FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK NOTICE Dear Members and Correspondents: We keep receiving letters postmarked on a Friday and Saturday and even on Sunday, announcing meetings for the following Sunday, etc. For instance, letters postmarked January 6, 7 and 8, announcing meetings for January 14. These arrived Monday morning and your editor has to hold up the operations at the print shop to get these letters into the Vestnik. It is either try to print them or throw them away. Your editor feels that all correspondents should know in advance when their meeting is to be held and then send the letter in time EFFECTIVE IMMEDIAYFELY, LETTERS WILL NOT BE PRINTED UNLESS THEY HAVE ARRIVED BY SATURDAY NOON. Most of the lodges throughout the state held their election of officers and committees to serve in the new year To all elected officers and committees on the local lodge level, for the lodge to fulfill its purpose, each must take Personal pride to help guide his or her lodge during the year. Your obligation is a step toward the growth of your lodge and the Society as a whole.

This requires ability, spirit of friendliness and a desire to do their best in promoting the work of your lodge and helping the Society to become better known in the community.

Most of the lodges have selected a reporter or correspondent who will keep the members of your lodge and community informed of all important events. All articles and clippings should be sent to the editor of the SPJST Vestnik. The deadline for all correspondence is Friday noon, and dead-

line for pictures (black and white only, please) is Thursday noon. Preferably sooner. In most cases we receive pictures accompanying the article or writeup for publication which cannot be processed overnight. It takes additional time for processing which we do not do here at the printshop. Kindly mail your pictUres for publication early in the week so there will not be any delay in publication. Your cooperation and consideration will be greatly appreciated.

Much thought should be given to the promotion, growth, and activities of the youth clubs in your community.

Any lodge looking for its future, will give a careful consideration to organizing a club Of its own. The members of the juvenile department are our future officers and leaders. All efforts should be extended to attract their interest.

The SPJST Society has focused its attention on its 76th year, with all the zeal and hope of achieving an all-time high in membership. To succeed, there must be teamwork and communication with a FRATERNAL feeling.

Where there is teamwork and sincere communication, there will be greater success. Remember that much more can be accomplished in any endeavor with a TRUE' and sincere display of fraternal spirit. LET US ALL MAKE 1973 A FRATERNAL YEAR!

Wednesday, January 10, 1973 What does enthusiasm grow out of?

It grows out of confidence . and knowledge that you have some ability in some field. There is power in enthusiasm. It m4y be said to be contagious. Even arguments sometimes disappear without utterance before the pervading influence of enthusiasm. Enthusiasm gives a person a slight mental advantage and contributes to a fuller life. It overrides seemingly impossible obstacles and sets others afire by your attitude and confidence. It can resurrect those who feel weak and discouraged. Enthusiasm for those who are persistent can become the bed rock of faith, the cornerstone of self-confidence, the pay dirt of initiative.

Contentment is made up of many things; small things that seen too insignificant to be of great worth. We often pass them by and wonder why life is dull and colorless. There is joy to be found in things like the smell of a baby's head after his bath; the feel of his small body cuddled in your arms as his eyelids slowly cover big sleepy eyes. There is a smell of contentment in the new mown hay where the farm boy rests after a well-done day's work.

And there is the smell of new baked bread and apple pie. Contentment is smells, sight and all the small things that make life sweet. Like the rose over the wall, the cat curled up in the sun with her kittens by her side Like the holding of hands of the very old.

Those who have faced life bravely and now look into the setting sun unafraid. Contentment is found in the tiny cottage where the young are starting life's journey. Best of all it is found in a person's heart. The homemade contentment is the kind that lives after age robs youth of years. It can be found in the dimmed eyes of those who met life bravely. Contentment of life.

It is the acceptance of death. Money cannot buy it. Only love can make it.

It is not for sale. It grows sweeter as the years go by. It is• wonderful, great and needed by ALL people. Contentment makes life worth living.

Nevvsbriefs J. R. Bo rtek, 85, died December 31, 1912 in Fort Worth. Funeral services were held from All Saints Catholic Church in Fort Worth on January 2, 1973 with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Fort Worth. Brother Bartok was a longtime member of the SPJST and

Wednesday, January 16, 1973 Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth. He attended several SPJST conventions and in his earlier years was a very good organizer for the SPJST. Dist. III Director Brother Sid Pokladnik represented the SPJST and spoke briefly at the graveside services.

Mrs. Willie Mae (Frank) Marek, 40, of Route 2, West, died in the West Community Hospital December 31, 1972.

Funeral services were held from St. Mary's Church of the Assumption in West on January 2, 1973, with burial in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery near West. Sister Marek, her husband, and two small sons were all members of Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

Mrs. Aloisie Boll, 94, of Buckholts, died Saturday, December 30, in a Cameron nursing home after a long illness.

Services were held Monday, January 1, from St. Monica Catholic Church in Cameron, with burial in the Corinth Cemetery near Buckholts. Sister Boif was a, member of SPJST Lodge No. 15, Buckholts.

Brother John Becan, passed away at 5 a.m. Friday, January 5, 1973 in Northwest Hospitall in Fort Worth.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 1973 from All Saints Catholic Church. Brother Becan was a member of Lodge NO. 154.

Features STANLEY KACIR RETURNS TO PRIVATE LAW PRACTICE

By Tom Beard Temple Telegram Regional Editor Belton — Stanley Kacir, district attorney in Bell County during a decade of unprecedented growth in the criminal caseload, is returning to private life.

Kacir, 45, served his last day Friday, Dec. 29, as district attorney of the 27th Judicial District, which includes Bell, Lampasas and Mills counties. Beginning Tuesday, he'll be in private practice in the family law firm of Kacir, Lesikar, Kacir and Everton of Temple.

But he isn't saying he won't return to politics and public life. "They say if you ever get into politics it gets into your blood," he said. "I'm keeping my options open." Kacir, district attorney since 1960, was an unsuccessful candidate for 146th District Judge in the May Democratic primary.

BROTHER STANLEY KAGilt When he first became district attorney, the staff consisted of Kacir and one secretary. His office handled about 250 felony complaints that year and about 175 indictments were returned by grand juries.

In 1972, his office handled about 2,000 complaints and got about 1,000 indictments, he said. The staff consisted of Kacir, an investigator, four assistant district attorneys, four secretaries and a part-time briefing clerk.

Since the 27th Judicial District was formed in 1850, Kacir said 20,284 criminal cases have b:en filed. More than 6,000 of those cases were filed while he was district attorney, he said.

What brought about the upsurge in the workload?

Kacir pinpointed three things: —In the' early 1960s, Fort Hood grew from a post housing part of a division to one housing two full divisions and III Corps.

—A tremendous increase in narcotics violations.

—Several U. S. Supreme Court decisions "which created a greater burden on law enforcen-ient agencies and us in getting convictions.' These decisions dealt with search and seizure of suspects and confessions.

"We used to present just confessions, no witnesses, in half the cases we brought to the grand jury," he said.

"Now confessions are almost nil. By the time you get through giving them all the warnings, they won't say anything even if they're guilty. But it has

created a more efficient operation."

He recalled that one time a grand jury finished returning indictments at 3 p.m. By 6 p.m. that same day, 22 pleas of guilty had been made by persons indicted.

"You used to could handle a plea of guilty with one piece of paper," he said. "Now it takes 13."

All types of crime increased during his tenure, especially narcotics violations. Until the mid-60s, the county had perhaps two or three narcotics violations per year, he said. His office handled about 600 felony narcotics cases in 1972, Kacir • said.

Adding to the. burden, he said, was that virtually every case tried and convicted wait to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. "Preparing for these appeals is a big job," he said, "but we've had good success in getting the convictions affirmed."

Regardless of political pressure, I always did what I thought was right," Kacir said. "And I never lost a night's sleep over what I did."

Kacir said his staff deserves credit for having his department in good shape at the end of his tenure. "I feel that somehow I've been extremely fortunate in b e i.n g able to obtain assistants, secretaries and investigators of tep He also expressed appreciation for the support he has received from law enforcement agencies. "Without their help, this would have been an impossible job." he said.

A native of Temple, Kacir entered private practice in Temple in 1951. He was Temple city judge, a part-time position, from 1953 to 1956 and was county attorney from 1957 until taking over as DA. Brother Kacir and his family are all members of SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple. He is also a past president of that lodge, and has attended several SPJST conventions. TEMPLE JUNIOR COLLEGE OFFERS THREE LEVELS OF CZECH LANGUAGE COURSES Temple Junior College will expand its Czech language program to three courses in the coming spring semester which begins January 15.

Third semester students will take Czech 213: Reading and Composition

4 from 7 to 10 on Monday evenings.

Second semester students will take Czech 123: Intermediate Czech from 7 to 10 on Thursday evenings.

Those who may be starting a Czech language course for the first time and have no previous background in language will take Czech 113: Beginning Czech from 7 to 10 on Monday evenings.

Persons with some background in the Czech language may enter at the level most appropriate for them. Persons with a good reading knowledge of the language are encouraged to enter the Reading and Composition course.

Persons with some vocabulary and .speaking background may wish to enter at the Intermediate Czech level.

Persons interested in taking any of the three Czech language courses should see or call The Registrar (8'17773-2730), Temole Junior College, Temple, Texas 71;;;01, by January 12, 1973.

Call early, if possible, to indicate your interest and thereby assure that there will be enough students for each of the classes to materialize.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Happy New Year!! And what a jolly New Year's Eve dance it was. The Chandelier Ballroom at Lodge 88 was filled to the brim with dancing wellwishers, while the Hi-Toppers Orchestra furnished some swell music.

A wonderful surprise it was to wake up this New Year's morning and find that my head was not only still on my shoulders, but that I was actually feeling fine. Any hangovers, anybody?

Yes, 1972 is now but a memory. To some, it was good, while to others, perhaps not so good, but among some of the most recent happy memories, no doubt was the exchanging of good wishes at our great New Year's Eve dance. Wouldn't we have a humdinger of a Society, if all the sisters and brothers would be as close to each other throughout the whole year?

In reviewing the thoughts of 1972, I wish to compliment our president, Sister Tillie Helmcamp, and all the officers, committee members and even friends for doing their part well in supporting our lodge and the SPJST in the past years. And may the officers for 1973 be blessed with a lot of determination, cooperation and harmony to enable them to make Lodge 38 even a greater and nicer place for us and our youngsters.

Coming events at Lodge 88 — Saturday, January 13, we have a big dance to the good music of The Knights of Dixie from Schulenburg. On Saturday, January 20, The Vrazels from Buckholts, will play for our Polka Special dance. Then on Saturday, January 27, let's say we will have sort of a semiformal dance. Some of you ladies will enjoy wearing your long holiday gowns, but all of you other girls who have at least something to put on, come too!

You know the fashions don't call for too much now-a-days.

Other activities: Wednesday, Januray 10, the Birthday Club sisters are holding their short meeting and more games, luncheon and drawing of prizes.

Every Thursday is a big social night with home-cooked meals served from 5:30 p.m. and games start at 8 p.m.

Our annual meeting will be held on Sunday, January 14th, starting at 10 a.m. All present at the morning session will be served dinner free. After 1:30 p.m., the evening session will get underway. Officers for 1973 will be elected so be sure to come and voice your choice.

The Sunnyland Cowboys' countrywestern dance was a very pleasant evening for those who braved going out before New Year's Eve. And, of course, the New Year's Eve dance was a complete sellout, and very pleasant for those not afraid of germs.

Here and there — Mr. and Mrs. Wayne W. McCuan II are the proud parents of a big baby boy, 8 lbs., 15 ozs. He was named Wayne W. McCuan III, and the proud spoiling grandparents are Ann and Gilbert Polniek, all of Lodge 88. Brother Tommy Jecmenek was surprised by some members of his family and friends, with a birthday party. A nice meal was enjoyed by all, and token presents went to Tommy, along with wishes for many more happy birthdays. Tommy was so touched, that he is already making arrangements for his next year celebration. He just doesn't believe in letting grass grow under his feet.

Cora, Margie and David Darilek and cousin John Hoffman spent the Christmas holidays with their sister and cousin, Rose Darilek Rohfling in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were thrilled with their first plane ride, as well as the first and record snowfall. In turn, Rose was very glad to see them, because she and her husband, Dr. Jeff Rohfling, moved to Salt Lake just re-

6 cently, and this was Rose's first Christmas away from home. Cora, Margie, David and Rose are the children of Celestine and Rudy Darilek and John is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Quentin Hoffman.

There was, no doubt, a lot of partying and visiting throughout the holidays. The Frank, Jerry, George and Albert Sebeks; the Louis Roznovskys and Johnny Mroskov families having Christmas fun at their mother's little farm home. The Theo, Charles and Steve Krolczyks, the Bob Mrazs, Clayton Bradfords, James McCormicas, Albert McConns, David Clevelands, Mrs. Dorothy Johnson and her dauahters, Cecelia Krolezyk and the Bobby Bryants, spent one holiday evening at our (the Horelicas') house. It was indeed a wonderful evening of family fun. By the way, the Frank Sebeks have moved from their old home into their new one, which they have built on their sprawling farm. Frank has already learned that you don't go through the front door with. boots on; and Sophie, the little dog has learned that the rugs are not grass. Congratulations!

Plans and discussions are now going on as to how we are going to get 'em ext season.Some excuses why we didn't get them are: they were there in the summer, but were gone when the season opened; the wolves moved in and chased them off; too many squirrel hunters shooting on the lease; I dozed off; my sights were off; too many bushes; I winged him but couldn't find him; I just popped a can of beer and heard him snort and take off. These are only a few excuses. My excuse is the most sincere: I was invited by two different friends to go hunting with them. but I just didn't have time and sense enough to go.

'They got their deer. I hope they give me the same chance next season.

Thanks. In fact, my buddy and I hardly got to do any duck hunting this year, but don't despair hunters, the duck, goose, quail, and experimental dove seasons are still on. But better check with the Wildlife Dept. for full data on the dates, etc.

LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members: The weather in December spoiled the meeting of Lodge No. 92. It was raining, sleeting and freezing, and very few members were courageous enough to go out, so the election of officers for 1973, had to be postponed. Next meeting will be held Sunday, January 14, at 2 p.m. in our lodge hall, be sure you all come out and elect the officers who will serve best for our lodge.

After the meeting, lunch will be served and we ask our good sisters to please bring some pastry; the rest will be furnished by the lodge.

Several of our members were reported sick last month, either at home or in the hospital. Brother Anton and Sister Frances Tirk, were sick at home and under a doctor's care. Sisters Ann Zurovetz, Julie Whatley, Gardinia Reed, Willie Mae Becan, Eva Dockery, all were in the hospital. We wish all of them a speedy and complete recovery.

The Christmas program, prepared

by Youth Leader Billie J. Krivanek and her helper Alene Kercho, was nicely done. The children had lots of fun and ,Santa gave all present sacks of fruit, candy and nuts, and our host served everyone punch, coffee, and cookies.

Sorry, I don't have the names of the children on the program, but they all were good. More power to them.

Our lodge lost a longtime and faithful member the last day of the year; Brother Joe R. Bartek, who on New Year's Day would have been 85 years old. He died Sunday morning and was buried Thursday morning from All Saints Catholic Church in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Bosary was recited Monday night in Shannon's Chapel, led by Father Robert Avarado, who also officiated at the funeral mass and services at the cemetery. Brother Bartek is survived by his wife, Bena (Stastny) Bartek.

Brother Bartek was president of Lodge 92 for many years and was a delegate to conventions many times, too. In 1948, the SPJST State Convention was held in Fort Worth. Brother Bartek did many good deeds for our lodge and he will be remembered for many years to come. Our deepest sympathy goes to his loving wife and to Brother Bartek: Eternal rest give to him 0 Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him.

LADIES' CIRCLE', LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members: The holidays are over and it is time to get back to work.

The first meeting of the Ladies' Circle will be held on Thursday, January 11, at 10:30 a.m. at National Hall. I hope everyone got over the flu bug, which was bugging so many of our members, including us, and the weather will be favorable for our first meeting. We will have hostesses. Sorry to say, I forgot who they are.

We had a nice meeting in December and had two visitors, Mrs. Mary Pavey (and I believe she joined our club) and Mrs. Mary Short, from Colorado. Mrs. Short is the former Miss Mary Zacek, from Fort Worth. Mrs. Short has several brothers and one sister living here, Mrs. Frances Dalton, and other relatives living here. When she comes to visit them she always attends our meeting. We were all glad to see her.

We had a nice letter from Mrs. Mary Bylsma, our former preisident who moved last year to San Antonio, and a letter from Mr. Petrik from Czechoslovakia. They visited relatives here about four years ago, and Mrs. Petrik passed away since then; it 's always nice to hear from them.

Thank-you cards were read from Sister Christine Zich and Eva, Dockery.

They both were in the hospital, and doing nicely at home now. We voted to send gifts to the shut-in members: Sisters Mary Juran, who is still in the rest home, and Anna Korteff also in the rest home, and Anna Kubala, who

Birthdays in November were celebrated by Mrs. Agnes Wruble and Lillie McMillen; in December, by Elizabeth Gregory, Louise Cramer and Marie Tesar. We sang them "Happy Birthday" and wished them many more.

There was election of officers and these were elected: Lillie McMillen — president; Millie Wruble. — vice president; Dona Hubenak — treasurer; and Billie Spindor — temporary secretary.

I do not know who the reporters will be because I am giving up the reporting.

After the meeting, we enjoyed a delicious dinner and then the gifts.

Sister Anna Langer even treated us with her delicious homemade wine.

LODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH Dear Brothers and Sisters: Here it is the first week of 1973 gone by. Where does the time •go?

We are sorry to report that Brother John Becan was rushed to the hospital Sunday, December 31st. We went by to see him yesterday (the 3rd) and he was pretty sick, but was resting a little better, so we all pray he will get better each day. He is in the Northwest Hospital, 2100 Highway 183 NW, Zip 76106 Room 122.

We are happy to report that George Halford and Marcus Kret have been released from the hospital and are doing better.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Sister Bennie Bartek of Lodge 92 on the loss of her husband, Brother Joe Bartek.

The Friendship Club met yesterday and the sun came out shining big and bright after a big rain the night before. Twenty-four members attended, 11 men and several visitors, including Nancy Krivanek.

After the meeting, "Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Ann Langer, Verna White and Anna Vaenesian, followed by the blessing and then a delicious lunch which Sister Mary Tesar's soup and all the trimmings. Games were played and enjoyed by ail.

Sister Tesar said they went by to see Sister and Brother Anton Tirk and he is still recuperating after his bout with pneumonia, and he hopes they can join us soon. Also, Sister Anna

The second quarterly reports are in, and I am ha ppy about the increase in attendance and the number of youth clubs reporting. Last quarter was a decline in members and money, so maybe the holiday activities have helped. Let's keep up the good work. This takes the cooperation of everyone, and it shows what a little help will do.

This report is an increase of $16.75 over last quarter with two more clubs eligible for checks and only three clubs not reporting. I wish these youth leaders would let me know if there is anything I can help them with to help get their reports in. This is important toward the camp allocation for your district, even though you are not eligible for a reimbursement check at this time.

Dear Members: I hope everyone had a good Christmas, I know I did. We had so many activities and parties. I was very proud of each one of you in the lodge Christ-

mas program. Thanks again to Wanda Kennedy, Helen Hegwood and all their helpers. Also, thanks to the youth club for my Christmas gift of a beautiful handbag and to each of you who gave me an extra gift - a big THANK YOU, too.

Our youth club meeting was held Sunday , January 7 at 3 p.m. Those who checked out paper at the last meeting, were asked to bring their money to the January meeting. It is almost rodeo time and during our meeting we discussed which of the stars we would like to go see.

Dear Members: The monthly meeting of our youth club was held on December 1, 1972.

The meeting was called to order by President Becky Havran.

The meeting was well attended. We also drew names for Christmas.

Door prizes were won by Alice Pa yBeek, Steven Temple, Dennis Veselka, and Adolph Pavlicek. We have a new member in our club: and he is Steven Temple.

On October 29th we took the youth to the Prison Rodeo in Huntsville. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, inspite of the light rain. Then November 10th we went to see the Shrine Circus here in Houston. Everyone who went had a good time.

We had our annual turkey dinner in November; it was also well attended. I want to thank all who helped in the kitchen, donated cakes and pies, and also all who baked the turkeys. They were Alice Jochen, Adele, Stein, Rita Hermis, Henrietta Veselka, Erline Janik, Annie Pavlicek and Pat Tumis.

On December 16th we had our Christmas play. I want to thank all the youth for putting on this program, all by themselves. Also thanks for decorating the hall so very nicely. You all did a wonderful job. After the play, Santa Claus gave out all the gifts and goodies to the children, then he wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year before he left.

At the Christmas party, Brother Jerry Kutac handed me $100 that he donated to the youth club. I know the youth will appreciate it very much.

For the entire youth club and myself, I want to thank Brother Jerry very much for this very generous gift.

Wednesday, January 10, 1973 Before I end this letter, I would like to say that on December 4th I went to Florida with my son John to see Apollo 17 go up. It was really something to see.

Dear Members and Readers, The month of December was quite a busy one for our youth club. After the December meeting, members decorated plastic cups with bows and greetings. Later, these cups were filled with candy and distributed by the juniors to each patient at a rest home while caroling up and down the halls.

The annual Christmas party that our mother lodge had was very nice in spite of all the ice that cov P red the ground by late afternoon. The meal consisting of turke y, dressing and ham with all the trimmings was delicious.

A event that everyone is always anxious about is the outstanding service award that is presented each year. This year's award went to Brother Lion and Sister Vallie Zavodny. They are most deserving of this because they have really worked hard at our lodge, in fact the whole family has always put their shoulders to the wheel any time anything needed to be done. We're proud and happy for you, Leon and Vallie! Leon will be taking over as president of our lodge for 1973 and we know he will make a good one. Let's all back him up with our support.

Our youth members had gathered quite a large amount of staple groceries, which were taken to a family.

We hope this brought a bit of cheer into their Christmas holidays.

On Thursday night, December 21, the teens had a party at the home of Mrs. Dorothy Novosad. We certainly do thank her for hosting this party; she had a lot of goodies to eat and it was all enjoyed by everyone who come.

A big THANK YOU to the youth club from Sister Sandy, Vallie and myself, for the lovely Christmas gifts. We really do appreciate this thoughtfulness on your part.

Dear Readers, Our last meeting was held Sunday, December 10th. It was a short meeting because we had a Christmas program.

We made our plans for January and decided that we would finish our foiling, and make our plans for the rest of the year.

Affter the meeting, we held our Christmas program with songs and poems. The youth club gave our youth leader a gift, and her assistant received a corsage . After the program, Santa came and everyone had a good time.

On December 22nd some of the youth club went to the nursing home to sing Christmas carols. We also gave the patients a big basket of fruit. They all enjoyed our company and singing.

Youth Leader Mrs. Drastata gave us a party. Afterward, we made wall hangings, to take to Care Inn and the hospital in Ganado. We then went there.

We took cookies and sang Christmas songs in Care Inn. We also went to the hospital in Ganado and sang Christmas carols there.

On February 24th, our lodge is planning to have a cake walk to raise money for the youth; the band that will provide the music will be! Leo Majek.

The youth club is planning to walk 20 miles for the March of Dimes. This will be a great donation.

As you know our lodge will host the District III spring meeting and the youth often have a program, so this is being worked out. We also discussed our Easter meeting and campouts, but this is so far away that they will be discussed later, in detail.

The Pavelkas celebrated their golden Church of Granger, also a member of Lodge Komensky No. 20. SPJST, since wedding anniversary on October 31, 1972. Brother Pavelka was a faithful June 3rd, 1052.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. menibcr of Lodge 35, Elk for many Frank Machacek of Granger and Mrs. years. He was a good husband and faChristine Smejkal of Richmond; two ther. He will be greatly missed by all brothers, Frank Nemec of Granger and who knew him.

He was educated in the Wesley schools.

On September 16, 1909, he married Miss Frances Pomykal in Brenham. She preceded him in death on July 24, 1571.

A retired farmer, Brother Pomykal was a member of Wesley Brethren Church; a member of the Wesley Men's Brotherhood, and a member of the ,SPJST Lodge Veseli No. 14.

Dr. Skrivanek received a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters degree from the University of Texas. He received his Ph. D at St. Charles University in Prague, Czechoslovakia.

Editor). , LIFE AS LOVED BY OUR. UNIQUE CZECH TEXANS Every Saturday night, eastern Bell County bathes itself in a happiness unique to the area.

The lights go up in such places as Seaton Star Hall, Flag Hall, and Sefcik Hall. Inside the spacious buildings the country-western bands give out with the waltz, the polka and contemporary sounds.

There's dancing, there's food, there's fellowship — an evening of innocent merriment which bears the definite imprint of Czechoslovakia.

The "Made in Czechoslovakia" imprint is not a phony. Eastern Bell County is heavily populated with Czech-Texans. And it's been that way since before the turn of the century.

It's not the clothing that makes this east-county dance different from a Saturday night dance anywhere else.

There are no costumes. The dress is casual American (no blue jeans, however). And you don't have to be of Czech descent to attend. The dances are open to anyone who, wants to pay

the price of admission and be a part of a relaxed evening of fun.

What really makes the difference is the overall atmosphere. An intangible thing. It's things like hearing a mere trace of a foreign accent ... or watching little children playing around the edge of the dance floor while morn and dad waltz, still keeping one eye out for the youngsters.

Playing together as a family unit and working together are both typically Czech. There is a strong family bond. And yet it is not one of the light loosely disciplined "togetherness" affairs as practiced by the average American, according to the doctrine laid down by modern-day psychologists. In a word, Czech children are not the decision makers. Mom arid dad, who function as more than mere figureheads, are the first and final authority.

They demand respect.

As unusual as this "old-fashioned" concept of family life might seem to a psychologist, it still seems to work.

Drug abuse and crime are almost nonexistent among the Bell County Czech population.

Strong family units. Law-abiding citizens. Nature lovers. These three phrases describe what the Czechs are all about.

Even their music reflects it. From the simplest folk tunes on up to the famous compositions of Dvorak and Smetana, the songs re gelne around home, family, and sc e ne.: of nature.

The Czechs, just as all ethnic and racial groups have fallen victim to many Archy Bunker type images — catch-all descriptions which the public uses when talking about minority groups. Just as the man-on-the-street once believed that all black people had rhythin, so did the man-on-the-street have semething to say about the Czech.

"Those Bohunks," they would say, using a derisive team for Bohemian, "are all beer-drinking drunkards, slow learners, humorless, hard-headed, hotheaded, unfriendly farmers."

It's easy to de-bunk this false image by examining the descriptions one at a time.

Take humorless.

A Czech will understand your humor far better than you may understand his. His is droll, tongue-in-cheek, based on some situation which allows him to poke fun both at himself' and at you. And to keep you guessing as to whether he's serious or joking, he de-

The late Tom Sefcik — who was the original builder and owner of Sefcik Hall and who was all but a Bell County legend — was a masterful spinner of yarns which typified Czech humor.

"I just came from the eye doctor." he told a non-Czech friend one day, "and you know that little , bitty last line on the chart that has the letters ZBDEFKLOP?" "Yes," the friend answered. Could you read it?" he responded. "That was my mother's maiden name."

This was his way of making light of the combination of letters which go together to make up many Czech surnames. kalch names as Krcha, Zabcik, Motl, Klecka, and Jez are not uncommon.

Or take this Sefcik story: "We had a wet-dry election out here at Seaton one time," he told a listener, "And the vote was 99 wet to two dry.

We never did know whether the two dry votes were the new preacher and his wife who didn't realize yet that they n, are in wet coun fen, or whether it v as two peo ple neio had had one cie nik too mans- end couldn't see how o mark t7-,e, oailot."

Once again, the humor was selfrimed. Czechs do, indeed, like their beer just as Sefcik indicated. But they are rarely seen drunk. With a happy glow, yes. But senseless drunk, no. They don't drink with the average American attitude of getting drunk and escaping life. They're not escaping while they're drinking beer, they're just accenting' the positive part of living.

So much for the de-bunking of the humorless, beer drunkard image.

But what about the slow learners, hot-headed, hard-headed, unfriendly?

The truth of the matter is that if you want a quick decision, you'd better ask an impulsive Irishman . . . not a Czech, He answers the question, "What do you think?" with the words, "Let me think. He's not a slow learner or dullminded person; it's just that he sees no reason to make a hurried wrong decision when he might be able to make a better decision if given time.

Tells is probably the characteristic which is the most frustrating to the non-Czech, who is accustomed to getting the show on the road in a hurry.

One of these hurry-up men tells about riding to Houston with a Czech friend to attend a meeting. They were

already running late so he said. "Why don't you speed up. We are already 30 minutes late." The Czech answered deliberately, "Well I'd rather be 30 minutes late to Houston than 30 years early in heaven." And he didn't speed up a bit. He wasn't being hot-headed, hard-headed or unfriendly. He'd merely thought the situation through; decided he wanted to stay alive by sensible driving; and so he remained unhurried, unruffled and late.

There are things, however, which will ruffle the Czech rather quickly.

They don't like anyone flirting with their husband or wife. They won't pull a knife , on you or use bad language if you do. But the looks you get would cut through steel.

And they don't like oppression in any form. There has been far too much of it throughout their history — climaxed during World War II when Hitler slaughtered the men and imprisoned the women of Lidice and then plowed under the town. The post-war re-building 'of Lidice was the Czech's message to the world, "We will not be oppressed again."

Also, a Czech can be ruffled by the word "bohemian" if it is used as an adjective to describe a shiftless, hippietype non-conformist who is said to be living "the bohemian life." (Consult your dictionary for the definition of the bohemian with the little letter b).

That type of "bohemian life" in no way relates to the province of Bohemia, which is a part of Czechoslovakia.

There is really no way to explain how the expression originated unless it goes far back into history and refers to the colorful clothing which Czechs once wore or to the gypsies. And even the gypsies were never so much a part of Bohemia as they were a part of Austria-Hungary, from which Czechoslovakia was carved into a, nation after World War I. No matter where the expression "bohemian life" came from, the Czech resents it. It somehow casts a slur on his reliability, and he's far more insulted by being thought of as a hippie bohemian, with a little b, than he is by being thought of as a Bohemian, with a capital B. But even the capital B Bohemian, which some people use, is a misnomer.

Czechs were always Czechs even before the nation was formed. Some of them just happened to live in the province Of Bohemia — but there were

Wednesday, January 10, 1973 (and are) two other provinces as well— Slovakia and Moravia.

Most Czech-Texans trace their origin to Moravia. They were originally lured to the Lone Star State by glowing letters sent back home by an early immigrant. Rev. Arnost Bergmann — an Evangelical preacher who settled near Bellville at Cat Springs.

Since those who came to Texas were primarily farmers in the Old Country, they soon spread throughout the state looking for black farm land. Many discovered the rich farm belt in east Bell County in the late 1800's and settled here to make a vital contribution to the area.

The Czechs' contribution to Bell County has not been just financial, though the financial part should not be minimized.

According to a national economist, every dollar created by agriculture is more than quadrupled in benefits to the community.

So the money from Czech farms has 'flowed in and quadrupled. But more than that the Czech farmer himself has always given the county financial stability. Frugal by nature, he has never tended to over-buy or have too many installment payments or in any way contribute to a false economic condition which could lead to inflation.

Eastern Bell County farms are still skillfully tilled by Czech farmers, but not all Czechs are farmers. For many years they have been active in all types of businesses and professions in this section of the state.

In Temple, two buildings — one a 10-story downtown structure and the other a handsome, octagon-shaped building at the edge of the downtown business section — bear the name SPJST. These are the initials of a Czech, organized fraternal insurance society which has lodges all over Texas. Temple is state headquarters for the SPJST. And two of Bell County's chief entertainment centers, Star Hall and Flag Hall, are owned and operated by two lodges of the SPJST. Through the years, the Czech and all other cultures have thoroughly blended in Bell County until no group is set apart in society. And yet the Czech proudly retains a part of his national heritage This heritage is evident at such things as public programs featuring the colorful Czech Beseda dancers, and at bake sales where kolache sell like hot cakes, and on a,

VESTNfIK drive through eastern Bell County where lush farm acres surround neat farm cottages, and at stores in Zabcikville, Red Ranger, Ratibor, Cyclone and Seaton where genuine Czech 'sausage is for sale, and at the public dances.

Visitors are always welcome at the stores and dances in east Bell County, But don't go expecting everyone to gather around you to sing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow." You will be treated politely, cordially, but there is no such thing as instant friendship Just as he reserves judgment in all other things, so does the Czech reserve judgment about people. He gives his friendship slowly. But once given, he is committed. His friendship is guaranteed to last a lifetime.

P&W COMMISSION CHANGES TRANS-PECOS QUAIL SEASON Quail season in the Trans-Pecos has been set from Nov. 18, 1972 to Jan. 31, 1973, in a special public session of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission.

Bag and possession limits remain the same at 12 and 36, respectively. The season had been previously set Dec. 1 — Feb. 15 as it stands in most counties under the regulatory authority of the Commission.

A Parks and Wildlife Department staff recommendation stated that scaled quail populations in the TransPecos Regulatory District are at an alltime high and that many birds would not be available to hunters by the later opening date. As a result of the proposaff, the new date becomes effective immediately under the Uniform Wildlife Regulatory Act which provides emergency authority to prevent waste of wildlife resources.

Counties affected by the new season dates are Brewster, Culberson, El Paso, Hudspeth : Jeff Davis, Pecos, Reeves Presidio and Terrell.

13 COLD AND FLU SEASON IS HERE During this cold weather season, many of us will suffer the consequences of a cold , flu, or respiratory infection even though we may try to avoid or prevent it.

Since the chances are good to have a bout with the "cold bug" this year, it might behooa e each of us to know more about what a cad is and what to do with it when you have it, say state health officials.

What is a cold? The common cold is a name given to any of a number of ,short-lived infections of the nose and throat. All of them are highly contagious. They have similar symptoms.

Sometimes they are called by 'other names, which simply tell you what part of the upper respiratory tract is particularly affected: rhinitis, affecting the nose; pharyngitis, the throat; or laryngitis, the voice box.

What causes a cold? The Texas State Department of Health points out there are many different viruses which cause a cold. A virus is a disease-producing agent so small that it goes right through the very fine filter that stops bacteria. These cold-causing viruses are present in great numbers in your nose and throat when you have a cold.

'They are carried on the droplets you expel when talking, coughing, or sneezing.

Haw do you catch a cold? Though a virus causes your cold, a number of conditions seem to increase your susceptibility (science does not yet know why or how). People appear to catch colds mainly indoors. They get more of them during the colder months. Fatigue, chilling, and poor physical condition seem to give the virus a better foothold.

What's the course of a cold? From one to three days after the virus takes hold in your body, the symptoms appear. (But other people can catch your cold even before your symptoms appear — one reason why colds are hard to prevent). The first hint is usually scratchiness in the throat. Within a few hours, your nose gets stuffy and you have vague feelings of discomfort and illness. Usually, you start sneezing, too.

Within 48 hours, your cold is in full bloom — eyes teary, nose running, voice husky, breathing obstructed, and your senses of taste and smell dulled.

You may feel lethargic and achy. It is common to have a moderate headache,

esp.:, cially at the beginning (but -a severe one may be a sign of some complication). You may also have some fever, although that's unusual in adults.

Once the cold has• fully developed, it usually continues at its pnak for several days. Then there is a gradual letting up. An uncomplicated cold usually lasts for seven to fourteen days.

Can a cold be dangerous f? In itself, no. But it can open the door to other illnesses. And it is hard to know when the door has opened, because all the viruses that cause the common cold have not yet been identified. It is very difficult to say where the simple, unperilous cold leaves off and complications, which may be dangerous, begin.

Other non-cold viruses may complicate matters by getting in their licks when you are already felled by a cold.

Or bacteria — many of which live in your body harmlessly during times of good health — may grow strong when your defense' s are down. Or sometimes your body is allergic to the cold virus or the activated bacteria.

Then the severity of the cold symptoms increases, and the inflammation and mucous discharge may spread to other parts of your respiratory system.

For some pecple, these complications may be dangerous.

Can you cure a cold? No, you can't.

There is no drug known today that can cure the common cold. Antibiotics, the "wonder drugs," are effective against bacteria, not against ordinary respiratory viruses. Doctors may prescribe these drugs for the complications — the secondary, bacterial infections but not for the cold itself.

ST— TWO HOURS' WORK NETS STATE $1,573.00

Cool crisp weather is causing premature hunting fever in Atascosa County, and this is costing law enforcement officers of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department some sleepless nights.

It was during one of these nights around 1:30 a.m. that officer Arthur McCall of Pleasanton and his district supervisor, Chester Burdett of San Antonio, were patrolling six miles west of Camelton.

They both heard what sounded like a high-powered rifle discharging and upon investigation found three San Antonio men hunting from a public road. The three were charged with dis-

charging a firearm from a public road and fined $105.50 each.

After disposing of the case, McCall left Burdett and continued his patrol.

At 4 a.m. he heard another shot 15 miles southwest of Charlotte, Upon investigation he found two men in a pick up truck transporting three dead doe deer and three fawns.

The men, one from San Antonio and one from Poteet, were charged with hunting deer during the closed season and fined $628.50 each.

The two cases were made just 25 miles apart, and the state received, $1,573.50 in fines in less than two-and -one-half hours of the officer's time.

Department law enforcement officials in Austin say the Parks and Wildlife Department is placing new emphasis on enforcement of game laws.

INTERSTATE COOPERATION HELPS NAB VIOLATORS

Law enforcement officers from New Mexico and 'Texas game departments teamed up to bring two game law violators to justice.

Case started when New Mexico officials received a tin that two Austin men were in possession of elk meat taken on illegal licenses. The two had signed affidavits claiming to be residents of New Mexico so they could obtain resident hunting licenses there.

Nando Maulden of the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish flew to Austin and was assisted by Charlie Taloert, Grover Simpson and Marvin Patterson of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in finding the men.

The eik was being processed at a local locker plant.

Upon confrontation with the New Mexico official, the men agreed to return voluntarily to New Mexico to face chargq3 rather than tappealc before federal court in Austin to face charges of violating the Lacy Act which prohibits the inter-state transportation of illegally possessed game.

Two days before they were to appear in New Mexico however, one of the men called Maulden to say that he had changed his plans. He asked if he could settle the matter by ma il through his attorney.

But Maulden became suspicious when the man asked for a weather report for Northern New Mexico during the conversation.

A check revealed that the call had come from a phone quite a few miles

Wednesday, January 10, 1973 west of Austin. On a hunch, Maulden called the Jicarilla Apache Reservation the next day. Officials there told him the Austin men were camped there, planning. to hunt deer.

The men were picked up and spent the night in the Rio Cardin, County jail. The next day they were assessed criminal and civil penalties of $1,800.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, ONE OF NINE RISK FACTORS THAT CAUSE HEART ATTACKS

Thera are nine risk factors which physicians and medical 'scientists believe make man more susceptible to a heart attack far too early in life: high blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol, overweight, excessive eating, too little exercise, diabetes, cigarette smoking, tensions, and heredity.

Of these, hypertension, or high blood pressure, has -become- the major target for a nationwide campaign by the National Heart and Lung Institute, say officials of the Texas State Department of Health.

The reason for this major new campaign is simple. There are now an estimated 23,000,000 Americans who suffer from hypertension. That amounts to at least one in every 10 persons in this country. Health authorities say only half are aware of their disease, and of those, only about half are receiving treatment. And health officials say that of these, only half are receiving prop e r treatment, so there is a broad need for a program in this area.

High blood pressure is a serious condition. It can lead to strokes, heart failure, serious kidney problems, and often to early death. It can strike young and old, people of all races.

Someone very important to you may have it.

Even if you have high blood pressure, you may be unaware of it. Often there are no urgent symptoms to send you to your doctor. On the other hand, you may have severe, persistent headaches which is one of the symptoms most likely to cause a person to consult a physician.

Hypertension is easy to detect. A blood pressure check is inexpensive, quick, and painless.

Everyone needs blood pressure to move blood through the circulatory system. The blood pressure goes up and down within a limited range with each brat of the heart. But when the blood pressure goes up, and stays above the

There are several types of hypertension, varying from a sustained but usually modest elevation of blood pressure to blood pressure which is severely and persistently elevated. In general, the higher and more persistently elevated the pressure, the • more likelihood of damage to the blood vessels and the heart, brain and other organs.

During a physical examination, the doctor uses a blood pressure cuff and gauge (sphygmomanometer) to determine the force Of blood as it comes from the heart and hits the artery walls. The highest reading, known as "systolic" pressure, records the pressure exerted on the artery by each thrust of blood from the pumping action of the heart. The other, and lower reading, is the "diastolic" pressure remaining in the artery while the heart is relaxing.

When a person has high blood pi t, sure, the arterioles, or the peripheral arteries of very small size, clamp down to restrict the flow of blood. To overcome this resistance, the heart must pump harder to push blood through the circulatory system. With the increased work load, the heart muscle may grow larger and weaker from the demands put on it and begin to lose its ef ficiency.

A man whose blood pressure at systole (the moment the heart contracts) is over 150 has more than two times the risk of heart attack and nearly four times the risk of stroke of a man with systolic blood pressure under 120.

While the exact cause of primary or essential hypertension is unknown, certain factors contribute to it. The kidneys, for instance, may release a substance into the bloodstream which triggers a chain of chemical events leading to high blood pressure. Hypertension also may be caused by longstanding kidney disease, or certain abnormalities of the adrenal or other endocrine glands. Hypertension can usually be controlled. A person can lead a normal life, for treatment can usually bring his high blood pressure down.

State Health Department officials emphasize that hypertension is one of the commonest diseases affecting the population but that it is easily diagnosed and is amenable to thee apy. But, in its untreated state, it takes a major toll both in death and disabling disorden( through cardiac and renal damage and particularly through strokes.

SELECT PLANTS FOR lanNTER COLOR

Many native trees and shrubs lose their leaves in the wintertime and expose a multitude of colorful fruit.

Some of these can be added to the home landscape to provide winter color, suggests Dr. William Welch, landscape horticulturist for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

"Yaupon, parsley, hawthorn and deciduous holly are three of the most outstanding native plants we have for brightly colored fruit," points out Welch.

Deciduous yaupon, sometimes called possum-haw holly, grows abundantly over much of Texas. The plant boasts bright red to orange fruit. e;tice it is rarely available in nurseries, the plant ninet be collected in the wild. Select a plant with at least a few fruit since only the female plants will bear. Male pollen is usually close by to insure a crop of the berry-like fruit.

"Like many other members of the holly family, the deciduous yaupon tolerates a wide variety of soil, drainage and moisture conditions and can add variety and color to the landscape," notes the Texas A&M University specialist.

Yaupon, one of the most popular native evergreens, is also found over much of the state and is easily grown.

The shiny red-berry-like fruit is a traditional favorite for Christmas decorations in Texas as is the American holly that grows in the eastern third of the state. Yaupon and American holly can usually be. found in several sizes in nurseries.

Imported hollies, such as the Burforth and Chinese species, and pyracant'ea are planted for their fall color.

Like many plants not native to Texas, they have some insect and disease problems but most people consider them worth the extra care.

"One of the showiest of all fall fruiting plants in the landscape is the

persimmon," points out Welch. "Both native and Japanese types thrive in much of the state. The bright orange fruit hanging on bare limbs is quite a spectacle. And it's good to eat when fully ripe.

"By incorporating some of the attractive fall fruiting plants in the home landscape, there will be abundant winter color. In addition, the many birds and other wildlife that seek the plants for food and shelter will add beauty and interest to the landscape," adds the horticulturist. seJsTA "NURTURING FAMILY" Does it feel good to live in your family right now? Dr. Jennie Hitching, family life education specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University, described this kind of family.

"A nurturing family helps each person have feelings of self-worth and be a person in his own right. It shows a member he is loved and valued, and helps him have confidence in his abilities.

"It helps members develop feelings of competence and contentment, and become a mature, responsible person.

"Nurturing families do these things for one another in a combination of ways," Dr. Hitching continued.

"For example, family members look at one another — not just through one another or at the floor.

"A person from a nurturing family isn't afraid to take risks because everyone in the family realizes some mistakes go with risk-taking, and mistakes are one sign of growing.

"Affection — as well as pain and disapproval — can be shown openly.

"Also, each person is listened to — and cares about listening to others.

Each person knows he'll have the chance to be heard. If his turn doesn't come now, it's only because there isn't time — not that he isn't loved," Dr. Hitching emphasized.

When there is quiet in the home of a nurturing family, it is a peaceful quiet — not the stillness of fear or caution.

"When there is sound, it's the sound of meaningful activity — not the clatter of trying to drown out others."
