FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, July 23rd — Lodge No. 107, Floresville hosted another successful YAD in District VII, to a nice crowd assembled to witness many happy winners.

The festivities started with a delicious meal and refreshments. DYD Maxine Pavliska had many adults assigned to a certain job and everything seemed in order. Even the judges were kept occupied all afternoon with 125 entries from three youth clubs. The arts and crafts department was again carefully displayed with some fine demonstration in each category.

and we wish to thank the host lodge for their warm, hospitality.

Although District VII has only three active youth clubs, they certainly are a group of energetic and enthusiastic youngsters. Each club had something to be proud of. For instance, Lodge 56 won Youth Leader of the Year; Lodge 107, Florcsville will always remain with Fond, memories (if Miss SPJST — Joan (Pavliska) Stephens; and Lodge 117, Robstown captured Youth Club of the Year. Besides achieving these titles, there were many awards presented to the art, craft and merit point system winners by SL President Nick Morris and SYD Dorothy Massey. District VI YD Elsie Brdecka was given an opportunity to be the timekeeper. We were glad to see her make a visit to District VII. This concluded another line YAD,

In everyone's routine work there is a deadline that must be adhered to, and the deadline we have reference to in this column is August 15th, 1972, when the insurance contest will conclude.

Some lucky organizer from each district (we hope) will be fortunate to win an expense paid trip to the Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC), which will be held in October in San Antonio.

After reviewing the many years of insurance sales' reports from SL Vice President Joe B. Hejny's office we see that in the past our Society tried out the most practical method of keeping interest and enthusiasm of the members in high gear so that our membership drives would bring good results.

The organizational work was conducted much easier than today because at

that time we were selling more or less, just memberships in the SPJST and not paying attention to the insurance needs of the prospects and their families. Since that time conditions have changed a great deal and we are con'winced it was for the good of the Society. After adopting the most modern plans of insurance, the organizers were able, from year to year, to sell much more insurance and secure many more new members into the SPJST. During the present campaign there is no reason why we couldn't equal or better all previous records. With a little more understanding and cooperation of our members for mutual competition in the membership drive, we are certain that we could achieve much greater results.

The reason we share this very opti,mistic view is very simple. Our Society, at present, is very strong financially, dependable, and issues the most modern life policies Obtaina.ble. This was made possible some years back and we certainly should take full advantage of all the possibilities that are offered to us in the present organizational work.

After a successful convention we hope that all of our members will take special interest in the new membership drive in the 75th year of our existence. It is up to all of us to show the best possible results with only a

• Thankfulness is a wonderfully warm and profoundly decent thing. To feel it, and express it, is a blessing of the highest order. For to be grateful is to be happy, Thankfulness is a reflection from the mind that realizes man's insignificance. Such a mind, holding itself receptive to the infinite, receives guidance and protection and provision. Men whose lives are lighted by such illimitable trust place themselves beyond the pettiness in which human misery is bred. They are happy men. For this benison they give thanks.

Thus does chain reaction fill man's life with goodness and contentment.

A grateful heart will initiate it. Rather 'than wait for some especially bountiful gift from Providence, let us be thankful for what we already have, remembering that much good may come from heartfelt thanksgiving for simple, little things.

"Admiral" John Galser , a veteran of six years Navy service, got seasick while his brother, Ernest, a landlubber of 21 years Army service, was official bartender and took care of him Mrs. Ernest and Mrs. Bill (Gaiser) caught the most fish while, Ernest caught a cold.

Mrs. Olga Lindemann, 84, of the Industry community, passed away Monday, July 31, in the Retama Manor Nursing Home in La Grange. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday from the Industry Methodist Church, with graveside and burial services in Woodlawn Cemetery in Houston. Mrs. Lindemann was the mother of Mrs. Ernest (Pearl) Hanka and Mrs. John (Talita) Hilsher, both of Houston.

UP FROM THE DEPTHS Emilie couldn't read — until doctors discovered she had a strange problem called dyslexia; she conquered it and became a state reading ,champion.

By Nil Whlittingttot Nine years ago Emilie Cavanaugh, 19, a honey-haired, brown-eyed beauty from Granger was such a poor reader she was ridiculed by teachers and classmates alike. Today, she is, state champion in prose interpretation, selected by the prestigious Tams Junior College Speech and Theatre Association.

How does a young woman turn humiliation and defeat into soul-satisfying success? With a little help and, lots of work, a little luck and lots of love. .Emilie's ordeal stemmed from a

3 learning problem many psychologists term dyslexia. According to Taber's Cycicipedic Medical Dictionary, dyslexia is "visual confusion by which similarly shaped letters are transposed, causing the victim to see a word such as 'pot for 'top'. It is estimated that eight to 25 percent of all children have such problems, with boys affected four times as often as girls.

Emilie's problem surfaced when she enrolled in St. Cyril and Methodius school in Granger a few days before her sixth birthday.

Right away," she ,F_.a y s, "I realized I couldn't read as well as the others.

Her mother, Norma, says, `1: definitely felt something was wrong. We'd read a simple little hook four or five times and the next clay it was like she'd never seen it at all."

Nuns at St. Cyril tried to reassure the family that she would eventually catch up. In the meantime, however, Emilie was suffering humiliations that had begun to damage her usually sunny nature.

The greatest of these, and the catalyst for her recovery, came in the fifth grade. Second grader's were called in to work math problems Emilie had been unable to do. She rushed home sobbing. "Mother, they laughed at me!"

"I felt like I was retarded," Emilie, laughs. "Teachers would say things to try to make you study. Little did they know I was studying my head off at home."

The family noticed a change in Emilie's personality. She began to have temper tantrums, locking herself in her room, screaming. was so frustrated," Emilie says.

"No matter what I did it wasn't right."

Her parents knew something must be done, so they talked With Emilie's pediatrician. Dr. Chit Price, Austin.

DT. Price recommended psychological testing and arranged for her to be seen by Dr. Ira Iscoe, a University of Texas psychologiA. Emilie remembers her visit to Dr. Iscoe.

PATSY KALIN1 ELECTED STATE 4-H OFFICER Patsy Kalina of Wharton has been elected girl vice-chairman of the State 4-H Council to serve the 100,000 member Texas 4-H organization for 197273.

New council officers were at the University of Houston. These officers will help in much of the planning and coordination of 4-H activities across the state.

Miss Kalina is the 18-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Kalina, Jr., of Route 3, Wharton. A 1972 gradBernard High School. She uate of is a freshman physical education major at Wharton County Junior College.

As an East Bernard Teenage 4-H Club members, she was a Gold Star girl in 1972 and was the District 11 4-H Council chairman last year. In 1971 she was the high point girl at the county fair and was chosen as a 4-H exchangee to Oklahoma. The new girl vice-chairman also helped represent 4-H at the Astrodome in Houston this year. At the local level, she has been club president and county chairman.

There will be fun for all, with chicken barbecue dinner, with all the trimmings and goodies, various games, bazaar and other booths, rides and swimming. All this will be topped by a blast of a battle dance flout 2 to 9 p.m. The Vrazels and Jimmie Brosch bands can do 'em all so there should be a variety of music for everyone. Saturday , August 19, Gil Kautz of Temple and his rhythm orchestra will be here for a big semi-formal dance; they do bring 'em out. Then on Saturday, August 26, you can enjoy swinging to the Knights of Dixie band from Schulenburg, and the last big event of August will be the Homecoming Day on Sunday, the 27th. Beef barbecue dinner served free to bonafide members, bring your ID card; amusenin l o, cial evening from 2 to 4 p.m. and a big free dance to the Clarence Baca band. Almost forgot to comment on the Jurecka, dance. They played. like a bunch of son-of-a-guns and at times had everyone on the floor. Really was a nice friendly dance.

Before I end I wish to give recognition to one of our wonderful members; although he has only been a member for about a year, he certainly has contributed a lot to our intertainment and culture. The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Willie Trcalek. The pledge of allegiance was repeated by all members present.

The minutes were read with, no adIditions or corrections. One new member was voted into the lodge.

No old or new business was brought up, However, delegates attending the convention from our lodge discussed what had taken place in Houston.

Mr. Zabcik had major surgery recently and is at home doing fine.

Fraternally, Doris Svoboda, Reporter LODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH Dear Brothers and Sistere, The, summer heat continues, but no rain in sight.

We just returned from a cae week trip where we attended the rehearsal dinner and the wedding of our niece, Mary Catherine Ban, and Darrell Har1:18011 who were married Friday, July 28th in the Holy Family Church. The wedding was followed by a dinner and a dance at the aolping House for Over 200 people. It was enjoyed by everyone.

It was wonderful reminiscing with attendants of our wedding in St. Louis in 1935. We extend our sincere congratulations to the young couple and may you have a long and happy life together.

We also stopped in Oklahoma City for a night and were busy trying to say hello and good-bye to our former neighbors and friends.

The Friendship clulb met yesterday and had a real nice turnout. The heat didn't keep any away. A nice lunch was served after we sang "Happy Birthday to Sister Zich who will be 90 years young on August 13th. We also said a prayer for Brother Frank Pro chaska's speedy recovery. I understand he may get to go home soon.

Four carloads of youth left Sunday for Camp Val Verde. Brother and Sister Steinman drove down Monday in case any of them were home-sick, but they were all having too much fun, so they returned home alone.

Donna Rose Parker is now home from the hospital and hopes, in anothe er few weeks, to be herself again. Mary Jean Stoeppelman had her cast removed last Friday. She isn't able to run yet, but they say it will take time to get back to normal.

After the game, the team had a wiener roast party with drinks, dessert and all the trimmings. All the players, their wives and children, a lot of our sponsors, lodge officers and entertainment committee members attended. We had to plan the party on a very short notice, but the response and attendance was gratifying. We held the party at the home of Lionel and Ida Schulz. We wish to express our thanks and appreciation for the use of their spacious backyard and their swimming pool, which was enjoyed by the youngSters present. Our thanks also to the wives who brought sweets and dessert, and to anyone else who brought things for the party.

LODGE NO, 84, DALLAS SPJS',17 SOFTBALL TEAM Dear Brothers and Sisters: We remained in the DSM Championship Playoffs by a 2 to 0 win over Texas Bank on Friday night, July 28. Thus, We gained revenge over the team that beat us in the first round of play. Jim Scoggins was the winning pitcher, allowing 3 hits, 1 walk and whiffing 8 batters. It was an outstanding perIormance by Jim and he received good support afield. Leading hitters were Connie Brennan, Bill Skrabanek„ Jack S;cott, Pete. Thomas and Harry Wilkerson with singles and Jim Scoggins with a sacrifice hit. Despite the fact that the Cowboys were playing the College All-Stars and the game was televised, we still had about 20 people at the game rooting for us and, boy, this is true loyalty and we deeply appreciate such wonderful support.

We played our next game on Moi day night, July 31, and we won again by a score of 11 to 0, over the Republic Life Ins. team. Bob Womack, a pitcher from the John E. Mitchell team who we drafted for the playoffs, pitched a very good game allowing 2 hits, 1 walk, and struck out 7 batters. Leading hitters were Lawrence Monza with a home run and a double, Sonny Grant with a home run and a single, Jack Scott with 2 singls and a sacrifice, Grover Moore with 2 singles, Wiley Beesley with a double and a walk, Ron Nelson and Connie Brennan with singles and a walk apiece and Harry Wilkerson. and 'Bob Womack with singles. The team, as a whole, played a very good game. afield as well as at bat. We had a, very good turnout of friends and members at the game, ova' 40 people and their cheers were most welcome!

Oh yes! Sister Rose Scott had the main attraction for the night, she had tali the players draw numbers, then she presented gifts to all the players. The gifts were of a fun-nature as well as some real nice gifts mixed in. It was a lot of fun and we do sincerely appreciate her doing this and furnishing all the gifts on her own, and all of us want to say: "THANK YOU, Sister Rose!"

Wednesday night, August 2, we continued our winning ways because we beat the Post Office team by a score of 5. G. Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher and he hurled, another outstanding game allowing' only one hit, no walks, and struck out 17 batters. Barry Wilkerson ; his battery mate, continued his outstanding ' play behind home plate. Leading hit tcrs were Wiley Beesley with a triple and a base-onballs, Harry Wilkerson with a triple, and the bases were loaded, Jack Scott with a double, Bill Skrabanek with a double and Lawrence Monza with 2 walks.

By virtue of the win, there are only 4 teams left in the Dallas City Playoffs, and our next game was to be played Friday, August 4. If we win the first game we will play another game, Immediately following the first. Should 'we also win the second 'game, we will play Saturday, August a, for the championship. If we can continue our fine play we will have had a most successful season. Final results will be given in my next report.

We had another wonderful turnout at the games and we sincerely appreciate the cheers and encouragement ;given to the team. To name everyone would be space consuming, however, may we just name our own Lodge 84 President Adolph Salac and his wife

TO DISTRICT I YOUTH CAMPERS: Dear Members, Most of the youth campers know what to bring to camp, but for those who don't know, bring enough clothes for one change each day, one pair of long pants, shoes, socks (for horseback riding), swim suit, 2 sheets, pillow and pillow case, towels, wash cloths, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and any other personal items you may want to bring.

You may want to bring some money for drinks as they will be available at certain times during the day.

Schedules will be handed out when you register at camp so it really isn't necessary to publish them.

Also, we will have enough free time so that if you wish to bring records you may do so, but be sure to put your name on them. The only record I am bringing is "Cotton-Eyed Joe" by Al Dean.

I have made most of the chaperone and leader name tags, but be sure your youth club, has made theirs for the youth.

DISTRICT VII YAD AT LODGE 107, July 23 was a rewarding day for the youth of District VII. Registration was underway by 10:30, with 125 entries from Lodges 56-79 Corpus Christi, 117 Robstown, and 107 Floresville.

A delicious barbecued chicken dinner with all the trimmings was served at noon.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Readers, We still have many of our youth club members on vacation, but we sure had a good turn-out for our trip to Hermann Park. It was such a nice day, the zoo was very interesting and we had no rain or ants at our picnic. I Would like to thank Virginia Wright, Helen Ilegwood and Mrs. Mary Fusig, Mrs. Zissa, my husband, Frank Knapick, and a few teenagers who helped with the little ones. The- teens were Robert Knapick, Jody Elzner, Vicky Heigwood and Becky Wright. We had 29

junior youth club members.

The teens went to see "South Pacific" at the Miller Theatre. I won't say how long Mrs. Virginia Wright and I waited in line to get the tickets but every minute was worth it because it was really a good play.

August 13 we will have a Little Las Vegas Day at Lodge 88; there will be snowcones, popcorn, games and rides for the youth. On August 18 and 19 the junior and teen youth clubs will have a garage. and hake sale. I hope everyone is looking real hard for donations for this sale. It can be anything you can't use but something someone else might use. Your donations can be

brought to the youth room or let me or one of my assistants know and we will see that it is picked up.

We are all looking forward to our trip to Temple for State YAD, August 20. I hope we have lots of first-place winners at the state level. We can't all be first place winners, but all of you did a good job trying at local and district leivels. The special social for all Lodge 88 YAD participants will be a trip to Astroworld.

Douglas Uptanor baked the cake and it was real pretty. The club sold food at the Cottonwood School Reunion. They did pretty good. I want to thank all of you who donated sandwiches, cakes, kolaches and other items and also all those who worked in the kitchen.

Also, TicH:lay, we ),vent to Nasa which was intelesting and fun. Then we had. hambingers and cokes at Lodge 88, which were geoid. Wednesday, we went swimming at Lodge 88 until 3 p.m. and it was a lot of fun. Later we had refreshments.

The door prizes were won by Becky Havran, Billy Ha[vran, William Janik and Ann Pavlicek. Everyone paid their dues. After the meeting we had homemade ice cream, and it was good.

We had a guest speaker from Czechoslovakia by way of South Africa. He gave us a very nice speech and we asked him some questions, with very good answers.

During District VII YAD, we had two winners. They are George Peal and Kelly Hermis. Also, we are proud that our Youth Leader Martha Elmer won Youth Leader of the Year, and our youth club won second place in Youth Club of the Year.

We really enjoyed YAD, and thanks to all members of Ledge 107, Floresville for their hospitality.

I enjoyed working this past year because I enjoy the youth club, and activities. I missed the last swimming party because I was sick with a cold. I will be glad when we have another party.

Jamie, and Robin were in the royalty contest. Jeffrey and Nickie won 1st place in individual talent, Jeffrey also won 1st place in Science and Educational, and on a poster. Jeff'rey won the $2 door prize.

The meeting adjourned at 8:17. After the meeting, we had ice cream and a watermelon party.

RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY Brother Frank Machacek of 206 Willis St. in Granger, passed away Sunday morning, July 23rd, 1972, at the age of 74, in the Johns Community Hospital in Taylor. He was born March 6th, 1898 in Czechoslovakia and came to the United States in 1909. He retired four years ,ago as a county employee. He was a member of Lodge Komensky No. 20, Granger.

vtIsTmtK On October 18th, 1922, he was Married to Miss Mary Nemec, who survives.

Also surviving are five daughters. Mrs. William Gilchrist of Gadsen, Alabama; Mrs. Edith Davidson of Taylor; Mrs. Jimmy Williams of Granger, and Mrs. Bill Davis and Mrs. Earl Sondolier of Hourm, Louisiana; twos sons, Bill Machacek of Houston and Frankie Machacek of Georgetown; a brother, John Maehacek of Granger; 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday in the Condra. Funeral Chapel in Granger, followed by 10 a.m. services in SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with the Rev. William A. Sutton officiating. Interment was in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

RESOLVED by the members of Lodge Komensky No. 20, herein represented by the undersigned Special Committee, that condolence and deep sympathy be extended to the bereaved family of our departed brother.
