The Humble Beginning of the SPJST. More than 76 years ago, a small group of men met on the front steps of the Fayette County Courthouse in La Grange, Texas, to work out a community problem. Their prime purpose was to organize a society to promote fraternal and social activities and to provide financial assistance to widows ;and orphans who were left virtually Penniless when their husbands and fathers passed away.

Thus on July 1, 1897, the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) was conceived and brought into being; its purpose was to promote the ideals of human service among a segment of people who came to this country to establish a new home. Those early pioneers were motivated by the same spirit that spurred on the early settlers. Their wisdom in the selection Of the fundamental principles upon which the Society was founded and their unity of purpose is attested to by

From humble beginnings, through years of expansion and mergers, wars and depressions, the organization has been welded into a fraternal benefit society that has many ydars of praiseworthy service in the field of fraternal life insurance, and the many, many activities . held in about 130 active lodges throughout the state.

The motto-motivating force of the SPJST has become a part of this great country of ours. . . . peaceably progressive with the betterment uplift ever present. Just like the words "freedom" and "liberty" are both the motivating forces of our way of life, so "lienevo-

lence, Humanity, and Brotherhood," which are the mottos of the SPJST, are the motivating forces of a pioneer of fraternal life insurance in Texas.

Many fraternal activities in the SPJST embrace both adults and juveniles. Banded together in a common cause, members of all ages gathered to practice the virtues of charity, benevolence and good sportsmanship. The members come from all walks of life and represent a cross-section of the community itself. Through their lodges the members cooperate in achieving deeds that would be impossible or very difficult for any individual to achieve alone. The attributes of fraternalism . . . the understanding and consideration of others ... are much in evidence in the lodges and the newly-organized district youth clubs, which are made up of juveniles who are thus provided with opportunities for leadership, companionship, and social contacts. The preservation of the best traditions of citizenship is encouraged.

The various activities which are provided in the SPJST are many and varied. There are many contests and activities held on the local, district and state levels which enjoy a huge interest. There are qualified staffs which teach the lessons of obedience, love and service, together with patriotism

The colorful ritualr, are still meaningful and inspiriml as they were when first written. Cultural divisions are active, and these provide a wide range of entertainment from concerts, operettas, dancing F3eseda and variety shows in the adult groups, and we have singing, dancing and other various shows in the youth groups.

Some societies have a secret password, but the SPJST is n tore (loin a secret password or .no od:;hake. it is a Society built on service Io the families of America, providing dependable protection and security through plans which are not only sound, but are a beneficial investment. Bun on understanding and consideration of others, It has grown into one of the most out,standing fraternal life insurance institutions in the State of Texas.

By providing a wide range of adult and juvenile plans of protection, the SPJST offers complete fraternal life insurance service for the entire family. These certificates offer present as well as prospective members a choice of plans; to meet life insurance requirements.

The SPJST is the largest Czech origin society in Texas and owns a very modern building in the state, the home office located in Temple, which is an indication of outstanding progress.

The delegates at the Houston convention in 1952 authorized the moving of the headquarters to Temple from its original location in Fayetteville, only a short drive , from La Grange, Fayette County, Texas.

The SPJST has no stockholders and and is owned by and operated for its members. All the above facts are things to remember, thino to tell your friends and neighbors. Let us continue to build our Society so that we too, leave a heritage as our fathers did.

Four new courses in Czechoslovakian, the third most-used language the state of Texas, have been approved by the university. The action was taken in response to numerous requests from citizens.

First-year courses in Czechoslovakian 131 and 132, will be an introduction to modern spoken and written Czechoslovakian. Second-year courses 231 and 232 will include grammar review, selected readings, conversation and composition. The courses will be taught by Teofil Halama, lecturer, who will join the UH faculty this fall.

Mrs. Joe Elzner planned a lovely luncheon to surprise Wanda Kennedy on her birthday, July 2nd. A good time was had by all, and. Wanda graciously thanked each of her friends for their thoughtful gifts.

The guests at table number eight at our Saturday night dances have had several occasions to celebrate lately. We are most pleased that Mr. and Mrs. Albert Haluzan, Jr., and their children, Albert III, Frances and Margaret, who were all on vacation from Dallas, could be with us for the Texas Dutchmen dance. Congratulations go to Seth and Ruth Duncan who had a double reason to celebrate at the Gilbert Kautz dance• — their second wedding anniversary and Sister Duncan's birthday! Congratulations also to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Petras who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at the same dance. Many thanks go to Sister Della Kadlecek for giving me this information.

Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Vandever have a grand reason to celebrate: the birth of their grandson born May 23 to Mrs. James Walker. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Jarisch together with Mr. and Mrs. Vandever enjoyed a week's vacation trip to the beautiful Smoky Mountains, recently.

Repair of the lodge's front door was discussed and a new heating unit will be installed soon. A work day was set aside for July 5, preceded by a covered dish supper.

Our next dance will be July 14 with sounds by the Music Masters. The next regular meeting will be August 5; no basket lunch.

This month's door prize was won by Brother Edmund Sebesta, Jr. At this time we would like to welcome several new members into our lodge.

Fraternally, Marcia Vajdak, Reporter SPJST SOFTBALL TEAM LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Brothers and Sisters: On Thursday night, June 28, we played the Haynes Auto team and we had to go eight innings before we finally won by a score of 2 to 1, in a close ball game. Jim Scoggins hurled a one-hitter, walked one and struck out 13 batters. Leading hitters were few; Dave Ellison had a single and Paul Valenta had a single, Harry Wilkerson had a walk and Jim Scoggins and Grover Moore had sacrifice hits. We had a; nice group of rooters at the game.

Monday night, July 2, we played Genco and we won by a score of 2 to 1 in another well-played and good ball game. Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher allowing 6 hits, 4 walks and 6truck out 7 batters. Leading hitters were. Wiley Beesley with a single and a sacrifice, Connie Brennan with a single, Albin Vrana with a single, Lionel Schulz with ay double, Jeff Burton with 2 walks, Dave Ellison with a sacrifice and Lawrence Honza with a walk.

We had a fine turnout of rooters. After the game, the players and all had an enjoyable get-together.

A moment of silence was held in memory of two of our members who passed away lately Brother Clement Kolacek and Brother Eddie Fickel. May they rest in peace.

Brother Cocek was not at the meeting so Brother Joe Mazanec read the minutes of our previous meeting and they were approved as read. Brother Mazanec also recorded the minutes of this Sunday's meeting.

We have 409 active members who are in good standing with our lodge.

Brother Mazanee read the financial report of our hall, he also gave the secretary-treasurer's account; both reports show nice progress.

Brother Georg() and Sister Bena Kacir sent a nice card from Czechoslovakia where they are visiting and enjoying the beautiful and historical places in Czechoslovakia and other parts of Europe. We all wish them a safe journey home.

Brother John Popp attended the meeting; also his wife, Frances, who was recently appointed as sales representative for our lodge.

There will be no meeting on August 5th because of other activities in our hall.

The SPJST girls softball team won eight games and lost only one. A motion was made and carried that our Lodge No. 54 sponsor a trip to Six Flags. Brother Ernest and Sister Mona Zahirniak will chaperone all of the players to Six Flags.

Jackie Zahirniak won the attendance prize.

Meeting was adjourned and a nice luncheon was served after the meeting.

Our next meeting will be on September 2nd, at 3 p.m.

CHAPETR 9, FORT WORTH Dear Brothers and Sisters: It is time to remind you of ,the next meeting of the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association, Chapter 9, which will be held on July 15, 1973. It will be at the National Hall, 3316 Roberts Cut Off Road, at .2 p.m.

Since assessments have been mailed out this past week and for the convenience of those of you who would like to pay in person, the secretary will be at the hall at 12:30 preceding the meeting. Assessments must be paid in July in order to avoid paying a penalty.

The ladies are asked to please bring cakes or pastries of any kind to go with the meal which is furnished by the chapter to the members present.

To all of our members on the sick list in the hospital or who are recovering at home, we hope they will get well soon. Since my surgery I still haven't been able to go anywhere, but I hope I can get out soon.

Wilma Nesuda --8P.TSTDISTRICT IV CAMP July 30, 1973 youth club members and chaperones are to arrive at the Presbyterian Encampment ground at Buffalo Gap at. 8 a.m. This is the time our day starts and we will leave for home August 2, at 8 a.m. This is the ruling of the camp.

This is what to bring to camp: 2 sheets, pillow if you sleep on one; towel, wash cloth, soap, comb, brush, mirror, toothbrush and toothpaste, other personal needs, bathing suit, camp clothes for 3 days, hat if you need one, flashlight, fishing rod (we'll do some fishing), bring your bottle you cut last or a bottle to cut, pennies to spend at the county fair, money for soda pop and candy, but refreshments will be served as last year. If you have items or trinkets you, want to get rid of, bring them for the county fair.

Be prepared to follow rules as in our new rule book, and we can all have a good time at camp and happy memories will remain with us all.

DISTRICT III YOUTH CLUB Dear Members and Readers: The District III Youth Club will have their swimming party Sunday, July 15 at the West Playdium Pool, starting at 2 pan. We went swimming twice a day, which was so much fun and we went on hikes.

I think all the food was delicious and I would like to thank everyone who made it possible for us to go to camp this year. I really think it was so much fun.

I would like to remind everyone in District VI that YAD will be here in a couple of days. It will be on July 15, in Taiton at the Tadton Community Center.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, In February of this year, I was fortunate enough to be sponsored by the members of Lodge 88 to participate in the "Close-Up" program with my school. When you participate in

Wednesday, July 11, 1973 this program you spend a week in Washington, D.C. seeing all the historical sights, meeting and speaking with senators, representatives, and other very important people in our government. You get inside the government and get a better understanding of its functions. I know it has helped me to have a better understandin g- of how the SPJST functions.

It is a week I will never forget and I wish everyone could spend a week like that.

Now, someone else does have at chance to spend a week like that.

There is a fund being started to send a representative, or maybe more than one, to represent our lodge in Washington, with his or her school group.

There will be an auction held within the next few months to raise money to sponsor these youths' trip. What we need now are donations of gifts. We will accept any gift you care to donate. If you have a donation, please contact Mrs. Louise Knapick, me, or bring it by Lodge 88 on Thursday nights. Tickets will be sold every Thursday night beginning July 5. An announcement as to the actual date of the drawing will be made later.

Please support this worthwhile project. I know Lodge 88 and the other lodges will be behind us all the way.

Wednesday, July 11, 1973 to the bereaved family of our departed brother, GEORGE SANDERS, JR., who passed away Saturday, June 30, 1973 in a Temple hospital after a long illness, at the age of 48.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 2, at the Hope Lutheran Church in, Buckholts, with the Rev. Ervie Braun officiating. Burial was in Hope Lutheran Memorial Park.

Mr. Sanders was an active member of the SPJST Lodge No. 15. He will be missed by all. He was born in Perry, Texas, on July 17, 1924. He and. JohnInez Janes were married February 1, 1947. He moved to Buckholts in 1954 and was employed by the Dr, Pepper Bottling Co. of Temple for 25 years.

Surviving are his wife, Johnniez, of Buckholts; two sons, Gary Sanders and Calvin Sanders, both of Buckholts; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Sanders, Sr., of Temple; three brothers, Clyde Sanders and Lindy Sanders, both of Temple, and Floyd Sanders of North Dakota; three sisters, Mrs. Pearl Brown of Temple, Mrs. Ruby Schroeder of Abilene, and Mrs. Viola Wallace of Illinois.

An Austrian v 1 to escaped his native country by pretending to be a Texan bought half interest in the first bakery of Amarillo for $6.15 in 1898.

In fact, John Kollaer bought the bakery Mop twice opening the second time with a $42 inventory and • 35 cents in cash.

The late John Kollaer, who probably baked bread in Amarillo longer than any other person, got out of his native Austria on a ruse.

Kollaer had already been to America once which paved the way for his second departure.

Born and reared in the part of Austria which later became CzechoslovKollaer started an apparenticeship as a baker at the age of 12. . After serving in the army under Emperor Franz Jose p h for three years, lie left Austria, baking bread in Paris, ' Budapest, Italy, Switzerland, New York, California and Chicago.

He came to the United States on the sane ship with a group of young men from Paris. All were refused entry exept Kollaer who had a means of livelihood.

Ilonle time later Kollaer. looking for a drier climate, came from Galveston to Amarillo, just to look over the little cowtown.

At that time Amarillo's only bakery, its first commercial baker y , was the Home Bakery, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Julian Frisbee and located at 505S. 7,9 Polk, The Frisbees needed a vacation.

Young Kollaer agreed to run the place while the y took off a few days.

When they returned, business had \

so improved that they offered to sell half interest in the business to Kollaer. Stock invoice, which did not include the permanent fixtures, amounted to $12.90.

Kollaer paid $6.45 and was in business as a full partner here in 1898.

Before long Kollaer bought out the U'risbees, and it was only a few months later that he returned to Austria because of the serious illness of a sister.

Not knowing how long he would be gone, he sold the bakery before leaving.

Back in Austria he was arrested for not reporting for military service and was given -a ticket to appear before '11 court.

With no intention of returning to the military, Kollaer did a little quick thinking.

He put on his big Western hat and his cowboy boots and headed for the Austrian border. Pretending to speak no language but English, he passed around a few good cigars to the border guards.

In a matter of minutes he was across the border, on his way to Paris, and back to Amarillo.

After a brief partnership with the owner of a confectionery shop, Kollaer again bought the Home Bakery, which had closed and was in need of repair.

Painting and repairing a burned-out oven, Kollaer bought $42 worth of flour and other supplies on credit.

Putting his last 35 cents in the cash register for change, he was in business again. This time, his bride, also a native of Austria, was his partner.

He baked the bread, in his oldworld style of perfection, and she sold it.

He first changed the name to Vienna Bakery, and later to Pioneer, which he operated until his death in 1948, and which two of his sons operated until 1966.

Back in 1901 Kollaer purchased property in the 500 block on Lincoln and set up the baking operation there, with a downtown store at 405 S. Polk for bread sales.

When the bakery building was torn down in 1966 to make way for the Civic Center Complex, the brick ovens which Kollaer had so carefully constructed for his old-country methods of baking, were in perfect repair, built , to last.

Kollaer reared seven children, six of whom are still living — Mrs. George Stewart of 1219 S. Kentucky, Mrs.

Wednesday, July 11, 1973 ,Amelia, Bradshaw of 401 Arch Terrace, Mrs. June Cantrell of 2308 Atkinsen, Mrs Irene Ware of 3509 Danbury, Henry Kollaer of 3127-C Plains, and Walter Kollaer of 4127 S. Hughes. His wife, Emelia, died in 1967.

If Kollaer only pretended to be a Texan, back before the turn of the century, he truly became one by planting his feet squarely in the middle of the Panhandle and growing as it grew.

He wore a Western hat, incidentally, during the rest of his life.

HUNTING, FISHING GUIDES READY FOR DISTRIBUTION

A digest of hunting 'and fishing regulations for 1973-74 has been printed and will be distributed to the public at the earliest pre-season date ,in Texas Parks and Wildlife Department history.

The free 32-page booklet, 51/4 by 8 1/9 inches in size, is printed in two colors on an off-white opaque paper.

New features this year include a revision of regulations under section headings for quick reference, two pages of explanation and illustrations on the use of tags and permits, large state maps for the county hunting reg ulations with easier-to-read county names and a listing of PRzWD regional and district offices.

"An extra effort was made this year to get the hunting and fishing guide to the public well in advance of the corning seasons," explained Clayton T. Garrison, executive director. 'Public hearings on proposed regulations were held earlier than ever and the Parks and Wildlife Commission met on April 26 to set seasons and limits for all counties under its regulatory authority.

"As a result, this information is available in time for hunters to make their fall and winter plans, and is in keeping with our policy of getting information to the public as quickly as possible."

Copies of the guide were first sent to department offices around the state to help personnel antiwer questions on hunting and fishing regulations which become effective Sept. 1, 1973.

Garrison pointed out that the guides will be available wherever hunters and fishermen buy their 1973-74 liWnses after mici-August, 7 1973-74 licenses, which reflect ses established by the 63rd Legislature, are scheduled to be mailed to all issuing agencies on Aug. 10, Garrison said and will be available to sportsmen the following week.

"All of our license de p uties --- and these include sporting goods stores, fishing and hunting camps, marinas, grocery stores, bait shops and tackle departments of hardware and d.euartment stores -- will have the new guides as they issue licenses," he said. `Since all are required to post new bonds' for the coming fiscal year to qualify as license agents, the guides will be delivered beginning July 16 to all deputies who have filed public official bonds with us."

While the new regulations booklet is both early and comprehensive this year, certain processes in establishing game and fish regulations are still incomplete and will be listed in subsequent publications. These include: Dove Map, a single letter-size sheet with North and South Zones shown on state map and information on seasons, limits and regulations for mourning and white-•inged doves, gallinules, rails, snipe and woodcock. Federal guidelines for state regulations are normally received in July for Parks and Wildlife Commission action.

V1113 P&W TO INVESTIGATE 200-POUND NILE PERCH Parks and Wildlife Commissioners gave the green light to department biologists to start work on evaluation of the Nile perch for possible importation into Texas waters.

The Nile perch is the common name for several tropical species of African fish which live in a wide variety of drainage systems and large lakes in central and northern Africa.

Looking much like a native largemouth bass, the Nile perch grows to mammoth proportions, sometimes reaching 200 to 300 pounds.

What in the world is Texas going to do with a 200-pound perch?

One of the more critical problems with Texas lakes is maintaining a viable sport fishery in the large, manmade reservoirs which lack predator fish in adequate numbers.

The warm waters of lakes used to cool electropower plants present even more problems.

Most of the recently introduced "exotic" species of fish such as walleye and pike are cold-water fish and cannot survive in the bathtub-warm waters of power-plant lakes.

A. recent world-wide study by fisheries biologists has found that the Nile perch is the most promising fish for such warm waters.

The comprehensive on-the-site study of the life history of the Nile perch and other African fishes will determine whether they will adversely affect native sportfishes such as largemouth "amass, crappie and catfish. Before importation, biologists will be sure that the perch will complement native sportfishes.

Since the Nile perch cannot survive in water below 60 degrees, a final control is built into the study in that the fish is confined to power plant lakes. The water temperature in the lakes during the winter can be lowered by temporary halting power production and killing the perch if the fish proves to be harmful in some way.

Texas has 41 existing lakes which are used to cool electropower plants and as the demand for power increases in the future, an additional nine lakes are expected within the next three years.

The anticipated 50 lakes represent a tremendous volume of water in which sportfishing could be improved with the introduction of a warmwater predator.

Most of the lakes have public acccess and stocking would be done only in those lakes with such access.

As in most new lakes, bass fishing in Calavaras was hot at first but rapidly declined.

"Crappie fishin g' is on the upswing," said Gholson, "average crappie weights are tip to one pound in recent months."

In February, 1972, some 15,000 crappie were taken from Calavaras and 16,000 in March of 'the same year.

Gholson and the rest of the Parks and Wildlife Department's inland fisheries staff hope that Johnston's striper wasn't a one-shot deal.

Striped bass could offer tremendous sport in a lake as heavily fished as Calavaras.

That's not all. Almost two decades ago, Texas highway engineers decided that the shouldells also should be paved. That provides the motorist an area where he can get out of the main lanes of traffic in any weather.

It also helps eliminate "drop-offs" often encountered at the edge of the pavement where shoulders are not paved. In an emergency, the shoulder provides the driver that much more recovery room. And, there is another plus, the paved shoulder helps keep moisture from under the pavement.

And water in the road base causes pot holes in the pavement.

The next logical step is what engineers call crown width structures.

That simply means that bridges are built wide enough to include both the main lanes and the shoulder areas.

But concern for safety does not end at the shoulder's edge. Texas Highway research has pointed the way toward flatter slopes for roadside ditches and the elimination of potential hazards within 30 feet from the edge of the highway.

Some things, like highway signs, cannot be removed. In that case, they are designed to break away on impact.

At other potential hazards which cannot be moved, guardrails or attenuating devices are installed to protect drivers and passengers.

The ultimate in highway design for safety is the multi-lane divided highway. A wide median separates opposing streams of traffic, all but eliminating the danger of head-on collisions. And the median adds extra recovery space for the driver should his vehicle leave the roadway.

But it is not always possible to provide a wide median. In that case, new median barrier designs have been developed to prevent vehicles from crossing into the other lanes.

A new concrete median barrier on new Texas highways not only prevents crossing into the opposing lanes but helps slow a straying vehicle and redirects it into the roadway.

Like other major safety improvements, this design was exhaustively tested before it made its appearance on new Texas highways. In actual tests, the barrier worked even though the test vehicle was a 50,000 pound truck.

This is all well and good for new highways. But Texas has some. 12,000

VtSTikiIi. miles of primary US and State numbered highways which are old, obsolete and potentially dangerous. Many of these highways are crying for reconstruction now. All of them will have to be rebuilt by 1990 for the safety and convenience of the public.

The problem is money. Assured and continuous sources of finance are necessary to provide highway improvements on an efficient and logical basis.

Holdbacks of highway user taxes paid into the Federal Highway Trust Fund and inaction of Congress in passing Federal Aid Highway Act have slowed highway development almost to a standstill in Texas and across the nation. Schemes to divert money collected in taxes associated with the operation of motor vehicles further threaten a comprehensive, coordinated program of modernization.

To provide the highways Texas will need by 1990, highway work should be moving forward at the rate of $1.2 billion worth of work a year. This year, the highway program in Texas will be about $500 million short of that figure.

----,9PJ MOZART AT BERTRAMKA

There is no denying it, I am very fond of Bertramka. I love the place when the air is heavy with jasmin scent; I love it when the soft sunshine in the fall brightens up the colorful carpets laid out in its garden; I love it in winter when the roofs over the Isalla terrena are white with snow and the lights shining in early-evening twilight draw bizarre shadows all over the building. Perhaps it is because there is hardly another place in the whole world where the "genius loci" has remained as genuine and undisturbed as here, The house in Salzburg where Mozart was born is situated in a busy, noisy street. As for Vienna, why that city does not even know where Mozart is buried. Mozart's biographer Schuring put it very succinctly: "Salzburg let Mozart to be booted out of the city by aristocracy, and Vienna was indifferent to his poverty and hunger. It was only in Praha he found his truly happy days."

Mozart's happiest days were spent at Bertramka,. It was in the fall of 1787 when he arrived in Praha to finish his supreme feat in operatic art â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Don Giovanni.

Following the enthusiastic acclaim extended to him in January 1787 and the successful performance of "Figaro's

Wedding," he promised to compose an opera for his beloved people of Praha.

He kept his promise. Arriving in the last days of September, 1787, he brought with him the partly finished score of Don Giovanni. For a few days he stayed at the U Tki Lviekii, Hotel at Uhelny Trh Square. Soon, however, his genial hosts Mr. and Mrs. F. Duc3ek prevailed and made him move ti Villa Bertramka where he could work completely undisturbed.

Enjoying the comfort, he had at his disposal two rooms on he northern side of the building and the whole garden. M.r.&Mrs. Du:sek were known as patrons of good music in Praha.

There was 'something going on in their house at all times, and Mozart had no cause to complain of lack of company or diversion. In fact, the original date set for the opera's first performance had to be postponed. Thus the Archduchess Marie Theresa and her fiance Anthony of Saxony, passing through Praha, could only see Flgaro's Wedding.

Even the new date, October 29, came into doubt when it was found that there was no overture. We shall never know what actually transpired for Bertramka remains stubbornly silent on this point. Opinions differ, but let us quote Mozart's biographer FrantiSek Nemeeek: "The opera was finished and it was to be performed for the first time on the following night. Only the overture was missing. Finally, on the night preceding the great day, having enjoyed hisself sufficiently, Mozart withdrew to his room around midnight and within a few hours produced a most marvellous piece of music ... The copyists were hard pressed to produce sufficient number of copies of the score for the opera orchestra. The orchestra, whose skills Mozart was well aware of, did a wonderful job playing the overture prima vista."

The acclaim accorded to th â&#x20AC;˘ new opera on the very first night at Stavovske Divadlo Theatre on October 29, 1787, made cultural history. Bertramka became a witness of Mozart's great joy as well as the fulfillment of the aria "Bella mia fiamma, addio" (Farewell, my lovely flame). A story has it that Mozart composed the aria in a garden pavilion where his hostess locked him up. Trying to outwit her, Mozart set a stiff condition, viz., that he would dedicate the aria to Mrs. JoseMina Duskova provided she would sing

She succeeded in this.

However, everything has an ending, even the nicest things, and Mozart's second stay in Praha had to come to an end also.

He visited Praha on two other occasions later on, but did not meet JosefMa again. He did stay at Bertrarrika in 1791, but that visit bore the mark of the failure of his opera "Titus" and of his illness and gloomy foreboding's. Having composed the aria "Io ti lascio, C cara, addio" (I am, leaving you, dear, farewell), he had tears in his eyes when taking leave of his friends, as the biographer Nemeeek noted.

On December 5, 1791, Mozart died in Vienna. Jesefina rendered him posthumous homage during the performance of Rosetti's Requiem. She extended a helping hand to Constance although she was herself in financial difficulties. Later on she helped both of Mozart's sons as well. In 1799 she sold Bertramka, and in 1804 appeared on the stage for the last time. Twenty years later she died in poverty.

For scores of years now people have been making pilgrimage to Bertramka paying homage to Mozart's work and to the music of his Czech friends, with the poet's verse on their lips: '`Ah, he used to walk, to recline, to play here.

This is where he stopped on a shaded path.

This is where he smilingly agreed with his host.

This is where he bowed to Madame Josefina..."

But he won't guarantee any specific weight loss, because he knows that each body type has its own way of metabolizing.

That doesn't satisfy the craving some people have for "instant beauty," so they are quickly attracted to the advertisements which claim, "Lose 20 pounds in 20 days."

Many become disillusioned when they

But wait a minute: Were those "before" and "after" pictures really of the same person? Or, was one photo taken in poor lighting while the subject slumped to increase the girth of abdomen, and: the other photo taken under glamor conditions — with tummy sucked in, chin up, and chest out?

The Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division has received many complaints about operations of some "health studios" which specialize in claims of an almost-instant metamorphosis for the overweight person.

Through our own investigations, we have found that sometimes the photographs are misleading.

And other deceptive trade practices by some health spa operators are being uncovered in state and federal complaint follow-ups.

Owners of legitimately operated health salons are cooperating in the investigations. And there are many of these establishments which do serve a useful and healthful purpose.

After all, the average person — especially, the average overweight person — lacks the intense discipline required to monitor his or her eating habits, and stick to an exacting program of exercise. And they can use a little group therapy to keep them inspired in the war against unwanted pounds.

Unfortunately, they are sometimes prey to the type of operator who would promise them anything, and too often, the result is a flattened wallet, instead of a trim figure. Some of the deceptive practices you should be on the watch for include: —The "bait-and-switch" tactic, in which the operator advertises a claim that his studio can rid you of 10 pounds in 10 days, or 20 pounds in 20 days (there seems to be a magic in twicerepeated numbers), but when the consumer ,goes to sign up for the quick course, she is talked out of that, and talked into a more expensive longterm contract.

—The advertised inference that the facilities will be there for you to use at your convenience. Often, it is discovered, the times are very limited, and if your own schedule changes, you May not be able to take advantage of the program for which you have paid.

—The heavy pressure to buy a "life"

V nedeli 22. dubna vykonali elenove Csl. besedy v Hercegovci (Yugoslavia) svou valnou hromadu. Zahajil ji predseda Besedy, Josef Korab a v üvodnirn phvital vSechny pritomne, jakoe i zastupce sl. svazu Vaclava.

Doleaala a zastupce Jednoty, novinate Mirka Grabara, predsedu unstni pospolitosti Ivu Drljanoveana a predsedu Chorvatske eitarny pana CyjetiCana.

Po upteni pamatky Clenü zesnulkch v uplynulem obdobi se prikroeilo k dennimu poradku.
