Shiller, a 96-year-old resident of Rowena means so much to the West Texas community and surrounding areas, including the SPJST Society and numerous longtime acquaintances, who assembled Sunday, May 27 to pay tribute to a distinguished member and friend who has fulfilled his mission of 69 years of devotion and distinction in the SPJST. Limo welcomed the well-wishers and expressed her sentiments to Dr. Shiller for this memorable occasion.

SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska was the principal speaker, and presented Dr. Shiller with a check for the face value, of his certificate. Brother Mikeska's speech appears under "Features"; therefore we will abstain from repetition of the haDpenhAn,. sister Julie Lisso presented him with in honorary Membership in Lodge 49, Rowena. Also a certificate in honor of the occasion from Tulane Alumni Association (Tulane University). recogniv;ing DT. Shiller on the observance of the 70th anniversary of the University's Class of 1903.

Those of you who are familiar with Dr. Shiller will admit that his life's story is a sensational and interesting one; it is worthwhile saving the article about him because most of us may not witness or read another article of this type for a long time. Among the other speakers were SL 'Honorary President Edward L. Marek, Brother George Ruppert and Editor Rudy Sefeik; all of whom expressed appropriate and encouraging words at this occasion. Also under "Features" in this issue, refer to Brother Ruppert's remarks, spoken in behalf of the host lodge members and Dr. Shiner's close associates. Other visiting guests included District IV Director Stanley Broz and wife, the editor's wife and sons, Brother Otto Hanus and Miss SPJST Kathy Simeik.

In the past issues of the Vestnik, we saw articles and accompanying pictures of the 21 SPJST recipients who outlived the actuarial table of their insurance certificates; sometimes when we read the articles or stories of these happenings, it does not create the effective and emotional feeling until you are among those present to witness such a tribute and to hear the inspiring words being delivered in honor of the recipient. When we speak of Benevolence, Humanity, and Brotherhood we must admit that it was definitely exemplified on Sunday, May 27, in Rowena.

Upon our first acquaintance, Dr. Shillor impressed me very much and became a personal longtime friend who is modest, understanding, sympathetic and very optimistic; also one who never gloats over his accomplishments nor glorifies himself over his numerous achievements. Presently, he is still the same gentleman who has the admiration of all of us in general and

Today, the entire SPJST Society and editor extend heartfelt congratulations to an esteemed member and friend.

THE FINE ART OF BOYHOOD If there's a puddle he's in it, if there's a dirt pile he's on it, if there's a candy store he's for it. A sprinkler and hose on a June afternoon can't wait for a bathing suit, a baseball game with left field poison can't be postponed for dinner, a creek with crawdads can't exist without a iew boys as well.

Every now and then you run into one, or more likely one runs into you a bundle of raw energy enthusiastically practicing the fine art of boyhood. Snips and snails and puppy dog tails all over, face smeared with whatever it was he ate last --- peanut butter and jelly, chocolate or dirt -hair going a hundred which ways, shirt unbuttoned, to say nothing of his trousers. Through it all a pair of bright eyes and a grin that make him look like a young Gabriel.

Breathes there a man who does not sigh as he recalls his boyhood? To day he can only relive those days by enjoying — or at least suffering patiently — as others much younger practice the fine art of boyhood. Remember? (Thanks, Bro. liejny. —Editor).

• • A&M Grads to Czechoslovakia Three Texas A&M University gradu ates who will teach at El Campo this fall will study Czech Czech() .lovakia, this summer.

They are Clifton and Irene Wenglar of Victoria and James W. Mend], Jr., of College Station.

They will study at (;lea lea liniverbay in Prague with a „Intent group headed by Joseph J. Skrivanel. of Texas A&M. The group departs Jutie 4, and will include other 'EAMil SLsden.Ls and graduates, students irom the University of Texas at Austin, Temple Junior College and Rogers. 'they will return August 22.

Each student can earn 12 semester hours credit in Czech through the Modern Languages Dept. at Texas A&M University.

• Brother Calvin Cervenka of Temple visited our office before his departure for Prague, Czechoslovakia. District III Sales Representative Alvin Nesuda also paid us a nice visit while enroute to the insurance seminar which he held at Lodge 66, Waco, June 8.

• Emilie Matocha, 75, of La Grange, passed away in a, Weimar hospital on Friday, June Est, following a long illness. Funeral services were held in La Grange from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in the Plum Catholic Cemetery. Sister Matocha was a member of Lodge 100, La Grange.

Dr. Shiller. Sister Pauline Shiller, Guests, and many Friends of Dr. J.J. Shiller: A TRIBUTE TO DR. J.J. SHILLER All of us iron( the Supreme Lodge consider it an honor to be here today to participate in this tribute to a great and wondeilul man. In one of the feature stories published in our Vestnik Herald, President Morris referred to Dr. Shiller as the "Grand Patriarch of West Texas physicians." I think the term is quite appropriate ; for Dr. Shiner indeed stands out among Texas Doctors.

In iollowing the life and career of Dr. stiller, you feel like you're reacting a chapter out of an epic, a chapter out of a great life story covering a. great span of time, and most importtilty, I eives the lite and work of a to my toeoevolent and good person. We are plea,ed that so many of you have come here today to pay tribute to this fine gentleman.

We of the SPJST have come for a very specific purpose --- that of presenting a check in the face amount of an SPJST life insurance certificate that Dr. Shiller bought when he joined our Society on May 13, 1904. Our life insurance certificates endow at the age of 96, which means that Dr. Shiller has outlived his insurance policy. Dr. Shiller was born on February 23, 1877, and thus reached age 96 this past February.

He is the 22nd member of the SPJST who has outlived the actuarial table on which their insurance was written.

He has been a member of the SPJST 69 years.

Sixty-nine years ago, when he was 27, Dr. Shiner joined SPJST Lodge 32 in Victoria .On July 2, 1928, he transferred to SPJST Lodge No. 49 here in Rowena.

'In speaking of Dr. Shiller, one must speak of the life and work of a typical country doctor. "A slice of past America", as a Temple Telegram reporter recently stated it. I don't know how many people Dr. Shiller treated in his lifetime, how many .children he helped deliver, or how many wounds he healed, both physical and possibly mental. But I know that these figures would be quite impressive.

When Dr. Shiller donated all his medical aquipment and instruments to our SPJST museum in Temple, the Temple Telegram printed an article on

Dr. Shiller. I would now like to read to you that article written by their reporter, Mr. Kent Kilpatrick.

"A lone figure appears in the driving rain. A country doctor, astride his horse struggling through a sucking river of mud that was once a road trying to reach an outlying farm in time to deliver a baby.

"His saddlebag with his meager supply of medicines and instruments would come as a shock, too, in this time of medical specialists and modern hospitals.

"Most people have not seen these trademarks of a country doctor in the early 1900s, and many of those who have, do not remember.

"A worn saddlebag containing the remnants of his early medications in their original vials and a small container of essential instruments were all Dr. Shiller started with after medical school at Tulane University.

"In those days there were not enough hospitals to give internships to all the graduates, so we were just turned loose to make the best we could of it!

Dr. Shiller made the best of it until he retired in 1959 at the age of 82.

He began his practlico in Victoria County where his p arents had moved in 1897.

In 1902, Dr. Slither married Miss Annie Louise Shiller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Shiller of Victoria. Then he moved to Praha, where making a living was difficult. He bought out Dr A. Musil at Moravia in Lavaca County where he spent 7 years. From Moravia he moved to the city of Victoria where he established an office. A short time later, he and his wife decided their move to West Texas, and they came to Rowena in 1913 . and they lived together until Mrs. Shiller passed away on July 16, 1930.

A sick man, conscience-stricken at having summoned his doctor at two in the morning, apologized profusely. I'm sorry about the hour, Doc, and I know my house is somewhat out of your way, too." "Oh, that's all right," reassured the doctor, "I have another patient who lives near you, so I'll visit him and just kill two birds with one stone.

There was a marksman who always boasted of his prowess and one day, when he was out with some duck hunter friends, a lone duck came flying over. Watch this, he commanded his fellow hunters. He aimed and fired once and the duck flew on. "Off with your hnt ,4, men," he said with awe, "you are viewing a miracle a dead duck that flies!"

We are today honoring Dr. Shiller, a man who definitely was never either of the above t ypes. He never tried to "kill two birds with one stone" as such and he never boasted of his prowess.

He was always a dignified, humble man who always gave his very best, not just the 1 , rst but the very best. We pay honor and homage to a man of distincti on. d i st 'nguished by many qualities, be rYun by dedication to career and communi ty , guided by sacrifice and determination, the career now ended in gratifying success, a community of people ever thankful and appreciative for a real service provided. Dr. Shiller's achievements and service cannot be measured but only reported as an outstanding total commitment. Also, all the achievements cannot be recalled, but certainly the doctor has a great store of memories, the good times sprinkled with the bad times as fate would have it. I am here, in behalf of the members of the local SPJST Lodge No. 49 and the many friends of Dr. Shiller, assuring him that we recognize his great contribution to Rowena and surrounding areas and that we will always cherish him.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Symmank, of Carrollton and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Motl of Temple, and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C. Johnson of Dallas.

The Rev. James Hamer officiated during the double-ring ceremony, and Miss Barbara Jordan of Denton, organist, provided the wedding music. Mrs. Durward, giminger sang "The Wedding

A rehearsal dinner was held at the Little Bit of Sweden, hosted by the bridegroom's parents.

The bride is a 1971 graduate of R. L. Turner High School of Carrollton and attended El Centro Junior College in Dallas. She is presently employed by Southwestern Telephone Company in Dallas. The bridegroom is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School_ and the University of Texas at Arlington.

He is presently the principal of John 23rd Catholic Junior High School. in Oak Cliff, Dallas. After a wedding trip to the Gulf Coast area, the couple will make their home in Dallas.

The altar was flanked by candelabras with greenery and spring flowers. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of embroidered silk organza over peau-de-soie. The empire waistline and a-line skirt were trimmed with imported lace and satin ribbons. Her short sleeves, high neckline, and the bottom of her gown were trimmed with matching lace edging.

Her long chapel-length veil fell from a Camelot-style head piece of silk organza and imported lace.

atop a white pearl Bible.

Miss Beverly Vanicek, cousin of the bride, served as maid-of-honor. Miss Donna Symmank, sister of the bride, served as junior bridemaid. They wore powder-blue gowns with a high empire waist. Moss green ribbon was featured on the empire waist. The, girls carried bouquets of spring flowers and baby's breath and moss green streamers.

Serving as best man was John Gano of Carrollton. Groomsman was Don Alan Vanicek, cousin of the bride, of Carrollton. Ushers were Charles Johnson of Dallas, and Louie Daily of Bryan.

III )45 To Houston REVIVED LODGE NO. 74 LOVELADY FINALIZES PLANS FOR OPENING AND DEDICATION The new lodge home of SPJST Lodge No. 74, Lovelady, (BorovY Haj) is nearing completion, according to R. J. Hafner, president of the lodge and contractor for the construction. Plans were completed recently for the opening of the hall.

The opening of the hall is planned for July 4, and the formal opening and dedication is scheduled for Sunday, September 2, precedin g Labor Day Monday.

On Wednesday, July 4th, the doors of the new lod g e home will open at 12 noon• A meal will be served from 2 to 5 p.m., consisting of Czech sausage, barbecue beef, beans, potato salad, slaw, tea or coffee, all for $2.00 for adults and $0.75 for children under 12. Visiting dignitariqs will be re•-

cognized at approximately 3 p.m., followed by a dancing hour from 4 to 5 to a local band. A youth program 13 planned from 5 to 6, followed by a Performance by the Larry Pridgen Square Dancers of Crockett at 6. The hour from 7 to 8 p.m. is for general relaxation and socializing and for the purchase of tickets for the dance, which gets under way at 8 p.m. There will also be games and prizes during the entire afternoon sponsored by the youth club and operated by them.

SPJST members from around the state are being asked to attend both Cates in their Czech costumes because of the festive occasion, Big plans are also being made for the formal opening and dedication on September 2.. The revival and recent growth of Lodge 74 is- a real success story in the best tradition of American enterprise and personal initiative. Supreme Lodge yecords in Temple show that in 1958 the lodge had only 32 members, having grown very little since its organization and charter in 1934. Toward the end of 1971, and especially in 1972, District Sales Representative Lad Zatopek from Temple called on the one organizer in that area, Brother Chester Shmoldas. They called on a few prospects with success, Brother Shmol das phased out part of his broiler business and really went to work Selling SPJST insurance, so that by the first week of May of this year,' tbe lodge roster had grown to 195 members. (This number will no doubt increase considerably by the time of the opening and dedication). The mcnt-bership list continues to grow quite rapidly. After that, Bro. Shmolclas, with the continuing encouragement of Brother Z • topek and the new dodge president, Brother R.J. Hafner, continued in his successful efforts in

By now, several lodge members and officers formed the nucleus of the . lodg e "working team:' The revival and subsequent growth of Lodge No. 74 is truly a fine example ,of what can be done by someone with determination in a lodge that is coinTletely dormant. in a rain at 9:30 a.m. with Mr. Lesiker, driving the big Greyhound in usual fine style. By the time we reached Georgetown, the rain fizzled out and the sun peeped out now and then until we reached New Braunfels. The big Greyhound really ate up the road in less than two hours.

When we arrived, the crowd was just beginning to gather and after a good meal served by the Czech ladies of New Braunfels, we visited with people from almost all parts of this great state until 2 p.m. when we proceeded to a big outdoor stage and dancing floor to start the program. The first performance was of cur Reseda group with the following meni0ers pertforming: Leon and Vallie Zavotiny, Dorothy and Laurin Gaines, Emily and Floyd Stuteville and Laverne and Johnny Vanicek, and, with their fine performance, it was easy to win first place for the second straight year. Next, the Seaton Choral Group rendered four fine selections, but the response was so great that we gave them a few extra songs.

Next came the Lodge 84 Junior Beseda Group with an outstanding performance that was a real pleasure to watch.

After the program, the Seaton Choral Group with Ed. Kadlecek, Jr., CzechFest chairman, with his fine accordion and our accordionist Ralph Milek, were surrounded and some real singing began that lasted for quite some time with some of the crowd chirping in now and then. In the meantime, a fine family band had set up and begun 'to play some fine dance music and most of us started dancing and continued until 7 p.nr.

Matilda and I were met there by our Billy Clay, granddaughter, Barbara Dugi, great-grandson, Billy Wayne Dugi daughter, Fiore/ice, and son-in-law, and our youngest great-granddaughter Darla Jo Dugi, whom we have enjoyed very much..

At 7 p.m., some of us started for the bus because we had agreed to leave New Braunfels at that time, but with everyone having such a good time, we didn't get to leave until 7:35. The weather was fine, it was cloudy most of the day so it was ideal for a good time.

We arrived in Temple at 9:15, tired but having enjoyed the day very much.

We missed some of our fine choral group who just couldn't make the trip for some reason or another and we sincerely hope that all of you will be able to make our next trip wherever that may be. The Seaton Choral Group

Fraternally, Clarence Krejci, Vice President —SPJSTNew Braunfels, Texas Dear Readers: The Czech-Fest in New Braunfels turned out very well this year and we want to congratulate the Beseda dancing champions, both from the SPJST. The Junior Division was won

by SPJST Lodge No. 84, Dallas, led by Mrs. Bessie Petr. They will be the State Czech Besecla, representatives featured at the Texas Folk Life Festival in San Antonio, September 6 thru 9th. The day that they will perform will be announced later.

The Senior Division was won by the adult Beseda group from Seaton Lodge No. 47, led by Leon Zavodny and have now won that trophy for two years. If they don't get some stiff adult competition next year, they will get to keep the trophy permanently. The trophy will be engraved and on its way, soon.

We certainly enjoyed and appreciated the Seaton Choral Group coming to the Czech-Fest and their excellent singing was enjoyed by all. Ralph Milek and myself played accordions under the beer garden trees and had many singers having a good time. Mrs. Annie Jakubec, the group's song leader,

V tISTNiiK is fortunate to have such an enthusiastic group and they certainly do a. good job under her direction. Seaton came out in a bus this year and really made a day of it. Many people were taking pictures of the groups dancing and singing. Several San Antonio photographers were there and I'm sure we'll see some good news coverage.

KJT and KJZT have assured me that SPJST is in for some tough competition next year.

Miss Czech-Fest of 19'73 is Cheryl Ann Kvesta of San Antonio. She is a beautiful and talented girl who is very active in KJZT activities and is a leader for her area. She was so impressed with the Beseda dancers that she wants to start a dance group in her San Antonio area. I have urged her to do so and promised to help. She will be available to attend several Czech festivals during the year of her reign, so if any of you people working With your area Czech days are interested in her appearing at your celebration 'under the Czech-Fest- sponsorship, please drop me a line.

Competition for the Miss Czech-Fest title is open to any Czech girl 16 or over and I'll try to get out an early .announcement next year so that anyone wanting to enter will have plenty of time to do so.

We had a big turnout for the Saturday night dance with music by Lee Roy Matocha's band, but we were saddened by the news of his mother's passing away. Lee Roy couldn't be present, of course, but his boys were excellent, as always.

Sunday night the George O•sak Band played and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their music. Orsak's band is really unique in that there are two fathers playing and the other four musicians Are their sons who range in age from 8 to 13. They play fine music and are a real up and coming band.

I'll say so long for now and thanks to all of you who came out and again, congratulations to SPJST for the Dallas and Seaton Beseda dancers. Keep up the good dancing!

Our schedule of events coming up is the Shiller-fiejl reunion, June 24; the Leon Shifters' silver wedding anniversary, June 30; regular monthly meeting, July 1, at 3 p.m.; and a dance by the Vrazels on July 3.

We lost one of our members recently, John Maresh. We all stood in a moment of silent prayer in respect for our lost, brother.

The attendance was very small, but that was due to the stormy weather we had and also the Catholic church festival that was held the same afternoon, so that too made a difference in our attendance.

Recording Secretary Brother Frank Cocci; was absent, so Brother Joe Mazanec read the minutes of our previous Meeting. They were approved as read; he also recorded the present meeting which we had Sunday afternoon.

Brother 1Viazanee received several letters from various lodges; these were read.

Brother Mazanec read the financial and treasurer's reports and both are good. We now. have 403 active members and all are in good standing with our lodge.

Brother Mazanec received several dividend checks; some he delivered personally and those who live out of town he mailed to them.

There was no other business to discuss and the meeting was adjourned.

Our next meeting will be held July 1st at 3 p.m.; lunch will be served after this meeting. We hope to see more of you members come to these meetings.

After the social hour with the entertainment of recorded music by. Brother Torn Caraway, a dinner was served, consisting of barbecued chicken and sausage and all the trimmings and cakes, coffee, and puhch for dessert.

We had quite a few visitors including Mrs. Appa Steinman from Lebanon, Ohio, who is visiting her son, Brother Donnie Steinman and family. Also several sisters and brothers from Lodge 92. We enjoyed having them all.

Brother George Korteff had surgery Monday and he seems • to be getting along real well. He was happy to have his newest great-grandson, Brian Scott Ramsey, and Erian's mother, Sister Carolyn Ramsey of Oklahoma, to visit him over the weekend. Jack Ryder of California, husband of Sister Flora Korteff Ryder, will be entering the hospital next week for serious su;gery arid we send our best wishes for his recovery as soon as possible.

We also extend our get-well wishes to Sister Christine Zich of Lodge 92.

Brother Eric Koch is doing, better and he hopes he can attend our next meeting.

We enjoyed a visit with our great nephew, Bernard Havran, and his wife, Kathy, from Boulder, Colorado. He is the son of Brother Bernard Havran and wife Agnes, of Cortez, Colorado.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members, That interesting quilt show sponsored by the Birthday Club Sisters on May 16th was a great success! Chairman Birdie Hilsher and Birthday Club President Wanda Kennedy and their helpers did an excellent job, of arranging the "first" for our lodge. The Houston Chronicle covered the event with a half-page article including pictures.

Our lodge celebrated another successful Splash Day on June 3rd. A big crowd was present to enjoy the delicious Willie Wehring beef barbecue and to dance to the good music of Vrazels and Donnie Wavra and the HiLiters. Lee Roy Matocha was unable to be with us that day because of the death of his mother, Mrs. Emilie Matocha; our heartfelt sympathy is extended to Lee Roy and the rest of his family.

NO 97, PLACED() Dear Members and Friends: I have been asked why I don't write to the Vestnik any more. To be honest, I feel somewhat guilty because I never have anything to say about what we are doing in our lodge.

I know everybody is looking forward to reading the Vestnik what other lodges are doing. I judge that for myself. Frankly, I like to read what other lodges are doing because in our lodge a meeting is always the same; same number of people 'and same faces; just five members present. Oh, pardon!

Maybe once a year, we would have 6 or 7 members present; usually that's when the books are being audited.

First, I want to say: many thanks to Brother and Sister Matt Vanek for inviting us to their District VI Sales Representatives' Banquet at M'aeker's Place. Also, I must mention there was no shortage of food and drinks including the wonderful music that Their sons provided. I believe there were some others in the band who I didn't know; I must say that they furnished beautiful music for such young boys. In fact, I got to dance to their music and I didn't get out of step. Boys, keep up the good work, it was wonderful to see such young boys who furnished such fine music.

Brother and Sister Vanek can be proud of their sons to do so well. I hope they will repeat that next year and won't forget us. Again, many thanks!

Now, I will have an excuse not writing in the Vestnik. Actually, I am having; eye trouble lately. My eyes were not in top shape before this came up. I was always saying: that I am blind on one. eye and cannot see out the other, Now it appears as if I cannot see out of either one! But, I am not giving up hopes because I am too young in heart to give up, and I have stopped counting the years a long time ago. (Jaksi bylo a jaksi bude.) Nazdar!

DISTRICT NO. H YOUTH COUNSELOR This is a report on two activities held June 1st and June 4th. On June 1, 1973 Lodge No. 155 Austin, elected a youth leader and an assistant leader. The youth leader is Sis. Dale Jezisek and her assistant is Sis. Gloria Ebner. Lodge No. 155 Austin organized a youth club with nine youth in attendance.

The president is Michael Wood; Secretary — Janet Hejl; Treasurer — Terry Ebner and the rest of the youth members will take alternate terms in being reporters, historian, flag bearer and committee chairman. Youth Leader, Sis. Dale Jezisek and her assistant, Gloria Ebner, seem to be two members who are interested in the youth of Austin and that just might be what Lodge No. 155 was needing to get their local lodge more active and growing. I hope that this youth club will put a spark in this lodge so they may enjoy the activities that are being offered by our SPJST. The mother lodge also held their meeting that night. Brother and Sister Lad Zatopek were present at this meeting. I would like to thank Bro. and Sis. Lad Zatopek for their help and also my wife, Irma, for helping with the snacks which were enjoyed by all following the adjournment of the meetings.

Report No. 2 — is the District No. II Skating Party which was held June 4th.

This party was a great success. Everyone seemed to have a good time and we had a very, very good turnout, There were 95 children and 5 adults skating for a total of an even 100 skating.

There were about 10 children and about 40 leaders and adults who did not skate, for a grand total of about 150. I was so happy tc see over a 100 children from our district having a good time together that it brought memories to me of being at our summer camp with so many children. We were very pleased that 9 of the youth clubs were present. For this party we were privileged to have with us, for the first time, 16 members from Lovelady all the way from East Texas. Other youth clubs represented were Rockdale, Beyersville, Taylor, Holland, Granger, Buckholts, Cyclone and Seaton. Thank you so much for coming and bringing your children to this party. It sure does 'add a lot of enthusiasm whenever so many come out.

After the skating, we all went to the Ferguton Park, where the children

played some more. Snacks, sandwiches and refreshments were served and the food was plentiful.

We were glad to have Sis, Dorothy Massey, our SYD, with us for this party. I would like to thlnk Sis. Massey for taking some pictures and for installing the District No. II youth club officers. The following officers were installed: Frankie Novosad, President (47) Ronnie Rieger, Vice President (29) Deborah Haisler, Secretary (24) Michael Ellison, Treasurer (15).

Kevin Cavanaugh, Reporter (20) I wish to thank all of the youth leaders and their assistants, and the parents for bringing so much food, for bringing their children and furnishing transportation for other children because without you, this could not have been possible and to all the children, thanks for coining.

I would also like to thank Bro . , and Sis. Jerry and Pat Tomastik for getting and bringing the soda pop for this party, also for furnishing the ice which was used to cool the pop. Also, a thank you to the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company for donating two cases of Dr. Pepper to the youth of District No. II. A reminder that your deadline for craft, talent, and royalty entry forms is June 19th.

Dear Readers, Our youth met June 3rd at the Wall Volunteer Fire Department. Our new

Before our scheduled meeting, we attended the mother lodge meeting.

We still discussed YAD and the group talents. Then we set a date for an activity — Thursday, June 7th to tour the General Telephone Company. Also we will be practicing our talent.

We have changed our July meeting to a weekday. We shall meet at the Lakeside Swimming Pool on July 11th for a meeting and a cookout. Everyone feels there is too much going on Sundays during the summer months, so we have changed our meeting dates.

We have a new member; her name is Lisa Priesmeyer.

LODGE NO. 160, SAN ANGELO Dear Readers, On June 3rd we held our regular youth club meeting at the Wall Volunteer Fire Department.

We attended the mother lodge meeting. To me, it was interesting to listen to their reports and the procedure went fast. This meeting was the first; meeting for the newly-elected officers.

They are President Laddie Socha, who is my uncle; Mr. Brenek, vice presi,dent; Mr. Louis Pelzel, secretary; Mr. Frank Havlik, treasurer; and Mrs. Clyde (Lillian) Williams, financial-secretary.

This was also my first meeting since I've been elected youth club president.

I must admit it was well worth presiding and was enjoyable. We discussed YAD which was held at Abilene, Sunday, June 10. _

After the meeting we held a Bunco party with the adults joining in later which created so much tun. Lucky winners were Debbie Braden, 1st prize and Cheryl Pelzel won the boobie prize.

Refreshments were served.

Remember, our next meeting will be held July 13. Afterward, we will go .swimming at Lakeside.

The visitors were Mrs. Clarence Priesmeyer, Mrs. Bill Yockey, Lori Ladering, Mrs. Marian Dluhos, Mrs. Harry Zboril, Mrs. Elmer Treumer, Mrs. Mary IVIrunstik and Mrs. Stanley Blaha.

We discussed going to camp on June 25. The camp applications were to be in by June 6. YAD is going to be held in Taiton on July 15 and each member was told they could enter in craft and participate in the talent. We also discussed having an outing On August 26 at Meek's Camp. The meat for the dinner will be furnished by the club and the mothers will furnish the trimmings.

After Lisa Priesmeyer was introduced as a new member, everyone joined in and sang songs. We sang the "Little Skunk," "Old Lady Leery," and "The More We Get Together."

The birthdays for this month were Diane Dluhos, Russell Zboril and Chris Hajovsky. "Happy Birthday was sung to those members.

The food committee for next month is Mrs. Bill Yockey, Mrs. Jerome Dorotik and Mrs. Pete Merta.

The doorprize winners were: Lisa Priesmeyer, Jean Dorotik, Russell Zboril, Roxanne Yockey and Chris Hajovsky.

After the meeting everyone enjoyed refreshments of ice cream and soda water.

RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY Sis. Juanita H. Trlica, of 3712 Minot Ave., Fort Worth, passed away in Harris Hospital of that city on Sunday, May 20th, 1973 at the age of 62. She was born in Fort Worth on February 26th, 1911.

She was a member of Lodge Komensky No. 20, SPJST, having been accepted into membership on April 8th, 1941.

She is survived by her husband, Bro. Albert P. Trlica of Port Worth; one son, Thomas H. Trlica of Fort Worth; her father, E. Kirby Smith of Groves; and one grandson.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in the Robertson-lVfueller-Harper Chapel in Fort Worth with the Rev. Thomas Tribble officiating.

Entombment was in the Greenwood Mausoleum, Fort Worth.

The land at that time belonged to Dr. Stevenson, a Civil War veteran who received this land grant. This first Seaton School was the alma mater of my father and mother and many other pioneers in this area. Frank Edward attended school two years. He has stated that he spent most of his school time in the pasture behind the school.

Through the years of 1891 and 1892 in Seaton one more child was born. Joe William was born on December 4, 1891.

They lived on the Frank Lesikar farm for two years. In 1892 they decided to move again, this time to the community of Westphalia in Falls County. The Hoelscher and Giestman families were farming and prospering there so the Heil family rented and moved on one of the Frank Hoelscher farms. Incidentally, the Hoelscher and Giestman families came from Europe on the same boat as the Hejl family. Grandpa and Grandma were fluent in the German. language and they were close friends with these families.

In the two or three years they lived in Westphalia another child was born, William Frank, on January 7, 1894. It was also in one of these years at Westphalia, that Charles Hejl, an uncle to Grandpa, came to live with Grandpa after emigrating to Texas. It was here that he died, a single Man, age unknown to me, and the cause of death also unknown. He is buried in the Bar• clay Cemetery in an unmarked grave.

He evidently came to America with his brother, Ignac. Mention is made of

them in my Frank Hejl hi g t o r y.

The three years of farming at Westphalia were not satisfactory for Grandpa and Grandma Vince Hejl. The nearest school was in Barclay. It was too far for the three oldest children to walk, so they did not attend. Therefore, the quest for a better life continued.

Through some friends who are unknown to me, in the year 1894, Grandpa Hejl bought a farm in Waller County. That year, in the fall of 1894, they loaded their belongings in a boxcar in Burlington and again moved, this time to Waller County. This move was made with seven children. This farm was close to where Prairie View College now stands. The house was visible from the Hempstead to Houston highway. They lived on this farm for six years. In Waller their family increased by two more sons: John B., born on October 2., 1896; and Jerry E., born on November 14, 1899 '. Here in Waller, with a large family, was where they really had to struggle to make a, living. Frank Edward, my father, in his teens at the time, worked out on any seasonal job he could get in the area. He was baling prairie hay for 50 cents a day from sunrise to sunset.

From the year 1896 through the harvest seasons most of his time was spent working for his relatives in Nelsonville.

He related, many times, that he, at 15 years of age, rode horseback from Waller to Nelsonville, some 40 miles distant. Another incident lie related is when he helped move one of his relatives to Sealy, which one or from where is not known to the writer. After arriving , at San Filipe on the Brazos, they had to wait three days before the

Frank Edward was confirmed on May 31, 1896, at the age of 15, in the Nelsonville Brethren Church by the Rev. Anton Motycka. Frank Edward stayed with his uncle, Frank Mares, in Nelsonville while studying for confirmation.

Many Czech families were living in the Waller area at this time. The Vince Hejls were neighbors with the ,Marunas, Horavas and Vaniceks. The land in Waller was not suited for row crop farming and not too productive.

They kept working their farm until the fall of 1900, at which time the area was hit by the catastrophic Galveston Storm. Crops were a total loss and the Hejls lost their home — a cruel blow when the struggle to make a living was so hard.

Disheartened and disappointed they did not lose their spirit. They decided to abandon their farm with what they had in it and move back inland to Bell County. They rented a boxcar in Waller and for the third time, loaded their possessions and again headed for Burlington in Falls County by rail.

This time with a family of nine chip dren.

They arrived in the latter part of, December, 1900 to a previously rented farm owned by John Lesikar, Frank Lesikar's oldest brother, in the community of Cyclone. This is the second farm southwest of the Ocker Brethren Church. It is now owned and occupied

by Frank Lesikar, son of John Lesikar.

On this farm in Cyclone, with good land and hard work, they prospered.

22 They made good crops every year.

Cotton produced a tale per acre. They were contented among neighbors composed of the Mareks, Talaseks, Schillers, Chupiks, Pechals, Babovecs, Holans, Zabciks, Motls and others. They had only a short distance to the Ocker Brethren Church, which was built in 1893.

One year while living here, the winter was very cold and wet. The black dirt roads got so bad they couldn't be traveled in any kind of a vehicle.

Grandma's flour bin was empty, so someone had to go get some. Grandpa saddled the horse and sent my father, Frank Edward, who was about 12 years old, to Rogers for a sack of flour. My father often remarked, `(to this day, I wonder how I ever made it." Most of the time leading the horse, he brought home the flour. However, in a few days they lost the horse.

In the three years of living in Cyclone, their three oldest children were growing up. Frank Edward, my father, was nearly 22 years old. Their oldest daughter, Anna, at 20 years of age, married Louis Babovec from Ocker on October 25, 1903 in the Ocker Brethren Church.

In the year of 1903, John Lesikar, then living on a farm of his own in Seaton south of the Hruska and Jae Lesikar farms, decided to move to his farm in Cyclone on which the Vince Hells were living. He wanted to sell the farm where he was living in Seaton.

He offered good terms to Grandpa Hell if he wanted to buy that farm. They bought the 100-acre farm and in the winter of 1903 they moved to that farm.

This farm had only about half of the acreage in cultivation. They worked hard, clearing more land and made' /good crops.

Their third child, Albina, married on May 7, 1905. She married John Chupik whose parents were living in Ocker.

They were married in the Ocker Brethren Church. In the fall of 1905 their first son, my father Frank Edward, married Emily Lesikar, daughter of Joseph Lesikar, on October 29, 1905. The Lesikar family lived at Seaton on a farm adjoining north of the Hejl farm.

The marriage was performed by the Rev. Henry Juren in the Ocker Brethren Church. Witnesses were William Hejl, Joseph Lesikar and Joseph R. Marek.

In Seaton, grandpa's family worked hard, saved and prospered. In the fall

VPSTNI: of 1906 they had enough money to pay off the note on the farm. However, the note was for a longer term of years and Mr. John Lesikar would not accept the money, so with this money the Hejls decided to build a new house. In the year of 1907 they built a three-room, two-porch and storeroom house with ample room upstairs. Every room was sealed with beaded ceiling throughout, with an offset border about 30 inches high. They painted it inside and outside. It is remembered by me as always looking neat. They lived the rest of their lives on this farm and in this house. Through their span of life spent in Seaton, they farmed, raised their family and took an active part in church and civic affairs of the community.

In the year of 1906, the Seaton Evangelical congregation organized.

The members were from Ziskov or Harris Ranch, Ratibor and the surrounding area of Seaton. All families were of the Czech background. The means of travel at that time were only buggies or horseback. That made it difficult for most of these families to attend worship services at Ocker. They built a church on an acre of land from the Joe F. Sefcik farm, east of the cemetery. Grandparents Vince and Rosalie Hejl were charter members of this group and they took an active part in the congregation.

Their fourth child, Henry W., left home when he was wed to Aloise Babovec on March 1, 1908. They were the first couple to marry in the Seaton Church.

The Seaton SPJST Lodge No. 47 was organized in 1903. It is not known what year Grandpa Hejl joined. He was a member in 1905 as he was elected on the committee to find a suitable place for the building of a hall. This motion passed in the October 1905 meeting. In the spring and summer of 1906 Seaton Star Hall was built, with Grandpa taking an active part. The Hells signed up all their children in the SPJST. They both had their heart in the SPJST. Grandpa seldom missed a meeting. He was also a member of the RVOS Fire and Storm Insurance Group and a firm believer in it.

The young men of Seaton and the surrounding area, in 1901 or 1902, felt a need for some form of recreation.

They organized a young men's club.

They named it Cesko 1Viora yska Bratrska Jednota (CMBJ). They were holding their meetings in the new Seaton

School on the location where the present school is now. Membership was limited to single men. A picture of this group is now in the SPJST Archives.

The group met regularly, sponsored a reading club, and invoked fraternity and brotherhood throughout the area.

Even before the SPJST lodge was organized, they built a platform on which they sponsored dances. This platform was located in the northwest corner of the Frank Lesikar farm, just off the road to Seaton. This was the farm the Hells first lived on in 1890. While sponsoring these dances, they were haying some trouble with some rough, unwanted cowboys. These cowboys appeared at one of these dances and behaved in total disrespect to the young ladies and everyone present. The members of the CMBJ took matters in their own hands to put a stop to this. They engaged the cowboys in a free-for-all fight. One of , the members, Mr. John Kohut mangled one so badly that he later died. After hearings in court, Mr. Kohut was not indicted. My father, Frank Edward, was a member of this club and related that they never had any more trouble from those tough boys.

On June 18, 1911, Vince J. (age 22) married Julia Labaj from Ziskov or Harris Ranch which was settled by mostly Czech people in the early 1900s.

This community is about five miles northeast of Temple. The writer presently owns the southeast corner of the then Harris Ranch. Joe W. (age 21) married on November 24, 1912, to Frances Ondrasek whose mother and family resided and farmed about two miles east of the Hejl farm. This left the Vince Heil family with three more boys at home, Joe W. being the sixth one to establish a home of his own.

Grand parents Hejl were hard-working and conservative, and through the years built up their homestead. They bought a windmill and built a watertower house with a small room in which they had a bath tub. This kind of a water system and bath house was popular in those days.

Grandpa built a cellar, half underground, with brick walls sealed inside with mortar. The'cellar was covered with a low shingle roof. This was ideal for his grandsons to climb on and slide down. The tin ridge row was riddled with shotgun pellets. Grandpa could not stand the hooting of an owl at night. This is where many an owl lost its life with a BANG from Grandpa's double barrel shotgun.

V roce 1832 kcupil dfun ace K. H. Borovskeho a v prizend si dal vybudovat kram. V tomto dome protil BorovskY nejen radostna studentska leta, ale atm se stal take svedkem smutnYch tivotnich Ostidtl rodiny HaVliekovy. Cdehrala se zde riaprikla,d srnutna seena Havliekova loueetd s roofnou dne 16. prosince 1851, kdy byl Havlieek odvezen do vy/inanstvi do
