FROM ME EDITOR'S DESK We are living in a time of tremendous material progress. This has often been called the space age. It might also be referred to as the age of the gaps — the creditability gap, the generation gap, the missile gap, and the education gap. Others have called this the age of anxiety. Whatever its name, it is a protective age. Parents protect their children from the jolts which they themselves absorbed. Most of us realize that our government tries to protect its citizens against unemployment, sickness, profit or loss. There are those who would have us believe it is almost sinful to put in an honest day's work for our pay, and that the state owes everyone a guaranteed financial income. Our 'community schools, more and • more, protect their pupils from the reliable old corrective of trial and error. Too many of our youngsters are overloaded with scientific and technology studies, and not enough time is left for activities. In some communities, the youth of SPJST Society are grateful to have several interested leaders who take time out from their regular work or families and go to summer camp every year to teach the young folks many worthy projects. For instance, we had the opportunity to attend and witness a few hours at

IF If you. your lips would keep from slips, Five things observe With care; Of whom you speak, to whom you speak And how and when and where. If you, your ears would save from jeers, These things keep meekly hid; Myself and I, and mine and my, And how I do and did. Camp Val Verde (near McGregor) on Thursday evening, August 4th. Upon our arrival, SYD Dorothy Massey and District III YD Wilma Nesuda greeted the guests who also included: District III President Johnnie Krizan, Sister Ruth Krizan, Brother Aubrey Uptmor, and some folks from Dallas. We were advised that SL President Nick Morris and District III Director Sid Pokladnik visited camp on Tuesday, August 2nd. When everyone was seated to see the "Theater in the Round" in action on the tennis court, Sister Nesuda introduced the guests and then she turned the program over to Toastmaster Paul Pokiadnik (84). Later the program got underway with each camper given a part in a skit. Each group was composed of mixed ages, thus making the performance very comical. The en'tire cast was unrehearsed and everyone performed to the best of their ability. Group 12 thru 13 won first

place. There also was square dancing and "Hew-Haw" still remains popular among the campers. It was well presented; even the 6 thru 9 ages (small fry) knew their lines very well and all of this created a lot of laughter. Although the weather seemed unfavorable before the show, the campers didn't appear disturbed. They performed as if they were indoors before a large group of spectators. Afterward, everyone assembled in the main building for refreshments and visitation. Then it was time for departure. With our own observations, this was a worthy project sponsored by our Society, and a word of praise is due to all 14 chapclones and the camp staff. Whenever your editor sees something in real life: that needs to be clarified and stressed upon, he feels that he should reveal it to the membership. And, by that, we mean only the district membership knows who is best qualified for a district youth director's position. This was evident at camp, when Sister Nesuda took time off, without pay, to attend camp far almost a week and arrived with an overloaded camp track with working material, etc., while her substitute DYD, Rosemarie Banik, was on hand Sunday morning greeting campers and chaperones upon their arrival and stayed as long as her time permitted
