ATTENTION, ALL YOUTH LEADERS: Don't forget the state youth leaders' training seminar at Robert Harrington's camp on the dates of September 29 and 30. SYD Dorothy Massey requests that you attend this seminar.

Month after month space in the SPJST Vestnik Herald has been devotd to informative happenings and other pertinent information concerning numerous activities by the various local and district secretaries, reporters and other correspondents who keep the members and readers abreast of their lodge and district . meetings.

Last month when District II held their District Youth Recreational Day ill conjunction with a brief district meeting, regrettably vp. were unable to attend. However, since the beginning of the new year. District II has attributed much distinction among its membership: the 1973 insurance sales quota has bcen reached; organization of a new lodge, Lodge 177 in Academy: Lodge 174, Rockdale. is considering building a lodge home; re-activation of Lodge 18 in Elgin, which promises an increase in membership; organization of a youth club at Lodge 155 in Austin; the building addition of Lodge 80 in Holland; and, of course, the much talked-about Lodge 74, Lovelady.

Incidentally, mentioning Lovelady lodge, we were advised by Lodge 74 President R. J. Hafner, that the membership at their recent meeting approved a 20 x 50 foot addition to the new lodge home, for recreational and youth purposes. With their weekly socials, they are having a tremendous increase of membership and guests; to be exact, there were 58 young people at the recreational building, according to Brother Hafner. He emphasized on their 1974 plans which included the approval of a 50 x 80 addition for lodge premises and an olympic-size swimming pool.

Wednesday, September 26, 1973 ber 16th at Lodge 92 in Fort Worth which hosted the District III fall meeting and what resulted in another constructive and informative meeting by the district officers who presented favorable reports on their respective topics for some discussion.

Since my wife and yours truly have attended district meetings throughout the state for the past 20 years, we feel that the membership learns more of the Society's operations and progress on various levels by attending district meetings and getting acquainted with the state and, district elected officials.

It was interesting to learn from the report of the district's operation

by District Sales Representative Alvin Nesuda, who brought out facts on the progress of District III: the anticipation oi organizing a new lodge in Burleson. and one in the Longview-Kilgore area with the assistance of Brother Gene and Sister Clara Hablinski and Brother Hugo and Sister Viola Kocian (formerly of Houston and members of Lodge 88). Much to our surprise, we were delighted to see the two couples attending the district meeting and creating interest in the SPJST family circle to help establish a lodge in the north-eastern part of the state. Our lengthy acquaintance speaks well of their character and employment where they are known for their loyalty and devotion in the supervisory capacity for over twenty years; therefore, our view is very optimistic about the organization of a new lodge in the LongviewKilgore area, and with the encouragement there is but one way — forward! May thei best be in store for them.

Another favorable report was given

by District III Youth Counselor Wilma Nesuda who always has a satisfactory report on the district's activities to the membership and who focuses her thoughts directly to the point. She constantly strives for interesting activities for the youth and the leaders, plus her concentration on various topics that will or will not work in her district. For instance, a good topic was discussed about a one-day District III youth camp with the membership's approval. The youth of District III also turned out in a large number to hold their meeting and elect their own District Youth Club officers for a one-year term. It is commendable of them in the way they conducted their district youth meeting with the assistance of Sister Wilma Nesuda, and many youth

VESTN I K leaders who were in attendance, to guide our young people, in fraternal leadership and t ech them the importance of the SPJST. Also District III Director and Rest Home Director Sid Pokladnik gave a coverage on his line of duty; mainly Of interest were points concerning the rest homes operations and he stated that the Supreme Lodge is not making loans at the present time.

SL President Nick Morris, SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and the editor brought greetings and spoke briefly about the growth and accomplishments of the SPJST. We wish to stress to the membership that the SPJST is known as the fastest growing fraternal insurance society in the United States and Canada, which is accredited to the rank and file members for the past '76 years, and with your consistent loyalty and devotion, we will be number one!

A nice social and entertainment after adjournment, followed by the Rhythm Aires Orchestra furnishing modern and old-time music which concluded an enjoyable evening. We appreciate the courtesy extended to both of us, especially when time allowed to reminisce with some of the members of long standing from the 1948 SPJST Convention to the present date.

Brother John R. Matus, 76, of Route 1, Elm Mott, died Wednesday, September 12th at his home. Funeral services were held Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West, with Rev. George Doskocil as celebrant. Burial was held in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Brother Matus was a member of Lodge No. 54, West.

Joseph Sugarek, 80, passed away in the nursing home in San. Antonio, on August 27. Funeral services were held from Roy Akers Funeral Chapel, with burial in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Brother Sugarek was a member of Lodge 133 Brother Joe Novosad, member of Lodge 133 San Antonio, passed away September 12, in Arkansas.

Newsbriefs Pomykal-Plasek Reunion The Pomykal-Plasek family reunion will be held on October 14 at the Wesley Brethren Church Fellowship Hall.

There will be a basket lunch spread for the noon meal. The worship service will be held at 10:45 a.m. in the Brethren Church.

Repka Reunion The Repka, family reunion will be held at SPJST Lodge No. 88, located on 1435 Beall Street in Houston. -on Sunday, October 7th. We are anticipating a large attendance. * * • Wesley School Reunion All teachers and ex-students of the Wesley School are invited to the Homecoming at the SPJST Hall in Bleiblerville on September 30th. CONNIE HRNCIR LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN Dear Supreme Lodge Officers and Friends of the SPJST: Words can't express the gratitude and honor I felt when receiving the $250 scholarship at the State YAD an September 9. How very nice that having the fun of a youth dubber could bring this extra reward! I have gained so much from just being a part of the SPJST. This scholarship is another one of its individual benefits.

The scholarship will be of immense help when I attend college. Presently, I'm hoping to enroll at Texas Christian University next year.

Serving time at our district meeting is 11:30 a.m. All donations of pastries will be appreciated. If you wish, you may bring them by the lodge Saturday afternoon. We also need dressing. The rest of the food has been purchased; all we need is someone to help prepare it by serving time and help serve. Brothers, you can ha y e your choice, you may help serve food or drinks. In fact, members, if each one would donate one hour to helping out that day, we could all enjoy ourselves and not put the work off on just a few.

We had a belated birthday surprise for our President Brother Malek, September 8th. Sister Malek was in on the surprise, but she also had a nice surprise, we presented a rosebud corsage to Bro. Malek for her. Everyone had a great time and the Voldan's Polka Dots of Houston put out some good music.

You are missing some good time by not attending our dance. We are engaging some good bands. There is one change of dance date: Ray Malek and Sidewinders will play October 20.

At this meeting we were happy to have a newly-married couple, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Milek, and we hope they will become active in the lodge.

After the meeting, the membership enjoyed a social. Special thanks to Mrs. Coleman Benner and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pajestka for preparing the meal. We were pleased to have Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Sefeik and family stop by on their way home from the State YAD to visit with us. We hope they will come and visit with us again.

We elected Mrs. Otis Beck as our reporter at our meeting. I hope that our sales representative will contact those who have been wanting to take new policies with us real soon; it makes me feel real good to see sc many young people joining the new lodge (Lodge 177), also the youth club is getting so large, I know Sis. Pat Tomastik and Sister Jo Harrison, will do a real good job with the youth.

It would be nice for our lodge members to encourage more local youth to join as soon as possible.

Our next lodge meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 9th at the Dragway Park with some special refreshments prepared for all; be there for good fraternal fellowhip!

Secretary Erwin Holy then read the minutes of the previots meeting; they were approved after minor corrections. Correspondence followed.

Youth Leader Sister Helen Zabransky, gave a report on the youth and YAD. She announced that two youth club members placed at State YAD in Taylor. They were Annie Zabransky — 2nd in Science and Educational, ages 13-14; Laurie Chudej -- 3rd in Hobby Kits, ages( 6-9. Ronnie Sevcik entered in Handicraft, ages 10-12.

Congratulations to these youth and all the youth for the wonderful work they are doing.

Family Day, which was held in August, was discussed and reports given.

The day was a success and enjoyed by all who attended.

Other business was brought up before the membership and discussed.

Refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned. Refreshments and lunch were served.

August and September birthdays were honored. Members present with August birthdays were Laurie Chudej, Patsy Zabransky, Otto Holy, Gary Chudej and Erwin Holy. Those members present with September birthdays were Arlene Zak, Hilmer and Gary Galetka, Tracy Trlica, Mrs. Joe Dornak, Vivian Vasek, and Ronnie Sevcik.

Dear Members, Our past monthly meeting was held on Sunday following the September 2nd formal dedication of our recreational building - - Lodge 74. Brother Fred Michka led us in the pledge of allegiance to out flag. Brother Rudy Hafner gave a silent prayer. Sister Dorothy Smith read the minutes of the last meeting.

We enjoyed having new members present during the meeting: Mr. Mize, band teacher of Lovelady and Mrs. J. L. Jordon (formerly of Lovelady), now living in Crockett.

Our memories are so pleasant of the formal dedication because it was enjoyed by so many from big cities who came over from great distances to sup port our new lodge awakening and as it was stated: "We'll want to come back every opportunity we have." All our brothers and sisters want to thank each and everyone of you who took a part in our celebration. The afternoon music was real good, also the wonderful rendition of "God Bless America" by Mrs. Monk, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. AlcLain. The Prune Song (Svestkova alej)) in Czech by Editor Rudy Sefcik and Brother Rudy Hefner, who are two happy people, was rea'-ly the highlight of the afternoon program; also the Czech costumes which added a special attraction, and we thank all of you for the special effort for wearing same on that unforgotten beautiful day for everyone of us to reminisce about.

President R. Hafner read off the list of all the contributions of money, time and work done by so many which is greatly appreciated. The clean-up committee, kitchen committee led by Sister Hefner, intertainment committee chairman, and the ones tending in the bar, are all good workers. It's a good outlook for the future. Our dances are wellattended every Saturday night; the music must be liked by everyone because the crowds are getting bigger and it seems necessary for another expansion, which was discussed during the last meeting, voted and seconded to expand 20x50 feet for more youth and recreational activities.

We have 58 new members since July who were all approved by our membership. Brother David Moore is on the board of trustees with Brothers George Char- aza and Buddy Meinen until new

VtSTNiK afficers will be elected in 1974. Sister Gloria Blackstone is on the committee with Brothers David Moore and Buddy Meinen. Brother Edward Olsen is in charge of the bar and is doing excellent work in handling the refreshments.

The ones I can rememeer donating pot plants were Dr. Muaray, Sister Edith Charanza, and Neil's Groceries.

There are more beautiful pot plants which were donated by interested people, and I will let you all know as soon as I find out their names. Brother David Blackstone, Sister Betty Moore and Sister Ann Lackey donated things for the nursery room. Sister Annie Green donated a bible, podium and flag in memory of her mother; Sister Green also, brought some very useful trays for the kitchen, plus she helped so much in the kitchen. Brother and Sister Hafner's daughter and son-in-law are always helpful in the kitchen and they are also our members who reside Huntsville. Sister Faye Campbell really takes interest in helping out in every way she possibly can; she also lives in Huntsville; she is my niece, and the daughter of Brother and Sis ter Chester Shmoldas. .My life-time friends from Dallas: A. Prikryl, Rose and Toni Koncak, the Ornelinas all donated money which was really appreciated and it was a pleasure seeing so many attend and parti cipate at the dedication. The beautiful plaque is just wonderful to have in our lodge home: it was given to the hardworking and dedicated people: Brother and Sister R. J. Hafner and Brother and Sister Chester Shmoldas, plus numerous other members.

The long speech by SL President Nick Morris is very educational and nice to have in our records. An humble thanks 'for all your efforts in making our growth seen and heard; also to our editor, Brother Rudy Sefcik and his wife Maxine in their helpful ways publishing all the necessary letters and articles for many months before our dedication.

It realty is great to have a recreational place to go to for clean fun where you can associate with nice people who are interested in building a strong community. I have heard so many comments: "It's the best thing that could have happened in Houston County," and "It's essential for our youth and adults to have a nice recreation building to enjoy the togetherness."

Also I want to comment on the enjoyable write-up in Czech by Miss Anezka Houdkova of Dallas about our

Wednesday, September 28, 1973 formal opening. We were indeed happy to have had the opportunity to meet her personally and so glad to see all of you come from Dallas.

Don't forget our forthcoming monthly meeting which will be held Sunday, October 7th at the same time as usual.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Lodge President E. J. Hanka convened the September meeting at 7:30 p. m. on September 9 and Flag Bearer Linn Lesak presented the colors , and led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. The members then stood in respect to the memory of Brother Frank Elsik.

President Hanka then named 2nd Vice President Jeannette Walkoviak to fill the vacancy of the offiee of 1st vice president. The meeting was then opened for nominations to fill the office of 2nd vice president. Brother Harley Cox was nominated and elected as 2nd vice president by acclamation.

The secretary read the minutes from the August meeting, which were approved as read, and the names of 47 applicants for membership and 2 social member applicants. All applicants were approved.

She reported that the State YAD at Taylor was a success and requested the youth who won trophies to come forward and be recognized. The members responded with applause. The names of youth participants will appear in the Vestnik in another section and are not repeated here. Sister Wanda Kennedy made a motion to have the names of the Beseda group, who won first place, to inscribe their names on the trophy.

Motion seconded and approved.

Following the usual and favorable financial reports, Entertainment Committee Chairman Leander Pflughaupt reported on the various social activities and entertainment planned. Birthday Club Sisters' President Wanda Kennedy advised the members that the club sponsors a card party on the first Wednesday and the meeting on the second Wednesday and invited the sisters to attend.

Brother T. S. Kostom extended an invitation to attend the English play to be presented on September 16. (Addendum: The play was highly successful and the Chandelier Ballroom was filled to capacity.) The Choral group has been rehearsing and a major project is planned for this group.

District V Sales Representative Eve lyn Mikeska reported that Sales Representative Frank Dolezal won first place and Sales Representative Patsy Baca won second place. She noted that the National Fraternal Congress will meet in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 24, 25, 26 and requested as many members as possible to attend.

Brother Hanka reported that the SPJST is recognized by the congress as one of the fastest growing fraternal Orders in the United States and Canada.

District Youth Counselor Marlene Caraway reported that the Taylor YAD was highly successful and much youth talent was evident. Lodge 88 Youth Leader Louise Knapick was named one of the top ten youth leaders in the state. Sister Caraway particularly emphasized the date of September 23 at Lodge 88. On this date, the State Royally coronation and program will be held.

On October 7 at the District V meeting, the youth will sponsor sales and other forms of fund raising projects and the proceeds will be divided thutstly: ta Rest Home No. I; 14 to Rest Home No. II; 14 to youth clubs participating; and 1/4 to District V Youth Club.

Lodge Historian Birdie Hilsher reported that the U of H Czech course has

October 6 will see Johnny Sebetka's Polka Peppermints at our lodge; Saturday night, October 13, a special Knights of Columbus dance will be held featuring, for the first time in Fort Worth, the music of Harold Strand and his orchestra of Waco-West Bro Joe Leean asks that everyone who can make it, will be welcome at the Czech Day at the Dallas State Fair on Sunday, Catcher 7. Activities begin at 10 a. m. and last until 9 p. m. that evening.

If you know of any good prospective members, please refer them to one of our sales representatives; your help will be appreciated. Our lodge has endured far 63 years and its anniversary was on September 4, with a continual influx of new members we should be ready for

another 63 years of progress.

NO. 177, ACADEMY Dear Members, Hello from Lodge 177 Academy!

We held our meeting September 3rd under the stars at the Dragstrip — what a wonderful turnout! Although we have no lodge building as yet, we still had a very good attendance. All new members present were welcomed.

During this meeting, the membership decided to name our lodge, Lodge Academy. Until we have a building to hold our meetings and other activities, our meetings temporarily will be held at the Temple Academy Dragstrip. At this meeting, lodge President Jerry Tomastik announced that a race would be held at the Academy Dragstrip on Thanksgiving Day, and proceeds, after expenkes, deducted, will be donated , to the Lodge 177 building fund. More details on this subject later.

We are a new lodge but, with the help of our good members, we hope to be a big lodge soon. At this time, we would also like to take this opportunity to thank Brother Lad Zatopek for his help and advise.

This is my first letter to the Vestnik since I was elected reporter of our lodge, so please bear with me because I hope to improve.

Names in the News: One of our members, Ruth Duncan, was one of the famous actors in "Alibi Bill" the hilarious comedy that was thorou ghly enjoyed by hundreds of guests from near and far; Ruth was just great and if a Hollywood scout would have been there, I am afraid we would have lost a club member -- also some lodge members!

Two of our sisters had daughters in this play: Susan Schenburn, daughter of Mary and Louis Schenburn, and Frances Vala„ daughter of Annie Vela; both were also great actresses, as was every one in the play! Another one of our members, Rosalee Kostom, had charge of the many tickets sold, so our club was well represented. It surely was good to see one of our dear club sisters, Sister Ida Hnnka,, whom we have been mssing at some of our activities. Louise Kadlecek got over her major surgery so quickly that it was hard to believe she had been in the ficpital!

Don't forget our card party and luncheon on the tirst and second Wednesday of the month; the meeting is on the second Wednesday.

The pledge of allegiance was led by youth Darrin and Eddie Banik and Jerry Pavelka. ivlinutes were read by Secretary Albert Banik, and were approved. He also read correspondence from Convention Chairman Otto Hanus, and thank-you notes from the Alton Pratka family and John Hen family.

Our sympathy is extended to Bro. William liejl on the loss of his Mother. She was a sister of several of our members.

VtSTNtK Treasurer Henry Breitkreutz, Jr., gave his report, after which each chairman gave their various reports.

Under old business it was decided to have Lodge 35 ask for the District III spring meeting.

Under new business it was voted on to give the floor chairman authority to raise the admission charge, and to let the board of trustees check into the feasability of installing a walk-in vault, and make arrangement to have the lodge's outside wall painted.

A committee was selected to check into convention plans. Ernest Banik, Helen Dulock and Gene Edward Pavelka were appointed to the Nominating Committee; so if any of you members are interested in any office, please make it known to the Nominating Committee.

New members accepted were: Robert Jason Kirk, Billie Denise Massey, Doris Mildred Yarborough, Steven Wayne Yarborough. We welcome them into our lodge, and hope they enjoy being a part of us.

Edwin Armstrong purchased an additional policy.

We were happy to have with us visitors Pauline Culverhouse and Ernest Clemmons.

It was reported that Brother. Ed. Pavelka of Terrell had surgery. We all certainly wish him a speedy recovery.

Texas and neighboring states will take over the Fair Grounds for the special day.

The noble and stately Beseda Dance will appear in the Coliseum, Mobil Stage and Women's Building.

It will be the largest of Beseda Circles on the Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas.

A new number "The Texas Roundup" sponsored by the Sokol Southern District. In addition to the Texas Round-Up, the Sokols will give us a nice exhibition. Don't miss it.

Choral Groups from Ennis, Seaton and Taylor will entertain you with good songs. The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra will entertain you with good music during the Czech Day program in the Coliseum. Be sure and see the Czech Day program in the Coliseum.

In the tradition of the Czech Days, the oldest lady and gentleman in attendance will reign as Queen and King for the day, and will receive a trophy. A trophy also will be presented to the oldest married couple.

At this time I want to congratulate District II for being the first district in the state to meet their quota. District V is short $40,500 of meeting its quota, so all of you sales representatives get busy. Go out and do someone a good deed and give a helping hand; don't fall asleep at your jobs and fail to help someone who needs your services. Wake up and brush off your briefcases and get active again!

Here is a real important date to circle: October 7, 1973; make plans to come out to our fall District V meeting. The host lodge is Lodge 172, Pasadena. The address is 911 E. Shaw. It is easy to find, just two blocks off the 225 freeway. Take the Tatar St. exit, turn left under the freeway, and go two blocks and turn left again. It is right there on the corner of the shopping center. There will be a good dinner served with turkey, dressing, potatoes, peas, sausage, sauerkraut, coffee or tea, all for only $2 for adults and $1.50 for children. Any of you ladies who can, please bring some pastry. The District V youth will have Some entertainment for us; come out and support your youth clubs and your district by being present. The district meeting will be short, but it is important for all of us from all the lodges in, the district to be present.

This is part of our duty as SPJST members. Come out and support your district and see what the youth will have for us; there will be a free dance after the meeting, so the whole family can have a day of good fun and fellowship together here. We have 17 lodges in our district, so I want to see you all represented at our fall meeting.

September 2, was a great day to be remembered by all who attended the dedication of the new home of Lodge 74, Lovelady. Just by being there, you could feel the fraternal spirit and enjoy the fellowship with all the brothers and sisters and guests. FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE A Progress Report Dear Members: From time to time I am questioned about the ranking or standing of our lodges, and which ones rank near the top in membership. You may perhaps recall that I prepared a similar teport on this matter in 1969 and that it appeared in the June 11, 1969 issue of the Vestnik. I have again checked our records •here in the Supreme Lodge and come up with some rather interesting statistics. As before, the figures reflect a situation that is quite fluid and that lodge strength and status is changing almost constantly.

In the accompanying table, you will see the lodge strength of the top ten lodges in our Society as of August 1, 1973, and as compared to the last report which included figures as of April 1, 1969. Study this table well Here are the salient bits of information from this study: a. Lodge 88 hi Houston continues to show the biggest gain in membership during this period. b. In second place. Lodge 66,, Waco shoved the second highest gain. (This is particularly interesting since in 1969, Lodge 66 did not even rank among the top ten lodges in the Society). In this listing,. Lodge No. 66 ranks fourth.

Also, this represents a gain of 100 percent, since it doubles what it was in 19G9! c. Lodge 47, Seaton ranks third in gain of membership during this period, with 130 members gained. Lodge 47

VESTNIK ranks third in overall membership in this report, -and ranked third in 1969. _ d One lodge -- Lodge 81, Needville, while still among the top ten in the Society, showed the smallest gain during this period, and dropped from 7th place to 9th place. e. Lodge 28, East Bernard, showed up as ranking tenth in the report in 1969, but does not appear among the tap ten lodges in this new listing. f. lodge 154 in Fort Worth dropped in rank 4th place in 1969 to 6th in this listing. g. Three of these lodges showed losses in the 1969 listing -- Lodges 24, 17, and 28: two of these, however, show gains in this listing -- Lodges 24 and 17. h. Percentagewise, Lodge 74, Lovelady, showed the largest gain in our So-iety, having increased slightly over a whopping 1100 percent for this same perod, having gone from a mere 19 members in 1969 to 216 in August of this year!

New Lodges And New Lodge Halls.

So much for our top ten lodges. In addition to the re-activation and new lodge home at Lodge 74, Lovelady, we see other lodges making progress. Lodge 81, Needville, is considering building a new lodge home; so is Lodge 174, Rockdale. We wish these lodges much success! Lodge 142, Houston will be dedicating their new lodge hall on November 18th of this year.

A new lodge was recently organized in Academy, south of Temple, in District. II. New lodges are contemplated in Burleson in Johnson County south of Ft. Worth (District III) and in the Longview-Kilgore area in Gregg County in East Texas, also to be in District HI. We hope the plans for these new lodges materialize. Other lodges in one area are considering merger to strengthen their membership, unity, and resources. We must also salute those lodges that have witnessed considerable increases in membership after several years of dormancy, due to active and hard-working sales representatives.

All of these efforts indicate progress.

While these progressive efflorts are taking place, however, there are those lodges that either can't make any headway for various reasons and those that can't seem to make any progress for various reasons. Among the latter group, there are those lodges situated in out of-the-way places and there is no influx of prospective new members.

Chances are, the young have also left the community and moved to the big cities. There are also lodges that really

don't care to acquire new members because it would result in more work for the officers of the lodge; they are content to remain just as they are.

Then there are lodges that write an occasional new member or so to replace those who die and pass on, in other words, they are barely holding their own, without any substantial progress,.

Of course, when there is very little or no progress, one of two things is happening: Either you are standing still or you are going backward.

Finally, it must be said that those lodges that have nice lodge halls seem to show the greatest progress and enthusiasm among, their membership. This is perfectly natural because people like to have a nice place to congregate, meet with their friends, and socialize in general. ((Witness the very good growth at Lodge 74, Lovelady, over a period of just a few months.) A lodge hall also leads to more intense activity on the part of the lodge because of the upkeep and maintenance necessary to keep the lodge hall in good shape. This, in itselft contributes to a lot of the activity around lodge halls. It must also be said that those lodges having progressive-minded officers make their lodge meetings and carrying on of lodge business more enjoyable and attractive to the membership. Where this is not the case, the membership loses interest and eventually falls apart. Operating on the lodge system, which includes lodge meetings, is the backbone of the organizational structure of our Society and must be maintained.

We are grateful to, and must recognize the service of, those many officers and members who contribute much of thei • time and efforts in making our local lodges -a going concern", for without them we would not be able to make the progress that has been made.

It has also been found that in those lodges not having youth clubs there is not as much progress generally. It appears that those lodges having youth clubs have a lot more activity that draws the adult membership and younger people into its ranks. In short, where there is a youth club, you will find an active and progressive lodge.

One naturally follows and complements the other. We sometimes hear members complain about the lack of interest on the part Of the younger people, but is there ever anything done in that lodge to attract young people and make them want to participate or possibly hold office in the lodge?

These final thoughts: The late Christopher Morely observed that if we had only five minutes left to say all we wanted to say on this earth, every telephone booth would be occupied by people calling other people to stammer that they loved them. Why wait until the last five minutes?

Dorothy Massey, SYD —SPJSTRE-CAP OF THE STATE YAD Taylor High School Dear Members: The talent, craft, and Beseda portion of the State YAD was a success this year due to the beautiful crafts displayed and the quality of the talent and Beseda. I regret very much about the weak participation from District IV but we were glad to have the entries that were there. 1 feel that if everyone from District IV who was qualified to participate at this year's YAD would have been there, our overall attendance would have been greater than previous years.

However, this year we did have 163 contestants with 236 entries.

Let me take this opportunity to congratulate everyone who participated, but especially the winners and hopefully next year, the ones who did not take home any of the awards will be listed among the winners. A "production" of this kind could not take place without the help, encouragement, and cooperation of many adults who helped put it on. Many thanks to all of you who have helped make

We came home with some first place winners; our poster won first place. I must give those who worked on it credit for doing such a nice job. Lisa Priesmeyer won first place on her piano solo in the 10-12 age category, and Rosann Dorotik won first place in craft.

The youth, with the help of the assistants, are busy working on craft in their spare time and they are also kept busy in school.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, October 7th at the same time as usual. Plans for the District VI fall meeting will be made; notice the District VI meeting in East Bernard, will begin at 2 p.m. instead of 1 p. m. as previously indicated.

Remember: at the youth club meeting, there will be the October birthday celebrants honored with a party; so come all and wish them a happy birthday. See you October 7th!

I am so proud of this new youth club because we are having lots of fun and are meeting new friends and accomplishing new things together. I would like to give the names of our new club members: Larry Melina, Eddy Melina, Stanley Melina, Susie IVfalina, Debbie Melina, David Masser, Mary Harrison, Diana Harrison, Terry Bland, Lori Bland, Dean May, Pattie Silvers, Bobby Poncik, Michael Poncik, Ebby Ashby, Chappel Ashby, Keith Barnes, George Tomastik, David Tomastik, Clifford Tomastik, Bobby Tomastik, and Jimmy Ashby.

Before the meeting, we played games and it was such a joy to see all these young people having a good time. Afterward we served ice cold watermelon. In fact after each social, we plan to have some kind of refreshments; so all of you try to attend the next youth club meeting which will be held October 9th at

V2STN±K 7 p.m., at the Dragstrip; in case of bad weather, it will be held at my home.

On Saturday, September 15, we had a skating party for the Juniors and Teens. There were eight youth club members and four new members attending our bowling since the last club meeting. All of them reported a great time, and at the skating party, we had ten youth members skating; this was indeed a good turnout for the September social. I also enjoyed it very much and, of course, a big THANK YOU to the parents, for their help with the youth to the bowling alley and to the skating rink.

Also I owe a gratitude of thanks to everyone who bought a ticket on the beautiful AM-FM radio; the winning ticket went to Jimmy Spanhel of Temple. We made money and this gave the youth a great opportunity to learn something about the selling ability, and how to make the correct change. They worked on this project and did very well. Wednesday, September 26, 1973 its monthly meeting September 16 at the Grant Building.

President Annie Zabransky called the meeting to order. Ronald Sevcik called the roll since Secretary Sandra Holy was absent. Sharon Miculka read her report, followed by the reading of the minutes from the previouS meeting.

A discussion followed on old business about State YAD. We came home with two third place winners and one in 2nd place.

Under new business, we discussed a party. We decided to have a wiener roast.

Recognition was given, to our new members, Janelle Chudej and Denise Vasek. Then the meeting adjourned.

Afterward the mother ledge held their meeting. Door prizes went to the following: Adult — Tracy Trlica; child — Sharon Miculka; August birthday cake — Otto Holy; September birthday cake — Tracy Trlica.

Our next meeting will be held October 14th.

At our youth meeting, we discussed having a wiener roast. Arrangements are to be made by a committee consisting of Annie Zabransky, David Zak and Ronald Sevcik. We also discussed the fact that our Family Day money-making projects were a success, and the State YAD. The four members who attended gave a brief explanation of the events which took place.

After both meetings, lunch and refreshments were served. Door prizes went to: Tracy Trlica — adult; Sharon Miculka — youth. The August birthday cake was awarded to Otto Holy; September birthday cake — Tracy Trlica.

Dear Readers, Last Sunday, Sep. 9th we held our youth club meeting at Wall Fire DepaAtment. We discussed many things in our meeting. Before our meeting, we went to the mother lodge meeting, My uncle, Brother Laddie So cha, was presiding 'as president during the meeting, which was short.

In the youth club meeting, we decided to go to Gandy's and Sonora Caverns. The youth leader will call us about the time and the date.

We had two visitors: Mr. and Mrs. Smith, from Waco, and Doctor Peter of Czechoslovakia; he came here in 1968, and said that his family is still in Czechoslovakia. Everybody enjoyed his talk.

21 LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Members and Friends, At our last meeting we honored nine queens and nine duchesses. Our youth club has been existing for 15 years and we felt that it was only right that we honor these special people. Ten of the past winners of our princess ball were present.

Also, we must remember the people who advise us. A big THANK YOU to the past youth leaders and assistants and to everyone who helped with our projects and socials.

Fourteen youth from our club attended State YAD which was held at Taylor High School, Sunday. September 9. Our club was honored with a plaque, for being one of the top ten clubs of the state. The plaque was presented to Betty Slovak who was youth leader for the past 11/2 years.

Lodge 66 will hold its next meeting on Sunday, September 30th.
