FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK We promised to write about the publication of names of members who are due to receive premium refund checks. Lodges are requested not to publish the names of recipients — except for members who cannot be located. Also it is unnecessary to request stamped, selfaddressed envelopes because lodges will receive 10 cents from the SL for mailing cost for each refund check sent to the lodge during the year. Our delegates and membership will find a letter from District III Director Pokladnik in the, letter section expressing his thoughts. You are advised to read it and give it your consideration. • A man who speaks two languages is twice a man — thus runs an ancient proverb now transated into many tongues. The language of a particular people is its own distinctive method of expression which can be transcribed but never exactly duplicated in any other language. Therefore, he who has mastered two tongues broadens his intellectual and emotional sphere; new understanding and growth are his for the taking. Language gives identity to a people just as it characterizes an individual. Listen carefully to the. inflection of a man's voice, his choice of words, the cadence and rhythm of his speech. Do they not disclose something of his individuality? Both Chief Justice

THINGS WORK OUT Because it rains when we wish it wouldn't Because men do what they often shouldn't, Because crops fail and plans go wrong Some of us grumble the whole day long. But somehow, in spite of the care and doubt It seems at last that thing's 'work out, Because we lose where we hoped to gain, Because we suffer a little pain, Because we must work when we'd like to play Some of us whimper along life's way. But somehow as day will follow the night, Most of our troubles work out all right. So tend to your troubles and meet your care, For the clouds must break and the sky grow fair. Let time rain come down as it must and will, But keep on working and hoping still, For in spite of the grumblers who stand about, Somehow, it seems, all things work out. Hughes and Franklin Roosevelt were masters of English, but their languagewas as different as their respective personalities.

Why learn Czech? First, to enhance the richness of your life by adding to it the best of the old world art and culture. There are, of course, many other reasons. What do you think of a man who is ashamed of his origin? Is he not one who would likewise forget family, friends, and similar bonds if he found it more convenient? Pride in national origin is a noble sentiment, the loss of winch would considerably impoverish not only ourselves but the American nation as well. The greatest. of world figures have been the first to acknowledge their blood ties. If the renowned English philosopher, Herbert Spencer was proud to call attention to the Bohemian blood in his veins, what greater reason do Czechoslovak-Americans have to indicate , their descent! Need the race that produced a Komensky, Jan Hus, Zizka, Tyrs, . and Masaryk bow its head before any other? Learn to speak the tongue that will further affiliate you with a nation that is respected the world over. Phychology have shown how much easier adjustments are made within a group that has common interests, tra dition& and ideals. Why the people identify themselves with a club, university or city? Because these associations answer a deep seated emotional urge. It is possible to be loyal American citizens, true and helpful to the land of
