FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK The much talked about three-act operetta presentation, "Babicka a Moravy" or "Grandmother from Moravia" has become a reality for a second performance which will be presented Sunday, February 25th in the Chandelier Ballroom at Lodge 88 in Houston, commencing at 2 p.m.

Hlahol Dramatic Club is accredited for numerous productions since its origin and now it is entering its 53rd year of existence. This club has acquired an outstanding and interesting history. In 1916, when the first Czech play "Zenska Vojna" or "Women's War" was presented, the group of 33 members (at that time) probably didn't realize the first play would someday become part of the cultural backbone of Lodge 88. Since then the CZech club has been fortunate to have had so many capable directors in the past who stimulated interest and integrity to their numerous successful performances, and weathered through three wars to preserve the Club Hlahol.

Actually, a person cannot supply enough adequate adjectives about all the actors and actresses who have contributed so many countless hours of their time and effort to the performances in Czech and English. Both of us had the pleasure of being active for a certain length of time, and we realize what an inspiration it creates to all the

Brothers and sisters, when we refer to the Hlahol Dramatic Club, we feel that the entire membership of the SPJST Society should be proud of this Czech club which is still in existence today. All of us should also point with pride to the dedicated fraternalists who have been instrumental leaders and actors of this outstanding dramatic club.

When we focus our thoughts and interest on the youth of today, we should also focus our interest and stimulate enthusiasm toward the Hia.hol Dramatic Club, so we can help preserve

this the only Czech club in the State of Texas. Let's set aside a date: February 25th, with Hlahol Dramatic Club and give them our support!

• • Did anyone ever get your goat? Some decades ago there was an old custom of placing a goat in the same stall with a race horse. The companionship of a goat, it was believe soothed a thoroughbred horse.

It happened at times that the owner of a competing horse in a race would cause the goat from the opposition stable to be stolen overnight, which often fretted the horse so that he would be worthless the following day.

They "got his goat." When anyone or anything "gets your goat," it means that you have lost your poise. Poise is the secret of happiness and success. It is the control of the mind.

Without mind-control things are bound to go wrong.

Mind accommodates but one thought at a time. A cheerful thought, a kindly thought, a constructive thought, can easily be substituted for those of anger, bitterness, contempt, and hatred, as well as the petty, annoying things which ,dominate the mind without poise.

Without poise no mind can be truly just. Without poise no man can be fair to, himself and others. Poise is the control of reason.

Wednesday, February 21, 1973 Whether he ever finds it or not, every normal person has within him an element of greatness — the same kind of greatness found in the heroes in our headlines. For our Creator is impartial.

If you dip a cup into the ocean you come up with a cup full of water that contains all the elements of the ocean itself. So it is with greatness — the greatness in each of us. The quality is the same. It's what people do with their cupfuls that tells the story.

We draw upon this endowment of greatness in varying degrees. All of us exert a subtle influence on the persons around us. It can be a positive or negative influence — determined by our habitual attitude toward such things as personal integrity, self-respect, moral obligation. We can, if we choose, draw upon our inner resources and be great! And in the long run, the progress of mankind is going to depend more upon the grand total of these cupfuls of greatness — including yours and mine — than upon the shimmering greatness that shines in the lives of the world's noblest leaders.

One corporation executive keeps an hour-glass at his desk. He does not use it to time his long-distance calls and he does not use it to time the boiling of an egg in his office. When asked what use he made Of his hour-glass, he answered that he kept it there to remind him to do just one thing at a time and to do it well.

As the man turned the hour-glass over, and watched the thousands of tiny grains of sand tumbling down, he said, "There is a great deal of activity going on there. Every one of these little grains of sand is on the move, but only one grain at a time can get through the small part of the glass. It, too, had many things to do, but had to do it properly."

Fear of criticism by others often holds us back from trying some plan or idea that has occurred to us. Criticism comes cheaply. It can be made by anyone on any basis. The merit of any idea is seldom determined by the criticism leveled against it. Only one thing counts: the results that are obtained from the idea. What others may say will be changed to a chorus of praise once we have demonstrated the success of the same idea upon which those very individuals heaped enormous criticism when it was first presented.

Features NOTICE: Our Czech heritage is about to be recognized!

The University of Houston is seriously considering offering fully accredited courses in our Czech language. We are proud of the fact the Czech language is the third most spoken language in the state, following English and Spanish and we feel accredited courses in the Czech language should be made available to students at the University of Houston.

To make this a reality — students and citizens who are seriously considering or interested in learning the Czech language at the University of Houston now or in the near future, should contact Mr. John Karas at 1810 Wakefield Dr., Houston 77018, or the Vestnik, so that we may present these facts to the University.

The story of this lovely operetta portrays the way of life of the people in a crowded city, and the quaint customs Of the pleasant folks. There is both humor and pathos woven throughout the play, and you will he listening to the many beautiful simply Czech melodies of long ago.

VESTNfIC CZECH OPERETTA IN HOUSTON Only one week until the stage curtain will draw open at Lodge Pokruk Houston No. 88, to present to the awaiting audience the beautiful Czech Operetta "Babieka z iVloravy."

The story is very intricate, because of Grandmother's plans as she — Oh! I cannot reveal the plot that Grandmother has in stole for you. You, yourself will have to witness what our dear Grandmother has on her mind.

All through the play are songs, some with happy melodies that will awaken every fibre in your body and you will feel floating 'round and 'round. And, then again, a melody of such a sentimental song as (Dornove, domove) "Home, Home" a solo by Stefanka and later the chorus accompanied by Otto Urban, our virtuoso on the piano. There again you will feel that warm, soft feeling creeping into your heart and without being aware of it a tear will fill your eye and slowly roll down your cheek. I assure you you will follow the play with interest and enjoy every second of it The chorus also deserves a mention; as the play, progresses, the chorus has a very important part all through the performance.

Our food committee will prepare a delicious dinner for you to enjoy, before, the stage curtain will open at 2 p.m.

You will have some time to spent and visit with your friends, before "Grandmother From Moravia" will arrive. We are loocking forward to see our friends from surrounding towns; Rosenberg, East Bernard, Wallis, Ei Campo, Shiner Wei/mire Ennis, Fort Worth, Taylor, Temple etc. We received word from Dallas that the Czech Wornens' Circle are looking forward to see our friends are planning to come by bus. We are anxious to welcome you and make you feel at home at Lodge No. 88.

The pledge of allegiance was recited by all present.

There was a moment of silent prayer for our deceased members, Brother John Becan and Sister Agnes George. ....Brother Milan made welcome Sister and Brother Leo Mages, and Sister Leona Tesar and Sister Naizer, who hav-

3 en't been to the meetings in quite awhile, We hope they continue to attend.

All of the officers were present and the minutes and reports were approved as read.

Brother Milan read a thank-you letter from our SL President Nick A. Morris. We haven't heard any reports of his condition, but we all hope , all is well and that he has a rapid recovery.

We missed Sister and Brother Ray Johnsons; they are recuperating from a bout with the flu bug. We also missed Brother Koch, but he was celebrating his grandson's first birthday; Little Michael Slay Hennessey. He is also a member of our lodge.

Brother Wilbur Mason won the door prize and turned it over to the building fund.

After the meeting adjourned, everyone enjoyed the social.

The Friendship Club had a real nice turnout; twenty-six members and fourteen gentlemen were present.

After the meeting, "Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Hromcik, Kozel, Polasek, and Gribble. Sister Mary Saldana wcn the plant. We all missed Sister Jeanie Mason who got caught by the bug. After the blessing, a delicious lunch was served and games played. Sister and Brother Tirk, you were in our thoughts.

We were happy to have Sisters Gee and Tillie Gillis to join. Our next meeting will be March 7th at 10:30 a.m. with Sisters Angie Polasek, Gee, Belota, Tails Gillis and Esther Walker as the hoetesses.

Brother Pete Dvorak was back in the hospital but now is back home. We hope he is much better.

Sister Sharon Connelley, our assistant youth counselor, was missed at the youth club meeting Sunday. She has her leg in a cast and is on crutches and will be until about May. Brother Korteff reported that Brother Jimmie Kret is getting along real well Sixteen of our gymnasts attended the AAU meet in Bedford last Saturday and several won ribbons and the following received medals: Janice Jarnigan, Kelly Stoeppelman and Terri Riehl.

On the same day in the TCU Invitational meet our Ellen Poston took 1st place, Lori Hajek 2nd place, and Kerri Phipps first place in her ager group.

We all wish Sister Mary Juran of Lodge 92, a happy birthday. She was a4 years young on the 12th. Financial Secretary Brother John Kolaja, gave his report on our financial statement, and the number of members in the different classes in our lodge. Treasurer Adolph Mucka gave his report. The Auditing Committee reported finding the books in good order al the last audit.

Dear Members and Friends, Wasn't that a big surprise to wake up Friday morning to see a white blanket of snow on the ground again?

This time we had a true Texas norther blowing with it, so it was hard to keep the whole house well-heated and comfortable. Hope this won't repeat itself next month when we'll have potatoes and a few other vegetables in the ground.

The February meeting opened at 2 p.m., Sunday, February 11, by President Charlie Matcek. The pledge of allegiance was recited by all present, and we all stood in silent tribute to the deceased member, Brother Frank. Kunz, who passed away on January 23, 1973.

We miss Brother Kunz very much, for he and Mrs. Kunz, in spite of their advanced age, attended our meetings quite frequently, and we have always enjoyed their fellowship. Our entire membership wishes to extend our sincere sympathy to Mrs. Kunz and her family.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting and since there were no corrections, the

President Charlie Matcek brought up the subject of a picture he had seen in the paper of one of our officers, Brother John Kolaja, who was honored by the Needville Parent-Teacher Association. He u as asked to participate in the panel discussion on their regular meetlng, February 7 at 3 p.m. However, this was all a pretense to get him there because it turned out to be "This Is Your Life," for Mr. Kolaja. On this special occasion, both of his children were present. Dr. Kolaja, his wife Charlotte, and their sons, Brett and Keith. His daughter Lillian Marie Thompson flew in that morning, from Denver, Colo.

Others who came to complete his surprise were: Benita Walzel, a pupil of his at Foerster, and his brother-in-law, John Hlavaty of Bryan, an ex-pupil of his at Center School; his brother, Tom Kolaja and wife Janie of Damon; and Mayor Eric Tielke of Needville. Mr. Harris, principal of Needville High School, was Master of Ceremonies, assisted by Dr. Herbert Schumann. This occasion, full of surprises, was con-

Wednesday, February 21, 1973 eluded by presenting a Life Membership P-TA pin to Brother Kolaja, by Supt. Louis Ludwig. Sister Kolaja was presented a beautiful corsage by President Mrs. Jamison of the P'-TA Association.

Another thing Brother Matcek brought up was about the surgery of President Nick A. Morris. We decided that a get-well card would be in order for him. Please get well soon, Brother Morris.

Since our last meeting get-well cards were sent to Sister Matilda Slacalek and Toni Danhause, and Brother Clarence Reichle. Sister Slacalek is still in the hospital and may undergo surgery for kidney stones. Brother Reichle is back at work and Sister Danhouse is fine, too. At the present time, Brother Bohumil Fojtik is in the Veterans Hospital in Houston; and having surgery on cataracts in Columbus Hospital are Brothers Edward Kuban and Sister Pauline Grabarkievitz.

The lodge members wish all of them a , ,edy and complete recovery.

Refund checks were given out and the door prize was won by Sister Stella Mucka.

A fine lunch was enjoyed by all present. Our next regular meeting will be held March 11 at 2 p.m.

Fraternally, Emily Kolaja, Reporter — "Czech Play", in Houston, Feb. 25 — LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE Dear Members, Our lodge met on Sunday, February 11, at the Grant Building with a very good attendance. President Frank Za'bransky convened the meeting, which was followed by the pledge to the flag led by Vernell and Kathy Zak. President Zabransky then introduced the guests we were honored to have, they were District VI Sales Representative Matt Vanek and Sister Henrietta Vanek and two of their sons, also District VI Youth Counselor Elsie Brdecka and Brother Frank Brdecka.

Installation of officers then took place with Brother Matt Vanek installing: the officers into their positions and instructing them of their duties.

Wednesday, February 21, 1913 Assistant Youth Leader — Margie Gallia, Reporter — Patsy Zabransky Brother Matt Vanek recognized our retiring secretary, Charles Holy, and acknowledged that Brother Holy is one of the leading sales representatives in District VI. Brother Holy was then presented a beautiful inscribed plaque

by President Zabransky in honor of his 36 years of faithful, and loyal service to the SPJST and Lodge 4. Congratulations on this great honor, Brother Charles Holy!

Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved.

Correspondence followed.

He also announced that he has application blanks for anyone to fill out if they would like to apply for lodge sales representative. Brother Holy also read the audit report that was prepared

by Johnny G. Konvicka, Jr. After a ,short discussion, there was a motion made and seconded to pay the auditing committee for their services. The motion carried. Another motion was made to pay the ladies who served on the entertainment committee. The motion passed.

Youth Leader Helen Zabransky then gave a report on the youth club.

The president then asked for nominations for youth leaders and assistant for the new year. There were no nominations, so this matter will be taken up at our next meeting.

It was then announced that Sister Gay Galetka is planning to apply for lodge sales representative. The lodge approved her and wishes her much success.

The committees for the coming year were named by the president. They were appointed by the president and vice president, and are as follows: Resolution Committee — Hilmer Galetka, August Holub and. Maryln Sevcik Audit Committee — Chas. Holy, Milton Miculka and Erwin Holy.

Entertainment Committee — Hermerina Vasek (one more to be named).

Our guests were asked to speak to those present. Sister Brdecka reported on the activities for the youth that are planned such as camp, YAD, state YAD and royalty. Brother and Sister Vanek also spoke and they were well received by the lodge. The lodge enjoyed having these guests and hope they will visit us again, soon.

VESTNIK Refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned. Refreshments and lunch were served.

February birthdays were honored, with Marcie Holly receiving the cake.

Fraternally, Patsy Zaloransky, Reporter - "Czech Play", :n Houston, Feb. 25 -® LODGE NO. 169, BRENHAM Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 169 of Brenham held its regular meeting on Sunday, January 21st at the Firemen's Park Kitchen. We had a fairly good turnout of both adult and junior members.

Col. Leon Nowak called the meeting to order at 5 p.m. Minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer's report were approved as read.

Mrs. S. H. (Mollie) Ewell and Gene Nowak were appointed to the Resolution Cbmmittee.

It was made known that there will be a district SPJST meeting in Brenham on April 8th, 1973. The youth members are planning a program for this special event. A brief discussion was held on plans for this district meeting.

The Audit Committee was not ready for the annual report; however, it will be made available for the next regular meeting scheduled for Sunday, March 25.

The meeting closed at 6 p.m. followed by eats and refreshments which were enjoyed by all. Miss Julia Zientek played several musical interludes with her accordion for entertainment.

"Babicka z Moravy" ("Grandmother from Moravia") is being performed again by popular request, and one lady who attended the operetta last year thought the actors should be in grand opera, they were so good!

Because of a very small attendance, only a few matters were discussed at the meeting. However, those members present voted to send Brother Nick Morris a get-well card during his stay in the hospital.

After the meeting, the district plans to furnish a band for a free dance starting about 4 p.m. so let's all help make this a short district meeting and have more time for fellowship with each other.

Fraternally, Alvin Sef cik; District V President — "Czech Play", in Houston, Feb. 25 — LODGE' NO. 165, MOULTON Dear Members: The meeting of February 11 was called off because of several funerals on that day. The next meeting will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 11.

All members of the lodge are usually held on the second Sunday of the month.

Much of the talk now is about the second snowstorm of the season which left snow in places up to 4 or 5 inches deep or more. Many children got a chance to see the white stuff for the second time in their lives. They did their best to enjoy it while it was around because of the large population of snowmen, snowwomen, and snowchildren that occurred.

Again I will remind you that the next meeting will be held on March 11 at 2 p.m, Sisters of the lodge furnish the food and the drinks are furnished by the lodge. Everyone please try to attend the meeting.

NAOMI KOSTOM . President of the Hla.hol Dramatic Club, has been the accompanist for most of the operettas which have been performed at Lodge 88. She will appear on the stage in the role of a supporting character in "Babicka z Moravy" on February 2,5th.

TIM KOSTOM . . . An extremely busy and active member of Lodge 88, he holds the records for having appeared in more plays in the last 40 years than any other actor and with interest in the Illahol Dramatic Club at high ebb at all times. At present, he directs the operetta. "Babicka z Moravy" and is also included in the cast.

MILO KAREL . . . A capable and talented actor, currently serving in the capacity of assistant to the director; lie will appear in the operetta, "Babieka z Moravy," on February 25h. He contributes a great deal to the club through his enthusiasm and love of the theater.

JOHN ZEMKO, a promoter by natural instinct, he came to the Hlahol Dramatic Club because he enjoys acting* and singing and because he "likes the guys in it." A small but important part is being portrayed by him in "Babicka z Moravy" and as a character, his talent is an asset to the club.

For the Choral Group and Dramatic Club Hlahol, Brother T. S. Kostoni reported that the Choral Group has numerous requests for appearances at various functions and he invited the members who are interested in joining the Choral Group to do so.

He called particular attention to the Czech play `'Habieka z Moravy" which will be presented at Lodge 83 on Feb.

District V, Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska reported that Sales Representative Helen Hegwood won first place and Sales Representative Della Kadlecek won second place.

Lodge Historian Birdie Wisher displayed a photo of the laying of the cornerstone of Lodge 88 in October 1934 and requested members to assist her in recognizing those in this photo so she can, in turn, forward this information to Supreme Lodge Beadquarters. The translation of Czech minutes into the English version will be inserted into the existing minutes for future use when the need 'arises.

Vice President Horelica was requested to assume the gavel and District V Director, E. J. Hanka reported that District V meeting will be held on March 18 and will be hosted by Lodge 175, Rosenberg. He urged all members to attend because the Spring: meeting is the most important meeting.

District Officers will be elected and many important issues will be resolved and discussed. He noted that three new district directors were in attendance at Supreme Lodge Headquarters and that the cooperation and interest of the entire body consisting of Supreme Lodge officers and directors works in harmony and for the best interests of SPJST..

Assistant Youth Counselor Tom Caraway advised the members that he recently attended Galveston Lodge 173 and he was advised that the lodge is sponsoring a booth and will participate in the Boat Festival in Galveston. Bro. Caraway advised that Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris was in favor of Lodge 173 participated in this event and Lodge 173 requests aid in this function such as loan cf artifacts of Czech origin, etc.

AMERICAN SOKOL ORGANIZATION

I regret that I did not get my report into the Vestnik for the month of December, in January, but everythin' went so fast after the first of the year that before I knew it, January was gone. I hope that you will forgive me for being a month late with the DecembA: report because I am sure you were looking for it.

We had a very fruitful year in 1972.

We reached our quota in the first six months of the year and went well over by the end of the year. In 1972, we: wrote up 180 members for a total of $888,000 which is a record for District I. We are also very proud to be the district to have written the largest policy in SPJST history. Con g ratulations to all you hard workers for a job well done.

During the month of December, we wrote 16 members for the amount of $30,000. In number one place was Brother Willie Trcalek with one member of $10,000. In second place was Sister Mollie Ewell with one member for $5,000. Third place was Brother Frank Vytopil with four members for $4,000.

During the month of January, I think we started off fairly good ni spite of the bad weather. It is always hard to get started after the holidays.

I am sure we will increase our sales as we progress in the year. In January, 1973, we wrote 28 members for the amount of $50,000. We had a tie for first place between Brother Clint Luksa and Brother Rudolph Junek who each sold four members for the amount of $13,000. Second place was Brother Joe Fritcher with four members for $4,000.

Third place was 'Sister Mollie Ewell with three members for $4,000.

VPSTN K eel. It then developed that the three attending physicians and the anesthesiologist were unable to insert the andotracheal instrument necessary for breathing during the operation. After considerable eflort and no success, it was decided to postpone the operation and try another time. The extensive probing into the tracheal area resulted in a good deal of bruising so that it was decided that I should spend a few extra days in the hospital recuperating and allowing my throat area to heal. This was done and I was released early Thursday, February 15.

I am now scheduled to be re-admitted to the hospital on Monday, February 26 and have the gall bladder operation the next day, Tuesday, There are no further medical examinations necessary. An ENT specialist will also be on hand the next time to aid in inserting the andotracheal tube. There are no other complications.

The last few days in the hospital I developed gout in the right knee cap, but this has since been cleared up, and has no relation to the gall bladder. I will keep you posted.

Until I am re-admitted, I will be in and out of the office on a limited basis and will be making a few short trips to lodges.

Royalty competition should get in touch with this office as soon as possible. We have set the date for this competition for Sunday, September 23, 1973. We would like to hear from all lodges interested in hosting this event DO later than Thursday, March 8. In this way, we can give all lodges an equal opportunity to bid to host this event. It might be added that a good PA system is required for this occasion, plus good lighting, plus a platform about 20 feet long and 3 feet wide that is to be placed in front of the main stage. We have had this at 'the last three State YADs and it has proven to be very successful.

Also, the host lodge should be prepared to serve a meal to those in attendance. It is difficult to estimate the number of people who will be attending this event, but judging from past experience, we have had anywhere from 300 to 450 attending this occasion.

This office has also hired and paid for the orchestra that has furnished music for dancing after the State Royalty, so all of these arrangements will be taken care of from this office.

The other part of State Youth Achievement Day (arts, crafts, talent, and Beseda) will again be held in a high school auditorium, the plans for which have not yet been finalized. The date for this event has been set for Sunday, September 9, 1973.

FROM THE LODGE YOUTH LEADERS LODGE NO, 35, ELK Dear Members and Readers: Our regular monthly meeting was held Sunday, February 11, with 21, members present. We discussed going skating in the near future and also having a social on a Friday night with square dancing, games, etc.

We had a beautiful Valentine cake, thanks to Terri and Julie Hand. We thank you girls and to your mother, too. Next month, the birthday cake will

After the youth club meeting adjourned, the youth club decided to clean up the ditches in front of the church, store and lodge. Thank you, Brother Charlie Pavelka, for the use of your pick-up: The clean-up went very fast and we collected two trash cans full. Thanks to all the kids who helped.

We had a very good turnout, and opened our meeting with a trip to the local bowling alley where we rolled a few "gutter balls." Then we returned to the hall and discussed our next dance, at which the Youth Club will be responsible for the kitchen. We are anticipating an exceptional evening as Johnny Mensik will be playing for our "Spring Fiesta" dance. This will be on March 10, and I hope everyone makes their plans early to attend. A delicious supper is planned with country-style klobase and all the trimmings on the menu.

[Wonder of wonders, I do believe that we will finally be able to have our week-end Youth Club sponsored Lodge Campout. Ed Kamas and Flo Mikulec, my very able assistants, estel I have not yet finalized all the plans, other than setting the date and place. It will be held at Cleburne State Park on the week-end of May 18, 19 and 20, We have reserved group camp facilities for that week-end, which include men's and women's dormitories, mess hall with furnished kitchen, and restrooms and showers. Facilities are equipped to handle 50 people co there should be room enough to handle anyone who may v. g rit to attend. to say, reservations will be Neeh first-served taken in a first-come, basis. fhis is an exceptional. opportunity our members who have not been able to be active in our Lodge to become -quainted with us, while having a .: ally wonderfull time. Dear Readers, Our meeting opened at 7 p.m. on February 7. The minutes were read, youth reports given, and "Happy Birthday" was sung.

A long discussion followed on the Cher dance, Beseda, district camp, and the bus to camp between now and March 18. We also have to make something for the district "Old-Fashion Fair."

Miss Heaths won the $2 door prize.

Then the meeting adjourned. Our next youth club meeting will be held on March 7 at the Rosenberg Civic Center in Rosenberg, starting at 7 p.m.

We had a guest speaker, our District Youth Counselor, Mr. Frank Klinkovsky and his wife, Mrs. Irma Klinkovsky. New business was opened. Steven Dulock made a motion to have a skating party. The motion was seconded and carried. Our youth leader will decide upon the date.

After the adjournment of the meeting, the youth club set out to clean cans and bottles out of our community. We had a lot of fun and collected a large amount.

The social for this month, was to go to Austin for a concert. We left at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, February 12, and we returned about 2 a.m.

Our annual fund-raising night will be held on February 23 and everyone as welcome to come. This is the only way the club can earn money, and if we plan to have socials for the future, this fund-raising night must be a success. Club members are urged to bring prizes for the games, cake walk and food for the kitchen. For more information call either Mrs. Johnie Va,nicek or Mrs. Raymond Sodek.

Our visitors were Kenneth and Thomas Vanek.

Under old business, discussion followed on the valentine cake which was supposed to be given to the rest home, and selling tickets after the meeting, for a box of valentine candy.

Under new business, we discussed what we were going to do after the next meeting. It was decided to play baseball after the meeting. Then discussion followed on the spring meeting. Our meeting was then adjourned.

Sister Elsie Brdecka showed us some craft, with refreshments following.

by President Vernell Zak. The youth club then repeated the motto and then sang the SPJST song. The secretary followed with the roll call. The treasurer then gave her report..

The president then recognized the visitors, Mrs. Elsie Brdecka, the District VI Youth Counselor, and Mrs. Henrietta Vanek, the Victoria youth leader. The secretary then read her minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved as read.

Under old business, the youth club sent a cake to the Hallettsville rest home for Valentine's Day. There was also a reminder to the youth club that pictures would be taken after the meeting. It was also brought before the club that the District VI spring meeting will be on Sunday, March 25 in Talton, Texas.

Under new businesS, camp and the district YAD were discussed. The youth leader then gave her comments and was followed with the district youth. counselor. It was decided to have baseball after the next meeting.

The youth leader then passed out candy to all members and visitors present. The meeting was adjourned.

Mrs. Brdecka then demonstrated some craft items to the youth.

IN MEMORIAM Brother Joseph Vytopil was born in Czechoslovakia on August 8, 1889 and came to the United States as a. young man in 1913. With him he brought the Czech culture and traditions.

While still in Czechoslovakia-, he became a member of Sokol at the early age of 17 and perhaps his first memorable, great event as a Sokol gymnast was attending and participating in a Slet in Prague in 1912.

Settling in Ennis, he became a member of the Ennis Sokol in 1922. Being a vigorous and strong believer of Sokol and its ideals, he for many years, was an instructive educator and organizer of his unit and served the same purpose for the Southern District for many years. In this way he spread the name of Sokol far and wide. By his Sokol teaching and instructing, he secured new members and gave the rest of the members even more interest and reason for being- a Sokol. His educational talks to the young gymnasts undoubtedly impressed and guided them to becomer the strongest members of their units today. He held the office of vice president Of his unit for several years and president for many years.

Not only was he a hard worker for Sokol, but he took many interests and worked equally hard in other lodges as the SPJST and RVOS, in which he had offices and served as delegates to their conventions.

Brother Vytopil directed countless Czech stage plays which were so popular in the -past years. His ability of portraying various characters added interest, enrichment and success in a lot of the plays. He was also widely known for his column in the popular Czech paper Cachoslovak. The column appeared weekly and consisted of local news, timely articles of happenings in the world, various opinions — serious and sometimes humerous incidents of life and past life in the old country. At one time when he gave up the column

Wednesday, February 21, 1973 for a few months due to- illness, many people felt something was missing in the paper — so popular and widely read was his column. In this column, he took the opportunity and constantly wrote and promoted Sokol and its ideals which served as guidance to all Sokol members and informed the public of its activities. He owned a shoe shop in Ennis. Not only was this shop a means of making a living but also a gathering place for old-timers who stopped by for a chat.

Even though living in this country for many years, his thoughts and heart still remembered his homeland, Cechoslovakia and some of his family still live there.

A few mottos and favorites sayings of Brother Vytopil were: "Live and let live," "Always jump over -- never crawl under," "American Sokol youth can be led, but not pushed."

Brother Joseph Vytopil's record de-serves recognition and not only should the Ennis unit, but the whole Sokol organization be proud and honored to have had such a member. May his leadership and hard work be an inspiration to all Sokols and Czech people alike.

A salute to you; — Brother Vytopil — to a great Czech and a true Sokol.

Ennis Sokol Unit Members --SPJSTEXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 9•, Fort Worth, in behalf of the entire membership wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, WILLIAM R. CRIBBS, who- passed away Tuesday, February 13, 1973 at Harris Hospital.

Funeral services were held February 15, at 2 p.m., from the First Baptist Church at Elbert, Texas, with Rev. A. S. Haney, Jr., and Rev. Harold Henderson officiating. Burial was in the Elbert Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Lila Louise of Fort Worth; son, Donald R. Azle; daughter, Mrs. Noretta Johnson; brother, Floyd Cribbs, both of Elbert, Texas; sisters, Mrs. Eunice Dairymaple, Arlington, Mrs. Gene Griffin, Lancaster; and four grandchildren.

'Tupy a Dallas; seven daughters, Mrs. Bob Zvolanek, Mrs. Frank Sebestik, Mrs. Tom Roberts, all of Dallas, Mrs. William Baker of California, Miss Georgia Tupy of Montebello, Calif., Mrs. C. E. Wisniewsky of Indiana, and Mrs. Milan Dujka of Ross; eleven grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Keever Chapel February 10 at 2 p.m. with interment in Crisp Cemetery.

ACCENT ON HEALTH THE FAMILY LAWYER Privacy in Public Places

Fire engines roar up to a house across the street, and you hurry over to watch the excitement. Of a newspaper photographer snaps your picture and you wind up on the front page of a local newspaper, has your "right of' privacy" been violated?

The law's answer is no. Even though the right of privacy has expanded in recent years, it does not override the freedom of the press to report legitimate news. As a spectator at a public event, you were part of the news. All the photographer did was to record what anyone who was there could have seen anyhow.

Some people are born newsworthy, some achieve newsworthiness, and Some have newsworthiness thrust upon them. But, one and all, they are subject to the constitutional right of the press to report what goes on in the community.

Even if a person specifically forbids publicity, he does not thereby become immune.

In one case, the irate father in a custody fight ordered reporters to "lay off" the story. But the story appeared anyhow -- with pictures. The man claimed invasion of his privacy, but a court decided that he had no legal kick coming.

"There are times," said the court, "when one, willingly or not, becomes an actor in an occurrance of public interest. When this takes place, he emerges from his seclusion, and it is not an invasion of privacy to publish his photograph with an account of such occurrance."

On the other hand, and item of information does not automatically become newsworthy just because a newspaper sees fit to print it. For example: A newspaper published a notice by a hardware dealer, complaining about a certain customer's unpaid bill. This time, when the customer sued the newspaper for invasion of his privacy,

On second thought, you don't have to be a gambler to mull it over.

Accept this as a fact: if you're an American, chances are greater than 50 per cent that you will die of a circulatory disease — a disease of the hear or blood vessels.

There are statistics to back this up.

Diseases of the heart and blood vessels kill more Americans and more `Texans each year than accidents and other diseases combined, say state health officials.

Heading the 10 leading killers in Texas in 1970 and 1971 was heart disease, almost doubling the second biggest killer — cancer. Cerebrovascular disease was third and arteriosclerosis ninth, according to the State Health Department's Bureau of Vital Statistics.

The cardiovascular disease (diseases of the heart and circulation) afflicting more than 27 million children and adults and kill more than one million Americans annually.

Some diseases primarily affect the blood vessels, others only the heart itself. Among the major diseases are those which cause the blood vessels to corrode and deteriorate, with resultant damage to the heart, brain, kidneys or other parts of the body.

The major ailments which injure the cardiovascular system are atherosclerosis, hypertension, and rheumatic heart disease. They may produce congestive heart failure, heart attack and Stroke. Also of major concern are congenital defects of the heart and great vessels which are discovered primarily in infants and children.

Great advances are being made in the treatment of those with cardiovasular problems, yet the deaths continue.

Circulatory diseases, with autopsy studies showing increased disease of the coronary arteries in young men, is holding down the life expectancy of men in the United States. Autopsy stu-

Although heart attacks are less common in men under 30 years of age, they become more of a hazard as a man grows older — reaching a peak for those between 50 and 60.

The artery-clogging process begins early in life, but it isn't until it suddenly blocks the supply of blood to an area of the heart muscle that a heart attack occurs. Such an occlusion can occur at any time in a diseased artery.

Statistics show that men have more heart attacks than women in the same age group — up to 13 times more in the 30 to 45-year age group — but only twice as many in the age span between 45 and 62. After 65 the rate is about the same between Caucasian men and women.

The heart disease picture is a grim one, but there are a number of practical things which can be done to thwart heart attacks, prevent heart disease and prevent strokes.

Primarily, these preventive measures are related to physical activity, proper diet and proper living habits.

Unfortunately for those in the dangerous, years, some of the arterial damage from built-up and hardened fatty deposits can't be reversed. But, through exercise, diet and the change in life style — such as quitting smoking — your chances of having a heart attack can be improved a bit.

It's a bit early to tell if the second half of the split dove season is a success but a dozen Frio County bird hunters have cause to wonder about future dove seasons.

On the final day of the statewide Jan. 6-21 season, Parks and Wildlife Department game warden Billy Hoyle of Pearsall apprehended 12 dove hunters with 303 doves, some 183 birds over the legal limit.

The 11 adult hunters were fined a total of $1,100 plus court costs.

Also on January 21, wardens Harold Oates of Athens and Ed Baker of Palestine acted on ai call for their district supervisor pertaining to night hunting for deer in Leon County.

Baker and Oates found three mEn in possession of 3 illegally killed deer.

The trio was fined a total of $1,800.

There's a longstanding argument between stockmen and conservationists as to what effect coyotes have on livestock.

What effect do the predators have on the Trans-Pecos region antelope herd?

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologists under project leader Tom Hailey of Marfa conducted a yearlong study to determine the causes of and degree of mortality of the TransPecos antelope herd.

During the late fall and early winter of 1971 and 1972, 214,000 acres north of Valentine, Texas, were treated with compound 1080 in horsemeat.

This project was carried out by personnel of the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife in cooperation with local landowners.

It had been noted for the past several years during annual antelope census that fawn production in the particular area has been below other parts of the Trans-Pecos.

After the Valentine area was treated with compound 1080 in 1971, the fawn crcp swelled to almost 25 percent more than the rest of antelope country.

The 1971-72 winter was a mild one and, all other factors taken into consideration, the control of coyotes in the treated area is the primary reason for the increase in fawn production and survival.

CZECHS LIVE WITH HARD WORK, AND INDEPENDENCE

By Anne Dodson Corpus Christi's population includes descendants of a variety of European immigrantS. As the ties with the old country are weakened by each generation, what aspects of language and culture remain? This is the first in a series of articles which will explore the life-styles of some of the larger, identifiable groups.

Without work there are no kolache.

This is an old Czechoslovakian saying the typifies even today the attitude of Czech-Americans toward hard work and self-reliance.

17 Interviews with more than 30 local Czechs of all ages produced this consensus about cultural attitudes they have retained.

Asked to describe So. Texas Czechs, hard-working was usually the first adjective they chose. Independence and self-reliance were stressed.

"I think that Czechs generally don't want something for nothing; they want to stand on their own two feet," said Mrs. Mary Sherek, who grew up in Robstown.

"Czech people don't want handouts", said Fred F. Brandesky, whose father, an immigrant, came here from Bryan in 1906. "They've always worked for a living and they used to help each other a lot but now it's different."

This emphasis on hard work was not Solely the prodUct of a back-breaking struggle to clear and farm the brushcovered land.

"Long after it was necessary, my grandparents continued to de really hard work on the farm," said one young Czech.

The Rev. Richard Shirley, whose maternal grandparents, Angeline Brandesky and John Janosek were married here in 1908, considers thrift as a Czech characteristic.

"The older generation has always seemed to me to appreciate things more and they never wasted anything", he said. "I think this may have stemmed in part from the hard time many families had in making a go of farming here."

This is balanced by an open-handed hospitality which has continued as a tradition.

"Czechs will always serve plenty to eat and drink at get-togethers,7 said Adolph Sassin, who moved to Chapman Ranch from Moravia, Texas, in 1939.

And it will probably be home-cooked.

"Usually Czechs are still willing to take the time to serve a good meal and not take the easy way out with Kentucky-fried chicken," said Herman Bohuslav, who grew up in Moulton.

The whole family is involved in Czech part*, anothdr continuing tradition.

"There is a deep appreciation of family life," Shirley said. "It may have been emphasized by rural environment in which Czechs lived but families did things together. A party included everyone."

Mrs. Herman Bohuslav, a native of Moulton, recalls a story her aunts told about their father.

"When I was small I remember hearing them say that if grandfather thought that too many Sundays had gone by without the family getting together, he'd throw a barbecue," she said.

The "family" was then and is still interpreted in its broadest sense. In the past 65 years, there has been a great deal of intermarriage among the original Czech settlers here.

"We always say that if you talk long enough about who you are related to, you'll turn out to be each other's kinfolks," said Mrs. Sherek.

Mrs. Al Kuccra, the former Mary Polasek, and Mrs. E. J. Nctek, the former Joy Strmiska, believe that friendliness and a happy outlook arc characteristics of Czechs.

Cleanliness and order are also emphasized in Czech homes.

"You always have to have everything just as clean and neat as possible," one man said.

Two young men filed a minority report. For them, the older generation shows rigidity in thinking and stubbornness.

"I oug ht to know; I'm pretty stubborn myself," one added.

Other young p eople said that they saw no alttitudes or charactori)stics distinguishing Czechs from other Americans.

What else has been retained by the descendants of farming families who came here more than 60 years ago?

Have sports, foods, music, customs and games survived?

There are love songs which date to the Czech immigration in the last century and ballads.

"It used to be that you could walk into any Czech home and find an accordion or a guitar," said Mrs. Steve Tepera.

Some families formed orchestras and those no ✓ involve three generations.

The Leo Majek orchestra in Corpus Christi and the Pavelka Brothers of Robstown are typical of this continuin, tradition.

Earlier, the failure of the 1848 revolution in Austro•Hungaria and the resulting repression caused the first wave.

"One of my brothers back in Moravia died in the Austrian Army on the Russian front during the 1st World War," he said.

Middle-aged Czechs recall how the older generation marked the doors of their homes with crosses at Easter time.

Mrs. David Tajchman told of her grandfather's reminders about fasting on Christmas Eve. (Until recently, the day was one of fast and abstinence for Catholics.)

"He'd say that if we ate too much on Christmas Eve, instead of presents under the tree, we'd see a pig smoking a pipe," she said, For the older Czech generation, taroky is still a popular game for men.

Some make a New Year's Eve tradition of playing it.

One young Czech described it as a game "similar to spades", but a middle-aged Czech said he had despaired of learning it.

"It all depends on the group you play it with," he said. "They use different names for the same move. I was told by a visitor from Czechoslovakia that this is true of taroky in the old country too. Forest people can't play taroky with the low-land people and so on."

MILITARY DROVE CZECHS

Wednesday, February 21, 1973 lively 95, left Czechoslovakia with six brothers who were approaching the draft- age. They had heard much about America from an uncle who had settled in Texas. Ironically, one of the brothers, who was working on the Kostoryz Ranch, was later drafted into the American Army in World War I and died fighting in France.

According to Texas Czech historians, many of the Czech immigrants came from villages and regions where soil was thin and depleted. Both the middle-class arid farmers were represented.

The majority of those coaling to Texas settled on farms in the black land and upper coastal areas north and south from Denton to Corpus Christi.

Small towns and farming communities in this area bare such Czech names as Holub, Praha, Moravia and Kovar.

Most of the local Czechs came from Bohemia and !Moravia, with fewer numbers coining from the third large province, Slovakia.

More than 70 percent were Catholics: the Church of the Brethren led the list of Protestant denominations.

Farming attracted the vast majority of the newcomers. However, some like John Stasa operated gins or worked as machinists and carpenters. John Stasa also farmed for some time in the vicinity of Buckholts before operating a cotton gin. Frank C. Sacky, who grew up in Elk, Texas, worked in a grocery store when he came here in 1931 and later owned one.

"Just about all the first generation were farmers," said one Czech. "Then we left the farms for the cities but we had no professions or much training. Now our children are going into the professions."

Young Czechs are teachers, dentists, career servicemen, lawyers, construction workers and work as business men in many different fields.

"The Czechs came here poor and now their children are middle-class people," said Fred F. Brandesky, describing the local success story.
