OUR STATE YAP OBSERVATIONS AND COMMENTS

The efforts of the State Youth Achievement Day committees and leaders undoubtedly helped in many ways to almost fill the Taylor High School auditorium to capacity on the day of September 9th, 1973. Each year the entire youth program is carefully screened and much consideration is given to every detail for a bigger and better SPJST program by the Youth Department and the seven District Youth Counselors, Some attractions were added to this year's SYAD program: two young people, Patsy Kalina, a retired State Queen of Lodge 58, and Paul Pokladnik, a youngster of Lodge 84 who developed interest in leadership, both emceed certain portions of the program. A featured attraction included several Taylor High School students rendering a few songs.

A welcome was extended to the assembly by State Director Dorothy Massey before the large-scale competition commenced. The competition opened with two circles of Beseda dancers from Lodges 84 and 88, followed by individual and group talent competition in the four-age categories with good quality and were of high standard. During the talent competition, there were judges carefully judging and making decisions at the numerous arts and crafts which were beautifully displayed in the epacicus high school.

When the final hour arrived for the results, the presentation of awards, by Sister Dorothy Massey, went quickly to many happy recipients. The highlight of the program was the $250 Scholarship presentation. This achievement is the highest and most difficult award to achieve for any youngster within a 3-y0 ar period of consistent activities in the Society. SL President Nick Morris pointed out the rules of the scholarship and included his congratulatory remarks to the recipient Connie Hrncir of Lodge 117. Robs-

Wednesday, September 10, 1973 town, who graciously accepted the honor which will aid her in achieving a higher education. The challenge Connie will face, will be most demanding, and the SPJST feels gratified in helping the achiever to mold her future. May it be a happy one!

The representation at the occasion was well represented by members from every district who came and gave their strong support to the youth of our Society; a large representation of Lodge 88 members came by bus and several in cars to boost their participants. There is no doubt that the youth feel they have something they can be proud of and know their efforts were not in vain. From our vast audience, the comments of the event were wellearned and gave all who worked for the day, a feeling of satisfaction upon the successful completion of our task — the State Youth Achievement Day. To all the youth at the state competition: we give a fine salute! We express our congratulations to all the winners: and to the other participants: we commend you very highly on your good sportsmanship!

For many months preceding the event, numerous people are involved, as well as during the day in a large undertaking that keeps the operations moving smoothly, and they deserve our praise for their efforts.

Those of you who were in attendance, will concur that it was an enjoyable afternoon well-spent witnessing so many contestants in their colorful costumes who performed with great courage and wisdom. The State YAD was probably the biggest ever held with approximately three hundred youngsters ranging from 6 through 17 years of age. When they assembled on the huge stage at the Taylor High School, these young folks made a beautiful panorama for the SPJST Society.

Whenever you hear an expression in your daily life: "We are spending too much money on our young folks," disregard it and advise the person otherwise. If anyone would visualize what all is put forth into a worthy project (working with the youth), then they would have to concur with us that too much money is not spent for young people, especially when money is spent wisely and appreciated.

We have always recognized the good deeds in people who work closely with the youth, especially those who

(Other photos by editor). are in the teaching profession field that motivates interest in young people in order for them to become dreamers and a necessity to their community; where a youngster is given an opportunity for creative growth and expression. We like to refer to the youth of our SPJST as "creative people" who are idea explorers and original thinkers who tend to have imaginations and like to dream with the thought of having some type of arts and crafts on exhibition. Actually, we like to emphasize that they are the people in our Society who make things meaningful and beautiful. An example of this factor was witnessed at the recent SYAD. Oftentimes we feel that children are dreamers and possess imaginations until adults force the demands of reality on them. However, there are ways of allowing a child to dream and still develop a sense of reality.

A child specialist will also agree that children should be allowed to find out for themselves what will — or will not — work. With children, as with adults. we know that much of the meaning in new thought is developed through exploration and experimentation.

For many years now, the children of the SPJST have been provided

3 with needed materials and an opportunity for creative experimentation through their active local lodges. Numerous of these materials are used for arts and crafts; others are used from odds and ends by donations to the youth clubs. Most of us should be aware of keeping this in mind when helping a child participate in competition: "If a child does not become a winner, failure is often a valid learning experience. Creative exploration can be encouraged, also a child's efforts should be valued, never ridiculed."

Remember: "creative people" are selfconfident; they believe in themselves and their abilities; they may not be positive they can finish a task, but they are usually willing to try. Children are often independent and prefer to do things on their own. They show a good ideal of autonomy and selfreliance.

Now that we have made a few comments, we want to remind you of another forthcoming State Youth Achievement Day: the State Royalty Pageant which will be held September 23rd in Houston at Lodge 88. (A complete program for your information and map are published in this issue). We hope to see the six district candidates represented at the state royalty competition. Our very best is wished to all of them' The host lodge committees promise to have a rich program and a delicious menu in store for you. Don't let this opportunity pass you by: be there and be a strong SPJST supporter. We would like to see another step up the ladder for the best State Royalty Pageant!

vacationing in New Orleans, Louisiana and in Blytheville, Arkansas, where they spent a few days with their son, Lt. Larry Kruse, who is stationed at the Blytheville Air Force Base. * * Brother Ignac Senkyrik, 92, passed away in a nursing home in El Campo on Wednesday, September 12. Fthneral services were held on Friday, September 14, from St. Phillips Catholic Church in El Campo. Brother Senkyrik was a member of Lodge No. 50, El Campo, and was a very prolific organizer (sales representative) for many years in his younger days. The Supreme Lodge of the SPJST was represented by Vice President Brother Toe B. Hejny at the funeral services.

Mrs. Limie A. Kosarek, 87, formerly of Corpus Christi, more recently of Taylor, passed away in the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor, Friday, September 7. Funeral services were held Monday, September 10 from. HarperTalasek Funeral Home in Temple, with burial in the Seaton Cemetery.

Sister Kosarek was a member of Lodge No 47, Seaton.

and graduate degrees during morning commencement exercises. The college has granted 6,057 degrees since its founding in 1881.

Dr. Leonard puce, graduate dean at Trinity University in San Antonio, delivered the summer commencement address in the college auditorium, on Sunday, August 12th, 1973.

Joan (Pavliska) Stephen is remembered as the Miss SPJST at the 1968 Convention in Waco. Her picture was on the cover of the XXIst Convention issue. The Pavliska family are all active members of the SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville. Sister Maxine Pavliska is the District VII Youth Counselor.

John Michael Pavliska As John Michael Pavliska takes the throne to reign as King Reboog XXIX of the 1973 Peanut Festival over half of a century of family heritage in 'peanut farming will accompany him.

It was in the early 1920's that John's grandfathers, Mr. John Pavliska and the late Mr. Virgil E. Lamberth, planted their first crops of peanuts. Mr. Pavliska was one of the first owners and operators of a pea nut thrasher in Wilson County and, with that start, the Pavliska name became deeply embedied in the peanut raising industry.

John has more than just a heritagal interest in peanut farming, for he too raises peanuts. John has pea-

nut acreage of his own as well as working with his ifather and his brother Billy in a family enterprise.

John will be a senior at Floresville High School in the fall. With this proud heritage he adds numerous personal accomplishment such as playing the trumpet with the 1973 Sweepstakes winning band, a former member of the Beta Club, a former member of the Speech Club, and winning awards and honors in district and state art competition sponsored by the SPJST Youth Club.

John finds that raising peanuts demands much of his time but when he finds leisure moments he likes to spend them swimming, water skiing, playing tennis, and trampoling.

John is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Pavliska of Floresville. He is the youngest of the three Pavliska. children. With John's graduation in May 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Pavliska can look back and be proud of the achievements that their three children have made. For a family that has dedicated a life time to the peanut industry the crowning of John as King Reboog XXIX in October will be an honor for the whole family, and an honor that will be cherished by all.

As John leaves high school he stands on the threshold of manhood.

John, as well as the other young people of his class, steps out into the world with more of a voice and say in the government that rules their lives.

John is undecided about what he will do after high school but it is certain that he will carry on the fine family heritage that has preceded his.

To John Michael Pavliska, King Reboog XXIX, congratulations and good luck.

Flag bearers were Nicholas Morris and Dewayne Mesecke. They led the assembly in the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

A moment of silence was held in memory of Brother Dennis J. Bartek, a longtime member , worker and sales representative. May we honor his memory, always. Sincere sympathy to his bereaved family.

Visitors at the meeting were Brother Otto and Sister Evelyn Mikeska of Lodge No. 88, Houston. Sister Mikeska is also the District V Sales Representative. We certainly enjoyed having you as visitors and do come again. Also, Sister Arlene Wood, Brothers Bruce Wood and William McIver were all recognized as being at a lodge meeting for the first time.

I hope you felt welcome and make attending meetings a habit. Thanks for attending.

Sister Bolton read the minutes of the August 9th meeting and these were approved as read. She read the correspondence, which included the mortuary dues from the Supreme Lodge, a thank you card from the family of Dennis J. Bartek for the flowers, a thank you from District II Sales Representative Lad J. Zatopek for the use of the hall for a sales meeting, an invitation from Lodge No. 87, Temple, to their picnic on October 7th and an invitation from Lodge No. 88, Houston, to their English play on September 16, and to the State YAD, Royalty, to be held on September 23rd.

The following were listed on the

VtSTNIK sick list: Sister Vlosta Divist, an ex-youth leader, who is seriously ill at Scott and White Memorial Hospital, and also Brother John Maruna.

We are hoping that you both will return to good health, again, soon.

New members accepted during the meeting are as follows: adults — Ora Belle Helms, Calvert Garland Helms, Lydia L. Psencik, William Donald Woodliff, Sr., Jim Neal Haley, and William Otis McIver (present at the meeting) and juveniles — William Oliver McIver and Lisa Kay Hoelscher. Transfers in from Lodge No. 24 were Walter Glen Urbach, Sr., Helen Ida Urbach and Janelle Donna (Pornykal) Novosad. A sincere welcome to all those named, and here's hoping they will take an active part in lodge activities.

Reports were given by the officers and the chairmen. Board minutes were read by Sister Lillian Kosarek.

The next meeting was set for the second Sunday, October 14th, at 2 p.m. We will have a giblet supper and the Happy Hour after adjournment. Then Brother Calvin Chervenka, assisted by Brother David Mikeska, will show slides taken in Czechoslovakia while they studied Czech at Charles University in Praha, for six weeks. They will have narrations with the slides. This should be very interesting for the young and old. The exact time will be in the SPJST Calendar, so watch for the announcement, there and, also in Sister La Verne Vanicek's report because the youth club is sponsoring the slides as a project for October.

A committee to set the salaries for the officers in 1974 was chosen and they are: Emil J. Heji, Robert Vasicek and Leslie Mesecke. The nominating committee will be appointed in the next meeting. The Rules and Regulations Committee consists of Albin Sodek, Martha Klusacek, Calvin Chervenka, Gladys Marek, Robert Vasicek, Jerry Mtkulas, Jr., and Emily Stutevile.

Sister La Verne Vanicek gave the youth leader's report which included 20 juniors present and 12 teens, 3 adults and 1 new member, Scott Wood. The socials are skating on September 17th for the juniors and either go to the go-cart track or bowling on September 16th. These will have taken place before this report is read. She also reminded everyone to support the youth at State YAD at Taylor on September 9th and the State Royalty on September 23rd

5 at Houston Lodge 88. The project for this month is decorating for the barn dance on September 15th with the assistance of the adults. The filter cleaning is also scheduled for that Saturday. On October 13th, the youth club will go to Six Flags Over Texas.

The club is paying the bus fare and half of each ticket. The mother lodge voted to pay the other half of the ticket for the active youth club members.

Brother Clarence Sodek, treasurer, reported that the final payment was paid on the pledge to the King's Daughters Hospital Building Fund.

Also, he presented a thank you he had received from Lodge 74, to Sister Bolton to read. They had erroneously credited the Lodge 47 donation to him personally.

Premium refund checks were read

by Sister Bolton. The door prize winners were: Emil J. Ha and Eleanor Spanhel. Then we adjourned and enjoyed a snack and the happy hour.

The formal dedication of Lodge 74 Lovelady was really nice. The program included the address by SL President Nick Morris who stressed the lodge's beginning and, now, its re-activation.

He also presented a plaque to Brother Rudy and Sister Alice Hafner and Brother Chester and Bertha Shmoldas as a reward for all their efforts.

They said this plaque will be displayed at the hall. The members from our lodge present were: Brother Frankie and Sister Irma Klinkovsky and their son, Frankie, Jr., (Dist. II King) and Brother Alfred and Sister Martha Klusacek, Brother Jerry Pechal and me (his wife) and our children Joyce and David. The music by the bands the Texas Dutchmen and the Blumes was certainly enjoyed by all. Continued success to Lodge 74, Lovelady!

The State YAD at Taylor on September 9th was well attended. Congratulations to all of the winners and a "well done" to the losers. The competition was real keen.

Remember to support the state royalty. District II Queen Roseanne Martine of Lodge No. 20 Granger and District II King Frankie Klinkovsky, Jr., of Lodge 47 will be our representatives. Good luck to you both.

CHORAL CLUB

Dear Readers: After a long vacation we have had the first rehearsal of this fall, Tuesday night, September 11th with the following members present: Fred and Martha Klusacek, Frank and Ellenore Spanhel, Dorothy Pechal, Emily Stuteville, Ruby Bolton. Leon Sodek, Clarence and Wanona Sula, Butch and Georgie Sodek, Calvin Chervenka, Otto and Matilda Harms, Leon and Vallie Zavodny, Johnny and Laverne Vanicek, Willie and Adeline Kohutek, Laurin and Dorothy Gaines, Annie Jakubec, our hard-working director and Ralph Wick our ajccordionist and his lovely wife. We missed several of our good singers and we hope everyone will be present at our next rehearsal Tuesday the 25th of September. We will also have a special rehearsal on Tuesday, October 2nd; this will give us additional opportunity to brush up on our singing which will help most of us after a long vacation, so be sure and attend the next two rehearsals to be In top shape for the State Fair on October 7th.

In a short meeting after our rehearsals, it was decided that we charter a Greyhound bus for our trip. It was also decided to buy special ties for the male members of our club and a committee consisting of Martha Kinsacek, Vallie Zavodny, Dorothy Pechal and Laverne Vanicek to arrange for and select these ties was selected. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.

Please don't forget to be present at our next rehearsal Tuesday September 25th and on time.

LODGE NO. 154, FL WORTH Dear Members,: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our Vice President Wilbur Mason in the absence of our President Jerry Milan.

The pledge of allegiance was recited by all present and everyone stood in a moment of silence in memory of our deceased member, Sister Martha Renfro.

All other officers were present and the minutes and reports were approved as read. Sister Renfro read thank-you notes from the families of our deceased members Eric Koch and Martha Renfro.

Robert Urban from, Lodge 84 in Dallas transferred to our lodge and we make him most welcome.

We were happy to hear Leslie Dalton is now home from the hospital. We extend get-well wishes to Margaret Neely and also to Johnny Kratky of Lodge 92.

Yours truly won the door prize.

We are all saddened by the sudden death of Sister Pauline Mayes, on Monday, September 10th. She was at the meeting (Sunday) and as happy as could be and even thanked us for being so nice to them. She will be missed.

While I was writing this letter, I received a call from Sister Agnes Burge of Corpus Christi. She said she just wanted to tell me how mfuch they enjoy my letters and, I thought that was very nice of her. She is here visiting the son Charlie and family. They are all members of the SPJST. I invited her to come to the Ladies' Circle at Lodge 92 and to our District ra rneelp, and

that pleased her and she will try to attend.

Due to so many activities in October, it was voted to have our next meeting at the regular time in November, so make a note of this.

The next Friendship Club meeting will be held Wednesday, October 3rd at 10:30 a. m., Our next lodge meeting on Sunday, November 11th at 3 p. m.

The following memorial was made to the Building Fund in memory of Sister Renfro: Wilbur and Jeanie Mason $5. Your gift is greatly appreciated.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members, Due to the death of our dear Brother Emil Horelica, our First Vice President, Jeannette Walkoviak took over hi ps duties. Jeannette was a very efficient 2nd Vice President who really was a wonderful reporter for our lodge. Jeannette, I want to thank you for a great job and will do my best to fill this position.

We were happy to have a large group of new members initiated at our monthly meeting on September 10, and hope they will take part in all the lodge functions. Thanks to the Sales Representatives for a good job — Just keep up the good work.

The dance on Saturday, September 8, with Blumes was enjoyed by all. Les Blume and his boys always do such a great job. Thanks, LeS. Sunday, September 23,"State Royalty Day." Dinner consisting of country fried chicken, sausage, and all the trimmings will be served from 11:30 to 1:30.

Following the program, a free dance with music by another great lodge favorite, Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen. This is a big day for a great group of youth and as good members, we should all come out and show our support for them.

Fraternally, Harley Cox —SPJSTLODGE NO. 81, NEEDVILLE Dear Members and Friends, The sunshine did not stay with us very long after the tropical storm Dehlia paid us a visit, as it is very cloudy this morning and its raining. A lot of rain fell during the storm, so the cotton which was ready to pick and the rice to be harvested suffered terribly in this area. My sympathy goes to the farmers who work hard all the year 'round, only to watch their crops go to waste in just a few days.

Our September meeting was opened at 2 p.m. by our President Charlie Matcek. The members recited the pledge of allegiance in unison and stood in silent trihute to our deceased Sister Frances Prilucik who passed away at Polly Ryon Hospital after a long illness. Sister Prilucik was a good member and a loyal friend.

Our sincere sympathy is extended to her husband Frank and the family on the loss of their loved one.

Members reported hospitalized were: Brother Alvin Rech and Sis. Albina Ryza. To both of these members: we wish a speedy recovery.

We want to welcome our new members who are: William Boettcher, Bernice Boettcher, Carol Jean Boettcher and Jeanette Jean Rosenbaum.

Wesley Ed. Rosenbaum. took out additional policy. Mark Allen Janik changed from JT do D. Brothers who trimmed the trees on the premises and cleaned the yard were: Edward Kuban, Charlie Matcek and Bobby Christ. We want to thank these brothers for a job well done.

It was voted to buy a turtle for the Needville Lions Club Carnival that will be held this month on the 20th.

Correction' In my last report I reported as social members Alvin Blinks., Darlene Blinka and Anna Petrielka. It should have read active members, as their certificates are paid up and they took care of their local lodge dues.

The new Building Committee was present and reported on their findings. Brother Gilbert Walzel brought the plans of the proposed building and also some samples of the material to be used. He read to the members, in detail what the plans consisted of.

Judging from his description. it will be beautiful.

Refund checks were distributed and the door prize went to Brother .1ohn Blinka.

A fine lunch was enjoyed by all present. Our next meeting will be October 14, at 2 p.m. I'm hoping to ,ec ou then.

DAY AT THE STATE FAIR OF TEXAS The 33th Anniversary of the Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas will be celebrated October 7th, 1973. The program is scheduled at 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the Coliseum, and will move to the Band-Shell for the afternoon program, and there you will be entertained 9 p.m.

Colorful costumes from Czech communities and Texas-size friendly spirit will be in evidence when thousands of Czechs from all corners of Texas and neighboring states will take over the Fair Grounds for the CZECH

VEST N IC special day, The noble and stately Beseda Dance will appear in the Coliseum, Mobil Stage and Women's Building.

It will be the largest of Beseda Circles on the Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas.

A new number "The Texas RoundUp" sponsored by the Sokol Southern District. In addition to the Texas Round-Up, the Sokols will give us a nice exhibition. Don't miss it.

Choral Groups from Ennis, Seaton and Taylor will entertain you with good songs. The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra will entertain you with good music during the Czech Day program in the Coliseum. Be sure and see the Czech Day program in the Coliseum.

In the tradition of the Czech Days, the oldest lady and gentleman in attendance will reign as Queen and King for the day, and will receive a trophy. A trophy also will be presented to the oldest married couple.

Don't miss the special Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas. October 7th, 1973. It will be the best.

LODGE NO. 32, VICTORIA Dear Readers, The State YAD in Arts, Crafts, Talent and Beseda was held in Taylor, September 9th.

James Vanek was our first place winner in Hobby Kits. He entered a string kit, a picture of an owl. His brother, Dennis, won second in Handicraft. He entered a candlestick holder.

The YAD was well-attended and the unforgettable entries in craft and talent were presented and made by talented hard-working youth.

I am hoping to see the youth put their recipes on food which they entered at State YAD in the Vestnik, because it was all so attractive.

NO. 32, VICTORIA Dear Members, What a grand time held last Saturday at Brother Smajstrla's ranch. The Victoria Youth Club had a hayride and wiener roast with special guests that included the Hillje youth and their parents.

It was grand to see so many present, especially Sister Krauskopth Hilije youth leader and Sister Joanna Schwartzkopf, their past youth leader and, of course, the parents who were so willing to come and help out with the activity.

The country fresh air reminded the adults of their past, living out in the country. The hayrides became a sixmile ride, but we all got slightly wet because of rain showers that came LODGE

LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Members and Readers: The youth club held their meeting September 2nd. We had a nice attendance.

Our picnic at Spivey Crossing on the rive r, was well-attended and everyone had a good time.

On August 24 the youth had a watermelon party. They all ate so much until they couldn't eat anymore.

Sunday, September 9 the State 2'AD Beseda, talent, arts and crafts and points contests were held in Taylor High School. Our youth club had 3 winners. They are: Debbie Uptmor, teenager of the year; Douglas Uptmor, junior of the year: and Willie Mae Schuetz, youth leader of the year.

The youth club won second place.

In craft Karen Hykel placed third.

We had four youth members in the top ten in the state in the point system contest. They are: Carol Dehecka, Margaret Lander, Karen Hykel and Eddie Hykel. I am so proud of all of you club members. Thank you for working with me and my assistant; also the parents for helping and bringing the youth to our craft and socials. It really takes a lot of work and participation.

The youth club is going to Six Flags on the second Sunday in October. We will make more plans in our October meeting.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Teens: Our monthly meeting was wellattended and, due to such a full calendar this month, a social will be held next month.

A fine time was had by all of us who attended State YAD in Taylor.

It is always fun to meeet new people and make new friends.

Congratulations to all our first place winners and to Mrs. Knapick for winning as one of the top ten youth leaders. I think we should all he very proud of our club achievements.

Remember State Royalty at our Lodge 88, September 23. Please ask your mother to donate a cake or pie; we will have many out of town guests and this will help our pastry committee. Also come join in the fun and dance that afternoon.

Our District V meeting will be held in Pasadena October 7. Once again we need your help for cakes or pies.

Mrs. Caraway has a lot planned for us that day, so please come help work and play. We will also have our District Youth meeting this day. I hope you will all be there.

Teens plan to have a bowling party and the pre-teens plan on having a skating party.

LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE Dear Readers, The State YAD was held September 9, starting at 11 a.m. with the registration of crafts. Our monthly meeting was held September 12 at 8 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Arleen Cabla. The roll was called and the minutes were read. We discussed a social — miniature golf in Temple.

We will meet at the Seaton School at 5 p.m. September 23rd. Afterward we will have sandwiches at the hall.

We have a new member in the youth club; he is Keith Andel. The Meeting was then adjourned. We all had a little snack. Our next meeting is set for October 10th at 8 p.m.

Under old business we discussed Ole district YAD and state YAD. Under new business we discussed the Beseda and the District VI fall meeting.

Our meeting was then adjourned. Afterward we played baseball and came back where we drank sodawater, ate cookies, cake and ice cream.

LODGE NO. 153, LA SALLE Dear Members, On September 10th we held our regular monthly meeting.

The meeting opened with the prayer.

David Drastata told the club about their trip to State YAD. The club would like to say thankyou for the plague given us for being one of the top ten clubs.

The club welcomed two new members Connie Coleman and Laverne Coleman. We are glad to have the two of you with us.

September 11 was our adult meeting. Our club voted to make refreshments for the adults.

It was a very entertaining day with a display of craft and talent from all over the state. Lodge 66 had a number of second and third place winners. Although we had no first place winners, our lodge was well represented. Our youth club was one of the top ten in the state.

State Youth Activity Day (Royalty) will be held September 23 in Houston I would like to wish a lot of luck to District III Queen Cindy Horak from Lodge 84, and King Johnny Gaidusek from our Lodge No. 66.

Remember, our meeting for the month of September which will be held on the last Sunday of this month. There will be a social following the meeting.

Everyone be sure to bring your aluminum cans next month for we will be turning them in. We are still planning on going to Sonora Caverns.

Alth°ugh school has started, it is rather hard to get everyone together.

After the meetings, we had refreshments and visited. Later we had a Bunco party. Mrs. Beatrice Socha and Linda Pelzel won prize for the most and the least points. Everyone had a good time playing and getting excited.

We have been invited to a skating party on September 23rd. All these wanting to go, meet at the Sokol at 1 p.m. We are invited by Lodge 135, and they are paying our way; it will be held in Lancaster. Lodge 28 East Bernard held its last meeting on September 2nd at 2 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by 'the president. We all recited the pledge. Then the secretary read the minutes and they were approved as read. The treasurer gave his report of how many bills we have to pay and how much money we still have in the bank.

Next we all started on craft. Mrs. Valigura showed us how to make a pin cushion; we all enjoyed making them for our mothers. After everyone was finished, the president adjourned the meeting.

On September 9th I went with my family to Taylor for the State l'AD. We had only one third place winner from East :Bernard; he was Kenneth Valigum.

RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY Sister Theresa Stefka, 82, a life-time resident of Granger, passed away in an Austin hospital on Wednesday, August 15th, 1973. She was born in Granger April 7th, 1891 and was a member of the SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church and Lodge No. 20, SPJST in Granger.

Surviving are two daughters, Miss Gardina Stefka of Austin and Mrs. Mildred A. Shirock of Boulder, Colorado; a son, Frank O., Stefka of Victoria; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 9:45 a. m. Friday, August 17th, from the Oondra Funeral Home in Granger followed by rites, at the SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with the Rev. George Tydlacka officiating. Interment was in the Calvary Cemetery.

RESOLVED by the members of Lodge Komensky No. 20, in the premise represented by the undersigned. Special Committee, that condolence and deepest sympathy be extended to the bereaved family of our departed sister.

Brother Albert P. Trlica 64 years of age, passed away suddenly, the result

of an aoute congestive heart failure, in Fort Worth on Thursday, July 19th.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Trlica on May 20th, 1973.

Brother Trlica was born in Granger on April 25th, 1909. He was a Certified Public Accountant, and a senior exequ,. tive of a leather manufacturing company in Fort Worth. He was a veteran of World War II; a member of the American Legion, various Fort Worth civic clubs and a long time member of Lodge Komensky, SPJST of Granger.

He is survived by one son, Thomas A. Trlica, now serving in the U. S. Army; also his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jiro. R Trlica of Granger; one sister, Mrs. Charlie (Hermina) Lehman of Needville; three brothers Johnnie Trlica of Austin, Frank E. Trlica of Pleasanton and Raymond H. Trlica of Springfield, Missouri.

Funeral services were held in Fort Worth, with interment at Greenwood Mausoleum in that city.

Services for Brother Orsak were held at 10 a.m. September 12th in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with the Very Rev. Benedict Zientek, pastor of Sacred Heart Cathedral, officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

KOSAREK, age 87, of 633 McCall, Carpus Christi, who passed away in the Taylor S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I on Friday, September 7th after several years of illness.

She was born in Industry, Texas, June 24, 1886, the daughter of the late John and Ann Krcha, pioneer Industry residents. She lived in Temple for many years until she moved to Corpus Christi in 1936. She resided there until she obtained a residence at the Rest Home. She was a Catholic and a member of Lodge No. 47 SPJST of Seaton.

Survivors are one son, William Kosarek of Temple; one daughter, Mrs. R. R. (Gladys) Richter of Corpus Christi; one brother, John W. Krcha of Temple; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Two brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 10, in Harper-Talasek Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Frank Simcik officiating. Interment was in the Seaton Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Daniel Krcha of Temple, Herman Schneider and Ervin Heinrich, both of Slaton, Clarence (Tex) Krcha, of San Antonio, Raymond Krcha of Lubbock and Floyd Stuteville of Rogers.

Mrs. Kasper was born November 12, 1900 in Williamson County. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and of the SPJST Lodge.

Items ACCENT ON HEALTH Mention a case of childhood poisoning and one generally thinks of a host of potentially lethal household substances which the child could have imbibed, not knowing the dangers involved.

But officials at the State Health Department are quick to emphasize that the dangers of poisoning are not restricted to items within the home. Potential sources of poison thrive in backyards and gardens all across Texas. The little known sources of these poisons — common, garden - variety plants.

Most plants are harmless. Many are poisonous under certain conditions. A few are poisonous under nearly all conditions. More than 700 species of plants in the United States are known to have caused death or illness. Each year, about 12,000 children in this courttry chew or swallow potentially poisonous plants.

The poisonous nature of a plant is caused by the presence of one or more kinds of substances. There are some substances which are themselves toxic

to animals: an alkaloid, for example, is toxic principle in poison hemlock.

Other substances are initially harmless but may decompose to forth toxic products soon after being eaten — an example .14 glucoside, a sugar produced in wild cherry which changes to form the highly toxic prussic acid. Some substances are formed by the action of micro-organisms on plants: a fungi on moldy hay forms decomposition products, some of which may be toxic. Still other substances are absorbed directly from the soil and stored in harmful quantities in the tissues of certain plants: selenium, for example, may be found in some species of locoweeds, or potassium nitrate may be present in oats.

To the average person,, the term "poisonous plant" suggests one that poisons upon contact, causing a mild or severe dermatitis or skin irritation.

Texas certainly has its fair share of the plants known to be capable of causing such irritations, say State Health Department officials. Possibly the most familiar are the leaves, bark, and fruit of poison ivy and poison oak.

But did you know that hairy leaves and stems of parsnip and lady slippers, the milky juice of spurges, and the leaves of the cultivated primrose are also some causes of dermatities?

Lily bulbs and stalks, stinging nettles and vanilla beans likewise have toxic qualities, and are capable of producing severe skin irritations.

Most poisonous plants are harmful only when they are eaten. In the case of nitrate-containing plants, the citrate content is reduced to the toxic substance. This substance then enters the blood stream, and changes the red pigment of the blood in such a way that it is incapable of transporting oxygen to body tissues. The result is suffocation.

Poisonous mushrooms, mostly toadstools, cause more than 100 fatalities in this country each year. Daffodil bulbs, larkspur seeds, lily of the valley flower, and jasmine berries are all harmful if eaten. A classic example is the rhubarb which has a perfectly edible stalk, but contains a deadly poison in the leaf.

Contact poisoning can be prevented best by learning to recognize the plants and avoiding them. Of course, it is always prudent to wear protective clothing such as leggins and gloves when

venturing into areas where poison plants are known to flourish.

If you are exposed to a poisonous plant, immediately wash the contact area with laundry soap and water to remove toxic resins.

Measures can also be taken to prevent the accidental eating of plants.

Keep children away from plants and teach them not to chew plant stems or to put plant parts, such as berries or bulbs, in their mouths.

If your child does eat a plant, and you are uncertain whether it is poisonous, immediately call a doctor. He, in turn, will contact one of the 22 Poison Control Centers near you for emergency medical and antidote information. Filling out an application for life insurance, Edwards came to a question about his health. He said he had a clear record, failing to mention that a doctor had once given him aspirin for a cold.

After Edwards died, his family put in a claim for the insurance. But the company refused to pay off, charging that he had not told the whole truth in his •application. And in a court test, the judge agreed with the company that the policy was null and void. The family didn't collect a cent.

Plainly, that was a harsh decision.

But it was handed down almost a century ago. It is hard to imagine a court today throwing out a family's life insuraaice on such flimsy grounds. While you are still expected to tell the truth in an insurance application, modern courts would judge your answers more reasonably.

In a recent case, an applicant for life insurance was asked whether he used liquor to the point of intoxication. The man said he did not. Actually, however, he had been somewhat intoxicated on two occasions during the previous five years.

Was his answer wrong enough to invalidate the policy? No, ruled a court, ordering the company to pay the fam-

18 ily's claim.

"An occasional use of intoxicating liquor," said the court, "does not (make) a man intemperate."

Moreover, most life insurance policies now include an "incontestability clause" to further protect the beneficiaries. Under this clause, the insurance company has only a limited period --usually, two years â&#x20AC;&#x201D; to quarrel with answers in the application. After that time the validity of the policy is beyond challenge.

Still, even the incontestability clause won't help if the fraud is extreme. One man, sickly himself, sent a healthy friend. to take his insurance examination- for him. This fraud, discovered after the man's death, was held so basic that not even the incontestability clause could save the policy..

Written by Will Bernard. â&#x20AC;˘ECONSTRUCT'ION OF THE NATIONAL THEATRE (Narodni Divedlo) The venerable Golden Chapel on the Vltava river, a matter of pride to all Czechs is to undergo extensive reconstruction The theatre is no longer able to cope with the demands of modern times. After a considerable amount of planning and preparatory work, the radical surgery is now to be carried out. Whereas the facades and auditorium will not be affected, substantial changes will take place behind the stage.

The first efforts aimed at building the National Theatre date back to the earliest phase of the Czech national resurgence. Prominent personalities of the Czech national life in those days felt that a theatre would offer the best means for awakening the national consciousness of the people of Bohemia.

Actually, there were two schools of thought at the time. Those who belonged to the first one advocated the construction of an interim structure whereas the more energetic people insisted that a truly monumental theatre should be built rivaling in every , respect the German Noe* Theatre (later renamed Stavoyske Theatre).

In the end, the more ambitious project was accepted. A "Society for the Establisimient of the National Theatre" was formed and a large-scale fund raising drive was launched. The whole nation chipped in thus manifesting national solidarity.

The original project called for the construction of a sort of National Cen-

VtSTNfK ter including theatre and concert facilities, a restaurant and other social amenities. Fearing the establishment of a hotbed of Czech patriotism, Austrian authorities declined to grant permission.

In order to set things in motion and to circumvent further complications and protractions, the Assembly of the Kingdom of Bohemia initiated the construction of the Provisional Theatre on the site reserved for the National Theatre.

In 1866 Professor Zitek, a prominent Czech architect, drew up the plans. Two years later the foundation-stone was laid.Professor Zitek conceived the theatre as a grandiose, representative national monument, as evidenced by his design of the vestibule, foyer, staircase, etc. Outstanding Czech creative artists, e. g. Ales,. Preisler and others, took part.

The opening performance held on June 1, 1881, was the famous Smetana's opera "Libuse". Unfortunately, shortly afterwards, on August 12, negligence on the part of tinsmiths working on the roof of the building caused fire and the theatre burned down. All that remained were external walls, vestibule, foyer, loggias and the royal loge. However, even before the flames were extinguished a new nation-wide fund raising drive was launched. Within a few weeks the collections exceeded one million crowns and the construction could start anew.

The contract was awarded to Professor Schulz, a disciple or Professor Zitek.

He was able to grasp very well Zitek's concept and supervised the building of a new, even lovelier theatre. He succeeded in linking up the historic section with the former Provisional Theatre in a purposeful manner. Replacing the old adjoining Pollak' house, he built a new building well harmonizing with the Provisional Theatre. Thanks to Schulz's elfforts, the theatre acquired a more democratic character. Thus, for instance, a number of lodges were abolished in order to gain room for more seats and a larger standing area.

A number of changes and repairs were carried out since those days.

However, they in no way affected the facilities required for day-to-day operation of the theatre. The current reconstruction is intended to simplify the operations and modernize the technical facilities.

The recognition work will center around the former Provisional Theatre, Schulz's house, and the basement areas under the adjoining buildings. The stage in the former Provisional Theatre is to be reconstructed and a new elevator

for the transportation of stage scenery will be built going all the way to the basement. From there a tunnel will be built right under the Divadelni Street linking the theatre with the tmderground storage areas under the adjoining buildings. In addition to storage areas and workshops, there will be also a new boiler-room replacing the one in the historic building.. A welcome by-product of this development will be the removal of the smoke-stack from the main theatre building thus certainly enhancing the latter's appearance. After the completion of reconstruction, it will be no longer necessary to biting stage scenery from distant storage.. facilities exposing them to the effects of inclement weather.

The historic director's office is the only part of Schulz's houie to remain unchanged. There will be new greenrooms, rehearsal rooms and an actors' lounge. The entrance in Tyl's Square will stay where it is, but box-offices will be replaced by private conference rooms.

Under the vestibule in the main. building new cloakrooms will be built for visitors holding tickets to the pit and to 1st and 2nd balcony. The snack-bar in the western section of the building will be replaced by a smoke-room fering access to the terrace. Arrangements will be made to enable the public to gain access to the underground areas to see the foundation-stones. New choir and ballet hails will be built in the attick space.

Considerable changes will be made in the area immediately adjoining the theatre. Under the corner building at Divadelni and Ostrovni Streets, as well as in the area directly adjoining the theatre, underground storage facilities will be built to accommodate a parking lot, transibrmer station,, emergency power supply, and everything else that is not directly connected with stage operations.

The reconstruction project anticipates that later on two houses adjoining the theatre willl be pulled down, to make room for a new building accommodating administrative offices. Another building to be constructed in the Narodni Avenue will be a six-floor structure i100.6 ing a restaurant, cafe, : lounges, and exhibition facilites.

During the reconstruction large-scale repair work will be carried out on jhe theatre upholstery, gilting, etc. A thorough brush-up will be given to the famous Millais curtain. ensure that the architectural arrangement of the auditorium and the facades will be in no way affected.

This was the finding of a survey by the Institute of Life Insurance. Moreover, most people's planning, both in a personal and financial sense, the survey found.

For example. a sampling of people 40 years of age and over found that the majority felt that the retirement years would somehow be a pleasant period. Few problems — not even inflation --- were anticipated.

Recently an expert in retirement systems told a meeting of the Society of Actuaries that if present population growth and retirement patterns continue, more workers will be in retirement than holding jobs 70 years from now.

Using a hypothetical example involving such considerations as zero population growth, a 95 percent employment factor, no inflation, and employer pensions averaging $3,000 annually, he estimated that in the future, the number of both active and retired workers would consist of 83.9 million people, the same number as now, but the percentage of retired workers would increase to 56 per cent of the total from the 35 per cent today.

The ,projected increase in the number of people who will be living in retirement, together with the trend toward longer life spans for both men and women, mean that it will be more essential than ever for people to plan well ahead of time for how they will live after they stop working.

Here, according to the Institute, are four points to take into consideration in planning for retirement: 1. Try to find satisfying activities to replace working.

2. Prepare emotionally for the change in your life style., 3. Make provisions for special problems of poor health that may develop later.

4. Work out a financial plan to guarantee an adequate income.

The widespread support for life insurance was disclosed by an Institute survey of public attitudes in 19'72. The figures represent an increase of seven per cent over the results of a similar survey in 1968 when 63 per cent saw life insurance as a necessity.

The recent survey also found that people are changing their basis for determining how much life insurance they should have.

In the 1968 survey, 55 per cent of the people said life insurance purchases should be based on how much people could afford, while 36 per cent said their chief considerations should be the amount of money the family would need to be self-supporting if the breadwinner died.

But in the 1972 survey, there was a marked shift in emphasis toward family needs instead of cost. In that survey, 45 i.er cent said that making the family selfsupporting should be the major consideration, while the percentage of those who put cost first dropaped to 41 per cent of the respondents.

As one respondent said: You don't need it until you really need it, and then you really need it."

Why do they ask so many questions about your health and such?

To begin with, you have to understand that life insurance is based on the principle of a large group of people policyholders — sharing the costs of paying benefits to each individual member of the group as the need arises. When a person joins the group as a policyholder, the premiums he pays for his insurance coverage are based on the financial risk he adds to the group. So also are the person's physical condition and unusual hazards to his life because of his job or perhaps his recreation.

If a person in questionable health or exposed to any unusual occupational hazards is issued a policy at standard premium rates, he would be increasing the financial risk that would have to be carried by all the policyholders in his group. It is only fair to ask about these possibilities in advance and to verify the information supplied to prevent unfair costs to the other policyholders.

So when a person applies for life insurance, he or she must furnish some personal health history and, in many instances take a medical examination.

Life companies also issue nominal amount policies without an examination.

The information furnished by a prospective policyholder is routinely verified through a procedure similar to credit reportin,g. In addition, statements about health are checked with the records of the Medical Information Bureau, an agency set up many years ago by life insurance companies to alert them to inaccuracies and occasional attempts at fraud. The company will also ask the a pplicant for permission, 'to get additional details about his or her health from his family physician.

There is a very good chance that you will be able to get life insurance once you have applied for it. About 97 per cent of the applications for ordinary life insurance in the United States are accepted by the life companies, according to the institute.

Of the three per cent of ordinary applications that are not acceptable, less than three-fifths are related to serious health imp airments and the rest to other factors, including extremely hazardous jobs.
