six Flags Over Texas which included a delicious picnic lunch at the park; they all had a lot of fun including us adults. I want to thank all the parents for taking your cars; it was appreciated very much.

I forgot to mention those who went to State YAD to Taylor. They were: President Brother Johnnie Krizan, Sister Ruth Krizan, Gary Marek, and Alton Stuckly. I am sorry that I overlooked these members' names in my letter.

During our last meeting we had a poster contest on Fire Prevention. The winners were David Dobecka, 1st; Eddie Hykel, 2nd; Joyce Waschmann, 3rd; and the judges were Brother Fred Monthie, Brother Frank Schroeder and Sister Ruthie Schuetz. Thank you for judging the contest.

At our next meeting on November 4, the youth club will have their meeting before the mother lodge meeting, so try to be at the meeting at 4 p.m.; also we will have a guest speaker and, after supper, we will have a game night, so come out and help the youth club.

Christmas is around the corner and we need to start planning our Christmas program; all of you youth club members be at our next meeting, so we know who to put in the program.

Dear Members: We had our meeting Thursday, October 4th, at 8 p.m. Our president called the meeting to order; we had roll call then the treasurer gave her report. Then the minutes were read. Mrs. Knapick asked if we would like to have a Tupperware party to make money for our club.

She then passed out books so we could sell the products in advance.

The party will be on Tuesday, November 6, so try to bring your mother and friends so we can make more money and have' more parties.

Our meeting was adjourned, and Mrs. Hegwood had us practice our song "Everything Is Beautiful" for the District V meeting. Thanks to Mrs. Hegwood and. Lin Lesak — Mrs. Hegwood taught us how to sing, and Lin helped us sing — if it were not for them, we would not have made it, Lin really helped.

And everything turned out real good at District V. Don't forget our spook party on October 31st. See you then!

For our performance we acted out two skits entitled "But Grampa" and "Just a Howel." We sang "Louka Zelena," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and "Pretty Dancing Girl." We sold all sorts of different items such as soap dishes

HESS, of Temple, who passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 17, 1973 in a Temple nursing home after a long illness. Brother Hess was 81 years old.

Brother Hess was born in Bastrop County, the son of Rhinehardt and Rosie Hess. He moved to Temple in 1915 when he was married to Miss Olga Rinn of Temple.

They lived in the Airville community where he operated a blacksmith shop and farmed. He also operated a blacksmith shop in the Oenavifle community for many years. They moved to Temple six years ago when he retired from farming. He joined the SPJST on August 4, 1941.

Surviving are his wife; three brothers, Rhinehardt Hess of Temple, Frank Hess of Gatesville and Antone Hess of Gonzales; two sisters, Mrs. Polite Zitterman of Waelder and Mrs. Annie Zitterman of Austin, and several nieces and nephews in the Temple area.

She was born August 30, 1904 near Ennis, the daughter of Anton and Barbara Cvach Trojacek. On November 19, 1922, she was married to Josef F. Haskovec, and they lived near Ennis until 1968, where Mr. Haskovec was engaged in farming.

They have been residents of Ennis since 1968. Mrs. Haskovec was a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 25.

Surviving are her husband, two sons, Joe G. Haskovec, Dickenson, Texas, Edwin A. Haskovec, Ennis; two daughters, Mrs. Elick Blazek, Ennis, and Mrs Emil Gerich, Houston; twenty grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, George Trojacek, Ennis; three sisters, Mrs. Edwin Nesuda, and Mrs. Frank A. Laznovsky, Ennis; Mrs. Joe B. Hejny, Temple.

Sister Kocurek is survived by her husband, Willie J. Kocurek of Guy; one daughter, Mrs. Elsie Reve of Smithville; two sons, Freddie of Rosenberg, and Edmond of Pleak; three brothers, John, Henry, and Robert, all of La Salle; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Vallet of Rosenberg, and Mrs. Millie Hoffman of Waco; and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The problem is compounded by a shortage of qualified language teachers, the Rockdale legislator said.

Oct. 19, 1973 San Marcos — Rep. Dan Kubiak, chairman of the House Education Committee, Friday called for a new state policy and more state money to replace rapidly disappearing federal aid to foreign language education.

In remarks prepared for delivery to the Texas Society of Foreign Language Teachers, Kubiak warned that Texas in on the brink of losing momentum gained in foreign language education during the 1960's.

This is true, he said, because foreign languages usually are nonrequired courses in public schools and therefore- are most vulnerable

PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS NOS. 8 AND 9 Proposed, Constitutional Amendment No. 8, which authorizes and requires incorporated cities and towns to levy ad valorem taxes sufficient to pay the principal and interest on their general obligations.

Arguments For: The proposed amendment would allow cities to live up to their contractual obligations on bonds without depleting funds for other sources, such as

18 operating expenses. It would also allow more flexibility on total tax rates, enabling cities to become more desirable contracting partners. The new law would allow those cities which need additional services to incur additional obligations.

Arguments Against: The proposed amendment creates the possibility of placing more taxes on an already overburdened taxpayer. Some say it is unnecessary to deviate from a system which has worked for many years. Opponents also feel the rate limitation for general obligations of cities should remain a constitutional limitation rather than a statutory one which is more easily changed. (Under the present constitution cities of 5,000 or less may levy ad valorem taxes for authorized purposes at a rate not more than 1 1/2 per cent of the value of taxable property and cities of over 5,000 in population may levy taxes at a rate not to exceed 21/2 per cent of the value of taxable Property in the city).

Proposed Constitutional( Amendment No. 9 would authorize the legislature to exempt some nonprofit water supply corporations and cooperatives from property tax on certain facilities.

Several attempts have been made in the past to exempt water supply corporations from property taxes, but our constitution requires that tax exemptions be specified within the constitution and a similar proposed amendment failed approval by the voters in 1969.

Arguments For: Proponents of the amendment feel non-profit water supply corporations perform a vital function in many parts of the state that might not otherwise have adequate water supplies. The amendment would encourage the formation of such cooperatives and help development of water resources. Similar public utilities are tax exempt.

Arguments Against: bpponents feel the passage of the amendment would give non-profit corporations a competitive advantage over many privately owned and profit-baking Water supply corporations. It was only four years ago the voters rejected 4 similar amendment and there has been no significant change since that time.

What's it all about? It's the Preschool Immunization Program of the Texas State Department of Health and your local health department.

Each month, the Pre-school Immunization Program receives a report from the State Health Department's Records and Statistics Section, listinig the name, parents" name, and home address of every baby born in Texas. When a child reaches the age of four months, the Health Department sends a printed card to the parents, asking whether the child has received the first series of immunizations against preventable disease. Normally, every child should be given a series of vaccinations against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, and rubella, beginning no later than three months of age and ending at about eighteen months of age. If the• parents 'don't return the postage-free reply card, a reminder letter is sent. If the parents still don't respond, a referral is made to one of the 80 Community Immunization Service Aides or local health departments located in every part of the state. The aides' job is to find out whether the child has been immunized, and if not, to encourage the parents to begin the immunizations as soon as they can.

The aides begin by making a search of the local health department's records. If the child has ever visited a public health clinic, there's a record on file. If there is no such record, the aide tries to contact the parents by telephone.

If this, too, fails, the aide schedules a home visit.

Most of the aides' day is spent making home visits — or, at least, trying to make them. It's a tedious and frustrating job. The aide may stop at 20 or 25 homes in a day, and there may be no one home at any of them. It's not unusual for the aide to come back to the house two or three times before she can find and talk to the parents.

When she does find someone home, the visit usually lasts only a few minutes. Most parents appreciate the service that the aides provide. In fact, in many cases the

One aide told us, "You're there for immunization, but sometimes they have other problems and you refer them to different places to get help. You are not just an immunization aide, you become a jackof-all-trades." Or, as the supervisor of the aides for a seven-county region said, "The aides become an extension of the public health nurse."

The hardest problem for the aide to handle is the parent who refuses to have a child immunized. According to one aide, "Too many parents don't realize that they are saving themselves a lot of trouble if they start him out at the time suggested by the State Health Department.

Then by the time he's ready to go to school, he's through with everything. But you'd be surprised at the number of children that are not immunized. A lot of parents can't afford a private physician, and maybe they don't know about the services offered free of charge by their local health department.

Maybe they don't even know that the children need to be immunized."

One aide told us that she visited the same family at least once a month for six months before the mother finally took her baby to be immunized. "I guess that momma just got tired of looking at me," the aide said. "But when that momma brought her baby into the clinic, oh, that just lifted my 'mints so!"

It's the good incidents that make the program worthwhile and workable. State Health Department officials say that the program has been quite successful in encouraging and recording complete immunization of children under five years of age. If every parent would cooperate, the crippling diseases of children could be all but eliminated as a major health problem.

So, if there's a new baby in your home, look for that first card from the Texas State Health Department. Let us know that your child is protected. And, if you forget to send back the card, don't be surprised when an aide knocks at your door. She's a Community Immunization Service Aide, and she's there to help you and your children put the accent on health.
