— Route 1 to Route 2, etc., or a P.O, box number of a member, the Vestnik is NOT delivered and, generally sent back to our Supreme Lodge at a cost of 10 cents per returned copy. Therefore, two bad results occur — you don't receive your Vestnik and our Society is charged for it! Please notify the Supreme Lodge, SPJST, P.O. —Elbert Hubbard their forthcoming featured attraction, a three-act comedy presentation "Alibi Bill," which will be staged on Sunday, September 16th, at Lodge 88's Chandelier Ballroom in Houston; promising a delightful afternoon with much, elf your favorite entertainment, for young and old, alike.

The Hlahol Dramatic Club, is a part of Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88, and operates on a non-profit basis, since

its existence, having given our youth and older drama enthusiasts an opportunity to demonstrate their talents in both languages — English and Czech.

Casting was under way for quite sometime and good talent is assured by the club's director and; assistant director. The production with its three acts, each with its specific stage demands, and the costumes in which the play will be given! will all make it a memorable afternoon for the members and guests.

It is indeed commendable of the dra matic club members for their consistent interest and much success is extender. to them for continued progress.

• • For several months you have seen articles which appear frequently in the official organ, Vestnik, concerning the much-talked About "Texas Folklife Festival." This festival brings to life the numerous traditional ways Texans of all rraces and national origins have had fun. The huge project will highlight the historic arts and crafts, music and dances, food, games, and costumes which are a heritage of our culture.

It is a proven fact that this festival is a fun-filled celebration of the diversity of an amazing people — the Texans ®- akin to the people of many lands, yet unique among the people of the world.

Wednesday, September 5, 1973 The Folklife Festival, a state-wide party, will take place or September 6 through 9 on the grouc.d:1 of the University of Texas Institute of Texan Cultures, Hemisfair Plaza in San. Antonio. A cordial invitation is extended to everyone throughout the state.

Several of the SP,l3T members are participating in the festival, namely Brother Sid Po,k1adnik of Dallas, who is acting as Ambassador of District HI, the Beseda Dancers of Lodge 84, Dallas, under the direction of Sister Bessie Petr; and Brother E. J. Katliccek, Jr., of New Braunfels, is also taking an active part this year.

The University of Texas Institute believes: no matter how different or divergent our ancestry, we are, all Texans have a, common bond in our past and a common stake in our future.

This is all the University of Texas Institute of Texan Cultures ever had to say, and the Texas Folklife Festival seems to be a good way to say it. We here in the SPJST editor's office fully concur with the Texas Cultures' philosophy. Our best wishes to them for greater endeavors!

It's human frailty that prevents one generation from understanding and trusting another. A young man of twenty-five will go into business and surround himself with others of his own age, or younger. Rarely will he employ men older. He thinks they are fossils.

As he ages, he continues to feel confidence and faith in his contemporaries. Whereas at twenty-five he thought men of that age had a monopoly on intelligence and resourcefulness, so at forty he turns to men of his own age for assistance. By the time he is sixty, he distrusts anyone under forty, except for routine work.

We need to remind ourselves occasionally that neither young nor old men necessarily know it all. Integrity, imagination, and executive ability may exist in full bloom at any age.

In Victorian times, when the language of flowers was in vogue, a. young man who sent a bouquet to his girl friend had to watch his step. A red rose or red tulip meant, "I love you," but larkspur complained. "You're fickle."

And chrysanthemums said, in effect, "Let's just be friends."

A charming custom that might well be revived, the language of flowers has an extensive vocabulary. There is

While in California, they toured several surrounding cities. Senior Chief Ivan Haskovec has placed his reptiest for 20and will retire from the year Coast Guard in March 1975t From San Francisco, the Ivan Haskovec family and relatives motored to Long Beach to visit Mr. and Mrs. Flick ivilarusuk and sons. (Mrs. Shirley Marusak is the former Shirley Mach of Ennis). Mrs. Anna Haskevec and her party also visited many places of interest before departure.

• Dennis J. Bartek, EL, of Academy, near Temple, died at his borne Sunday, August 26, after a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from Harper Talasek Funeral Home in Temple, with burial in Bellwood Memorial Panc near 'Temple. Brother Bartek had previously served as secretary of the RVOS Supreme Lodge, having recently resigned ' because of poor health. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton. fie became a member of RVOS (Farmers' Mutual Protective Association), Jan. 28, 1941 and elected Sec'y in 1966.

Antonin Dvorak was born on September 8, 1841, the son of an innkeeper of Mulha_usen in (Gzechia) Bohemia., His father had destined! him to succeed in his estate, but, as the inn dispensed music as well as hospitality, through the offices of the bands of itinerate musicians who occasionally Pla y ed for the entertainment of villagers and guests, something stirrecl within the boy, and perhaps before he realized it, he had set ins heart upon the precarious career of a :musician instead of looking to the complacent comfort that was no doubt assured the proprietor of a village caravansary.

On his own initiative young Dvorak persuaded the village schoolmaster to teach him to play the violin and to sing and presently he was allowed to sing in the church and to play, too, on special occasions. When he was 12 years old, he was sent by his father to Zlonits, a town not far from his birthplace, where he was given the opportunity to proceed in! his music under the tutelage of the local organist and. the discipline of an uncle. There Dvorak's musical education really began; here he learned the fundamentals of organ and piano-forte playing, musical theory, harmony, extemporization, and other branches of the art. UNCORRECTED MINUTES OF THE DISTRICT III SPRING MEETING HELD AT LODGE NO. 66, ELM MOTT, SUNDAY, MAY 20, 1973 The spring meeting of District III, SPJST, was called to order at 10:35 a.m.

by District President John Krizan. The pledge of allegiance was led by Patricia Stanislav and the SPJST pledge

by Julie Slovak.

Brother Silas Smith, president of Lodge 66, welcomed the membership and wished all a nice day in the town of Elm Mott. In response, Brother Albert Banik spoke of his regret to assume Brother John Kutni's role in responding to the welcome. Brother Banik spoke of Brother Kutni's work with and for District III, and also expressed thanks for the use of the hall for the day and commented that with such a receptive attendance the meeting would be a real success.

Following the response there was a tribute to those members of District III who had passed away since the fall Meeting, led by President John Krizan.

Brother Robert Urban, district secretaxy, proceeded with the roll call of lodges present for the morning session. There were ten lodges present.

Minutes of the previous meeting were accepted with one Orrection, that being that President John Krizan made the statement about sending a letter to Brother Skrabanek informing him of Brother Sid Pokladnik's re-election as Rest Home Director from District III. Correspondence included a note of thanks from the family of Brother Kutni, a letter from SL President Nick Morris expressing his regrets for having to miss the meeting, a letter from SPJST Lodge 142, Houston announcing their opening and advertising space available in their souvenir book, and a letter from editor oft' the Vestnik, Brother Sefcik, saying that he requests our minutes be published only once instead of twice, as our District By-Laws stipulate.

Treasurer John Gaidusek, made the following report: General Fund (as of 30 April 1973) — $1,215.30 District III Youth Fund — $436.34 District III Youth Camp Development Fund (March interest to date included at $229.29) — $2,274.14 District III Youth Counselor Wilma Nesuda introduced State Youth Director Dorothy Massey and all the youth leaders and their assistants. Mrs. Nesuda's financial report for the youth

Wednesday, September 5, 1973 was as follows: A) SPJST District III; Youth Camp Expense Fund (Savings Account — $305.10. Plus that which was deposited in 1973 — $3,799.08; Total — $4,104.18 Plus interest on $305.10 since Dec. 31, 1972; Plus interest on $4,104.18 since March 27, 1973.

B) Checking account — $8.34 C) Grand Total. — $4,112.52.

Sister Nesuda also said that the SPJST District III Youth Club would meet today. The club plan; their own activities and each lodge in the district has two youth representatives to• the club. It was mentioned that the training class for youth leaders will be held at Lodge 25, Ennis. YAD will be worked on, and State Youth Director Massey would have some things to say. June 24th was announced as the date of the District YAD to be held at Lodge 84, Dallas. Also, the District Camp would be in July from the 29th till August 1, with the Youth Club's activity to take place some place between those two activities. Mrs. Nesuda asked the men to help at camp as chaperones for the boys. She also• said that she owed the youth clubs visits, but that the conflicts of meeting times made it difficult to do so. It was mentioned that LIT's (Leaders in Training) 17 years old were no longer eligible for camp. In closing, Sister Nesuda said the State YAD for Talent and Crafts would be held on September 9th, at Taylor High School, and the State Royalty contest would be in Houston, at Lodge 88, on September 23rd and urged all to participate. She said that if a district winner could not be present at those YADs to be sure and let her know.

Sister Nesuda asked all to prepare for a good SPJST summer and urged everyone to help their lodge youth leaders and asked all to remember the good that people did and that helping a child is important. Finally, she said that if anyone needed any forms, she had them with her.

Next on the agenda was the district director's report. Brother Pokladnik said, the district didn't want a long report, but a firm report instead. He wished the district a successful meeting on behalf of the Supreme Lodge.

He went on to point out Brother Henry Vitek, and said that Brothers Morris and Mikeska needed to be at the dedication elsewhere, today, and that Brother Hejny needed to be with his sales force. He said Brother Zabcik would

be at the meeting later because he had the check for the youth. He announced that Mrs. Morris, wife of SL President Nick Morris was in the hospital and that President Morris was doing well now himself.

Brother Pokladnik went on to say that the SL is still growing and the staff is working well together. Hats off to the sales force for the job they have done. He added that we were envied for our youth programs and our sales. In Texas he said, the SPJST is well-known throughout its youth, etc., and with 47,000 members we're still blossoming with $77,000,000 insurance in force, and with solvency at 121 plus (which is something that has been done for years) and, with $3,000,000 in surplus to protect us, the SL had never failed to pay off or take care of any of its policy holders.

Brother Pokladnik also added that the SL was happy to have Brother Silas Smith with them in his new job. And that if anyone needed an answer or anything, all they had to do was give Brother Pokladnik a call. Closing his report he said that a person could still borrow at 7 1/2 per cent interest and that everyone should come by the new SL office and have some coffee.

Following his director's report, Brother Pokladnik went into his Rest Home report. He said that all the directors were happy with the financial situa tion and that the administrative perSonnel are doing a fine job. All the families who have relatives there are happy with the care they are receiving. This concluded his report.

District III Representative Alvin Nesuda then made his report. He started by introducing Brother Lad. Zatopek of District II (also a district representative), then he introduced local sales representatives of District III. Brother Nesuda urged them to take an active part in the affairs of District III. He mentioned that they had just ended the best year ever with $11,390,000 plus in sales, with District III selling $2,533,000. In 1969 total sales were $7,969,970, with District III selling $1,338,500. He added that in 1969 Lodge 25 had only five organizers who wrote $83,000, whereas in 1972, the lodge had 10 orgahizers who wrote $475,000. Mr. Nesuda stated that more organizers equal more insurance sales.

Before he finished his report he announced that Lodge 66, Waco, was first in the district in sales, and that things were going well and that he felt that

they would continue to do so. He offered his best to Brother Silas Smith.

At this point the agenda was not followed, due to surplus time, and instead of adjourning for lunch, the 'meeting continued with the introduction of visitors. It was mentioned that the district queen and the state duke could not be present.

Still ahead of the agenda, time was given to some of the visitors to say a few words.

Emil Petr zan gave a brief sketch of the back- made the motion to accept the offer ground of the District Scholarship. and Brother Sid Pokladnik seconded it.

5 sented a check of $1511 to the district for the General Fund and a check of $1,063.20 to the district for the youth allocation from the SL. He also congratulated the sales representatives for a job well done in 1972, adding that the SL was in good shape ,and predicted $19,000,000 in assets in 1973. He spoke briefly of the good time he had at Cleburne with the 130 youth who were there.

He also said that, as of April 1, two lodges were merging to form Lodge No. 93. Giving the SPJST a, 'total of 130 lodges, with $78,637,911 - insurance in force, and closed by saying how glad he was to be here.

President Krizan then introduced the Honorary President of the SL, Brother Edward L. Marek. Brother Marek said he was glad to be present and glad to have Silas Smith aboard. He commented on how proud he was of the youth and of what they have done; by helping we are building. He concluded his remarks by saying we should be together and build our SPJST up.

Introductions continued with Cyril Svrcek, KJT Vice President, and Jos. Holasek, publisher, and mayor of West, Texas; also Brother Mazanec of the Publication Committee. Brother Otto Hanus was recognized and he asked the members to help him get some good things for the museum at the new SL Building. Brother Ben Zabcik said that the SL is proud of the museum and the archives and what Mr. Hanus has done and urged all to drop by for a tour.

The installation of officers was the last item of the day. John Krizan called upon Brother 'Zabcik to• install the officers. Brother Pokladnik offered his congratulations and even more to John Kriza.n for the good, job• he did as president. Albert Banik, thanked all for coming out to the meeting.

Brother Zalman said he was pleased with the officers of the year.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:15 p.m.

The hundreds of guests, many from quite a distance„ really enjoyed the music of three popular orchestTas: Lee fey Mratocha, Joe Palek, and the Texas

6 Dutchmen. The high light of the dance was when the three orchestras, under the capable direction of the incomparable Master of Ceremonies Lee Roy Matocha, performed together! That was eight hours of dancing to good music, and I think everyone had a great time for I heard several express their hopes for another "Big Three" dance!

There is a very special date in September, and that is Sunday, September 16th, when you will have the chance to see an English play, "Alibi Bill". This is 'a hilarious three-act comedy presented by our famous Hlahol Dramatic Club.

The admission will be only one dollar, and what a treat you will get for that dollar! To make it even nicer for you to enjoy the day, a dinner of barbecued chicken with the trimmings will be served from 11:30 on. So please circle the 16th on your calendar, so you won't be one of those who forgot and missed this special treat!

Another important day is the State Royalty Day on September 23rd, and on this day you will be able to show your support of our youth and youth leaders.

The SPJST has some mighty fine youth, and here is your chance to prove that you are behind them 100 per cent! A fried chicken and sausage dinner will be served from 11:30 on. After the royalty contest and ceremony„ there will be a FREE dance with the popular Harry Czarnek and his Texas Dutchmen furnishing the good music.

We hope you are making plans to attend the lodge monthly meeting next Monday, September 10th. We have initiation of new members, so sales representatives, please call your new members. Snacks and your favorite beverage will be served after the meeting.

For a good supper, come to the lodge Thursday from 5:30 to 8 p. m. Tommy and Clara Jecmenek and their helpers always have something, special, spaghetti, chili or chicken, etc.) besides the good hamburgers and homemade pastry. After a good supper, you can join the many guests at the Social, which starts at 8 p. m.

special smiles, for they were enjoying having her brother„ Mr. Henry Studney, for a weeks visit. Talking with Harriette, one can quickly see how very proud she is of him, and well she may be! Mr. Studney, who is a graduate of Rice University and who has done post graduate work at Columbia and Chicago Northwestern, is a world traveler and can speak six languages. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy in World War II. Harriette,. we surely hope that your .brother will get to come and see that great comedy, "Alibi Bill", that you and Director Tim Kostom are directing.

Louise Kadlecek, one of our active members in the Choral and Dramatic Clubs, underwent major surgery. We were glad to hear that she is doing well, and we surely hope you will gain your strength back quilckly, Louise.

I have many names of guests who celebrated anniversaries and birthdays at recent dances. Although I cannot name them all, I do extend best wishes to all and hope you will celebrate many happy occasions at our lodge! Mr. and Mrs. Frankie Svatek of Stafford and Ruth and Monroe Jahns celebrated their anniversaries 'at the Hi-Toppers dance, and Johnnie Hoffman, Florence Lawson„ Larry Maresh, Edwin Velek, Barbara Malek and Pearl Mize were some. of those celebrating their birthdays.

Marcell and Bill Malak, Pat and Bill Neskorik and Dorothy and James Rothermel celebrated their anniversaries at the Knights of Dixie dance. Marie Stayton, Marcell Malak, Edna Wehring, Jerry Keith, Willard Weldon, E. J. Slanina and Mrs. Julius Salerno celebrated their birthdays at this dance. Vlasta and Sonny Elzner, son and daughter-in-law of our fine members Marie and Stanley Elmer, had a large group of relatives, and friends at this dance, and Wanda Kennedy tells me they all "had a ball"; this is great, and do come often. Both dances had a 'big crowd, and all enjoyed the good music.

Dear Members: Our regular meeting, which was held on Sunday, August 12, was called to order at 4 o'clock by our Vice-President Edwin Adamek.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and duly approved as read. The property committee report was given by Bro. Edwin Kovar followed by the treasurer's report by Bro. Frank Heil.

Two new members were receiveCt to oar membership: Marcus Loeve and Antoinette Pokorny. Were happy to have both di you and hope to see you

at our many lodge 'functions'.

Our District 11 fall meeting, which was held at the American Legion on August 19, turned out to be very successful and everyone who attended seemed to have a real good time. A great big thanks to the Dist. II Officers for furnishing the food and drinks and to all who helped in any way to make this meeting the success it was.

On September 9„ the State YAD is going to be held at Taylor High School.

This a real big event •for our youth so let's all come out and give them our z-iiipport 100 percent. The noon meal will be catered beginning at 11 o'clock, but check your Vestnik for complete details.

Our next meeting will be held September 16 at 4 p. m. instead of on the 9th due to the State IAD being held that Sunday, so please make note of this change.

Supreme SPJST President Nick Morris of Temple made an official visit to Hallettsvilie Sunday and attended the local Lodge No. 4 Family Day affair. M'r. Morris was accompanied by his wife clueing a busy Sunday schedule. The state SPJST executive commented on insurance and remarked that Sf'JST has set new records in insurance sales and new members. Director Sablatura also delivered a brief address adding a bit of humor to the annual family day gathering. District VI S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Director Erwin Holy of Hallettsville reported on progress On rest homes in Taylor and Needville.

The business meeting closed with the distribution of member d i.v idend cheeks.

LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members, Attendance at our August meeting was very good in spite of vacations, etc. It was good to see the McMillens, Greers, Chaloupkas, Pateks, Otto Kurtzs and many others; also Mrs. Botik visited with us and District III Vice President Johnnie Gaidusek and family were also present.

Door prize for ,August was won by Eva (Frill) Dockery. Thanks to Albert Kubola for serving as guide. Brother Louts Kubitla, our guide, says he fell asleep listening to some good polka music and almost missed awarding the door prize.

Well; anyway its a good story!

Our next meeting is at 2 p. m. on Sun' -day, September 9th. Do come out and it will be appreciated if the usual fine pastry is brought along to complement the good meals served by Inez Krivanek and Mary Tesar.

Fraternally yours, Otto Hams, Reporter —SPJSTADIES' CIRCLE, LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members: Be sure to attend the next meeting of the Ladies' Circle, Thursday, September 13th. A project has been planned which all members can participate in.

Three members, Bessie Prochaska, Annie Langer and Mary Tesar have donated the "makings" for a quilt and plans are for the Ladies' Circle to quilt it at this meeting. If members can arrive at the meeting about an hour ahead of the regular time and get an early start, it could be completed that day.

Needles and thread will be provided (bring your own thimble) — all that is really needed is some help -- both experienced and inexperienced. This would be an ideal time to learn an art that is coming back in fashibn from some ladies who have had many years of quilting experience. The quilt will be offered at the Cesky Obchod during the Polka Festival October 21st, so all members will benefit by working on it.

At the last meeting in August, the Ladies' Circle voted to reimburse any member for materials used to make an item for the booth at. the Polka Festival.

Keep the sales receipts and upon completion and donation to the booth, the member will receive her cost of materials purchased.

Millie \\'ruble reported on a letter she received from her brother and sister , inlaw Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Iltaba in Czechoslovakia. They said to tell all their friends in America "hello'%, A "get well" message was sent to Mary Saldana.. We understand she is doing better now and hope to see her at our meetings soon.

Les Dalton was reported to have undergone surgery last week at the VA hospital in Dallas. Our thoughts are with him and Frances and we wish nitn speedy recovery.

Honored at the August meeting was Mos. Zielt on her 91st birthday. She is a member who rarely misses a meeting.

We wish her many more years.

-Fraternally, Jo Ann Ilixson, LODGE NO. 80, HOLLAND, Dear Members, These hazy, hot days and cool early mornings remind me that the fall of the year is fast approaching. Soon we will be getting our winter garments out-of moth balls to keep warm.

In our area the milo crop harvest is just about completed, with very good yields and prices reported. The cotton harvest is from two to three weeks late due to the late wet weather we had in the spring, but the farmers are beginning to defoliate the cotton, and in another week or ten days ginning will be in full swing. I noticed that at our new gin near Holland (The Hot-Burt Gin, Inc.); they ginned several bales today, August 27. The price of cotton looks promising at this time,, so, at least it looks like the farmer is getting A good return for his products. That is

a summary of the crop outlook in the Holland area.

As to our lodge activities, we are adding members right along. The dances are well-attended with good order prevailing. We had a number of wedding receptions here at the hall so far and had family reunions every Sunday since the first Sunday in June.

At this time I want to congratulate and wish best wishes to the members of our new neighbor lodge, Lodge Academy No. 177. We wish you well!

Oh yes, just recently we installed flood lights on our hall premises, so we will have at lot of light at night.

We are also planning to , do some improving to the hall and the front entrance.

On Sunday, September 9, we will have our regular meeting, beginning at 4 o'clock, followed by a social. Supper and refreshments for all the members and their families — ya-all come, and fill up the hall; it's cool and comfortable.

See you in Taylor on Sept. 9th at Taylor High School on Hwy 95, in the northern part of Taylor and not too far from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home. The building is a large modern brick structure, easy to find and very prominent.

There are motels in the Taylor area and in Temple offering nice accomodations if you plan to stay overnight either before or after the State YAD. While we're thinking about it, be making plans for the State Royalty Competition at Lodge 88 in Houston on Sunday, Sept. 23rd.

DISTRICT NO. 2, YOUTH COUNSELOR Dear Members and Friends, The fall meeting and recreation day of District II was held on August 19th at the American Legion Hall in Taylor.

The attendance was good. The children enjoyed swimming, miniature golf, dancing, swinging and roaming in the large park. We had, planned to play ball but we just couldn't get the children started. The adults were in an air-conditioned building visiting, socializing and listening to the beautiful organ music which was provided

by Helmer Dahl. Then there was a delicious lunch spread for everyone present and it seemed that young and old alike had a full afternoon of fun and fellowship.

I would like to thank Brother Andrew Marek for getting these facilities for us and to all the ladies who worked in the kitchen, alsO Brother Edwin Adamek for seeing to it that all of the food got there. It was decided that the spring District II meeting will be held at Lodge No. 29, 'Taylor, but the date is not final, yet.

Dear Members and Readers, On August 6, 1973 a new youth club was organized for Lodge '177 in Academy. At this first meeting, we elected officers and discussed plans for the money-making project for our new club. We decided to sell sandwiches at the outdoor dance which the ) mother lodge was having. On Sunday, August 19 we went to the American Legion Hall in Taylor to attend the fall District II meeting. After the meeting we all went swimming near the lodge building. Dear Vestnik Readers, On August 26, the Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its annual picnic at the American Legion Center. To help with the picnic, each member brought a dish. Our meal consisted of barbecue, potato salad, beans, pickles, homemade bread, cupcakes and tea.

After we finished eating we walked to the baseball park. We began playing the boys against the girls — when it started raining. After it stopped we played some more. The boys won, 4-2.

Then we went home.

She was a member of the S:mithville Baptist Church and of Lodge 154 since 19411 She is survived by two sons, C. N. (Bill) Renfro and W. D. Renfro, Jr., both of Ft. Worth; five daughters, Mrs. Frances Vandergrift% Borger. Mrs. Nelle Ridenour, Copperas Cove, Mrs. Juanita Chasteen„ Killeen, Mrs. Doris Ogle and ,Mrs. Martha Lou Bradford„ both of Ft. Worth; five ' sisters, three brothers, 22 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 1:30 p. m. Friday, August 24 at Owens-Brumley Chapel Lynn officiating. with Rev. C. Pallbearers were grandsons Donald Vandergri'ff, Johnny Ogle,, Kenneth Ridenour, Ronnie Kelley, Billy C. Ridenour, :Steve Bradford and Eddie Vandergriff.

Interment was held in Bluebonnet Hills in Colleyville.

Items of Interest SOME REASONS WHY STUDENTS SHOULD STUDY CZECH 1. You should study a second language because it has a broadening and "humanizing" effect on you and will enrich your life greatly. Knowledge of

a second language, and the culture it represents, will increase your tolerance and understanding of others.

Unfortunately, proof of these claims can come to a, person only with increasing maturity and achievement of the bilingual status. However, the quest for a truly bilingual status probably will require more than the two years of language classes. Indeed, it may be a life-long experience.

Consequently, you should give serious consideration to the choice of the second language you will study. In order that your quest will have the best chance of 'being relatively easy, pleasant, and successful, may I suggest Czech as the language to study.

2'. Czech will be easier for you than some other languages and you will make rapid progress, if you already have some acquaintance with the language. Even the mere ability to "twist your tongue" to pronounce the many local, common Czech names is helpful.

3. The conversational approach is used and you can apply what you learn immediately by talking with the many fellow students and area residents who have some knowledge of the language. It will be of lifelong practical use to you almost anywhere, but especially in the Central Texas area bounded by the cities of Dallas, Sherman, Fort Wolth, Houston, Corpus Christi, and San Antonio. Over onehalf million Texans are of Czech descent, and Czech is the third most popular language used in Texas, being outranked by only English and Spanish. Presently, there are approximately five Czech language newspapers published in Texas.

4. Some specific ways in which a knowledge of Czech may help you in your career are: (a) Knowledge of the Czech culture and the ability to say even only a few words of Czech to a potential customer or client (who himself may know only a few words of (Czech) may prove to be a very important entry into a successful business or professional relationship with him. (b) The many Czech-founded fraternal orders, mutual aid societies, religious groups, and other Czech associations now use English as the official language and are open to everyone.

However, many of the old records are in Czech. Consequently, the directors, executive officers, attorneys, editors,

and other specialists in these organizations will continue to have a need for some knowledge of the Czech language. (c) A knowledge 01 Czech can be an asset if you aspire for political office in certain governmental service or into foreign trade. (d) Because Czechoslovakia has served as the "cross-roads of Europe" meeting place for all the "greats" of Europe, students of the fine arts, humanities, and sciences will find its castles, libraries, museums, theaters, and conservatories to be fertile study and research or visitation sites, if they have a knowledge of the language. (e) Because Czech is such a "highly phonetic language," its study can improve your English diction. It can be helpful in eliminating drawls and other possible undersirable (for some speaking careers) speech problems.

5. Learning the Czech language opens up opportunities for research in the relatively untouched field of the "Czechs of Texas." This can be of very practical value for all college students who are looking for original topics for research PaperS, masters' theses, and doctoral dissertations. No matter what your major may be, you can find some research project related to it in his field.

G. The Czech language is often called a "key" or "stepping stone" to learning the Russian language and many of the other Slavonic languages.

English and Czech use similar "Latin ABC" alphabets so it is relatively easy to learn word spellings and pronounciations thereby acquiring a Slavonic vocabulary. Similarity of the Czech and Russian vocabularies then permits concentration of effort on learning the Russian spellings in the vastly different "New Cyrillic" alphabet.

7. The U.S. government (HEW) recognizes Czech as a "critical language" and encourages students to study it in preparation for possible future needs .overseast. Consequently, students of Czech are eligible for certain governmental assistance not available to students of some other foreign languages.

8. Financial assistance for students of Czech also is available; from several private sources. These scholarships and loan funds are supported by the eight CZech-founded fraternal associations and individuals interested in the study of the Czech, language and culture.

9. In most college curricula, Czech will count the same as any other mod-

If you go to UTAustin or Texas ARM, you can continue your study of Czech to the extent of it being your major. Also, you may continue in the Slavonic languages by studying the more commonly offered Russian language.

10. There are now five colleges (UTAustin, Texas AGM', University of Houston, Texas Tech, and Temple Jr. College) in Texas which currently offer established courses in the Czech language. You now have an opportunity that many others do not have and that you may no longer have after you leave these colleges. Do not pass up this opportunity.

11. If you are of Czech descent, a better knowledge of the Czech language and your cultural heritage will prepare you for more successful living !by a more complete and proper acceptance and as initiation, into the American society and way of life.

Most likely your name will always be recognized as being of Czech origin, and this will be to your credit. Practically everyone is aware of and respects the economic, patriotic, and cultural contributions which the Czechs have made to help make this country great. If you can answer the occasional friendly questions about your language and culture of your ancestors, others Will respect rather than criticize you for it.

As you grow older you will feel an ever increasing psychological need for knowledge about your ancestral ties and cultural heritage. A lack of this knowledge of one's "roots" may cause one to lose his "social moorings" and net "abnormally." It is possible that a widespread `loss of roots" is the cause for much of the unrest in our country at the present time. Any course in the Czech language includes much about the Czech cultural heritage, and you should avail yourself of any present opportunity to gain this knowledge for your own future well being.

Bubak, President 718 North Windomere Dallas, Texas 75208 --SPJST-MOTORISTS URGED TO CONSERVE FUEL Effortless ways for motorists to cut down on fuel consumption were recommended recently by the American Automobile Association.

While AAA has stated that localized gasoline shortages should not measurably hamper summer vacation travel, the 15-million member motoring federation said the following guidelines would benefit car owners and at the sae time help relieve fuel pinches: —Form car pools for office commuting.

—Combine short trips. When taking children to school, or picking up your spouse after work, take care of shopping errands on the same outing.

—If you're considering buying a second car, make iU smaller. Vehicle weight has a great effect on gasoline consumption.

—Keep the car's engine in tune. Special attention should be given to fuel and air filters, plugs and points, and in late model cars, emission control devices.

—Don't fill your fuel tank to the neck. Fuel can overflow while the car is in motion or when parked on an incline. Fuel also can expand and overflow in hot weather even if the car is parked on level ground.

—Make certain tires are properly inflated. This also saves on tire wear.

Add extra pounds of air when traveling with a full load, but do not exceed the maximum pressure listed on tire side-

17 walls.

—Drive at moderate speeds whenever possible. Gasoline mileage is greatly affected by speed.

—Avoid "jack rabbit" starts. Always accelerate gradually as thought you had an egg between your foot and the accelerator.

--Drive at steady speeds whenever possible, as stop-and-go driving also increases fuel consumption. Anticipate traffic signals to minimize braking and acceleration.

—When entering a freeway, take full advantage of acceleration paths so that you can gradually reach highway speeds, rather than having to "floor board" the accelerator to reach cruising speed.

—Avoid accelerating hard when going up a hill; instead, build up adequate speed ahead of time.

—After starting a cold engine, don't use long warm-up periods; instead, driving slowly for a mile or so before reaching cruising speed.

--Don't allow the engine to idle more than a minute while parked.

AAA says motorists planning vacations should combine the applicable guidelines above with these tips: Cut down on use of the air-conditioner by beginning your travel day early in the morning and pulling off the road during the hottest hours.

— Try to travel lighter than normally. Excess weight puts additional strain on the engine and results in less miles per gallon of gasoline.

While reducing fuel consumption, most of the practices listed above will also decrease exhaust emissions as well as help conserve the nation's energy resources.

TRAVELING THROUGH TEXAS

by Kathy Rhoads American Automobile Association LA GRANGE Away from the "ticky-tack" of the big city, in the rolling hills of the almost spit and span area of Central Texas, lies the historic town of La Grange.

From Indian attacks to a Texas Revolution massacre to the presentday restoration of past landmarks, La Grange radiates an old-world type atmosphere native to Czech and German farmers who originally settled the area.

Overlooking La Grange, is Monument Hill State Park which serves as a resting place for the men of the Mier Ex-

18 pedition who were massacred by Mexican troops in 1842. Now, a 48-foot monument juts its way out of the ground, recalling the days when Texans were struggling for On September 15, Nicholas Mosby Dawsoy. group of Fayette County Mounted Volunteers under an oak tree which now rests on the courthouse square.

The band of men set out to reinforce Colonel Matthew Caldwell after San Antonio was captured. Upon approaching Salado Creek, Dawson discovered a battle already in progress. The men were suddenly surrounded by the Mexican Cavalry and some 36 Texans were killed, 3 escaped and 15 were taken hostage.

The Mexican uprisings continued, so Colonel William S. Fisher led a 308man team across the Rio Grande to capture Mier. The Colonel was fooled into surrendering and his men were captured and subsequently imprisoned at the Hacienda Salado in Mexico.

The hardships encountered by the prisoners were countless — many died from starvation and exposure.

In prison, 159 white beans and 17 black beans were placed in a jar. Texans who drew the black beans were shot. One of those men was Captain William Mosby Eastland of La Grange's Fayette County. Only five of the men made their way back home. In 1848, the remains of these patriots were given a military burial on the present site of Monument Hill which stands as a memorial to the Texas martyrs who fought for the cause of liberty.

The old courthouse on the town square dates back to 1891 and the grounds hold the scarred remains of the old oak tree that now marks the spot where La Orange citizens on six occasions sent its sons to battle.

There are also two interesting old homes in La, Grange. The Kreische Home, built in 1849, was made out of native, hand-quarried stone and hewn cedar timber. The Faison Home has been restored by the local La Grange Garden. The house comes from circa 1845 and has been awarded a Texas State Historical Medallion.

The Hostyn Grotto is another landmark that adds to the La Grange scenery. The; shrine, at the Hostyn Church, is a replica of the famous grotto of Lourdes, France.

For recreation, there's the Frisch Au • Village which features the old

VtOTNiE stone ruins of the ,Kreische Brewery, one of the first in Texas. There are hiking trails, horseback riding, golf and t he area. in the Republic — rural mail route in Texas — and the list :goes on.

Today, La Grange lives in the shadows of rich memories of a glorious past that began long ago on the site where an old Indian trail :known as the La Bahia ;oa,c1 crossed the Colorado River. ' QUESTIONS Many questions ..bout family finance come up in these times of rising costs.

According to a survey by the Institute of Life Insurance, More than half the public feels it does not know as much as it should about the subject.

To help provide essential information, the institute has published a booklet which gives answers to 38 key questions about life insurance. The booklet is available free by writing to the Institute of Life Insurance, 277 Park Avenue, New York 10017, and asking for the "Answer Book."

Here are some excerpts from the booklet: Q. 'Just what exactly is the cash value of my policy?

A. This feature of a permanent life insurance policy is frequently misunderstood, possibly because it calls for some technical consideration. ant here goes. When a policy is designed for the whole of life, the company in effect adds up the total cost of insurance over the expected lifetime of a policyholder. Then it works out an average annual cost, or level prarnita l . As a result of averaging, the in earlier years is', strictly what larger than the . actually cost. But in the later years, the same premium is considerably smaller than it should be, considering that the risk of death has risen sharply.

The "overpayment" in the early years goes into company reserves which must be accumulated at interest toward eventual payment to a beneficia‘ry. But, the policyholder has the right to a share of the company's reserves if he should wish to give up his protection by surrendering his pol i cy. The measure of his share is the cam Q. How can I use the cash value in my policy?

A, You' can use the cash value as

You can, later in life, turn in your policy, and take the cosh value as a lump sum, or in monthly payments, according to your needs.

If you want to continue your life insurance coverage after retirement but don't want to pay more prenuums, you can use the cash value to buy paid-up insurance either for a specified period of time or for life. (Your policy has tables to spell out these rights.)

Q. Bow can I find out how much value I have in my policy?

A. Every permanent policy has a table showing the amount of cash value that has accumulated since you have had the insurance. Cash values generally begin after the first or second year, the size depending on the kind of policy you have and the amount of insurance. The table shows the value for each year for the earlier years of the policy, and at selected intervals for later years. The company will furnish you with a value figure for any other year you yegnire.

Q. Why do I have to pay interest when I borrow on my policy; Isn't it really my own money?

A. The cash value in your policy only becomes your money if you turn in the policy and give up its protection.

Until then, it is part of the funds the company maintains to enable it to meet its obligation to you and to all the policyholders. The company invests this fund, using the earnings to help keep down the price of your insurance. Thus, any loan, including loans to policyholders ',must include interest.

I take out a Q. loan poiky and I die before I repay it?

A. The money paid to your beneficiary under the policy will be reduced by the amount still unpaid, plus any unpaid interest charges.

Q. Can I buy life 'insurance to insure me for as long as I live tut without having to pay premiums that long?

Q. Yes. Limited payment life insurance will provide a lifetime of protection in return for premium payments limited to a specified period of time — '0, 20, or 30 years, or until you reach 'a certain age, usually 65. This type of policy also builds cash values.

There is another posSibility for limited payments. If you have whole life

Incidentally, the paid-up policy will also have cash values that are useful. say in an emergency.

THE CONSUMER ALERT

By John L. Hill, Attorney General; State of Texas Perhaps you have noticed that your house could do with a little fixing up.

Or perhaps a home improvement salesman's suggestions for a new roof, aluminum siding, or a remodel job have got you to thinking about making some repairs or changes.

But, be very cautious about agreeding to any construction work until you are certain you are dealing with a bona, fide contractor who makes a specific work proposal, complete with, plans, specifications and cost estimates. There are literally thousands of Texas builders who can be depended upon for a workmanlike job.

Too often, homeowners have been fast-talked into unwanted, unneeded only to find that the so-called contractor has flown the coop, leaving the homeowner with an expensive, longterm installment note which had been sold to a finance company.

In the ligitimate construction trade, these home improvements fly-by-nighters are known as the "hit-and-run" variety. Both the Texas Association of Nome Builders and the National Home Improvement Council provide advice telling you what to expect in dealing with a reputable builder, and how to avoid improvements with the type whose offices are in the trunk of their offices are in the trunks of their cars.

Through complaints handled by members of the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division staff, we have learned that the hit-and-run operators prefer to zero in on low-income neighborhoods, but may turn up anywhere.

They know that the folks who find money hard to come by have great pride in home ownership. And they play on that pride.

The typical gambit is to show the man or lady. of the house a photogra p h of a pretty cottage finished with fancy siding. If he protests that he doesn't have the funds to remodel,

vPSTNI.K the salesman counters with an "easy payment" installment prOposal. If the customer still resists, he may be tempted with a plan to "consolidate" his bills and the improvement cost under one installment note.

One easy way to tell the unscrupulous home improvements salesman from the contractor you can count on is his insistence on getting you to sign on the dotted line right away.

A regular contractor will expect, the homeowner to get bids and estimates from three or four firms, and will present exact plans and specifications for your consideration. Also, he will tell you which financial institutions usually make loans for his company's home improvements, and ask if you would like to go. through one of them.

A fast signing with. one of the hit-and-run fellows usually leads to heartbreak and heavy expenses. In one case. a homeowner realized several months after accepting a "siding" job that the material was so thin, it bent on touch. He refused to pay any more installments on the $4,000-plus note, only to learn that the note had been sold within 24 hours after he had signed it to another company which had a holder-in-due-courSe defense against this complaints. Since papers he had signed included a mortgage on his house, his refusal to pay any :more resulted in his home being sold. By then, the fly-by-night operator had flown.

The best advice for avoiding this type of problem is: 1) Make a double check on anybody who is selling "home improvements" door to door. Remember, that auto or pickup truck has four wheels. Look to see if it has Texas license plates.

2) If the salesman asks you to go with him to a notary, or pulls out a notary seal, he probably is asking you to' mortgage your property to him as security on the note. Are you sure that is what you want to do?

3) Under the Federal Truth-inLending law, anyone planning to take a second mortgage as security has to disclose to the . buyer in writing that he has the right to change his mind within 72, hours after signing. If the purchaser is not given that notice, he may rescind the contract at any time.

4) Under the Texas Consumer Credit Code, the contractor must obtain from the consumer who signs a retail installanent transaction a certificate of completion, imprinted with these words:

19 "WARNING TO BUYER -- Do not sign this certificate until all services have been satisfactorily performed and materials supplied or goods received and found satisfactory." And, the financial institution who buys the note must give the consumer written warning that he has purchased the note, the buyer has 30 days in which to file a complaint about the goods or services.

LOW CHOLESTEROL EGGS FROM HIGH PRODUCERS Recent research at Texas A&M University indicates that the way for dietconscious consumers to) get low chloesterol e ggs is to be sure they come from high producing commercial flocks.

The research also hints that the low producing barnyard hen may be the laver of high cholesterol eggs.

These findings were aired by Dr. W. P. Krueger of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station and head of the AS-1W Poultry Science Department.

His co-workers were Graduate Student Dan Cunnin gham, Dr. R. C. Fangu y and J. W. Bradley.

Krueger said egg yolk cholesterol was measured from 67 hens in a closed population of white leghorns. Three eggs per hen were analyzed to arrive 'at the average cholesterol level for each hen.

Results showed that hens with the highest rate of lay produced eggs with the lowest amounts or cholesterol.

Krueger also noted that cholesterol making ability is heritable.

"Hatching eggs need cholesterol. The higher cholesterol egg has the best hatchability. To get one thing, something else usually must be sacrificed..

If one selects for low cholesterol, some hatchability is sacrificed," the researcher pointed out. "If we select for high hatchability, then we miss our goal of low cholesterol eggs for consumers."
