FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK The weekend of October 21-22 will be remembered by many Texans throughout the Central Texas area, especially in Hill and McLennan Counties when a tornado dipped down in this part of the state leaving a large amount of damage to much property. To those who remember the tornado some years ago in Waco, it certainly must bring back memories! Extensive dam.age was done to the Heart of Texas Coliseum and homes in that area of Waco. • On our return from the District VI meeting we were saddened to hear that a well-known couple, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Zapalac, of West, lost their only daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Steve Wallace, in an automobile accident during the early hours Sunday morning just south of Dallas. Kathy was a member of Lodge 6, Cottonwood and well-known to many of us in both counties (Steve was from Hillsboro). Durin,g her elementary age, Kathy was active in her lodge and even reigned as District III Duchess. She had a dynamic personality, achieving many titles during her 22 years of life, one of them being named "Miss West." Kathy will always be remembered with the feeling of everyone being something extra special to her in all walks of life. She will also be sadly missed by her third grade pupils at St, Louis

PEN FRIENDS It's rather wonderful, I think, When friends are made by pen and ink. A piece of paper, blue and white — Someone decides that she will write. To someone she has never seen, Who lives where she has never been. A pen becomes a magic wand; Two strangers begin to correspond. Not strangers long, but soon good friends; Just note how their last letter ends. How pleasant their exchange of views, Their comments on important news. Two friends who live quite far apart Can gladden much each other's heart; Can nourish too, each other's mind With goodly thoughts in letters kind. It's truly beautiful, I think, The friendship sprung from pen and ink. School in Waco, where she taught following her graduation from Baylor University. • Sunday, October 22, Lodge 135 Ennis, hosted the District III fall meeting in the beautiful and spacious Sokol building to a fair attendance. District President Johnnie Krizan presided. Al-

though it was a lengthy meeting, each district officer gave his or her report and it is only proper to commend them for a well organized meeting to make it of interest, especially to those in attendance. The youth of District III showed interest in their representation to organize their district youth club and 'elect their officers. There were 54 young people assembled who were eager to get started in their endeavors. They have elected a fine slate of officers who have served in office on the local lodge level. It is commendable of District Youth President Bobbi Moucka who handled the gavel when it was necessary. This already is an indication that she intends for the Dist. III Youth Club to take their duties seriously for the future and we wish them a very successful year. Let's all give them our full support because they need it. The poster contest was also an interesting item on the agenda. There were 17 posters which were displayed for impartial judges to jud ge the best three posters. DYD Wilma Nesuda, and her assistant, !Rosemarie Banik, had the youth program well organized in order to create into-rest among the youth. The host lodge youth entertained the members and guests with a nice program. DO' Alvin Nesuda gave recognition
