FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK In spite of the colorful autumn season, activities throughout Texas are continuously increasing to acquaint the general public with our Czech heritage, as most of you are fully aware of the feature attraction is The State Fair of Texas and Czech Day at the Fair, in Dallas, for which the date of October 7th has been designated. Countless Czech people will congregate on this day at the coliseum for numerous performances by many Czech fraternal societies including the well-known Sokols, who always gain recognition with their continuous original presentations.

The popular Beseda performance will again provide an outstanding presentation which is composed of three generations dancing in their colorful costumes. Of course, the singing by various Czech groups will provide fine entertainment which brings back memories of the days of our youth.

Chairman John G. Bubak extends a cordial invitation to the general public to attend the traditional spirited occasion, where continued activities will take place at the Band Shell to complete the fun-filled day.

The day, October 7, has also been designated as City of West Day and numerous Westites will make their way to Big D and enjoy the festivities. Among that number will be West Mayor and Mrs. Jos. F. Holasek, plus the city's "Miss West" and other

Generally speaking, only the best is wished for another successful Czech Day in Dallas. * * In an elegant setting prepared by Lodge No. , Houston, on Sunday, September 23rd for the State Royalty Contest, the highlight attraction of youth activities for 1973 concluded with a beautiful representation of our fine young people of the sparr in their best formal attire, from five districts. Although District VII did not have a representation, it was regrettable that our District IV absence was due to school interference with their participation and too extended

a distance to travel.

A delicious noon meal began the festivities for the large gathering and gave time to reminisce with the old and new acquaintances, plus viewing the spacious lodge's facilities by those who were making their first visit to Lodge 88. When the final time approached, the stage curtain in the Chandelier Ballroom opened on a colorful picture of our reigning State Royalty and candidates in their designated places. State Queen Connie Hrncir (Dist. VII) and State King Marvin Patak (Dist. III) emceed certain parts of their assignments in their friendly way tol help the candidates maintain confidence and courage during their speech presentations. We repeat that each year the results of the speech presentations are exceptionally good and contained much knowledge which shows they did a great amount of research.

Before the judges were introduced, SYD Dorothy Massey, expressed her appreciation to them for their devoted services to our young people of the SPJST. A biography of each judge was given, with a token of appreciation that was presented by Sister Massey while the tabulation of points was in process.

The retiring couple expressed their sentiments for the valuable experience they have gained and how much it meant to them to represent the youth in the SPJST. Also to better acquaint our general membership with the candidates, SYD Dorothy Massey pointed out the background of each candidate: Roseanne Martine (Dist. II) Cindy Horak (Dist. III) Lynn Wahlberg (Dist. V), Monica Merta (Dist.

VI), Renea, Koehler (Dist. I), Linn Lesak (Dist. V), Dick Dusek (Dist. I), Frankie Klinkovsky (Dist. in , James Vanek (Dist. VI), Johnnie Gaidusek (Dist. III), while each contestant paraded down the colorfully decorated platform with a spotlight in the background, enhancing the beautiful atmosphere.

Then came the moment everyone waited for. SL President Nick Morris with SYD Dorothy Massey's assistance, carefully double-checked the results to make sure the announcement of the 1973-74 State Royalty was in order. Winners were announced in the following orded: Runners-up, 3rd, Frankie Klinkovsky, Jr. (Dist. II); 2nd, Dick Dusek (Dist. I); and Linn Lesak (Dist. V, Lodge 88) was declared State King. Queen winners included, runners-up: 3rd, Lynn Wahlberg (Dist. V); 2nd, Monica Merta (Dist. VI); and Cindy Horak (Dist.

III, Lodge 84) was crowned State Queen.

Following the impressive coronation ceremonies, the new State Royalty made an appearance together on the platform where the spotlight focused to bring out the glitter of the queen's crown-tiara, and the king's sceptre, with their richly colored robes which enhanced their royalty attire before an appreciative audience; while State Duchess Janet Pokladnik (Dist. III, Lodge 84) and State Duke Ronnie Barcak (Dist. V, Lodge 88) shared their happiness throughout the evening. Then the musicians of Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen provided beautiful music for young and old and for a grand march led by State King Linn Lesak and State Queen Cindy Horak with other participants participated who were highly acclaimed. Dancing continued for those who were able to stay for the fine entertainment but to some of us it meant an early departure due to children attending school the next day.

It is fitting to conclude this account of the State Royalty with several perltinent comments: ench contestant did exceptionally well; each would have been an asset to the SPJST as 'State Queen or King; let's not forget these fine boys and girls now that the contest is over. In each of your districts, invite your royalty representative to attend your functions, so that we may show our appreciation for their participation, and through their appearance lay the groundwork for an even greater State Royalty Contest next year!

In our closing remarks, the elegant occasion was a triumph of expert planning enhanced by the hosts and hostesses for members and friends who could not fail to appreciate the warm hospitality which speaks well of your lodge home.

Trlica-Kopecky Reunion The 19th Trlica-Kopecky Reunion will be held at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville on Sunday, October 14th. Everyone is asked to bring a basket lunch and enjoy the day with us.

Mrs. Charlie Melnar Secretary-Treasurer Marie Kvasnicka, 89, died in a Ballinger hospital on September 25, 1973.

Funeral services were held on September 26th from a Ballinger funeral home, with burial in the Rowena Cemetery. Honorary President Brother Edward L. Marek officiated at the funeral services on behalf of the SPJST. Sister Kvasnicka joined the SPJST on November 16, 1919, at the age of 35, when she joined Lodge No. 49, Rowena. Her husband, Vaclav Kvasnicka, preceded her in death a few years back and was a big supporter and worked for the SPJST. Her son, Emil, has been writing insurance for the SPJST in that area for many years and continues to be an active worker for the SPJST. * * I. J. Baca, 77, of Route 2, Temple, died in a Temple hospital on Saturday, September 22. Funeral services were held on Monday from the Hope Lutheran Church in Buckholts, with burial in the Hope Lutheran Cemetery. Brother Baca was a well-known Texas musician and repairer of instruments. He had lived in the New Colony community for many years

The couple was married October 9, 1923 in Cameron. Mrs. Vybiral is the former Minnie Tomasek, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Anton Tomasek of Buckholts. Mr, Vybiral is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Vybiral of Buckholts.

After their marriage the couple farmed in the Ad. Hall community until their retirement in 1961. They now live in Cameron.

Brother and Sister Vybiral are members of the SPJST Lodge No. 15, in Buckholts where Brother Vybiral served as treasurer for 25 years. All of their children are also members of the same lodge.

The honorees have fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

With food prices as high as they are they give you all this (and including the drink) for only $2.00 for adults and $1.50 for children. by Vice President Andrew Vavra in the absence of President Bill Trcalek.

The pledge of allegiance was repea:ed by all members present. The minutes were then approved with one minor correction.

Two new members were accepted into the lodge. They are Gail Zavodny and Mark D. Skrabanek.

Under nev business, plans for a nicney-making project were tabled until the October meeting. It was also discussed that the District I fail meeting would be held at Snook on Oetober 28th.

After the treasurer's report, the meeting was adjourned until the second Sunday in October.

Dear Members, You will be happy to know that our meeting was well attended last Monday, even if there was the Monday night football game to contend with.

President Salac saw to it that mem-

bens were able to leave in time to sea the game after taking care of lodge business; you should have been there!

Our dancing youth is practicing to be at their best for the State Fair of Texas on October 7th. Be there to wa§ch them and all the Czechs who gather foam near and far.

Our teen Beseda group was seen dancing at the Folklore Festival in San Antonio, September 8 and then September 9, our junior youth Beseda circle and other talented members from our Lodge 84 ehtertained the guests at the S.P.J. S T. Rest Home in Taylor.

Get-well wishes go out to Sister Janelle Wienken who recently broke her ammi Congratulations to Sister Lisa Sedecky who is state winner in her age group; she baked cook'es and were they good!

The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council meets Thursday, October 25th a* 7:30 p. m. in the Guardian. Savings and Loan Bldg., 539 W. Jefferson. You're invited to attend.

We will cherish it with great honor and appreciation.

We will display the plaque in the lobby of our lodge home, Lodge '74, as a historical event which was presented to us on Dedication Day; and it will be there as a symbol of progress in our community of Houston County, to show what charitable time, money and experience can do in a community.

A thank you also to everyone at the Supreme Lodge and staff for the wellplanned program of fraternal arrangements for our Dedication Day. A sincere thanks to the charter members Mrs. Omelina, Mrs. Annie Green, and Mr. Prikryl all of whom made the day complete in their Czechoslovakian costumes; they were indeed beautiful! We are thankful to Sister Annie Green who donated a Holy Bible and podium to the lodge, in memory of her mother, and Brother Edward Olsen for being so dedicated, and who was MC during the Dedication Day. Last, but NOT LEAST, our thanks to our very own members for the preparations, hard work, and faithfulness in helping to build our building and lodge from a few members to what we have today, and your cooperation plus devoted time in all of our activities.

I have all the confidence and faith in all of our local members; that we will all continue to go forward where we will always have the very best lodge building for everyone, so we can take our family and enjoy good clean entertainment for all, which, in this day and time, we need so desperately as I stated at the dedication ceremonies: "Let it be for our young: people, grandchildren and our elder members as a place of gathering with love of God and fellowmen and freedom from politics which is self-explanatory for all. never will be forgotten as a history of progress; not what we had 100 year or 50 years ago! Now is the positive thinking, we know what has happened years ago, but no one knows what will happen from now on. Let's everyone ask ourselves, what can we do for young people and fellowmen instead of what we can make out of it for ourselves?"

To Brother Sefcik. We have a wonderful program of progress pre pared for our Lovelady lodge, and we feel that you are a part of us, too.

I am sorry that this letter will take so much of the space in the Vestnik but I hope you can arrange it to the best of your ability.

At the State YAD, recently held in Taylor, our youth club was named State Youth Club of the Year and for this honor we are really proud and especially do we thank Mrs. Amelia Pokorny, youth leader for a job well done, for without her we never could have achieved this great honor and the beautiful trophy.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, October 14 at 4 p.m, and we hope to see everyone there.

Names in the news: E-4 James Vornsand has been visiting here with his parents, Bill and Evelyn Vornsand.

It was talking to James and he has been just about everywhere since he has been in the service. While stationed in Okinawa, he went to the Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, Guam, and Singapore. For the next nine months, James will be at Fort Eustis in Virginia. Nice to see you, Jimmie, and hurry home.

At the Texas Dutchmen dance on September 15th, two couples celebrated anniversaries: Bob and Mary Kudelka, 33 years, and Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Ward, 34 years. Birthday celebrants at this dance were Mary Kubza, Sharon Cerny, Marilyn Parsons, Helen Barton, Robin Lawrence, Tom White, and Rosalie Lobpries.

The children of Brother Abner and Sister Dorothy Dixon honored them on their silver wedding anniversary with a cocktail dinner party for a large number of friends at Lodge 88 on September 22. The party was enjoyed by all. At the Knights of Dixie dance which followed, other anniversary celebrants besides the Dixons were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kubeczka, 48 years, and Mr. and Mrs. Shelby Barnes, 28 years. The next meeting of the Ladies' Circle will be Thursday, October 11th at 10:30 a. in. All members are asked to bring a covered dish.

The September meeting was called to order by Vice President Millie Wruble for President Lillie McMillan who was vacationing.

Many members had arrived earlier than the scheduled meeting time in order to get a head start on the quilt that was being made. Mrs. Strnad was the earliest early bird at 7:30 a. ni. and proved to be one of the fastest and most industrious quitters there. She told of learning to quilt when she was. just a young girl and says it just comes naturally to her now. (She's a young 77 years of age.)

The meetings progressed around the quilting session or the quilting progressed around the meeting -- either way, a lot was accomplished.

Since the Polka Festival will be held October 21st, members are asked to bring any completed items (not perishable) for the Cesky Obchod to the October 11th meeting. If you have an item that is not complete by this meeting date but expect to have it finished for the Ochod, it can be noted and this will help determine what will be available for the booth. All items that could be sold in a country store are needed such as home-canned goods, baked breads and kolache, needlework items and anything that could be sold as a novelty.

Slice so many members are talented cook:. and seamstresses, it should not be too difficult to have a well-stocked booth for this special event.

—SPJSTLODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members, Here is my recipe for the kolache so many have asked about: Cream 1 cup sugar, 1 cup margarine. Add 2 eggs, 1 cup mashed potatoes (I use instant), 1 cup warm water, 1 cup warm milk in which 2 yeast cakes have been dissolved. Add 1 tablespoon salt, 1 teaspoon vanilla, about 8 cups of flour to make a soft pliable dough. Knead until pliable.

Brush with shortening and put in a warm place to rise until double in size.

Take 1/2 tablespoon size lumps and stretch to flat rounds. Place one teaspoon of filling in center of each round. Draw up edge of dough, pinch together, pat and place upside down in a greased pan one inch apart. Let rise slightly. Use teaspoon and finger and make indentation in center of each kolache and fill with 1/2 teaspoon of topping. Bake at 400 degrees F. until brown. Brush top with melted butter when done. Yields six dozen. You can use any fruit you wish.

Topping 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour, 1/4 lb. margarine, 1 teaspoon salt. Work together until the consistency of corn meal preferably by hand. Add 1/2 cup finely chopped pecans, 1/2 cup finely chopped coconut.

Fraternally yours, Otto Hanus, Reporter —s?JsTLODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Members, Many weeks have slipped by since my last letter to the Vestnik and I just can't help but have a guilty conscience when I open the Vestnik rind suddenly realize that a report should have been mailed in from our lodge, and which I have failed to do, for some reason or another.

Our last meeting, which was held on the 2nd Wednesday night in September, was interesting, informative and well attend as often as they could, but with so many activities which are all involved in, it becomes fairly difficult to find an open evening when there isn't anything going on anywhere.

It is interesting to note how well the dances have been attended whenever we have the different bands playing at the lodge building. We have polka bands, and country-w estein and each one attracts those who enjoy that particular kind of music.

It is through these functions that we are able to make great strides in reducing the financial obligations, to which the membership has commit ted itself, when the lodge building was constructed 3 years ago.

This brings up another reminder, and that is that we will have the Vrazel Orchestra playing for us for the annual celebration. Instead of making it a 2-day affair, we will have ing the dance on Saturday night, October the 27th. This is the type of music that everyone can enjoy, and on top of that, we will try to make this a little special for you.

Then Sunday, the 28th, the lodge will make it a little easier, and prepare a treat for the families of Lodge 25; instead of having a dinner for

9 the public, we will have a dinner for our members and their guests.

Each family is requested to bring a covered dish, either vegetable, salad, or dessert, and the meat course will be furnished, so make plans now, and reserve this particular weekend, for enjoyment all the way.

In the near future, we are planning to construct tennis courts on the west side of the building; with the idea that these will serve a multi-purpose, when 'the need arises. The youth of our lodge certainly will be able to take advantage of these courts, for they can have many other activities outdoors.

Our next meeting will be On a Sunday afternoon, on October 14th at 2 p.m. With the change of time, we switch the meeting to Sunday afternoons, for six months, or during the fall and winter months.

Accompanying is a report on the First Quarterly Report Disbursement for the youth year. I hope we can really see an increase here this time next year. This is a decrease from last year of $41.00. Is it YOUR youth club that is down? With this report, I have sent out 31 checks, and last year for the first quarterly report, I sent out 32 checks. I don't like to see a decrease at any time, and it takes every person doing what is expected of them to keep our Youth Department on the "grow." Every youth is very important, and when you don't attend a 'meeting, you are letting the other members down, so keep up the good work, and let's build up the interest with regular attendance at each monthly meeting.

Last, but not least, I would like to say I am very proud of our youth club for making a good shOwing at State YAD and State Royalty. We were one of the top ten youth clubs and youth leaders. We also had three of the top ten youth; they are Jody Elzner, Vicki Hegwood and Carla Adams. We got first place in Beseda: those participating were Jody Elzner, Kenny Broz, Vicki Hegwood, Gary Ermis, Cindy Wehring, John Broz, _alak and Linn Lesak Ronnie Arlene M Barcak won first place in 6 to 12 craft . At State Royalty, Lodge 88 member Linn Lesak was selected new State King. Our lodge and District V Queen Lynn Wahlberg came in third place. The competition was great!

Fraternally, Louise Knapick. YL --SPJSTLETTERS FROM THE YOUTH DIST. M YOUTH CLUB MEETING Dear Mmbers and Readers, On September 16, 1973 the District III youth club meeting was called to order by Secretary-Treasurer Cynthia Banik, due to the absence of the president and vice president.

The reading of the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Then the reading of the Executive Council meeting minutes were read and approved.

There were five lodges present with a total of twenty-nine members. Also, there were eleven youth leaders and assistant youth leaders, two visitors, and SYD Dorothy Massey and DYC Wilma Nesuda present.

The scrapbook was shown by Historian Pattie Stanislay.

Under old business we discussed our charity project which will be: making or collecting items for the schools with Special Education class or Kindergarten, which will be donated by the District III youth club. The charity projects completion should be done by the next district meeting.

Under new business, a day camp was discussed — May 6, 1974 was decided on. The site has been narrowed down and is being looked into. A committee was organized for the one-day camp; they consist of the following: Site location — Mr. Kamas

September 10 we held our regular monthly meeting. We had two new members. Also we had a new craft, making fuzzy animals; it sure was furl.

Then on September 11 we attended and entertained at the adult meeting.

Our club has a new money-making project started. We are selling fuzzy animals.

Brother Kopecky was born on September 6, 1889 at West Point, Texas, and was a resident of 1407 Austin St., La Marque. He lived in La Marque for the past 23 years and prior to that he was a longtime Galveston resident.

A retired employee of the Fallstaff Brewing Co., Brother Kopecky was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in La Marque, member of Galveston Lodge 173, Sens of Hermann Lodge Galveston, and a veteran of the United States Navy.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 12th at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church at La Marque, with Rev. Myron Hoff officiating. Burial was in Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery at Hitchcock.

Brother Kopecky is survived by his wife Helen Kopecky of La Marque; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Finks, Mrs. Clara Janicek of Wallis, Mrs. Albina Palasek of La Marque, and Mrs. Valasta Cave of Sinton; three brothers, Vincent Kopecky, Edward Sarman of Galveston, and Adolph Sarman of Aurara, Colorado.

RESIDENT, DIES

Brother Rudolf Myska, a retired farmer' and widely-known in Pleasanton, died Monday, August 13th in Mercy Hospital in Jourdanton. He had been a resident of Pleasanton for more than 40 years.

Funeral services for Brother Myska

were held Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. from the Hurley Chapel. The Rev. Thomas O'Brien, pastor of the St. Andrew's Catholic Church officiated, and burial was in the Pleasanton City Cernetery. Arrangements were by the Hurley Funeral Home.

Brother Myska Was born on. January 11, 1889, in Czechoslovakia, and immigrated to the United States in 1910. He moved to Pleasanton to make his home in 19e1. Bro, Myska was a member of Lodge 147, Jourdanton for a long time.

Surviving are: a son, Rudy Myska of Pleasanton; three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Mazur, and Mrs. Pauline Fojtik,

16 both of Pleasanton, and Mrs. Millie Hrbacek of Port Lavaca; 17 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren.

EMIL II. HORELICA who passed away Wednesday, July 11, 1973 at the age of 68 years.

Brother Horelica was born in Praha, Texas, and was a resident of Houston for 17 years. He was with the Houston Fire Department for 29 years and retired 'a 1963 as Senior Captain. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Brother Horelica was a very active member in SPJST Lodge No. 88 and Sokol Houston. At our lodge he was active in both the Choral Club and Dramatic Club Hlahol. Brother Horelica was one of the leading sales representatives in our lodge, usually being chairman of their projects; he was the state winner in insurance sales for four years.

He held the office of second vice-president for two years and was first vice president at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs„ Rose Horelica; daughters, Miss Mary Ann Horelica, Mrs. Shirley Krolczyk; son, Leslie Horelica; sisters, Mrs.. Brother Sugarek is survived by his wife Mary (Kalmus) Sugarek; one stepson, Alfred Kalmus of San Antonio; six sisters; one brother. One brother and one sister preceded him in death.

Brother Baca was wellknown for his andities in playing many different musical instruments. He was taught music at an early age by his uncle and he taught many others on various musical instruments.. His brothers and Brother Baca formed the Baca Orchestra while he was a teenager and it became wellkin.wn throughout Texas. He was also the founder of the Czech Melody Hour program on KTEM Radio Station in Temple in 1936, and the program is still on the air. He organized the band of Rogers High School and was the band director for many years. He was the owner and operator of Baca. Music Co. of Temple.

A member of Lodge 15, Brother Baca had joined the lodge on December 7, 1919 and was a very faithful member all those years. He also was a member of the Hope Lutheran, Church in Buckbolts.

LIFE PRESERVER LAWS TO CHANGE OCTOBER 1 Austin — As the October 1 deadline draws near, confusion seems to be mounting in regard to the new personal flotation device (PFD) regulations for recreational boats, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials.

On boats 16 feet or longer, each person on board or on skis will now be required to have access to either a Type I, II, or III (wearable) PFD. Additionally, there will have to be at least one Type IV (throwable) PFD on board.

Boats less than 16 feet long and

17 all canoes and kayaks will not be affected by the new regulations. These still must be equipped with one Type I, II, III or IV PFD for each person on board, including skiers.

The law also requires that all life preserves used be U.S. Coast Guard approved with the approval number indicated on the PFD itself.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has printed a generous supply of wallet-sized cards which explain the October 1 change in regulations. These cards may be obtained free of charge by writing the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Water Safety, John H. Reagan Building.

KUBIAK'S LEGISLATIVE REPORTS Nine proposed constitutional amend merits will appear on the ballot on November 6 of this year. Amendment No. 1 deals with annual sessions and legislator's salaries; Amendment No. 2 deals with homestead exemptions for single adults; and Amendment No. 3 gives a $3,000 ad valorem tax exemption to single adults 65 and over. Amendment No. 4 is the topic of this week's discussion.

Amendment No. 4 would require that any proposed bill to create a conservation and reclamation district be submitted to each city and county in whose jurisdiction the proposed district is to be located at the time noticeof intention to introduce the bill is published. This would allow cities and counties to file their written approval or disapproval to the proposed district with the Governor, Lt. Governor and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Conservation and reclamation districts were first used as vehicles to solve the problems of development in the rural areas, but there has been some abuse of powers as exhibited recently in the metropolitan areas.

In 1964 the Constitution was amended to require notice of the proposed introduction of any bill to create a district be published within the boundaries of the proposed district

18 but that has been ignored to a great extent.

Arguments for: It is a proven fact that conservation and reclamation districts with their unlimited powers to incur debt, issue bonds, and in essence create there own kingdom, have in the past been created and later transferred to the cities. Then, the cities must assume all of the debts and obligations created by the piece of legislation without having anything to say about what was spent or what transpired• This placed a financial burden on these people without their having any expression of their wishes at all Passage of this amendment would close the loophole of creating a district without the approval or disapproval of the county and the city or cities where the proposed district is to be created.

Arguments against: Cities and counties already have adequate control over districts loeated or to be located within their boundaries through approval of plans and annexation procedures. Therefore, the procedures proposed by this amendment are unnecessary and would create another burden on those attempting to establish conversation and reclamation districts.

The cities and counties already have an adequate system through their elected Legislators for commenting on and objecting to the proposed legislation. It is felt by those opposing this measure that this would not help substantially in setting conservation and reclamation • districts.

Answer: A good source of information on first-aid is the First Aid Manual published by the American National Red Cross. Here are some tips from that book. and other sources.

Poisonous Snakes If you are bitten by a poisonous • snake, pain is immediate. As the venom is absorbed into the blood stream (which may take up to 1-2 - hours), you will feel general weakness, shortness of breath, nausea and vomitinng, a weak and rapid pulse, and sometimes dimness of vision.

Stop muscular activity at once.

NEWS

Tie constricting band around the bite if on an extremity, like arms and legs. It should be tight enough to prevent return flow of blood in surface vessels but not enough to shut off the deep-lying vessels. If properly adjusted there will be some oozing from the wound.

If medical help is nearby, go there immediately. Bring along the dead snake if possible so that its venom can be identified and the proper medicine selected.

Otherwise, sterilize a knife blade with match flame. Make cross-cuts about one-fourth inch deep at each fang mark and over suspected venom deposit point. Cuts crossways should be shallow, long-way cuts may he deeper. Be careful in either case to avoid cutting muscles and nerves, especially in fingers, hands and wrists.

Apply suction for an hour or more using mouth or suction cup, Venom is not a stomach poison but if using mouth, rinse out to avoid any gum infection.

Finally, always keep in flat position even when being moved and keep wound slightly lower than rest of body. Apply ice or cold water to the area when possible to slow the absortion and ease the pain.

Chiggers Chiggers do not attach themselves for an hour or more after they get on your body. Therefore brushing with soapy water and then using undiluted denatured alcohol should get rid of them. Once bitten, ice water, baking soda solution, ammonia water or strong alcohol solution can provide partial relief.

Ticks Ticks can transmit diseases such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever To remove them, cover the ticks with heavy oil (mineral, salad or machine) to close their breathing pores. If a tick remains after one-half hour, remove it carefully with tweezers. Using tweezers or a lighted cigarette without the oil could leave parts of the tick embedded in your skin.

Leeiblies Do not pull them if attached to you.

Cover them with salt.

Bees and Wasps If you disturb a nest several yards away, stand still for a few minutes and then crawl away. If attacked, run through the thickest undergrowth around or into water.

Once stung, immediately apply ice or ice water to the spot. Some people

(If you know you are allergic to this type of bite, also tie a constricting band above the sting if on an extremity. Seek medical care quickly.)

Black Widow Spider Female: one-half inch long, shiny black, usually red hour-glass marking on underside.

Male: one-eighth inch long with several white stripes and hourglass on underside and red stripe on back.

A bite from a black widow causes redness and only slight swelling. Pain is very severe: profuse sweating, nausea, muscle cramps, and difficulties in breathing and speaking.

If the bite is on an extremity, apply tight constricting narrow hand.

If higher, use wider band above the bite on heart side. Remove the banc.1 after five minutes.

Pack area with ice for two hours.

Keep wounded extremity lower than rest of body.

Obtain medical help.

If medical care is still unavailable after several hours, a hot bath may give relief to severe muscle pain.

JESENIKY MOUNTAINS — PROTECTED RURAL AREA The Czech Lands of the Czechoslovak Republic are sheltered by a belt of mountain ranges like ramparts which seem to emphasize their unity and completeness. These ranges not only form a sort of demarcation in relief of the borders of the country, but they are also a lovely garland of lofty splendour with the Jeseniky among them, far from being the least significant or the least interesting.

The Jeseniky ridge stretches from the Ramzovsky Pass in a slight semicircle from North-West to SouthWest forming Hruby Jesenik, with the main group of summits — Keprnik.

Praded, Orlik and IVIraveneenik, dropping to Nizky Jesenik and the final promonotory which is Kope6ek not far from Olomouc.

Hruhy Jesenik attains its greatest heights in Praded (1492 in), being the highest mountain in Moravia, Vysoka hole (1464 m) and Keprnik (1423 m).

Beyond the Ramzovsky Pass lies the mighty mountain group of Kralicky Snanik with its summit 1424 m above sea level.

The Hruhy Jesenik region is one of bountiful rainfall and a dense

Wednesday, October 3, 1973 network of streamlets, freshets, brooks and small rivers, making the area a rich source for both the rivers Morava 'and Odra. The great ridge of Hruby Jesenik forms one of the most important watersheds of Europe for the Black Sea ( the rivers Hudiva, Divoka Desna and Branna is tributaries of the Morava) and the Baltic (the rivers Bila, Stfedni, Oen:a Opava and Moravice as tributaries of the Odra).

About nine-tenths of the total area of the Hruby Jesenik is forested, mainly fir, with fir trees also predominant in the mixed growth. Stunted pine which was first planted here in the sixties of the last century, was to begin with, a foreign element here but is now quite at home and has become an inseparable characteristic of the slopes of Praded and Vysoka hole.

The flora of Hruby Jesenik is typical for the area and among the vegetation of the mountain slopes and the grassy summits above the timber line can be found several rare plant specimens. It is impossible to list and describe all the tiny and sometimes insignificant pecies growing here but mention should be made of Campanula barbata which can be found only here. It is endemic of the Jeseniky Mountains and has become the symbol of this range.

One of the most interesting natural areas of Hruby Jesenik are the peat bogs at Skritek. They are mountain marshes covering around 135 hectares lying a shallow basin at the source of Podolsky brook and having the character of the silent, melancholic tundra of the North. There is almost a fairytale charm in the marshes and the Mechove lake near the village of Rej viz. The ominouss dark waters of the small Mechove lake and the peculiar vegetation in the surrounding marshes with their treacherous though splendid carpet of moss makes a visit to these places unforgettable.

The fauna of Hruby Jesenik also has its own peculiarities. A patient observer of Nature sometimes has the good luck to catch sight of deer, hinds and roe-deer, or even a chamois family on the steep slope of Medvedi dill. He may also hear the dramatic call of the deer in autumn or glimpse a fleeing black boar. Smaller animals such as the water vole, and rare species of field and mountain mice live here a hidden and

VESTNiK quiet life among the vegetation or in clefts in the rocks and arouse hardly any attention. And should we spot, circling high above us. a buzzard or even an eagle which our friend Jaromir Tomedek caught sight of on the Petrovy kameny, the Nature will have shown us the elite of her winged creatures.

Should we start our tour across Hruby Jesenik at Kralicky Snekiik then we shall get, by degrees, to all the lovely spots of this range. The path will take us to Ramzovsky Pass through which pass the main road and the railway from Central Moravia to both spas, Lipova and Jesenik. It was in this lost corner of the world that Vincenc Priessnitz was born dur ing the last months of the 18th century. He later gained fame as a "water doctor" and a miraculous natural healer, founding here a spa that gained world renown. A steep path leads from Ramzova. to Serak from the summit of which many mountain lowers have gazed with delight over the Northern boundary of this ridge. The path along the ridge then stretches out to Keprnik with a view which is, if possible, even more delightful and from here runs to the West the mighty group of rock formations, Vozka, around which the fantasy of the local people of years gone by has woven legends of hunger, bread and the punishment of wicked man for evil words and lies.

The next halt on pour way is the Vfesova studanka under Oervena hora (1353 m) where the spring is supposed to work miracles. Earlier, a little wooden church stood here but it was struck by lightening during World War II and burned out. From the summit of tervena hora there is a wonderful views down into the Huelva Desna valley, to the VOzka rocks and, in the distance, Kralicky Sneinik. Further along the path is the 6ervenohorsky Pass, one of the centers for tourism and sport in the Jeseniky Mountains and the road going from Aumperk by way of Kouty nad Desnou and Domakov to the Jesenik Spa. The path along the ridge takes us from oervenohorsky Pass through Klinovec and both Jezerniks to "AvYcarna", a chalet on the gentle slope of Maly fed and this is a place worthy of making a halt. A quiet hour spent reclining on the meadow, bright with the colors of wild flowers breathing into the air their sweet

perfume, will be an experience not to be forgotten for the rest of your life.

From here then, it is not far to Pi-acted, the monarch of this range, with a panoramatic view over, all points of the compass.

Bila Opavice has its source in the pass between Praded and Petrovy kameny. Along its rocky bed, in the very first kilometres of its flow, are waterfalls, wild and romantic, which enhance the lyrical quality of these hills. The primeval character of the forest here is a result of the huge boulders strewn among the decaying stumps of trees and rotting timber overgrown with fungi, moss and lichens. Lower down lies the magical Karlova Studanka, a spa with mineral springs and snug wooden buildings, now a center for the healing of the dust-filled lungs of miners and stone breakers.

The ridge path which we are following takes us from the Kursovni Chalet, which is perhaps the most lively center for winter sport and from the Ovdarna chalet to Petrovy kameny, terraced gneis rocks around which have been woven the old legend about the hermit Peter and the spiteful Devil. In this area there are several localities which have been made reservations because of their rare vegetation, each of them like a rich botanical garden of mountain flora. We pass by way of Kamzidnik and Maj to reach Jeleni studanka (Hart Spring) which is just as lovely and poetical as its name. The path then takes us through groups of rocks such as Bfidlidna, Pee and Ztraeerie skaly to Skfitek where our tour of Hruby Jesenik ends on the road from §umperk to Rymafov.

ACCENT ON HEALTH

Food-borne disease" epidemics caused by unsanitary conditions don't happen too often, despite the millions. of meals served weekly by Texas restaurants, but when an outbreak occurs it can be costly to an establishment and its patrons.

Suffering from a variety of intestinal ailments may strike the unlucky food poisoning victim, whilt, the restaurant may face economic loss because of bad publicity.

The Texas State Department of Health and local health units, through inspection of food establish-

20 ments and training of employees in proper food handling techniques, has a big interest in the restaurant industry.

Two years ago the teaching of food hygiene by the Health Department's Public Health Education Division took a new approach. In the past, instruction throughout the state had been given directly to food handlers, cafe and restaurant owners by a specialist from the Austin office.

Now, courses in "Teaching Food Hygiene" 'are given for health department sanitarians, food and drug representatives, and others to equip them to teach food handling courses at the local level. When a local inspector observes improper food handl ing, he can schedule his own clinic for personnel in one restaurant or a group of restaurants. The local inspector can count on the support of some $15,000 worth of training films on various phases of food hygiene available from the Health Department's Film Library. In addition, there is a comprehensive teaching outline 'and a wide selection of printed materials.

Food handlers in all parts of Texas may receive the training which will better equip them to serve the eating -out public with correct food handling techniques.

As a case in point, the Food and Drug Division of the Health Department's Region 10 has initiated a food sanitation program designed to better prepare local health departments to conduct their own programs.

It focuses on the nature and causes of food-borne diseases and the proper sanitation methods needed to combat those diseases.

The program, aimed at both local health department officials and restaurant personnel, is based on a three -phase plan.

First, in areas already served by local health departments, sanitation programs are being upgraded by surveys of existing inspection practices. Educational facilities and information in local health departments are being supplemented, and instructor courses in food hygiene are being presented.

Phase 2 focuses on areas not served by local health departments. Included in this efforts are the education of owners and managers in the needs for periodic inspections and training of personnel.

VtSTNIK Phase 3 is aimed at school cafeterias. Inspection of rural school cafeterias, particularly in areas that don't have an inspection program, is planned. And, the food handlers school has been made available on request.

In the Rio Grande Valley served

by Region 10, the "grassroots" approach is being taken. Instruction is being taken directly to restaurant personnel to give them pointers in proper sanitation techniques and personal hygiene.

To reach as many people as possible, training is directed first to local health officials and sanitarians so they in turn can teach others whom the regional staff cannot reach, Then, when the local sanitarian inspects a restaurant and spots a violation, he can then instruct the restaurant personnel as to the proper sanitation methods they should use.

Aside from general cleanliness, and protection of foodstuffs from insects, vermin and dust, food handlers are constantly being reminded to watch the temperatures of food. Hot foods should always be kept above 140 degrees, and cold foods must be kept at 45 degrees and below. Heating or chilling of food must be done rapidly.

Object of this intensive effort in food handling is to protect you, the restaurant-goer, from any food-borne disease.

Recently, in an adjoining state food poisoning occurred in three separate functions: a company picnic, a wedding reception and a service club banquet, Source of the illness was traced to one catering firm. Investigation showed that proper hand washing, plus proper temperatures in food storage, could have prevented the food-borne disease outbreaks.

Po jednoroenim studiu slovanske filologie a archeologie, po seminarnich cvieenich z oblasti byzantclogle odchazi mlady vedec do Patite. ktera byla proslavenkrn centrem byzardskYch studii. Ve sttedu 3. tijna 1973 roladt vedec habilitoval a v roce 1928 byl tit jmenovan profesorem na teee fakulte. V duleich spisech prof.
