FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK We would like to mention that When We visited the District VII meeting in Floresville, we saw many of our longtime and newer friends and, District VII being in a, more rural area of our state and farm work is in full swing, it was very gratifying to see a good attendance at the meeting. This reveals that there is interest in our districts in the affairs of our Society. • Sunday, May 27 will be a Special Day in Rowena, Runnels County, for an esteemed member and longtime friend, Dr. J. J. Shiller, when relatives, friends and members of Lodge No. 48, Rowena, the Supreme Lodge officers, and editor will honor him during special ceremonies for cutliving the actuarial table of his insurance certificate. A huge turnout is expected for this memorable occasion in this small community. For further details refer to "Features." Our acquaintance as a personal friend is not an overnight story. It is an interesting one in which we also feel certain that Dr. Shiller could teach us more about the history of the SPJST than all of us who are at the helm of it know, for he knows and remembers some of the good faithful pioneers of Fayette and Lavaca Counties who were the most essential roots of the SPJST Family Tree, and to hear him express his sentiments about three pioneers, cannot make you forget about the

We assure you that Dr. Shiller has excelled these mottos for 69 years in the Society and since our 1958 acquaintance. Your editor wishes to include, in his remarks, that his only child, Sister Pauline Shiller, has indeed pursued that similar pattern of fraternalism. In fact, both of them are an inspirational asset to all of us in the SPJST and their community. In this generation gap, we need more people of their caliber. Your editor and family all feel honored and privileged to be a part of this eventful ceremony this Sunday. More on this subject later. • 4, The troubles of the individual cannot be solved by his fellows in any system of civilization; they must react upon
the community, and be borne collectively. The widow left unprovided for with a family of children is not, and cannot be ignored; the breadwinner has gone but his work is undertaken, somehow — by taxes, by relatives, by charity, by life insurance, that is by others. The realization of this outstanding fact in our civilization is now thus impressed on our minds and out of this period of conflict and strain through which we are passing a new outlook more enduring and infinitely greater, we hope, will emerge. A recognition that it is vitally necessary to protect the homes of our nation from all kinds of distress is imminent and this may be done only by some means of cooperation. A few years ago we had a very prominent politician who sometimes had a gleam of intelligence and occasionally spoke. In one of those rare combinations he once said that true laws are not enacted, they are discovered. The peculiarities of human behavior in the matter of death which, for lack of a better title we call the "Law of Mortality" was discovered, not enacted, and upon this "law" we have erected the whole structure of modern life insurance. And what is that law? Simply that, given a sufficient number of people of known ages, we can by ascertaining
